The clinical use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in horses usually involves the transfer of embryos into recipient mares, resulting in substantial cost increases. This is essential when subfertile mares are oocyte donors; but some donors are fertile, with ICSI compensating for limited or poor-quality spermatozoa. Fertile oocyte donors could carry pregnancies, eliminating the need for a recipient. We assessed the potential of using oocyte donors as recipients for their own ICSI-produced embryos during the same cycle. Donors in oestrus and with large dominant follicles were administered ovulation-inducing compounds to cause follicle and oocyte maturation. Maturing oocytes were collected, cultured and fertilised using ICSI. At 6 or 7 days after ICSI, developing blastocysts were transferred into respective donors’ uteri, and pregnancy rates were determined. Twenty follicles were aspirated from nine mares and 12 oocytes were collected. After ICSI, 10 of the 12 oocytes (83%) cleaved, and eight (67% of injected oocytes) developed into blastocysts for transfer. Five pregnancies resulted from the eight transferred embryos (pregnancy rate 62% per embryo and 42% per sperm-injected oocyte). Following this synchronisation regime, ICSI-produced embryos can be transferred into oocyte donors’ uteri during the same cycle, allowing donors to carry pregnancies after assisted fertilisation.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da ivermectina (IVM), em combinação com o verapamil (VRP), em veículo oleoso ou à base de água, contra um isolado de campo de H. contortus resistente por meio de teste de migração de larvas e infecção experimental em ovinos. No teste in vitro, observou-se reversão fenotípica da resistência de Haemonchus contortus à ivermectina com alta concentração de VRP, aumentando a eficácia da IVM de 53,1% para 94,3. No teste in vivo, IVM + VRP demonstrou 36,02% de eficácia em relação a 7,75% de IVM sozinha. O veículo da formulação não apresentou influência na eficácia. Estes são os primeiros resultados que demonstram o efeito da VRP como reversor parcial do fenótipo da resistência de IVM-fenótipo em um isolado de campo de H. contortus resistente, inoculado experimentalmente em ovinos. Recent advances in anthelmintic resistant phenotype reversion by Pgp modulating drugs in ruminant nematodes indicate that this can be a useful tool to helminth control. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin (IVM) in combination with verapamil (VRP), in oil or water-based vehicle, against an IVM-resistant field isolate of Haemonchus contortus through a larval migration assay and experimental infection trial. In the in vitro assay was observed a phenotypic reversion of H. contortus resistance to ivermectin at a high concentration of VRP, increasing IVM efficacy from 53.1% to 94.3. In the in vivo trial, IVM + VRP demonstrated 36.02% efficacy compared to the 7.75% of IVM alone. The vehicle formulation showed no influence in efficacy. These are the first results demonstrating the effect of VRP as a partial IVM-resistance phenotype reverser in a field isolate of IVM-resistant H. contortus experimentally inoculated in sheep. The single gene encoding actin (Act) in the cellulolytic filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei (Tr) has been isolated and characterized. The gene contains five introns located in identical positions when compared to the putative ancestral actin genes (act) present in Thermomyces lanuginosus and Aspergillus nidulans. The 5' untranslated region (UTR) of the gene contains a TATA-like sequence (TAATA), a C + T-rich region and a potential CCAAT motif. This region was used as a homologous promoter to direct expression of hygromycin-B-resistance-encoding gene as a dominant-selectable Tr marker.

A 3-cm painless epigastric mass was found on examination in 53-year-old man with abdominal pain and vomiting for the past 6 months. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed asymmetric thickening of the distal esophagus, and upper endoscopy showed a neoplastic lesion in the distal esophagus (histological examination of the biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma). In the duodenum, we found a subepithelial lesion in the papilla, measuring about 2cm, which was covered by normal mucosa, and bile drainage was also normal. Endoscopic biopsies did not reveal neoplastic cells (●" Fig.1). Endoscopic ultrasound showed a hypoechoic heterogeneous lesion in the cardia, infiltrating the serosa, accompanied by perilesional hypoechoic, round, well-defined nodes smaller than 1cm in size. In the duodenal papilla, we found a hypoechoic homogeneous lesion restricted to the deep mucosa, measuring 25×15mm, with no invasion of the biliary and pancreatic ducts (●" Fig.2). The patient was referred for surgical resection of the esophageal tumor, duodenotomy and papillary tumor excision, and biliary drainage. Pathological specimens showed T3N2 esophagogastric adenocarcinoma and gangliocytic paraganglioma of the duodenal papilla (●" Fig.3), with neoplastic cells positive for chromogranin (●" Fig.4a), synaptophysin (●" Fig.4b), and S100 protein, and with a low mitotic index and Ki67

Neutron-neutron interactions have been observed at the CERN ISR with deutron colliding beams. The double - diffraction dissociation process →(p π p − )( pπ − ) has been measured with the Split Field Magnet at √ s = 26 GeV detecting all final state particles, including the two spectator protons. Mass and t distributions are presented and compared with corresponding spectra observed in single neutron diffraction in the same energy range with supporting evidence for factorization. The cross-section of the process is 11.5±2.8 μ b and can be directly related to the corresponding value for double diffraction dissociation of protons in the same energy range.

We have measured the charge-exchange reaction pp → (p π + ) (p π − ) at s = 23, 31, 45, 53, and 63 GeV at the ISR, using the Split Field Magnet detector. The data are characterized by a sharp forward peak of width 0.02 (GeV/ c ) 2 , followed by a much gentler slope at higher | t |; sizeable Δ ++ , Δ 0 , and N 0 production is observed in the (Nπ) mass spectra. Two different components are present in the data following power-law energy dependence of the type p lab − n with n 1 = −1.63 ± 0.13 and n 2 = −0.96 ± 0.07, respectively, indicating the onset of mechanisms in competition with pion exchange at ISR energies.

We examined the effects of inhibition of mitochondrial functions on the expression of two nuclear genes encoding the extracellular cellobiohydrolase I (cbh1) and endoglucanase I (egl1) of the cellulase system of the filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei. The cbh1 and egl1 transcripts are repressed at a low oxygen tension, and by glucose at a concentration known to repress mitochondrial respiration. The transcripts are also down-regulated by chemical agents known to dissipate the proton electrochemical gradient of the inner mitochondrial membrane and blocking of the electron-transport chain, such as DNP and KCN, respectively. These results suggest that expression of those transcripts is influenced by the physiological state of the mitochondria. In addition, heterologous gene fusion shows that the sensitivity of the expression of those transcripts to the functional state of the mitochondria is transcriptionally controlled through the 5'-flanking DNA sequence of those genes.

Five large multiwire proportional chambers, ranging in size from 1.3 × 0.8 m2 to 2.6 × 1.3 m2, were built for magnetic spectrometer in use at the Stanford SPEAR I e+ e− storage ring. We discuss the design and construction problems raised by the large size of the chambers, and described the solutions that were adopted. Results of efficiency and uniformity tests are also given.

We present the results of a systematic analysis of charge-exchange double dissociation in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The data, obtained with the Split-Field Magnet detector, cover the entire ISR energy range between s = 23 GeV and s = 63 GeV at five standard energies. Double resonance production is observed in the Δ++Δ0 and Δ++N0(1688) final states. The mass spectra of the pπ− system show more pronounced resonant signals in the backward Jackson hemisphere. A detailed analysis of differential cross sections shows a forward peak typical of absorbed pion exchange decreasing as s−1.81±0.06, followed by a much gentler exponential behaviour associated with a trajectory typical of ϱ-A2 exchange. The high-energy transition to this regime is also indicated by a dramatic change in the s-dependence of total cross sections as compared with low-energy data. Power-law fits in the form sn for all three (pπ+)(pπ−), Δ++Δ0, and Δ++N0(1688) channels reach an s−1 behaviour with exponents n = −1.03 ± 0.01, −0.94 ± 0.01, and n = −1.04 ± 0.01, respectively.

The inclusive charged-hadron momentum spectra from the psi and psi' decays produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at SPEAR are presented. The data were obtained with a small solid-angle, single-arm magnetic spectrometer with good particle-identification abilities centered at 90 degrees with respect to the beams. The particle-separated invariant cross sections are compared with data from e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at ..sqrt..s-bar = 4.8 and 7.3 GeV, obtained with the same spectrometer, in order to observe the difference between hadron production at the resonances and in the continuum.

Neutron diffraction dissociation has been measured at the ISR in proton-neutron interactions at 37 GeV c.m. energy. The data were taken with the Split Field Magnet detector, during a short deuteron storage test run with colliding p-d beams. Differential mass and momentum transfer distributions are reported; the value of the total cross-section shows a weak s-dependence when compared to lower energy data.

We report on inclusive hadron production in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at < s < or = = 53 GeV/sup 2/, using a small solid-angle magnetic spectrometer with good particle identification at 90/sup 0/ to the beams at SPEAR II. The cross sections of ..pi../sup + -/ and K/sup + -/ when compared with data at s = 23 GeV/sup 2/ exhibit scaling in (s/..beta..) dsigma/dx with x = 2E/s/sup 1/2/. The invariant cross section depends on the momentum as p/sup -4/.

A dual NIM standard gate generator is described with retriggerable one-shot-operation, delayed output and asynchronous blanking capability. The output width can be varied over more than eight decades and can be extended by an additional external input.

Following reports of anomalous dielectron prediction in the mass region near 6 GeV at 400 GeV, we searched for an enhancement in the reaction e/sup +/e/sup -/ hadrons and e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/ at SPEAR in the center-of-mass energy range 5.67--6.43 GeV. The leptonic and hadronic cross sections show no statistically significant peaks. In this mass range, 95% confidence level upper limits for the decay width into electron pairs are less than 200 eV for a narrow resonance which decays predominantly either into hadrons or into electron pairs.

A NIM-standard 110 MHz prescaler with frequency division programmable from 1 to 15 is described. Techniques to obtain non-integer division ratios with two prescalers are discussed.

We present results on charged multiplicity ${n}_{\mathrm{ch}}=2$ and ${n}_{\mathrm{ch}}g2$ muon events produced in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collisions with $〈{s}^{\frac{1}{2}}〉=7.3$ GeV at 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to the beams. The background-subtracted inclusive cross section for the ${n}_{\mathrm{ch}}=2$ events is 10.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}5.4 pb/sr, in agreement with the expected contribution from the heavy lepton $\ensuremath{\tau}$. The cross section for the ${n}_{\mathrm{ch}}g2$ events is 19.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6.5 pb/sr whereas we expect only 2.9 pb/sr from the $\ensuremath{\tau}$, indicating that we may be seeing the weak decays of charmed mesons.

We report on experimental results on proton-deuteron elastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 63 GeV . The data were obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The t -dependence of the elastic differential cross section, measured up to − t = 2.0 GeV 2 , is compared with the prediction of an extended Glauber theory including contributions from inelastic intermediate states. Discrepancies of up to 30% with the basic theory are observed in the interference region. The inelastic contributions are essential for the detailed description of the data both in the single- and double-scattering regions.

Experimental results on deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of square root s=53 GeV are reported. The data were obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN intersecting Storage Rings. The t-dependence of the elastic cross section is measured up to -t=1.5 GeV/sup 2/. A narrow interference minimum is observed in the differential cross section at -t=0.18 GeV /sup 2/. The inclusion of inelastic intermediate states in the multiple scattering Glauber theory is essential in the description of the data over the entire t-range where discrepancies of up to 25% are observed with the basic theory. Results on exclusive double diffraction dissociation in (N π ) and (N ππ ) final states are reported for neutron-neutron interactions at √ s = 26.4 GeV and for the proton-neutron interactions at √ s = 37.2 GeV. The data have been obtained at the CERN intersecting storage rings using split field magnet detector with proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron colliding beams. Factorization is shown to be verified to a very high degree in both mass- and t -differential cross-sections. The data confirm the previously observed rise in the proton-proton double diffractive cross-section as a function of c.m. energy.

We report results on a new measurement of the double diffractive reaction pp → (p π + π − ) (p π + π − ) at the ISR obtained with the Split Field Magnet detector. Experimental procedures and data analysis are discussed in detail. The cross section measured at the five standard ISR energies exhibits an increase of (55 ± 7)% in the s -range from 549 to 3892 GeV 2 .

We present results from a study of high-momentum inclusive hadron production in electron-positron interactions at $\sqrt{s}=3.8 \mathrm{and} 4.8$ GeV. Comparison of the momentum spectra at these energies shows no scaling violation in the region $x(=\frac{E}{{E}_{\mathrm{beam}}})g0.7$. At $\sqrt{s}=4.8$ GeV the $\frac{K}{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ ratio for hadrons with momenta g1.1 GeV/c is 0.27\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08, and the average number of charged hadrons is 3.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3 for those events which have at least one charged hadron with momentum greater than 1.1 GeV/c.

detected with the split-field magnet (SFM) facil i ty at the CERN intersecting storage rings at e.m.s, energies between 23 and 53 GeV. The apparatus, tr igger and procedure of analysis are described in greater detai l in another paper (1). The experiment is a imed at s tudying double-diffraction dissociation in reaction (1). In this paper we analyse the propert ies of the mass spectra of the two (p7:+7: -) systems and we present evidence for double ~ * production. The phase-space region populated by our events and the kinematical selections applied identify two (pT:+~:-) systems separated by a large rap id i ty gap and produoed at small values of the four-momentum transfer. In addition, the energy dependence of the to ta l cross-section for reaction (1) and the propert ies of the differential crosssections as measured in this experiment (1.3) s trongly support the diffractive nature of the double-dissociation events of our sample.

Inclusive gamma-ray experiments were carried out in a e(+)e(-) colliding-beam apparatus with NaI(Tl) arrays as detectors. The inclusive gamma-ray spectra, after cosmic-ray background subtraction, are shown as histograms for the decays of the psi(3095) and psi-prime(3684). The psi spectrum has no significant narrow structure, while the psi-prime spectrum shows at least four peaks. Three major radiative decays of the psi-prime(3684) are found, and their respective branching fractions are computed.

We describe an integrated logic unit for fast logic applications. The module is dc-coupled and performs the logic OR/AND functions with ample fanout. Four independent functional blocks can be programmed in different input-output multiplicity levels.

We describe a system of small multiwire proportional chambers having electrically separated adjacent gaps. The chambers can be stacked in any number and combination of planes.

I would like to present some of the preliminary results of an experiment studying e+-e− interactions at the SPEAR colliding beam facility at SLAC. This experiment was predominately a single arm magnetic spectrometer for measuring e+-e− inclusive cross sections.

The system of multiplane drift chambers for the forward-backward toroidal spectrometers of the UA2 experiment at the SPS pp collider is described. Details about mechanical design and construction techniques are given. Results on the performance of the chambers are reported.

Adverse reactions to general anaesthetics are quite rare, but may be very severe and even lethal. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is frequently based on medical history and few laboratory tests are reliable. A clinical case is presented: a patient, 75 years of age, was a candidate for urgent coronary artery bypass graft surgery due to the results of the coronary angiogram (severe stenosis of the main stem). The patient reported cardiac arrest in both operations with general anaesthesia, but there was a lack of clinical documentation. Thus, sulfidoleukotriene assay (CAST-ELISA, Bühlmann Laboratories) was used to determine the tolerability of general anesthetics in a single patient. The results of this in vitro test was useful in discriminating and excluding the administration of some widely-used standard anaesthetic agents.
