The objective of this study was to evaluate the properties of garlic as a growth promoter in larvae of angelfish Pterophyllum scalare and its benefits during transport of juveniles of this species. The experiment was conducted in recirculation aquaculture system, consisting of 20 tanks of 40 L equipped with independent water input and output. We used 1,400 larvae distributed among five treatments, with four repetitions, which totaled 20 experimental units. The treatments were 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg of garlic extract per kilo of feed. The results showed that the inclusion of levels of garlic extract in the feed did not significantly effect the fish's development or their transport. Neither did the inclusion of levels of garlic extract affect the survival of the larvae during the trial period. New research with extracts of higher dosages should be performed to elucidate the effect of garlic extract as a growth promoter.

Three experiments were done with different particle sizes of corn feed on its zootechnical performance, passing rate and apparent digestibility of juvenile tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). In the first, 200 juveniles were used and distributed in 20 tanks (220 L), 10 fish per unit (four replicates). The experimental system used to record passage time was composed of five incubators with 200 L. In the second, 75 juveniles were used per 55 days (three replications). In the third, 75 juveniles were used and distributed in five incubators of 200 L. All experiments were performed randomly. Different linear behavior treatments were observed for apparent digestibility of crude protein; and the smaller particle size (150 μm) had better results digestibility. smaller particle size of the corn had better results, affected the growth performance of tambaqui and the apparent digestibility of crude protein and ether extract. Thus, is recommended that a particle size of 150 μm of corn be used for tambaqui.

Temperature is an environmental factor that influences the development of fish, and when changed abruptly can lead to high mortality. Some species of fish are influenced by this factor, exhibiting a longer time for embryonic development and time to first feeding. This study aims to evaluate the effect of water temperature on embryonic and larval development up to first feeding, to describe the time in hours post fertilization (hpf) of the emergence of different structures and to determine the best hatching rate and survival of animals under different treatments. Five different egg incubation temperatures were used (24, 26, 28, 30 or 32°C, respectively). The eggs were observed at regular intervals of 30 min up to 24 h, every 2 h until 48 h and every 4 h until the display of first feeding in all treatments. Embryonic development was longer for eggs incubated at 24°C and the best results for hatching rate and survival of spawning efficiency were at 28°C. We recommend that incubation of Trichogaster leeri eggs is carried out at 28°C up to the first feeding of larvae.

Introduction: The lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) corresponds to changes in the filling or emptying of urine caused by neurogenic, anatomical and functional alterations., Objective: To evaluate the impact of treatment in children and adolescents with LUTD., Methods: Historical cohort of 15 year follow-up with the participation of 192 patients (123F, 69M), aged 0.1 to 16.8 years, analyzed at admission (T0) and at final follow-up (T1). Most patients belong to a neurologic bladder dysfunction group (60.4%). The treatment was uroterapy with behavioral and cognitive intervention, timed voiding, oral hydration, laxative diet, biofeedback, sacral nerve stimulation, clean intermittent catheterization (CIC), anticholinergic therapy, rectal enema, treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI) and, in refractory cases, surgical procedures such as continent and incontinent urinary diversion (vesicostomy), bladder augmentation and conduit for performing antegrade colonic enema., Results: The main symptoms were daytime urinary incontinence (82.3%), the non-monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (78.6%), fecal incontinence (54.2%) and constipation (47.9%). There was a significant reduction of urinary tract infection (p = 0.0027), daytime urinary incontinence (p < 0.001), nocturnal enuresis (p < 0.001), fecal incontinence (p = 0.010) and of vesicoureteral reflux (p = 0.01). There was significant increase in the use of CIC (p = 0.021), of anticholinergic therapy (p < 0.001) and decrease of chemoprophylaxis (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: This study showed that treatment of LUTD in children must be individualized, and requires constant monitoring of clinical, laboratory and imaging to minimize the risk of kidney damage.

Humans sleep approximately a third of their lifetime. The observation that individuals with either long or short sleep duration show associations with metabolic syndrome and psychiatric disorders suggests that the length of sleep is adaptive. Although sleep duration can be influenced by photoperiod (season) and phase of entrainment (chronotype), human familial sleep disorders indicate that there is a strong genetic modulation of sleep. Therefore, we conducted high-density genome-wide association studies for sleep duration in seven European populations (N=4251). We identified an intronic variant (rs11046205; P=3.99 × 10(-8)) in the ABCC9 gene that explains ≈5% of the variation in sleep duration. An influence of season and chronotype on sleep duration was solely observed in the replication sample (N=5949). Meta-analysis of the associations found in a subgroup of the replication sample, chosen for season of entry and chronotype, together with the discovery results showed genome-wide significance. RNA interference knockdown experiments of the conserved ABCC9 homologue in Drosophila neurons renders flies sleepless during the first 3 h of the night. ABCC9 encodes an ATP-sensitive potassium channel subunit (SUR2), serving as a sensor of intracellular energy metabolism.

Background: It has been suggested that genes involved in the reproductive biology of insect disease vectors are potential targets for future alternative methods of control. Little is known about the molecular biology of reproduction in phlebotomine sand flies and there is no information available concerning genes that are expressed in male reproductive organs of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis and a species complex., Methods/principal Findings: We generated 2678 high quality ESTs ("Expressed Sequence Tags") of L. longipalpis male reproductive organs that were grouped in 1391 non-redundant sequences (1136 singlets and 255 clusters). BLAST analysis revealed that only 57% of these sequences share similarity with a L. longipalpis female EST database. Although no more than 36% of the non-redundant sequences showed similarity to protein sequences deposited in databases, more than half of them presented the best-match hits with mosquito genes. Gene ontology analysis identified subsets of genes involved in biological processes such as protein biosynthesis and DNA replication, which are probably associated with spermatogenesis. A number of non-redundant sequences were also identified as putative male reproductive gland proteins (mRGPs), also known as male accessory gland protein genes (Acps)., Conclusions: The transcriptome analysis of L. longipalpis male reproductive organs is one step further in the study of the molecular basis of the reproductive biology of this important species complex. It has allowed the identification of genes potentially involved in spermatogenesis as well as putative mRGPs sequences, which have been studied in many insect species because of their effects on female post-mating behavior and physiology and their potential role in sexual selection and speciation. These data open a number of new avenues for further research in the molecular and evolutionary reproductive biology of sand flies.

Background: The phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera:Psychodidae) Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia Lutz & Neiva 1912 and Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani Antunes & Coutinho 1932 are two very closely related species and important vectors of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. Two single-locus studies have revealed evidence for introgression between the two species in both mitochondrial and nuclear genomes. These findings have prompted the development of a multilocus approach to investigate in more detail the genetic exchanges between the two species., Results: We analyzed ten nuclear loci using the "isolation with migration" model implemented in the IM program, finding evidence for introgression from L. intermedia towards L. whitmani in three loci. These results confirm that introgression is occurring between the two species and suggest variation in the effects of gene flow among the different regions of the genome., Conclusion: The demonstration that these two vectors are not fully reproductively isolated might have important epidemiological consequences as these species could be exchanging genes controlling aspects of their vectorial capacity.

Background and Objectives: Honeybees first used in the honey production came from Europe. They were gentle but their productivity was very low. In 1956 it was brought from Africa some species of honeybees that were more productible but also extremely aggressive. There was an accidental release of those bees, that proliferated by hybridizing with the European honeybees generating a new specimen of bees: the Africanized honeybees. The objective of this article is to suggest a pattern of treatment for this poisoning syndrome, because of the crescent number of these attacks and a few data about it., Case Report: Male, 19 years old, soldier that in the course of his military training was attacked by a swarm of Africanized honeybees., Conclusions: As the Africanized honeybees are very aggressive, they attack their victims with lots of stings releasing a large quantity of venom. The reactions to the stings can vary from a local inflammatory reaction in non sensibilized people, hipersensibility reaction and anaphylactic shock in sensibilized people and poisoning syndrome when there is a big amount of inoculated venom. The medical attendance to this kind of accident must be as fast as possible. It must be done an adequate clinical support and a quick mechanical remotion of the stingers. The hemodynamic stabilization is a very important point.

The production of phospholipase and proteinase exoenzymes was evaluated in seventy nine samples of Candida isolated from the oral cavity of patients with oral lesions characteristic of candidosis and from individuals presenting a clinically normal mouth, attended at the University of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto USP. Among the strains of C. albicans isolated from oral lesions, the phospholipase and proteinase were detected in 83.3% and 66.7%, respectively. C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis produced only proteinase. Regarding the isolated strains from niches without lesions, out of a total of 32 C. albicans, 71.9% presented phospholipase and 68.7% proteinase. C. tropicalis only presented the enzyme proteinase, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. guilliermondii and Candida spp did not present any of the exoenzymes. Among the samples of C. albicans from both groups, the enzymotype 22 (positive phospholipase and proteinase weakly positive), was prevalent. Different enzymotypes of the same species were detected in samples collected from the same patient.

The influence of gross caries removal and temporary filling of dental caries with a zinc oxide eugenol cement on the salivary level of mutans streptococci (MS) was studied in 14 children, 6 to 8 years of age. Forty-eight hours after filling all cavities, there was a significant decrease in the level of these cariogenic microorganisms. However, after 30 days, the salivary level of mutans streptococci was similar to that detected initially.
