The study was conducted in three watersheds (Dapo, Meja and Mizewa) in the Ethiopian part of the Blue Nile Basin to estimate the on-site cost of soil erosion using the productivity change approach, in which crop yield reduction due to plant nutrients lost with the sediment and runoff has been analysed. For this purpose, runoff measurement and sampling was conducted during the main rainy season of 2011 at the outlet of two to three sub-watersheds in each watershed. The sediment concentration of the runoff, and N and P contents in runoff and sediment were determined. Crop response functions were developed for the two plant nutrients based on data obtained from the nearest Agricultural Research Centres. The response functions were used to estimate crop yield reduction as a result of the lost N and P assuming there is no compensation through fertilization. The results show a significant yield reduction and resultant financial loss to the farmers. Considering only grain yield of maize (Zea mays), farmers at Dapo annually lose about USD 220 ha−1 and 150 ha−1 due to the loss of N and P, respectively. In view of the importance of the crop residues, including as feed, the loss can be even greater. The study demonstrated that in addition to the long-term deterioration of land quality, the annual financial loss suffered by farmers is substantial. Therefore, on farm soil and water conservation measures that are suitable in biophysical and socio-economic terms in the landscapes and beyond need to be encouraged.

Globally, each year 1.3 million neonates acquire human immunodeficiency virus during pregnancy, labour, and breastfeeding time. Replacing breastfeeding with recommended safe infant feeding practices significantly reduces the risk of transmission, nearly eliminating it. This study aimed to assess Human immunodeficiency virus exposed child feeding among 314 mothers with infants under 24 months old. Participants were selected using a systematic random sampling technique, and data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses employed to identify determinants for safe infant feeding. During interviews, the mean age of women was 32.35 years (standard deviation±4.5), and infants were 10.8(±3.951) months. The overall safe infant feeding was 67.2% (95% CI: 61.7, 72.9), with a mean knowledge score. By the study's end, 9 infants (2.89%) were confirmed to be infected with virus based on dried blood sample test. Maternal promoting factors for safe infant practice included infant age 25-35 years (adjusted odd ratio (aOR) =2.9) completing high school education (adjusted odd ratio = 9.2), having a good knowledge score for infant feeding (adjusted odd ratio = 8.2), and urban residency (adjusted odd ratio = 2.2). On the other hand, being married made it 83% less likely for safe infant feeding practices (adjusted odd ratio = 0.17) compared to those never in a union. Two in three mothers practiced safe infant feeding for their HIV-exposed infants, with a mean knowledge score of 70.3%. Background: Anemia is still one of the major public health problems in many developing countries including Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess individual and contextual-level factors associated with iron-folic acid supplement intake during pregnancy in Ethiopia., Methods: A secondary analysis was done on the 2019 mini-Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) dataset. A total of 3,927 pregnant women who gave birth five years before the survey were included in the analysis. Multi-level mixed-effect logistic regression analysis was done by STATA/SE version 14.0 to identify individual and contextual-level factors. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was used to show the strength and direction of the association. The level of statistical significance was declared at a P value less than 0.05., Results: Those primary educated [AOR = 1.83, 95% CI: (1.24, 2.74)], secondary educated [AOR = 2.75, 95% CI: (1.57, 4.824)], women who had greater than 5 living children [AOR = 2.02, 95% CI: (1.25, 3.27)], women who had ANC visit [AOR = 21.26, 95% CI: (13.56, 33.32)] and women who lived in a cluster with high proportion of women had ANC visit [AOR = 1.72, 95% CI: (1.17, 2.54)] and women who lived in Somali [AOR = 0.44 0.73, 95% CI: (0.22, 0.87)] were significantly associated with iron-folic acid intake during pregnancy., Conclusions: Both individual and contextual-level factors were significantly associated with iron-folic acid intake during pregnancy. From individual-level factors: education status of women, the total numbers of living children, and ANC follow-up are significant and from contextual-level factors: region and living in a high proportion of women who had ANC follow-up were found to have a statistically significant association. The improvement of sugarcane productivity depends on the crop varieties, growth environments, and management practices. In particular, the selection of the most productive variety and the use of an optimal fertilizer rate and plant bioregulator are critical for increasing sugarcane productivity and sugar yield. This study aimed to determine the high-performing sugarcane variety, optimal nitrogen rate, and potential bioregulator for improved sugarcane production, juice quality, and sugar yield. Two sugarcane varieties (D42/58 and NCo-334), three nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates (0, 100, and 150 kg/ha), and two bioregulators (Agrostemin and Crops®) were used for the study. The study revealed that sugarcane variety had a significant effect on all growth, yield, and quality parameters. Plant height was significantly influenced by variety and bioregulators, while stalk population was significantly influenced by two- and three-way interactions of varieties, bioregulators, and N fertilizer rates. Cane weight was significantly affected by variety, N fertilizer rate, and bioregulators, whereas cane yield was significantly affected by variety, N fertilizer, and their interaction effects. Sugar yield was similarly influenced by variety, bioregulator, and their interaction. The three main factors, as well as their two- and three-way interactions, had a considerable influence on cane quality parameters. Sugarcane variety D42/58 significantly outperformed variety NCo-334 in terms of sprouting, number of tillers, plant height, number of millable canes, and sucrose percentage by 7.49%, 9.50%, 12.80%, 10.50%, and 9.10%, respectively. The use of the D42/58 variety with N fertilizer (at 100 kg/ha) and/or the Agrostemin bioregulator also led to higher performance in cane population (107126), cane yield (153.34 tons/ha), Pol % (15.81%), and sugar yield (10.25 tons/ha). Most sugarcane growth, yield, juice quality, and sugar yield parameters were positively correlated; hence, high-performing varieties, appropriate N rates, and plant bioregulators could boost sugarcane productivity and sugar yield. Overall, the selection and combination of sugarcane variety D42/58 with 100 kg N/ha and/or Agrostemin bioregulator could maximize sugarcane production, juice quality, and sugar yield. Owing to different stochastic characteristics of wind energy systems, there would commonly be uncertainties in the processes of wind energy conversion that may ultimately cause to severely degrade the quality of electric power production. These uncertainties include time-varying fluctuations of mechanical & electrical parameters that can be generated during both linear, and nonlinear operating behaviors of doubly fed induction generator-based wind energy conversion system (DFIG WECS). In order to handle a wind power quality problem, the previous studies largely focused on adjustment of mechanical parameters particularly based on blade pitch angle control by proposing different control strategies, and controller models. This work proposes a rarely studied electrical parameter control method that is particularly used to implement the regulation of rotor current components & electromagnetic torque in a DFIG WECS, based on Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) strategy. Accordingly, a novel Proportional Integral controller model that employs a 2-Degree-of-Freedom [PI (2DOF)] is illustrated for an enhanced control of the rotor current components (quadrature & direct currents), electromagnetic torque under a 2MW DFIG WECS, which is operationally assumed to behave both linearly & nonlinearly. Herein, nonlinear operating behavior signifies a voltage dip that was assumed to be resulting when the system's normal (linear) voltage would suddenly drop by 90%. Furthermore, the overall model of the DFIG system was simulated in MATLAB-SIMULINK environment to evaluate the performances of PI controller (2DOF) under the system's stated operating behaviors. Based on the simulation signal statistics, the quadrature current distortion levels & DC mean values were mainly considered as the criteria for evaluating the controller performances. Nowadays, engineers are toiling away to achieve the maximum possible wind energy harvesting with low costs through enhancing the performances of WECSs in efforts to realize the wind power future forecasts. In fact, achieving this is basically not an easy task due to the intricacies that partly stem from the stochastic nature of wind energy. Further, the efforts in this regard can also be impacted by the ongoing trends in various wind energy conversion-related technologies, and engineering approaches. Hence, the wind power optimization is determined depending on the types of WECS technologies, output power smoothing, and design development approaches that be employed. Currently, the variable speed operations-based WECS technologies are generally opted in wind farm applications. Meanwhile, power management system is the heart of a WECS, where smoothing output power with reducing costs could be implemented. On the other hand, the automated control strategies were reported in literatures to better optimize WECSs' performances particularly in terms of costs compared to ESS devices. On this basis, MBPC and hybrid control algorithms were commonly presented as the current state-of-the-art for systems modeling, whereas MBD was preferred to be an efficient and cost-saving approach for advanced development of automated control systems. This study aims to conduct comparative analyses on WECS technologies (with different generators, and PECs) based on their energy harvesting capability, cost-effectiveness, and advances in designs. Assessments of the approaches and strategies for smoothing power production are also presented. Urinary tract infection and antimicrobial resistance remains the major problem, with significant health and socioeconomic burden, particularly in developing countries. This infection is commonly caused by Gram-negative bacteria, principally by Escherichia coli. So, this study aimed to determine bacterial isolates and antimicrobial resistance trend among patients with urinary tract infection at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. A retrospective study was conducted from January 1st to February 28th. A ten years (2010-2019) record of urine culture results, the biochemical test and antimicrobial susceptibility test results of isolates were collected from the medical microbiology laboratory register using a checklist. Data quality was checked, entered, and analyzed using SPSS version 23. We have presented results through descriptive tables and graphs. The overall prevalence of urinary tract infection among 4441 patients was 24.1%. Escherichia coli (37.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (11.4%), and Staphylococcus aureus (9.1%) were the predominant uropathogens. The infection rate was nearly similar across both sexes but highest in the age group above 60 years. Above 75% of Gram-negative isolates were resistant to ampicillin (92.5%), amoxicillin-clavulanate (80.1%), tetracycline (79.3%), cefuroxime (79.2%), and Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (78.3%). Over 2/3 of Gram-positive isolates also showed increased resistance to tetracycline (84.8%) and penicillin (71.6%). Moreover, more than 44% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR). We have seen an inconsistent trend of antimicrobial resistance, with an overall resistance rate of above 50%. In conclusion, the overall prevalence of urinary tract infection was high and elderly patients were most affected. More than 70% of both Gram positive and gram-negative isolates were resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, tetracycline, cefuroxime, Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Above than 44% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR). The increasing rate of antimicrobial resistance calls for routine diagnosis and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Background: Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is the largest source of HIV infection in children below the age of 15 years, and more than 90% of pediatric HIV are infected through mother to child transmission. Without treatment, one-half of those infected children will die before the age of 2 years. Despite this, there is limited evidence on PMTCT and its determinants. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors affecting the PMTCT service utilisation in Ethiopia., Methods: A two-stage stratified sampling technique was used to identify 4081 women from 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS). A multilevel mixed-effect binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the individual and community level factors associated with PMTCT services utilisation. In the final model, a p-value of < 0.05 and Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to declare statistically significant factors with the utilisation., Results: Overall, 21.9% (95% CI, 20.6-23.2) of the women were utilized PMTCT services. Educational status; primary (AOR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.27-2.13), secondary (AOR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.03-2.24) and higher school (AOR: 2.48, 95% CI: 1.45-4.22), poorer (AOR: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.12-2.37), middle (AOR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.10-3.02), richer (AOR: 2.44, 95% CI: 1.42-4.21) and richest (AOR: 4.45, 95% CI: 2.43-8.14) wealth status and orthodox religion follower (AOR: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.22-2.16) were the individual level factors. Moreover, having basic (AOR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.34-2.06) and comprehensive (AOR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.38-2.18) knowledge on HIV prevention methods, having knowledge on MTCT of HIV (AOR: 2.69, 95% CI: 2.16-3.36) were also factors at individual level. Whereas, rural residence (AOR: 0.52, 95% CI: 0.32-0.85) was the community level factors that affects the utilization., Conclusions: Less than one-fourth of the mothers had utilised the PMTCT services in Ethiopia. To increase the utilisation of the services, the health care providers should give emphases on counselling, awareness creation, and strengthen the existing frontline integrated health care services in the country.

In this study, a novel form of zero valent iron nanoparticle (GMP-nZVI) was successfully synthesized using mango peel extracts. Iron on the surface of the synthesized particle was negligible. Surface structure and compositional analysis was carried out using XPS and FTIR whereby the characteristic feature of the analysis highlighted the role of few organic compounds in the synthesis of GMP-nZVI. Depth profiling of GMP-nZVI by XPS indicated increasing intensity of Fe0 while the portion of Fe+2/Fe+3 and the dominant species which were on the surface (i.e. C and O) were decreasing. The structural form of GMP-nZVI has a layer of polyphenol followed by the oxides and hydroxides of iron onto the metallic iron which has a shell structure of 'Fe+3/Fe+2-polyphenol' complex islands on the core metallic iron (graphical abstract). The use of mango peel in the synthesis is a low cost approach and economically viable which also provides new insight of waste recycling and nanoremediation.

Introduction: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are important public health problems in Ethiopia. In 2013, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) has launched a national NTD master plan to eliminate major NTDs of public health importance by 2020. Benchmarking the current status of NTDs in the country is important to monitor and evaluate the progress in the implementation of interventions and their impacts. Therefore, this study aims to assess the trends of mortality and Disability-adjusted Life-Years (DALY) for the priority NTDs over the last 25 years., Methods: We used the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2015 estimates for this study. The GBD 2015 data source for cause of death and DALY estimation included verbal autopsy (VA), Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), and other disease specific surveys, Ministry of Health reports submitted to United Nations (UN) agencies and published scientific articles. Cause of Death Ensemble modeling (CODEm) and/or natural history models were used to estimate NTDs mortality rates. DALY were estimated as the sum of Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to premature mortality and Years Lived with Disability (YLD)., Results: All NTDs caused an estimated of 6,293 deaths (95% uncertainty interval (UI): 3699-10,080) in 1990 and 3,593 deaths (95% UI: 2051 - 6178) in 2015, a 43% reduction over the 25 years. Age-standardized mortality rates due to schistosomiasis, STH and leshmaniasis have declined by 91.3%, 73.5% and 21.6% respectively between 1990 to 2015. The number of DALYs due to all NTDs has declined from 814.4 thousand (95% UI: 548 thousand-1.2million) in 1990 to 579.5 thousand (95%UI: 309.4 thousand-1.3 million) in 2015. Age-standardized DALY rates due to all NTDs declined by 30.7%, from 17.6 per 1000(95%UI: 12.5-26.5) in 1990 to 12.2 per 1000(95%UI: 6.5 - 27.4) in 2015. Age-standardized DALY rate for trachoma declined from 92.7 per 100,000(95% UI: 63.2 - 128.4) in 1990 to 41.2 per 100,000(95%UI: 27.4-59.2) in 2015, a 55.6% reduction between 1990 and 2015. Age-standardized DALY rates for onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis and lymphiaticfilariasis decreased by 66.2%, 29.4% and 12.5% respectively between 1990 and 2015. DALY rate for ascariasis fell by 56.8% over the past 25 years., Conclusions: Ethiopia has made a remarkable progress in reducing the DALY rates for most of the NTDs over the last 25 years. The rapid scale of interventions and broader system strengthening may have a lasting impact on achieving the 2020 goal of elimination of most of NTDs. Ethiopia should strengthen the coverage of integrated interventions of NTD through proper coordination with other health programs and sectors and community participation to eliminate NTDs by 2020.

Background: Accidental needlestick injury rate among healthcare workers in Hawassa is extremely high. Epidemiological findings proved the infectious potential of this injury contaminated with a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected patient's blood., Objective: This study aimed at estimating the risk of HIV transmission from patients to healthcare workers in Hawassa City, Ethiopia., Method: A probabilistic risk model was employed. Scenario-based assumptions were made for the values of parameters following a review of published reports between 2007 and 2010., Parameters: HIV prevalence, needlestick injury rate, exposure rate, sero-conversion rate, risk of HIV transmission and cumulative risk of HIV transmission., Finding: Generally, healthcare workers in Hawassa are considered to be at a relatively low (0.0035%) occupational risk of contracting HIV - less than 4 in 100,000 of healthcare workers in the town (1 in 28,751 workers a year). The 30 years' maximum cumulative risk estimate is approximately five healthcare workers per 1000 workers in the study area. Still, this small number should be considered a serious matter requiring post-exposure prophylaxis following exposure to unsafe medical practice leading to HIV infection.

This was a screening study that aimed to determine the presence of nephrotoxic mycotoxins in urine samples from patients with chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The percentage detection of aflatoxins, ochratoxins and fumonisins in 31 patients were 61.29%, 93.5% and 19.4%, respectively. Geometric means of urinary aflatoxins and ochratoxins were 30.93 creatinine and 34.62 ng/g creatinine in chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology stage 1-2 patients and 84.12 ng/g creatinine and 63.52 ng/g creatinine in unaffected relatives of patients. In chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology stage 3-5 patients, geometric means of urinary aflatoxins and ochratoxins were 10.40 and 17.08 ng/g creatinine, respectively. Non-affected relatives of patients (n = 6) had comparable levels of these mycotoxins, but healthy Japanese individuals (n = 4) had lower levels than in Sri Lanka. The higher detection rate of urinary ochratoxins in Sri Lankans indicates that exposure is common in the region.

Recently, the Stockholm Convention prohibited the use of toxaphene and has been reviewing endosulfan. The historical use of these pesticides may contaminate food and tend to accumulate in the food chain. In this study, to evaluate the spatial and temporal trends of food contamination, the endosulfan and toxaphene levels were measured in pooled 24-h food composite samples from Chinese (n=10), Korean (n=10) and Japanese (n=40) adults in the 1990s and 2007-2009. Endosulfan was detected in 32 of 40 samples from Japan, but its levels (sum of α- and β-isomers) were low in both the 1990s and 2009 (range as geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) [GM (GSD)]: 0.96 (1.6)-1.42 (1.4) ng kg(-1)d(-1)). The dietary intakes of endosulfan in Seoul as GM (GSD) were 38.68 (1.3) ng kg bw(-1)d(-1) in 1994 and 92.17 (4.4) ng kg bw(-1)d(-1) in 2007, and significantly higher than those in Japan (p<0.05). The samples from Beijing showed a 50-fold increase in the endosulfan levels from 1993 (GM: 0.58 ng kg(-1)d(-1)) to 2009 (GM: 24.91 ng kg bw(-1)d(-1)) (p<0.05). Toxaphene was detected in 33 of 40 samples from Japan. The dietary intake of toxaphene in Japan (sum of Parlars #26, #50 and #62) was 0.32-1.21 ng kg bw(-1)d(-1) (range as geometric mean) and no temporal trend was observed. The dietary intake of toxaphene in Seoul increased significantly from 0.2 ng kg bw(-1)d(-1) (GM) in 1994 to 3.6 ng kg bw(-1)d(-1) (GM) in 2007 (p<0.05). Only one of 10 pooled samples from Beijing contained a detectable level of toxaphene (0.3 ng kg bw(-1)d(-1)). For the entire population, the risk of adverse health effects from dietary intakes of endosulfan and toxaphene is unlikely. However, the concentrations of endosulfan in several samples exceeded 10% of the acceptable daily intake limit value of 6 μg kg bw(-1)d(-1) set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
