Abstract: An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 A MeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract: We report on first experimental observations of nuclear fermionic and bosonic components displaying different behaviours in the decay of hot Ca projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral collisions at sub-Fermi energies. The experimental setup, constituted by the coupling of the INDRA 4π detector array to the forward angle VAMOS magnetic spectrometer, allowed to reconstruct the mass, charge and excitation energy of the decaying hot projectile-like sources. By means of quantum-fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and local partial densities of bosons and fermions could be correlated to the excitation energy of the reconstructed system. The results are consistent with the production of dilute mixed systems of bosons and fermions, where bosons experience higher phase-space and energy density as compared to the surrounding fermionic gas. Our findings recall phenomena observed in the study of Bose condensates and Fermi gases in atomic traps despite the different scales.

Abstract: The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca+12C at 25 MeV per nucleon bombarding energy was used to produce α-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited 16O, 20Ne and 24Mg is reported. Abstract: In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: International audience; The neutron-proton (n-p) equilibration process in Ca48+Ca40 at 35 MeV/nucleon bombarding energy is experimentally estimated by means of the isospin transport ratio. Experimental data are collected with a subset of the FAZIA telescope array, which permits us to determine the Z and N of detected fragments. For the first time, the quasiprojectile (QP) evaporative channel is compared with the QP breakup one in a homogeneous and consistent way, pointing to comparable n-p equilibration, which suggests a close interaction time between projectile and target independently of the exit channel. Moreover, in the QP evaporative channel n-p equilibration is compared with the prediction of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model coupled with the Gemini statistical model as an afterburner, showing a higher probability of proton and neutron transfers in the simulation with respect to the experimental data.

Abstract: Isospin transport ratio is a powerful method to estimate the neutron-proton (n-p) equilibration in heavy-ion collisions, and extensively used to obtain information on the asy-stiffness of the nuclear equation of state. In fact such a ratio is expected to bypass any perturbations introducing a linear transformation of the chosen observable. In particular, it is supposed to overcome contributions due to emission, either of dynamical or statistical nature, from the primary fragments formed during the collisions. In this paper we explore the validity of this assumption, looking at the quasiprojectile n-p ratio ($N/Z$) in peripheral and semiperipheral events for $\mathrm{Ca}+\mathrm{Ca}$ reactions at $35\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{nucleon}$, simulated via the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics transport model, coupled to different statistical decay codes. The statistical de-excitation of the primary fragments introduces a linear transformation at relatively high excitation energies (above $2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{nucleon}$) when the residue approaches the evaporation attractor line, while some effect is produced at lower excitation energies due to the occurrence of some nonlinearities. As for fast emissions after the end of the projectile-target interaction it is shown that they introduce a nonlinear transformation too.

Abstract: Experimental results concerning the dynamical fission of quasiprojectiles in semiperipheral collisions for the system Kr80+Ca48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four blocks of the FAZIA setup in the first physics experiment of the FAZIA Collaboration. The degree of isospin equilibration between the two fission fragments and its dependence on their charge asymmetry is investigated. The data are compared with the results of the AMD model coupled to GEMINI as an afterburner, in order to get hints about the timescale of the process.

Abstract: International audience; Profiting from previous works done with the INDRA multidetector on the description of the light response L of the CsI( Tl ) crystals to different impinging nuclei, we propose an improved ΔE−L identification-calibration procedure for Silicon–Caesium Iodide (Si–CsI) telescopes, namely an Advanced Mass Estimate ( AME ) method. AME is compared to the usual, simple visual analysis of the corresponding two-dimensional map of ΔE−E type, by using INDRA experimental data from nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions in the Fermi energy regime. We show that the capability of such telescopes to identify both the atomic Z and the mass A numbers of light and heavy reaction products, can be quantitatively improved thanks to the proposed approach. This conclusion opens new possibilities to use INDRA for studying these reactions especially with radioactive beams. Indeed, the determination of the mass for charged reaction products becomes of paramount importance to shed light on the role of the isospin degree of freedom in the nuclear equation of state [ 1,2 ].

Abstract: International audience; FAZIA is designed for detailed studies of the isospin degree of freedom, extending to the limits the isotopic identification of charged products from nuclear collisions when using silicon detectors and CsI(Tl) scintillators. We show that the FAZIA telescopes give isotopic identification up to Z$\sim$25 with a $\Delta$E-E technique. Digital Pulse Shape Analysis makes possible elemental identification up to Z=55 and isotopic identification for Z=1-10 when using the response of a single silicon detector. The project is now in the phase of building a demonstrator comprising about 200 telescopes.

Abstract: International audience; The proton energy calibration and the corresponding identification efficiency of the Thallium activated Cesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)) crystals of the Fazia detection system have been studied in the range of 59–180 MeV by using the proton beam delivered by the cyclotron of the CCB (Cyclotron Center Bronowice) facility. The light output versus energy is linear in the lower portion of the investigated energy range while showing a deviation from linearity on the higher energy side. The effects of proton induced nuclear collisions have been identified and estimated via Pulse Shape Analysis in CsI(Tl) crystals. Experimental efficiency for proton identification in the examined energy range is deduced and compared with GEANT4 simulations. For a well collimated crystal, and at the highest considered energy, the efficiency value comes out to be about 70%.

Abstract: The FAZIA apparatus is a new detector designed for the Fermi energy domain for charged particles based on three stages telescopes: Silicon detector (300 μm thick), Silicon detector (500 μm thick) and CsI(Tl) (10 cm). Using the ΔE-E technique and the Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) it permits the charge and mass discrimination up to more than Z=20. In the following, some details about the FAZIA detectors and electronics, their performance and the frst experimental campaigns already performed will be discussed.

Abstract: Energy dissipation and cluster production in central nuclear collisions in the Fermi energy range have been investigated using the large INDRA database. A study of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{NN}^{*}$, has been performed by comparing the results of a model with the measured isotropy ratio of the kinetic energy distributions of the detected protons. This analysis has been done for a large variety of systems at various incident energies from 20 to 100 MeV/nucleon and confirms nicely previous results with enhanced statistics in a full Monte Carlo treatment. Most importantly, it is found that ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{NN}^{*}$ is drastically reduced as compared to the vacuum values, due partly to Pauli blocking but also to in-medium effects for which mean values and uncertainties are given. Concerning the cluster production, a coalescence model has been developed to study the parallel and perpendicular velocity distributions of the light clusters ($A\ensuremath{\le}4$). For ${A}_{C}=3$ ($^{3}\mathrm{H}, ^{3}\mathrm{He}$), it is found that the mean internal kinetic energy of the nucleons in the cluster is reduced as compared to the vacuum value. These two results shows that any comparison between experimental and theoretical predictions in heavy-ions induced reactions around and above the Fermi energy must take into account these in-medium effects.

Abstract: By using freeze-out properties of multifragmenting hot nuclei produced in quasifusion central $^{129}$Xe+$^{nat}$Sn collisions at different beam energies (32, 39, 45 and 50 AMeV) which were estimated by means of a simulation based on experimental data collected by the $4\pi$ INDRA multidetector, heat capacity in the thermal excitation energy range 4 - 12.5 AMeV was calculated from total kinetic energies and multiplicities at freeze-out. The microcanonical formulation was employed. Abstract: Proton energy calibration and identification efficiency of few Thallium activated Cesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)) crystals of the FAZIA detection system, have been studied in the range 59-180 MeV by using the proton beam delivered by the cyclotron of the CCB (Cyclotron Center Bronowice) facility. We observe that the light output versus energy is linear in the lower investigated energy range while showing a deviation from linearity above 140 MeV. The effects of proton induced nuclear reactions and multiple scattering causing incomplete energy deposition (IED) events have been identified and estimated via Pulse Shape Analysis in CsI(Tl) crystals. The measured experimental efficiency for proton identification in the examined energy range is then compared with GEANT4 simulations. For a centered collimated irradiation on the crystal, and at the highest measured energy, the resulting experimental efficiency value is about 70%.

Abstract: International audience; An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this extra production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 MeV per nucleon incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. N/Z influence was also studied. The nature of the phase transition dynamics i.e. the fragment formation was the last missing piece of the puzzle concerning the liquidgas transition in nuclei.

Abstract: The modification of the ground state properties of light atomic nuclei in the nuclear and stellar medium is addressed, using chemical equilibrium constants evaluated from a new analysis of the intermediate energy heavy-ion (Xe$+$Sn) collision data measured by the INDRA collaboration. Three different reactions are considered, mainly differing by the isotopic content of the emission source. The thermodynamic conditions of the data samples are extracted from the measured multiplicities allowing for a parametrization of the in-medium modification, determined with the single hypothesis that the different nuclear species in a given sample correspond to a unique common value for the density of the expanding source. We show that this correction, which was not considered in previous analyses of chemical constants from heavy ion collisions, is necessary, since the observables of the analyzed systems show strong deviations from the expected results for an ideal gas of free clusters. This data set is further compared to a relativistic mean-field model, and seen to be reasonably compatible with a universal correction of the attractive $\sigma$-meson coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract: International audience; In nuclear thermodynamics, the determination of the excitation energy of hot nuclei is a fundamental experimental problem. Instrumental physicists have been trying to solve this problem for several years by building the most exhaustive 4π detector arrays and perfecting their calorimetry techniques. In a recent paper, a proposal for a new calorimetry, called “3D calorimetry”, was made. It tries to optimize the separation between the particles and fragments emitted by the quasiprojectile and the other possible contributions. This can be achieved by determining the experimental probability for a given nucleus of a nuclear reaction to be emitted by the quasiprojectile. It has been developed for the INDRA data. In the present work, we wanted to dissect and validate this new method of characterization of a hot quasiprojectile. So we tried to understand and control it completely to determine these limits. Using the Heavy Ion Phase Space Exploration (HIPSE) event generator and a software simulating the functioning of INDRA, we were able to achieve this goal and provide a quantitative estimation of the quality of the quasiprojectile characterization.

Abstract: Background: The isovector part of the nuclear equation of state remains partly unknown and is the subject of many studies. The degree of equilibration between the two main collision partners in heavy ion reactions may be used to study the equation of state since it is connected to isospin (N/Z) transport properties of nuclear matter. Purpose: We aim to test chemical equilibrium attainment by measuring isotopic characteristics of emitted elements as a function of impact parameter. Method: We study four Xe136,124+Sn124,112 reactions at 32 MeV/nucleon. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility. Combined (projectile+target) systems are identical for two studied reactions, therefore it is possible to study the path towards chemical equilibrium from different neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) entrance channels. The study is limited to identified isotopes detected in the forward part of the center of mass in order to focus on the evolution of projectile-like fragment isotopic content and the benefit of excellent detection performances of the forward part of the apparatus. Results: Light charged particle productions, multiplicities, and abundance ratios dependence against impact parameter are studied. It is measured to almost identical mean characteristics for the two Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions. Comparing all four studied systems it is shown that mean values evolve from projectile N/Z to projectile+target N/Z dependence. Those identical mean characteristics concern all light charged particles except He3 whose mean behavior is strongly different. Conclusions: Our inclusive analysis (no event selection) shows that N/Z equilibration between the projectile-like and the target-like is realized to a high degree for central collisions. The light charged particle production mean value difference between Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions is of the order of a few %. This slight difference could be explained by pre-equilibrium particle emission whose intensity may differ for the two reactions. This point is demonstrated using He3 mean characteristics whose production takes place before chemical equilibrium attainment. The realized N/Z balance between projectile-like and target-like does not imply a pure two-body mechanism. Indeed a midrapidity production of light charged particle does exist and its N/Z is different as compared to the projectile-like one: it is n enriched. This point is touched using He6 midrapidity production which is favored by the drift phenomenon.

Abstract: A new modular and high versatility hodoscope , OSCAR, has been developed and characterized. The aim of this hodoscope is to work as an ancillary detector of present large acceptance heavy ion detectors in specific angular regions where low thresholds and high granularities are needed. We discuss the capabilities of OSCAR in the Δ E–E identification of very low energy light particles, providing a precise map of the thickness uniformity of the Δ E (SSSSD, 20 μ m ) stage and showing how the thickness gradient affects the identification of particles. Energy spectra of light identified particles produced in Ca+Ca collisions at 35 AMeV are used to investigate isospin transport phenomena involving the emission of low energy particles from the quasi-target (QT) source in semi-peripheral nuclear collisions. The possibility to explore particle–particle correlations are also discussed.

Abstract: In the domain of Fermi energy, the hot nucleus temperature can be determined by using the energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles. But this method of measurement is not without difficulties both theoretical and experimental. The presented study aims to disentangle the respective influences of different factors on the quality of this measurement : the physics, the detection (a 4? detector array as INDRA) and the experimental procedure. This analysis demonstrates the possibility of determining from an energy spectrum, with an accuracy of about 10 %, the true apparent temperature felt by a given type of particle emitted by a hot nucleus. Three conditions are however necessary : have a perfect detector of particles, an important statistics and very few secondary emissions. According to the GEMINI event generator, for hot nuclei of intermediate mass, only deuterons and tritons could fill these conditions. This temperature can allow to trace back to the initial temperature by using an appropriate method. This determination may be better than 15 %. With a real experimental device, an insufficient angular resolution and topological distortions caused by the detection can damage spectra to the point to make very difficult a correct determination of the apparent temperature. Abstract: An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 AMeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract: International audience; In heavy-ion collisions at low energy, the decay mode of the compound nucleus formed in fusion reactions can be strongly influenced by the isospin degree of freedom, strictly connected to the isotopic ratio N/Z of the system. The competition among the disintegration modes of 118,134Ba∗ produced in 78,86Kr+40,48Ca reactions at 10 A MeV has been studied in the framework of the ISODEC experiment, and experimental data have been compared with the prediction of GEMINI++ and DiNuclear System (DNS) models.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents a new semi-automatic method for charge and mass identification of charged nuclear fragments using either ∆E − E correlations between measured energy losses in two successive detectors or correlations between charge signal amplitude and rise time in a single silicon detector, derived from digital pulse shape analysis techniques. In both cases different nuclear species (defined by their atomic number Z and mass number A) can be visually identified from such correlations if they are presented as a two-dimensional histogram (’identification matrix’), in which case correlations for different species populate different ridge lines (’identification lines’) in the matrix. The proposed algorithm is based on the identification matrix’s properties and uses as little information as possible on the global form of the identification lines, making it applicable to a large variety of matrices. Particular attention has been paid to the implementation in a suitable graphical environment, so that only two mouse-clicks are required from the user to calculate all initialization parameters. Example applications to recent data from both INDRA and FAZIA telescopes are presented.

Abstract: Unstable 10C nuclei are produced as quasi-projectiles in 12C+24Mg collisions at E/A = 53 and 95 MeV. The decay of their short-lived states is studied with the INDRA multidetector array via multi-particle correlation functions. Abstract: The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract: The next generation of 4π4π detector arrays for heavy ion studies will largely use Pulse Shape Analysis to push the performance of silicon detectors with respect to ion identification. Energy resolution and pulse shape identification capabilities of silicon detectors under prolonged irradiation by energetic heavy ions have thus become a major issue. In this framework, we have studied the effects of irradiation by energetic heavy ions on the response of neutron transmutation doped (nTD) silicon detectors. Sizeable effects on the amplitude and the risetime of the charge signal have been found for detectors irradiated with large fluences of stopped heavy ions, while much weaker effects were observed by punching-through ions. The robustness of ion identification based on digital pulse shape techniques has been evaluated.

Abstract: The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

Abstract: We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of (N/Z) isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin “migration”, that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean ﬁeld (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Abstract: A ΔE-E telescope exploiting a single silicon chip for both ΔE measurement and scintillation light collection has been tested. It is a Si-CsI(Tl) telescope tailored for mass identification of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. A procedure based on two different shaping filters allows for extraction of the ΔE-E information from the single silicon signal. The quality of the obtained fragment identification is expressed in terms of a figure of merit and compared to that of a standard ΔE-E telescope. The presented configuration could be a good candidate for the basic cell of a large solid angle array of ΔE-E telescopes, given the reduction in complexity and cost of the front-end electronics.

Abstract: The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(TI) and silicon-CsI(TI) telescopes to fragments produced in nuclear interactions has been studied. The telescopes were developed within the FAZIA collaboration. The capabilities of two methods are compared: (a) the standard Delta E-E technique and (b) the digital Pulse Shape Analysis technique (for identification of nuclear fragments stopped in a single Si-layer). In a test setup, nuclear fragments covering a large range in nuclear charge, mass and energy were detected. They were produced in nuclear reactions induced by a 35A MeV beam of Xe-129 impinging on various targets. It was found that the Delta E-E correlations allow the identification of all isotopes up to Z similar to 25. With the digital Pulse Shape Analysis it is possible to fully distinguish the charge of stopped nuclei up to the maximum available Z (slightly over that of the beam, Z=54).

Abstract: In the last few years the FAZIA [1] collaboration has been investigating the properties of silicon detectors – in particular the crystal orientation and resistivity non-uniformity – in order to better pin down the detector characteristics that influence their performances for particle identification using Δ E − E and Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) techniques. In this paper we present the first particle identification results obtained with detectors selected for good resistivity uniformity and using a “non-channeled” configuration. A new digital electronics was also designed for the R&D phase of FAZIA and was tested under beam for the first time. A quantitative procedure to measure the observed performances is applied in order to quantify the particle identification thresholds. Particle identification thresholds of ∼ 2.5 AMeV for Z ∼ 3 – 10 have been reached with the studied reaction.

Abstract: International audience; The FAZIA apparatus exploits Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) to identify nuclear fragments stopped in the first layer of a Silicon-Silicon-CsI(Tl) detector telescope. In this work, for the first time, we show that the isotopes of fragments having atomic number as high as Z∼20 can be identified. Such a remarkable result has been obtained thanks to a careful construction of the Si detectors and to the use of low noise and high performance digitizing electronics. Moreover, optimized PSA algorithms are needed. This work deals with the choice of the best algorithm for PSA of current signals. A smoothing spline algorithm is demonstrated to give optimal results without requiring too much computational resources.

Abstract: The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes, developed within the FAZIA collaboration, to fragments produced in nuclear reactions 84 Krþ 120-124 Sn at 35 A MeV, has been used to study ion identification methods. Two techniques are considered for the identification of the nuclear products in the silicon stages. The standard DEE one requires signals induced in two detection layers by ions punching through the first one. Conversely, the digital Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) allows the identification of ions stopped in the first silicon layer. The capabilities of these two identification methods have been compared for different mountings of the silicons, i.e. rear (particles entering through the low electric field side) or front (particles entering through the high electric field side) side injection. The DEE identification method gives exactly the same results in both configurations. At variance, the pulse shape discrimination is very sensitive to the detector mounting. In case of rear side injection, the identification with the ''energy vs. charge rise time'' PSA method presents energy thresholds which are significantly lower than in the case of front side injection. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Background: We study heavy-ion reactions from barrier up to Fermi energy. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility.Purpose: We aim to determine the reaction and fusion cross sections for the reactions induced by $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}$ projectiles on $^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ targets for incident energies ranging from $8A$ to $35A$ MeV. In particular, the evaluation of the fusion and incomplete fusion cross sections is the main purpose, altogether with the comparison with the systematics of Eudes et al. [Europhys. Lett. 104, 22001 (2013)].Method: The reaction cross sections are evaluated at each beam energy with data acquired thanks to the INDRA $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ array. The events are sorted with the help of the observable ${E}_{\text{iso,max}}$. We focus therefore our study on a selected sample of events, in such a way that the fusion and incomplete fusion cross sections can be estimated.Results: We present the excitation function of reaction and fusion cross sections for the heavy and nearly symmetric system $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}+^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ from $8A$ to $35A$ MeV. For the fusion excitation function the comparison with the systematics of Eudes et al. seems to be in a fair agreement starting from the beam energy $20A$ MeV. For the lower beam energies ($8A$ and $12A$ MeV) discrepancies are observed.Conclusions: The evaluated fusionlike cross sections show a good agrement with a recent systematics for beam energies greater than $20A$ MeV. For low beam energies the cross-sectional values are lower than the expected ones. A probable reason for these low values is in the fusion hindrance at energies above or close to the barrier.

Abstract: International audience; The nuclear reaction (40)Ca+(12)C at 25 MeV per nucleon incident energy was used to produce excited alpha-conjugate fragments from projectile fragmentation mechanism. From a careful selection provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited light alpha-conjugate nuclei is reported.

Abstract: International audience; Nuclear reactions between medium-mass nuclei at low energy are characterized by the competition between binary and evaporation process in the compound nucleus de-excitation. A study of the influence of the neutron richness of the entrance channel on the decay paths of the compound nuclei formed in the (78) Kr +(40) Ca and (86) Kr +(48) Ca at 10 MeV/A is presented. The experiment has been performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud by using the CHIMERA 4π multidetector for charged particles. The Kinematical characteristics of the two reactions support the conclusion of a production via long lived system. Besides the results relative to the n-poor system are compared to those obtained at GANIL, performed at 5.5 AMeV, in order to study the energy influence.

Abstract: We report experimental signals of Bose-Einstein condensation in the decay of hot Ca projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral collisions at sub-Fermi energies. The experimental setup, constituted by the coupling of the INDRA 4$\pi$ detector array to the forward angle VAMOS magnetic spectrometer, allowed us to reconstruct the mass, charge and excitation energy of the decaying hot projectile-like sources. Furthermore, by means of quantum fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and mean volumes per particle "as seen by" bosons and fermions separately are correlated to the excitation energy of the reconstructed system. The obtained results are consistent with the production of dilute mixed (bosons/fermions) systems, where bosons experience a smaller volume as compared to the surrounding fermionic gas. Our findings recall similar phenomena observed in the study of boson condensates in atomic traps., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (december 2014)

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Abstract: We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. We show that data are better described by SMM than by GEMINI in agreement with the fact that multifragmentation is responsible for fragment production at excitation energies around 3 MeV/nucleon., 16 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables Soumis \`a Nuclear Physics A

Abstract: The equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter is still controversial, as predictions at subsaturation as well as above normal density widely diverge. We discuss several experimental results measured in heavy-ion collisions with the INDRA array in the incident energy range 5-80 MeV/nucleon. In particular an estimate of the density dependence of the symmetry energy is derived from isospin diffusion results compared with a transport code: the potential part of the symmetry energy linearly increases with the density. We demonstrate that isospin equilibrium is reached in mid-central collisions for the two reactions Ni+Au at 52 MeV/nucleon and Xe+Sn at 32 MeV/nucleon. New possible variables and an improved modelization to investigate symmetry energy are discussed., Comment: Review for the special issue of EPJA on symmetry energy. 20 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: International audience; FAZIA is a multidetector specifically designed to optimize A and Z reaction product identification in heavy-ion collision experiments. This multidetector is modular and based on three-layer telescopes made of two silicon detectors followed by a thick (10 cm) CsI(Tl) scintillator read-out by a photodiode. Its electronics is fully digital. The goal to push at maximum identification capability while preserving excellent energy resolution, can be achieved by using pulse-shape analysis techniques and by making an intensive use of high-speed flash ADCs. This paper presents the front-end part of the electronics.

Abstract: International audience; The results of the analysis of the reactions 78,86Kr +40,48 Ca at 10 AMeV are presented. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania by using the 4π multidetector CHIMERA, with beams delivered by the Superconductive Cyclotron. The competition among the various disintegration paths and in particular the isospin effects on the decay modes of the produced composite systems are investigated; this provides information about fundamental nuclear quantities such as level density, fission barrier and viscosity. Different isotopic composition and relative richness are observed among the reaction products of the two systems. An odd-even staggering effect is present in the charge distributions, in particular for the light fragments produced by the neutron-poor system. The kinematical characteristics of the IMF seem to indicate a high degree of the relaxation of the formed system. Besides, global features analysis seems to show some differences in the contribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the two reactions.

Abstract: In past experiments, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at ELab(112,124Sn)=35 A.MeV beam energy by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. From a quantitative comparison of cross sections associated to Statistical and Dynamical Fission of the Projectile-Like Fragments, it resulted that Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system than in the 112Sn +58 Ni neutron poor one. In contrast, no sizable difference was found for Statistical Fission mechanism. The observed difference in the strength of the Dynamical effects could arise from the difference in entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content. In order to disentangle Isospin effects from effects due to the different masses of the two systems, a new experiment 124Xe+64Zn at 35 A.MeV beam energy has been recently carried out.

Abstract: De-excitation modes of compound systems 118Ba and 134Ba, produced respectively in the 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca collisions at 10 A.MeV, are investigated. In particular, the competition between the various disintegration decay paths of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes and the isospin (related to N/Z) of the entrance channel influence on the decay process, are studied. Data were taken at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in ISODEC experiment, by using the CHIMERA array. The experiment complements and improves the previous experiment performed at GANIL where the same mechanisms were studied at lower excitation energies. The results show the presence of a relaxed component in the reaction mechanism, evident staggering effects in the Z distributions, as well as different isotopic composition and neutron enrichment for the reaction products in the two systems.

Abstract: The european Fazia collaboration aims at building a new modular array for charged product identification to be employed for heavy-ion studies. The elementary module of the array is a Silicon-Silicon-CsI telescope, optimized for ion identification also via pulse shape analysis. The achievement of top performances imposes specific electronics which has been developed by FAZIA and features high quality charge and current preamplifiers, coupled to fully digital front-end. During the initial R&D phase, original and novel solutions have been tested in prototypes, obtaining unprecedented ion identification capabilities. FAZIA is now constructing a demonstrator array consisting of about two hundreds telescopes arranged in a compact and transportable configuration. In this contribution, we mainly summarize some aspects studied by FAZIA to improve the ion identification. Then we will briefly discuss the FAZIA program centered on experiments to be done with the demonstrator. Abstract: In 129 Xe+ nat Sn central collisions from 8 to 25 MeV/A, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. We show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. The sequence of fragment production is determined. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. A comparison with Coulomb trajec-tory calculations shows that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming quasi-simultaneous above excitation energy E * = 4.0$\pm$0.5 MeV/A. This transition from sequential to simultaneous break-up was interpreted as the signature of the onset of multifragmentation for the three-fragment exit channel in this system., Comment: 12 pages; 13 Figures; 4 Table; Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract: Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasi-fused nuclei produced in central $^{129}$Xe + $^{nat}$Sn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties in the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV [Nucl. Phys. A809 (2008) 111]. From these properties and the temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations, constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonic behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Such results support the existence of a first order phase transition for hot nuclei., 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Physics Letters B
