We address the challenge of estimating the hyperuniformity exponent $\alpha$ of a spatial point process, given only one realization of it. Assuming that the structure factor $S$ of the point process follows a vanishing power law at the origin (the typical case of a hyperuniform point process), this exponent is defined as the slope near the origin of $\log S$. Our estimator is built upon the (expanding window) asymptotic variance of some wavelet transforms of the point process. By combining several scales and several wavelets, we develop a multi-scale, multi-taper estimator $\widehat{\alpha}$. We analyze its asymptotic behavior, proving its consistency under various settings, and enabling the construction of asymptotic confidence intervals for $\alpha$ when $\alpha < d$ and under Brillinger mixing. This construction is derived from a multivariate central limit theorem where the normalisations are non-standard and vary among the components. We also present a non-asymptotic deviation inequality providing insights into the influence of tapers on the bias-variance trade-off of $\widehat{\alpha}$. Finally, we investigate the performance of $\widehat{\alpha}$ through simulations, and we apply our method to the analysis of hyperuniformity in a real dataset of marine algae.

This paper presents a statistical model for stationary ergodic point processes, estimated from a single realization observed in a square window. With existing approaches in stochastic geometry, it is very difficult to model processes with complex geometries formed by a large number of particles. Inspired by recent works on gradient descent algorithms for sampling maximum-entropy models, we describe a model that allows for fast sampling of new configurations reproducing the statistics of the given observation. Starting from an initial random configuration, its particles are moved according to the gradient of an energy, in order to match a set of prescribed moments (functionals). Our moments are defined via a phase harmonic operator on the wavelet transform of point patterns. They allow one to capture multi-scale interactions between the particles, while controlling explicitly the number of moments by the scales of the structures to model. We present numerical experiments on point processes with various geometric structures, and assess the quality of the model by spectral and topological data analysis.

Many specific problems ranging from theoretical probability to applications in statistical physics, combinatorial optimization and communications can be formulated as an optimal tuning of local parameters in large systems of interacting particles. Using the framework of stationary point processes in the Euclidean space, we pose it as a problem of an optimal stationary marking of a given stationary point process. The quality of a given marking is evaluated in terms of scores calculated in a covariant manner for all points in function of the proposed marked configuration. In the absence of total order of the configurations of scores, we identify intensity-optimality and local optimality as two natural ways for defining optimal stationary marking. We derive tightness and integrability conditions under which intensity-optimal markings exist and further stabilization conditions making them equivalent to locally optimal ones. It has been shown that deploying device-to-device (D2D) networks in urban environments requires equipping a considerable proportion of crossroads with relays. This represents a necessary economic investment for an operator. In this work, we tackle the problem of the economic feasibility of such relay-assisted D2D networks. First, we propose a stochastic model taking into account a positive surface for streets and crossroads, thus allowing for a more realistic estimation of the minimal number of needed relays. Secondly, we introduce a cost model for the deployment of relays, allowing one to study operators' D2D deployment strategies. We investigate the example of an uberizing neo-operator willing to set up a network entirely relying on D2D and show that a return on the initial investment in relays is possible in a realistic period of time, even if the network is funded by a very low revenue per D2D user. In this work, we study a new model for continuum line-of-sight percolation in a random environment driven by the Poisson-Voronoi tessellation in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. The edges (one-dimensional facets, or simply 1-facets) of this tessellation are the support of a Cox point process, while the vertices (zero-dimensional facets or simply 0-facets) are the support of a Bernoulli point process. Taking the superposition $Z$ of these two processes, two points of $Z$ are linked by an edge if and only if they are sufficiently close and located on the same edge (1-facet) of the supporting tessellation. We study the percolation of the random graph arising from this construction and prove that a 0-1 law, a subcritical phase as well as a supercritical phase exist under general assumptions. Our proofs are based on a coarse-graining argument with some notion of stabilization and asymptotic essential connectedness to investigate continuum percolation for Cox point processes. We also give numerical estimates of the critical parameters of the model in the planar case, where our model is intended to represent telecommunications networks in a random environment with obstructive conditions for signal propagation., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures. Motivated by the prediction of cell loads in cellular networks, we formulate the following new, fundamental problem of statistical learning of geometric marks of point processes: An unknown marking function, depending on the geometry of point patterns, produces characteristics (marks) of the points. One aims at learning this function from the examples of marked point patterns in order to predict the marks of new point patterns. To approximate (interpolate) the marking function, in our baseline approach, we build a statistical regression model of the marks with respect some local point distance representation. In a more advanced approach, we use a global data representation via the scattering moments of random measures, which build informative and stable to deformations data representation, already proven useful in image analysis and related application domains. In this case, the regression of the scattering moments of the marked point patterns with respect to the non-marked ones is combined with the numerical solution of the inverse problem, where the marks are recovered from the estimated scattering moments. Considering some simple, generic marks, often appearing in the modeling of wireless networks, such as the shot-noise values, nearest neighbour distance, and some characteristics of the Voronoi cells, we show that the scattering moments can capture similar geometry information as the baseline approach, and can reach even better performance, especially for non-local marking functions. In this paper we present a simple, stochastic-geometric model of a wireless access network exploiting the LoRA (Long Range) protocol, which is a non-expensive technology allowing for long-range, single-hop connectivity for the Internet of Things. We assume a space-time Poisson model of packets transmitted by LoRA nodes to a fixed base station. Following previous studies of the impact of interference, we assume that a given packet is successfully received when no interfering packet arrives with similar power before the given packet payload phase. This is as a consequence of LoRa using different transmission rates for different link budgets (transmissions with smaller received powers use larger spreading factors) and LoRa intra-technology interference treatment. Using our model, we study the scaling of the packet reception probabilities per link budget as a function of the spatial density of nodes and their rate of transmissions. We consider both the parameter values recommended by the LoRa provider, as well as proposing LoRa tuning to improve the equality of performance for all link budgets. We also consider spatially non-homogeneous distributions of LoRa nodes. We show also how a fair comparison to non-slotted Aloha can be made within the same framework., Comment: 8 pages

A new type of dependent thinning for point processes in continuous space is proposed, which leverages the advantages of determinantal point processes defined on finite spaces and, as such, is particularly amenable to statistical, numerical, and simulation techniques. It gives a new point process that can serve as a network model exhibiting repulsion. The properties and functions of the new point process, such as moment measures, the Laplace functional, the void probabilities, as well as conditional (Palm) characteristics can be estimated accurately by simulating the underlying (non-thinned) point process, which can be taken, for example, to be Poisson. This is in contrast (and preference to) finite Gibbs point processes, which, instead of thinning, require weighting the Poisson realizations, involving usually intractable normalizing constants. Models based on determinantal point processes are also well suited for statistical (supervised) learning techniques, allowing the models to be fitted to observed network patterns with some particular geometric properties. We illustrate this approach by imitating with determinantal thinning the well-known Mat{\'e}rn~II hard-core thinning, as well as a soft-core thinning depending on nearest-neighbour triangles. These two examples demonstrate how the proposed approach can lead to new, statistically optimized, probabilistic transmission scheduling schemes., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. In this work, we use percolation theory to study the feasibility of large-scale connectivity of relay-augmented device-to-device (D2D) networks in an urban scenario, featuring a haphazard system of streets and canyon shadowing allowing only for line-of-sight (LOS) communications in a limited finite range. We use a homogeneous Poisson-Voronoi tessellation (PVT) model of streets with homogeneous Poisson users (devices) on its edges and independent Bernoulli relays on the vertices. Using this model, we demonstrated the existence of a minimal threshold for relays below which large-scale connectivity of the network is not possible, regardless of all other network parameters. Through simulations, we estimated this threshold to 71.3%. Moreover, if the mean street length is not larger than some threshold (predicted to 74.3% of the communication range; which might be the case in a typical urban scenario) then any (whatever small) density of users can be compensated by equipping more crossroads with relays. Above this latter threshold, good connectivity requires some minimal density of users, compensated by the relays in a way we make explicit. We state and solve a problem of the optimal geographic caching of content in cellular networks, where linear combinations of contents are stored in the caches of base stations. We consider a general content popularity distribution and a general distribution of the number of stations covering the typical location in the network. We are looking for a policy of content caching maximizing the probability of serving the typical content request from the caches of covering stations. The problem has a special form of monotone sub-modular set function maximization. Using dynamic programming, we find a deterministic policy solving the problem. We also consider two natural greedy caching policies. We evaluate our policies considering two popular stochastic geometric coverage models: the Boolean one and the Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise-Ratio one, assuming Zipf popularity distribution. Our numerical results show that the proposed deterministic policies are in general not worse than some randomized policy considered in the literature and can further improve the total hit probability in the moderately high coverage regime., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Results are presented for optimizing device-to-device communications in cellular networks, while maintaining spectral efficiency of the base-station-to-device downlink channel. We build upon established and tested stochastic geometry models of signal-to-interference ratio in wireless networks based on the Poisson point process, which incorporate random propagation effects such as fading and shadowing. A key result is a simple formula, allowing one to optimize the device-to-device spatial throughput by suitably adjusting the proportion of active devices. These results can lead to further investigation as they can be immediately applied to more sophisticated models such as studying multi-tier network models to address coverage in closed access networks., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We develop Gibbs sampling based techniques for learning the optimal content placement in a cellular network. A collection of base stations are scattered on the space, each having a cell (possibly overlapping with other cells). Mobile users request for downloads from a finite set of contents according to some popularity distribution. Each base station can store only a strict subset of the contents at a time; if a requested content is not available at any serving base station, it has to be downloaded from the backhaul. Thus, there arises the problem of optimal content placement which can minimize the download rate from the backhaul, or equivalently maximize the cache hit rate. Using similar ideas as Gibbs sampling, we propose simple sequential content update rules that decide whether to store a content at a base station based on the knowledge of contents in neighbouring base stations. The update rule is shown to be asymptotically converging to the optimal content placement for all nodes. Next, we extend the algorithm to address the situation where content popularities and cell topology are initially unknown, but are estimated as new requests arrive to the base stations. We consider location-dependent opportunistic bandwidth sharing between static and mobile downlink users in a cellular network. Each cell has some fixed number of static users. Mobile users enter the cell, move inside the cell for some time and then leave the cell. In order to provide higher data rate to mobile users, we propose to provide higher bandwidth to the mobile users at favourable times and locations, and provide higher bandwidth to the static users in other times. We formulate the problem as a long run average reward Markov decision process (MDP) where the per-step reward is a linear combination of instantaneous data volumes received by static and mobile users, and find the optimal policy. The transition structure of this MDP is not known in general. To alleviate this issue, we propose a learning algorithm based on single timescale stochastic approximation. Also, noting that the unconstrained MDP can be used to solve a constrained problem, we provide a learning algorithm based on multi-timescale stochastic approximation. The results are extended to address the issue of fair bandwidth sharing between the two classes of users. In small cell networks, high mobility of users results in frequent handoff and thus severely restricts the data rate for mobile users. To alleviate this problem, we propose to use heterogeneous, two-tier network structure where static users are served by both macro and micro base stations, whereas the mobile (i.e., moving) users are served only by macro base stations having larger cells; the idea is to prevent frequent data outage for mobile users due to handoff. We use the classical two-tier Poisson network model with different transmit powers (cf [1]), assume independent Poisson process of static users and doubly stochastic Poisson process of mobile users moving at a constant speed along infinite straight lines generated by a Poisson line process. Using stochastic geometry, we calculate the average downlink data rate of the typical static and mobile (i.e., moving) users, the latter accounted for handoff outage periods. We consider also the average throughput of these two types of users defined as their average data rates divided by the mean total number of users co-served by the same base station. We find that if the density of a homogeneous network and/or the speed of mobile users is high, it is advantageous to let the mobile users connect only to some optimal fraction of BSs to reduce the frequency of handoffs during which the connection is not assured. If a heterogeneous structure of the network is allowed, one can further jointly optimize the mean throughput of mobile and static users by appropriately tuning the powers of micro and macro base stations subject to some aggregate power constraint ensuring unchanged mean data rates of static users via the network equivalence property (see [2])., Comment: 13 pages, 5 diagrams, 2 plots, 3 images

Keeler, Ross and Xia (2016) recently derived approximation and convergence results, which imply that the point process formed from the signal strengths received by an observer in a wireless network under a general statistical propagation model can be modelled by an inhomogeneous Poisson point process on the positive real line. The basic requirement for the results to apply is that there must be a large number of transmitters with different locations and random propagation effects.The aim of this note is to apply some of the main results of Keeler, Ross and Xia (2016) in a less general but more easily applicable form to illustrate how the results can be applied in practice. We propose a model for heterogeneous cellular networks assuming a space-time Poisson process of call arrivals, independently marked by data volumes, and served by different types of base stations (having different transmission powers) represented by the superposition of independent Poisson processes on the plane. Each station applies a processor sharing policy to serve users arriving in its vicinity, modeled by the Voronoi cell perturbed by some random signal propagation effects (shadowing). Users' peak service rates depend on their signal-to-interference-and-noise ratios (SINR) with respect to the serving station. The mutual-dependence of the cells (due to the extra-cell interference) is captured via some system of cell-load equations impacting the spatial distribution of the SINR. We use this model to study in a semi-analytic way (involving only static simulations, with the temporal evolution handled by the queuing theoretic results) network performance metrics (cell loads, mean number of users) and the quality of service perceived by the users (mean throughput) served by different types of base stations. Our goal is to identify macroscopic laws regarding these performance metrics, involving averaging both over time and the network geometry. The reveled laws are validated against real field measurement in an operational network.

In this paper we propose two analytically tractable stochastic-geometric models of interference in ad-hoc networks using pure (non-slotted) Aloha as the medium access. In contrast the slotted model, the interference in pure Aloha may vary during the transmission of a tagged packet. We develop closed form expressions for the Laplace transform of the empirical average of the interference experienced during the transmission of a typical packet. Both models assume a power-law path-loss function with arbitrarily distributed fading and feature configurations of transmitters randomly located in the Euclidean plane according to a Poisson point process. Depending on the model, these configurations vary over time or are static. We apply our analysis of the interference to study the Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise Ratio (SINR) outage probability for a typical transmission in pure Aloha. We propose an analytic approach to the frequency bandwidth dimensioning problem, faced by cellular network operators who deploy/upgrade their networks in various geographical regions (countries) with an inhomogeneous urbanization. We present a model allowing one to capture fundamental relations between users' quality of service parameters (mean downlink throughput), traffic demand, the density of base station deployment, and the available frequency bandwidth. These relations depend on the applied cellular technology (3G or 4G impacting user peak bit-rate) and on the path-loss characteristics observed in different (urban, sub-urban and rural) areas. We observe that if the distance between base stations is kept inversely proportional to the distance coefficient of the path-loss function, then the performance of the typical cells of these different areas is similar when serving the same (per-cell) traffic demand. In this case, the frequency bandwidth dimensioning problem can be solved uniformly across the country applying the mean cell approach proposed in [Blaszczyszyn et al. WiOpt2014] http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/WIOPT.2014.6850355 . We validate our approach by comparing the analytical results to measurements in operational networks in various geographical zones of different countries.

In this work we consider the problem of an optimal geographic placement of content in wireless cellular networks modelled by Poisson point processes. Specifically, for the typical user requesting some particular content and whose popularity follows a given law (e.g. Zipf), we calculate the probability of finding the content cached in one of the base stations. Wireless coverage follows the usual signal-to-interference-and noise ratio (SINR) model, or some variants of it. We formulate and solve the problem of an optimal randomized content placement policy, to maximize the user's hit probability. The result dictates that it is not always optimal to follow the standard policy "cache the most popular content, everywhere". In fact, our numerical results regarding three different coverage scenarios, show that the optimal policy significantly increases the chances of hit under high-coverage regime, i.e., when the probabilities of coverage by more than just one station are high enough., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, conference

Geographic locations of cellular base stations sometimes can be well fitted with spatial homogeneous Poisson point processes. In this paper we make a complementary observation: In the presence of the log-normal shadowing of sufficiently high variance, the statistics of the propagation loss of a single user with respect to different network stations are invariant with respect to their geographic positioning, whether regular or not, for a wide class of empirically homogeneous networks. Even in perfectly hexagonal case they appear as though they were realized in a Poisson network model, i.e., form an inhomogeneous Poisson point process on the positive half-line with a power-law density characterized by the path-loss exponent. At the same time, the conditional distances to the corresponding base stations, given their observed propagation losses, become independent and log-normally distributed, which can be seen as a decoupling between the real and model geometry. The result applies also to Suzuki (Rayleigh-log-normal) propagation model. We use Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to empirically study the quality of the Poisson approximation and use it to build a linear-regression method for the statistical estimation of the value of the path-loss exponent.

Stochastic geometry models of wireless networks based on Poisson point processes are increasingly being developed with a focus on studying various signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) values. We show that the SINR values experienced by a typical user with respect to different base stations of a Poissonian cellular network are related to a specific instance of the so-called two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet process. This process has many interesting properties as well as applications in various fields. We give examples of several results proved for this process that are of immediate or potential interest in the development of analytic tools for cellular networks. Some of them simplify or are akin to certain results that are recently being developed in wireless networks literature. By doing this we hope to motivate further research and use of Poisson-Dirichlet processes in this new setting.

Based on a stationary Poisson point process, a wireless network model with random propagation effects (shadowing and/or fading) is considered in order to examine the process formed by the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) values experienced by a typical user with respect to all base stations in the down-link channel. This SINR process is completely characterized by deriving its factorial moment measures, which involve numerically tractable, explicit integral expressions. This novel framework naturally leads to expressions for the k-coverage probability, including the case of random SINR threshold values considered in multi-tier network models. While the k-coverage probabilities correspond to the marginal distributions of the order statistics of the SINR process, a more general relation is presented connecting the factorial moment measures of the SINR process to the joint densities of these order statistics. This gives a way for calculating exact values of the coverage probabilities arising in a general scenario of signal combination and interference cancellation between base stations. The presented framework consisting of mathematical representations of SINR characteristics with respect to the factorial moment measures holds for the whole domain of SINR and is amenable to considerable model extension.

With the growing importance of corporate viral marketing campaigns on online social networks, the interest in studies of influence propagation through networks is higher than ever. In a viral marketing campaign, a firm initially targets a small set of pioneers and hopes that they would influence a sizeable fraction of the population by diffusion of influence through the network. In general, any marketing campaign might fail to go viral in the first try. As such, it would be useful to have some guide to evaluate the effectiveness of the campaign and judge whether it is worthy of further resources, and in case the campaign has potential, how to hit upon a good pioneer who can make the campaign go viral. In this paper, we present a diffusion model developed by enriching the generalized random graph (a.k.a. configuration model) to provide insight into these questions. We offer the intuition behind the results on this model, rigorously proved in Blaszczyszyn & Gaurav(2013), and illustrate them here by taking examples of random networks having prototypical degree distributions - Poisson degree distribution, which is commonly used as a kind of benchmark, and Power Law degree distribution, which is normally used to approximate the real-world networks. On these networks, the members are assumed to have varying attitudes towards propagating the information. We analyze three cases, in particular - (1) Bernoulli transmissions, when a member influences each of its friend with probability p; (2) Node percolation, when a member influences all its friends with probability p and none with probability 1-p; (3) Coupon-collector transmissions, when a member randomly selects one of his friends K times with replacement. We assume that the configuration model is the closest approximation of a large online social network, when the information available about the network is very limited. The key insight offered by this study from a firm's perspective is regarding how to evaluate the effectiveness of a marketing campaign and do cost-benefit analysis by collecting relevant statistical data from the pioneers it selects. The campaign evaluation criterion is informed by the observation that if the parameters of the underlying network and the campaign effectiveness are such that the campaign can indeed reach a significant fraction of the population, then the set of good pioneers also forms a significant fraction of the population. Therefore, in such a case, the firms can even adopt the naive strategy of repeatedly picking and targeting some number of pioneers at random from the population. With this strategy, the probability of them picking a good pioneer will increase geometrically fast with the number of tries.

We consider propagation of influence on a Configuration Model, where each vertex can be influenced by any of its neighbours but in its turn, it can only influence a random subset of its neighbours. Our (enhanced) model is described by the total degree of the typical vertex, representing the total number of its neighbours and the transmitter degree, representing the number of neighbours it is able to influence. We give a condition involving the joint distribution of these two degrees, which if satisfied would allow with high probability the influence to reach a non-negligible fraction of the vertices, called a big (influenced) component, provided that the source vertex is chosen from a set of good pioneers. We show that asymptotically the big component is essentially the same, regardless of the good pioneer we choose, and we explicitly evaluate the asymptotic relative size of this component. Finally, under some additional technical assumption we calculate the relative size of the set of good pioneers. The main technical tool employed is the "fluid limit" analysis of the joint exploration of the configuration model and the propagation of the influence up to the time when a big influenced component is completed. This method was introduced in Janson & Luczak (2008) to study the giant component of the configuration model. Using this approach we study also a reverse dynamic, which traces all the possible sources of influence of a given vertex, and which by a new "duality" relation allows to characterise the set of good pioneers.

The proportionally fair sharing of the capacity of a Poisson network using Spatial-Aloha leads to closed-form performance expressions in two extreme cases: (1) the case without topology information, where the analysis boils down to a parametric optimization problem leveraging stochastic geometry; (2) the case with full network topology information, which was recently solved using shot-noise techniques. We show that there exists a continuum of adaptive controls between these two extremes, based on local stopping sets, which can also be analyzed in closed form. We also show that these control schemes are implementable, in contrast to the full information case which is not. As local information increases, the performance levels of these schemes are shown to get arbitrarily close to those of the full information scheme. The analytical results are combined with discrete event simulation to provide a detailed evaluation of the performance of this class of medium access controls.

Little's law allows to express the mean user throughput in any region of the network as the ratio of the mean traffic demand to the steady-state mean number of users in this region. Corresponding statistics are usually collected in operational networks for each cell. Using ergodic arguments and Palm theoretic formalism, we show that the global mean user throughput in the network is equal to the ratio of these two means in the steady state of the "typical cell". Here, both means account for double averaging: over time and network geometry, and can be related to the per-surface traffic demand, base-station density and the spatial distribution of the SINR. This latter accounts for network irregularities, shadowing and idling cells via cell-load equations. We validate our approach comparing analytical and simulation results for Poisson network model to real-network cell-measurements.

We consider a general heterogeneous network in which, besides general propagation effects (shadowing and/or fading), individual base stations can have different emitting powers and be subject to different parameters of Hata-like path-loss models (path-loss exponent and constant) due to, for example, varying antenna heights. We assume also that the stations may have varying parameters of, for example, the link layer performance (SINR threshold, etc). By studying the propagation processes of signals received by the typical user from all antennas marked by the corresponding antenna parameters, we show that seemingly different heterogeneous networks based on Poisson point processes can be equivalent from the point of view a typical user. These neworks can be replaced with a model where all the previously varying propagation parameters (including path-loss exponents) are set to constants while the only trade-off being the introduction of an isotropic base station density. This allows one to perform analytic comparisons of different network models via their isotropic representations. In the case of a constant path-loss exponent, the isotropic representation simplifies to a homogeneous modification of the constant intensity of the original network, thus generalizing a previous result showing that the propagation processes only depend on one moment of the emitted power and propagation effects. We give examples and applications to motivate these results and highlight an interesting observation regarding random path-loss exponents.

We present a new stochastic service model with capacity sharing and interruptions, appropriate for the evaluation of the quality of real-time streaming (RTS), like e.g. mobile TV, in wireless cellular networks. The general model takes into account multi-class Markovian process of call arrivals, (to capture different radio channel conditions, requested streaming bit-rates and durations) and allows for a general resource allocation policy saying which users are temporarily denied the requested fixed streaming bit-rates (put in outage) due to resource constraints. We give expressions for several important performance characteristics of the model, including mean time spent in outage and mean number of outage incidents for a typical user of a given class. These expressions involve only stationary probabilities of the (free) traffic demand process, which is a vector of independent Poisson random variables describing the number of users of different classes. In order to analyze RTS in 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular networks, we specify our general model assuming orthogonal user channels with the peak bit-rates close to the theoretical Shannon's bound in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, which leads to the resource constraints in a multi-rate linear form. In this setting we consider a natural class of least-effort-served-first resource allocation policies, for which the characteristics of the model can be further evaluated using Fourier analysis of Poisson variables. Within this class we identify and evaluate an optimal and a fair policy, the latter being suggested by LTE implementations. We also propose some intermediate policies, which allow to solve the optimality/fairness tradeoff caused by unequal user radio-channel conditions. Shadowing is believed to degrade the quality of service (QoS) in wireless cellular networks. Assuming log-normal shadowing, and studying mobile's path-loss with respect to the serving base station (BS) and the corresponding interference factor (the ratio of the sum of the path-gains form interfering BS's to the path-gain from the serving BS), which are two key ingredients of the analysis and design of the cellular networks, we discovered a more subtle reality. We observe, as commonly expected, that a strong variance of the shadowing increases the mean path-loss with respect to the serving BS, which in consequence, may compromise QoS. However, in some cases, an increase of the variance of the shadowing can significantly reduce the mean interference factor and, in consequence, improve some QoS metrics in interference limited systems, provided the handover policy selects the BS with the smallest path loss as the serving one. We exemplify this phenomenon, similar to stochastic resonance and related to the "single big jump principle" of the heavy-tailed log-nornal distribution, studying the blocking probability in regular, hexagonal networks in a semi-analytic manner, using a spatial version of the Erlang's loss formula combined with Kaufman-Roberts algorithm. More detailed probabilistic analysis explains that increasing variance of the log-normal shadowing amplifies the ratio between the strongest signal and all other signals thus reducing the interference. The above observations might shed new light, in particular on the design of indoor communication scenarios.

We give numerically tractable, explicit integral expressions for the distribution of the signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) experienced by a typical user in the down-link channel from the k-th strongest base stations of a cellular network modelled by Poisson point process on the plane. Our signal propagation-loss model comprises of a power-law path-loss function with arbitrarily distributed shadowing, independent across all base stations, with and without Rayleigh fading. Our results are valid in the whole domain of SINR, in particular for SINR<1, where one observes multiple coverage. In this latter aspect our paper complements previous studies reported in [Dhillon et al. JSAC 2012].

In this chapter we review some examples, methods, and recent results involving comparison of clustering properties of point processes. Our approach is founded on some basic observations allowing us to consider void probabilities and moment measures as two complementary tools for capturing clustering phenomena in point processes. As might be expected, smaller values of these characteristics indicate less clustering. Also, various global and local functionals of random geometric models driven by point processes admit more or less explicit bounds involving void probabilities and moment measures, thus aiding the study of impact of clustering of the underlying point process. When stronger tools are needed, directional convex ordering of point processes happens to be an appropriate choice, as well as the notion of (positive or negative) association, when comparison to the Poisson point process is considered. We explain the relations between these tools and provide examples of point processes admitting them. Furthermore, we sketch some recent results obtained using the aforementioned comparison tools, regarding percolation and coverage properties of the Boolean model, the SINR model, subgraph counts in random geometric graphs, and more generally, U-statistics of point processes. We also mention some results on Betti numbers for \v{C}ech and Vietoris-Rips random complexes generated by stationary point processes. A general observation is that many of the results derived previously for the Poisson point process generalise to some "sub-Poisson" processes, defined as those clustering less than the Poisson process in the sense of void probabilities and moment measures, negative association or dcx-ordering., Comment: 44 pages, 4 figures

We consider an edge-weighted uniform random graph with a given degree sequence (Repeated Configuration Model) which is a useful approximation for many real-world networks. It has been observed that the vertices which are separated from the rest of the graph by a distance exceeding certain threshold play an important role in determining some global properties of the graph like diameter, flooding time etc., in spite of being statistically rare. We give a convergence result for the distribution of the number of such far-out vertices. We also make a conjecture about how this relates to the longest edge of the minimal spanning tree on the graph under consideration.

In our basic model, we study a stationary Poisson pattern of nodes on a line embedded in an independent planar Poisson field of interfering nodes. Assuming slotted Aloha and the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio capture condition, with the usual power-law path loss model and Rayleigh fading, we explicitly evaluate several local and end-to-end performance characteristics related to the nearest-neighbor packet relaying on this line, and study their dependence on the model parameters (the density of relaying and interfering nodes, Aloha tuning and the external noise power). Our model can be applied in two cases: the first use is for vehicular ad-hoc networks, where vehicles are randomly located on a straight road. The second use is to study a typical route traced in a (general) planar ad-hoc network by some routing mechanism. The approach we have chosen allows us to quantify the non-efficiency of long-distance routing in pure ad-hoc networks and evaluate a possible remedy for it in the form of additional fixed relaying nodes, called road-side units in a vehicular network. It also allows us to consider a more general field of interfering nodes and study the impact of the clustering of its nodes the routing performance. As a special case of a field with more clustering than the Poison field, we consider a Poisson-line field of interfering nodes, in which all the nodes are randomly located on random straight lines. The comparison to our basic model reveals a paradox: clustering of interfering nodes decreases the outage probability of a single (typical) transmission on the route, but increases the mean end-to-end delay.

An almost ubiquitous assumption made in the stochastic-analytic study of the quality of service in cellular networks is Poisson distribution of base stations. It is usually justified by various irregularities in the real placement of base stations, which ideally should form the hexagonal pattern. We provide a different and rigorous argument justifying the Poisson assumption under sufficiently strong log-normal shadowing observed in the network, in the evaluation of a natural class of the typical-user service-characteristics including its SINR. Namely, we present a Poisson-convergence result for a broad range of stationary (including lattice) networks subject to log-normal shadowing of increasing variance. We show also for the Poisson model that the distribution of all these characteristics does not depend on the particular form of the additional fading distribution. Our approach involves a mapping of 2D network model to 1D image of it "perceived" by the typical user. For this image we prove our convergence result and the invariance of the Poisson limit with respect to the distribution of the additional shadowing or fading. Moreover, we present some new results for Poisson model allowing one to calculate the distribution function of the SINR in its whole domain. We use them to study and optimize the mean energy efficiency in cellular networks.

We are interested in phase transitions in certain percolation models on point processes and their dependence on clustering properties of the point processes. We show that point processes with smaller void probabilities and factorial moment measures than the stationary Poisson point process exhibit non-trivial phase transition in the percolation of some coverage models based on level-sets of additive functionals of the point process. Examples of such point processes are determinantal point processes, some perturbed lattices, and more generally, negatively associated point processes. Examples of such coverage models are $k$-coverage in the Boolean model (coverage by at least $k$ grains) and SINR-coverage (coverage if the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio is large). In particular, we answer in affirmative the hypothesis of existence of phase transition in the percolation of $k$-faces in the \v{C}ech simplicial complex (called also clique percolation) on point processes which cluster less than the Poisson process. We also construct a Cox point process, which is "more clustered" than the Poisson point process and whose Boolean model percolates for arbitrarily small radius. This shows that clustering (at least, as detected by our specific tools) does not always "worsen" percolation, as well as that upper-bounding this clustering by a Poisson process is a consequential assumption for the phase transition to hold., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure. In this paper, we propose a new comparison tool for spatial homogeneity of point processes, based on the joint examination of void probabilities and factorial moment measures. We prove that determinantal and permanental processes, as well as, more generally, negatively and positively associated point processes are comparable in this sense to the Poisson point process of the same mean measure. We provide some motivating results and preview further ones, showing that the new tool is relevant in the study of macroscopic, percolative properties of point processes. This new comparison is also implied by the directionally convex ($dcx$ ordering of point processes, which has already been shown to be relevant to comparison of spatial homogeneity of point processes. For this latter ordering, using a notion of lattice perturbation, we provide a large monotone spectrum of comparable point processes, ranging from periodic grids to Cox processes, and encompassing Poisson point process as well. They are intended to serve as a platform for further theoretical and numerical studies of clustering, as well as simple models of random point patterns to be used in applications where neither complete regularity northe total independence property are not realistic assumptions., Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure. We consider a class of point processes (pp), which we call {\em sub-Poisson}; these are pp that can be directionally-convexly ($dcx$) dominated by some Poisson pp. The $dcx$ order has already been shown useful in comparing various point process characteristics, including Ripley's and correlation functions as well as shot-noise fields generated by pp, indicating in particular that smaller in the $dcx$ order processes exhibit more regularity (less clustering, less voids) in the repartition of their points. Using these results, in this paper we study the impact of the $dcx$ ordering of pp on the properties of two continuum percolation models, which have been proposed in the literature to address macroscopic connectivity properties of large wireless networks. As the first main result of this paper, we extend the classical result on the existence of phase transition in the percolation of the Gilbert's graph (called also the Boolean model), generated by a homogeneous Poisson pp, to the class of homogeneous sub-Poisson pp. We also extend a recent result of the same nature for the SINR graph, to sub-Poisson pp. Finally, as examples we show that the so-called perturbed lattices are sub-Poisson. We analyze a class of Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise-Ratio (SINR) random graphs. These random graphs arise in the modeling packet transmissions in wireless networks. In contrast to previous studies on the SINR graphs, we consider both a space and a time dimension. The spatial aspect originates from the random locations of the network nodes in the Euclidean plane. The time aspect stems from the random transmission policy followed by each network node and from the time variations of the wireless channel characteristics. The combination of these random space and time aspects leads to fluctuations of the SINR experienced by the wireless channels, which in turn determine the progression of packets in space and time in such a network. This paper studies optimal paths in such wireless networks in terms of first passage percolation on this random graph. We establish both "positive" and "negative" results on the associated time constant. The latter determines the asymptotics of the minimum delay required by a packet to progress from a source node to a destination node when the Euclidean distance between the two tends to infinity. The main negative result states that this time constant is infinite on the random graph associated with a Poisson point process under natural assumptions on the wireless channels. The main positive result states that when adding a periodic node infrastructure of arbitrarily small intensity to the Poisson point process, the time constant is positive and finite.

Directionally convex ($dcx$) ordering is a tool for comparison of dependence structure of random vectors that also takes into account the variability of the marginal distributions. When extended to random fields it concerns comparison of all finite dimensional distributions. Viewing locally finite measures as non-negative fields of measure-values indexed by the bounded Borel subsets of the space, in this paper we formulate and study the $dcx$ ordering of random measures on locally compact spaces. We show that the $dcx$ order is preserved under some of the natural operations considered on random measures and point processes, such as deterministic displacement of points, independent superposition and thinning as well as independent, identically distributed marking. Further operations such as position dependent marking and displacement of points though do not preserve the $dcx$ order on all point processes, are shown to preserve the order on Cox point processes. We also examine the impact of $dcx$ order on the second moment properties, in particular on clustering and on Palm distributions. Comparisons of Ripley's functions, pair correlation functions as well as examples seem to indicate that point processes higher in $dcx$ order cluster more. As the main result, we show that non-negative integral shot-noise fields with respect to $dcx$ ordered random measures inherit this ordering from the measures. Numerous applications of this result are shown, in particular to comparison of various Cox processes and some performance measures of wireless networks, in both of which shot-noise fields appear as key ingredients. We consider a hybrid wireless sensor network with regular and transmit-only sensors. The transmit-only sensors do not have receiver circuit, hence are cheaper and less energy consuming, but their transmissions cannot be coordinated. Regular sensors, also called cluster-heads, are responsible for receiving information from transmit-only sensors and forwarding it to sinks. The main goal of such a hybrid network is to reduce the cost of deployment while achieving some performance constraints (minimum coverage, sensing rate, etc). In this paper we are interested in the communication between transmit-only sensors and cluster-heads. We develop a detailed analytical model of the physical and MAC layer using tools from queuing theory and stochastic geometry. (The MAC model, that we call Erlang's loss model with interference, might be of independent interest as adequate for any non-slotted; i.e., unsynchronized, wireless communication channel.) We give an explicit formula for the frequency of successful packet reception by a cluster-head, given sensors' locations. We further define packet admission policies at a cluster-head, and we calculate the optimal policies for different performance criteria. Finally we show that the proposed hybrid network, using the optimal policies, can achieve substantial cost savings as compared to conventional architectures.
