4. Use of radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for evaluation of navicular syndrome in the horse

Abstract

Radiographic evaluation of navicular syndrome is problematic because of its inconsistent correlation with clinical signs. Scintigraphy often yields false positive and false negative results and diagnostic ultrasound is of limited value. Therefore, we assessed the use of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in a horse with clinical and radiographic signs of navicular syndrome. Cadaver specimens were examined with spiral computed tomographic and high-field magnetic resonance scanners and images were correlated with pathologic findings. Radiographic changes consisted of bony remodeling, which included altered synovial fossae, increased medullary opacity, cyst formation and shape change. These osseous changes were more striking and more numerous on computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images. They were most clearly defined with computed tomography. Many osseous changes seen with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were not radiographically evident. Histologically confirmed soft tissue alterations of the deep digital flexor tendon, impar ligament and marrow were identified with magnetic resonance imaging, but not with conventional radiography. Because of their multiplanar capability and tomographic nature, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging surpass conventional radiography for navicular imaging, facilitating earlier, more accurate diagnosis. Current advances in imaging technology should make these imaging modalities available to equine practitioners in the future.

Abstract

A study was made of eight dogs which had malabsorption associated with disease of the small intestine. Functional studies revealed a range of abnormalities including reduced absorption of fat and xylose, lowered disaccharidase levels in the mucosa of the small intestine, hypoalbuminemia, and protein-losing enteropathy. The morphologic abnormalities included enteritis, lymphangiectasia, and lymphosarcoma. Villous atrophy was sometimes the sole abnormality and sometimes occurred in combination with other intestinal lesions.

Abstract

The first Congress of the World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) held in Europe took place this past April at Essen, West Germany. Conducted during Equitana '89, the Equestrian Sports World Fair and in conjunction with the 8th Tagung Uber Pferd Krankheiten (8th Equine Forum of West Germany), this educational forum enjoyed overwhelming success with over 600 equine veterinarians attending WEVA's Congress on the subject of Equine Sports Medicine on April 13th followed by presentations on Alternative Medicine; Partnership or Rivalry on April 14th and 15th at the Equine Forum. More than 20 countries were represented throughout the meeting with speakers from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, United States and West Germany, presenting papers over the 3 days. The wealth of information generated by such distinguished international veterinarians was evident from the considerable and lively discussions which followed many of the papers. The great respect that the equine industry has for veterinary medicine and its practitioners w as highly evident throughout Equitana. Professional meetings held in conjunction with other equine events not only raise the awareness and profile of the profession but also provide an excellent outlet for disseminating current information to the industry as well as to veterinarians. The study of veterinary medicine most certainly serves as a common bond among equine veterinarians world wide. The exchange of ideas and information, the spirited challenge of research and clinical data helps to weld lasting friendships and ensure future communications to the benefit of veterinarians and the horse industry alike. The purposes of the World Equine Veterinary Association as previously stated: (1) to unify the equine veterinary profession throughout the world by providing a common forum for national and international equine veterinary organizations, (2) to hold and promote national and international meetings, concerning all aspects of the health, breeding and welfare of the horse, (3) to provide a central body for the co-ordination and exchange of information as it relates to the health of the horse, are strongly upheld by intemational congresses such as these. The future role of WEVA will continue to include the hosting of these forums including the Equine Section of the World Veterinary Congress in Rio in 1991. WEVA will also strive to disseminate current information to equine veterinarians who, due to circumstance, are not able to attend educational meetings on a regular basis. The publication of these proceedings in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science will provide access to these scientific presentations to a greater number of practitioners throughout the world.
