The Goos-H\"anchen (GH) shift describes a phenomenon in which a specularly-reflected beam is laterally translated along the reflecting surface such that the incident and reflected rays no longer intersect at the surface. Using a neutron spin-echo technique and a specially-designed magnetic multilayer mirror, we have measured the relative phase between the reflected up and down neutron spin states in total reflection. The relative GH shift calculated from this phase shows a strong resonant enhancement at a particular incident neutron wavevector, which is due to a waveguiding effect in one of the magnetic layers. Calculations based on the observed phase difference between the neutron states indicate a propagation distance along the waveguide layer of 0.65 mm for the spin-down state, which we identify with the magnitude of the giant GH shift. The existence of a physical GH shift is confirmed by the observation of neutron absorption in the waveguide layer. We propose ways in which our experimental method may be exploited for neutron quantum-enhanced sensing of thin magnetic layers.

MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is a spinel based on magnetic V$^{3+}$ ions which host both spin ($S=1$) and orbital ($l_{eff}=1$) moments. Owing to the underlying pyrochlore coordination of the magnetic sites, the spins in MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ only antiferromagnetically order once the frustrating interactions imposed by the $Fd\overline{3}m$ lattice are broken through an orbitally-driven structural distortion at T$_{S}$ $\simeq$ 60 K. Consequently, a N\'eel transition occurs at T$_{N}$ $\simeq$ 40 K. Low temperature spatial ordering of the electronic orbitals is fundamental to both the structural and magnetic properties, however considerable discussion on whether it can be described by complex or real orbital ordering is ambiguous. We apply neutron spectroscopy to resolve the nature of the orbital ground state and characterize hysteretic spin-orbital correlations using x-ray and neutron diffraction. Neutron spectroscopy finds multiple excitation bands and we parameterize these in terms of a multi-level (or excitonic) theory based on the orbitally degenerate ground state. Meaningful for the orbital ground state, we report an "optical-like" mode at high energies that we attribute to a crystal-field-like excitation from the spin-orbital $j_{eff}$=2 ground state manifold to an excited $j_{eff}$=1 energy level. We parameterize the magnetic excitations in terms of a Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling and local crystalline electric field distortions resulting from deviations from perfect octahedra surrounding the V$^{3+}$ ions. We suggest that this provides compelling evidence for complex orbital order in MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$. We then apply the consequences of this model to understand hysteretic effects in the magnetic diffuse scattering where we propose that MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ displays a high temperature orbital memory of the low temperature spin order., Comment: 21 pages and 13 figures

In the iron--chromium system, Fe$_{x}$Cr$_{1-x}$, a wide dome of spin-glass behavior emerges when the ferromagnetism of iron is suppressed and the antiferromagnetism of chromium emerges as a function of increasing iron content $x$. As both, the high-temperature state and the characteristic cluster size vary as a function of $x$, different regimes of spin-glass behavior may be compared in a single, isostructural material system. Here, we report a study of the spin dynamics across the freezing process into the spin-glass state for different iron concentrations ($x = 0.145$, $0.175$, $0.21$) using Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort (MIEZE) spectroscopy. In the parameter range studied, the relaxation process observed experimentally may be described well in terms of a stretched exponential. In the reentrant cluster-glass regime, $x = 0.145$, this behavior persists up to high temperatures. In comparison, in the superparamagnetic regime, $x = 0.175$ and $x = 0.21$, a single relaxation time at elevated temperatures is observed. For all samples studied, the spin relaxation exhibits a momentum dependence consistent with a power law, providing evidence of a dispersive character of the spin relaxation.

The motion of a spin excitation across topologically non-trivial magnetic order exhibits a deflection that is analogous to the effect of the Lorentz force on an electrically charged particle in an orbital magnetic field. We used polarized inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the propagation of magnons (i.e., bosonic collective spin excitations) in a lattice of skyrmion tubes in manganese silicide. For wave vectors perpendicular to the skyrmion tubes, the magnon spectra are consistent with the formation of finely spaced emergent Landau levels that are characteristic of the fictitious magnetic field used to account for the nontrivial topological winding of the skyrmion lattice. This provides evidence of a topological magnon band structure in reciprocal space, which is borne out of the nontrivial real-space topology of a magnetic order.

Neutron scattering is a well-established tool for the investigation of the static and dynamic properties of condensed matter systems over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Many studies of high interest, however, can only be performed on small samples and typically require elaborate environments for variation of parameters such as temperature, magnetic field and pressure. To improve the achievable signal-to-background ratio, focusing devices based on elliptic or parabolic neutron guides or Montel mirrors have been implemented. Here we report an experimental demonstration of a nested mirror optics (NMO), which overcomes some of the disadvantages of such devices. While even simpler than the original Wolter design, our compact assembly of elliptic mirrors images neutrons from a source to a target, minimizing geometric aberrations, gravitational effects and waviness-induced blurring. Experiments performed at MIRA at FRM-II demonstrate the expected focusing properties and a beam transport efficiency of 72 % for our first prototype. NMO seem particularly well-suited to i) extraction of neutrons from compact high-brilliance neutron moderators, ii) general neutron transport, and iii) focusing and polarizing neutrons. The phase space of the neutrons hitting a sample can be tailored on-line to the needed experimental resolution, resulting in small scattering backgrounds. As additional benefits, NMO situated far away from both the moderator and the sample are less susceptible to radiation damage and can easily be replaced. Nanoscale structure determination belongs to one of the crucial tasks in materials science. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a highly valuable tool to investigate nanostructures. Here, we explore the possibility of a compact SANS instrument to be installed at an individual accelerator based pulsed low-flux source, and discuss applications in structural characterization, education, and training. Monte Carlo simulations of a realistic setup demonstrate the feasibility of such an instrument, with an ideal measurement taking about 7 hours. The anticipated length-scale measurement range is 0.5 nm to 50 nm. The minimalistic design results in an easy to operate, low maintenance instrument, independent of the schedules of large-scale facilities. Size, cost, and maintenance are comparable to laboratory small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) instruments, which makes SANS affordable for individual research teams at universities and provides unique chances for education and training. The proposed setup creates the opportunity to measure ultraslow structural changes, at a fraction of the cost of existing SANS instruments, hence enables weekly or monthly repetition rates. The concept can be expanded to an entire suite of instruments, including wide-angle neutron scattering (WANS) and diffraction, neutron reflectometry (NR), neutron radiography, grating interferometry (GI), and prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA)., Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Two dimensional angular correlation of the positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra are measured for $\mathrm{LaB}_6$ along high symmetry directions and compared with first principle calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). This allows the modeling of the Fermi surface in terms of ellipsoid electron pockets centered at $X$-points elongated along the $\Sigma$ axis (${\Gamma-M}$ direction). The obtained structure is in agreement with quantum oscillation measurements and previous band structure calculations. For the isostructural topologically not-trivial $\mathrm{SmB}_6$ the similar ellipsoids are connected through necks that have significantly smaller radii in the case of $\mathrm{LaB}_6$. A theoretical analysis of the 2D-ACAR spectra is also performed for $\mathrm{CeB}_6$ including the on-site repulsion $U$ correction to the local-density approximation (LDA+$U$) of the DFT. The similarities of 2D-ACAR spectra and the Fermi-surface projections of these two compounds allow to infer that both $\mathrm{LaB}_6$ and $\mathrm{CeB}_6$ are topologically trivial correlated metals., Comment: 11 pages, nice figures

The invention of self-shielding copper substrate neutron guides is described, along with the rationale behind the development, and the realisation of commercial supply. The relative advantages with respect to existing technologies are quantified. These include ease of manufacture, long lifetime, increased thermal conductivity, and enhanced fast neutron attenuation in the keV-MeV energy range. Whilst the activation of copper is initially higher than for other material options, for the full energy spectrum, many of the isotopes are short-lived, so that for realistic maintenance access times the radiation dose to workers is expected to be lower than steel and in the lowest zoning category for radiation safety outside the spallation target monolith. There is no impact on neutron reflectivity performance relative to established alternatives, and the manufacturing cost is similar to other polished metal substrates.

Recent progress in neutron spin-echo spectroscopy by means of longitudinal Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort (MIEZE) is reviewed. Key technical characteristics are summarized which highlight that the parameter range accessible in momentum and energy, as well as its limitations, are extremely well understood and controlled. Typical experimental data comprising quasi-elastic and inelastic scattering are presented, featuring magneto-elastic coupling and crystal field excitations in Ho2Ti2O7, the skyrmion lattice to paramagnetic transition under applied magnetic field in MnSi, ferromagnetic criticality and spin waves in Fe. In addition bench marking studies of the molecular dynamics in H2O are reported. Taken together, the advantages of MIEZE spectroscopy in studies at small and intermediate momentum transfers comprise an exceptionally wide dynamic range of over seven orders of magnitude, the capability to perform straight forward studies on depolarizing samples or under depolarizing sample environments, as well as on incoherently scattering materials., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

The instrumental layout and technical realisation of the neutron resonant spin echo (NRSE) spectrometer RESEDA at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany, is presented. RESEDA is based on a longitudinal field configuration, boosting both dynamic range and maximum resolution of the spectrometer compared to the conventional transverse layout. The resonant neutron spin echo technique enables the realisation of two complementary implementations: A longitudinal NRSE (LNRSE) option comparable to the classical neutron spin echo (NSE) method for highest energy resolution and large momentum transfers as well as a Modulation of Intensity with Zero Effort (MIEZE) option for depolarising samples or sample environments such as high magnetic fields, and strong incoherent scattering samples. With their outstanding dynamic range, exceeding nominally seven orders of magnitude, both options cover new fields for ultra-high resolution neutron spectroscopy in hard and soft condensed matter systems. The reconstruction of the complex reflection coefficient obtained by in situ Polarized Neutron Reflectometry is presented. Using the reference layer method, with a magnetic Fe layer, the phase information of the underlying Cu(001) seed layer sample structure is successfully retrieved and its scattering length density is calculated and compared with results obtained from traditional fitting. Two different reference layer approaches for retrieving the phase information are compared.

Using \textit{in situ} polarized neutron reflectometry, the depth resolved evolution of the magnetism and structure in a Pd/Fe/Pd trilayer thin-film is measured during growth. The initial film structure of Pd/Fe shows a small proximity induced magnetism in the underlayer and a magnetization in the Fe layer of $\approx1.6$\,$\mu_{\text{B}}$ per Fe atom, less than the expected bulk value of $2.2$\,$\mu_{\text{B}}$. Deposition of the Pd capping layer initially follows an island-like growth mode with subsequent coalescence. With increasing Pd deposition the Fe moment and the proximity-induced magnetism in the Pd capping layer decrease. After final deposition of the Pd capping layer, the magnetic profile is structurally and magnetically symmetric across the Fe layer, with magnetism induced in Pd up to 0.92 \,nm from the interface. Throughout the Pd deposition the Pd/Fe/Pd trilayer structure is becoming increasingly symmetric, a fact which points to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as a likely cause of the observed magnetic behavior., Comment: Submitted for publication in PRB (original version) on April 17, 2019

We report spin-polarized inelastic neutron scattering of the dynamical structure factor of the conical magnetic helix in the cubic chiral magnet MnSi. We find that the spectral weight of spin-flip scattering processes is concentrated on single branches for wavevector transfer parallel to the helix axis as inferred from well-defined peaks in the neutron spectra. In contrast, for wavevector transfers perpendicular to the helix the spectral weight is distributed among different branches of the magnon band structure as reflected in broader features of the spectra. Taking into account the effects of instrumental resolution, our experimental results are in excellent quantitative agreement with parameter-free theoretical predictions. Whereas the dispersion of the spin waves in MnSi appears to be approximately reciprocal at low energies and small applied fields, the associated spin-resolved spectral weight displays a pronounced non-reciprocity that implies a distinct non-reciprocal response in the limit of vanishing uniform magnetization at zero magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. In the intermediate mixed state (IMS) of type-II/1 superconductors, vortex lattice (VL) and Meissner state domains coexist due to a partially attractive vortex interaction. Using a neutron-based multiscale approach combined with magnetization measurements, we study the continuous decomposition of a homogeneous VL into increasingly dense domains in the IMS in bulk niobium samples of varying purity. We find a universal temperature dependence of the vortex spacing, closely related to the London penetration depth and independent of the external magnetic field. The rearrangement of vortices occurs even in the presence of a flux freezing transition, i.e. pronounced pinning, indicating a breakdown of pinning at the onset of the vortex attraction.

Due to the instrument's non-trivial resolution function, measurements on triple-axis spectrometers require extra care from the experimenter in order to obtain optimal results and to avoid unwanted spurious artefacts. We present a free and open-source software system that aims to ease many of the tasks encountered during the planning phase, in the execution and in data treatment of experiments performed on neutron triple-axis spectrometers. Using two cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometers we have succeeded in fully mapping out the field-dependent evolution of the non-reciprocal magnon dispersion relations in all magnetic phases of MnSi. The non-reciprocal nature of the dispersion manifests itself in a full asymmetry (non-reciprocity) of the dynamical structure factor $S(q, E, \mu_0 H_{int})$ with respect to flipping either the direction of the applied magnetic field $\mu_0 H_{int}$, the reduced momentum transfer $q$, or the energy transfer $E$., Comment: Contribution to the International Conference on Magnetism 2018. 5 pages, 4 figures

We report on the realization of a sputter deposition system for the in situ- and in operando-use in polarized neutron reflectometry experiments. Starting with the scientific requirements, which define the general design considerations, the external limitations and boundaries imposed by the available space at a neutron beamline and by the neutron and vacuum compatibility of the used materials, are assessed. The relevant aspects are then accounted for in the realization of our highly mobile deposition system, which was designed with a focus on a quick and simple installation and removability at the beamline. Magnetic spinels (with chemical formula $AX_{2}$O$_{4}$, with $X$ a 3$d$ transition metal ion) that also have an orbital degeneracy are Jahn-Teller active and hence possess a coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom. At high temperatures, MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is a cubic spinel based on V$^{3+}$ ions with a spin $S$=1 and a triply degenerate orbital ground state. A structural transition occurs at T$_{OO}$=63 K to an orbitally ordered phase with a tetragonal unit cell followed by an antiferromagnetic transition of T$_{N}$=42 K on cooling. We apply neutron spectroscopy in single crystals of MgV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ to show an anomaly for intermediate wavevectors at T$_{OO}$ associated with the acoustic phonon sensitive to the shear elastic modulus $\left(C_{11}-C_{12}\right)/2$. On warming, the shear mode softens for momentum transfers near close to half the Brillouin zone boundary, but recovers near the zone centre. High resolution spin-echo measurements further illustrate a temporal broadening with increased temperature over this intermediate range of wavevectors, indicative of a reduction in phonon lifetime. A subtle shift in phonon frequencies over the same range of momentum transfers is observed with magnetic fields. We report grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) and complementary off-specular neutron reflectometry (OSR) of the magnetic order in a single-crystalline epitaxial MnSi film on Si(111) in the thick film limit. Providing a means of direct reciprocal space mapping, GISANS and OSR reveal a magnetic modulation perpendicular to the films under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the film, where additional polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and magnetization measurements are in excellent agreement with the literature. Regardless of field orientation, our data does not suggest the presence of more complex spin textures, notably the formation of skyrmions. This observation establishes a distinct difference with bulk samples of MnSi of similar thickness under perpendicular field, in which a skyrmion lattice dominates the phase diagram. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements suggest that small shifts of the Si positions within the unstrained unit cell control the magnetic state, representing the main difference between the films and thin bulk samples.

The cold-neutron three-axis spectrometer MIRA is an instrument optimized for low-energy excitations. Its excellent intrinsic $Q$-resolution makes it ideal for studying incommensurate magnetic systems (elastic and inelastic). MIRA is at the forefront of using advanced neutron focusing optics such as elliptic guides, which enable the investigation of small samples under extreme conditions. Another advantage of MIRA is the modular assembly allowing for instrumental adaption to the needs of the experiment within a few hours. The development of new methods such as the spin-echo technique MIEZE is another important application at MIRA. The quantification of the dose rate and the composition of the dose in the vicinity of supermirror coated guides is essential for designing shielding for beamlines transporting neutrons with a high flux. We present results on a calculation of radiative neutron absorption in Ni/Ti and NiMo/Ti supermirror coatings which leads to the emission of high energy gamma rays. A simple parameterization of the absorption probability in the coating materials per incident neutron is given as a function of momentum transfer at reflection.

Spin waves in chiral magnetic materials are strongly influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction resulting in intriguing phenomena like non-reciprocal magnon propagation and magnetochiral dichroism. Here, we study the non-reciprocal magnon spectrum of the archetypical chiral magnet MnSi and its evolution as a function of magnetic field covering the field-polarized and conical helix phase. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the magnon energies and their spectral weights are determined quantitatively after deconvolution with the instrumental resolution. In the field-polarized phase the imaginary part of the dynamical susceptibility $\chi''(\varepsilon, {\bf q})$ is shown to be asymmetric with respect to wavevectors ${\bf q}$ longitudinal to the applied magnetic field ${\bf H}$, which is a hallmark of chiral magnetism. In the helimagnetic phase, $\chi''(\varepsilon, {\bf q})$ becomes increasingly symmetric with decreasing ${\bf H}$ due to the formation of helimagnon bands and the activation of additional spinflip and non-spinflip scattering channels. The step-wise growth of epitaxial Fe on Cu(001)/Si(001), investigated by in-situ polarized neutron reflectometry is presented. A sputter deposition system was integrated into the neutron reflectometer AMOR at the Swiss neutron spallation source SINQ, which enables the analysis of the microstructure and magnetic moments during all deposition steps of the Fe layer. We report on the progressive evolution of the accessible parameters describing the microstructure and the magnetic properties of the Fe film, which reproduce known features and extend our knowledge on the behavior of ultrathin iron films., Comment: submitted to PRApplied

Iron is one of the archetypical ferromagnets to study the critical fluctuations at a continuous phase transition thus serving as a model system for the application of scaling theory. We report a comprehensive study of the critical dynamics at the transition from the ferro- to the paramagnetic phase in Fe, employing the high-resolution neutron spin echo technique MIEZE. The results show that the dipolar interactions lead to an additional damping of the critical spin fluctuations at small momentum transfers $\bf q$. The results agree essentially with scaling theory if the dipolar interactions are taken into account by means of the mode-coupling equations. However, in contrast to expectations, the dipolar wavenumber $q_D$ that plays a central role in the scaling function $f(\kappa/q,q_D/\kappa)$ becomes temperature dependent. We propose the design of a Resonance SPin-echo spECtrometer for exTreme studies, RESPECT, that is ideally suited for the exploration of non-dispersive processes such as diffusion, crystallization, slow dynamics, tunneling processes, crystal electric field excitations, and spin fluctuations. It is a variant of the conventional neutron spin-echo technique (NSE) by i) replacing the long precession coils by pairs of longitudinal neutron spin-echo coils combined with RF-spin flippers and ii) by stabilizing the neutron polarization with small longitudinal guide fields that can in addition be used as field subtraction coils thus allowing to adjust the field integrals over a range of 8 orders of magnitude. Therefore, the dynamic range of RESPECT can in principle be varied over 8 orders of magnitude in time, if neutrons with the required energy are made available. Similarly as for existing NSE-spectrometers, spin echo times of up to approximately 1 microsecond can be reached if the divergence and the correction elements are properly adjusted. Thanks to the optional use of neutron guides and the fact that the currents for the correction coils are much smaller than in standard NSE, intensity gains of at least one order of magnitude are expected , making the concept of RESPECT also competitive for operation at medium flux neutron sources. RESPECT can also be operated in a MIEZE configuration allowing the investigation of relaxation processes in depolarizing environments as they occur when magnetic fields are applied at the sample position, i.e. for the investigation of the dynamics of flux lines in superconductors, magnetic fluctuations in ferromagnetic materials, and samples containing hydrogen., Comment: 14 pages, 22 figures

The investigation of fragile and potentially inhomogeneous forms of ferromagnetic order under extreme conditions, such as low temperatures and high pressures, is of central interest for areas such as geophysics, correlated electron systems, as well as the optimization of materials synthesis for applications where particular material properties are required. We report neutron depolarization imaging measurements on the weak ferromagnet Ni$_3$Al under pressures up to 10kbar using a Cu:Be clamp cell. Using a polychromatic neutron beam with wavelengths $\lambda\geq$ 4\AA in combination with $^3$He neutron spin filter cells as polarizer and analyzer we were able to track differences of the pressure response in inhomogeneous samples by virtue of high resolution neutron depolarization imaging. This provides spatially resolved and non-destructive access to the pressure dependence of the magnetic properties of inhomogeneous ferromagnetic materials.

The suitability of a transportable 3He-spin filter as temporary broadband polarizer for a Time-of-Flight neutron reflectometer is demonstrated. A simple two-wavelength method for characterisation of a 3He-spin filter is proposed, which can be applied even if the absolute transmittance of the 3He-spin filter cannot be accurately determined. We demonstrate the data treatment procedure for extracting the spin-up and spin-down neutron reflectivity from measurements obtained with a time dependent 3He polarization. The extraction of a very weak magnetic signal from reflectivity data, measured on the in-situ grown magnetic heterostructure Fe1 nm/Cu20 nm/Sisubstrate in an externally applied magnetic field of 30mT is presented and compared to similar measurements on the growth stage Cu20 nm/Sisubstrate of the very same sample, which does not yet contain any magnetic material.

Neutron grating interferometry is an advanced method in neutron imaging that allows the simultaneous recording of the transmission, the differential phase and the dark-field image. Especially the latter has recently received high interest because of its unique contrast mechanism which marks ultra-small-angle neutron scattering within the sample. Hence, in neutron grating interferometry, an imaging contrast is generated by scattering of neutrons off micrometer-sized inhomogeneities. Although the scatterer cannot be resolved it leads to a measurable local decoherence of the beam. Here, a report is given on the design considerations, principles and applications of a new neutron grating interferometer which has recently been implemented at the ANTARES beamline at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum. Its highly flexible design allows to perform experiments such as directional and quantitative dark-field imaging which provide spatially resolved information on the anisotropy and shape of the microstructure of the sample. A comprehensive overview of the nGI principle is given, followed by theoretical considerations to optimize the setup performance for different applications. We present scattering cross sections $\sigma_\text{scatt}$ of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in liquid deuterium at T = 20.6 K, as recently measured by means of a transmission experiment. The indispensable thorough raw data treatment procedure is explained. A calculation model for coherent and incoherent scattering in liquid deuterium in the hydrodynamic limit based on appropriate physical concepts is provided and shown to fit the data well. The applicability of the incoherent approximation for UCN scattering in liquid deuterium was tested and found to deliver acceptable results., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We determined the bulk electronic structure in the prototypical Heusler compound Cu$_2$MnAl by measuring the Angular Correlation of Annihilation Radiation (2D-ACAR) using spin-polarized positrons. To this end, a new algorithm for reconstructing 3D densities from projections is introduced that allows us to corroborate the excellent agreement between our electronic structure calculations and the experimental data. The contribution of each individual Fermi surface sheet to the magnetization was identified, and summed to a total spin magnetic moment of $3.6\,\pm\,0.5\,\mu_B/\mathrm{f.u.}$.
