Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are effective as a sentinel to assess environmental contaminants, particularly particulate matter (PM). Particulate matter (2.5 µm and 10 µm) exposure had deleterious impacts on the foraging performances of Apis mellifera in the treated area, hence expressing an average foraging rate and speed of 3.0 ± 0.13 flowers/min and 4.53 ± 0.45 sec/flower respectively in non-caged plots. Apis dorsata showed a similar pattern in the experimental area and indicated an average rate and speed of 3.39 ± 0.19 flowers/min and 4.46 ± 0.21 sec/flower respectively. A depressed bee population was observed in particulate matter simulated hives, hence reflecting smaller broods and lesser honey storage. The rate of non-emerging offspring cells was high (333.2 ± 48.92 and 200.8 ± 36.63) than non-incense controlled hive boxes (2.6 ± 0.58 and 1.1 ± 0.32) during experimental seasons. The statistical results elucidated a significant relation of PM with larval emergence in incense controlled colonies. The PM substantially degraded the olfaction and flight performance of Apis mellifera visiting bowl traps installed near incense controlled colonies. Comparison between bee visitation rate and bowls installed at 4 feet height asides the boxes were well marked with a high bee visiting rates towards blue and white bowls installed at 4 and 2.5 feet height in controlled territories. An increasing trend of Na (38.51 ± 0.14 and 43.56 ± 0.23) and K (24.99 ± 0.13 and 45.35 ± 0.35) was evidenced in body fluids of Apis mellifera exposed to agro-industrial PM. The interpretations of experimental findings for PM effects on bees’ behaviour and development are discussed for the prevention of these vital pollinators.

Zero tillage straw retained with optimum N is an important strategy to increase soil fertility and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yield in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-cotton system. A 3 years field experiment was conducted during 2014, 2015 and 2016 to study the impact of two tillage techniques [zero tillage plus wheat straw retained- ZTsr and conventional tillage-CT straw burnt (CTsb, with disc plow, tiller, rotavator, and leveling operations)] and four nitrogen rates namely 0, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha-1 on cotton yield and soil fertility. Results indicated that bolls/plant–1, weight per boll, seed cotton yields, lint percentage and N recovery efficiency were highest with 150 kg N ha–1. Interaction tillage into N indicated that ZTsr had graeter bolls plant-1, bolls weight, seed cotton yields, lint percentage and N recovery efficiency compared to CTsb. ZTsr had more soil organic matter (SOM) and total soil nitrogen (TSN) compared to CTsb. ZTsr with 150 kg nitrogen per hectare enhanced cotton yield and soil fertility on sustainable basis in arid environment of Dera Ismail Khan.

Lepidoptera is the second most diverse insect order outnumbered only by the Coeleptera. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the major target site for insecticides. Extensive use of insecticides, to inhibit the function of this enzyme, have resulted in the development of insecticide resistance. Complete knowledge of the target proteins is very important to know the cause of resistance. Computational annotation of insect acetylcholinesterase can be helpful for the characterization of this important protein. Acetylcholinesterase of fourteen lepidopteran insect pest species was annotated by using different bioinformatics tools. AChE in all the species was hydrophilic and thermostable. All the species showed lower values for instability index except L. orbonalis, S. exigua and T. absoluta. Highest percentage of Arg, Asp, Asn, Gln and Cys were recorded in P. rapae. High percentage of Cys and Gln might be reason for insecticide resistance development in P. rapae. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the AChE in T. absoluta, L. orbonalis and S. exigua are closely related and emerged from same primary branch. Three functional motifs were predicted in eleven species while only two were found in L. orbonalis, S. exigua and T. absoluta. AChE in eleven species followed secretory pathway and have signal peptides. No signal peptides were predicted for S. exigua, L. orbonalis and T. absoluta and follow non secretory pathway. Arginine methylation and cysteine palmotylation was found in all species except S. exigua, L. orbonalis and T. absoluta. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor was predicted in only nine species.

The current study examined the determinants of electricity consumption and also intends to forecast the electricity consumption in Pakistan. The study has used time series data analysis, applied Johansen Cointegration Test, error correction mechanisms and regression for examining determinants and autoregressive integrated moving average model is used for forecasting. The study has used times series secondary annual data on different variables for the period ranging from 1970 to 2018. The results of the study showed that gross domestic product and population have positive impact on electricity consumption. Whereas, National output (GDP) is statistically significant in the determination of total electricity consumption. The results also indicated that increase in the real economic activities has increases the total electricity consumption. Furthermore, the results of electricity consumption model also suggest that electricity price have negative impact on total electricity consumption. As electricity demand is inelastic to electricity price and income, it indicates that fewer substitutes of electricity are available in the market. Hence electricity is essential component of energy for economy. The research paper attempts to investigate the connection between Ownership Structure and Audit Committee Effectiveness on discretionary accruals in Pakistan. This study analyzed 5 years of data over the period of 2013 to 2017 of 169 listed firms of the Pakistan Stock Exchanges (PSX). The data is panel and it is analyzed with the fixed-effect regression to check the association between ownership structure and audit committee effectiveness on discretionary accruals. The findings of this article show that the effectiveness of an audit committee is very instrumental in bringing down the value of discretionary accruals. This paper confirms the view that audit committee effectiveness mitigates discretionary accruals in PSX listed firms, Furthermore, this study found no clue that blocks ownership, management ownership, foreign ownership and institutional ownership constrain discretionary accruals. To the best of researchers’ knowledge, this empirical study is first of its kind in Pakistan. Heavy metals such as zinc, iron, and nickel are necessary to operate the metabolism and physiological process in plants. Other heavy metals such as cadmium, arsenic, lead, mercury, chromium, etc. do not have any known importance in these plant processes. Higher metal levels can hamper these processes due to toxicity but plant have evolved molecular mechanisms to cope with this stress. A wealth of knowledge has been generated on understanding how plants adapt to heavy metals stress by regulating their molecular machinery. Various genes and transcription factors have been identified to play their role in metals stress adaptation. The current chapter focuses on explaining and reviewing the current state of knowledge about transcription factors involved in plant responses to heavy metal stress adaptation.

Sucking pests are major threat to cotton field crop which cause unbearable losses to the crop yield. Aim of the current study was to record seasonal dynamics of major sucking insect pests including whitefly, jassid, thrips and their natural arthropod predators i.e. green lacewings and spiders in cotton field plots. The effects of surrounding field crops on pests’ density and predatory efficiency of predators were also recorded. For sampling and survey of insects, the visual counting was found to be the most efficient method for recording the abundance of insects, trailed by net sweeping and tapping. Whitefly was the most dominant sucking pest found on the vegetative stage of cotton, followed by jassid and thrips. Fluctuated populations of predatory arthropods, spiders and green lacewings were also recorded during whole cropping season however, the densities of pests and predators varied with crop phenology. Spiders’ population was encouraging at both vegetative and flowering stage and also the same trend of jassid and whitefly were observed at both stages of the crop. Surrounding habitats showed non-significant effect on population densities of insect pests and predators. For abiotic factors, the spiders showed strong positive correlation with humidity and temperature. However, green lacewing was only positively correlated with humidity. On the other hand, the populations of whitefly, jassid and thrips showed non-significant correlation with both temperature and humidity. Overall densities of sucking insect pests were found above economic threshold level. The plant age, crop stage and surrounding habitats effect on the population fluctuation of pests as well as the predators’ abundance. The future studies are also warranted to investigate the altered habitats and multiple trap cropping to find out their impact on unattended insect predators and parasitoids in cotton crop. Resumo As pragas sugadoras são uma grande ameaça para a cultura do algodão, causando perdas insuportáveis no rendimento da cultura. O objetivo do estudo atual foi registrar a dinâmica sazonal das principais pragas de insetos sugadores, incluindo mosca-branca, jassid, tripes e seus artrópodes predadores naturais, ou seja, crisopídeos e aranhas verdes em parcelas de algodão. Os efeitos das plantações circundantes na densidade de pragas e na eficiência predatória de predadores também foram registrados. Para amostragem e pesquisa de insetos, a contagem visual foi considerada o método mais eficiente para registrar a abundância de insetos, seguido por varredura e batida de rede. A mosca-branca foi a praga sugadora mais dominante encontrada na fase vegetativa do algodoeiro, seguida pelo jassid e tripes. Populações flutuantes de artrópodes predadores, aranhas e crisálidas também foram registradas durante toda a safra, no entanto as densidades de pragas e predadores variaram com a fenologia da cultura. A população de aranhas foi encorajadora tanto na fase vegetativa como na floração e também a mesma tendência de jassid e mosca-branca foi observada em ambas as fases da cultura. Os habitats circundantes mostraram efeito não significativo nas densidades populacionais de insetos-praga e predadores. Para os fatores abióticos, as aranhas apresentaram forte correlação positiva com umidade e temperatura. No entanto, lacewing verde foi apenas positivamente correlacionado com a umidade. Por outro lado, as populações de mosca-branca, jassid e tripes apresentaram correlação não significativa com temperatura e umidade. As densidades gerais de pragas sugadoras de insetos foram encontradas acima do nível do limiar econômico. A idade da planta, o estágio da cultura e os habitats circundantes afetam a flutuação populacional de pragas, bem como a abundância de predadores. Os estudos futuros também são necessários para investigar os habitats alterados e cultivo com armadilhas múltiplas para descobrir seu impacto sobre predadores de insetos e parasitoides desacompanhados na cultura do algodão.

Leaf rust is a devastating disease in wheat crop. The disease forecasting models can facilitate the economic and effective use of fungicides and assist in limiting crop yield losses. In this study, six wheat cultivars were screened against leaf rust at two locations, during three consecutive growing seasons. Subsequently, the stepwise regression analysis was employed to analyze the correlation of six epidemiological variables (minimum temperature, maximum temperature, minimum relative humidity, maximum relative humidity, rainfall and wind speed) with disease severity and yield loss (%). Disease predictive models were developed for each cultivar for final leaf rust severity and yield loss prediction. Principally, all epidemiological variables indicated a positive association with leaf rust severity and yield loss (%) except minimum relative humidity. The effectiveness of disease predictive models was estimated using coefficient of determination (R2) values for all models. Then, these predictive models were validated to forecast disease severity and yield loss at another location in Faisalabad. The R2 values of all disease predictive models for each of the tested cultivars were high, evincing that our regression models could be effectively employed to predict leaf rust disease severity and anticipated yield loss. The validation results explained 99% variability, suggesting a highly accurate prediction of the two variables (leaf rust severity and yield loss). The models developed in this research can be used by wheat farmers to forecast disease epidemics and to make disease management decisions accordingly.

The ongoing outbreak of coronavirus disease COVID-19 is significantly implicated by global heterogeneity in the genome organization of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The causative agents of global heterogeneity in the whole genome of SARS-CoV-2 are not well characterized due to the lack of comparative study of a large enough sample size from around the globe to reduce the standard deviation to the acceptable margin of error. To better understand the SARS-CoV-2 genome architecture, we have performed a comprehensive analysis of codon usage bias of sixty (60) strains to get a snapshot of its global heterogeneity. Our study shows a relatively low codon usage bias in the SARS-CoV-2 viral genome globally, with nearly all the over-preferred codons’ A.U. ended. We concluded that the SARS-CoV-2 genome is primarily shaped by mutation pressure, however, marginal selection pressure cannot be overlooked. Within the A/U rich virus genomes of SARS-CoV-2, the standard deviation in G.C. (42.91% ± 5.84%) and the GC3 value (30.14% ± 6.93%) points towards global heterogeneity of the virus. Several SARS-CoV-2 viral strains were originated from different viral lineages at the exact geographic location also supports this fact. Taking all together, these findings suggest that the general root ancestry of the global genomes are different with different genome’s level adaptation to host. This research may provide new insights into the codon patterns, host adaptation, and global heterogeneity of SARS-CoV-2.

Medical staff is vital for helping society through a health crisis, human-made or natural disaster, and pandemic. This study aims to investigate the medical staff's work-related burnout during Covid-19 and their willingness to work when they are most needed. The cross-sectional design was used, and an online survey was conducted through snowball sampling. Sample comprised on 250 participants (male = 89 & female= 161). The study's inclusion criteria were that only those medical staff of different hospitals was approached to collect data performed inwards isolated for Covid-19 treatment corona isolation wards. Maslach burnout inventory (MBI-HSS) and willingness to work (WTW) tools were used to collect data. Descriptive and Partial least square analysis was utilized to evaluate the relationships. The Coefficient of determination or R-Square value was 0.299, which means 29.9% or 30% of the work burnout variation was due to the impact of emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment. Perceived danger, Role Competence, Self-Efficacy, and Sense of duty significantly impacted the willingness to work. Despite the workload and perceived risk, 42.6% of participants agreed to work if their department had to need their services, while 55.2% of participants agreed to work whether their department asked them or not. Government and hospital management should adopt a proactive and positive response during the pandemic to eradicate the employee stress and adopt adequate steps to improve the willingness to work with medical staff.

The predatory efficacy of phytoseiid mites, Neoseiulus barkeri was evaluated against onion thrips in controlled conditions. Different larval instars and adult thrips were provided as prey in different combinations (choice) or separately (no-choice). In choice test, no significant difference was observed in total thrips consumption per day. But in both observation hours (12 h or 24 h), a significant difference was observed between the feeding of immature and adult thrips. In a no-choice test,when we confined N. barkeri to feed on a specified diet of T. tabaci (first instar, second instar, or adults separately), a significant difference in total thrips consumption per day was observed in each prey group. In both tests, predatory mites fed more on first larval instar thrips compared to second larval instar and adults. However, consumption rate was rather higher during initial feeding hours (12 h) and slowed down later (24 h); this may be due to aggressive predation initially. The findings suggest that N. barkeri feed more on younger instars of T. tabaci and if these predators are released during early pest outbreak it will control the thrips population.

The current study sought to ascertain the impact of inter-parent conflicts on teenage psychological distress, social and academic adjustment and examine the suicide ideation during the COVID-19. The results found to be alarming as 22% of the individuals displayed suicidal tendencies, with 9% having attempted suicide once, 4.6% having tried suicide twice, and 11% stating that they were likely to do so again. Therefore, the media and the government might host awareness programs and counseling initiatives to promote mental health and prevent suicidal behavior. Moreover, parents may be educated on community level, about the effect of inter-parental arguments on the mental health of their children.

RNA interference (RNAi) of vital insect genes is a potential tool for targeted pest control. However, selection of the right target genes is a challenge because the RNAi efficacy is known to vary among insect species. Cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis, is a phloem-feeding economically important crop pest. We evaluated the RNAi of 2 vital genes, Bursicon (PsBur) and V-ATPase (PsV-ATPase) as potential targets in P. solenopsis for its control. PCR fragments of PsBur and PsV-ATPase were amplified using cDNA synthesized from the total RNA. The PCR amplicons were cloned into Potato virus X (PVX) to develop recombinant PVX for the inoculation of Nicotiana tabacum plants for bioassays with healthy P. solenopsis. Reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to validate the expression of transgenes in the recombinant-PVX-inoculated plants (treated), and suppression of the target genes in the mealybugs exposed to them. The RT-PCR confirmed the expression of transgenes in the treated plants. Mealybug individuals on treated plants either died or showed physical deformities. Further, the population of mealybug was significantly reduced by feeding on N. tabacum expressing RNAi triggers against PsBur and PsV-ATPase. The results conclude that RNAi is activated in P. solenopsis by feeding on N. tabacum expressing RNAi triggering elements of PsBur and PsV-ATPase genes through recombinant PVX vector. Further, V-ATPase and Bursicon genes are potential targets for RNAi-mediated control of P. solenopsis.

Nanoparticles are known bio elicitors in plant biotechnology. Different concentrations of ZnO, CuO and CoO nanoparticles were used for the enhanced accumulation of secondary metabolites and antioxidant activities in the callus derived from root, shoot and leaf of Artemisia annua L. Biomass of callus was somehow affected on high concentrations of Nps. Phenolic content was observed maximum (60µg) in shoot callus at 0.1mg/l of CuONps. Total antioxidant activity was observed maximum (33µg) in root callus at 0.1mg/l of ZnOnps. Total reducing power maximum (33µg) was observed in root callus at concentration of 0.05 mg/l of CoONps. Maximum radical scavenging activity was observed in shoot callus at 0.05mg/l of ZnONps. Rutin gallic acid and caffic acid were also determined in most of the samples by HPLC. The study concludes that different Nps have positive effect on the induction of secondary metabolites in A.annua plant. Diferentes concentrações de nanopartículas de ZnO, CuO e CoO foram usadas para o acúmulo aumentado de metabólitos secundários e atividades antioxidantes no calo derivado da raiz, parte aérea e folha de Artemisiaannua L. A biomassa do calo foi de alguma forma afetada em altas concentrações de Nps. O conteúdo fenólico foi observado no máximo (60 µg) no calo da parte aérea a 0,1 mg / l de CuONps. A atividade antioxidante total foi observada no máximo (33µg) no calo radicular a 0,1mg / l de ZnOnps. O poder de redução total máximo (33µg) foi observado no calo radicular na concentração de 0,05 mg / l de CoONps. Atividade máxima de eliminação de radicais foi observada no calo da parte aérea a 0,05mg / l de ZnONps. O ácido rutina-gálico e o ácido caffic também foram determinados na maioria das amostras por HPLC. O estudo conclui que diferentes Nps têm efeito positivo na indução de metabólitos secundários na planta de A.annua.

A comprehensive germplasm screening study of 855 wheat advanced lines was conducted at Wheat Research Institute, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute Faisalabad to identify new sources of leaf rust resistance during crop seasons 2015-2017. In primary evaluation, 112 advanced lines were selected having high phenotypic uniformity for further testing at wheat research Institute Faisalabad, a hotspot for leaf rust. The second round of evaluation exhibited 54 lines having durable type resistance against leaf rust. Avirulence to virulence formula showed that 7 Lr genes remained most effective at all four locations. Epidemiological factors indicated great influence on the progress of leaf rust disease development. Maximum lines showed statistically significant correlation with all environmental conditions. A positive linear relationship was observed between minimum and maximum temperature, relative humidity, rainfall and wind speed. It was concluded that resistant wheat advanced lines and Lr genes identified under natural environmental conditions can be an excellent source to be employed for breeding resistance into the background of high yielding wheat cultivars through molecular or conventional breeding technique, and are expected to contribute toward food security at national and global levels.

Among responsible factors for getting maximum yield of cotton, appropriate sowing method has prime importance, as it plays a decisive role in proper crop stand and root penetration and development. Furthermore, suitable plant-to-plant and row-to-row adjustment accelerates the utilization of available resources. Cotton is an important cash crop besides being a big earning source for many leading cotton-producing countries of the world. Various planting techniques including flat planting by drilling in differently spaced lines, ridge sowing and raised bed planting are being practised in different countries of the world. Among these methods, each has associated merits and demerits under prevailing soil and climatic conditions. Studies have revealed that higher yield targets can be achieved through exploiting all aforementioned planting techniques, but management factor makes a real difference under all conditions. Due to specific climatic requirement, cotton crop has to deal with a variety of pests including insect, disease-causing pathogens and weeds, so, through good management practices, we can save this white gold from yield losses and get targeted yield.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), roughly one-third of the total food produced is lost globally. The major cause of this wastage is the perishability of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, researchers have endeavored to develop an effective preservation technique. Our study explored the potential application of spider silk as an odourless and edible preservative coating for fruits. The spider silk was collected from spiders reared in the laboratory, following by degumming and dissolution to formulate the silk solution. For this study, apricots were selected as the model fruit. The apricots were dip coated with the formulated silk solution and allowed to dry. In order to enhance the beta sheet content of the silk coating, the fruits were exposed to water annealing for varying intervals of time under vacuum condition. The effect of silk coating and water annealing time period on preservation of fruits was then evaluated morphologically and gravimetrically. The results showed that the fruits, which were used as control, exhibited a greater degree of water loss and suffered from fungal attack. In contrast, the silk coated fruits showed less water loss and were protected from fungal attack. Therefore, the study provides compelling evidence regarding the application of spider silk as a preservative coating. A principal causa deste desperdício é a perecibilidade das frutas e legumes. Portanto, os pesquisadores têm se esforçado para desenvolver uma técnica de preservação eficaz. Nosso estudo explorou a potencial aplicação de seda de aranha como um revestimento conservante inodoro e comestível para frutas. A seda da aranha foi coletada de aranhas criadas em laboratório, seguindo-se a degomagem e dissolução para formular a solução de seda. Para este estudo, os damascos foram selecionados como fruto modelo. Os damascos foram revestidos por imersão com a solução de seda formulada e deixados secar. A fim de aumentar o teor de folhas beta do revestimento de seda, os frutos foram expostos a recozimento de água durante vários intervalos de tempo sob condições de vácuo. O efeito do tempo de recobrimento de seda e recozimento de água na preservação de frutos foi então avaliado morfologicamente e gravimetricamente. Os resultados mostraram que os frutos, utilizados como controle, apresentaram maior grau de perda de água e sofreram ataque fúngico. Em contraste, os frutos revestidos de seda mostraram menos perda de água e foram protegidos contra ataques fúngicos. Portanto, o estudo fornece evidências convincentes sobre a aplicação de seda de aranha como um revestimento conservante.

Resistance evolution in weeds against all major herbicide groups demand investigations to identify various factors responsible for resistance development. Herbicide hormesis has not yet been included in the list of factors promoting the evolution of resistance. Studies were conducted to evaluate the degree of hormesis in fenoxaprop-p-ethyl susceptible and resistant Phalaris minor to provide a first indication of whether hormesis is a potential factor in the development of resistance. In the first experiment, a wide range of doses up to 160% of the recommended field rate was used to identify potential hormetic doses for resistant and susceptible P. minor populations. Doses below 40% have been designated as potential hormetic doses. In the second experiment, ten different doses of fenoxaprop below 40% (0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32% of the recommended rate) were sprayed at the 4-5 leaf stage of both resistant and susceptible P. minor populations. At fifteen days after spraying, dose range of 2-12% and 2-20% caused a significant increase (up to 22% and 24%) in growth traits of susceptible and resistant populations, respectively. At maturity, dose range of 2-12% for susceptible and 2-24% for resistant populations caused a significant increase (up to 20% and 57%) in growth and seed production potential (13% and 17%), respectively. The upper limit of the hormetic dose range (16 to 24%) for the resistant population was inhibitory for the susceptible populations. These results indicate that fenoxaprop hormesis could play a vital role in the evolution of fenoxaprop resistance in P. minor.

To curb the increasing demand for nitrogenous fertilizers, it is imperative to develop new cultivars with comparatively greater nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Nonetheless, so far very meager information is available concerning the variances among barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties for their response to nitrogen deprivation. The current study was carried out to explore the potential of barley genotypes for higher NUE. A hydroponic experiment was conducted at seedling stage to compare the performance of four barley genotypes, ZD9 and XZ149 (with higher NUE) and HXRL and XZ56 (with lower NUE) in response to low (0.1 mM) and normal nitrogen (2 mM) levels. Under low N, all the genotypes expressed less number of tillers, decreased soluble proteins, chlorophyll and N concentrations in both roots and shoots, in comparison with normal N supply. However, significant differences were found among the genotypes. The genotypes with high NUE (ZD9 and XZ149) showed higher N concentration, increased number of tillers, improved chlorophyll and soluble proteins in both roots and shoots as compared to the inefficient ones (HXRL and XZ56). Furthermore, nitrate transporter gene (NRT2.1) showed higher expression under low N, both in roots and leaves of N efficient genotypes, as compared to the N inefficient ones. However, N assimilatory genes (GS1 and GS2) showed higher expression under normal and low N level, in leaves and roots respectively. The outcome of the study revealed that genotypes with higher NUE (ZD9 and XZ149) performed better under reduced N supply, and may require relatively less N fertilizer for normal growth and development, as compared to those with lower NUE. The study also revealed a time-specific expression pattern of studied genes, indicating the duration of low N stress. The current study suggested that future work must involve the time course as a key factor while studying expression patterns of these genes to better understand the genetic basis of low-N tolerance.

Two-year field experiments were conducted to investigate the phytotoxicity of mesquite (Prosopis juliflora) on weed control and yield of wheat in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Mesquite aqueous extracts were prepared with 10, 20, 30 and 40% concentration of leaves, stems, and roots and were compared with tap water (control). These experiments were laid out in a completely randomized block design with four replications. All parameters (weed density, fresh weed biomass, dry weed biomass, chlorophyll content, leaf area index, leaf area duration, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate, plant height and number of tillers) were significantly reduced by applying the mesquite extracts. Among different concentrations, the maximum level (40%) of all three plant parts of mesquite subsequently reduced the study parameters including weed density, fresh and dry weed biomass, leaf area index, leaf area duration, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate, chlorophyll contents, plant height, number of tillers, spike length, number of grains, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, biological yield, harvest index and grain protein content. On the basis of the results, it is concluded that aqueous extracts of mesquite may contain many phytotoxic substances which can negatively affect the growth and yield of agricultural crops; therefore, wheat should not be planted close to mesquite. RESUMO: Experimentos de campo foram conduzidos durante dois anos para investigar a fitotoxicidade da algaroba (Prosopis juliflora) no controle de plantas daninhas e no rendimento do trigo nos períodos de 2013-14 e 2014-15. Foram preparados extratos aquosos de folhas, caules e raízes de algaroba com concentração de 10, 20, 30 e 40%, os quais foram comparados com água corrente (controle). Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos completamente casualizados com quatro repetições. Todos os parâmetros (densidade de plantas daninhas, biomassa fresca das plantas daninhas, biomassa seca das plantas daninhas, teor de clorofila, índice de área foliar, duração de área foliar, taxa de crescimento da cultura, taxa de assimilação líquida, altura da planta e número de perfilhos) sofreram redução significativa pela aplicação dos extratos de algaroba. Entre as diferentes concentrações, o nível máximo (40%) das três partes das plantas da algaroba reduziu os parâmetros do estudo, incluindo densidade das plantas daninhas, biomassa fresca e seca das plantas daninhas, índice de área foliar, duração da área foliar, taxa de crescimento da cultura, taxa de assimilação líquida, teores de clorofila, altura das plantas, número de perfilhos, comprimento da espiga, número de grãos, peso de mil grãos, rendimento de grãos, rendimento biológico, índice de colheita e teor de proteína do grão. Com base nos resultados, conclui-se que os extratos aquosos da algaroba são capazes de conter muitas substâncias fitotóxicas que podem exercer efeito negativo no crescimento e no rendimento das culturas agrícolas. Por essa razão, o trigo não deve ser plantado perto da algaroba.

The wolf spider Lycosa terrestris (Araneae: Lycosidae) is a well known arthropod containing toxic compounds. It has significant predatory potential in addition to its uses in medicinal and insecticidal formulation. Current investigations were aimed to extract and partially characterize the venom of L. terrestris and the susceptibility tests to evaluate antibacterial potential of venom supernatant and venom pellets against four pathogenic bacterial strains i.e., Gram negative Acinetobacter sp. and Pasteurella sp. and Gram Positive Staphylococcus sp. and Streptococcus sp. Results of this study revealed that the venom of L. terrestris contained six relatively high molecular weight peptides ranging from 125 kDa to 35 kDa. Moreover, results of the susceptibility test confirmed the bacteriostatic action of venom supernatant against aerobic Gram negative Acinetobacter sp. in dose dependent manner.
