Abstract

Abstract Melon production in the Brazilian semi-arid region is subject to the use of marginal waters with high salinity. However, the use of regulators and bioactivators in seed treatment can mitigate the harmful effects of salts in irrigation water. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments with plant regulators and bioactivator in melon seeds for the production of seedlings irrigated with biosaline water from fish farming effluent. For this, two trials with the Goldex and Grand Prix hybrids were carried out separately. A completely randomized design was used in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (pre-germination treatments × water dilutions). In addition to the control, the seeds were treated with salicylic and gibberellic acids and thiamethoxam. The waters used for irrigation were local-supply water, fish farming effluent (biosaline water) and these diluted to 50%. Physiological and biochemical analyses were performed for fourteen days. Biosaline water (5.0 dS m-1) did not affect the emergence of Goldex melon seedlings, but compromised the establishment of the Grand Prix cultivar. Seed pre-treatments with salicylic and gibberellic acids attenuate the effects of water salinity and promote growth modulations, resulting in more vigorous melon seedlings.

Abstract

Background Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) and medical abortion (MA) can be used to treat women with abortion complications and the choice of the evacuation method is essential for the safe management of abortion. Objective to evaluate the frequency of use of MVA and MA and investigate the associated factors after the installation of a surveillance network of good practices (MUSA Network) in a university hospital in Brazil. Methods A cross-sectional study of women admitted for abortion at UNICAMP Women’s Hospital, Brazil, between July 2017 and November 2020. The dependent variables were the rates of MVA and MA. The independent variables were clinical and sociodemographic data. The Cochran-Armitage test, chi-square test, Mann–Whitney test and multiple logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. Results 474 women were included. Most women (91.35%) had undergone uterine evacuation: uterine curettage (78.75%), MVA (9.46%) and MA (11.54%). Abstract

Seeds should be stored properly in order to minimize the deterioration process. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the germination of Amburana cearensis seeds after storage in different packaging and environments. Seeds were stored in two packages (plastic and paper bags) under three different conditions: laboratory (30±5°C/66% RU); germination chamber (20±2°C/86% RU) and cold chamber (±10±2°C/77% RU) during 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Seeds water content and germination were evaluated before and after the storage period. Seeds stored in germination chamber had higher values of water content either in plastic or paper bags. Physiological quality of A. cearensis seed was affected by the storage environment only when packed in paper bags, which showed 50% decreased germination as of 9 months in cold chamber.
