Abstract

Recently the Kac formula for the conditional expectation of the first recurrence time of a conditionally ergodic conditional expectation preserving system was established in the measure free setting of vector lattices (Riesz spaces). We now give a formulation of the Kakutani-Rokhlin decomposition for conditionally ergodic systems in terms of components of weak order units in a vector lattice. In addition, we prove that every aperiodic conditional expectation preserving system can be approximated by a periodic system.

3. The strong Nakano property in Banach lattices

Abstract

We study the strong Nakano property in Banach lattices with a special focus on free Banach lattices. We show that for every finite dimensional Banach space $E$, the free Banach lattice $FBL[E]$ has the strong Nakano property with a constant independent of the dimension. It is also shown that if $FBL[E]$ has the strong Nakano property, then $E$ cannot contain subspaces isomorphic to neither $c_0$ nor $L_1$., Comment: 21 pages

7. Constrained Correlated Equilibria

Abstract

This paper introduces constrained correlated equilibrium, a solution concept combining correlation and coupled constraints in finite non-cooperative games. In the general case of an arbitrary correlation device and coupled constraints in the extended game, we study the conditions for equilibrium. In the particular case of constraints induced by a feasible set of probability distributions over action profiles, we first show that canonical correlation devices are sufficient to characterize the set of constrained correlated equilibrium distributions and provide conditions of their existence. Second, it is shown that constrained correlated equilibria of the mixed extension of the game do not lead to additional equilibrium distributions. Third, we show that the constrained correlated equilibrium distributions may not belong to the polytope of correlated equilibrium distributions. Finally, we illustrate these results through numerical examples.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore an abstraction of uniform integrability in vector lattices and demonstrate its application by providing a positive solution to an open question posed by Kuo, Rodda, and Watson. Specifically, we show that for finite p and with T as a conditionally expectation operator, spaces Lp are sequentially complete. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a de La Vall\'e Poussin Theorem does not hold in the general setting of vector lattices.

9. A diagonal principle for nets

Abstract

In our work, we provide a constructive proof of a generalized version of Cantor's diagonal argument for nets. This result expands the well-known technique beyond sequences, allowing it to be applied to a broader context. This result has significant potential applications in various fields, and we demonstrate a few of these in our work. One such application is the solution to a previously open problem posed by Kandi\'c, Marabeh, and Troitsky. Specifically, we show that the set of unbounded norm compact operators from a Banach space to a Banach lattice is closed.

12. Weighted Scheduling of Time-Sensitive Coflows

Abstract

Datacenter networks commonly facilitate the transmission of data in distributed computing frameworks through coflows, which are collections of parallel flows associated with a common task. Most of the existing research has concentrated on scheduling coflows to minimize the time required for their completion, i.e., to optimize the average dispatch rate of coflows in the network fabric. Nevertheless, modern applications often produce coflows that are specifically intended for online services and mission-crucial computational tasks, necessitating adherence to specific deadlines for their completion. In this paper, we introduce \wdcoflow,~ a new algorithm to maximize the weighted number of coflows that complete before their deadline. By combining a dynamic programming algorithm along with parallel inequalities, our heuristic solution performs at once coflow admission control and coflow prioritization, imposing a $\sigma$-order on the set of coflows. With extensive simulation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm in improving up to $3\times$ more coflows that meet their deadline in comparison the best SoA solution, namely $\mathtt{CS\text{-}MHA}$. Furthermore, when weights are used to differentiate coflow classes, \wdcoflow~ is able to improve the admission per class up to $4\times$, while increasing the average weighted coflow admission rate., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing. We explore its properties and show how this tool is crucial in generalizing various results across multiple disciplines to the framework of Riesz spaces. Among other applications, we utilize this concept in finance to derive characterizations of certain financial conditions.

Abstract

Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella Typhi, is a severe bacterial infection prevalent in developing countries, and can result in life-threatening complications if untreated. Nutcracker Syndrome is a rare vascular disorder involving compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. It can lead to various symptoms and poses diagnostic and management challenges. We present a case study of a patient diagnosed with typhoid fever in a Unit of Critical Emergency Care. Coincidentally, the evaluation through CT-scan revealed the presence of Nutcracker Syndrome. This report underscores the incidental discovery of Nutcracker Syndrome during the assessment of a patient with typhoid fever in a critical emergency care setting.

Abstract

The average coflow completion time (CCT) is the standard performance metric in coflow scheduling. However, standard CCT minimization may introduce unfairness between the data transfer phase of different computing jobs. Thus, while progress guarantees have been introduced in the literature to mitigate this fairness issue, the trade-off between fairness and efficiency of data transfer is hard to control. This paper introduces a fairness framework for coflow scheduling based on the concept of slowdown, i.e., the performance loss of a coflow compared to isolation. By controlling the slowdown it is possible to enforce a target coflow progress while minimizing the average CCT. In the proposed framework, the minimum slowdown for a batch of coflows can be determined in polynomial time. By showing the equivalence with Gaussian elimination, slowdown constraints are introduced into primal-dual iterations of the CoFair algorithm. The algorithm extends the class of the sigma-order schedulers to solve the fair coflow scheduling problem in polynomial time. It provides a 4-approximation of the average CCT w.r.t. an optimal scheduler. Extensive numerical results demonstrate that this approach can trade off average CCT for slowdown more efficiently than existing state of the art schedulers.

Abstract

Riesz space (non-pointwise) generalizations for iterative processes are given for the concepts of recurrence, first recurrence and conditional ergodicity. Riesz space conditional versions of the Poincar\'{e} Recurrence Theorem and the Kac formula are developed. Under mild assumptions, it is shown that every conditional expectation preserving process is conditionally ergodic with respect to the conditional expectation generated by the Ces\`aro mean associated with the iterates of the process. Applied to processes in $L^1(\Omega,{\mathcal A},\mu)$, where $\mu$ is a probability measure, new conditional versions of the above theorems are obtained.

Abstract

Datacenter networks routinely support the data transfers of distributed computing frameworks in the form of coflows, i.e., sets of concurrent flows related to a common task. The vast majority of the literature has focused on the problem of scheduling coflows for completion time minimization, i.e., to maximize the average rate at which coflows are dispatched in the network fabric. Modern applications, though, may generate coflows dedicated to online services and mission-critical computing tasks which have to comply with specific completion deadlines. In this paper, we introduce $\mathtt{DCoflow}$, a lightweight deadline-aware scheduler for time-critical coflows in datacenter networks. The algorithm combines an online joint admission control and scheduling logic and returns a $\sigma$-order schedule which maximizes the number of coflows that attain their deadlines. Abstract

The widespread adoption of 5G cellular technology will evolve as one of the major drivers for the growth of IoT-based applications. In this paper, we consider a Service Provider (SP) that launches a smart city service based on IoT data readings: in order to serve IoT data collected across different locations, the SP dynamically negotiates and rescales bandwidth and service functions. 5G network slicing functions are key to lease an appropriate amount of resources over heterogeneous access technologies and different site types. Also, different infrastructure providers will charge slicing service depending on specific access technology supported across sites and IoT data collection patterns. We introduce a pricing mechanism based on Age of Information (AoI) to reduce the cost of SPs. It provides incentives for devices to smooth traffic by shifting part of the traffic load from highly congested and more expensive locations to lesser charged ones, while meeting QoS requirements of the IoT service. The proposed optimal pricing scheme comprises a two-stage decision process, where the SP determines the pricing of each location and devices schedule uploads of collected data based on the optimal uploading policy. Simulations show that the SP attains consistent cost reductions tuning the trade-off between slicing costs and the AoI of uploaded IoT data.

Abstract

Allergen specific immunotherapy (ASI) is a well-documented treatment for allergic asthma, rhinitis and allergy to bee venoms. Immunotherapy with subcutaneous injections of allergens extracts has proved beneficial in reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma. Side effects due to specific immunotherapy in short term have been largely documented. These effects were various but were usually mild. Fatal reactions are less frequent. We reported a case of a woman, with a history of allergic asthma under specific desensitization protocol who developed an acute multi-organ failure (MOF) consecutive to administration of ASI (Alustal Stallergenes SA, France). This fatal reaction has never been described as adverse event of specific immunotherapy. We aimed to describe this dramatic reaction, expose the arguments to define the relationship between the administration of allergen extract and the occurrence of this fatal reaction.

Résumé Objectif- Evaluer l’intérêt de l’utilisation des technologies de l’information et de la communication éducatives dans la formation des étudiants à la Faculté de Médecine Dentaire de Monastir. Matériels et méthodes- Il s’agissait d’une étude descriptive menée auprès des appre­nants en sixième année. Les données ont été collectées par un questionnaire, composé de quatre parties et mis en ligne en 2022 sur les pages Facebook de la promotion. Résultats-Sur les 253 apprenants, 208 ont répondu parmi lesquels 31 questionnaires ont été exclus. Cent soixante dix-sept réponses ont été retenues. Les participants étaient tout le temps ou presque connectés sur internet, mais 26,1% passaient moins de 30 minutes par jour dans le cadre de leurs études. Les principaux moteurs de recherche étaient Google (93,8%) et Wikipédia (48%) ; Facebook était le principal réseau social (91%) utilisé lors de l’apprentissage. La moitié des apprenants connaissaient les plate­formes e-learning bien que 72% d’entre eux n’aient pas eu d’expériences antérieures. Ils préféraient les cours en lignes aux cours magistraux (68,4%). 90% des apprenants mécon­naissaient les MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Conclusion-Cette étude a permis de démontrer l’intérêt des technologies de l’informa­tion et de la communication dans le cursus universitaire. Results- Of the 253 interns, 208 responded and 177 responsers were retained. The survey participants were connected to the internet almost all the time but 26.1% spent less than 30 minutes a day on their studies, mainly to access online courses or conduct literature research. The principle search engine were Google (93.8%) and Wikipedia (48%); Facebook was the principal social media (91%) used during learning. Almost half of the internal trainees were familiar with e-learning platforms although 72% of them had no previous experience. They preferred online courses to lectures (68.4 %) in order to consult the course at any time. More than 90% of respondents were unaware of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Conclusion- This study demonstrated the importance of the introduction of the Information and Educational Technologies in the university curriculum.

Abstract

The Cape Verde palm tree, Phoenix atlantica, holds significant ecological and cultural importance within the Cape Verde archipelago. However, its genetic distinctiveness has been questioned due to its close relationship and morphological similarity to the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). In this study, we used an expanded sample set, 18 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, and a plastid minisatellite to characterize P. atlantica in Cape Verde and investigate its relationship with other Phoenix species. Our findings identify genetic markers that differentiate the P. atlantica genetic pool, including a unique fixed allele. We also provide evidence of the recent divergence of P. atlantica from Northern African date palm populations, suggesting a relatively recent colonization of Cape Verde by palm trees. Additionally, we characterized the genetic composition of palm tree populations across three Cape Verde islands, concluding that wild samples from certain populations in Boavista and Sal are best suited for establishing a seed and/or germplasm bank for replantation efforts, representing a crucial step for the conservation of Cape Verde’s natural heritage. Overall, our results enhance the understanding of the historical trajectories and genetic characterization of palm trees in Africa, offering valuable insights for conservation strategies.

Abstract

The endemic palm from the Canary Islands, Phoenix canariensis, is one of the most distinctive elements of the Canarian vegetation landscape, contributing to cultural, economic and environmental aspects. One of the main conservation problems facing this iconic palm is anthropogenic hybridization with other Phoenix species, particularly Phoenix dactylifera, which has been introduced extensively throughout its geographical range. Therefore, it is important to obtain a genetic tool that addresses different issues that may have an impact on the protection of P. canariensis, including ornamental applications and wild population conservation purposes. Our main goals were to detect a molecular tracer that could reliably distinguish between Phoenix canariensis and P. dactylifera in the Canary archipelago and to characterize the presence and extent of genetic hybridization events between the two species. We used 19 nuclear microsatellites and 1 chloroplast minisatellite set and analysed a large sample size (N = 433) of plants using both Bayesian methods and ordination techniques. Our data showed that a set of 13 nuclear markers revealed diagnostic alleles for P. canariensis, which were defined as the Canarian nuclear genotype (CNG). Moreover, P. canariensis exhibited an exclusive chlorotype of 266 bp that together with the GNC serve as an indicator of genetic purity in the Canarian palm. These markers are sufficient to detect any hybrid, even if it is not related to morphological differences. The occurrence of a considerable number of specimens with different degrees of hybridization is discussed in terms of the existence of different generations of hybrids and different types of crosses. Thus, the genetic tracers represent an invaluable tool to address any proposal for the genetic conservation of Phoenix canariensis.

Abstract

As an associated aspect of climate change, drought has become a severe challenge in different parts of the world, especially in regions where life depends on predominantly rain-fed agriculture. The Ain Defla study area is mostly agricultural land, most of its activity depends on rain. In recent years, droughts of varying impact and severity have affected crops. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and study the regions that are most vulnerable to drought in terms of time and space. Moreover, it provides a detailed picture of the drought in the region and finds appropriate solutions in the event of its return in the future. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the deviation from the average (EM) were calculated annually for 38 years for 13 stations from 1981 to 2019 within the study area. GIS was used to compile digital maps to visualize the spatial distribution of rainfall (P) and the difference in rainfall (EM) and determine the aridity using SPI values within the region based on the statistical method of Kriging. The Ain Defla region was subjected to drought of varying intensity and impact during the years (1983, 1989 and 2000), which extends with a decreasing value from east to west. Some wet years were also observed (2013 and 2018). Most years were in the moderate category by 60%. It is possible to rely on rain-fed agriculture in the western regions, that were less prone to drought during the study period compared to the eastern part, an area where drought is stable on an ongoing basis.

Abstract

Intracellular uptake of adenosine is essential for optimal erythroid commitment and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. The role of adenosine signaling is well documented in the regulation of blood flow, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and stem cell regeneration. However, the role of adenosine signaling in hematopoiesis remains unclear. In this study, we show that adenosine signaling inhibits the proliferation of erythroid precursors by activating the p53 pathway and hampers the terminal erythroid maturation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the activation of specific adenosine receptors promotes myelopoiesis. Overall, our findings indicate that extracellular adenosine could be a new player in the regulation of hematopoiesis.
