Massive stars are often found to be in pairs. This configuration is both a blessing and a curse. From it, we can estimate their exact properties such as their masses but the interactions that result during their life considerably affect the way that the stars evolve. To understand how the stars evolve when they are in pair and what are the effects of these interactions on the stellar properties, we undertook a large study of more than 60 massive binaries at Galactic and LMC metallicities using spectral disentangling, atmosphere modelling and light curve fitting to determine their stellar parameters, and surface abundances. This unique dataset is the largest sample of binaries composed of at least one O-type star to be studied in such a homogeneous way. It allows us to give strong observational constraints to test theoretical binary evolutionary tracks, to probe rotational and tidal mixings and mass transfer episodes., {"references":["Brott, I., et al. 2011, A&A, 530, A115","Grin, N. 3. Importancia de la Botánica para el estudio de las especias o condimentos en la carrera de Ciencias Alimentarias

- Abstract
En la carrera de Ciencias Alimentarias resulta imprescindible estudiar las plantas comestibles por la existencia de la estrecha relación entre diversidad biológica vegetal para la alimentación y la agricultura. En el primer año, se imparte Biología y la unidad temática tres se dedica a las platas comestibles, entre ellas, se estudian las plantas condimenticias. El objetivo del trabajo fue demostrar la importancia de la Botánica para el estudio de las especias o condimentos en la carrera de Ciencias Alimentarias. La información obtenida se extrajo de diferentes bases de datos: Google académico y Scielo, además fueron consultados libros y artículos de revistas, utilizando la técnica de la revisión bibliográfica. La estrategia de búsqueda combinó diferentes palabras clave y los operadores lógicos: especia, condimento o su combinación. A partir del análisis de la bibliografía se compilaron 21 especias en el que se incluye su familia botánica, nombre científico, nombre vulgar, datos generales, la parte empleada en la cocina y sus usos. Se demuestra la importancia de la Botánica para el estudio de las especias o condimentos en la carrera de Ciencias Alimentarias, lo que resulta de gran significación para este licenciado, pues adquiere conocimientos acerca de las plantas que sirven en la alimentación ya que los recursos genéticos de estas, tienen un valor potencial en la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional, lo que contribuye a que estos profesionales puedan incidir de forma positiva en la conservación y protección de la biodiversidad de las mismas. Galaxy cluster counts in bins of mass and redshift have been shown to be a competitive probe to test cosmological models. This method requires an efficient blind detection of clusters from surveys with a well-known selection function and robust mass estimates. The Euclid wide survey will cover 15000 deg$^2$ of the sky in the optical and near-infrared bands, down to magnitude 24 in the $H$-band. The resulting data will make it possible to detect a large number of galaxy clusters spanning a wide-range of masses up to redshift $\sim 2$. This paper presents the final results of the Euclid Cluster Finder Challenge (CFC). The objective of these challenges was to select the cluster detection algorithms that best meet the requirements of the Euclid mission. The final CFC included six independent detection algorithms, based on different techniques, such as photometric redshift tomography, optimal filtering, hierarchical approach, wavelet and friend-of-friends algorithms. These algorithms were blindly applied to a mock galaxy catalog with representative Euclid-like properties. The relative performance of the algorithms was assessed by matching the resulting detections to known clusters in the simulations. Several matching procedures were tested, thus making it possible to estimate the associated systematic effects on completeness to $80$% completeness for a mean purity of 80% down to masses of $10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ and up to redshift $z=2$. Based on these results, two algorithms were selected to be implemented in the Euclid pipeline, the AMICO code, based on matched filtering, and the PZWav code, based on an adaptive wavelet approach. LiLiMaRlin is a library of libraries of massive-star high-resolution optical spectra built by collecting data from [a] our spectroscopic surveys (OWN, IACOB. NoMaDS, and CAF\'E-BEANS) and programs and [b] searches in public archives. The current version has 18 077 spectra of 1665 stars obtained with seven different telescopes (HET 9.2 m, NOT 2.56 m, CAHA 2.2 m, MPG/ESO 2.2 m, OHP 1.93 m, Mercator 1.2 m, and Stella 1.2 m). All the spectra have been filtered to eliminate misidentifications and bad-quality ones, uniformly reprocessed, and placed on a common format. We present applications of this library of libraries to the analysis of spectroscopic binaries (OWN and MONOS, see poster by E. Trigueros P\'aez at this meeting) and the study of the interstellar medium (CollDIBs). En el marco de implementar estas pol?ticas p?blicas, se ha considerado; dentro del estudio de mercado; la generaci?n de emprendimientos Socio Productivos de talleres automotrices en el ?rea circundante al polo de desarrollo econ?mico que representar?a el nuevo Centro de Revisi?n T?cnica Vehicular de la ciudad de Esmeraldas y la obligatoriedad que tiene el GAD Municipal del Cant?n Esmeraldas de asumir las competencias de Revisi?n T?cnica Vehicular. En el desarrollo de la investigaci?n, se determin? la importancia que reviste en la actualidad la inclusi?n social y su vinculaci?n directa en el desarrollo de las sociedades, lo cual debe considerarse como el fin superior de la visi?n estrat?gica de las instituciones p?blicas. La viabilidad financiera y social del proyecto; fundamentada en el estudio financiero; permite definir un rumbo a seguir en el futuro, para todos los involucrados y as? hacer realidad la implementaci?n de la gesti?n emprendimientos de talleres automotrices como aporte del gobierno local y la participaci?n de la comunidad, con la finalidad de conseguir que se d? inicio al desarrollo econ?mico de la ciudad de Esmeraldas.

Differences in the behaviour of matter and antimatter have been observed in $K$ and $B$ meson decays, but not yet in any baryon decay. Such differences are associated with the non-invariance of fundamental interactions under the combined charge-conjugation and parity transformations, known as $C\!P$ violation. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, a search is made for $C\!P$-violating asymmetries in the decay angle distributions of $\Lambda^0_b$ baryons decaying to $p\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$ and $p\pi^-K^+K^-$ final states. These four-body hadronic decays are a promising place to search for sources of $C\!P$ violation both within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. We find evidence for $C\!P$ violation in $\Lambda^0_b$ to $p\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$ decays with a statistical significance corresponding to 3.3 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. Massive OB stars are critical to the ecology of galaxies, and yet our knowledge of OB stars in the Milky Way, fainter than $V \sim 12$, remains patchy. Data from the VST Photometric H$��$ Survey (VPHAS+) permit the construction of the first deep catalogues of blue excess-selected OB stars, without neglecting the stellar field. A total of 14900 candidates with 2MASS cross-matches are blue-selected from a 42 square-degree region in the Galactic Plane, capturing the Carina Arm over the Galactic longitude range $282^{\circ} \lesssim \ell \lesssim 293^{\circ}$. Spectral energy distribution fitting is performed on these candidates' combined VPHAS+ $u,g,r,i$ and 2MASS $J,H,K$ magnitudes. This delivers: effective temperature constraints, statistically separating O from early-B stars; high-quality extinction parameters, $A_0$ and $R_V$ (random errors typically $< 0.1$). The high-confidence O-B2 candidates number 5915 and a further 5170 fit to later B spectral type. Spectroscopy of 276 of the former confirms 97% of them. The fraction of emission line stars among all candidate B stars is 7--8% . Greyer ($R_V > 3.5$) extinction laws are ubiquitous in the region, over the distance range 2.5--3 kpc to $\sim$10~kpc. Near prominent massive clusters, $R_V$ tends to rise, with particularly large and chaotic excursions to $R_V \sim 5$ seen in the Carina Nebula. The data reveal a hitherto unnoticed association of 108 O-B2 stars around the O5If$+$ star LSS 2063 ($\ell = 289.77^{\circ}$, $b = -1.22^{\circ}$). Treating the OB star scale-height as a constant within the thin disk, we find an orderly mean relation between extinction ($A_0$) and distance in the Galactic longitude range, $287.6^{\circ} < \ell < 293.5^{\circ}$, and infer the subtle onset of thin-disk warping. A halo around NGC 3603, roughly a degree in diameter, of $\sim$500 O-B2 stars with $4 < A_0 (\rm{mag}) < 7$ is noted., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 26 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables, 1 appendix

We report high spatial resolution i' band imaging of the multiple T Tauri system LkH$��$ 262/LkH$��$ 263 obtained during the first commissioning period of the Adaptive Optics Lucky Imager (AOLI) at the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope, using its Lucky Imaging mode. AOLI images have provided photometry for each of the two components LkH$��$ 263 A and B (0.41 arcsec separation) and marginal evidence for an unresolved binary or a disc in LkH$��$ 262. The AOLI data combined with previously available and newly obtained optical and infrared imaging show that the three components of LkH$��$ 263 are co-moving, that there is orbital motion in the AB pair, and, remarkably, that LkH$��$ 262-263 is a common proper motion system with less than 1 mas/yr relative motion. We argue that this is a likely five-component gravitationally bounded system. According to BT-settl models the mass of each of the five components is close to 0.4 M$_{\odot}$ and the age is in the range 1-2 Myr. The presence of discs in some of the components offers an interesting opportunity to investigate the formation and evolution of discs in the early stages of multiple very low-mass systems. The number of magnetic stars detected among massive stars is small; nevertheless, the role played by the magnetic field in stellar evolution cannot be disregarded. Links between line profile variability, enhancements/depletions of surface chemical abundances, and magnetic fields have been identified for low-mass B-stars, but for the O-type domain this is almost unexplored. Based on FORS2 and HARPS spectropolarimetric data, we present the first detection of a magnetic field in HD54879, a single slowly rotating O9.7 V star. Using two independent and different techniques we obtained the firm detection of a surface average longitudinal magnetic field with a maximum amplitude of about 600 G, in modulus. A quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the star with the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND results in an effective temperature and a surface gravity of 33000$\pm1000$ K and 4.0$\pm0.1$ dex. The abundances of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, and magnesium are found to be slightly lower than solar, but compatible within the errors. We investigate line-profile variability in HD54879 by complementing our spectra with spectroscopic data from other recent OB-star surveys. The photospheric lines remain constant in shape between 2009 and 2014, although H$\alpha$ shows a variable emission. The H$\alpha$ emission is too strong for a standard O9.7 V and is probably linked to the magnetic field and the presence of circumstellar material. Its normal chemical composition and the absence of photospheric line profile variations make HD54879 the most strongly magnetic, non-variable single O-star detected to date., Comment: 16 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution license.-- et al., A search for particles with the same mass and couplings as those of the standard model Higgs boson but different spin and parity quantum numbers is presented. We test two specific alternative Higgs boson hypotheses: a pseudoscalar Higgs boson with spin-parity JP=0- and a gravitonlike Higgs boson with JP=2+, assuming for both a mass of 125GeV/c2. We search for these exotic states produced in association with a vector boson and decaying into a bottom-antibottom quark pair. The vector boson is reconstructed through its decay into an electron or muon pair, or an electron or muon and a neutrino, or it is inferred from an imbalance in total transverse momentum. We use expected kinematic differences between events containing exotic Higgs bosons and those containing standard model Higgs bosons. The data were collected by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, operating at a center-of-mass energy of s=1.96TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.45fb-1. CAF��-BEANS is an on-going survey running on the 2.2 m telescope at Calar Alto. For more than two years, CAF��-BEANS has been collecting high-resolution spectra of early-type stars with the aim of detecting and characterising spectroscopic binaries. The main goal of this project is a thorough characterisation of multiplicity in high-mass stars by detecting all spectroscopic and visual binaries in a large sample of Galactic O-type stars, and solving their orbits. Our final objective is eliminating all biases in the high-mass-star IMF created by undetected binaries., 6 pages. The 30 Doradus (30\,Dor) region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (also known as the Tarantula Nebula) is the nearest massive starburst region, containing the richest sample of massive stars in the Local Group. It is the best possible laboratory to investigate aspects of the formation and evolution of massive stars. Here, we focus on rotation which is a key parameter in the evolution of these objects. We establish the projected rotational velocity, $v_{e}\sin i$, distribution of an unprecedented sample of 216 radial velocity constant ($\rm{\Delta RV\, \leq\, 20 \,km s^{-1}}$) O-type stars in 30\,Dor observed in the framework of the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS). The distribution of $v_{e}\sin i$ shows a two-component structure: a peak around 80 $\rm{km s^{-1}}$ and a high-velocity tail extending up to $\sim$600 $\rm{km s^{-1}}$. Around 75% of the sample has 0 $\leq\, v_{e}\sin i \leq$ 200 $\rm{km s^{-1}}$ with the other 25% distributed in the high-velocity tail. The presence of the low-velocity peak is consistent with that found in other studies of late-O and early-B stars. The high-velocity tail is compatible with expectations from binary interaction synthesis models and may be predominantly populated by post-binary interaction, spun-up, objects and mergers. This may have important implications for the nature of progenitors of long-duration gamma ray bursts., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. The IACOB spectroscopic survey of Galactic OB stars is an ambitious observational project aimed at compiling a large, homogeneous, high-resolution database of optical spectra of massive stars observable from the Northern hemisphere. The quantitative spectroscopic analysis of this database, complemented by the invaluable information provided by Gaia (mainly regarding photometry and distances), will represent a major step forward in our knowledge of the fundamental physical characteristics of Galactic massive stars. In addition, results from this analysis will be of interest for other scientific questions to be investigated using Gaia observations. Here we discuss and present results for two of them, GOSSS and NoMaDS. We also discuss recent and future developments on the Galactic O-Star Catalog and announce the upcoming availability of Marxist Ghost Buster, an IDL code that attacks spectral classification (hence the name) by using an interactive comparison with spectral libraries., 7 pages, to appear in the proceedings of the conference in honor of Tony Moffat that took place at Lac Taureau in July 2011

We report on the detection of a third massive star component in the �� Orionis AB system, traditionally considered as a binary system. The system has been monitored by the IACOB spectroscopic survey of Northern Massive stars program, obtaining 23 high-resolution FIES@NOT spectra with a time-span of ~2.5 years. The analysis of the radial velocity curves of the two spectroscopic components observed in the spectra has allowed us obtain the orbital parameters of the system, resulting in a high eccentric orbit (e~0.78) with an orbital period of 143.5 +/- 0.5 d. This result implies the actual presence of three stars in the �� Orionis AB system when combined with previous results obtained from the study of the astrometric orbit (with an estimated period of ~157 yr)., 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. We have implemented a new numerical method to obtain the low-energy many-particle states of the Coulomb glass. First, this method creates an initial set of low-energy states by a hybrid of local search and simulated annealing approaches. Then, systematically investigating the surroundings of the states found, this set is completed. The transition rates between these states are calculated. The connectivity of the corresponding graph is analyzed in dependence on temperature and duration of measurement. We study how the formation of clusters is reflected in the specific heat as non-ergodic effects.

The Internet of Things will bring a scenario in which interaction between humans and devices will be critical to allow people to use, monitor or configure Internet of Things devices. Interactions in such applications are based on traditional graphical interfaces. Devices that accept interaction based on Natural Language, e.g., through voice commands, can understand basic human orders or answering questions whenever user expressions fit into a known language pattern. Some devices can understand natural language voice commands but require sophisticated voice assistants located in the cloud, which raises significant privacy concerns. Others devices which handle voice-processing locally can perform a very limited local recognition system, requiring users to be familiar with words the system can process. The purpose of this work is to diminish the complexity of Natural Language processing in the context of IoT. The solution posited in this article allows Internet of Things devices to offload Natural Language processing to a system that improves the use of Natural Language and alleviates the need to learn or remember specific words or terms intended for triggering device actions. We have evaluated the feasibility of the design with a proof-of-concept implemented in a home environment and it was tested by real users. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Internet of Things (IoT) applications are expected to generate a huge unforeseen amount of traffic flowing from Consumer Electronics devices to the network. In order to overcome existing interoperability problems, several standardization bodies have joined to bring a new generation of Machine to Machine (M2M) networks as a result of the evolution of wireless sensor/actor networks and mobile cellular networks to converged networks. M2M is expected to enable IoT paradigms and related concepts into a reality at a reasonable cost. As part of the convergence, several technologies preventing new IoT services to interfere with existing Internet services are flourishing. Responsive, message-driven, resilient and elastic architectures are becoming essential parts of the system. These architectures will control the entire data flow for an IoT system requiring sometimes to store, shape and forward data among nodes of a M2M network to improve network performance. However, IoT generated data have an important personal component since it is generated in personal devices or are the result of the observation of the physical world, so rises significant security concerns. This article proposes a novel opportunistic flexible secure store and forward proxy for M2M networks and its mapping to asynchronous protocols that guarantees data confidentiality. Aims.We aim to provide the atmospheric parameters and rotational velocities for a large sample of O- and early B-type stars, analysed in a homogeneous and consistent manner, for use in constraining theoretical models.Methods.Atmospheric parameters, stellar masses, and rotational velocities have been estimated for approximately 250 early B-type stars in the Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds from high-resolution VLT-FLAMES data using the non-LTE TLUSTY model atmosphere code. This data set has been supplemented with our previous analyses of some 50 O-type stars (Mokiem et?al. 2006, 2007) and 100 narrow-lined early B-type stars (Hunter et?al. 2006; Trundle et?al. 2007) from the same survey, providing a sample of ~400 early-type objects.Results.Comparison of the rotational velocities with evolutionary tracks suggests that the end of core hydrogen burning occurs later than currently predicted and we argue for an extension of the evolutionary tracks. We also show that the large number of the luminous blue supergiants observed in the fields are unlikely to have directly evolved from main-sequence massive O-type stars as neither their low rotational velocities nor their position on the H-R diagram are predicted. We suggest that blue loops or mass-transfer binary systems may populate the blue supergiant regime. By comparing the rotational velocity distributions of the Magellanic Cloud stars to a similar Galactic sample, we find that (at 3? confidence level) massive stars (above 8?M?) in the SMC rotate faster than those in the solar neighbourhood. However there appears to be no significant difference between the rotational velocity distributions in the Galaxy and the LMC. We find that the v sini distributions in the SMC and LMC can modelled with an intrinsic rotational velocity distribution that is a Gaussian peaking at 175?km?s-1(SMC) and 100?km?s-1(LMC) with a [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] half width of 150?km?s-1. We find that in NGC?346 in the SMC, the 10?25?M?main-sequence stars appear to rotate faster than their higher mass counterparts. It is not expected that O-type stars spin down significantly through angular momentum loss via stellar winds at SMC metallicity, hence this could be a reflection of mass dependent birth spin rates. Recently Yoon et?al. (2006) have determined rates of GRBs by modelling rapidly rotating massive star progenitors. Our measured rotational velocity distribution for the 10?25?M?stars is peaked at slightly higher velocities than they assume, supporting the idea that GRBs could come from rapid rotators with initial masses as low as 14?M?at low metallicities.

ABSTRACTAn assay that uses heminested PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis for the detection and genotyping of Giardia duodenalison the basis of polymorphism in the triose phosphate isomerase (tpi) gene was developed. This assay was evaluated with DNA extracted from purified parasite material, bacterial cultures, whole human feces containing G. duodenalisand other parasites, and their corresponding immunofluorescence-stained fecal smears on glass microscope slides. The assay was specific and discriminated between G. duodenalisassemblages A and B. RFLP analysis further distinguished two groups (designated groups I and II) within assemblage A. Among 35 DNA samples extracted from whole feces from patients with confirmed sporadic giardiasis, the tpigene was amplified from 33 (94%). Of these, nine (27%) samples contained assemblage A group II, 21 (64%) contained assemblage B, and 3 (9%) contained a mixture of assemblage A group II and assemblage B. The tpigene of G. duodenalisassemblage B was amplified from 21 of 24 (88%) DNA samples extracted from whole feces from patients with confirmed cases of infection in a nursery outbreak. No amplification was detected from the remaining three DNA samples. Overall, analysis of DNA extracted from material recovered from stained microscope slides identified identical G. duodenalisgenotypes in 35 (65%) of the 54 samples for which a genotype was established with DNA from whole feces. The heminested PCR method developed is sensitive, simple, and rapid to perform and is applicable for the analysis of other intestinal pathogens.

ABSTRACTCryptosporidiumpresent in 1,705 fecal samples from humans and 105 from livestock animals were analyzed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism of the Cryptosporidiumoocyst wall protein. Overall, genotype 1 (human exclusive type) was detected in 37.8% of the samples from humans, genotype 2 (broad host range) was detected in 61.5%, a third genotype designated genotype 3 (Cryptosporidium meleagridis) was detected in 0.3%, and both genotypes 1 and 2 were recovered from 0.4%. All samples from livestock yielded genotype 2. Among 469 patients infected during eight drinking water-related outbreaks, five outbreaks were predominantly due to genotype 1, and three were due to genotype 2. Fifty-four samples were collected from patients involved with five swimming pool-associated outbreaks: two outbreaks were due to genotype 1, one was due to genotype 2, and the remaining two involved both genotypes 1 and 2. Among 26 family outbreaks and 1 children's nursery outbreak (2 to 3 members per group), the same genotype was recovered from the different members of each outbreak: 13 were due to genotype 1, and 14 were due to genotype 2. In eighteen patients reporting contact with animals and/or farms, genotype 1 was recovered from one patient and genotype 2 was recovered from the remaining 17. Among the sporadic cases, there were distinct geographical and temporal variations in the distribution of the genotypes. The spring peak in cases was due to genotype 2. Genotype 1 was significantly more common in patients infected during the late-summer–autumn peak and in those with a history of foreign travel.
