5. School's Perspectives on Educational Programmes under Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives. Case Study: Malaysia

Abstract

This study explores the impacts of the Corporate Social Responsibility educational programme from the schools' perspectives towards their pupils and school. A qualitative approach was chosen from a case study of these programmes conducted in Malaysia. The method used for data collection was semi-structured interviews. Purposive sampling was adopted to collect data from headmasters/mistresses from 10 primary schools and was analysed using narrative analysis. Findings shows that these programmes have impacted pupils through educational exposure, a holistic approach, academic improvement, feeling motivated, encouraging creativity and assisting in pupils' future career development. One of the impacts that were related to the educational programmes was the teaching and learning knowledge that was gained by the teachers. Other than that, the educational programmes also eased the financial burden of the school as well as providing benefits to the surrounding community. Schools suggested that the programmes should be improved by creating better and more programme type content, being more academically focused, allocating more funding, being conducted over a longer period for sustainability, and conducting the programme more regularly. Corporate Social Responsibility educational programmes in future are suggested to be academic related which should include an English language programme, information technology, 21st century learning, a green programme, basic skills (read, write, count), a motivational programme, and a study visit. In conclusion, CSR educational programmes initiatives must be sustainable because it had great impact on pupils, teachers, schools, and the community surrounding the school.

Abstract

Females who use drugs (FWUDs) are at risk of continuing illicit substance use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We investigated the prevalence rates and factors associated with these practices in a sample of 200 FWUDs recruited from a publicly-run drug rehabilitation center. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. The majority (86%) was Malay (n = 171/200), currently single (71%, n = 141/200), and 51% had nine years of education. The mean age of respondents was 32.2 years (SD = 8.61). Thirty-eight percent (n = 75/200) reported ever using illicit substances during pregnancy, while 15% (n = 30/200) had used them during breastfeeding. Higher odds of using drugs during pregnancy were associated with having an intimate male drug-using partner and with persons who reported abandoning an infant in the past. Lower odds were linked with women who used heroin with ATS (relative to those who used only ATS), and shorter-term ATS (≤3 years) relative to long term ATS users. At a lower level of significance (p = 0.054), being married also lowered the odds. Higher odds of drug use during breastfeeding were associated with having an intimate male drug-using partner, and previous methadone use history, while lower odds were associated with short-term ATS use and being employed. The findings highlight the need for timely and targeted interventions to inform, engage and promote the participation of FWUDs in pre- and post-natal care services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. Haor(Wetland) Community in Bangladesh: Problems/Needs, Resources and Potential for Employing Smart Village Ideas

Abstract

This article discusses needs and problems and resources in the Haor(wetland) region in Bangladesh and the potential for employing smart village ideas to address a few identified needs and problems. The study was conducted on 12 villages of the Tanguar Haorof Sunamganj District. A total of 20 key informant interviews (KIIs) and 12 focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted following purposive sampling. The findings indicated that Haorpeople experience acute poverty, ill health, low level of education and endemic unemployment which are being worsened by frequent floods and climate-induced damages. The Haorarea occupies some potential resources, including land, livestock, marshlands, electricity and mobile telephones, all of which could be mobilised to improve the quality of Haorpeople’s lives. The paper suggests applying the smart village model that touches every facet of wetland life, including agriculture, education, employment and healthcare to improve the living standard of the people of the Haorregion.
