Abstract

Low background experiments need active muon veto detectors to shield them from cosmic muons. Plastic scintillator panels with WLS fiber and multi-pixel Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes readout are widely used in such experiments due to their compactness and robustness. In this paper, results from the study of the basic MRS APD parameters, such as breakdown voltages, quenching resistors, internal gain and dark count rates are presented, as well as temperature dependencies of some of these parameters. In a small fraction of the MRS APDs, some strange dips in the I–V curves just preceding the breakdown voltage point have been observed.

Abstract

A system for calibrating the external strings located at a distance of ∼100 m from the core of the NT-200+ deep-water neutrino telescope on Lake Baikal is described. The calibration system is composed of nanosecond light pulsers based on ultrabright blue LEDs. It is shown that the accuracy in synchronizing the external strings with the central part of the telescope, attained using this system, is 1 ns or better.

Abstract

Results of studying the optical properties of plastic fiber-optic cables widely used in astroparticle physics experiments are presented. The absorption of nanosecond light pulses and light dispersion are studied. The influence of mechanical bends of the cables and photon’s launch angles on the transmission time and attenuation of light signals in these cables are also studied.

Abstract

The light yield in CaMoO4 scintillating crystals irradiated with α particles and γ rays from 241Am and 137Cs radioactive isotopes, respectively, have been measured. It is shown that the light yield in this crystal for γ rays, measured in the wavelength range of 400–700 nm at room temperature (22°C), is ∼3000 photons/MeV, and the ratio α/β is ∼0.25.

Abstract

The kinetics of scintillation process in Czochralski-grown CaMoO4 crystals excited by α particles and γ rays from 238Pu and 137Cs radioactive isotopes, respectively, is investigated. Kinetics of scintillations is shown to be complex and multicomponent in character. Fast and slow scintillation components are observed, and their relative contributions to the total light yield in the scintillator are determined. The possibility is demonstrated of discriminating between scintillator signals due to α particles and γ rays.

Abstract

A multipurpose deep-water experimental string has been developed for testing new promising techniques and performing methodical tasks of deep-water muon and neutrino detection in Lake Baikal. The design of the setup is described, and some experimental results obtained with the pilot sample of the string under field conditions on Lake Baikal are presented.

Abstract

Highly sensitive micropixel avalanche photodiodes with a metal-resistor-semiconductor structure (MRS APDs) operating in the restricted Geiger discharge mode and scintillation detectors with wavelength-shifting optical fibers developed for the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment have been investigated. Dependencies of basic MRS APD parameters on the bias voltage, photon wavelength, and temperature have been measured. Characteristics of the scintillation detectors with wavelength-shifting optical fibers and avalanche photodiodes are described.

Abstract

The 10 Mton scale Neutrino telescope NT 200 + is operating in Lake Baikal since April, 2005. It's main physics goal is the detection of high energy neutrino cascades in the 10 2 – 10 5 TeV energy range. The NT 200 + sensitivity to astrophysical diffuse neutrinos is four times that of it's predecessor NT200 the telescope that has been operating since 1998, yielding a variety of physics results. A km-scale (Gigaton Volume) Neutrino telescope in Lake Baikal is planned, the R&D phase has started in 2006. We give the basic layout of this Baikal km3-detector, which will be made of building blocks similar to NT 200 + .

Abstract

We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment and present results of a search for upward-going atmospheric neutrinos and magnetic monopoles obtained with the detector NT200. The results of a search for very high energy neutrinos are presented and an upper limit on the extraterrestrial diffuse neutrino flux is obtained. We describe the strategy of upgrading the NT200 to NT200+ and creating a detector on the Gigaton scale at Lake Baikal. The first results obtained with the new NT200+ detector as a basic cell of a future Gigaton detector are presented.

Abstract

The hydroacoustic coordinate-measuring system of the NT-200 Baikal neutrino telescope is described. It is a ranging long-base hydroacoustic system constantly operating in an automated or interactive mode and capable of measuring the coordinates of the detecting modules of the NT-200 to within 20 cm. Special attention is given to the justification of the estimate of the coordinate measurement errors. As an illustration, some results of measuring the coordinates of the elements of the NT-200 and the hydrophysical characteristics of lake Baikal are presented.

Abstract

In this short note we present results of background measurements carried out with polystyrene based cast plastic 12.0×12.0×3.0 cm3 size scintillator counter with a wavelength shifting fibre and a multi-pixel Geiger mode avalanche photodiode readout in the Baksan underground laboratory at a depth of 200 metres of water equivalent. The total counting rate of the scintillator counter measured at this depth and at a threshold corresponding to ∼0.37 of a minimum ionizing particle is approximately 1.3 Hz.

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array, G erda , is a new experiment designed to examine the neutrinoless double beta decay 0 ν β β of 76 Ge which has a lifetime of at least 10 26 years and a single energy deposition of 2039 keV. To reach the goal of 10 - 3 background events/( keV kg y ), several background reduction techniques like anti-coincidence and pulse shape analysis will be used. Cosmic muons can produce background in form of particles and radioactivity. To reject them, two independent detector systems will be integrated in G erda . One of these is a Cherenkov muon veto detector, that uses the water tank around the cryostat in which the crystals will be operated. It is equipped with 66 photomultipliers (PMTs) with 8 in. diameter. The PMT distribution was found via extensive Monte Carlo studies to reach the highest efficiencies for dangerous muons (these are muons that cause an energy deposition of around 2 MeV in the germanium detectors), even though the PMTs cover less than 0.1% of the water tank surface. High efficiencies depend strongly on the amount of detected photons. For this, as many surfaces as possible will be covered with ‘VM2000’, a highly reflective foil from 3 M. This foil has a high reflectivity in a wide range of wavelength and it also shifts photons from the UV into the optical range. It, more or less, doubles the amount of detectable photons, because the photomultipliers used, have an detection maximum between 370 and 400 nm. Thus, a detection efficiency of 98% should be easily achieved.

Abstract

The new EAS Cherenkov array TUNKA-133, with about 1 km**2 sensitive area, is being installed in the Tunka Valley. The investigated energy range is 10**15-10**18 eV. It will consist of 133 optical detectors based on EMI9350 PMTs. Optical detectors are grouped into 19 clusters with 7 detectors each. The detectors are connected to the cluster box with RG-58 cables. Every PMT signal is digitized in the cluster box with 200 MHz FADC. The cluster boxes are connected to the data acquisition center with a 1 Gb/s optical link. Abstract

We review the status of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope, which has recently been upgraded to the 5 Mton detector NT200+. We present results on searches for upward going atmospheric neutrinos and relativistic magnetic monopoles, obtained from 1998-2002 with the predecessor detector NT200. A search for very high energy neutrinos yields an upper limit on the extraterrestrial diffuse neutrino flux for 20 TeV < E < 50 PeV. We describe the strategy of upgrading NT200 to NT200+ and creating a detector on the Gigaton (km3) scale at lake Baikal. R&D activities on that next stage detector have been started.

We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Experiment. On April 9th, 2005 the 10 Mton scale detector NT200+ was put into operation in Lake Baikal. We describe the configuration and physics potential of this detector. Selected results obtained during 1998-2002 with the neutrino telescope NT200 are presented.

Abstract

We review the ongoing work of the Baikal Collaboration on acoustic detection of super high energy neutrinos. Some results of the study of high frequency acoustic noise in Lake Baikal are presented. A lot of short impulses with different amplitudes and shapes were detected, which should be considered as a background for acoustic neutrino detection. However, most of the short impulses appear to be due to noise sound waves interference and can be eliminated by a correlation analysis. Only a few detected bipolar impulses probably were produced by quasi local sources.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos with the Baikal underwater Cherenkov detector NT200, based on data taken in 1998 - 2002. Upper limits on the diffuse fluxes of $\nu_e+\nu_{\mu}+\nu_{\tau}$, predicted by several models of AGN-like neutrino sources, are derived. Abstract

The GERDA experiment searches for neutrinoless double beta decay ( 0 ν β β ). To achieve a sensitivity of 10 - 3 counts / ( keV kg y ) or better within a specific region of interest (ROI), a good background identification is needed. Therefore GERDA is located in the LNGS (Laboratori Nationali del Gran Sasso) underground facility. In addition to the good rejection of cosmic muons due to the surrounding bedrocks, a dual muon veto system has to be used. For calibration and monitoring of the muon veto, two separate systems have been developed.

Abstract

We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Project and present results of a search for upward going atmospheric neutrinos, WIMPs and magnetic monopoles obtained with the detector NT-200. Also, the results of a search for very high energy neutrinos are presented. An upper limit on the v e+v μ+v T neutrino diffuse flux of E 2 · F(E) < 1.3 · 10 -6 cm-2 s-1 sr-1 GeV within a neutrino energy range 104 ÷ 107 GeV is obtained, assuming an E -2 behaviour of the neutrino spectrum and flavor ratio v e+v μ+v T = 1: 1: 1- We describe the moderate upgrade of NT-200 planned for the next years and discuss a possible detector on the Gigaton scale.
