Objective: Subcentimeter papillary thyroid carcinoma (sPTC), also known as papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, is associated with a good prognosis and low mortality risk. However, some sPTCs exhibit biologically aggressive characteristics. The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting the prognosis and aggressiveness of sPTC by considering the demographic characteristics of patients with sPTC and the pathologic characteristics of the tumors., Subjects and Methods: The study included 255 patients aged ≥ 18 years who were operated on at Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Medicine (Samsun, Turkey) between June 2008 and December 2021. All patients had histopathologic confirmation of sPTC (≤10 mm) and underwent regular follow-up for at least 36 months., Results: The tumors had a mean size of 5 mm (0.1-10 mm) and were multifocal in 53.7% of patients. Capsular invasion was observed in 9% of patients. Vascular invasion, lymphatic invasion, and extrathyroidal invasion were present in 2%, 5.5%, and 0.8% of patients, respectively. Metastatic cervical lymph nodes were observed in 9.4% of patients. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, tumor size (odds ratio [OR] 1.380, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.106-1.722, p = 0.004) and sex (OR 4.233, 95% CI 1.355-13.226, p = 0.013) were the main predictive factors influencing lymph node metastasis. Tumors > 5 mm, compared with tumors ≤ 5 mm, had higher rates of multifocality (p = 0.009), parenchymal invasion (p = 0.008), calcifications (p = 0.001), microscopic lymphatic invasion (p = 0.002), and presence of metastatic lymph nodes (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight important factors to consider in making decisions about prophylactic central compartment neck dissection in patients with sPTCs, particularly those with clinically node-negative tumors., Competing Interests: Disclosure: no potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported.

COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory system. What comes after the disease is now a greater concern for the scientific world. It is remarkable for causing endocrine organ involvement, particularly in the adrenal glands. However, its effect on the adrenal gland has not been fully elucidated. A case of primary adrenal insufficiency after COVID-19. A 31-year-old female patient who presented with complaints of weakness, anorexia, nausea, recent onset of vomiting, dizziness, and low blood pressure for two months was admitted to the outpatient Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism. After discharge, the patient had routine follow-ups, and here we present the information on the first and seventh month after discharge. The patient was diagnosed with primary adrenal insufficiency with cortisol <0.054 µg/dL and adrenocorticotropic hormone >1200 pg/mL in the laboratory. In the non-contrast computed tomography taken in the adrenal protocol, the stem and leaves of both adrenal glands are significantly thinned and appear atrophic, the right adrenal gland is hardly distinguished. Hydrocortisone was started. All complaints were resolved within a week, except hyperpigmentation, which was resolved six months later after treatment. Nitric oxide NO, mediates inflammatory and thrombotic processes and designing biomaterials capable of releasing NO in contact with biological tissues is considered to be a major factor aimed at improving their bio- and haemocompatibility and antibacterial properties. Their NO-releasing capacity however is limited by the amount of the NO-containing substance incorporated in the bulk or immobilised on the surface of a biomaterial. An alternative approach is based on the design of a material generating nitric oxide from endogenous NO bearing metabolites by their catalytic decomposition. It offers, at least in theory, an unlimited source of NO for as long as the material remains in contact with blood and the catalyst maintains its activity. In this paper we studied the catalytic properties of novel nanostructured CuO/SiO 2 catalysts in generating NO by decomposition of S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) in vitro. CuO/SiO 2 catalysts with different CuO loadings were synthesized by chemisorption of copper(ii) acetylacetonate on fumed nanosilica followed by calcination. CuO content was controlled by a number of chemisorption-calcination cycles. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the formation of CuO/SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) with particle size of CuO phase in the range from 71 to 88 nm. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed a uniform distribution of NPs without their sintering or agglomeration. All the materials of the CuO/SiO 2 NP series exhibited NO-generating activity from GSNO confirmed by the Griess assay and by measuring the concentration of nitrite and nitrate anions in model solutions such as phosphate buffered saline and bovine serum. This activity is dependent on the material specific surface area and CuO exposure on the surface rather than CuO bulk content. The rate of NO production increased at higher initial concentration of the NO-bearing substrate studied in the range between 0.01 mM and 1.0 mM RSNO, which covers its physiological level. CuO/SiO 2 NPs can be used to design polymers with NO generating properties at blood-biomaterial interface which are expected to have improved biocompatibility thus enhancing their potential for medical applications such as surgical tubing, peripheral venous catheters, auxiliary blood circulation devices and drug-eluting balloons.

Valeric acid is an important renewable platform chemical that can be produced efficiently from lignocellulosic biomass. Upgrading of valeric acid by catalytic pyrolysis has the potential to produce value added biofuels and chemicals on an industrial scale. Understanding the different mechanisms involved in the thermal transformations of valeric acid on the surface of nanometer-sized oxides is important for the development of efficient heterogeneously catalyzed pyrolytic conversion techniques. In this work, the thermal decomposition of valeric acid on the surface of nanoscale SiO 2 , γ-Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2 /SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 and TiO 2 /SiO 2 has been investigated by temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD MS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has also been used to investigate the structure of valeric acid complexes on the oxide surfaces. Two main products of pyrolytic conversion were observed to be formed depending on the nano-catalyst used-dibutylketone and propylketene. Mechanisms of ketene and ketone formation from chemisorbed fragments of valeric acid are proposed and the kinetic parameters of the corresponding reactions were calculated. It was found that the activation energy of ketenization decreases in the order SiO 2 >γ-Al 2 O 3 >TiO 2 /SiO 2 >Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 , and the activation energy of ketonization decreases in the order γ-Al 2 O 3 >CeO 2 /SiO 2 . Phenyl, p-tolyl, and p-tert-butylphenyl beta-1-thio-N-acetylglucosaminides were synthesized by the treatment of thiophenols with peracetate of alpha-D-glucosaminyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine or under the conditions of phase-transfer catalysis with quaternary ammonium salts. The compounds synthesized were used for obtaining of glycosides of 4,6-O-isopropylidene-N-acetylmuramic acid, which were coupled with L-Ala-D-Glu(NH2)-OBzl and then deprotected to obtain the target aryl beta-thioglycosides of N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine (MDP). The aryl beta-thioglycosides of MDP were found to stimulate an antibacterial resistance toward Staphylococcus aureus in mice. The reliable induction of the spontaneous activity of natural killers in the population of blood mononuclear cells was observed only for phenyl beta-thio-MDP at a dose of 200 microg/ml. Hemodynamic properties of strophanthidine acetate have been assessed in children with II to III degree cardiovascular failure aged 1 to 14 years. The effect of the cardiac glycoside on central hemodynamic parameters has been assessed by the findings of ECG, impedance plethysmography, and phase analysis of the left ventricular systole. The onset of a negative chronotropic and a positive inotropic effect at the first minute after the drug administration has been revealed. The maximum effect was registered at the 15th minute and lasted for 60 minutes. Thus, a prompt development of a cardiotropic effect makes strophanthidine acetate the most beneficial agent for the treatment of acute heart failure in children.
