From being a concept questioning the core of psychiatric knowledge and practice, recovery has been adopted as a guiding vison for mental health policy and practice by different local, national, and international organizations. The aim of this article is to contextualize the different understandings of recovery and its psychiatrization through the emergence of an individualizing and de-contextualized definition which have gained a dominant position. It ends with an attempt to formulate a new definition of recovery which integrates people in their social context. Research results from various follow-up studies showing the possibility of recovery from severe mental distress have stressed the importance of societal, social and relational factors as well of the person's own agency when facing their distress and reactions from their environment. These researches were published in the 1970s and 80s; a period of struggle for liberation from colonialism, of struggle by women and black people for their civil rights, and a time of de-institutionalization of services directed toward the poor, elderly, handicapped, prisoners, and people with mental health problems. Recovery research pointed at the central role of individuals in their recovery journey and it was understood as a personal process in a social context. However, with neo-liberal political agenda, the personal role of individuals and their own responsibility for their well-being was stressed, and contextual understandings and the role of social, material and cultural changes to promote recovery faded away. Thus, during recent decades recovery has been mostly defined as an individualistic journey of changing the persons and their perception of their situation, but not of changing this situation. Contextual aspects are almost absent. The most quoted definition accepts the limits posed by an illness-based model. This kind of definition might be a reason for the wide acceptance of a phenomenon that was initially experienced as a break with the bio-medical paradigm. Recently, this dominant individualized understanding of recovery has been criticized by service users, clinicians and researchers, making possible a redefinition of recovery as a social process in material and cultural contexts.

Masteroppgave i psykisk helsearbeid- Universitetet i Agder 2010 This study is a qualitative study of a mental health promotion intervention in a secondary school in Vest Agder, Norway. In this intervention clinicians from Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Sørlandet sykehus visits ordinary school classes and facilitates an open dialogue on various topics of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate and describe this intervention through an exploring of the students experience and understanding of it. The data of the study has consisted of 59 texts written by students who participated. The data was analyzed through a phenomenological hermeneutical method with the purpose of describing and understand the initiative on basis of the students own descriptions, understanding and experience. The study shows that many students have a positive experience. They expressed that these dialogues in the class have contributed to the students open up to each other, that thoughts and feelings arise, and that the cohesion of the class is increased. Considering the possible mental health promoting aspects of this intervention perhaps the students’ descriptions of the dialogues having led them to think different (increased their reflection) and that the dialogues have strengthened cohesion of the class, seems particularly important. The students’ description of their increased reflection is consistent with – and confirms the vision behind the intervention. The students descriptions of strengthened cohesion is an aspect of the initiative that not equally have been an explicit goal. It seems that students' descriptions are largely reflected in metaphorical expressions like opening up, put forward thoughts and ideas, come closer to each other. On the basis of metaphor theory, dialogue philosophy and ethics of proximity this study examine whether such metaphorical concepts, firstly, seem to give shape and structure to our experience and understanding of an interpersonal phenomenon like these dialogues in the class, and secondly, may represent a meaningful understanding of the dynamics of these dialogues

Bakgrunn: Ifølge forskning innen både samtalebasert psykoterapi, psykiatriske institusjoner og lokalbasert psykisk helsearbeid, har kvaliteten på relasjonen mellom den profesjonelle og tjenestebrukeren stor betydning for tjenestebrukerens utbytte av hjelpen som gis. Hensikt: Hensikten med denne studien var å få kunnskap om profesjonelle relasjoner i bofellesskap for mennesker med alvorlige rus- og/eller psykiske problemer, med fokus på hva som kan erfares som hjelpsomt i en slik relasjon. Metoder: Ved hjelp av individuelle intervju ble sju beboere intervjuet om en relasjon til en ansatt de selv opplevde at var til hjelp. I neste omgang ble de beskrevne ansatte intervjuet om den samme relasjonen. Alle intervjuene ble transkribert og analysert ved hjelp av tematisk analyse. Funn: De studerte hjelpsomme relasjonene i bofellesskap innen psykisk helse og rus hadde mye til felles med andre hjelpsomme profesjonelle relasjoner. De lignet på vennskap, blant annet ved å være preget av gjensidighet. Denne studiens funn vektlegger imidlertid betydningen av at ansatte gjorde en rekke handlinger i møte med, sammen med, for og på vegne av beboerne. Dessuten hadde relasjonene og beboerne også en betydning for de ansatte. Det var noe ved den enkelte beboer som hadde vekket lysten til å hjelpe, og de ansatte opplevde at relasjonen hadde verdi for dem selv. Videre fant vi at bilen, både som hverdagsarena og som et særegent samværsrom, kunne ha relasjonsstyrkende betydning, både ved å invitere til et hverdagslig samvær og ved å gi den ansatte en mulighet til å gjøre beboeren en tjeneste. Drøftinger og konklusjoner: Studien utfyller tidligere relasjonsfokuserte studier innen psykisk helse- og rusarbeid på flere måter: For det første viser den at kjennetegn på hjelpsomme relasjoner i andre psykisk helse- og ruskontekster også gjelder i kommunale bofellesskap. For det andre framheves betydningen av ansattes handlinger på en tydeligere måte enn i tidligere forskning. For det tredje bekreftet de ansatte beboernes opplevde gjensidighet på en konkret måte, som igjen utfyller tidligere studiers funn knyttet til opplevd gjensidighet i profesjonelle relasjoner. Videre utfordres tradisjonell profesjonsforståelse, blant annet ved at de ansattes utbytte av å være i en bestemt profesjonell relasjon løftes fram. I forlengelsen av dette, stilles det spørsmål ved recoveryorienterte idealer om selvstendighet og uavhengighet, fordi studiens funn knyttet til det gjensidige i relasjonene minner oss om at vi alle er mennesker som står i et gjensidig avhengighetsforhold til hverandre. Til slutt belyser studien at bilen som framkomstmiddel og sted for samvær, og bilkjøring som hjelpsom handling kan ha et relasjonsstyrkende og recoveryfremmende potensial som bør utforskes nærmere.
