Technical efficiency is crucial for the advancement and growth of contemporary enterprises and is a major area of policy concern in many countries. Numerous pieces of evidence suggest that Ethiopia's industries, particularly those depend on wood were not operating as efficient as they should be. As a result, the country is not benefiting as much from the sector as it ought to, and it is now compelled to import wooden products at a higher cost in foreign exchange. Therefore, to examine the technical efficiency of the industries; four purposively selected main cities such as Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Jima and Bahir Dar were selected. From these cities, information was collected, analyzed, and the results were obtained. The result shows that the technical efficiency of Ethiopia's wood industries is lower than expected. Out of a total of 170, about 149 (87.6 %) of the furniture workshops are technically inefficient. This is because workers working in the wood industries are less educated. In addition to this lack of on-the-job training, lack of modern machineries and insufficient skills to use them properly, inconvenient production and sales area, shortage and quality of raw materials, insufficient capital, lack of market connection, have been shown to be the reasons. Therefore, to improve the technical efficiency of the industries, it is better to have continuous vocational training, loan support so that they can get and use better machines, as well as convenient manufacturing, product display and sales, improving and facilitating market linkages.

Woodfuel production and consumption have been a concern for multiple stakeholders involved in household energy use, deforestation, and climate change. While research into the underlying decision-making process is growing, it remains insufficient. Such a study offers opportunities to develop policies that enable diversification of household energy consumption and livelihood options away from woodfuel use. Policymakers often lack an understanding of factors correlated with households' participation in woodfuel production. Therefore, this study examined the correlation between household participation in woodfuel production and factors that influence households' participation in woodfuel production in dryland areas of Ethiopia. Data were collected from 1,114 purposively selected woodfuel-producing and non-producing households through household surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. The sample included 775 participant households and 339 non-participant households. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a binary logistic regression model. The results revealed that drought and related shocks are the main factors that forced households to participate in woodfuel production. The model results indicated that age, education, landholding, livestock holding, production asset value, ownership of improved cook stoves, number of years lived in the area, distance from the forest, access to forest extension, and institutional membership are statistically significant factors that negatively influence household participation in woodfuel production. On the other hand, household expenditure and drought occurrence positively and significantly influence the participation of households in woodfuel production. The findings of the study suggest that sustainable management and utilization of dryland forest resources require considering socioeconomic, demographic, institutional, and environmental factors correlated with households' decisions to participate in woodfuel production. This can be achieved through sound institutional setups and policy frameworks in the sector.

Ethiopia's growing population, urbanization, and booming construction industries are all factors in the country's rising demand for wood products. The country's current plantations are inadequate to meet the demand for wood products. The country only exports a small amount of wood, accounting for about 1.45% of all imports, while importing over 3 million m3 round wood equivalent (RWE), amounting to about USD 182.53 million. This showed that there is a large gap between import and export bills, which indicates a negative trade balance. The goal of this study is to examine supply patterns as well as existing and prospective demand for wood products, particularly industrial wood and wood fuel. First, a collection of all relevant documents indicating supply and demand was done. Then, two groups were created out of official records and study papers. Literature that is pertinent and related to the topic was chosen from among the groups. Different publications between 2010 and 2022 a total of 37 were utilized for this review. It was found that Ethiopia consumes more than 130 million m3/year of round wood equivalent, of which about 92.3% is used as wood fuel and the remaining is used to produce industrial goods with added value. Nowadays, imports provide a significant amount of Ethiopia's wood demand, and in 2015 alone, more than 30% of industrial needs were satisfied by imports. The review helps in determining the resource potential, supply-demand imbalance, and current level of demand for wood products.

Environment-friendly energy practices are essential for a sustainable and quality environment in most developing countries, like Ethiopia. To achieve this, results-based financing (RBF) was implemented to distribute improved cookstove with a demand and supply side management system. However, the success of RBF is not evaluated regarding households’ preferences and adoption of the stove. This study was conducted to evaluate households’ preference and adoption of improved Tikikil stove in the RBF implementation areas. Data were collected from 191 households using a household survey and 10 focus group discussions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a binary logit regression model using STATA 16 software. The result revealed that the cost of stove, stove holding, construction material, cooking time reduction, and smoke reduction were the top five attributes ranked by user households. The dissatisfied households have complained about durability, wood inlet size, stove cost, and suitability of pot size. Results also indicated that the success of RBF program showed moderately effective. The regression result revealed that education, family size, landholding size, livestock holding, fuel expenditure, awareness, and separate kitchen were significantly and positively associated while distance to nearest town is significantly and negatively related to the adoption of Tikikil stove. The findings suggest that households need Tikikil stove options to reduce the negative effect of traditional stoves but currently available stoves lack to address the preferences of the households. In addition, different socio-economic characteristics of households and stove attributes are important factors that need to consider for the wider adoption of ICS to meet the current demand of carbon credit by reducing emissions from traditional stove.

Demand for all forest products has been increasing in Ethiopia, due to population, economic growth, and the rise in the construction sector. In the past, about 85% of this demand has been covered by indigenous timber species which are now endangered and protected from harvest. As an alternative, there are potential lesser-used timber species in the country that can be utilized to narrow down the gap between supply and demand. This study aims to describe the utilization practices of timber species and identify factors affecting the utilization of lesser-used timber species in furniture industries. The study was conducted in four (4) purposively selected towns based on their Wood business transaction and resource availability. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires. A binary logit model was employed to estimate factors influencing the utilization of lesser-used timber species for industrial application. The results show that the majority of wood furniture industries still depend on pit sawed valuable indigenous timber species of the country. The result indicated that Cordia africana is the main type of timber species preferred to be utilized in the majority of furniture industries. It also indicated that there is a negative perception towards lesser-used timber species, less access to appropriate information, and skill training on wood processing. Therefore, the study implicates the need to intervene in changing perceptions toward these species and build the technical capacity of the wood industries through skill training.
