The present work aimed to evaluate the chromatin compaction of rooster spermatozoa along the male reproductive tract, and to study the vas deferens lining cells, potentially involved in sperm maturation. Chromomycin A3 (CMA3) was used to determine the chromatin compaction of spermatozoa from testis (T), proximal (including epididymis, V1), intermediate (V2) and distal (V3) vas deferens, and ejaculate (E). Six Birchen Leonesa roosters were used. E was obtained in vivo by dorso-ventral massage. V1, V2 and V3 sperm were obtained post mortem (six pairs of vasa deferentia), by flushing. 11 Pág. Departamento de Reproducción animal, A classical chicken semen diluent (Lake's 7.1 diluent) was modified to have lowered osmolalities (ranging from 290 to 410 mOsm/kg). The modified medium with physiological osmolality of 325 mOsm/kg allowed cold storage of fresh semen for several days with very little loss of membrane integrity and motility, while high osmolalities inhibited motility. This modified medium was then used as base for freezing medium to test effects of the type and concentration of cryoprotective agent (CPA), and the cooling rate (CR). A number of CPAs (methylformamide, methylacetamide, dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMA), diethylformamide, and propylene glycol) were first compared by freezing semen with 0.6 mol/l of the respective CPA at a cooling rate of 250 °C/min. Post-thaw motility and membrane integrity were highest with DMA and DMF. Finally, in more detailed factorial experiments, semen from individual cocks or pooled semen was frozen using CRs of 4, 50, 250, and 440 °C/min and DMA concentrations ([DMA]) of 0.4, 0.6, 1.0, and 1.5 mol/l. Straws from each semen sample x treatment combination were divided for semen assessment at three different research groups for sperm motility, membrane integrity, kinked tails, and DNA fragmentation, using microscopy, computer assisted motility analysis, and flow cytometry. There were clear effects of both CR and [DMA] and their interaction. CRs 50 and 250 °C/min gave best post-thaw sperm performance. Higher DMA concentrations gave better post-thaw membrane integrity, but concentrations above 1.0 mol/l can decrease sperm velocity or even inhibit sperm motility. Aim The purpose of the study is to analyze whether a previous medical history of lower abdominal surgery (or pelvic radiotherapy) involves a different postoperative outcome in TEP inguinal repairs. Material & Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of 1252 TEP procedures included from 2015 to 2019 at our institution. We compared the short-term intraoperative difficulties and the postoperative outcome in patients with and without previous lower abdominal surgeries. The postoperative data collected included variables such as comorbidities, hernia classification, intraoperative complications, rate of conversion to open surgery, admission status, postoperative follow-up, chronic pain, and hernia recurrence. We defined a “surgical success” dichotomous variable only for patients in an outpatient setting. It included cases with no complications during surgery, no need for conversión, and no chronic pain, no readmission or recurrence during followup. Results Out of the 1252 TEP procedures, 250 (19%) had previous lower abdominal surgery (or pelvic radiotherapy). At the time of applying the “surgical success” variable we found a statistically significant difference in the conversion to open surgery rate between both groups (0.7% versus 5.6% p value 0.005). No differences were found in complications, readmissions, chronic pain, functional recovery or recurrence rates. Conclusions TEP procedure in patients with previous lower abdominal surgery showed a higher rate of conversion to open surgery compared to previously non operated patientes. The fact of having previous surgery did not imply however a worse postoperative outcome after a TEP procedure.

Background: Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) is one of the most common subtypes of arthritis among children in southeast Asia with higher progression of disease activity. Unsuccessful control of the disease may lead to long-term disability resulting in functional limitations that would affect productivity of the individual. Objective: The study determined the risk factors for persistently active disease among Filipino children aged 2 weeks to 18 years diagnosed with SJIA seen in the Section of Pediatric Rheumatology of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital (USTH) from June 2009 to June 2019. Methodology: A retrospective cohort study was done involving chart review of both clinical division and private division patients. The following parameters were determined: sex, age at diagnosis, time elapsed from symptom onset to diagnosis, joint involvement, inflammatory markers and extra-articular manifestation. Statistical analysis included frequencies, percentages and logistic regression for the risk factors of interest. Results: One hundred twenty-seven patients with SJIA who were appropriately treated for at least three years were included. Among which, 88 (69%) developed persistently active disease. Among them, 36 (41%) were diagnosed at 1-5 years old. Many were diagnosed (n=54, 61%) after five weeks. The most commonly affected joints were the wrists, knees and ankles. The most common contracture noted involved the cervical joint. Only 33 (26%) patients received biologic agents. Risk factors identified for the development of persistent disease activity were low hemoglobin levels at the time of diagnosis and after one month of treatment, elevated platelet count after a month, substantial joint count after three months and increased ESR after 6 months. Conclusion: The change or improvement of the joint count and in hemoglobin, platelet count and ESR levels after appropriate treatment may determine the risk for persistently active disease in Filipino children with SJIA.

9 Pàg., 1. Birchen and Blue Leonesa are two endangered chicken breeds mainly raised in Curueño Valley in North Spain. The establishment of a germplasm bank to guarantee the preservation of these breeds is needed. However, cockerels from different breeder flocks can show variance in semen cryoresistance.2. The following work focused on the sperm characterisation and cryopreservation of Birchen and Blue Leonesa cockerels from four different breeders. A total of 30 semen pools were analysed. Besides conventional sperm analysis, including motility by computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA) and DNA fragmentation by TUNEL, the present study tested a double staining method (MitoTrackerTM Green FM/propidium iodide). This gave simultaneous assessment of plasma and acrosomal and mitochondrial membranes, which were previously validated by SYBR-14/PI, CASA, aniline blue and TUNEL.3. No significant differences were found among fresh semen variables between breeds and breeders. Drainage canals have triggered peat subsidence and lowered groundwater table, enabling wildfires and peat degradation in Riau, Indonesia. This study examines the changes on groundwater table, peat subsidence rate, and carbon emission in response to deforestation and land cover changes. We established 31 study sites in some land cover types (i.e., oil palm plantation, acacia regrowth and shrub), with 124 monitoring shallow wells and 31 subsidence poles that were setup and have been monitored for 18 months. Groundwater table of all plots averaged -55 cm in Dosan Village, higher than that in Dayun Village (-66 cm). In accordance, peat had subsided in faster rate (8.4 cm year−1) in Dayun Village than that in Dosan (3.3 cm year−1). This average annual groundwater table has resulted in carbon emissions from peat decomposition up to 66 t CO2eq ha−1 year−1. On the other hand, canal discharge of these sites ranged from 2 to 73 dm3 s−1, averaging 26 dm3 s−1. These results evidence that land uses converted from peat forest, and the dimension of canal control the decrease in groundwater table, the pace of peat subsidence, and rate of carbon emissions in tropical peatlands.

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the most common autoimmune disorders in women of childbearing age. Simple Measure of Impact of Lupus Erythematosus in Youngsters (SMILEY) is the only health related quality of life (HRQOL) tool for pediatric SLE, which has been translated into many languages but is not yet available in Filipino. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to develop a Filipino translation of the SMILEY and to test the validity and reliability of this translation. Methodology: The SMILEY was translated into Filipino by a bilingual individual and back-translated by another bilingual individual blinded from the original English version. The translation was evaluated for content validity by a panel of experts and subjected to pilot testing. In the pilot, the SMILEY, together with the previously validated Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PEDSQL) 4.0 Generic Core Scale were administered to pediatric lupus patients and their parents on two separate occasions: a baseline and a re-test seven to fourteen days apart. Tests for convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were performed. Results: A total of fifty children and their parents were recruited. The mean age was 15.38±2.62 years (range 8-18 years), mean education level was high school. The mean duration of SLE was 28 months (range 1-81 months). Subjects found the questionnaires to be relevant, easy to understand and to answer. The validity of the SMILEY was demonstrated in terms of content validity, convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. Age, socioeconomic status and educational attainment did not significantly impact the scores. The difference between scores reported by children and parents was significant with SMILEY Total (p=0.0214), effect on Social Life (p=0.0000), and PEDSQL Physical Function (p=0.0460), with children reporting higher scores for these domains compared to their parents. Conclusion: SMILEY is a brief, easy to understand, valid and reliable tool for assessing specific HRQOL in pediatric SLE. It will be useful in providing better care, understanding and may offer critical information regarding the effect of SLE in the quality of life of our pediatric lupus patients. It will help physician understands the needs of their patient not only on treatment of the specific disease but as well as the impact of the treatment on their daily lives.

The work presents additional improvements on the strategy of the Fuel-Slurry Integrated Gasifier/Gas Turbine (FSIG/GT) concept for electric power generation applied to the case of Sugar Cane Bagasse (SCB). The process allows feeding solid fuel particles into pressurized reactors without the need for complex systems of sequential lock-hoppers. For that, the particulate fuel is mixed with water to produce a high dry solid content slurry that is pumped into a pressurized dryer. Since both the bubbling fluidized bed dryer and gasifier operate at similar pressures, the transference of dried particles to the gasifier can be accomplished with simple Archimedes screws. As the particles are dried before gasification, the process also circumvents the difficulties of fuel slurry ignition, which usually require pure oxygen combined with hydrocarbons. Significant progress has been made in the development of therapies for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These include agents which target interferons, cytokines, T lymphocytes and co-stimulatory molecules, B-lymphocytes and B stimulatory molecules. The latter are of special interest having the most robust efficacy data to date, ranging from clinical experience to clinical trials, with belimumab as the first Food and Drug Administration-approved biologic for the treatment of SLE. Given the wide disease heterogeneity, certain issues like clinical trial design and pharmacogenomics will continue to challenge drug development in SLE, there will always be a growing and compelling need for more of these drugs in order to alleviate the burden of illness in lupus patients.

Objectives To examine the descriptive epidemiology of the patient population referred to paediatric rheumatology centres (PRCs) in Southeast Asia (SEA) and to compare the frequency of conditions encountered with other PRC populations. Methods A web-based Registry for Childhood Onset Paediatric Rheumatic Diseases was established in 2009 and seven PRCs in four SEA countries, where paediatric rheumatologists are available, participated in a prospective 24 month data collection (43 months for Singapore). Results The number of patients analysed was 4038 (788 from Malaysia, 711 from the Philippines, 1943 from Singapore and 596 from Thailand). Over 70% of patients evaluated in PRCs in Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand had rheumatic diseases (RDs), as compared with one-half of the proportion seen in Singaporean PRCs, which was similar to the Western PRC experience. Among RDs diagnosed (n = 2602), JIA was the most common disease encountered in Malaysia (41%) and Thailand (61%) as compared with systemic vasculitides in the Philippines (37%) and Singapore (35%) among which Henoch-Schonlein purpura was the most prevalent. SLE and related diseases were more common, but idiopathic pain syndrome and abnormal immunological laboratory tests were rarer than those seen in the West. JIA subtype distributions were different among countries. Among non-RDs (n = 1436), orthopaedic and related conditions predominated (21.7-59.4%). Conclusion The frequencies of RDs seen by SEA PRCs were different from those in the West. Systemic vasculitides and SLE were common in addition to JIA. Paediatric rheumatologist availability and healthcare accessibility partially explain these observed discrepancies.

Aim Fructose consumption is associated with altered hepatic function and metabolic compromise and not surprisingly has become a focus for perinatal studies. We have previously shown that maternal fructose intake results in sex specific changes in fetal, placental and neonatal outcomes. In this follow-up study we investigated effects on maternal, fetal and neonatal hepatic fatty acid metabolism and immune modulation. Methods Pregnant rats were randomised to either control (CON) or high-fructose (FR) diets. Fructose was given in solution and comprised 20% of total caloric intake. Blood and liver samples were collected at embryonic day 21 (E21) and postnatal day (P)10. Maternal liver samples were also collected at E21 and P10. Liver triglyceride and glycogen content was measured with standard assays. Hepatic gene expression was measured with qPCR. Results Maternal fructose intake during pregnancy resulted in maternal hepatic ER stress, hepatocellular injury and increased levels of genes that favour lipogenesis. These changes were associated with a reduction in the NLRP3 inflammasome. Fetuses of mothers fed a high fructose diet displayed increased hepatic fructose transporter and reduced fructokinase mRNA levels and by 10 days of postnatal age, also have hepatic ER stress, and elevated IL1β mRNA levels. At P10, FR neonates demonstrated increased hepatic triglyceride content and particularly in males, associated changes in the expression of genes regulating beta oxidation and the NLRP3 inflammasome. Further, prenatal fructose results in sex-dependant changes in levels of key clock genes. Conclusions Maternal fructose intake results in age and sex-specific alterations in maternal fetal and neonatal free fatty acid metabolism, which may be associated in disruptions in core clock gene machinery. How these changes are associated with hepatic inflammatory processes is still unclear, although suppression of the hepatic inflammasome, as least in mothers and male neonates may point to impaired immune sensing.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a medium vessel vasculitis with predilection to affect the coronary arteries. While intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) remains the standard primary treatment, the cost remains a big burden for parents of patients in developing countries. Steroids do have a role in IVIG-resistant KD but studies on its benefit in addition to IVIG as primary treatment are conflicting. In our institution, parents who cannot afford IVIG consented to intravenous pulse methylprednisolone (IV MP) as an alternative primary treatment. Objective: To review the outcome of KD patients treated with IV MP as primary treatment. Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for KD and treated with IV MP (30 mg/kg/dose, maximum of 1 gm/dose, given once daily for 3 consecutive days) plus high dose Aspirin from January 2006 to December 2013. Results: A total of 36 patients were included in the study with a mean age of 4.2 years (range 0.4-12.6). The F:M ratio was 1:1. Majority (75% - 27/36) of the patients received the treatment before the tenth day of illness. There was clinical improvement in all patients with lysis of fever and resolution of all signs and symptoms immediately after the first dose of IV MP. None of the patients had a relapse of KD. The CRP significantly decreased after the treatment in all patients. For all patients, baseline echocardiography was done by a single pediatric cardiologist and was repeated after 2 months, 6 months, then yearly. At baseline, 36 patients had pericardial effusion, 13 with perivascular brightness, 15 with coronary ectasia and 8 with valvular abnormalities (MR, AR, TR). Follow up evaluation after 2 months showed no echocardiographic abnormalities in all patients, up until the yearly echo. None of the patients developed coronary aneursysm. There was no reported immediate nor long term side effects from the steroid therapy. Conclusion: Intravenous methylprednisolone is effective in controlling the clinical manifestations of KD and in preventing cardiac complications. It is safe and well-tolerated by patients. It can be an alternative first line treatment for KD patients whose parents cannot afford the high cost of IVIG.

Maternal nutritional restriction has been shown to induce impairments in a number of organ systems including the ovary. We have previously shown that maternal undernutrition induces fetal growth restriction and low birth weight, and results in an offspring ovarian phenotype characteristic of premature ovarian aging with reduced ovarian reserve. In the present study, we set out to investigate the underlying mechanisms that lead offspring of undernourished mothers to premature ovarian aging. Pregnant dams were randomized to 1) a standard diet throughout pregnancy and lactation (control), 2) a calorie-restricted (50% of control) diet during pregnancy, 3) a calorie-restricted (50% of control) diet during pregnancy and lactation, or 4) a calorie-restricted (50% of control) diet during lactation alone. The present study shows that early life undernutrition-induced reduction of adult ovarian follicles may be mediated by increased ovarian endoplasmic reticulum stress in a manner that increased follicular apoptosis but not autophagy. These changes were associated with a loss of ovarian vessel density and are consistent with an accelerated ovarian aging phenotype. Whether these changes are mediated specifically by a reduction in the local antioxidant environment is unclear, although our data suggest the possibility that ovarian melatonin may play a part in early life nutritional undernutrition and impaired offspring folliculogenesis.

Stereotactic surgery is used to place electrodes or cannulas in the brain in order to study the function of several brain structures in preclinical research. The hippocampus has been extensively studied with this methodology due to its involvement in a wide range of neurological, cognitive, emotional, and affective disorders. However, the effects of stereotactic surgery on coordination and motor activity should be evaluated in order to determine whether this surgical procedure causes any neurological alterations that may bias the results of studies incorporating this technique.We evaluated the effects of stereotactic surgery and implantation of a cannula into the hippocampus of female Wistar rats on the motor activity, forced swim, and rotarod tests. The stage of the oestrous cycle was included in the statistical analysis.Stereotactic surgery had no impact on any of the motor activity variables assessed in the open field (squares crossed, time spent in grooming, and rearing), forced swim (turning behaviour, lateral swimming, latency to first immobility, and time spent immobile), and rotarod (latency to fall) tests, compared with intact rats. Regardless of surgical manipulation, rats in the metestrus and diestrus stages crossed a greater number of squares and displayed longer immobility times than those in the proestrus and estrus stages.Stereotactic surgery for cannula placement in the dorsal hippocampus does not affect coordination and motor activity in rats. We can therefore conclude that this procedure has no neurological complications that may interfere in the interpretation of results of studies applying this technique.

There has been a growing interest among dental educators regarding the opportunities offered by community-based dental education as a means to allow dental students to assume their role as health professionals in the real world. Although several dental schools have integrated community-based education into their curricula, most have not engaged their students in the development of competencies to address dental health needs at the community level. The purpose of this article is to discuss the teaching-learning experiences in dental public health at the undergraduate level in the Faculty of Stomatology at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (FS-UPCH) in Lima, Peru. The teaching-learning activities in dental public health at the FS-UPCH consist of two well-defined stages: experiences in low-income urban communities and experiences in low-income rural communities. Both stages have been designed to make it possible for students to acquire competency in addressing oral health needs at the community level as well as to enlarge and deepen their knowledge about the social and health situation in Peru. In community-based dental education, students are not only placed in community settings to treat individual patients, but also challenged to consider dental public health issues, including the administrative aspects of dental services.

A retrospective analysis evaluated pregnancy rates and embryo losses with in vitro-produced embryos in a commercial embryo transfer program on 15 different beef farms. Recipients were beef cows and heifers (n = 1841) that were synchronized with 5 different protocols and transferred at a fixed-time (FTET). Recipients were examined by ultrasonography on Day 0, and those with a corpus luteum (CL) or a follicle ≥8 mm in diameter and with body condition score 2 to 4 (1 to 5 scale) were synchronized. The synchronization treatments were as follows. (T1) Recipients received an intravaginal device with 0.5 g of progesterone plus 2 mg of oestradiol benzoate on Day 0; device removal, plus 500 μg of cloprostenol (prostaglandin F2α), 400 IU of eCG, and 0.5 mg of oestradiol cypionate on Day 8; and FTET on Day 17. (T2) This treatment was similar to T1 but 1 mg of oestradiol cypionate was injected at device removal instead of 0.5 mg of oestradiol cypionate. (T3) This treatment was similar to T1 except that animals were tail-painted on Day 8 and observed on Day 10. Those with the tail-paint intact on Day 10 received 100 μg of gonadorelin (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) and all recipients were FTET on Day 17. (T4) Recipients received a progesterone device on Day 0; device removal, prostaglandin F2α, and eCG on Day 5; gonadotropin-releasing hormone on Day 8; and FTET on Day 15. (T5) Recipients received a progesterone device and 2 mg of oestradiol benzoate on Day 0; device removal, prostaglandin F2α, and eCG on Day 6; gonadotropin-releasing hormone on Day 9; and FTET on Day 16. On the day of FTET all recipients with CL ≥18 mm in diameter (G1), ≥16 and 0.1). Recipients with G1 (443/953, 46%) and G2 (221/462, 47%) CL had higher pregnancy rates than those with G3 CL (23/71, 32%). SUMMARY. Mediastinal lymphoma is a rare cause of tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). While most reports described in the literature have been related to prior or concurrent chemoradiation therapy, TEF has rarely been reported as the initial presentation of lymphoma. We report on a young woman found to have Hodgkin's disease complicated by TEF that required emergent placement of an esophageal stent. The lymphoma was successfully treated and, due to stent-related symptoms, removal was desired but not technically possible. We discuss options that may prevent this predicament in the future.

A retrospective analysis of factors that affect pregnancy rates from 4214 fresh in vitro-produced (IVP) embryos that were transferred at a fixed-time (FTET) in 20 different farms. Recipients were all cycling cows or heifers that were synchronized with 1 of 3 treatments: 1) treatments with progesterone (P4) devices and 2 mg of oestradiol benzoate (EB) on Day 0 (day of insertion) and 24 h after device removal (Day 8); 2) treatments with P4 devices and EB on Day 0, but with 0.5 mg of oestradiol cypionate (ECP) at device removal (Day 8); or 3) treatments with P4 devices and GnRH on Day 0 and a second GnRH 60 h after device removal (Day 5). Cows in all treatment groups also received 500 µg of cloprostenol (prostaglandin F2α) at the time of P4 device removal and 400 IU of eCG either at device removal or 3 days before device removal. All embryos were transferred 7 or 8 days after the expected time of oestrus (24 h after EB, 48 h after ECP or at the time of the second GNRH for each synchronization treatment, respectively). On the day of embryo transfer, recipients were examined by ultrasonography and those with corpus luteum >14 mm in diameter received a fresh, IVP embryo in the uterine horn ipsilateral to the corpus luteum. The collection of high numbers of oocytes for in vitro embryo production in the cow depends on the number of antral follicles available for aspirations. The number of antral follicles varies significantly among cows and can be estimated by ovarian ultrasonography or measurement of serum concentrations of antimullerian hormone (AMH). The AMH is secreted by the granulosa cells of small antral follicles and serum concentrations are independent of the stage of the oestrous cycle. Therefore, it may be useful as a tool to select oocyte donors for in vitro embryo production. An experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of breed of cattle and the correlation of serum AMH concentrations on the number of viable oocytes and embryos produced in vitro. Cumulus-oocyte complex were collected during 44 ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration sessions performed at random stages of the oestrous cycle without superstimulation in 14 Bonsmara, 11 Braford, and 19 Brangus cows that were used for commercial in vitro embryo production using frozen-thawed semen from bulls of the same breed. A retrospective analysis of in vitro production (IVP) data was done to determine the influence of breed and season on the production of viable oocytes and embryos. Cumulus‐oocyte complexes (COC) were obtained from 1946 ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration (ovum pickup) sessions performed at random stages of the oestrous cycle without superstimulation in Bos taurus and Bos indicus donors in commercial IVP in Argentina. Frozen-thawed conventional semen was used in beef cattle and conventional (n = 139) and sexed-selected (n = 481) semen in dairy cattle. The COC were classified, matured in B-199 medium, fertilized in IVF-SOF medium (Day 0), and cultured in SOF medium supplemented with 0.4% BSA under oil at 38.8°C, 5.5% CO2, and saturated humidity for 7 days. The number of viable COC and transferable embryos in each breed and season were compared by ANOVA and means were compared by Fisher’s Least Significant Difference test. Proportions were first transformed by arcsin and then analysed by ANOVA. An experiment was designed to evaluate in vitro embryo production following the use of frozen-thawed conventional or Y-sexed semen from a single Brangus and a single Braford bull of proven fertility. Semen was obtained by splitting the same ejaculate to be frozen directly or sex-sorted and then frozen. Oocytes were obtained from 69 ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration (ovum pickup) sessions performed at random stages of the oestrous cycle without superstimulation in 24 Brangus and 10 Braford cows and heifers. Viable oocytes (n = 1120) were matured in TCM-199 medium with NaHCO3 and supplemented with 1% fetal bovine serum. Frozen-thawed sperm from the Brangus and Braford bulls were selected with Percoll for IVF, capacitated in Fert Medium, and used at a final concentration of sperm per milliliter for conventional (non-sexed) semen and 2 × 106 sperm mL–1 for Y-sexed semen. After 16 h (sexed) or 18 h (conventional) of co-incubation with oocytes in Fert Medium, presumptive zygotes were denuded and cultured in SOF supplemented with 0.4% BSA under oil at 37°C, 5% CO2, and saturated humidity for 7 days. The total number of oocytes matured and fertilized from the Brangus donors was 538 and 318 for conventional and sexed semen, respectively. The total numbers of oocytes matured and fertilized from the Braford donors were 139 and 125 for conventional and sexed semen, respectively. There has been a growing interest among dental educators regarding the opportunities offered by community-based dental education as a means to allow dental students to assume their role as health professionals in the real world. Although several dental schools have integrated community-based education into their curricula, most have not engaged their students in the development of competencies to address dental health needs at the community level. The purpose of this article is to discuss the teaching-learning experiences in dental public health at the undergraduate level in the Faculty of Stomatology at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (FS-UPCH) in Lima, Peru. The teaching-learning activities in dental public health at the FS-UPCH consist of two well-defined stages: experiences in low-income urban communities and experiences in low-income rural communities. Both stages have been designed to make it possible for students to acquire competency in addressing oral health needs at the community level as well as to enlarge and deepen their knowledge about the social and health situation in Peru. In community-based dental education, students are not only placed in community settings to treat individual patients, but also challenged to consider dental public health issues, including the administrative aspects of dental services.

O objetivo do trabalho é propor a integração do IDMEF com um modelo XML de assinatura digital de conteúdo, denominada variante IDMEF, proporcionando segurança da mensagem com o uso de qualquer protocolo de comunicação. Como resultado, o artigo discute uma análise comparativa entre o protocolo IDXP e a variante proposta.

An experiment was designed to evaluate in vivo and in vitro embryo production following the use of frozen–thawed conventional or Y-sexed semen from a Brangus bull with known high fertility. For in vivo embryo production, Brangus heifers (n = 12) were superovulated twice in a crossover design and inseminated with sexed or conventional semen. On Day 0, all heifers received an intravaginal progesterone device (DIB 1 g, Syntex S.A., Buenos Aires, Argentina) and 2.5 mg oestradiol benzoate and 50 mg progesterone (Progestar, Syntex S.A.) by intramuscular injection (IM). On Day 4, heifers were superstimulated with 200 mg of NIH-FSH-P1 Folltropin-V (Bioniche Animal Health, Belleville, Ontario, Canada) in twice-daily decreasing doses over 4 days. In the a.m. and p.m. of Day 6, all heifers received PGF2a (Ciclase, Syntex) and DIBs were removed in the p.m.. In the a.m. of Day 8, heifers received 100 μg de Gonadolerin (Gonasyn, Syntex S.A.) and were randomly allocated to receive either one straw of conventional semen (24 × 106 sperm per dose) 12 and 24 h later or two straws of sexed semen (2.4 × 106 sperm per dose) 18 and 24 h after GnRH. Ova/embryos were collected nonsurgically on Day 15 and evaluated following IETS recommendations. Means were compared by t-test. Mean ( ± s.e.m.) number of ova/embryos, fertilized ova, and transferable embryos were 14.8 ± 2.7, 9.4 ± 1.8, and 7.1 ± 1.7 v. 16.8 ± 3.1, 9.9 ± 2.5, and 8.1 ± 2.0 for donors inseminated with conventional or sexed semen, respectively (P > 0.6). For in vitro production, oocytes were obtained from 50 ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration (OPU) sessions that was performed at random stages of the oestrous cycle and without superstimulation in 22 Brangus cows and heifers. Oocytes were classified and matured in TCM-199 medium with NaHCO3 and supplemented with 1% fetal bovine serum. Semen samples from the same bull used for in vivo embryo production were selected using Percoll and capacitated in Fert medium and used at a final concentration of sperm/mL for nonsexed semen and 2 × 106 sperm mL–1 for sexed semen. After 16 h (sexed) or 18 h (conventional) in Fert medium, zygotes were denuded and cultured in SOF supplemented with 0.4% BSA under oil at 37°C, 5% CO2 and saturated humidity for 7 days. The total number of oocytes matured and fertilized was 528 and 318 for conventional and sexed semen, respectively. Means were compared by t-test and proportions by chi-squared test. Este estudio presenta el resultado de una propuesta metodológica para estimar el tamaño de un pedido de billetes para la economía costarricense, la cual está enmarcada por tres componentes básicos: incremento en demanda por billetes (variación en el consumo), reemplazo de billetes y existencias en bóvedas. En términos generales, se desarrolló un modelo de demanda anual para la variable valor de los billetes en circulación, utilizando la técnica econométrica de Mínimos Cuadrados Ordinarios. La mejor ecuación contiene como variables explicativas, el PIB nominal rezagado un periodo, la tasa de inflación esperada y la población ocupada; el diagnóstico amplio brindó resultados robustos, y la capacidad de pronóstico se comprobó mediante la evaluación de los estadísticos correspondientes y de la aplicación de un caso práctico. Además, se incorporaron mejoras al cálculo de las tasas de reemplazo de fórmulas por denominación, así como a las existencias de billetes y se hizo un análisis cualitativo de otros factores que podrían incidir en la determinación del volumen de un pedido de billetes.

BackgroundWe have shown recently that maternal undernutrition (UN) advanced female pubertal onset in a manner that is dependent upon the timing of UN. The long-term consequence of this accelerated puberty on ovarian function is unknown. Recent findings suggest that oxidative stress may be one mechanism whereby early life events impact on later physiological functioning. Therefore, using an established rodent model of maternal UN at critical windows of development, we examined maternal UN-induced changes in offspring ovarian function and determined whether these changes were underpinned by ovarian oxidative stress.Methodology/principal findingsOur study is the first to show that maternal UN significantly reduced primordial and secondary follicle number in offspring in a manner that was dependent upon the timing of maternal UN. Specifically, a reduction in these early stage follicles was observed in offspring born to mothers undernourished throughout both pregnancy and lactation. Additionally, antral follicle number was reduced in offspring born to all mothers that were UN regardless of whether the period of UN was restricted to pregnancy or lactation or both. These reductions were associated with decreased mRNA levels of genes critical for follicle maturation and ovulation. Increased ovarian protein carbonyls were observed in offspring born to mothers UN during pregnancy and/or lactation and this was associated with peroxiredoxin 3 hyperoxidation and reduced mRNA levels; suggesting compromised antioxidant defence. This was not observed in offspring of mothers UN during lactation alone.ConclusionsWe propose that maternal UN, particularly at a time-point that includes pregnancy, results in reduced offspring ovarian follicle numbers and mRNA levels of regulatory genes and may be mediated by increased ovarian oxidative stress coupled with a decreased ability to repair the resultant oxidative damage. Together these data are suggestive of maternal UN potentially contributing to premature ovarian ageing in offspring.

Several niobium plates were cold-rolled at room temperature to a total reduction of 60% maintaining the geometry of the zone of deformation constant for each plate. Pole figures were obtained by means of the Schulz x-ray reflection technique from various depths in the thickness direction for plates rolled with different ∆, the ratio of the mean height of the deformation zone to its contact length. Severe texture gradients were noted and characterized for Δ>1; a modified texture different from the normal texture was observed at intermediate through-the-thickness locations. Both lateral widening and microhardness gradients were also in evidence for this case. No previously proposed theoretical explanation could account for these results.

Circulating immune complexes were investigated in sera of 13 patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. A significant inhibition was observed in the complement-dependent rosette formation (EAC) in 6 cases; 2 patients presented an increased anticomplementary activity; antilymphocyte antibodies were demonstrated in 2 patients. The levels of C3d and immunoconglutinins were also increased; there were no differences in the total hemolytic complement between patients and normal controls. There was a significant correlation between C3d and immunoconglutinins with the inhibition of the EAC rosette formation test. These results provide evidence for the presence of circulating immune complexes in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.

This research was an attempt to determine the cerebral areas involved in focal epileptic seizures accompanied by psychic manifestations. Six types of partial seizures involving psychic symptomatology and phonatory seizures were included in the study. Sixty-one clinical records of focal epilepsy, which had been revealed by means of a CT-scan examination, were analyzed and a subsample of 25 patients with psychic symptoms was selected. The scans taken of the lesions were transferred to a six-level standard template built for this purpose. Subsequently, templates of patients with the same type of seizures were superimposed. The critical zones for the seven types of seizures studied are presented. A clear correlation was found between these results and our present knowledge of functional brain organization.
