Abstract

Visible light communication (VLC), which is a prominent emerging solution that complements the radio frequency (RF) technology, exhibits the potential to meet the demands of fifth-generation (5G) and beyond technologies. The random movement of mobile terminals in the indoor environment is a challenge in the VLC system. The model of optical attocells has a critical role in the uniform distribution and the quality of communication links in terms of received power and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). As such, the optical attocells positions were optimized in this study with a developed try and error (TE) algorithm. The optimized optical attocells were examined and compared with previous models. This novel approach had successfully increased minimum received power from −1.29 to −0.225 dBm, along with enhanced SNR performance by 2.06 dB. The bit error rate (BER) was reduced to 4.42 × 10−8 and 6.63 × 10−14 by utilizing OOK-NRZ and BPSK modulation techniques, respectively. The optimized attocells positions displayed better uniform distribution, as both received power and SNR performances improved by 0.45 and 0.026, respectively. As the results of the proposed model are optimal, it is suitable for standard office and room model applications.

Abstract

Visible light communication (VLC) has a paramount role in industrial implementations, especially for better energy efficiency, high speed-data rates, and low susceptibility to interference. However, since studies on VLC for industrial implementations are in scarcity, areas concerning illumination optimisation and communication performances demand further investigation. As such, this paper presents a new modelling of light fixture distribution for a warehouse model to provide acceptable illumination and communication performances. The proposed model was evaluated based on various semi-angles at half power (SAAHP) and different height levels for several parameters, including received power, signal to noise ratio (SNR), and bit error rate (BER). The results revealed improvement in terms of received power and SNR with 30 Mbps data rate. Various modulations were studied to improve the link quality, whereby better average BER values of 5.55 x 10-15 and 1.06 x 10-10 had been achieved with 4 PAM and 8 PPM, respectively. Abstract

Three isolates of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the fermented food product, Budu, were identified as genus lactobacillus (Lactobacillus casei LA17, Lactobacillus plantarum LA22 and L. paracasei LA02), and the highest population was Lb. paracasei LA02. The antibacterial agent produced by the isolates inhibited the growth of a range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Antimicrobial sensitivity test to 18 different types of antibiotic were evaluated using the disc diffusion method. Inhibition zone diameter was measured and calculated from the means of five determinations and expressed in terms of resistance or susceptibility. All the LAB isolates were resistant to colestin sulphate, streptomycin, amikacin, norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, mecillinam, sulphanethoxazole/ trimethoprim, kanamycin, neomycin, bacitracin and gentamycin but susceptible to erythromycin, penicillin G, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, ampicillin and nitrofurantion.

Abstract

Tiivistelmä. Pro gradu -tutkielman aiheena on Malesian etnisistä kysymyksistä käyty julkinen keskustelu vuosina 1965–1969. Tutkielman lähdeaineistona käytettiin singaporelaislähtöistä englanninkielistä The Straits Times -sanomalehteä. Analysoin tutkielmassa, missä yhteyksissä ja miten etnisistä kysymyksistä keskusteltiin. Tämän lisäksi selvitin, mitä etnisten kysymysten käsittely kertoi Malesian poliittisen eliitin pyrkimyksistä luoda yhtenäinen kansakunta. Tarve yhtenäistää kansaa oli kova, sillä Malesia oli vuoden 1957 itsenäistymisen yhteydessä perinyt Ison-Britannian siirtomaahallinnon aikana muodostuneen monietnisen väestön, joka oli karkeasti sanottuna jakautunut taloudellisesti hyvin toimeentuleviin kiinalaisiin ja vähempiosaisiin, mutta poliittisessa valta-asemassa oleviin malaijeihin. Tutkielma on mediahistoriaa ja poliittista historiaa. Metodisesti hyödynsin aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysia eli analysoin etnisistä kysymyksistä käytyä keskustelua niissä yhteyksissä, missä sanomalehti nosti ne esille. The Straits Times oli yksi Malesian yhteiskunnallisen ja poliittisen keskustelun foorumi. Vaikka sanomalehdessä seurattiin poliittista keskustelua näinnäisen puolueettomasti, saivat hallituksessa olleet puolueet eniten näkyvyyttä lehden sivuilla. Lehdistön vapautta rajoittaneet lait, asetukset ja lehden harjoittama itsesensuuri vaikuttivat myös The Straits Timesin tapaan käsitellä poliittisesti arkoja etnisiä kysymyksiä kuten kielipolitiikkaa. Tutkimusajanjakson aikana etnisiä kysymyksiä käsiteltiin The Straits Timesissa poliittisen päätöksenteon ja poliittisen kilpailun yhteyksissä. Myös monet yhteiskunnalliset kriisit kuten Singaporen ero Malesian liittovaltiosta vuonna 1965, Penangin osavaltiossa puhjenneet mellakat vuonna 1967 ja vuoden 1969 parlamenttivaalien jälkeiset mellakat nostivat etniset kysymykset julkisen keskustelun keskiöön. Malesian malaijijohtoinen hallitus pyrki yhtenäistämään monietnistä kansaa yhteisen identiteetin, malesialaisuuden, avulla. The Straits Timesissa käydyistä keskusteluista ilmeni, että malesialaisuutta tulkittiin monella tavalla. Hallitukselle malesialaisuus merkitsi lähes samaa kuin malaijilaisuus kun taas monet oppositiopuolueet näkivät malesialaisuudessa mahdollisuuden monietniselle kansallisidentiteetille. Nämä ristiriidat ja The Straits Timesissa ylläpidetyt siirtomaa-aikaiset stereotyyppiset kuvaukset Malesian etnisistä ryhmistä johtivat osaltaan 1960-luvulla etnisten malaijien ja kiinalaisten välisiin väkivaltaisiin yhteenottoihin. Tämä tutkielma pyrkii täydentämään historiantutkimuksen antamaa kuvaa postkolonialistisesta Malesiasta ja sen sisällä käydyistä etnisiin kysymyksiin liittyneistä keskusteluista, mihin The Straits Times tarjosi lähdeaineistona uudenlaisen näkökulman.

Abstract

In present time, it is common for any monitoring system to incorporate Internet of Things (IoT) to provide online real-time data. In this project, smart aquaculture monitoring system was developed by combining Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and Wi-Fi module. In order to verify the system performance, the smart aquaculture monitoring system was tested at actual site located at Fisheries Research Institute (FRI), Gelang Patah, Johor. Three types of sensors (pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature) were deployed in a shrimp pond to monitor the water quality continuously in real-time. The data collected by this system is further analyzed to understand the system stability for different setup. From measurement performed at the site, optimum working condition of system was successfully identified. The system able to provide reliable and accurate data when compared to commercial device used by FRI. Implementation of a smart online monitoring system reduces the use of manpower for monitoring and ensures the water quality is maintained at the acceptable level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Public social distancing has been a great concern for the worldwide community as the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the COVID-19 pandemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). With regards to this global issue, this paper will share the latest commercially available solution and technology on crowd monitoring systems to determine the number of people in confined and crowded spaces at airport terminals which may have the potential for contagious diseases infection. Estimation of crowd dynamics is essential for crowd monitoring to ensure public safety by reducing the possibility of being infected by the COVID-19 virus. In this report a number of commercial and under development crowd monitoring products are reviewed and presented. Research and development of crowd monitoring technology is increasingly demanding to monitor crowds at strategic locations such as entry and exit points of closed areas to ensure public safety and to control the pandemic. In particular for the strategic area at the airport terminal, an efficient crowd monitoring solution is expected to support huge data collection and real time analysis, as well as providing online monitoring of crowds based on noncontact sensors for movement counting to restrain COVID-19 outbreaks. Abstract

Conventional machining of nickel-titanium shape-memory alloys (NiTi SMAs) faces significant challenges as a result of high thermal and mechanical distortions. The phase transformation temperatures of NiTi SMAs are primarily affected by the rise in temperature during the cutting process, which causes poor machinability under the conventional coolant approach. This research explored the effects of hybrid cooling-lubricating of minimal quantity nano-lubricants with compressible-chilled air generated from a vortex tube during the turning of the NiTi alloys. The experimental procedure involved measurement of induced-cutting force components under variable cutting conditions utilising various coolant approaches. A depth of cut, 0.5 mm with cutting speeds of 12.5, 25, and 50 m/min and feed rates of 0.05 and 0.1 rev/min were utilised. The hybrid cooling approach of minimum quantity nano-lubricants with vortex cooling, can increase tool life for most of the tested conditions and has a considerable influence in reducing the inducedcutting force. Abstract

The study aims to present baseline data on the reproductive anatomy of a poorly known tropical deer species, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis). The anatomy of female reproductive system is described using seven uniparous hinds, aged between four and eight years. The various reproductive structures were studied via standard descriptive methods. There was a significant difference in the length and width of both right and left ovaries. The left ovary was slightly larger than the right ovary which indicates that it is physiologically more active. The results of the study showed that the anatomy of female reproductive system of R. timorensis was similar to that observed in domestic ruminants except that the uterus did not have an interconual ligament and this implies that the uterine horns are anchored in such a way that sperm deposited into only one uterine horn of the Rusa deer will be transported to the other uterine horn (interconual transport). Unlike the red brocket deer and pampas deer, the cervix of R. timorensis was characterized by six cervical rings projecting into the cervical canal. This feature should be taken into account when designing effective instrumentation and techniques for transcervical passage of semen during artificial insemination in this species. The results from this study have provided baseline data on the reproductive anatomy of this vulnerable species, and the knowledge generated can be useful in the development of appropriate reproductive techniques in order to increase its population in captivity and also enable easy detection of its reproductive anomalies, thus strategies to propagate and conserve the species can be established.

Abstract

The technology of using Al2O3 nanoparticles in machining seems to solve major machining problems related to friction and heat generation. This achievement is strongly related to the size of particles itself. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of the size of Al2O3 particles dispersed in solcut base oil with added Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate (SDBS), during the turning operation of mild steel under Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) condition. The two dependent variables of interest are surface roughness and tool wear. Two different Al2O3 particle sized (600nm and <50nm) SDBS-added nanolubricant were supplied into the cutting region under MQL system. The experimental results show that MQL nanolubricant (<50nm) with SDBS enhances surface finish by 9.3% and tool wear by 62.5% compared to that of MQL nanolubricant (600nm) with SDBS. Abstract

The pathogenicity of a Nervous Necrosis Virus isolate obtained from naturally infected Golden grey mullet (Liza auratus) suffering serious mortalities in Iranian coastline water of the Caspian Sea was investigated for first time. An experimental infection has been performed using three groups, two experimental groups and one control group of Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) with mean weight 0.47±0.09 g, at temperature 25ºC. The infectious dosage (50 ml) with TCID50/ml= 10^4.25 for 2 hours in group 1 and 4 hours in group 2 developed the disease with immersion method. Clear clinical signs associated with significant mortality were observed since 15 dpi. Cumulative mortalities rose to 100% at 30 dpi. While in the control group no mortality was recorded. Virus was re-isolated on SSN-1 cell line that showing typical CPE developed after inoculation with tissues filtrate from dead fish. Histopathological examination of exposed fish, showed clear vacuolization in the granular layer of the retina and cerebellum. TEM micrographs revealed intracytoplasmic vacuoles in the retina of infected Guppy. IHC revealed the presence of viral antigens in the brain and retina. These results confirmed the pathogenicity of the NNV isolate obtained from Golden grey mullet suffering high mortality with regard to suggest that the same agent isolated from golden grey mullet is very likely the cause of the mortality observed in the same species.
