The Colorado checkered whiptail (Aspidoscelis neotesselatus) is a parthenogenetic lizard that is listed as a “species of special concern” in the state of Colorado. A. neotesselatus occupies a small range that includes the US Army Fort Carson Military Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The species is exposed to a variety of military disturbances, including aircraft flyover noise. We sampled 82 females during the 2021 reproductive season to assess whether scheduled flyovers would impact the behavior, stress, and metabolism of A. neotesselatus, while controlling for size and reproductive stage differences. We measured corticosterone (CORT) as a marker of anthropogenically induced stress during flyovers compared to a control. We further tested for the downstream effects of flyovers on plasma glucose (free energy available to tissues), elevated metabolism with oxidative stress (ROMs), and ketone bodies (alternative cerebral energy substrates to glucose). When disturbed by flyovers, these lizards spent less time moving but more time eating. Aircraft noise also increased CORT when controlling for clutch size, indicating a stress response driven by flyovers, as well as an independent effect of reproductive investment on CORT. CORT did not affect plasma glucose. Flyovers led to a marginally decrease in circulating ROMs, with gravid females experiencing lower plasma ROMs than non-gravid females, but that later effect was independent of flyovers. Flyovers significantly increased ketone bodies, with smaller animals experiencing higher ketone concentrations than larger individuals, yet the effect of size on ketone bodies was independent of the flyover treatment. Although A. neotesselatus seem to adjust their behavior and eat more to buffer the potentially negative effect of flyovers on energetic pathways, they still appear to suffer a metabolic cost driven by the stress response via ketone accumulation, as well as a reproductive cost driven by clutch size investment that is independent of flyover disturbance. We suggest that military aircraft operators attempt to avoid dense populations of A. neotesselatus during the reproductive season or fly at altitudes that lead to decibel reads that fall below 50 dB at ground level, as a cautious management step that ensures the resilience and local abundance of A. neotesselatus at Fort Carson.

Coseismic surface fault displacement presents a serious potential hazard for structures and for lifeline infrastructure. Distributed lifeline infrastructure tends to cover large distances and may cross faults in multiple locations, especially in active tectonic regions like California. However, fault displacement measurements for engineering applications are quite sparse, rendering the development of predictive models extremely difficult and fraught with large uncertainties. Detailed fault surface rupture mapping products exist for a few documented cases, but they may not capture the full width of ground deformations that are likely to impact distributed infrastructure. The 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence presented an ideal opportunity to collect data and evaluate the ability of different techniques to capture coseismic deformations on and near the fault ruptures. Both the M 6.5 and 7.1 events ruptured the surface in sparsely populated desert areas where little vegetation is present to obscure surficial features. Two study areas (~400 m × 500 m each) around the surface ruptures from the two events were selected. Teams of researchers were deployed and coordinated to gather data in three ways: field measurements and photographs, imagery from small uninhabited aerial systems, and imagery from airborne light detection and ranging. Each of these techniques requires different amounts of resources in terms of cost, labor, and time associated with the data collection, processing, and interpretation efforts. This article presents the data collection methods used for the two study areas, and qualitative and quantitative comparisons of the results interpretations. While all three techniques capture the key features that are important for displacement design of distributed infrastructure, the use of remote sensing methods in combination with field measurements presents an advantage over the use of any single technique.

Life history theory predicts that there should be an inverse relationship between offspring size and number, because individuals cannot simultaneously maximize both when resources are limited. Although extensively studied in avian species, the occurrence and determinants of reproductive tradeoffs in oviparous reptiles are far less understood, particularly in parthenogenetic species. We studied this trade-off in the Colorado Checkered Whiptail, Aspidoscelis neotesselatus, a female-only parthenogenetic lizard. Using data previously collected in 2018 and 2019, we tested for clutch and egg size trade-offs and determined whether this relationship could be influenced by female size and aspects of physiological condition. Physiological condition included energy-mobilizing hormone (i.e. corticosterone ‘CORT’), oxidative stress (i.e. reactive oxygen metabolites ‘ROMs’), and innate immune function (bacterial killing ability ‘BKA’). We found the effect of clutch size on follicle size was significant, but not linear. Specifically, follicle size was on average larger in females with clutches of two follicles when compared to clutches of one follicle, but smaller in females with clutches of three when compared to clutches of two. In addition, females that were larger produced larger follicles regardless of clutch size. Neither CORT nor BKA affected the relationship between follicle size and clutch size. However, ROMs did explain variability in this relationship: oxidative stress was more elevated in females that produced larger clutches and larger follicles. We conclude that clutch size and body size are key life history traits that shape follicle size, and that investments into larger clutches and follicle size come at the cost of oxidative damage.

Objectives: There are disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) among African-American women and culturally adapted interventions are needed for this population. The purpose of this study was to conduct qualitative research to inform a cultural adaptation of the evidence-based Strong Women – Healthy Hearts intervention for midlife and older African-American women. Methods: Eligible participants were African-American women age ≥ 40 years, BMI ≥ 25, and sedentary. The study guide explored perceptions of heart disease and prevention using a novel construct, 'abundant life'. Twenty-two participants attended focus groups (N=5). A directed qualitative content analysis approach was used. Results: Participants described an abundant life as lack of stress, good health, and supportive relationships. Facilitators of abundant life and cardiovascular health often overlapped, including healthy diet, exercise, positive family and community ties, and spirituality. Key barriers included family caregiving burdens and the enduring legacy of racism which contributed to stress, environmental barriers to healthy eating and physical activity, and discriminatory experiences in the healthcare system. Conclusion: Participant responses were provided within the context of their personal values and social identities, providing insights that may support adaption of behavioral interventions for this high-need population.

Background: This study tested the feasibility of implementing Healthy Hearts for an Abundant Life (HHAL), a cultural adaptation for African American (AA) women of the evidence-based cardiovascular disease prevention program Strong Women-Healthy Hearts (SWHH). Methods: Using a quasi-experimental pre-post study design, this 12-week program was implemented in four faith-based organizations between 2017 and 2018. Eligible participants were AA women between 40 and 65 years who had a body mass index of 25 or higher and were currently sedentary. HHAL program participants met weekly for 2-h sessions led by program leaders. The curriculum has four modules: total health; relationships, family, and networks; material security and the environment; and emotional wellness. Each class included walking for 30 min, goal-setting session, and a group dialog called “making it work” for building collective efficacy. Results: Of the 27 participants (mean age=54.2±5.9), 24 completed postassessments (93% retention rate). All outcome measures proved feasible and weekly program attendance was 73%. Findings from in-depth interviews show high satisfaction with the program and suggest extending the class time and adding cooking demonstrations. Conclusions: The culturally adapted HHAL proved feasible and was positively received by the participants. Future studies will evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

Insecticides can exert strong selection on insect pest species, including those that vector diseases, and have led to rapid evolution of resistance. Despite such rapid evolution, relatively little is known about standing genetic variation for resistance in insecticide‐susceptible populations of many species. To help fill this knowledge gap, we generated genotyping‐by‐sequencing data from insecticide‐susceptible Phlebotomus papatasi and Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies that survived or died from a sub‐diagnostic exposure to either permethrin or malathion using a modified version of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention bottle bioassay. Multi‐locus genome‐wide association mapping methods were used to quantify standing genetic variation for insecticide resistance in these populations and to identify specific alleles associated with insecticide survival. For each insecticide treatment, we estimated the proportion of the variation in survival explained by the genetic data (i.e., “chip” heritability) and the number and contribution of individual loci with measurable effects. For all treatments, survival to an insecticide exposure was heritable with a polygenic architecture. Both P. papatasi and L. longipalpis had alleles for survival that resided within many genes throughout their genomes. The implications for resistance conferred by many alleles, as well as inferences made about the utility of laboratory insecticide resistance association studies compared to field observations, are discussed.

Introduction People experiencing homelessness (PEH) face poor health outcomes and extreme health inequity, and evidence suggests earlier onset of older age-associated conditions and signs of premature ageing. This is the first UK study to assess frailty in this population. The objective was to assess frailty, age-associated conditions, and multimorbidity in PEH residing in hostel accommodation, drawing comparisons with population data. Methods Participants were drawn from a hostel in London for PEH aged over 30. Age-associated conditions were identified using validated tools and a questionnaire modelled on comprehensive geriatric assessments. Participants’ keyworkers completed questionnaires to provide collateral information. Frailty was defined according to five criteria in Fried’s phenotype model: participants with three or more criteria are classified as frail, one or two criteria as vulnerable, and no criteria as not frail. Multimorbidity was defined as the presence of two or more long-term conditions in one person. Comparisons were made with population data from The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health Survey for England. Results Thirty-three people participated (83% of eligible residents), with a mean age of 55.7 years (range 38–74). Frailty was identified in 18/33 participants (55%), with 13/33 (39%) classified as vulnerable, and 2/33 (6%) as not frail. Participants met an average of 2.6/5 frailty phenotype criteria, comparable to 90-year-olds in the general population. The most common age-associated conditions identified were: falls (in 61%), visual impairment (61%), low grip strength (61%), mobility impairment (52%), and cognitive impairment (45%). Multimorbidity was present in all thirty-three participants. Conclusions A wide range of unmet health needs was identified. The high prevalence of frailty and age-associated conditions support evidence of premature ageing, indicating a need to include holistic older-age assessments in PEH at a younger age. Involvement of health professionals with experience of working with older people could contribute to improving health outcomes for homeless patients.

Musculoskeletal and sports medicine conditions are common in the emergency department (ED). Emergency physicians may not be receiving adequate education to achieve clinical competency in musculoskeletal medicine during residency training. This article aims to provide a standardized musculoskeletal and sports medicine curriculum for emergency medicine training. Broad curriculum goals include proficiency in evaluating and managing patients presenting to the ED with acute and chronic musculoskeletal complaints and other medical conditions related to or affected by physical exertion, sports participation, or environmental exposure. Specific objectives focus on knowledge of these disorders, physical examination skills, procedural skills including musculoskeletal ultrasound, appropriate consultation and referral, and patient education for these conditions. Educational methods will consist of didactics; online self-directed learning modules; simulation; and supervised clinical experiences in the ED, primary care sports medicine clinics, and orthopedic clinics if available. Curriculum implementation is expected to vary across programs due to differences in residency program structure and resources.

Eutrophication of surface waters is defined by excessive algal growth, with consequences for drinking water treatment. The sources of phosphorus (P) in southern U.S. reservoirs that fuel peak algal productivity in late summer are still not fully understood. One potential source is reservoir littoral zones, which have been described as the most productive zone of a waterbody. A shallow cove named Granny Hollow in Beaver Lake, northwest Arkansas, was selected as an isolated and semi-controlled location to measure and model sources of P and its transport in a littoral area for the month of July 2018. Hydraulic and P fluxes between the reservoir and littoral area were quantified through field measurements and a 3D lake model. In quantifying hydraulic flux for the month of July, the model indicated that water tended to move into the cove along the bottom and out along the top, with a net hydraulic flux out of the cove of -723,000 m3. Peak surface velocity in the cove averaged 2.09 cm s-1 for the month of July, while peak bottom velocity was 1.29 cm s-1. Diurnally, water movement switched directions, moving out of the cove along the surface during differential heating and into the cove along the surface during differential cooling due to thermoconvective flow. During differential heating, the water velocity and hydraulic flux to the main reservoir channel along the surface of the cove were greater than the velocity and flux in the opposite direction during differential cooling. The sources of P within the cove during July included P released from bottom sediments within the cove and littoral zone and transport of P from the reservoir channel to the cove. Transport of P from the main reservoir into the cove was a result of thermoconvective flow. During differential heating, bottom waters from the main reservoir channel were transported to the surface within the littoral zone by thermoconvective currents flowing upslope from deeper to shallower waters. This resulted in P exchange between the reservoir and littoral area and is significant because it represents movement of P from the bottom of the reservoir upward into the photic zone, where it can be used for algal productivity. During July 2018, it was estimated that 13.3 kg of P were transported from the bottom of the cove to the surface by convective currents and subsequently out of the cove. This study shows that eutrophic coves represent a significant source of P to the reservoir and more importantly to the photic zone, supporting algal growth. Organisms in the wild have to allocate limited resources towards competing functions such as reproduction, growth, and self-maintenance. These competing investments create significant changes in physiological activity, and we still know little about the relationship between physiological activity and reproductive investment in natura. We investigated trade-offs between physiological activity and reproductive investment in the parthenogenetic Colorado checkered whiptail, Aspidoscelis neotesselata, across three different sites at the US Army Fort Carson Military Installation near Colorado Springs, CO, throughout the reproductive season in 2018 and 2019. We measured clutch size and reproductive activity and quantified plasma corticosterone (CORT), reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs), and bacterial killing ability (BKA) to examine how energy-mobilizing hormones, oxidative stress, and immunity change in light of reproductive investment across different sub-populations. Circulating CORT increased with reproductive investment across all sub-populations, and increased clutch size led to a decrease in BKA in one sub-population, suggesting that habitat and nutritional availability may mediate this relationship. Oxidative stress, CORT, and innate immunity were not correlated with the exception of a trade-off between ROMs and BKA. This indicates individuals that have a better capacity to fight-off pathogens suffered increased reactive oxygen metabolites across all sub-populations, independently of habitat characteristics, which has important implications for A. neotesselata conservation.

Following the Ridgecrest earthquake sequence, consisting of an M 6.4 foreshock and M 7.1 mainshock along with many other events, the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance association deployed a team to gather perishable data. The team focused their efforts on documenting ground deformations including surface fault rupture south of the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, and liquefaction features in Trona and Argus. The team published a report within two weeks of the M 7.1 mainshock. This article presents data products gathered by the team, which are now published and publicly accessible. The data products presented herein include ground-based observations using Global Positioning System trackers, digital cameras, and hand-measuring devices, as well as unmanned aerial vehicle-based imaging products using Structure from Motion to create point clouds and digital surface models. The article describes the data products, as well as tools available for interacting with the products.

There is great interspecific variation in the nutritional composition of natural diets, and the varied nutritional content is physiologically tolerated because of evolutionarily based balances between diet composition and processing ability. However, as a result of landscape change and human exposure, unnatural diets are becoming widespread among wildlife without the necessary time for evolutionary matching between the diet and its processing. We tested how a controlled, unnatural high glucose diet affects glucose tolerance using captive green iguanas, and we performed similar glucose tolerance tests on wild Northern Bahamian rock iguanas that are either frequently fed grapes by tourists or experience no such supplementation. We evaluated both short and longer-term blood glucose responses and corticosterone (CORT) concentrations as changes have been associated with altered diets. Experimental glucose supplementation in the laboratory and tourist feeding in the wild both significantly affected glucose metabolism. When iguanas received a glucose-rich diet, we found greater acute increases in blood glucose following a glucose challenge. Relative to unfed iguanas, tourist-fed iguanas had significantly lower baseline CORT, higher baseline blood glucose, and slower returns to baseline glucose levels following a glucose challenge. Therefore, unnatural consumption of high amounts of glucose alters glucose metabolism in laboratory iguanas with short-term glucose treatment and free-living iguanas exposed to long-term feeding by tourists. Based on these results and the increasing prevalence of anthropogenically altered wildlife diets, the consequences of dietary changes on glucose metabolism should be further investigated across species, as such changes in glucose metabolism have health consequences in humans (e.g. diabetes).

Tight-fitting respirators are a critical component of respiratory protection against airborne diseases for health workers. However, they are not recommended for health workers with facial hair. Some health workers are unable to shave for religious or medical reasons. Under-mask beard covers have been proposed as a solution to allow health workers with facial hair to wear tight-fitting respirators. However, studies to date have been limited by their predominant reliance on qualitative rather than quantitative fit testing techniques.To assess the efficacy of under-mask beard covers in achieving an adequate seal with tight-fitting disposable P2/N95 respirators using quantitative fit testing.Bearded adult males underwent quantitative fit testing with an under-mask beard cover using either a TSI PortaCount Respirator Fit Tester 8038 or an AccuFit 9000 PRO fit testing device on up to five disposable P2/N95 respirators (3M 1860, 3M 1870+, BYD N95 Healthcare Particulate Respirator, BSN Medical ProShield N-95 Medium and Trident RTCFFP2). The primary outcome was the proportion of subjects that passed or failed quantitative fit testing with an under-mask beard cover.Thirty subjects were assessed; of these, 24 (80%) passed quantitative fit testing with at least one tight-fitting P2/N95 disposable respirator. Among these subjects, the median best-achieved fit factor was 200 (interquartile range 178-200). None of the subjects had an adverse reaction to the under-mask beard cover.The under-mask beard cover technique may be used to achieve a satisfactory seal with tight-fitting P2/N95 respirators in health workers with facial hair who cannot shave.
