The treatment role of Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) in proximal rectal cancers (PRC) is still debated. Partial Mesorectal Excision (PME) can reduce morbidity in PRC patients. The purpose of this study was to compare short-term clinical and long-term oncological outcomes between the two groups. A total of 157 PRC patients were enrolled in this study (114 performed with PME and 43 with TME). The two groups were compared in terms of perioperative and long-term oncological outcomes. The overall postoperative complications rate was higher in TME group (18.4% vs. 32.5%, p < 0.05). The incidence of diverting ileostomy was also significantly higher in TME group (86.0% vs. 2.6%, p < 0.001). Overall survival rates for 3, 5, and 7 years in PME and TME group accordingly were: 94.6%, 89.3%, 81.5% and 93.2%, 87.6%, 78.4% (p = 0.324). Disease-free survival rates for 3, 5, and 7 years in PME and TME group were: 90.2%, 84.5%, 78.6% and 88.7%, 81.2%, 75.3% (p = 0.297), respectively. Local recurrence rates for 3, 5, and 7 years in PME and TME group were: 2.6%, 6.1%, 8.8% and 4.6%, 9.3%, 11.2% (p = 0.061), respectively. PME is feasible and can be safely performed in PRC patients with favorable oncological outcomes. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of using UV light instead of formaldehyde in disinfection of hatching eggs on the microbial load, shell and yolk compositions, embryo development, hatching results and chick characteristics. 552 hatching eggs were divided into formaldehyde fumigation and disinfection with UV groups. After disinfection, bacteriological growth was not observed in groups. While the difference between the groups in terms of hatching results was insignificant, it was determined that the incubation period in the UV group was shorter than that of formaldehyde group. On the hatching day, relative chick weight and weight of bursa Fabricus were found to be higher in the UV group  . UV light can be used as an alternative to formaldehyde as disinfection of hatching eggs because it is easy to use and does not cause any negative effects on egg shell structure, embryo development, hatching results and chick characteristics.

Background: The hawthorn fruit is an interesting medicinal plant that has several biological features, especially related to anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-modulating actions, and boosting general health. In this study, we aimed to clarify the immunological effects of hawthorn vinegar on immunity and general health. We also focused on three different production processes to improve the antioxidant activity of hawthorn vinegar (2) Methods: In the study, besides the traditional production of hawthorn vinegar (N), thermal pasteurization (P) and ultrasound (U) techniques were applied to vinegars. A total of 56 female adult Wistar albino rats were randomly allocated into seven groups; Control, N0.5 (regular vinegar; 0.5 mL/kgbw), N1 (regular vinegar; 1 mL/kgbw), P0.5 (pasteurized vinegar; 0.5 mL/kgbw), P1 (pasteurized vinegar; 1 mL/kgbw), U0.5 (ultrasound treated vinegar; 0.5 mL/kgbw), and U1 (ultrasound treated vinegar; 1 mL/kgbw). Vinegars were administered by oral gavage daily. The average weight gains, body mass index, and blood hematological parameters were measured, and the Neutrophil Lymphocyte ratio was calculated. The plasma IL-1β and TNF-α values, and MDA, IL-1β and TNF-α values of intestinal tissue, were determined. Also, the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method was applied to determine the expressions of TNF-α and IL-1β in duodenum. (3) Results: There was a decreasing tendency in the average weight gains in all vinegar groups compared to the control group. In addition, there was an increase in NL ratio in all vinegar groups, although not significant. There were no statistical differences among all vinegar groups, although decreases were observed in plasma IL-1β. Also, the plasma TNF-α values showed slight increases in high-dose-of-vinegar groups (N1, P1 and U1), although not significant. In addition, the intestinal tissue IL-1β value tended to increase in groups N0.5, N1 and P0.5, while it tended to decrease in P1, U0.5 and U1. On the other hand, there were slight increases in the TNF-α values of intestinal tissue in all groups compared to control, although these were not significant. Furthermore, the intensive expressions of TNF-α and IL-1β were determined in groups U0.5 and U1. (4) Conclusions: The results suggest that either high doses or ultrasound applications of hawthorn vinegar have positive effects on intestinal health, boosting immunity and general health.

Background: It has been reported that the inflammatory process plays a role in the pathophysiology of frailty in elderly individuals and that diet is effective in regulating chronic inflammation., Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effects of nutritional status and dietary inflammatory index on frailty and activities of daily living in the elderly., Method: A cross-sectional study in a hospital in Turkey has been carried out with 187 over the age of 65 who presented to the geriatric outpatient clinic participants. Anthropometric measurements of the patients were recorded, and the dietary inflammatory index (DII) was calculated using the 24-h dietary recall method. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to determine the malnutrition risk, the FRAIL scale was used for frailty assessment, and Katz and Lawton & Brody scales were used for daily living activities., Results: The mean age of the elderly is 70.83 ± 4.98 years. The frailty rate was determined to be 28.3%. The DII score was determined as 4.41 ± 5.16 in frail patients and 1.62 ± 4.39 in non-frail patients (p < 0.05). While DII showed a negative correlation with the Lawton & Brody scale score (r =  - 0.353), MNA was positively correlated to the Katz score (r = 0.386, p = 0.000) and the Lawton & Brody score (r = 0.475). In addition, one-unit increase in the MNA score was associated with a 29% decrease in the risk of frailty., Conclusions: The dietary inflammatory index was found to be high in frail and malnourished individuals. Although there's growing information about the long-term oncological effects of robotic surgery for rectal cancer, the procedure is still relatively new. This study aimed to assess the long-term oncological results of total mesorectal excision (TME) performed laparoscopically versus robotically in the setting of rectal cancer. Restrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database. A total of 489 laparoscopic (L-TME) and 183 robotic total mesorectal excisions (R-TME) were carried out by a single surgeon between 2013 and 2023. The groups were compared in terms of perioperative and long-term oncological outcomes. In the R-TME and L-TME groups, male sex predominated (75.4% and 57.3%, respectively), although the robotic group was significantly greater (p = 0.008). There was no conversion in R-TME group, whereas three (0.6%) converted to open surgery in L-TME group. The R-TME group had a statistically significant higher number of distal rectal tumors (85%) compared to the L-TME group (54.6%). Only three (1.7%) patients in the R-TME group received abdomineperineal resection (APR); in contrast, 25 (5%) patients in the L-TME group received APR (p < 0.001). For R-TME, the mean follow-up was 70.7 months (range 18-138) and for L-TME, it was 60 months (range 14-140). Frequency of completed mesorectum was significantly greater in R-TME group (98.9% vs 94.2%, p < 0.001). The 5 year overall survival rates for R-TME and L-TME groups were 89.6% and 88.7%, respectively. The 5 year disease-free survival for R-TME and L-TME groups were 84.1% and 81.1%, respectively. The local recurrences rates were 7.6% and 6.3%, respectively in R-TME and L-TME groups (p = 0.274). R-TME is characterized by no conversion and improved mesorectal integrity. Background: This study aimed to compare perioperative, long-term oncological, and anorectal functional outcomes of robotic total mesorectal excision (R-TME) and laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (L-TME) sphincter-saving total mesorectal excision in female patients with rectal cancer., Methods: Retrospective analysis of prospectively maintained database was performed. Sixty-eight cases (L-TME, n = 34; R-TME, n = 34) were performed by a single surgeon (January 2014-January 2019). Patient characteristics, perioperative recovery, postoperative complications, pathology results, and oncological outcomes were compared between the two groups., Results: Clinical characteristics did not differ between the groups. Mean operating time was longer in R-TME (165.50 ± 95.50 vs. 124.50 ± 82.60 min, p < 0.001). There was no conversion to open surgery in both groups. Mesorectal integrity was complete in both groups (100%). Length of distal and circumferential resection margins (CRM) did not differ between groups. CRM involvement was observed in 1 (2.8%) and 1 (2.8%) in L-TME and R-TME patients, respectively. Incidence of anastomotic leakage was 5.8% (n = 2) in L-TME and 8.8% (n = 3) in R-TME, respectively. Mean length of follow-up was 62.5 (36-102) months for R-TME and 63 (36-103) months for L-TME. Five-year overall survival rates were 92.8% in L-TME and 89.6% in R-TME. Disease-free survival rates were 87.5% in L-TME and 89.6% in R-TME. Local recurrence rates were 3.0% for both groups. Mean Wexner score for L-TME and R-TME patients was: 9.42 ± 8.23 and 9.22 ± 3.64 (p = 0.685), respectively. Daily stool frequency was similar between groups., Conclusion: Robotic total mesorectal excision (R-TME) and laparoscopic TME (L-TME) have similar perioperative, oncological, and anorectal functional results in female patients with rectal cancer. The hawthorn fruit, a member of the Rosaceae family, is a medicinal plant with numerous therapeutic properties. It has a wide range of variants, with Crataegus tanacetifolia being the most widely recognized species in the world. The hawthorn fruit has various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, immune-modulating, and anti-carcinogenic properties. This study focused on improving the antioxidant activity of hawthorn vinegar via different methods. We also aimed to investigate the influence of its hepatic antioxidant abilities on health and extend the shelf life of the vinegar. In the study, the vinegar was produced from the hawthorn fruit, and thermal pasteurization and ultrasound techniques were applied. A total of 56 female adult Wistar-Albino rats were allocated into seven groups and administered hawthorn fruit vinegar via oral gavage on a daily basis. The experimental groups included rats treated with pasteurized vinegar (HVP), ultrasound-treated rats (HVU), and an untreated group that received regular vinegar (HVN) at two different dosage levels (0.5 and 1 mL/kg). The SOD, MDA, and CAT antioxidant levels were measured using the ELISA method in plasma and liver tissue samples. The total plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, AST, and ALT values were quantified using commercially available kits. The levels of SOD and CAT in the plasma and liver were found to be significantly higher in the HVU1 group compared to all other groups. Furthermore, the HVU1 cohort exhibited the highest HDL value in plasma. The plasma LDL levels were comparably low in both the thermal-pasteurized and ultrasound-treated groups. There were significant expressions of both CAT and SOD in the liver tissues of the HVU groups (analyzed immunohistochemically). These results indicated that hawthorn vinegar administration with 1 mL/kg in group HVU1 could significantly enhance antioxidant capacity in the liver and, consequently, overall health. It can be suggested that the possible therapeutic effects of hawthorn vinegar may boost its antioxidant capabilities and contribute to an overall improvement in quality of life.

Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of abdominal computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and interrogate the relationship between abdominal CT findings and patient demographic features, clinical findings, and laboratory test results as well as the CT atherosclerosis score in the abdominal aorta., Methods: This study was designed as a multicenter retrospective study. The abdominal CT findings of 1.181 patients with positive abdominal symptoms from 26 tertiary medical centers with a positive polymerase chain-reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were reviewed. The frequency of ischemic and non-ischemic CT findings as well as the association between CT findings, clinical features, and abdominal aortic calcific atherosclerosis score (AA-CAS) were recorded., Results: Ischemic and non-ischemic abdominal CT findings were detected in 240 (20.3%) and 328 (27.7%) patients, respectively. In 147 patients (12.4%), intra-abdominal malignancy was present. The most frequent ischemic abdominal CT findings were bowel wall thickening (n = 120; 10.2%) and perivascular infiltration (n = 40; 3.4%). As for non-ischemic findings, colitis (n = 91; 7.7%) and small bowel inflammation (n = 73; 6.2%) constituted the most frequent disease processes. The duration of hospital stay was found to be higher in patients with abdominal CT findings than in patients without any positive findings (13.8 ± 13 vs. 10.4 ± 12.8 days, P < 0.001). The frequency of abdominal CT findings was significantly higher in patients who did not survive the infection than in patients who were discharged after recovery (41.7% vs. 27.4%, P < 0.001). Increased AA-CAS was found to be associated with a higher risk of ischemic conditions in abdominal CT examinations., Conclusion: Abdominal symptoms in patients with COVID-19 are usually associated with positive CT findings. The presence of ischemic findings on CT correlates with poor COVID-19 outcomes. A high AA-CAS is associated with abdominal ischemic findings in patients with COVID-19.

Aim: To report long-term oncological outcomes and organ preservation rate with a chemoradiotherapy-consolidation chemotherapy (CRT-CNCT) treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC)., Method: Retrospective analysis of prospectively maintained database was performed. Oncological outcomes of mid-low LARC patients (n=60) were analyzed after a follow-up of 63 (50-83) months. Patients with clinical complete response (cCR) were treated with the watch-and-wait (WW) protocol. Patients who could not achieve cCR were treated with total mesorectal excision (TME) or local excision (LE)., Results: Thirty-nine (65%) patients who achieved cCR were treated with the WW protocol. TME was performed in 15 (25%) patients and LE was performed in 6 (10%) patients. During the follow-up period, 10 (25.6%) patients in the WW group had regrowth (RG) and 3 (7.7%) had distant metastasis (DM). Five-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were 90.1% and 71.6%, respectively, in the WW group. Five-year OS and DFS were 94.9% (95% CI: 88-100%) and 80% (95% CI: 55.2-100%), respectively, in the RG group. For all patients (n=60), 5-year TME-free DFS was 57.3% (95% CI: 44.3-70.2%) and organ preservation-adapted DFS was 77.5% (95% CI: 66.4-88.4%). For the WW group (n=39), 5-year TME-free DFS was 77.5% (95% CI: 63.2-91.8%) and organ preservation-adapted DFS was 85.0% (95% CI: 72.3-97.8%)., Conclusion: CRT-CNCT provides cCR as high as 2/3 of LARC patients. Regrowths, developed during follow-up, can be successfully salvaged without causing oncological disadvantage if strict surveillance is performed., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

The aim of this study was to examine the structure of the spleen in the long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus) by histologically and the distribution of the catalase in the spleen by immunohistochemically. The tissue materials were taken from three healthy long-legged buzzards provided by permission of the General Directorate of Nature Protection and National Parks (Ankara, Turkey). The long-legged buzzard spleen is surrounded by smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue. In addition, trabecular structures are not found in the capsule. The separation of white and red pulp areas could not be precisely determined. Plasma cells were detected especially around the lymphoid follicles and lymphatic follicles and Schweigger-Seidel cells were formed by reticulum strands. Alcian blue positive reaction was determined in Schweigger-Seidel cells and endothelial cells of the long-legged buzzard spleen. The intense cytoplasmic catalase immunoreactivity was observed in the Schweigger-Seidel cells and nuclear in some red pulp cells of the long-legged buzzard spleen. Consequently, determination of the histological structure and catalase immunoreactivity of the spleen on the long-legged buzzard by this study could be support for the future researches., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

This study examined the effect of curcumin on T-helper (Th17) and T-regulatory (Treg) cells regarding the mRNA of cytokines/mediators in the gingiva. Thirty-five male albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Group 1: periodontitis (n = 9); Group 2: periodontitis with curcumin treatment (n = 8); Group 3: periodontally healthy with curcumin treatment (n = 10); and Group 4: periodontally healthy (n = 8). Curcumin was administered via oral gavage (30 mg/kg/day) for a total of 15 days. The gingival tissues were investigated regarding mRNA expressions of Th17/Treg cytokines with qRT-PCR. The distributional properties of the data were evaluated using the Anderson-Darling normality test. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were employed for multiple group comparisons. Partial least squares regression discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to evaluate the degree of contribution of each mRNA to the separation of treatment groups. When the periodontitis groups were compared, curcumin treatment resulted in lower IL-1β (Group 2 median: 0.002, Group 1 median: 0.12) and IL-6 (Group 2 median: 0.031, Group 1 median: 0.078) and higher IL-17 (Group 2 median: 1.07, Group 1 median: 0.583) relative mRNA expression in Group 2 than in Group 1 (p < 0.001). Group 3 also had higher IL-10 relative expression (median: 0.067) than Groups 1 and 4 (median: 0.028, 0.007, respectively. p < 0.001). These results indicate that curcumin might be a promising agent for the prevention and/or treatment of periodontal diseases due to its decreasing effect on IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA expression.

Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the characteristics of a single visible tumor (Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System [PI-RADS]≥3) on upgrading and adverse pathology at radical prostatectomy (RP) in biopsy naïve low risk prostate cancer (PCa) patients., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 64 biopsy naïve patients from 3 different referral centers between 2018 and 2020 with a PSA<10, cT1c disease, a single PI-RADS≥ 3 index lesion in multiparametric-MRI (mp-MRI), all bearing a GG 1 tumor sampled software fusion biopsy, who underwent RP. Preoperative clinical variables including the localization, number and tumor burden of positive cores for each PI-RADS category were related to upgrading and adverse pathology (GG>2 and/or pT3 and/or lymph node positive disease) at RP., Results: Overall 37 patients (57.8%) were upgraded with a significant difference of upgrading in PI-RADS3 (30.0%) versus PI-RADS 4 (67.6%) (P = .007) and PI-RADS 4-5 (70.5%) lesions (P = .002). Thirty-three of 37 GG1 tumors were upgraded to GG2, while 6 of these 33 (18.2%) had adverse pathology as well. Overall 9 patients (14.1%) had adverse pathology at RP all harboring PI-RADS4-5 lesions. The number of positive cores differed significantly between the upgraded and nonupgraded patients. Adverse pathology group had significantly higher tumor volume at RP., Conclusion: PI-RADS4-5 lesions are the independent predictors of upgrading and adverse pathology in low risk PCa with visible tumors. Upgrading and adverse pathology were closely related to the number of positive combined cores reflecting the role of tumor volume. Background: The prediction of pathological responses for locally advanced rectal cancer using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is a challenging task for radiologists, as residual tumor cells can be mistaken for fibrosis. Texture analysis of MR images has been proposed to understand the underlying pathology., Objective: This study aimed to assess the responses of lesions to CRT in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer using the first-order textural features of MRI T2-weighted imaging (T2-WI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps., Methods: Forty-four patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (median age: 57 years) who underwent MRI before and after CRT were enrolled in this retrospective study. The first-order textural parameters of tumors on T2-WI and ADC maps were extracted. The textural features of lesions in pathologic complete responders were compared to partial responders using Student's t- or Mann-Whitney U tests. A comparison of textural features before and after CRT for each group was performed using the Wilcoxon rank sum test. Receiver operating characteristic curves were calculated to detect the diagnostic performance of the ADC., Results: Of the 44 patients evaluated, 22 (50%) were placed in a partial response group and 50% were placed in a complete response group. The ADC changes of the complete responders were statistically more significant than those of the partial responders (P = 0.002). Pathologic total response was predicted with an ADC cut-off of 1310 x 10 -6 mm 2 /s, with a sensitivity of 72%, a specificity of 77%, and an accuracy of 78.1% after neoadjuvant CRT. The skewness of the T2-WI before and after neoadjuvant CRT showed a significant difference in the complete response group compared to the partial response group (P = 0.001 for complete responders vs. P = 0.482 for partial responders). Also, relative T2-WI signal intensity in the complete response group was statistically lower than that of the partial response group after neoadjuvant CRT (P = 0.006)., Conclusion: As a result of the conversion of tumor cells to fibrosis, the skewness of the T2-WI before and after neoadjuvant CRT was statistically different in the complete response group compared to the partial response group, and the complete response group showed statistically lower relative T2-WI signal intensity than the partial response group after neoadjuvant CRT. Introduction: The development of new surgical techniques and devices, as well as the improvements in neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy enabled intersphincteric resection (ISR), has reduced permanent colostomy usage. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term oncological and functional outcomes of patients who underwent partial ISR for rectal cancer located less than 5cm from the anal verge., Materials and Methods: A series of 106 consecutive patients with very low rectal cancer underwent curative partial ISR from January 2006 to September 2019 were retrospectively evaluated. One-hundred-three (97%) of 106 patients received neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy. Overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and local recurrence (LR) rates were calculated using Kaplan-Meier methods. The Wexner incontinence score and Kirwan classification were used to evaluate patients' functional results., Results: The median follow up was 60 months (range, 18-174). The estimated five-year overall and disease-free survival rates were 89% and 81.6%, respectively. Five-year local recurrence and distant metastasis rates were 6.6% and 10.4%, respectively. There was no in-hospital and 30-day mortality. The median Wexner score was 9 (range, 0-20) for 72 patients. Age (<65 years, p=0.027) and gender (male, p=0.019) had a positive effect on functional outcomes after surgery. One and five years colostomy-free survival rates were 96% and 89%, respectively., Conclusion: Intersphincteric resection techniques are feasible for patients with very low rectal cancer, providing good oncological and functional outcomes.

Backround/aim: In prostate cancer, extraprostatic extension (EPE) is an unfavorable prognostic factor, and the grade of EPE is correlated with the prognosis. This study aims to evaluate the utility of length of capsular contact (LCC ) in predicting the grade of EPE by correlating the measurements from MRI images and the measurements performed from radical prostatectomy specimens., Materials and Methods: MR images and specimens of 110 tumors are analyzed retrospectively. The specimens are used as reference to validate the presence of EPE and to measure the ground truth LCC. MR images are evaluated by two radiologists to identify the presence of EPE and to predict the LCC indirectly. Reliability, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the evaluations are analyzed in comparison with the findings obtained from the specimens., Results: In detection of EPE existence, the radiologists achieve almost the same performance (all AUCs = 0.73) with optimal cut-off values lead to moderate sensitivity and specificity pairs (For cut-off = 15.8 mm; Se = 0.69, Sp = 0.68 and for cut-off of 14.5 mm: Se = 0.77, Sp = 0.62). In distinguishing high-grade EPE from low-grade EPE, the radiologists accomplish very similar performances (AUCs = 0.73 and 0.72) Optimal thresholds of 20.0 mm and 18.5 mm for the readers retrospectively reveal medium sensitivity and specificity pairs (Se = 0.64, Sp = 0.67; Se = 0.64, Sp = 0.67)., Conclusion: Consistent LCC estimates can be obtained from MR images providing a beneficial metric for detecting the existence of EPE and for discriminating the grades of EPE., (This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)

Objectives: Despite advances in treatment, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains difficult to treat and the overall survival rate has only modestly improved over the past years. Therefore, there is a need to understand the molecular mechanism of HNSCC. Zinc finger protein 703 (ZNF703) is an oncogenic transcription factor, and ZNF703 gene expression is altered in many cancers as a result of chromosome 8p12 amplification. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression pattern of ZNF703 in HNSCC in association with CCND1 expression and Akt phosphorylation., Design: Prospective study., Setting: University hospital., Participants: One hundred and five patients with HNSCC., Methods: Fifty HNSCC tumour and non-cancerous tissue samples were investigated by qRT-PCR and Western blotting., Results: ZNF703 gene expression was increased in 22.9% of tumour tissues compared with its normal counterparts. Objectives: Gallium-68 (Ga-68) prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET) has been shown to be more accurate than multiparametric prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detection of primary prostate lesions. Using hybrid PET/MRI we aim to detect the correlation between SUV max and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in primary prostate lesions and to assess their prognostic value in detection of lymph node (LN) metastasis., Methods: Twenty-six patients, who were diagnosed as having prostate cancer with biopsy and underwent Ga-68 PSMA PET/MRI together with biparametric prostate MRI (bpMRI) were included. SUV max , SUV mean and ADC were recorded for index lesions drawing a region of interest (ROI) of 1 cm 2 around the pixel with the highest SUV max (ROI-1) and another ROI following borders of prostate tumor detected by bpMRI (ROI-2). Presence of LN metastasis was recorded according to PSMA PET/MRI, Results: SUV max was inversely correlated with ADC (ROI-1: p=0.010; ROI-2: p=0.017 for b=800). SUV max and SUV means were both higher in patients with LN metastasis and ADC was lower in patients with LN metastasis for ROI-1. SUV max cut-off value of 19.8 for ROI-1 and 20.9 for ROI-2 had sensitivity and specificity of 77.8% and 76.5%, respectively for detection of LN metastasis, whereas ADC (b=800) cut-off value of 0.92x10 -3 mm 2 /s had sensitivity and specificity of 87.5% and 76.5%, respectively. SUV max /ADC (b=800) ratio increased the sensitivity and specificity to 100% and 82.4%, respectively., Conclusion: SUV and ADC values are inversely correlated in primary prostate lesions and the combined use of both values increases the diagnostic accuracy of hybrid PET/MRI in the detection of primary prostate lesions.

Background: Anatomic and functional evaluation of the penis before treatment is very important in the choice of treatment in patients with Peyronie's disease (PD)., Aim: To compare 3 different methods for the evaluation of the penile deformity, including auto-photography, combined intracavernous injection stimulation test (CIS), and 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) during artificial penile erection in patients with PD., Methods: Pretreatment penile deformities of patients with PD were compared with those detected with auto-photography, using goniometer after intracavernosal vasoactive agent, and 3D CT correlations among these 3 methods were investigated., Main Outcome Measures: Assessments of penile curvature with auto-photography, CIS, and 3D CT., Results: The mean age of 36 patients who were included in the study was 58 ± 8.25 (36-72) years, and the mean time since the onset of the disease was 25 ± 24 months (2-144). Degrees of penile curvatures measured using auto-photography, CIS, and CT were determined as 24° (0°-80°), 40° (0°-90°), and 34° (0°-80°), respectively. When general correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the penile curvatures of all patients using 3 methods, a moderate correlation between auto-photography and both CIS (r = 0.72, P < .001) and 3D CT (r = 0.56, P < .001) was detected, whereas a strong correlation was noticed between CIS and 3D CT (r = 0.78, P < .001). When the correlation analysis between patients with and without ED was examined, a statistically significant decrease in the strength of correlation between CIS and auto-photography in patients with ED (0.629 vs 0.925, P < .05), however, was detected without any statistically significant difference in patients without ED (0.694 vs 0.813, P > .05)., Conclusion: The superiority of 3D CT over auto-photography and its strong correlation with CIS in most parameters have been demonstrated. However, it was found that CT did not give more information than the evaluation with CIS. Current limitations and cost increases limit the use of 3D CT in the assessment of PD. Objectives: To assess the most optimal multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging sequence (Mp-MRI) in determining pathological length of capsular contact (LCC) for the diagnosis of prostate cancer extraprostatic extension (EPE)., Methods: 105 patients with prostate cancer who underwent Mp-MRI of prostate prior to radical prostatectomy were enrolled in this retrospective study. LCC was determined from T2-weighted images (T2WI), Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) map, dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) separately by two blinded radiologists. The LCCs in patients with and without EPE were compared with Mann Whitney-U test. The relationship between pathological LCC and the LCC that was measured from each Mp-MRI sequences were calculated by using Spearman test. The ability of all individual Mp-MRI sequences in determining pathological LCC was calculated by drawing receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves. The diagnostic accuracy of LCC based on each MRI sequences for EPE diagnosis was also calculated with ROC curve analysis., Results: The patients with EPE had longer median LCC than patients without EPE for each Mp-MRI sequences and for both readers. In addition, the LCC showed a broader overlapping between patients with and without EPE on ADC map (reader-1, p = 0.01; reader-2, p = 0.01) when compared with T2WI (reader-1, p = 0.002; reader-2, p = 0.001) and DCE-MRI (reader-1, p = 0.001; reader-2, p = 0.001). LCC based on DCE-MRI showed the strongest correlation with pathological LCC. The area under the curve (AUC) based on LCC was higher when using the DCE-MRI (reader-1: 0.874, p = 0.030; reader-2: 0.862, p = 0.02) than when using T2WI and ADC map in predicting pathological LCC for both readers. While the LCC based on ADC map showed poor diagnostic accuracy, LCC based on T2WI and DCE-MRI had fair diagnostic accuracy for EPE diagnosis., Conclusion: The contact between prostate tumor and capsule seems to be a useful and objective parameter for evaluating the EPE of prostate cancer with Mp-MRI. More specifically, LCC based on DCE-MRI has highest correlation with pathological LCC and has better ability to predict pathological LCC when compared with other Mp-MRI sequences. However, the performance of LCC based on T2WI and DCE-MRI was similar for EPE diagnosis. Background: This study determined the anatomical and histological structure of the salpinx and ovary of the Anatolian wild goat (C. aegagrus aegagrus)., Materials and Methods: The salpinges and ovaries from four wild goats of similar ages were used. These goats were brought to the Kafkas University Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (Kars, Turkey) for various reasons such as traffic accidents or firearm injury, but either could not be saved or were euthanased., Results: The mean length of the ovary was 13.22 ± 1.27 mm, width was 8.46 ± 0.88 mm, thickness was 5.67 ± 0.79 mm, and weight was 0.59 ± 0.17 g. The mean length of the salpinx was 58.11 ± 14.02 mm, width was 0.80 ± 0.22 mm, thickness was 0.41 ± 0.01 mm, and weight was 0.30 ± 0.08 g. The salpinx consisted of three different regions (infundibulum, ampulla, and isthmus). These regions consisted of tunica mucosa, tunica muscularis, and tunica serosa. Prismatic epithelial cells were observed in the lamina epithelialis of the tunica mucosa in every region., Conclusions: The data resulting from this study regarding anatomical and histological structures of the salpinx and ovary in the genital system organs of Anatolian wild goat will support other studies seeking to improve reproductive efficiency and eliminate the danger of extinction of this species.

Purpose: We aimed to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of agent emission imaging - high mechanical index (AEI-High MI) mode ultrasonography (US) compared with gray-scale and color Doppler US, alone or in combination, for the diagnosis of urolithiasis with reference to unenhanced computed tomography (CT)., Methods: This prospective study included 72 consecutive patients (40 males, 32 females; mean age, 45.9±14.7 years) referred by the department of urology for acute or elective symptoms of urolithiasis and confirmed to have urinary calculi on unenhanced abdominal CT, between January 2015 and June 2015. Gray-scale, color Doppler, and AEI-High MI US were performed by two radiologists to determine the effectiveness of these methods in the diagnosis of urinary stones and to compare them with the reference modality., Results: A total of 189 calculi were detected on CT examination. Gray-scale US had a sensitivity of 66.1% and positive predictive value (PPV) of 88.7% for detecting calculi, while twinkling artifact of color Doppler had a sensitivity of 70.4% and PPV of 94.3%. The scintillation artifact of AEI-High MI mode had a sensitivity of 75.1% and PPV of 95.9%. When all ultrasound-based modalities were combined, the sensitivity and PPV rose to 83.1% and 88.2%, respectively. When calculi were grouped according to their size ( < 5 mm, 5-10 mm, > 10 mm), AEI-High MI mode had a higher sensitivity (60%) compared with gray-scale (32.5%) and color Doppler (41.3%) for calculi < 5 mm., Conclusion: AEI-High MI mode had a higher sensitivity compared with gray-scale and color Doppler for the detection of calculi smaller than 5 mm, but it did not make a significant contribution to detection of larger calculi. The combined use of gray-scale US with AEI-High MI mode could increase the detection rate of calculi smaller than 5 mm and provide a method for verification of suspected calculi on gray-scale US.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare contrast-enhanced computed tomography with diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of patients with acute biliary pancreatitis., Material and Methods: Fifty-three patients diagnosed with acute biliary pancreatitis, between February 2012 and July 2015, were evaluated using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography to explain the elevation of cholestasis enzymes and bilirubin levels at "stanbul University. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging was applied within 8 h following first evaluation. Demographic data, severity of pancreatitis, pancreatic apparent diffusion coefficient, and computed tomography severity index were compared. The significance of the results was evaluated using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 21.0 program., Results: Median age was 53.39 (22-90) years in these 53 patients (26 were males and 27 were females). The mean Ranson criterion was 0.96 (0-4) and mean hospitalization duration was 16.02 (3-100) days. Twenty-eight patients were evaluated to have mild acute pancreatitis, whereas 16 were moderately severe and nine were severe based on the Revised Atlanta Classification. Mild pancreatitis score was 0.89, moderately severe pancreatitis score was 3.50, and severe pancreatitis score was 5.78 using the Balthazar score. Elevated C-reactive protein levels were not correlated with necrosis and the clinical severity score (p>0.05). There was no significant difference among the Balthazar score, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography-apparent diffusion coefficient score, and Revised Atlanta score in the evaluation of the severity of pancreatitis when the two techniques were compared. A statistically insignificant difference was found between the Balthazar score and magnetic resonance imaging results of clinically confirmed necrosis and non-necrosis patients., Conclusion: It can be concluded that diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging might be better than contrast-enhanced computed tomography in the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis as it avoids radiation exposure as well as the development of renal failure and pancreatitis aggravation due to the use of contrast for computed tomography. Background: Curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and is reported to have many biologic activities. The current study examines effect of curcumin on: 1) systemic T helper 17 (Th17) cell response; 2) gingival expressions of interleukin (IL)-17 and retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor (ROR) γt; and 3) alveolar bone loss (ABL) in experimental periodontitis., Methods: Thirty-eight male albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups: 1) group 1 = periodontitis; 2) group 2 = periodontitis with curcumin treatment; 3) group 3 = periodontally healthy with curcumin treatment; and 4) group 4 = periodontally healthy. Curcumin was administered via oral gavage (30 mg/kg/d) for 15 days. After sacrifice via exsanguination, the following serum levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay: 1) IL-1β; 2) IL-6; 3) IL-17A; 4) IL-23; and 5) transforming growth factor- β. Morphometric evaluation of ABL was conducted and expression levels of IL-17 and RORγt in gingival tissues were evaluated immunohistochemically., Results: Group 2 had significantly lower ABL than group 1 (P <0.0125). Highest expression levels of IL-17 and RORγt were observed in group 1 and were significantly higher than those in all other groups (P <0.0125). The only serum biochemical parameter significantly different among groups was level of IL-23 (P <0.05). Serum IL-23 levels were higher in groups 1 and 2 than groups 3 and 4 (P <0.0125); however, they were not significantly different for groups 1 and 2 (P >0.0125)., Conclusion: Curcumin seems to be a promising host modulatory agent in periodontal disease pathogenesis regarding IL-17/IL-23 axis, with a decreasing effect on ABL and gingival expressions of IL-17 and RORγt.

Aim: This study was performed with the objective to determine the levels of some physical hazards in primary schools., Material and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional field survey. In this study which was conducted in 31 primary schools selected by appropriate sampling from the district of Keçiören of the province of Ankara, measurements related with temperature, light, electromagnetic field (EMF) and noise levels were done at hundreds of points. Approval was obtained from Gülhane Military Medical Faculty Ethics Committee (2007/97)., Results: Only 47.1% of the classes had a temperature value within the recommended limits (20-21°C). It was found that the illumination levels in 96.8% of the schools were above the standard values. However, the levels of illumination were found to be statistically significantly decreased towards the door and the back line (p<0.05). It was found that electromagnetic field levels were significantly higher in the schools who had a source of electromagnetic field nearby compared to the schools who did not have such a source nearby (p<0.001). It was found that the electromagnetic field levels in computer classes were statistically significantly higher compared to the other classes (p<0.001). Noise levels were found to be statistically significantly higher in classes which had 35 and more students (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in schools near intensive vehicle traffic in terms of noise levels (62.8±5.0 (n=72), 62.0±6.4 (n=79), respectively, p>0.05)., Conclusions: It was found that primary schools in the region of Keçiören had aspects which had to be improved in terms of building age, building location, brightness, electromagnetic field and noise levels. School health programs directed to improve negative enviromental factors should be developed.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between marital violence and distress level among women with a diagnosis of infertility., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 139 married women diagnosed as primary infertile who applied to an in vitro fertilization (IVF) center in Turkey, between September and December 2009. A descriptive information questionnaire developed by the researcher was used for data collection. In addition, an infertility distress scale (IDS) for determining the severity effect of infertility and the scale for marital violence against women (SDVW) for determining level of marital violence against the women were used., Results: The total IDS score of the study sample was 37.76 ± 10.53. There was no significant relationship between the age and education level of the women and the total IDS score. The total IDS score was higher in women who did not work and those being treated for infertility for more than three years. The total SDVW score of the study sample was 67.0 ± 8.26. The total SDVW score was higher in women who had been trying to have a child for more than six years and had received infertility treatment for longer than three years. The employment status of the women and physical, emotional, and sexual violence scores had a statistically significant relationship with the IDS scores. The emotional violence score was found to have the highest significance among the variables affecting total IDS score., Conclusion: Marital violence is a factor increasing the distress of infertile women. Healthcare staff serving infertile couples should consider the possibility of domestic violence against women as a factor affecting the psychological infertility distress level.
