1. CellOMaps: A Compact Representation for Robust Classification of Lung Adenocarcinoma Growth Patterns

Abstract: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a morphologically heterogeneous disease, characterized by five primary histological growth patterns. The classification of such patterns is crucial due to their direct relation to prognosis but the high subjectivity and observer variability pose a major challenge. Although several studies have developed machine learning methods for growth pattern classification, they either only report the predominant pattern per slide or lack proper evaluation. We propose a generalizable machine learning pipeline capable of classifying lung tissue into one of the five patterns or as non-tumor. The proposed pipeline's strength lies in a novel compact Cell Organization Maps (cellOMaps) representation that captures the cellular spatial patterns from Hematoxylin and Eosin whole slide images (WSIs). The proposed pipeline provides state-of-the-art performance on LUAD growth pattern classification when evaluated on both internal unseen slides and external datasets, significantly outperforming the current approaches. In addition, our preliminary results show that the model's outputs can be used to predict patients Tumor Mutational Burden (TMB) levels.

Abstract: Physics-based numerical models have been the bedrock of atmospheric sciences for decades, offering robust solutions but often at the cost of significant computational resources. Deep learning (DL) models have emerged as powerful tools in meteorology, capable of analyzing complex weather and climate data by learning intricate dependencies and providing rapid predictions once trained. While these models demonstrate promising performance in weather prediction, often surpassing traditional physics-based methods, they still face critical challenges. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of recent deep learning and foundation models for weather prediction. We propose a taxonomy to classify existing models based on their training paradigms: deterministic predictive learning, probabilistic generative learning, and pre-training and fine-tuning. For each paradigm, we delve into the underlying model architectures, address major challenges, offer key insights, and propose targeted directions for future research. Furthermore, we explore real-world applications of these methods and provide a curated summary of open-source code repositories and widely used datasets, aiming to bridge research advancements with practical implementations while fostering open and trustworthy scientific practices in adopting cutting-edge artificial intelligence for weather prediction. 3. High-pressure growth effect on the properties of high-Tc iron-based superconductors: A short review

Abstract: The high-pressure growth technique is a vital approach that facilitates the stabilization of new phases and allows for meticulous control of structural parameters, which significantly impact electronic and magnetic properties. We present a short review of our ongoing investigations into various families of iron-based superconductors (IBS), employing the high-gas pressure and high-temperature synthesis (HP-HTS) method. This technique is capable of producing the gas pressures up to 1.8 GPa and a heating temperature of up to 1700 {\deg}C through a three-zone furnace within a cylindrical chamber. Different kinds of IBS samples are prepared using HPHTS and characterized through various measurements to reach the final conclusions. The results demonstrate that the high-pressure growth technique significantly enhances the properties of IBS, including the transition temperature, critical current density, and pinning force. In addition, the quality of the samples and their density are improved through the intergrain connections. Furthermore, the comprehensive evaluations and investigations prove that a growth pressure of 0.5 GPa is sufficient for producing high-quality IBS bulks under the optimized synthesis conditions., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

4. High-pressure growth effects on the superconducting properties of Sm-based oxypnictide superconductors

Abstract: High-pressure synthesis can be an effective method for improving the sample quality of materials as well as their superconducting properties. In this paper, the synthesis process of F- doped SmFeAsO has been optimized by preparing a series of bulk SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 (Sm1111) using the high gas pressure and high-temperature synthesis (HP-HTS) method, considering various growth parameters like growth pressures (0-1 GPa) and heating time (0.5-2 h). Structural, microstructural, Raman spectroscopic, transport, and magnetic measurements are employed to comprehensively analyze these bulks and derive the conclusive findings. The parent SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 prepared by the conventional synthesis process at ambient pressure (CSP) has a transition temperature (Tc) of around 53-54 K, and the critical current density (Jc) of 103 A/cm2 at 5 K with a small amount of the impurity phases (SmOF and SmAs), consistent with previous reports. Interestingly, all bulks synthesized by HP-HTS have almost the same Tc and Jc as the parent sample. The optimal growth conditions are obtained as 900C, 1 hour, and 0.5 GPa with the sealed Ta-tube, which slightly improved the sample quality and the superconducting properties compared to other bulks grown by HP-HTS. Our study confirms that the existence of the impurity phases in the 1111 family is very robust and cannot be reduced by HP-HTS, leading to only a small variation in the observed superconducting properties of Sm1111 whether prepared by CSP or HP-HTS. Abstract: People exhibit unique emotional responses. In the same scenario, the emotional reactions of two individuals can be either similar or vastly different. For instance, consider one person's reaction to an invitation to smoke versus another person's response to a query about their sleep quality. The identification of these individual traits through the observation of common physical parameters opens the door to a wide range of applications, including psychological analysis, criminology, disease prediction, addiction control, and more. While there has been previous research in the fields of psychometrics, inertial sensors, computer vision, and audio analysis, this paper introduces a novel technique for identifying human traits in real time using brainwave data. To achieve this, we begin with an extensive study of brainwave data collected from 80 participants using a portable EEG headset. We also conduct a statistical analysis of the collected data utilizing box plots. Our analysis uncovers several new insights, leading us to a groundbreaking unified approach for identifying diverse human traits by leveraging machine learning techniques on EEG data. Our analysis demonstrates that this proposed solution achieves high accuracy. Moreover, we explore two deep-learning models to compare the performance of our solution. Consequently, we have developed an integrated, real-time trait identification solution using EEG data, based on the insights from our analysis. To validate our approach, we conducted a rigorous user evaluation with an additional 20 participants. 7. A Novel Pareto-optimal Ranking Method for Comparing Multi-objective Optimization Algorithms

Abstract: As the interest in multi- and many-objective optimization algorithms grows, the performance comparison of these algorithms becomes increasingly important. A large number of performance indicators for multi-objective optimization algorithms have been introduced, each of which evaluates these algorithms based on a certain aspect. Therefore, assessing the quality of multi-objective results using multiple indicators is essential to guarantee that the evaluation considers all quality perspectives. This paper proposes a novel multi-metric comparison method to rank the performance of multi-/ many-objective optimization algorithms based on a set of performance indicators. We utilize the Pareto optimality concept (i.e., non-dominated sorting algorithm) to create the rank levels of algorithms by simultaneously considering multiple performance indicators as criteria/objectives. As a result, four different techniques are proposed to rank algorithms based on their contribution at each Pareto level. This method allows researchers to utilize a set of existing/newly developed performance metrics to adequately assess/rank multi-/many-objective algorithms. The proposed methods are scalable and can accommodate in its comprehensive scheme any newly introduced metric. The method was applied to rank 10 competing algorithms in the 2018 CEC competition solving 15 many-objective test problems. The Pareto-optimal ranking was conducted based on 10 well-known multi-objective performance indicators and the results were compared to the final ranks reported by the competition, which were based on the inverted generational distance (IGD) and hypervolume indicator (HV) measures. The techniques suggested in this paper have broad applications in science and engineering, particularly in areas where multiple metrics are used for comparisons. 8. Enhancing Multi-Class Disease Classification: Neoplasms, Cardiovascular, Nervous System, and Digestive Disorders Using Advanced LLMs

Abstract: In this research, we explored the improvement in terms of multi-class disease classification via pre-trained language models over Medical-Abstracts-TC-Corpus that spans five medical conditions. We excluded non-cancer conditions and examined four specific diseases. We assessed four LLMs, BioBERT, XLNet, and BERT, as well as a novel base model (Last-BERT). BioBERT, which was pre-trained on medical data, demonstrated superior performance in medical text classification (97% accuracy). Surprisingly, XLNet followed closely (96% accuracy), demonstrating its generalizability across domains even though it was not pre-trained on medical data. LastBERT, a custom model based on the lighter version of BERT, also proved competitive with 87.10% accuracy (just under BERT's 89.33%). Our findings confirm the importance of specialized models such as BioBERT and also support impressions around more general solutions like XLNet and well-tuned transformer architectures with fewer parameters (in this case, LastBERT) in medical domain tasks., Comment: 7 Pages, 4 tables and 11 figures. 9. Strengthening Fake News Detection: Leveraging SVM and Sophisticated Text Vectorization Techniques. Defying BERT?

Abstract: The rapid spread of misinformation, particularly through online platforms, underscores the urgent need for reliable detection systems. This study explores the utilization of machine learning and natural language processing, specifically Support Vector Machines (SVM) and BERT, to detect news that are fake. We employ three distinct text vectorization methods for SVM: Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Word2Vec, and Bag of Words (BoW) evaluating their effectiveness in distinguishing between genuine and fake news. Additionally, we compare these methods against the transformer large language model, BERT. Our comprehensive approach includes detailed preprocessing steps, rigorous model implementation, and thorough evaluation to determine the most effective techniques. The results demonstrate that while BERT achieves superior accuracy with 99.98% and an F1-score of 0.9998, the SVM model with a linear kernel and BoW vectorization also performs exceptionally well, achieving 99.81% accuracy and an F1-score of 0.9980. These findings highlight that, despite BERT's superior performance, SVM models with BoW and TF-IDF vectorization methods come remarkably close, offering highly competitive performance with the advantage of lower computational requirements., Comment: 6 pages, 3 tables and 6 Figures. Abstract: Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph of order $n$. A Majority Roman Dominating Function (MRDF) on a graph G is a function $f: V\rightarrow\{-1, +1, 2\}$ if the sum of its function values over at least half the closed neighborhoods is at least one , this is , for at least half of the vertices $v\in V$, $f(N[v])\geq 1$. Moreover, every vertex u with $f(u)=-1$ is adjacent to at least one vertex $w$ with $f(w)=2$. The Majority Roman Domination number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\gamma_{MR}(G)$ , is the minimum value of $\sum_{v\in{V(G)}}f(v)$ over all Majority Roman Dominating Function $f$ of $G$. In this paper we study properties of the Majority Roman Domination in graphs and obtain lower and upper bounds the Majority Roman Domination number of some graphs.

11. Barriers and facilitators of HIV partner status notification in low- and lower-middle-income countries: A mixed-methods systematic review.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The uptake of HIV partner status notification remains limited in low- and lower-middle-income countries. This mixed-methods systematic review aims to summarize the barriers and facilitators of HIV partner status notification in these settings. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science from January 01, 2000, to August 31, 2023, for empirical qualitative and quantitative studies. Two independent reviewers completed the title, abstract, full-text screening, and data extraction. The risk of bias was assessed using a mixed-methods appraisal tool (MMAT), and the study findings were summarized narratively. RESULTS: Out of the 2094 studies identified, 59 relevant studies were included. Common barriers included fear of stigma and discrimination, violence, abandonment, breach of confidentiality and trust, low HIV-risk perception, and limited knowledge of HIV and HIV testing. Facilitators of HIV partner status notification were feelings of love and closeness in marital relationships, feelings of protecting self and partners, and HIV counseling services. CONCLUSION: Efforts to improve HIV partner status notification in low- and lower-middle-income countries should consider barriers and facilitators across all its components, including notification, testing, and linkage to treatment. In addition, HIV partner services must be adapted to the unique needs of key populations.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Glyoxal has been implicated as a significant contributor to the formation of secondary organic aerosols, which play a key role in our ability to estimate the impact of aerosols on climate. Elevated concentrations of glyoxal over remote ocean waters suggests that there is an additional source, distinct from urban and forest environments, which has yet to be identified. Herein, we demonstrate that the ocean can serve as an appreciable source of glyoxal in the atmosphere due to microbiological activity. METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on mass spectrometric analyses of nascent sea spray aerosols and the sea surface microlayer (SSML) of naturally occurring algal blooms, we provide evidence that during the algae death phase phospholipids become enriched in the SSML and undergo autoxidation thereby generating glyoxal as a degradation product. CONCLUSIONS: We propose that the death phase of an algal bloom could serve as an important and currently missing source of glyoxal in the atmosphere.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Glyoxal has been implicated as a significant contributor to the formation of secondary organic aerosols, which play a key role in our ability to estimate the impact of aerosols on climate. Elevated concentrations of glyoxal over open ocean waters suggest that there exists an additional source, different from urban and forest environments, which has yet to be identified. METHODS: Based on mass spectrometric analyses of nascent sea spray aerosols (SSAs) and gas-phase molecules generated during the course of a controlled algal bloom, the work herein suggests that marine microorganisms are capable of excreting toluene in response to environmental stimuli. Additional culture flask experiments demonstrated that pathogenic attack could also serve as a trigger for toluene formation. Using solid-phase microextraction methods, the comparison of samples collected up-channel and over the breaking wave suggests it was transferred across the air-water interface primarily through SSA formation. RESULTS: The presence and then absence of phenylacetic acid in the SSA days prior to the appearance of toluene support previous reports that proposed toluene is produced as a metabolite of phenylalanine through the Shikimate pathway. As a result, once in the atmosphere, toluene is susceptible to oxidation and subsequent degradation into glyoxal. CONCLUSIONS: This work adds to a minimal collection of literature that addresses the primary production of aromatic hydrocarbons from marine microorganisms and provides a potential missing source of glyoxal that should be considered when accounting for its origins in remote ocean regions.

14. When Not to Answer: Evaluating Prompts on GPT Models for Effective Abstention in Unanswerable Math Word Problems

Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly relied upon to solve complex mathematical word problems. However, being susceptible to hallucination, they may generate inaccurate results when presented with unanswerable questions, raising concerns about their potential harm. While GPT models are now widely used and trusted, the exploration of how they can effectively abstain from answering unanswerable math problems and the enhancement of their abstention capabilities has not been rigorously investigated. In this paper, we investigate whether GPTs can appropriately respond to unanswerable math word problems by applying prompts typically used in solvable mathematical scenarios. Our experiments utilize the Unanswerable Word Math Problem (UWMP) dataset, directly leveraging GPT model APIs. Evaluation metrics are introduced, which integrate three key factors: abstention, correctness and confidence. 15. A Method to Generate Multi-interval Pairwise Compatibility Graphs

Abstract: Reconstruction of evolutionary relationships between species is an important topic in the field of computational biology. Pairwise compatibility graphs (PCGs) are used to model such relationships. A graph is a PCG if its edges can be represented by the distance between the leaves of an edge-weighted tree within a fixed interval. If the number of intervals is more than one, then the graph with such a tree representation is called a multi-interval PCG. The aim of this paper is to generate all multi-interval PCGs with a given number of vertices. For this purpose, we propose a method to generate almost all multi-interval PCGs corresponding to a given tree by randomly assigning edge weights and selecting typical intervals. To reduce the exponential tree search space, we theoretically prove that for each multi-interval PCG there exists a tree whose internal vertices have degree exactly three, and developed an algorithm to enumerate such trees. The proposed method is applied to enumerate all two-interval PCGs with up to ten vertices. Our computational results establish that all graphs with up to ten vertices are 2-IPCGs, making significant progress towards the open problem of determining whether a non-2-IPCG exists with fewer than 135 vertices.

16. Large-scale Multi-objective Feature Selection: A Multi-phase Search Space Shrinking Approach

Abstract: Feature selection is a crucial step in machine learning, especially for high-dimensional datasets, where irrelevant and redundant features can degrade model performance and increase computational costs. This paper proposes a novel large-scale multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on the search space shrinking, termed LMSSS, to tackle the challenges of feature selection particularly as a sparse optimization problem. The method includes a shrinking scheme to reduce dimensionality of the search space by eliminating irrelevant features before the main evolutionary process. This is achieved through a ranking-based filtering method that evaluates features based on their correlation with class labels and frequency in an initial, cost-effective evolutionary process. Additionally, a smart crossover scheme based on voting between parent solutions is introduced, giving higher weight to the parent with better classification accuracy. An intelligent mutation process is also designed to target features prematurely excluded from the population, ensuring they are evaluated in combination with other features. These integrated techniques allow the evolutionary process to explore the search space more efficiently and effectively, addressing the sparse and high-dimensional nature of large-scale feature selection problems. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through comprehensive experiments on 15 large-scale datasets, showcasing its potential to identify more accurate feature subsets compared to state-of-the-art large-scale feature selection algorithms. These results highlight LMSSS's capability to improve model performance and computational efficiency, setting a new benchmark in the field.

The HP-HTS process of the parent bulks has enhanced the onset transition temperature (Tconset) by 1.5 K and the critical current density (Jc) by two orders of magnitude compared to the CSP method. Pr-doped FeSe0.5Te0.5 up to 10% doping content prepared, either CSP or HP-HTS, slightly increases the unit cell volume, and high-pressure growth produces an almost pure superconducting phase, which confirms the successful Pr-doping at Fe sites. Raman spectroscopy measurements and DFT calculations suggest the substitution of Pr-atoms in the interlayer spacing of Fe(Se,Te) lattice. High-pressure growth of Fe1-xPrxSe0.5Te0.5 also makes the sample less dense compared to the parent sample grown by HP-HTS. Transport and magnetic measurements depict that Tconset is almost unaffected by Pr doping, whereas Jc of Pr-doped FeSe0.5Te0.5 is enhanced by one order of magnitude relative to the parent sample developed by CSP but lower than that of the parent sample grown by HP-HTS. Hence, Pr doping at Fe sites preserves Tconset and improves Jc of FeSe0.5Te0.5 regardless of the doping contents and growth conditions. These results are promising for the practical application of iron-based superconductors to improve Jc properties without affecting Tconset through CSP process and congruent with discoveries from other superconductors, like cuprates and MgB2., Comment: 50 pages, 1 table, 15 figures

18. Data-driven Diffusion Models for Enhancing Safety in Autonomous Vehicle Traffic Simulations

Abstract: Safety-critical traffic scenarios are integral to the development and validation of autonomous driving systems. These scenarios provide crucial insights into vehicle responses under high-risk conditions rarely encountered in real-world settings. Recent advancements in critical scenario generation have demonstrated the superiority of diffusion-based approaches over traditional generative models in terms of effectiveness and realism. However, current diffusion-based methods fail to adequately address the complexity of driver behavior and traffic density information, both of which significantly influence driver decision-making processes. In this work, we present a novel approach to overcome these limitations by introducing adversarial guidance functions for diffusion models that incorporate behavior complexity and traffic density, thereby enhancing the generation of more effective and realistic safety-critical traffic scenarios. 19. Multimodal Auto Validation For Self-Refinement in Web Agents

Abstract: As our world digitizes, web agents that can automate complex and monotonous tasks are becoming essential in streamlining workflows. This paper introduces an approach to improving web agent performance through multi-modal validation and self-refinement. We present a comprehensive study of different modalities (text, vision) and the effect of hierarchy for the automatic validation of web agents, building upon the state-of-the-art Agent-E web automation framework. We also introduce a self-refinement mechanism for web automation, using the developed auto-validator, that enables web agents to detect and self-correct workflow failures. Our results show significant gains on Agent-E's (a SOTA web agent) prior state-of-art performance, boosting task-completion rates from 76.2\% to 81.24\% on the subset of the WebVoyager benchmark. The approach presented in this paper paves the way for more reliable digital assistants in complex, real-world scenarios.

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

21. ReFine: Boosting Time Series Prediction of Extreme Events by Reweighting and Fine-tuning

Abstract: Extreme events are of great importance since they often represent impactive occurrences. For instance, in terms of climate and weather, extreme events might be major storms, floods, extreme heat or cold waves, and more. However, they are often located at the tail of the data distribution. Consequently, accurately predicting these extreme events is challenging due to their rarity and irregularity. Prior studies have also referred to this as the out-of-distribution (OOD) problem, which occurs when the distribution of the test data is substantially different from that used for training. In this work, we propose two strategies, reweighting and fine-tuning, to tackle the challenge. Reweighting is a strategy used to force machine learning models to focus on extreme events, which is achieved by a weighted loss function that assigns greater penalties to the prediction errors for the extreme samples relative to those on the remainder of the data. Unlike previous intuitive reweighting methods based on simple heuristics of data distribution, we employ meta-learning to dynamically optimize these penalty weights. To further boost the performance on extreme samples, we start from the reweighted models and fine-tune them using only rare extreme samples. Through extensive experiments on multiple data sets, we empirically validate that our meta-learning-based reweighting outperforms existing heuristic ones, and the fine-tuning strategy can further increase the model performance. More importantly, these two strategies are model-agnostic, which can be implemented on any type of neural network for time series forecasting. 22. An optically accelerated extreme learning machine using hot atomic vapors

Abstract: Machine learning is becoming a widely used technique with a impressive growth due to the diversity of problem of societal interest where it can offer practical solutions. This increase of applications and required resources start to become limited by present day hardware technologies. Indeed, novel machine learning subjects such as large language models or high resolution image recognition raise the question of large computing time and energy cost of the required computation. In this context, optical platforms have been designed for several years with the goal of developing more efficient hardware for machine learning. Among different explored platforms, optical free-space propagation offers various advantages: parallelism, low energy cost and computational speed. Here, we present a new design combining the strong and tunable nonlinear properties of a light beam propagating through a hot atomic vapor with an Extreme Learning Machine model. We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the enhancement of the training using such free-space nonlinear propagation on a MNIST image classification task. 23. A Unified Approach to Inferring Chemical Compounds with the Desired Aqueous Solubility

Abstract: Aqueous solubility (AS) is a key physiochemical property that plays a crucial role in drug discovery and material design. We report a novel unified approach to predict and infer chemical compounds with the desired AS based on simple deterministic graph-theoretic descriptors, multiple linear regression (MLR) and mixed integer linear programming (MILP). Selected descriptors based on a forward stepwise procedure enabled the simplest regression model, MLR, to achieve significantly good prediction accuracy compared to the existing approaches, achieving the accuracy in the range [0.7191, 0.9377] for 29 diverse datasets. By simulating these descriptors and learning models as MILPs, we inferred mathematically exact and optimal compounds with the desired AS, prescribed structures, and up to 50 non-hydrogen atoms in a reasonable time range [6, 1204] seconds. These findings indicate a strong correlation between the simple graph-theoretic descriptors and the AS of compounds, potentially leading to a deeper understanding of their AS without relying on widely used complicated chemical descriptors and complex machine learning models that are computationally expensive, and therefore difficult to use for inference. Abstract: Cardiac auscultation, an integral tool in diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), often relies on the subjective interpretation of clinicians, presenting a limitation in consistency and accuracy. Addressing this, we introduce the BUET Multi-disease Heart Sound (BMD-HS) dataset - a comprehensive and meticulously curated collection of heart sound recordings. This dataset, encompassing 864 recordings across five distinct classes of common heart sounds, represents a broad spectrum of valvular heart diseases, with a focus on diagnostically challenging cases. The standout feature of the BMD-HS dataset is its innovative multi-label annotation system, which captures a diverse range of diseases and unique disease states. This system significantly enhances the dataset's utility for developing advanced machine learning models in automated heart sound classification and diagnosis. By bridging the gap between traditional auscultation practices and contemporary data-driven diagnostic methods, the BMD-HS dataset is poised to revolutionize CVD diagnosis and management, providing an invaluable resource for the advancement of cardiac health research. 25. 3D{\pi}: Three-Dimensional Positron Imaging, A Novel Total-Body PET Scanner Using Xenon-Doped Liquid Argon Scintillator

Abstract: Objective: This paper introduces a novel PET imaging methodology called 3-dimensional positron imaging (3D{\pi}), which integrates total-body (TB) coverage, time-of-flight (TOF) technology, ultra-low dose imaging capabilities, and ultra-fast readout electronics inspired by emerging technology from the DarkSide collaboration. Approach: The study evaluates the performance of 3D{\pi} using Monte Carlo simulations based on NEMA NU 2-2018 protocols. The methodology employs a homogenous, monolithic scintillator composed of liquid argon (LAr) doped with xenon (Xe) with silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) operating at cryogenic temperatures. Main results: Significant enhancements in system performance are observed, with the 3D{\pi} system achieving a noise equivalent count rate (NECR) of 3.2 Mcps which is approximately two times higher than uEXPLORER's peak NECR (1.5 Mcps) at 17.3 (kBq/mL). Spatial resolution measurements show an average FWHM of 2.7 mm across both axial positions. The system exhibits superior sensitivity, with values reaching 373 kcps/MBq with a line source at the center of the field of view. Additionally, 3D{\pi} achieves a TOF resolution of 151 ps at 5.3 kBq/mL, highlighting its potential to produce high-quality images with reduced noise levels. Significance: The study underscores the potential of 3D{\pi} in improving PET imaging performance, offering the potential for shorter scan times and reduced radiation exposure for patients. The Xe-doped LAr offers advantages such as fast scintillation, enhanced light yield, and cost-effectiveness. Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

27. BnSentMix: A Diverse Bengali-English Code-Mixed Dataset for Sentiment Analysis

Abstract: The widespread availability of code-mixed data can provide valuable insights into low-resource languages like Bengali, which have limited datasets. Sentiment analysis has been a fundamental text classification task across several languages for code-mixed data. However, there has yet to be a large-scale and diverse sentiment analysis dataset on code-mixed Bengali. We address this limitation by introducing BnSentMix, a sentiment analysis dataset on code-mixed Bengali consisting of 20,000 samples with 4 sentiment labels from Facebook, YouTube, and e-commerce sites. We ensure diversity in data sources to replicate realistic code-mixed scenarios. Additionally, we propose 14 baseline methods including novel transformer encoders further pre-trained on code-mixed Bengali-English, achieving an overall accuracy of 69.8% and an F1 score of 69.1% on sentiment classification tasks. 28. Cycle-Configuration: A Novel Graph-theoretic Descriptor Set for Molecular Inference

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel family of descriptors of chemical graphs, named cycle-configuration (CC), that can be used in the standard "two-layered (2L) model" of mol-infer, a molecular inference framework based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and machine learning (ML). Proposed descriptors capture the notion of ortho/meta/para patterns that appear in aromatic rings, which has been impossible in the framework so far. Computational experiments show that, when the new descriptors are supplied, we can construct prediction functions of similar or better performance for all of the 27 tested chemical properties. We also provide an MILP formulation that asks for a chemical graph with desired properties under the 2L model with CC descriptors (2L+CC model). We show that a chemical graph with up to 50 non-hydrogen vertices can be inferred in a practical time.

Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

30. Development and Effectiveness of the E-Sky Module Based on PBL in the Teaching and Facilitation Process of Early Science

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a growing concern in science education on the enhancement of preschoolers' knowledge and motivation for concepts by implementing efficient teaching methods. This study explored the development and effectiveness of the E-sky Module in increasing the development of preschoolers in Project-based Learning (PBL) activities conducted both within and outside of preschool. This study employed the Design and Development Research (DDR) approach, incorporating many research methods. During the qualitative interviews conducted in the needs analysis phase, three different themes related to the difficulties encountered by teachers when conducting early science projects were meticulously recorded and analysed. Based on a quantitative analysis completed by three experts in the field, this E-sky Module has been determined to have a substantial level of validity and a satisfactory level of reliability. This is evidenced by a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of (p < 0.82) observed. Moreover, throughout the evaluation phase, four distinct themes were effectively reported, suggesting that this module significantly contributed to the comprehensive development of preschoolers. Hence, future studies should explore the potential of enhancing knowledge acquisition through promoting motivation and the emergence of conducive learning environments in the context of PBL.

31. A Scoping Review on STEM Education: The Best Practices Recorded through Previous Studies in Early Childhood Education Setting

Abstract: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is a 21st century learning approach that is extremely important to students and children nowadays. Many developed countries have emphasized this approach to early childhood education (ECE). Although there are some challenges in promoting children's cognitive development in preschool, there are some best practices that early childhood educators can use as a guideline in planning, implementing, and evaluating their development at school. Four databases were used to find the best practices consist of Scopus, ERIC, Web of Science, and Science Direct. These databases are consulted to analyze published articles that produce findings on the best practices and challenges of implementing STEM activities that have been recorded either in kindergarten or preschool environments. The findings revealed there were 23 themes for the best practices and 10 themes for challenges that were successfully analyzed. In order to ensure that STEM education can be implemented with better quality in the future, educators should know the best way to implement the activities by practicing the best practices. In addition, educators also need to take action wisely when there are challenges in implementing STEM activities so that children can acquire meaningful experience when participating in the activities.

Abstract: PurposeMulticentric osteolysis nodulosis and arthropathy (MONA) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia. Caused by mutations in the matrix metalloproteinase 2 gene (MMP2) on chromosome 16q12, this syndrome has infrequently been associated with ophthalmic manifestations. Corneal opacities have been reported but not described or documented in detail.MethodsComplete ophthalmologic examination and multimodal anterior segment imaging were used to characterize the corneal findings in a patient with MONA syndrome.ResultsA 19-year-old with MONA syndrome was referred for an eye exam based upon MONA screening recommendations. Visually insignificant peripheral corneal opacities were noted. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) demonstrated posterior stromal and endothelial hyperreflectivity. Confocal microscopy demonstrated an acellular peripheral endothelium with a normal central endothelium.ConclusionsCorneal opacities can occur with MONA syndrome, which is caused by mutations in the MMP2 gene. In the patient presented here, the corneal opacities are peripheral, deep stromal, with sparing of the anterior stroma and epithelium.

Abstract: Feature selection plays a pivotal role in the data preprocessing and model-building pipeline, significantly enhancing model performance, interpretability, and resource efficiency across diverse domains. In population-based optimization methods, the generation of diverse individuals holds utmost importance for adequately exploring the problem landscape, particularly in highly multi-modal multi-objective optimization problems. Our study reveals that, in line with findings from several prior research papers, commonly employed crossover and mutation operations lack the capability to generate high-quality diverse individuals and tend to become confined to limited areas around various local optima. This paper introduces an augmentation to the diversity of the population in the well-established multi-objective scheme of the genetic algorithm, NSGA-II. This enhancement is achieved through two key components: the genuine initialization method and the substitution of the worst individuals with new randomly generated individuals as a re-initialization approach in each generation. The proposed multi-objective feature selection method undergoes testing on twelve real-world classification problems, with the number of features ranging from 2,400 to nearly 50,000. 34. Improving ICD coding using Chapter based Named Entities and Attentional Models

Abstract: Recent advancements in natural language processing (NLP) have led to automation in various domains. However, clinical NLP often relies on benchmark datasets that may not reflect real-world scenarios accurately. Automatic ICD coding, a vital NLP task, typically uses outdated and imbalanced datasets like MIMIC-III, with existing methods yielding micro-averaged F1 scores between 0.4 and 0.7 due to many false positives. Our research introduces an enhanced approach to ICD coding that improves F1 scores by using chapter-based named entities and attentional models. This method categorizes discharge summaries into ICD-9 Chapters and develops attentional models with chapter-specific data, eliminating the need to consider external data for code identification. For categorization, we use Chapter-IV to de-bias and influence key entities and weights without neural networks, creating accurate thresholds and providing interpretability for human validation. Post-validation, we develop attentional models for three frequent and three non-frequent codes from Chapter-IV using Bidirectional-Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) with Attention and Transformer with Multi-head Attention architectures. Abstract: The diagnosis of bronchiectasis requires measuring abnormal bronchial dilation. It is confirmed using a chest CT scan, where the key feature is an increased broncho-arterial ratio (BAR) (>0.8 in children), often with bronchial wall thickening. Image processing methods facilitate quicker interpretation and detailed evaluations by lobes and segments. Challenges like inclined nature, oblique orientation, and partial volume effect make it difficult to obtain accurate measurements in the upper and middle lobes using the same algorithms. Therefore, accurate detection and measurement of airway and artery regions for BAR and wall thickness in each lobe require different image processing/machine learning methods. We propose methods for: 1. Separating the right lower lobe (RLL) region from full-length CT scans using the tracheal bifurcation (Carina) point as a central marker; 2. Locating the inner diameter of airways and outer diameter of arteries for BAR measurement; and 3. Measuring airway wall thickness (WT) by identifying the outer and inner diameters of airway boundaries. Analysis of 13 HRCT scans with varying thicknesses (0.67mm, 1mm, 2mm) shows the tracheal bifurcation frame can be detected accurately, with a deviation of +/- 2 frames in some cases. A Windows app was developed for measuring inner airway diameter, artery diameter, BAR, and wall thickness, allowing users to draw boundaries around visible BA pairs in the RLL region. Measurements of 10 BA pairs revealed accurate results comparable to those of a human reader, with deviations of +/- 0.10-0.15mm. 36. Moduli stacks of quiver bundles with applications to Higgs bundles

Abstract: We provide a general method for constructing moduli stacks whose points are diagrams of vector bundles over a fixed base, indexed by a fixed simplicial set -- that is, quiver bundles of a fixed shape. We discuss some constraints on the base for these moduli stacks to be algebraic and observe that a large class of interesting schemes satisfy these constraints. Using this construction, we provide an alternate construction of moduli stacks of Higgs bundles along with a proof of algebraicity following readily from the algebraicity of moduli stacks of quiver bundles. One feature of our approach is that, for each of the moduli stacks we discuss, there are algebraic moduli stacks parametrizing morphisms of the objects being classified. We discuss some potential applications of this in categorifying non-abelian Hodge theory in a sense we will make precise. Abstract: Can Visual Question Answering (VQA) systems perform just as well when deployed in the real world? Or are they susceptible to realistic corruption effects e.g. image blur, which can be detrimental in sensitive applications, such as medical VQA? While linguistic or textual robustness has been thoroughly explored in the VQA literature, there has yet to be any significant work on the visual robustness of VQA models. We propose the first large-scale benchmark comprising 213,000 augmented images, challenging the visual robustness of multiple VQA models and assessing the strength of realistic visual corruptions. Additionally, we have designed several robustness evaluation metrics that can be aggregated into a unified metric and tailored to fit a variety of use cases. Our experiments reveal several insights into the relationships between model size, performance, and robustness with the visual corruptions. Our benchmark highlights the need for a balanced approach in model development that considers model performance without compromising the robustness.

Abstract: Far from equilibrium, chemical and biological systems can form complex patterns and waves through reaction-diffusion coupling. Fluid motion often tends to disrupt these self-organized concentration patterns. In this study, we investigate the influence of Marangoni-driven flows in a thin layer of fluid ascending the outer surfaces of hydrophilic obstacles on the spatio-temporal dynamics of chemical waves in the modified Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Our observations reveal that circular waves originate nearly simultaneously at the obstacles and propagate outward. In a covered setup, where evaporation is minimal, the wavefronts maintain their circular shape. However, in an uncovered setup with significant evaporative cooling, the interplay between surface tension-driven Marangoni flows and gravity destabilizes the wavefronts, creating distinctive flower-like patterns around the obstacles. Our experiments further show that the number of petals formed increases linearly with the obstacle's diameter, though a minimum diameter is required for these instabilities to appear. These findings demonstrate the potential to 'engineer' specific wave patterns, offering a method to control and direct reaction dynamics. This capability is especially important for developing microfluidic devices requiring precise control over chemical wave propagation.

40. Leveraging Knowledge Distillation for Lightweight Skin Cancer Classification: Balancing Accuracy and Computational Efficiency

Abstract: Skin cancer is a major concern to public health, accounting for one-third of the reported cancers. If not detected early, the cancer has the potential for severe consequences. Recognizing the critical need for effective skin cancer classification, we address the limitations of existing models, which are often too large to deploy in areas with limited computational resources. In response, we present a knowledge distillation based approach for creating a lightweight yet high-performing classifier. The proposed solution involves fusing three models, namely ResNet152V2, ConvNeXtBase, and ViT Base, to create an effective teacher model. The teacher model is then employed to guide a lightweight student model of size 2.03 MB. This student model is further compressed to 469.77 KB using 16-bit quantization, enabling smooth incorporation into edge devices. With six-stage image preprocessing, data augmentation, and a rigorous ablation study, the model achieves an impressive accuracy of 98.75% on the HAM10000 dataset and 98.94% on the Kaggle dataset in classifying benign and malignant skin cancers. With its high accuracy and compact size, our model appears to be a potential choice for accurate skin cancer classification, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

41. Suitability of KANs for Computer Vision: A preliminary investigation

Abstract: Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) introduce a paradigm of neural modeling that implements learnable functions on the edges of the networks, diverging from the traditional node-centric activations in neural networks. This work assesses the applicability and efficacy of KANs in visual modeling, focusing on fundamental recognition and segmentation tasks. We mainly analyze the performance and efficiency of different network architectures built using KAN concepts along with conventional building blocks of convolutional and linear layers, enabling a comparative analysis with the conventional models. Our findings are aimed at contributing to understanding the potential of KANs in computer vision, highlighting both their strengths and areas for further research. Our evaluation point toward the fact that while KAN-based architectures perform in line with the original claims, it may often be important to employ more complex functions on the network edges to retain the performance advantage of KANs on more complex visual data.

42. Optical signal recording of cellular activity in optogenetic stimulation of human pulp dental cells using a twin-core fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer biosensor

Abstract: This paper introduces an innovative two-core fiber (TCF) optic sensor employing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to monitor the optogenetic response of light-sensitive human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). The in-fiber MZI, formed using a segment of TCF optic, detects refractive index (RI) changes in the surrounding medium. The sensor utilizes the evanescent wave of one core as the sensing arm, necessitating a thin cladding achieved through one-sided chemical etching. This design allows the sensor to detect subtle alterations in the RI of the environment by observing displacements in the interference spectrum. The optogenetic stimulation of light-sensitive cells induces variations in ion concentrations, leading to a corresponding change in refractive index. The fabricated sensor, with a peak sensitivity of 675.74 nm/RIU within the RI range of 1.39-1.43, can detect these changes. A computer simulation validated the sensitivity and optimized fabrication parameters, exhibiting satisfactory agreement with experimental results. Spectrum displacements were recorded for both light-sensitive hDPSCs and regular hDPSCs (as a control test). Results from the experiment, analyzed and compared using data analysis software, revealed that 473 nm blue light effectively stimulated light-sensitive hDPSCs. Notably, the proposed sensor, a novel structure, demonstrated its capability to detect RI changes in the cell medium during optogenetic applications.

Abstract: A set $B\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-total limited packing set in a graph $G$ if $|B\cap N(v)|\leq k$ for any vertex $v\in V(G)$. The $k$-total limited packing number $L_{k,t}(G)$ is the maximum cardinality of a $k$-total limited packing set in $G$. Here, we give some results on the $k$-total limited packing number of graphs emphasizing trees, especially when $k=2$. We also study the $2$-(total) limited packing number of some product graphs. A $k$-limited packing partition ($k$LPP) of graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $k$-limited packing sets.
