1. Simulations of tungsten fuzz growth and erosion under He/Ar mixed plasma irradiation on LP-MIES

Abstract

Extrinsic noble impurities seeding has been commonly used to reduce the heat flux on divertor target. However, the physical sputtering yield on the target could be obviously enhanced due to larger mass of noble impurities. On the other hand, it has been reported that tungsten fuzz can suppress the physical sputtering due to the trapping effect on sputtered particles. Hence, it is interesting to check the erosion behaviors of tungsten fuzz under the irradiation of noble impurities. Recently, experiments of He/Ar mixed plasma irradiation on W target were conducted on LP-MIES device. Dedicated simulations have been performed by SURO-FUZZ code to study the impact of Ar flux on fuzz growth and erosion, which can well reproduce the experimental measurements on LP-MIES. For the case of pure He incidence, the growth of porous nanostructure leads to an obvious reduction in the fraction of the implanted He particles, which stabilizes to 15 % when the fuzz layer thickness exceeds 1500 nm. For He/Ar mixed plasma irradiation, the dependence of the position of the net sputtering on the local porosity has been investigated in detail. It is found that the net physical sputtering mainly occurs in the regions with the local porosity larger than 0.6.

Abstract

The hydraulic turbine has been used extensively in the field of energy conservation. For turbines that have low heads and large discharge, improving recovery efficiency and stability is crucial due to their significant hydraulic impact. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the correlation between the influence of radial guide vanes on the stability of low-head, large-discharge turbines focusing on hydraulic performance and energy dissipation before and after the implementation of guide vanes. Moreover, in this paper, two types of turbines, with and without guide vanes, were designed considering the desulfurization scenario. Hydraulic efficiency, radial force, and internal flow field mechanics were numerically studied, and validated through experiments. The results reveal that the working range of the hydraulic turbine could be widened and the energy recovery efficiency improved by a maximum of 3.11% in the small flow rate under the action of guide vanes. Furthermore, it results in a substantial reduction in the radial force of the impeller. Subsequently, the variation in entropy production of different components under full flow rate conditions was compared between the models with and without guide vanes. The total energy consumption decreases sharply under overall working conditions due to the flow control ability of guide vanes affecting the flow state. The entropy production rate of the impeller remains the largest regardless of the presence of a guide vane in the turbine. The vortices inside the guide vanes increase obviously with the flow rate increase.

Abstract

A compact online proton spectrometer based on a CMOS plate detector was proposed for the diagnosis of picosecond intense-laser accelerated protons. Inside the CMOS plate detector, a composite structure that composed of a scintillator screen, a fiber optic plate (FOP), and a CMOS sensor was designed to detect the protons safely and efficiently. The scintillator screen converted the incident protons to visible light, which, in turn, was collected by using the FOP and detected by using the CMOS sensor. An additional aluminum housing was designed to decrease the strong electromagnetic pulse (EMP) impact on the electronic readout system from picosecond laser–plasma interaction. This online spectrometer is compact and cost-effective than the system based on the micro-channel plate or scintillator screen in combination with an electron multiplying CCD camera and has better resistance to radiation damage than the system based on a single CMOS sensor.

Abstract

In deep learning based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) change detection, selecting samples of high quality is a crucial step. In this work, we have proposed a refined sample selection algorithm for unsupervised SAR change detection. The propose and incorporation of volume control factors and multi-hierarchical fuzzy c-means (MH-FCM) algorithm generate samples of large diversity and high confidence, thus satisfying the needs for high quality samples. The method includes two phases: firstly, an enhanced difference image is constructed according to the difference consistency between single pixels and their neighbourhoods, and a triangular threshold segmentation method is then proposed to determine the volume control factors for sample selection. MH-FCM is developed to classify the log mean ratio difference image into 4 classes. Secondly, a dual-channel convolution neural network with an adaptive weighted loss is adopted to learn and predict the input and to obtain the change detection result. Experimental results of the Gaofen-3 dataset in Beijing have validated the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed method.

Abstract

With the increasing complexity of the electromagnetic environment and the continuous development of radar technology, more and more modern digital programmable radars using agile waveform will appear in the future battlefield. It is difficult to effectively identify these radar emitters with complex system only by relying on traditional recognition models. In response to the above problem, this paper proposes a recognition method of radar emitters with agile waveform based on hybrid deep neural network and attention mechanism to deal with the problem of variable conventional characteristic parameters of radar emitter signals with agile waveform. First, we perform a distributed representation of the pulse signal data to generate high-dimensional sparse signal features. Then we design to use a dynamic Convolutional Neural Network to extract features of structural details of radar emitter signals with agile waveform at different levels, and use a Long Short-Term Memory to extract its timing features. In order to obtain the deep features that can characterize the agility of the waveform, the attention mechanism-based method is used to fuse the extracted structural features and timing features, and at the same time it can reduce the influence of noise in complex electromagnetic environment on the characteristic data of radar emitter. Finally, the deep feature is input into the Softmax layer to complete the recognition of radar emitters with agile waveform. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper can effectively solve the problem of the recognition of radar emitters with agile waveform, and the recognition accuracy is improved by 1.26% compared with the traditional models and other deep models.

6. Technical note: Evaporating water is different from bulk soil water in δ2H and δ18O and has implications for evaporation calculation

Abstract

Soil evaporation is a key process in the water cycle and can be conveniently quantified using δ2H and δ18O in bulk surface soil water (BW). However, recent research shows that soil water in larger pores evaporates first and differs from water in smaller pores in δ2H and δ18O, which disqualifies the quantification of evaporation from BW δ2H and δ18O. We hypothesized that BW had different isotopic compositions from evaporating water (EW). Therefore, our objectives were to test this hypothesis first and then evaluate whether the isotopic difference alters the calculated evaporative water loss. We measured the isotopic composition of soil water during two continuous evaporation periods in a summer maize field. Period I had a duration of 32 d, following a natural precipitation event, and period II lasted 24 d, following an irrigation event with a 2H-enriched water. BW was obtained by cryogenically extracting water from samples of 0–5 cm soil taken every 3 d; EW was derived from condensation water collected every 2 d on a plastic film placed on the soil surface. The results showed that when event water was heavier than pre-event BW, δ2H of BW in period II decreased, with an increase in evaporation time, indicating heavy water evaporation. When event water was lighter than the pre-event BW, δ2H and δ18O of BW in period I and δ18O of BW in period II increased with increasing evaporation time, suggesting light water evaporation. Moreover, relative to BW, EW had significantly smaller δ2H and δ18O in period I and significantly smaller δ18O in period II (p). These observations suggest that the evaporating water was close to the event water, both of which differed from the bulk soil water. Furthermore, the event water might be in larger pores from which evaporation takes precedence. The soil evaporative water losses derived from EW isotopes were compared with those from BW. With a small isotopic difference between EW and BW, the evaporative water losses in the soil did not differ significantly (p>0.05). Our results have important implications for quantifying evaporation processes using water stable isotopes. Future studies are needed to investigate how soil water isotopes partition differently between pores in soils with different pore size distributions and how this might affect soil evaporation estimation.

Abstract

The irradiation of a target with high laser intensity can lead to self-generation of an intense magnetic field (B-field) on the target surface. It has therefore been suggested that the sheath-driven acceleration of high-energy protons would be significantly hampered by the magnetization effect of this self-generated B-field at high enough laser intensities. In this paper, particle-in-cell simulations are used to study this magnetization effect on sheath-driven proton acceleration. It is shown that the inhibitory effect of the B-field on ion acceleration is not as significant as previously thought. Moreover, it is shown that the magnetization effect plays a relatively limited role in high-energy proton acceleration, even at high laser intensities when the mutual coupling and competition between self-generated electric (E-) and B-fields are considered in a realistic sheath acceleration scenario. A theoretical model including the v × B force is presented and confirms that the rate of reduction in proton energy depends on the strength ratio between B- and E-fields rather than on the strength of the B-field alone, and that only a small percentage of the proton energy is affected by the self-generated B-field. Finally, it is shown that the degraded scaling of proton energy at high laser intensities can be explained by the decrease in acceleration time caused by the increased sheath fields at high laser intensities rather than by the magnetic inhibitory effect, because of the longer growth time scale of the latter. This understanding of the magnetization effect may pave the way to the generation of high-energy protons by sheath-driven acceleration at high laser intensities.

8. Physiological and molecular responses of two Chinese cabbage genotypes to heat stress

Abstract

A comparative investigation of heat stress-mediated physiological and biochemical parameters in conjunction with the expression analysis of heat shock transcription factors (BrHSF) from two different Chinese cabbage genotypes was done to understand the mechanism of heat tolerance. Our results show that the heat-tolerant (2013-33) genotype had a smaller relative electric conductivity, a less malondialdehyde content and a higher maximal efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry than the heat-sensitive (AM160) genotype, and was able to develop the leaf head under heat stress, whereas 'AM160' flailed to develop it. The results also indicate that '2013-33' accumulated a higher amount of soluble sugars and protein under heat stress condition than 'AM160'. However, it warrants to mention that proline content and antioxidant enzymes, such as the peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activities, in the 2013-33 genotype under HS were recorded, being significantly lower than in 'AM160'. Additionally, the expression profile of BrHSF genes was checked and classified to three main groups, (i) HS-induced HSFs expressed in both genotypes ( group I), (ii) suppressed by HS in both genotypes (groupII), and (iii) genotype-specific expression of HSFs (repressed in the AM160 heat-sensitive genotype whereas induced in the '2013-33' heat tolerance genotype; group III). Furthermore, the result of promoter analysis shows that group III BrHSFs, i.e., 23, 30, and 33 gene promoter regions possessed a difference between '2013-33' and 'AM160'. In conclusion, the results of our study identify that '2013-33' had more heat tolerance than 'AM160' because of a higher accumulation of sugar and protein and an enhanced expression of group III HSFs, and the differential response of group III HSFs to HS in these two genotypes may be because of a promoter sequence difference. The study provides us a clue towards understanding the mechanism of heat tolerance in Chinese cabbage and offers a valuable source for further improvement of heat tolerance in Chinese cabbage.

Abstract

The influences of impurity flux on erosion and deposition of carbon/tungsten rough surfaces have been investigated with the rough surface code SURO. The temporal evolution of the eroded substrate and deposited impurity areal densities has been studied with different carbon fluxes. For the low impurity flux, the carbon and tungsten substrates maintain to be eroded during the exposure. The tungsten eroded areal density is about 1010 μm−2, which is two orders of magnitude lower than the carbon substrate. In contrast, for the high impurity flux, both the tungsten and carbon substrates can be protected by the strongly deposited impurity from erosion. The increased impurity flux leads to the transition from erosion to deposition dominated regime for both rough tungsten and carbon surfaces.

Abstract

Detecting the land cover changes is an important application of multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. This study puts forward a novel SAR change detection method which has two-steps: change detector construction and change threshold selection. For change detector construction, considering the SAR intensity images follow the gamma distribution, the conditional probabilities of the binary hypothesis test are provided, then the log likelihood ratio (LLR) combined with the log ratio (LR) to construct a detector which can enhance the degree of change to calculate the diversity degree convenient between the two images; for change threshold selection, owing to the characteristic that the curve about the ratio value of adjacent grey-level (GL) values in normalized difference map, the normalized difference map can be segmented in three parts by two thresholds selected which correspond to the regions of unchanged, backscatter enhanced and weakened separately. And as this, the change areas can be also determined simultaneously. The experimental results on different areas and sensors indicate that the proposed algorithm is effective and feasible.

11. Management reference for nature reserve networks based on MaxEnt modeling and gap analysis: a case study of the brown–eared pheasant in China

Referencia para la gestión de las redes de reservas naturales basada en la creación de modelos MaxEnt y el análisis de deficiencias: un estudio del faisán orejudo pardo en China La planificación de reservas naturales y la creación de redes son importantes para la conservación de los hábitats y la fauna silvestre. Los análisis de las deficiencias son instrumentos eficientes y fiables para establecer un orden de prioridad entre las iniciativas de conservación de hábitats, en especial por lo que respecta a las especies en peligro de extinción. Proponemos un plan de conservación para el faisán orejudo pardo, Crossoptilon mantchuricum, mediante la determinación de las zonas con una protección insuficiente en las 14 reservas naturales existentes. En total, se seleccionaron 45 localidades y 11 variables ambientales en función de las características del uso del hábitat del faisán orejudo pardo, y se utilizó un modelo de máxima entropía (MaxEnt) para obtener la distribución de la especie. Los resultados del modelo MaxEnt mostraron una elevada precisión de predicción. Los resultados del análisis de las deficiencias revelaron que en las montañas Luliang, en Shanxi, y las montañasXiaowutai, en Hebei, la protección era insuficiente. Encontramos 458 km2 de hábitat óptimo y 1.390 km2 de hábitat moderadamente adecuado dentro de los límites de la reserva natural nacional. No obstante, casi 1.861 km2 del hábitat óptimo y 17.035 km2 del hábitat moderadamente adecuado no estaban protegidos, lo que equivale al 9,0% y el 82,1%, respectivamente, del hábitat adecuado total. La mayor parte de la superficie sin protección estaba formada por hábitat moderadamente adecuado para el faisán orejudo pardo y debería considerarse prioritaria en las iniciativas futuras de conservación. Hay nueve reservas naturales a lo largo de un eje norte–sur en las montañas Luliang que forma un pasillo ecológico. Para mantener la integridad, originalidad y continuidad de estos hábitats y, por tanto, proteger el faisán orejudo pardo, deberían reforzarse los departamentos locales de conservación con miras a mejorar la gestión de la reserva natural a escala provincial y poner en práctica eficazmente las iniciativas de conservación.

Methods and Results The chicks (Hy-line Brown) were treated with fecal microbiota suspension from different breeder hens to select the best donor. Treatment with fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) alone or in combination with inulin found that it improved gut microbiome in chicks. The organ indexes were increased on 7d, especially the bursa of fabricius index (P Conclusion Combination of homologous FMT and inulin promoted early growth and intestinal health of chicks.

Abstract

One of the most promising approaches to reach a high gain in inertial confinement fusion is the fast ignition scheme. In this scheme, a relativistic electron beam is generated; this passes through the imploded plasma and deposits parts of its energy in the core. However, the large angular spread of the relativistic electron beam and the poorly controlled compression of the target affect realization of the fast ignition technique. Here, we demonstrate that indirectly driven (that is, driven by X-rays generated inside a gold hohlraum) implosions with a ‘high-foot’ and a short-coast time of less than 200 ps allow us to tightly compress the shell. Furthermore, we show the ability to optimize the symmetry of the imploding shell by changing the hohlraum length, successfully tuning a suitable tube-shaped shell to compensate for the large angular spread of the relativistic electron beam and to enhance the electron-to-core coupling efficiency via resistive magnetic fields. Benefiting from those experimental techniques, a significant enhancement in neutron yield was achieved in our indirectly driven fast ignition experiments. These results pave the way towards high-coupling fast ignition experiments with indirectly driven targets similar to those at the National Ignition Facility. Experiments realizing the indirect-drive fast ignition scheme for inertial confinement fusion are reported. Enabled by a tightly compressed target, an increase of neutron yield is observed.

Abstract

To analyse the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of malignant thymic germ cell tumours (GCTs), in order to improve the accuracy of diagnosis of these tumours.Twenty-two patients (20 men, two women; age, 28 ± 8.64 years) with malignant thymic GCTs confirmed at histopathology were enrolled retrospectively, and their CT and MRI findings were analysed.According to the CT findings, malignant thymic GCTs usually manifest as a bulky mass that typically grows to both sides of the midline (20/22, 90.9%), with irregular shape (15/22, 68.2%), lobulation (12/22, 50%), ill-defined margin (9/22, 40.9%), and incomplete capsule (21/22, 95.5%). Twenty masses revealed heterogeneous density with multifocal necrosis or cystic change in 19 (86.4%). Most cases (16/18, 88.9%) showed mild to moderate enhancement, and the branch-like vessel was found in 14 (14/18, 77.8%) cases. The minimum apparent diffusion coefficient (ADCMRI is superior to CT in showing incomplete capsule, peritumoural oedema, heterogeneous signal, and necrotic or cystic change of GCTs. Branch-like enhancement and multifocal necrosis may help the diagnosis of malignant thymic GCTs.

Abstract

Two novel hybrid compounds, [{Mo(NO3)2(2,2′-bpy)}0.5{Mo6O17(2,2′-bpy)6}][PMo12O40] (1); [{Mn(2,2′-bpy)2}0.5{Mo6O17(2,2′-bpy)6}][PMo12O40] (2) (bpy = 2,2′-bpyridine), have been synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by physico-chemical and series of spectroscopic methods. Two rare compounds which are basically isostructural with similar cell parameters are composed of transition metal-oxide-based cluster cations (TMOC) and classical Keggin type {PMo12O40} anions. Both [{Mo(NO3)2(2,2′-bpy)}0.5{Mo6O17(2,2′-bpy)6}]n and [{Mn(2,2′-bpy)2}0.5{Mo6O17(2,2′-bpy)6}]n cluster cation fragments possess opened railway molybdenum-oxide-based infinite cation chains. Then through O⋯O bond interactions, the adjacent railway chains are linked together with inverse symmetry mode to generate two kinds of interesting 2D supramolecular positive layers accommodated with big ellipse {PMo12O40} anions. By H-bonding interactions, the alternative accumulations between layers and layers give rise to 3D supramolecular channel frameworks, and the {PMo12O40} anions from different layers each other also generate graphene-like negative inorganic sheets. The electrochemical behaviors and electrocatalytic activities of both compounds have been explored. The photocatalytic activities of compounds 1 and 2 for decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation also have been investigated. The catalytic performances for the tertbutyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) oxidation of styrene also were carried out. The results show that compounds 1 and 2 exhibit multifunctional catalytic performances.

Abstract

Stability and efficiency are two key indicators to evaluate the development prospect of perovskite materials in solar cells (SCs). The partial substitution of Cs or Rb for Formamidinium cation (FA) is proven to significantly improve the stability of FAPbI3. Phase compositions of Cs- and Rb-doped FAPbI3 play a crucial role in determining the stability, which still lack a deep understanding. Besides, bandgap variations upon adding Cs or Rb content also affect the SC efficiency, awaiting a detailed discussion. This work quantitatively analyzed the phase compositions of CsxFA1−xPbI3 and RbyFA1−yPbI3. Moreover, efficiencies of the CsxFA1−xPbI3 and RbyFA1−yPbI3 SCs were simulated using experimental data. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that the Cs0.2FA0.8PbI3 sample contains the largest amount of the perovskite phase with Pm-3m symmetry, the non-perovskite phase with P63mc symmetry of FAPbI3 is effectively suppressed and therefore the structural stability is significantly improved. However, efficiency of the Cs0.2FA0.8PbI3 SC is slightly lower than that of the Cs0.15FA0.85PbI3 SC, ascribed to its enlarged bandgap and consequent narrowed light absorption waveband. For the RbyFA1−yPbI3 samples, the Rb0.05FA0.95PbI3 sample shows the best structural stability, and the corresponding SC achieves the highest efficiency.

Abstract

Inspired by the lubrication mechanism of human articular cartilage tissue, the porous self-lubricating polyurethane (PU) materials with micron-meter pore were fabricated by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method with 60 wt% N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a coagulation agent. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images demonstrated that the cross-section morphology of the materials is similar to that of the sponge and adjacent macropores were connected by interpenetrating pores to exhibit an ‘ink-bottle’ type pore structure. Meanwhile, the porosity of the porous self-lubricating PU materials could be controlled by adjusting the PU solution concentrations and the oil content increased as the increasing of porosity. The results of centrifugation/heating test indicated that the porous self-lubricating PU materials have an excellent oil retention performance owing to the pore structure. The tribological properties of porous self-lubricating materials with different porosity under various loads and sliding velocities were investigated by a block-on-ring wear tester which revealed that excellent friction reduction and wear resistance properties of the porous self-lubricating materials were achieved by the lubricating oil squeezed from pores which the friction coefficient of the materials significantly reduced, from 0.174 to 0.078 with the increases of oil content. Furthermore, the lubrication mechanism of porous self-lubricating PU material was discussed as well.

Abstract

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performance may degrade substantially when linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals are spectrally-overlapped in time-frequency (TF) domain. In order to solve this problem, the single-source TF points selection algorithm based on Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) and Hough transform is studied in this paper. Firstly, the signal intersections in TF domain can be solved based on the Hough transform. Secondly, by removing multiple-source TF points at intersections according to the empirical threshold value which is calculated by using the statistical experiment method, we can get single-source TF points set. Then, based on the Euclidean distance operator, single-source TF points set belonging to each signal can be obtained according to the property that TF points of the same signal have the same eigenvector. Finally, the averaged spatial TF distribution matrix is constructed and DOA estimation is realized based on the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. In this way, the proposed algorithm can resolve the TF non-disjoint LFM signals because it can automatically select single-source TF points set of each signal. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithm possesses higher angular resolution and has pretty good DOA estimation precision compared with existing algorithms.

Abstract

A new organic–inorganic hybrid compound contained bi-capped Bi Keggin anion, [biim][PMo 1 V Mo 11 VI Bi1.24O40]·3H2O (1) (biim = biimidazole) has been firstly synthesized and characterized by IR, UV–Vis, XRD, XPS, elemental analyses, fluorescent spectrum and TG analysis. Compound 1 exhibits a novel 2-D supramolecular network structure constructed from {PMo 1 V Mo 11 VI Bi1.24O40} anions by O···O interactions, and further extends a 3-D supramolecular framework by bridges of biimidazole with N–H···O hydrogen bonding interactions. The compound 1 performs well catalytic property for epoxidation of styrene to styrene oxide. Moreover, compound 1 displays excellent photodegradation activity for methyl orange dye.

Abstract

We report an experimental investigation of a laser-gas-converter approach for generating high-yield ultrashort MeV positrons. We observe that MeV electrons with a high charge of several tens of nC can be well generated by a ∼ 6 J , ∼ 40 f s laser interacting with a high-density gas jet. However, it is shown that the propagation of the highly charged electron beam is significantly inhibited because the electrons are reflected by the sheath potential in the density decreasing region of the gas target, thus leading to a low positron yield. Consequently, by using an integrated nozzle-converter design to eliminate the density falling ramp of the gas target such that the electron refluxing is inhibited, we observe a significant enhancement of positron yield (up to a factor of 15), finally reaching a positron yield of 5 × 10 8 s r − 1 . This high-yield ultrashort MeV positron may have great potential toward the simulation of astrophysical pair plasma.

Abstract

To understand the prevalence and etiological characteristics of hand, foot and mouth disease(HFMD) in Yangzhou, so as to provide scientific basis for prevention and control of HFMD. HFMD cases from six sentinel hospitals in Yangzhou from January 2015 to December 2019 were taken as the subject of study. The epidemiological data of HFMD were analyzed by descriptive epidemiology method, the enterovirus were detected using RT-PCR method and the etiological characteristics were analyzed. The data were collected by Excel 2007 and statistically analyzed by SPSS22.0 software. A total of 1 151 positive cases were detected from all 2 129 HFMD clinical specimens collected in Yangzhou from 2015 to 2019, with a total positive rate of 54.06%, including 148 cases of EV71(6.95%), 382 cases of CA16(17.94%) and 621 cases of other enterovirus(29.17%). Abstract

A Dirac electron system in solids mimics relativistic quantum physics that is compatible with Maxwell's equations, with which we anticipate unified electromagnetic responses. We find a large orbital diamagnetism only along the interplane direction and a nearly temperature-independent electrical conductivity of the order of e^{2}/h per plane for the new 2D Dirac organic conductor, α-(BETS)_{2}I_{3}, where BETS is bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene. Unlike conventional electrons in solids whose nonrelativistic effects bifurcate electric and magnetic responses, the observed orbital diamagnetism scales with the electrical conductivity in a wide temperature range. This demonstrates that an electromagnetic duality that is valid only within the relativistic framework is revived in solids.

Abstract

In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a dogmatic set of rules, because the appropriateness of any assay largely depends on the question being asked and the system being used. Moreover, no individual assay is perfect for every situation, calling for the use of multiple techniques to properly monitor autophagy in each experimental setting. Finally, several core components of the autophagy machinery have been implicated in distinct autophagic processes (canonical and noncanonical autophagy), implying that genetic approaches to block autophagy should rely on targeting two or more autophagy-related genes that ideally participate in distinct steps of the pathway. Along similar lines, because multiple proteins involved in autophagy also regulate other cellular pathways including apoptosis, not all of them can be used as a specific marker for bona fide autophagic responses. Here, we critically discuss current methods of assessing autophagy and the information they can, or cannot, provide. Our ultimate goal is to encourage intellectual and technical innovation in the field.

Given that FK506 binding protein 51 (FKBP51) is upregulated in multiple cancers, we designed the present study to characterize its role as well as underlying regulatory mechanisms in glioma in the presence and absence of the chemotherapeutic carmustine (BCNU).Through lentiviral overexpression and shRNA knockdown of FKBP51, we examined the effects on BT325 glioma cell proliferation, migration and invasion using quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry, and transwell assay.The upregulation of FKBP51 resulted in significantly decreased BT325 cell proliferation and cell viability, cell cycle arrest, reduced BCNU chemosensitivity and AKT pathway inactivation. However, FKBP51-overexpressed BT325 cells showed enhanced migration and invasion, which was supported by corresponding increase in phosphorylated IKKα (p-IKKα), MMP-2, and MMP-9 levels, as well as increased NF-κB p65 nuclear translocation. By contrast, FKBP51-suppressed BT325 cells showed excessive proliferation and BCNU resistance due to increased p-AKT activation and attenuated migration and invasion.We demonstrated that the effects of FKBP51 on BT325 glioma cell proliferation, migration, invasion and BCNU chemosensitization are modulated via the AKT and NF-κB pathways. Furthermore, our findings suggest the potential of FKBP51 as a prognostic glioma biomarker and an indicator of patient response to chemotherapy.

Abstract

In inertial confinement fusion, electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) can be produced during high-power laser interacting with solid targets, which are intimately related to laser intensity and laser energy. In this study, EMPs generated by hybrid laser pulses coupling with targets are recorded and analyzed. The results indicate that a single picosecond laser gives birth to the most intense EMPs, but they are remarkably suppressed when a nanosecond laser-shooting target is triggered before the picosecond and femtosecond laser. One possible hypothesis is proposed based on x-rays inducing pre-ablation that generates pre-plasma at the surfaces of the picosecond target and femtosecond target, leading to a sharp drop both in the energy and number of the emitting hot electrons and protons. The findings will deepen our understanding of the mechanism of EMPs’ generation and will also open a new avenue to regulate EMPs by hybrid laser pulses.

43. Remote-sensing monitoring of rubber plantations using object-oriented characteristics from the vigorous period

Abstract

Natural rubber is one of the four major industrial raw materials in China, and the demand for it is increasing rapidly in China. However, due to geographic and climatic limitations, the rate of natural rubber production in China is significantly less than required to satisfy this demand. Therefore, to ensure the healthy development of China’s rubber industry, it is urgent to develop a method to rapidly and accurately monitor the planting and distribution of rubber forests in China. Existing studies have exploited the unique phenological characteristics of rubber plantations manifested by the spectral characteristics of the vigorous growth period and the deciduous period to identify rubber plantations through remote sensing. Unfortunately, the cloudy and rainy climate of rubber-growing regions makes it is difficult to obtain remote-sensing data in the optimal period. Therefore, the present study uses Planet images as the basic data and extracts typical spectral and textural features of rubber forests during the single vigorous growth period to construct a remote-sensing method to monitor rubber forests based on the object-oriented random forest algorithm, which uses all the spectral and texture features. The results show that the proposed random forest classification model achieves a high classification accuracy: the total classification accuracy reaches 89%, and the rubber producer’s accuracy and user’s accuracy both exceed 92%. This study can effectively solve the problem of lack image data with cloudless from deciduous period and provides a good theoretical basis for remote-sensing monitoring of China’s rubber forests, thereby facilitating the development of China’s rubber industry.

44. Optimal spatial resolution of remote-sensing imagery for monitoring cantaloupe greenhouses

Abstract

Plastic greenhouses are vital agricultural facilities to protect cash crops from disease and insects, especially in the Hainan region of China, which has high temperature and high humidity. Remote-sensing technology is an efficient means to quickly determine the spatial distribution of plastic greenhouses on the regional scale. With the rapid development of remote-sensing technology, and especially the increasing types of high-spatial-resolution remote-sensing imagery, many studies have obtained good results by using remote-sensing technology to monitor plastic greenhouses. However, the best spatial resolution of images for monitoring plastic greenhouses has yet to be studied. To address this issue, we use cantaloupe greenhouses as the research object and GF-2 images with 1m spatial resolution as data source. We then use the re-sampling method to generate images from these data with spatial resolutions of 0.5, 2, 3, and 5 m. The details of the spatial distribution (texture features and shape features) and the spectral features of the plastic greenhouses were then extracted from images of varying spatial resolution, and a remote-sensing monitoring method for cantaloupe greenhouses was constructed based on the object-oriented random forest algorithm, which combines spectral, texture and shape features, and the monitoring results are compared. The results show that the use of 2 m spatial resolution provides the highest monitoring accuracy of cantaloupe greenhouses (overall accuracy = 94.85% and KIA = 0.92). This study thus provides a theoretical basis for remote-sensing monitoring of greenhouse cantaloupes that satisfies the current demands of production accuracy.

Three POM-based host–guest compounds constituted by Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs): (4,4′-Hbpy)3 [PMo12O40]·2H2O (1); (4,4′-H2bpy)3[PMo12O40]2·3H2O (2) and (4,4′-H2bpy) (4,4′-Hbpy)·[PW12O40]·4H2O (3) (bpy = 4,4′-bpyridine) have been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, XPS spectra, powder XRD analyses, cyclic voltammetric measurements and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The three compounds all consist of Keggin-type POMs and 4,4′-bpy ligand, which are [PMo12O40]3− for 1–2 and [PW12O40]3− for 3. Through O···O interactions, Keggin POMs each other give rise to three different 3-D Supermolecular host structures, 4,4′-bpy and water molecules as guests accommodate different channels with H-bonding interactions. Discuss the pH role for the build POM based-hybrids contained 4,4′-bpy ligand. The photocatalytic properties of 1–3 have been investigated in the solid state.

Abstract

The Monte-Carlo rough surface code SURO is applied for the simulation of the carbon deposition and substrate erosion on rough surfaces. The energy, flux and angle of impinging particles calculated by the SDPIC code are employed as the input for the SURO simulations. The study of the carbon deposition and substrate erosion on different surface structures has been carried out with different plasma temperatures. The temporal evolution of the eroded substrate areal density on tungsten and carbon substrates has been studied under different plasma temperatures, which reveals that the material mixing process has an impact on the erosion of substrate material. For the plasma temperature of 10 eV, the eroded areal density for the tungsten substrate is about 1019 m−2, which is two orders of magnitude lower than that for the carbon substrate. As the plasma temperature increases to 20 eV, the discrepancy in the eroded substrate areal density between the tungsten and carbon substrates is reduced, i.e., one order of magnitude lower for the tungsten substrate.

Abstract

In this paper, a multihypothesis-based centralized Failure Diagnosis in Protection System (FDProSys) tool using phasor measurement units (PMU) data has been proposed to systematically and automatically detect malfunctions or failures in protective devices. The proposed diagnostic algorithm and FDProSys tool employs synchrophasor measurements to select a section of the network called ProNet, with possible device malfunction. Multiple hypotheses have been generated automatically based on node incidence matrices and multihypothesis theory. The malfunction of the protective devices in the presence of fault and relay operation is identified by comparing the five-digit message of the real event with multiple hypotheses. Trustworthiness of PMU data caused by common failures, such as communication outage and GPS problems, has also been considered by the proposed algorithm using the PMU status flag. The developed tool FDProSys can also work with supervisory control and data acquisition data assisted by manual analysis with less accuracy and is robust enough to several PMU/relay failures. Simulation results using the IEEE 14-bus, IEEE 57-bus, and IEEE 300-bus systems demonstrate the accuracy of the developed algorithm.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common type of epilepsy. Early surgical treatment is superior to prolonged medical therapy in refractory temporal lobe epilepsy. Successful surgical operations depend on the correct localization of the epileptogenic zone. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of hybrid TOF-PET/MR imaging–based multiparametric imaging in localizing the epileptogenic zone in patients with MR imaging-negative for temporal lobe epilepsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with MR imaging-negative temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent preoperative evaluation and 10 healthy controls were scanned using PET/MR imaging with simultaneous acquisition of PET and arterial spin-labeling. On the basis of the standardized uptake value and cerebral blood flow, receiver operating characteristic analysis and a logistic regression model were used to evaluate the predictive value for the localization. Statistical analyses were performed using statistical parametric mapping. The values of the standardized uptake value and cerebral blood flow, as well as the asymmetries of metabolism and perfusion, were compared between the 2 groups. Histopathologic findings were used as the criterion standard. RESULTS: Complete concordance was noted in lateralization and localization among the PET, arterial spin-labeling, and histopathologic findings in 12/20 patients based on visual assessment. Concordance with histopathologic findings was also obtained for the remaining 8 patients based on the complementary PET and arterial spin-labeling information. Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that the sensitivity and specificity of PET, arterial spin-labeling, and combined PET and arterial spin-labeling were 100% and 81.8%, 83.3% and 54.5%, and 100% and 90.9%, respectively. When we compared the metabolic abnormalities in patients with those in healthy controls, hypometabolism was detected in the middle temporal gyrus (P < .001). Metabolism and perfusion asymmetries were also located in the temporal lobe (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: PET/MR imaging–based multiparametric imaging involving arterial spin-labeling may increase the clinical value of localizing the epileptogenic zone by providing concordant and complementary information in patients with MR imaging-negative temporal lobe epilepsy.

Abstract

Epitaxial strain imposed in complex oxide ultrathin films is recognized as a powerful tool for controlling the ground state of correlated electron system. Here, we achieved simultaneous control of oxygen vacancies, orbital occupancy and magnetic ordering through the facile application of epitaxial strain, both tensile and compressive, in SrCoO3−δ oxygen “sponge” material rather than the ordinary manganites. The oxygen vacancies are enhanced greatly as the strain changes from smaller tensile 1.0% to larger tensile 2.0%, then to moderate compressive −1.0% in SrCoO3−δ films, associated with 3 − δ varying from ∼2.90 to ∼2.835, then to ∼2.72. Highest saturated magnetization is found in the thin films in small tension on La0.3Sr0.7Al0.65Ta0.35O3 substrate and lower values are found in larger tension on SrTiO3 and lowest values in moderate compression on LaAlO3. Meanwhile, electrons prefer to occupy the in-plan oriented orbitals for the tensile strain, in contrast to the preferential out-of-plane orbital occupancy for the compressive state associated with coupled intermediate spin-Co4+ (t2g4eg1)/high spin-Co3+ (t2g4eg2) in different proportions depending on strain states. Such controllable spin and orbital configurations lead to more robust magnetization in tensile strained SrCoO3−δ films than in its compressive counterpart. Our findings provide a nostrum for tailoring and controlling new magnetic, electronic and ionically active properties with strain engineering and further enrich orbital physics in cobaltites.
