This study aimed to investigate distance education practices in higher education during the pandemic, focusing on lived experiences, and proposing a policy decision framework for future distance education in similar conditions. Additionally, the study aimed to establish a design framework for an Emergency Action Plan for similar crisis periods. In the study, a case study was used to provide a detailed examination of the current situation's characteristics. The study group consisted of 63 administrators from 34 universities who actively participated in decision-making during the pandemic. Data were collected through 11 online focus group interviews, and the Miles-Huberman Model was used for analysis. The study proposed a policy decision framework for distance education in the post-pandemic period, consisting of 11 headings such as blended learning, open course materials, and Distance Education Center structuring. Additionally, the study presented an emergency action plan framework consisting of six components, including keeping the technological infrastructure working and supporting face-to-face courses with distance education. This study provides valuable insights for universities in preparing for potential crises and improving their distance education practices.

Digital games have become more involved in our lives and entertainment culture with the development of technology. Digital games, which individuals of all ages play and derive great enjoyment from at the the same time, have been actively used in educational activities. However, it is seen that the games used in the education process are mostly developed and marketed by different institutions. Thus, the aim of this study is to have secondary school students design and code the games that will be used in the effective citizenship learning area so that they can become more active in their own learning experiences and become digital producers as well as digital consumers. Considering this purpose, an explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed-methods research designs, was adopted in the study. After the data were obtained by using a quasi-experimental design in the quantitative aspect of the study, student opinions were taken to explain these data in depth, and the study was supported by the qualitative data. The qualitative data were collected with the Effective Citizenship Learning Domain Academic Achievement Test (ECLDAAT), and the quantitative data were gathered with student interviews. The quantitative data of the study were analyzed using the SPSS program and appropriate analyses. Student interviews were analyzed using content analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that educational digital games coded and designed by students had significant effects on learning. In addition, the students stated at the end of the implementation that the lesson was more fun, they were more motivated, and they boosted their learning during the implementation process.

This research is a case study aiming to reveal the experiences of art students towards the activity of "reproduction through appropriation". During the activity process, students were firstly informed about appropriation and the art of appropriation, especially the works in which two works of art were appropriated by integrating them, and each student was asked to identify two works of art to be appropriated. Students made sketches by establishing relational links between the two works they chose. In the last stage, students were expected to make a new artistic production. In this research, which was conducted with the participation of 8 students attending the art studio course, the experiences of the students regarding the process formed the unit of analysis. Worksheets, process evaluation form and artworks were used as data sources. As a result of the research, it was identified that the students were able to produce thoughts about the concepts emerging with appropriation and appropriation art and question this art practice. The students made an effort to integrate the artistic elements in the two works they used for appropriation in an appropriate way and to create the best visual fiction, and they were able to bring a new interpretation by making use of the artists' application of the paint technique and their understanding of colour in the appropriated works. They also realised that the artwork they produced was only a tool to force themselves into the artistic creation process and to gain artistic knowledge and skills. In other words, they developed an awareness of the limits of utilising the works in the history of art to ensure originality in their future artworks. It is possible to say that making use of the appropriation method in art studio courses will contribute to the artistic development of students.

This study aimed to investigate the genetic susceptibility of the Matriks Metalloproteinaz-3 (MMP3) (rs3025058) gene variant allele and genotype distribution in male football players who actively participate in professional leagues and have undergone a minimum of two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgeries. The study comprised 44 male football players who had undergone a minimum of two ACL surgeries and 61 male football players who had not undergone any ACL surgery. Participants’ blood samples were collected and DNA was extracted. Allele types were determined by analyzing the MMP3 (rs3025058) variant gene polymorphism using the restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method with appropriate primers and restriction enzymes. The results revealed no statistical significant differences in genotype distribution for 6A/6A, 5A/6A and 5A/5A (p = 0.736) or in 6A-allele frequency distribution between the control (CON) and ACL groups (Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.119, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.637–1.965; p = 0.318). The analysis of both dominant (6A/6A vs. 5A/6A + 5A/5A) and recessive (6A/6A + 5A/6A vs. 5A/5A) models for the inheritance of the minor allele did not yield statistically significant difference, with odds ratios (OR) of 0.647 (95% CI: 0.283–1.478; p = 0.408) and 1.472 (95% CI: 0.506–4.281; p = 0.584), respectively. This study investigated the impact of MMP3 gene polymorphisms in ACL injuries, uncovering an intricate interplay between genetic and environmental factors that contribute to injury susceptibility. While some studies suggest potential links between MMP3 variants and ACL risks, the available information is inconclusive and necessitates additional confirmation in other demographics. Continued research is crucial to develop effective, personalized injury prevention strategies based on robust genetic markers.

The research aims to examine augmented reality (AR) technology during the pre-school years. For this purpose, we created activities with AR cards and compared them to activities with other materials. We designed the study as a case study, a qualitative research model. We used the convenience sampling method to select the study group and the criterion sampling method from the selection methods. The study group consists of eighteen children, ten boys, and eight girls attending kindergarten. Children are between 54 and 77 months. We gathered data through semi-structured interviews, observation, and audio and video recordings. We used the content analysis method to analyze the data, creating codes and themes. Findings show that using AR technology in the pre-school period attracts children's attention, gives them a sense of reality, embodies the content, supports peer relationships positively, and allows children to participate in activities willingly and focus on the activity. Furthermore, we have seen that AR technology can be a distraction. When comparing AR technology to other materials, we discovered that children prefer materials that directly connect to real life. They prefer materials that contain AR to materials that do not. We presented recommendations for the use of AR in the pre-school period and future research.

This study aimed to assess the moderating role of gender in the relationship between childhood abuse and mental disorders in the population of a country that has been little studied. This research was designed by the correlational model, one of the quantitative research designs. 272 university students attending a state university in Turkey participated in the research. For sample selection, the convenience sampling method was used. As a result of analyses within the scope of the present study, it was concluded that gender had a moderating effect on the relationship between sexual abuse and somatisation, emotional abuse and negative self and physical neglect and hostility. This finding may help clinicians and researchers in providing optimal health services.

Air-dried density, weight loss (WL), impact bending strength (IBS), Shore-D hardness, and thermal conductivity values were determined for heat-treated poplar (Populus nigra L.) and beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) wood and compared with those for untreated samples. The test samples were heat-treated at 140, 160, 180, and 200 °C for 2 h. The results showed that density decreased and WL increased with increasing temperature for all temperatures. Additionally, during the heat treatment, the IBS increased in beech wood samples at 140 °C, but at higher temperatures, these values gradually decreased in both wood species. The highest decline in IBS values, found at a temperature of 200 °C, was 66.5% for beech and 55.7% for poplar. The Shore-D hardness of both wood species increased after heat treatment and regarding beech wood, the hardness increasing rate at temperature at 140 °C, 160 °C, 180 °C and 200 °C, 8.94%, 14.19%, 8.27% and 11.7%, respectively according to control samples. Regarding poplar wood, hardness increasing rates were 6.20% at 140 °C, 4.41% at 160°C, 5.88% at 180°C and 5.31% at 200°C according to control samples. The thermal conductivity of poplar and beech wood samples decreased after heat treatment, except for samples heat treated at 160 °C.

Metal nanoparticles that are widely studied in optoelectronics, catalysis, medicine, and sensors offer remarkable optical and electronic properties. To address the cost and environmental concerns associated with their synthesis, this study employs an environmentally friendly method using Laureus nobilis extract to produce silver and zinc nanoparticles, which are prominent in nanotechnology. This study includes investigations of factors such as reaction time, AgNO3/laurel ratio, Zn(Ac)2·H2O/laurel ratio and temperature in nanoparticle biosynthesis to optimize the process. The next stage was set to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of these nanoparticles, specifically against the methylene blue dye under dark and UV light conditions. Parameters such as pollutant decomposition, degradation rate, catalyst stability, and nanoparticle recovery were analysed. Structural characterization of the obtained nanoparticles was performed using UV-Vis, FTIR, SEM, and XRD techniques. The photocatalytic results showed significant degradation percentages for LB-AgNP (silver nanoparticles synthesized with Laureus nobilis extract) (97.5%) and LB-ZnNP (zinc nanoparticles synthesized with Laureus nobilis extract) (90.9%). LB-ZnNP showed superior performance. Therefore, LB-AgNP and LB-ZnNP are promising photocatalysts for water purification and the elimination of toxic organic pollutants.

Objective: There are insufficient data in the literature concerning whether cellular changes in tissue are reflected in blood circulation in granulomatous infections, such as zoonotic brucellosis. In this study, we compared laboratory parameters between patients with brucella (BEO) and non-brucella epididymo-orchitis (NBEO). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 84 patients with BEO and 92 with NBEO who presented to six medical centers between 2017 and 2021. Results: The median age of the patients was 41 (interquartile range: 27-61) years. In the multivariate analysis, the presence of abdominal pain (p=0.003), the percentage of lymphocytes (p=0.012) and the percentage of monocytes (p=0.029) were significantly higher in the BEO group than in the NBEO group. In addition, the percentage of neutrophils (p=0.001) was significantly lower in the BEO group than in the NBEO group. In the receiver operating characteristic analysis, the percentage of lymphocytes had an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.808 at a cut-off point of >22.1%, the percentage of monocytes had an AUC value of 0.745 at a cut-off point of >7.7%, and the percentage of neutrophils had an AUC value of 0.746 at a cut-off point of

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the quality of YouTube videos on penile enlargement surgery and the scholarly profiles of surgeons. Materials and Methods: A YouTube search was conducted using the keyword “penile enlargement surgery”. Of the first 200 videos from the search results, 66 that met the study criteria were included in the analyses. Two urologists scored each video using the DISCERN score, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) score, and the global quality scale (GQS) in a double-blind manner. After the video quality scores were determined, the number of publications and h-indexes of surgeons were obtained from Google Scholar. Results: Of the videos, 31 (46.9%) were uploaded by plastic surgeons and 35 (53.1%) by urologists. The median duration of the videos was 4.1 min (interquartile range: 1-8.5) minutes. Eighteen (27.2%) videos had low quality, 9 (13.6%) had medium quality, and 39 (59.1%) had high quality. Abstract Background This study aims to assess the hand hygiene behavior of nursing students and identify the factors influencing this behavior through the “Scale for Assessment Hand Washing Behavior in the Frame of Theory of Planned Behaviour (SAHBTPB)”. Methods This descriptive and cross-sectional study was undertaken at the nursing departments of the university’s faculty of health sciences in İzmir, Turkey between 2021 and 2022. A total of 240 nursing students were recruited as participants for this study. Data were collected with the SAHBTPB. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and correlation analysis in the SPSS 21.0 program (p .05). Conclusion The mean scores of nursing students on the SAHBTPB were found to be at a good level. The sub-dimension “intention” was identified as an effective factor in predicting the hand hygiene behavior of the students. The findings have the potential to positively impact nursing education by increasing awareness among students and offering valuable insights for nurses and educators.

Background . In the early stages of severe burn cases, an increase in serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level and a decrease in serum albumin level can be observed. Objective . This study aimed to investigate whether the CRP/albumin ratio at the time of hospital admission in children exposed to severe burns would be an indicator for bacterial growth at the wound site. Method . A total of 137 pediatric patients who were treated in our hospital’s burn center due to third-degree burns of 30% or more of their body between January 2019 and October 2023 were included in the study. Results . The mean age was 3.69 ± 4.16 years. CRP/albumin ratio was found to be an independent risk factor for culture positivity (odds ratio: 1.162; P = .01). Conclusion . High CRP/albumin ratio in children with severe burns may provide important information about the development of wound colonization or infection, most likely due to prolonged hospital stay.

This study explores MgB2 as a reinforcing agent in electroless deposition on AZ91 magnesium alloy substrates, evaluating its impact on coating properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the amorphous Ni-B coating masks initial magnesium peaks, while MgB2 enhances MgB2O(OH)6, MgB2O5, MgO, and MgB2xOy oxide phases. SEM images illustrate morphological shifts from cauliflower-like Ni-B structures to dendritic and fibrous MgB2 forms, with higher MgB2 concentrations leading to granular structures with randomly oriented crystallites resembling platelets, indicating increased magnesium content. MgB2-reinforced Ni-B coatings exhibited higher hardness than the substrate but lower than as-deposited Ni-B. Friction coefficients initially decreased with Ni-B, increased significantly with 0.1 g MgB2, and decreased with higher reinforcements, remaining higher than substrate and as-deposited Ni-B. MgB2 reinforcement increased surface roughness, causing local agglomerations in 0.5 g MgB2 coatings. Contact angle measurements demonstrated enhanced hydrophilicity due to MgB2's superhydrophilic properties influenced by surface roughness. Antibacterial tests revealed superior properties with 0.1 g MgB2, suggesting a transition to MgB2-enriched structures and influencing material properties. While Ni-B/MgB2 coatings improved over substrate, further research is needed to optimize parameters and understand stabilizer effects. These coatings also exhibited superhydrophilicity and promising antibacterial properties, suggesting potential in advanced surface engineering applications.

It is an important research topic to what extent the training received by the prospective teachers in order to have positive attitudes towards the handicapped is successful. This study aims to evaluate the effect of physical education and sports course for the handicapped on the attitudes of sports science students towards the handicapped. In the study, the "Attitude Toward Disabled Persons (ATDP) Scale", which was developed by Yuker and Block (1986) and adapted to Turkish by Özyürek (2006), was used as a data collection tool. The reliability coefficient of the scale was 0.67-0.83, and the test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.76. A total of 76 students from Bülent Ecevit University School of Physical Education and Sports (n = 40) and Düzce University Faculty of Sport Sciences (n = 36) formed the study group who taking physical education and sports courses for the handicapped in the 2017-2018 academic year. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and independent samples t-test were used to analyze the data. Descriptive analyzes were conducted to determine the level of attitudes of the participants towards people who were handicapped. As a result of the research, it was determined that the attitude scores of the study group towards the handicapped were higher for the participants whose school type is faculty than those of the college. A difference in other parameters could not be detected.

Abstract Introduction Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are life-threatening acute mucocutaneous disorders usually triggered by drugs. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the factors affecting mortality in patients with SJS-TEN. Methods Our study is a retrospective cohort study, analyzing data collected from a total of 12 tertiary care centers between April 2012 and April 2022. Results The study included 59 males and 107 females, a total of 166 patients, with an average age of 50.91 ± 21.25 years. Disease classification was TEN in 50% of cases, SJS in 33.1%, and SJS-TEN overlap in 16.9%. The average SCORTEN within the first 24 h was 2.44 ± 1.42. Supportive care was provided to 99.4% of patients. The most commonly used systemic immunomodulatory treatments were systemic steroids (84.3%), IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) (49.3%), and cyclosporine (38.6%). Plasmapheresis was administered to five patients. While 66.3% of patients were discharged, 24.1% resulted in exitus. Our comparative analysis of survivors and deceased patients found no effect of systemic steroids, IVIG, and cyclosporine treatments on mortality. Univariate analysis revealed that the SCORTEN scores on days 1 and 3 as well as the rates of detachment at the onset and during follow-up were significantly higher in deceased patients compared to survivors. The rates of fever, positive blood cultures, and systemic antibiotic use were higher in deceased patients compared to survivors. The presence of comorbidities, diabetes, and malignancy were significantly more common in deceased patients. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that over SCORTEN 2, the mortality risk exponentially rose with each SCORTEN increment, culminating in an 84-fold increase in mortality at SCORTEN 5–6 (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 13.902–507.537, p

Objective: It was aimed to evaluate the phobia levels of COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) in medical staff working in the pandemic service and intensive care service and to examine its relationship with psychosocial impact levels. Material and Method: The study included 100 people working in the pandemic service and intensive care units in the first year of the pandemic. Sociodemographic Data Form, COVID-19 Pandemic Psychosocial Impact Scale (CPPIS) and COVID-19 Phobia Scale (CPS) were administered to all participants. Results: The mean age of the participants was 32.5±7.4 years and 74% of them were women. Of them 29% were doctors, 52% were nurses, 19% were allied health personnel and 66% worked in the service, 29% in the intensive care unit and 5% in both. There were very strong correlations between the CPS and the CPPIS total score, the death anxiety and anxious thoughts subscale scores. A strong positive correlation was found between the CPS and CPPIS subscales scores including close relationships, functionality and somatic symptoms. A significant positive correlation was found between CPS and CPPIS scores and the duration of working in the pandemic service and intensive care unit. Conclusion: It was thought that as choranophobia increased in medical staffs working in the pandemic service, their psychosocial effects also increased. It has been thought that reducing the working time in the service and/or intensive care unit during the pandemic, performing short-term rotations, may reduce the level of psychosocial impact and even be protective in terms of mental health of medical staff.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that may begin in early childhood and continue into adolescence and adulthood and are incompatible with the developmental level of the individual. Most children with ADHD are at risk of facing significant academic problems throughout their educational life. In recent studies aiming to reveal the causes of academic problems experienced by children with ADHD, academic problems have been associated with the difficulties in reading and listening comprehension skills of children with ADHD. The relatively common prevalence of ADHD, the extent of academic problems experienced by children with ADHD, and the lack of clarity about reading difficulties require further examination of the relationship between ADHD and reading and listening comprehension skills, which are often based on the same language and cognitive skills. Listening comprehension, which is defined as the ability to understand, interpret, organise and evaluate the ideas and thoughts in a speech heard or a text read aloud, is one of the most important early literacy skills necessary for the ultimate goal of reading, which is reading comprehension. In this review study, listening comprehension skills of children with ADHD were discussed together with the literature.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the "patience training program" on the patience and life satisfaction levels of university students. The study was organized as a pre-test, post-test experiment and control group design. For a total of 30 students from which were 17 in the control group and 17 in the experimental group, patience training was given for 5 weeks. The "Patient Scale" developed by Schnitker (2010) and adapted to Turkish by Eliüsük and Arslan (2016) and the "Life Satisfaction Scale" developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen and Griffin (1985) and adapted to Turkish by Dagli and Baysal (2016) were used as a data collection tool in the study. The "Wilcoxon" test was used for the comparison of in-group differences in the analysis of obtained data and the "Mann-Whitney U" test was used in examining the differences between the two groups. As a result of the study, it was observed that the patience and life satisfaction average scores of students in the experimental group receiving "patience training" increased significantly, while there was no significant difference in the patience and life satisfaction averages scores of the control group students.

This study aims to investigate the effect of different formats of emotionally designed educational animations in terms of the emotional worthiness of the material, retention and transfer, intrinsic motivation, subject interest and cognitive load. In this direction, an experimental research approach was adopted. Five emotionally diverged animations were developed for the study, one of which was designed without adding any appealing illustrations. Animations were about the life cycle of low mass stars and was developed by researchers under the supervision of an animation expert. With one control and four treatment groups, experiment was carried out with the participation of 256 students at a state university in Turkey. Data were gathered using Turkish adaptation of Subject Interest Scale, Intrinsic Motivation Scale, one-item Subjective Cognitive Load Scale, and a retention test, a transfer tests and an emotional experience survey which were developed by the researchers. Turkish adaptation process of Subject Interest Scale and Intrinsic Motivation Scale were also conducted by the researchers. Findings showed that two of the animations, both of which included character animations and one of which was enhanced by an introduction music and emotionally complementary sound effects, were emotionally effective. According to the results, emotionally effective animations had positive effects on transfer, intrinsic motivation and subject interest while no effect was found in terms of retention and cognitive load.
