Cardamom (cardamum) is a spice produced from the seeds of several Elettaria and Amomum plants of the Zingiberaceae family. Cardamom has been demonstrated to offer numerous benefits, including its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and other metabolic (anti-diabetic) properties, and its potential to reduce cancer risk. Recently, researchers have extracted and tested multiple phytochemicals from cardamom to assess their potential effectiveness against various types of human malignancy. These studies have indicated that cardamom can help overcome drug resistance to standard chemotherapy and protect against chemotherapy-induced toxicity due to its scavenging properties. Furthermore, chemical compounds in cardamom, including limonene, cymene, pinene, linalool, borneol, cardamonin, indole-3-carbinol, and diindolylmethane, primarily target the programmed cell death lignin-1 gene, which is more prevalent in cancer cells than in healthy cells. This review provides the medicinal properties and pharmacological uses of cardamom, its cellular effects, and potential therapeutic uses in cancer prevention and treatment, as well as its use in reducing drug resistance and improving the overall health of cancer patients. Based on previous preclinical studies, cardamom shows significant potential as an anti-cancer agent, but further exploration for clinical use is warranted due to its diverse mechanisms of action.

INTRODUCTION: Rasayanas are Ayurvedic natural products that have adaptogenic effects. The extensive research on rasayanas in oncology is not currently well summarized. The aim of this review is to investigate the range and nature of the current body of research, identify gaps in knowledge, and to summarize the existing literature as it relates to Ayurvedic rasayanas and oncology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of fifteen Ayurvedic adaptogen rasayanas was conducted using three main concepts: Ayurvedic herbal terms, neoplasm terms, and oncological pathways. After screening was performed, key variables were extracted (tagged) including type of adaptogen, cancer type, type of study design, constituent type, and mechanisms of action (MOA). The results were synthesized and summarized using descriptive statistics and narrative summaries. RESULTS: Five hundred and eighty-four articles were reviewed and tagged. The two most tagged adaptogens were Glycyrrhiza glabra (Yashthimadhu/licorice) (n = 166 (28.4 %)) and Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) (n = 151 (25.9 %)). The most frequently tagged cancer diagnostic categories were gastrointestinal (n = 175 (30 %)), and breast (n = 126 (21 %)). Most of the articles focused on in vitro studies (n = 470 (80.3 %)). Of the 12 MOA tags, the most frequently tagged was apoptosis (n = 298 (29.2 %)). CONCLUSION: A large body of pre-clinical literature exists on adaptogen rasayanas in oncology, indicating this field of research is still in its early phase. Comparatively few studies focused on the effects on the immune system. Given the growing interest in immuno-oncology therapeutics and the potential impact of adaptogen rasayanas on the immune system, future research may focus more in this area, along with work that is more directly linked to future clinical studies.

Asparagus racemosus (AR), an Ayurvedic botanical, possesses various biological characteristics, yet its impact on HIV-1 replication remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of AR root extracts and its principal bioactive molecule, Shatavarin IV (Shatavarin), on HIV-1 replication and their role in mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction during HIV-1 infection, utilizing both in vitro and in silico methodologies. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was evaluated using MTT and ATPlite assays. In vitro anti-HIV-1 activity was assessed in TZM-bl cells against X4 and R5 subtypes, and confirmed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells using HIV-1 p24 antigen capture ELISA and viral copy number assessment. Mechanistic insights were obtained through enzymatic assays targeting HIV-1 Integrase, Protease and Reverse Transcriptase. Shatavarin's activity was also validated via viral copy number and p24 antigen capture assays, along with molecular interaction studies against key HIV-1 replication enzymes. HIV-1 induced mitochondrial dysfunction was evaluated by detecting mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium accumulation, mitochondrial potential, and caspase activity within the infected cells. Non-cytotoxic concentrations of both aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts derived from Asparagus racemosus roots displayed dose-dependent inhibition of HIV-1 replication. Notably, the hydroalcoholic extract exhibited superior Reverse Transcriptase activity, complemented by moderate activity observed in the Protease assay. Molecular interaction studies revealed that Shatavarin IV, the key bioactive constituent of AR, formed hydrogen bonds within the active binding pocket site residues crucial for HIV replication enzyme catalysis, suggesting its potential in attenuating HIV-1 infection. Mitochondrial dysfunction induced by HIV-1 infection, marked by increased oxidative stress, mitochondrial calcium overload, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, and elevated caspase activity, was effectively mitigated by treatment with AR extracts and Shatavarin IV. These findings underscore the potential of AR extracts and Shatavarin IV as antiviral agents, while enhancing mitochondrial function during HIV-1 infection. In conclusion, Asparagus racemosus extracts, particularly Shatavarin IV, demonstrate promising inhibitory effects against HIV-1 replication while concurrently ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction induced by the virus. Several rural Moroccan people depend on natural remedies such as Smen (ghee) before visiting a health center due to their low cost and accessibility. However, knowledge of Smen traditional medicine is not documented but rather transferred orally from generation to generation. This is the first qualitative ethnomedicinal study that provides and documents information about the medicinal use of Smen in Northern Morocco. The present study aimed to investigate and gather information on the traditional medicinal practices of using Smen among rural people in Northern Morocco for a document and suggest the exploration of this product and its bioactive compounds in medical applications. The investigation was carried out by conducting individual semistructured interviews with 630 elderly people from March to April 2022. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and expressed as a percentage of responses to each question in the survey. The study revealed that 66.5% of the people surveyed were aware of the medical benefits of Smen, which had been passed down from their ancestors. It has been used to treat hemorrhoids, common colds, detoxification, rheumatism, and wound/burn injuries. This study showed that Moroccan's ethnomedicinal knowledge is closely related to Ayurveda, ancient Indian traditional medicine. For centuries, Smen has been used traditionally for medical purposes, just as it has been used in cooking. Natural products contain numerous structures and biological activities, offering ample options for discovering new antiviral drugs with unique targets and mechanisms. Andrographis paniculata has been utilized in Indian Ayurvedic, Swedish, Traditional Thai, and Chinese medicine to alleviate coughs, colds, and influenza symptoms. Early-stage laboratory studies indicate that this herbal extract may reduce inflammation and fever, and boost the body's natural defenses against viruses, potentially leading to symptom relief. This review aims to systematically present clinical trial data about antiviral herbal formulations derived from Andrographis paniculata , delineating the antiviral effects of both natural and synthetic derivatives, along with in silico analyses. Breast Cancer (BC) is the most common cause of cancer-associated deaths in females worldwide. Despite advancements in BC treatment driven by extensive characterization of its molecular hallmarks, challenges such as drug resistance, tumor relapse, and metastasis persist. Therefore, there is an urgent need for alternative treatment approaches with multi-modal efficacy to overcome these hurdles. In this context, natural bioactives are increasingly recognized for their pivotal role as anti-cancer compounds. This study focuses on predicting molecular targets for key herbal phytoconstituents—gallic acid, piperine, quercetin, resveratrol, and beta-sitosterol—present in the polyherbal formulation, Krishnadi Churna. Using an in-silico network pharmacology model, key genes were identified and docked against these marker compounds and controls. Mammary carcinoma emerged as the most significant phenotype of the putative targets. Analysis of an online database revealed that out of 135 predicted targets, 134 were mutated in breast cancer patients. Notably, ESR1, CYP19A1, and EGFR were identified as key genes which are known to regulate the BC progression. Docking studies demonstrated that the herbal phytoconstituents had similar or better docking scores than positive controls for these key genes, with convincing protein-ligand interactions confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations, MM/GBSA and free energy landscape (FEL) analysis. Overall, this study highlights the predictive potential of herbal phytoconstituents in targeting BC genes, suggesting their promise as a basis for developing new therapeutic formulations for BC. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a unique perspective on Arbuda, correlating them with the condition known as tumours. According to Ayurveda, Arbuda arise due to the vitiation of the three doshas: Vata (the dosha responsible for movement and cognition), Pitta (the dosha responsible for regulating body temperature and metabolic activities), and Kapha (the dosha responsible for regulating body fluids and maintaining the cohesion of body constituents). This vitiation disrupts the Dhatu Pariposhana, which refers to the body's metabolic and nutritional balance. The concept of Arbuda, as detailed in classical Ayurvedic texts, describes as progressively enlarging, globular masses that are fixed to deeper structures, usually non suppurative, and occasionally painful. They can occur in any part of the body, involving the Mamsa (muscle) and Rakta (blood) Dhatus due to the disturbance of the tridosha. Factors such as Mithya Ahara (improper diet) and Vihara (lifestyle) contribute to the vitiation of doshas and the subsequent formation of Arbuda. The ancient texts also classify Arbuda into various types, though there is limited evidence linking Ayurveda's understanding to modern medical concepts of non tumour-forming cancers. However, descriptions of other diseases in Ayurvedic literature bear resemblance to cancer, suggesting that ancient physicians may have recognised the link between shotha (chronic inflammation) and malignant tumours. This review presents the existing literature on Arbuda, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of tumours from an Ayurvedic perspective and to offer integrative approaches for their management and eradication. Garcinia indica, also referred to as kokum, is a plant that belongs to the Clusiaceae family, indigenous to the Gujarat, Western Ghats and the northeastern area of India. Each component of the plant possesses distinct benefits and uses. Kokum is commonly consumed as 'sharbat' within the India's Western Ghats region. It serves as sustenance, therapeutic agents, and nutraceuticals. It has been utilized in Ayurvedic and Siddha treatment since antiquity. It plays potential role as antiglycation, anticancer, antihistaminic, antiulcerogenic, cardioprotective, antibacterial, antiviral, antidepressant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory and so on. These findings indicate that G. indica possesses the potential to function as a beneficial therapeutic agent for various ailments, corroborated by prior publications on the pharmacological effects of its isolated constituents. Background: Bala is an important Ayurvedic drug used for the treatment of many diseases. Sida cordifolia (L.), Malvaceae family, is the genuine source drug of Bala as per Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India. The other species of Sida like Sida acuta, Sida rhombifolia, Sida alnifolia and Sida cordata are also used as adulterants or substitutes of Bala. The objective of the present study is to identify a scientifically validated substitute for Bala (Sida cordifolia) by detailed phytochemical evaluation of its allied species. Results: Preliminary analysis showed that all the selected species contain similar class of compounds like alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, etc. Quantitative estimation of major class of compounds such as total alkaloids, total phenolics and total flavonoids was done by spectrophotometric methods. Polyphenolic contents of selected species are almost comparable. In the case of alkaloids, variations have been observed among the species. Chemical profiles of selected species were compared by HPTLC and HPLC analysis. Major chemical constituents are found to be common for the selected species. HPLC profiles also showed similarity in their peak pattern. Conclusion: Based on the phytochemical studies, the species like S. alnifolia, S. acuta and S. rhombifolia contain almost similar types of phytochemicals. However, the chemical constituents of Sida cordata are found to be different from other allied species. Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine system, offers Kadha tea as a potential herbal option. This review explores Kadha’s components (basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum J. Presl), ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), and raisin(Vitis vinifera L.)) and their interaction with various neurological disorders. Studies suggest Kadha exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties, potentially impacting Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson’s disease, neurotoxicity, neuroinflammation, and brain trauma. Human anatomy is the science that deals with the structure of the human body. The term anatomy is derived from the Greek word “anatome”, meaning cutting up. Study of anatomy both theoretically and practically to fully understand the body. Dissection is the base of practical knowledge of human anatomy for medical students and before the dissection; there is a need for preservation of the dead body. Acharya Sushruta was the first physician and surgeon who dissected a human dead body in the ancient era. The “Jalnimajjan Padhhati” of Mritsanrakshan, a hydrobiological method of preserving dead bodies, was imparted by Acharya Sushruta, the father of surgery, in Ayurveda around 1500 years before B.C. Acharya Sushruta has used natural materials which are found anywhere easily and described the detailed structure of the human body from external to internal, seven types of skin (Twacha and Kala) etc. In the modern era, dead body preservation is done with the prepared solution of various chemicals. This process is called embalming. Acharya Charaka mentioned that knowledge of Sukshm and Sthul Sharir is very necessary for the Sharir Rachana. Acharya Sushruta is the foremost authority on the anatomical structures of the human body. Teliya-kanda is among one of the miraculous plants which has been described in ancient Ayurvedic text for veritable medicinal uses. However, the taxonomic identification of Teliya-kanda plant is yet ambiguous. Following a semi-structured survey methodology, we carried out questionnaire based interviews with 250 native tribals and traditional healers/ vaidyas of villages in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand (22 remote villages). The participants involve in the study were consulted about their knowledge towards the target plant species Teliya-kanda, its medicinal applications, features, drug formulations, drug administration route, dosage etc. The survey was conglomerated with ancient texts of Ayurveda (published/ unpublished), thereby possibly revealing the most accurate botanical source of Teliya-kanda. The ethnobotanical information was evaluated by various quantitative metrics as use value (UV), use frequency (FU), informant consensus factor (FIC), citation relative frequency (RFC), popularity relative level (RPL), and rank priority (RP). In the present study, data collected from the survey participants included the information of about 09 taxa belonging to 05 botanical families. The interviewed informants alluded that the highest level of fidelity, popularity, and priority was found for Sauromatum venosum (Dryand. ex Aiton) Kunth (RPL ~ 0.417; RFC ~ 0.232; RP ~ 0.0969), thereby indicating it to be the most probable botanical source of Teliya-kanda. Based on this ethnobotanical survey, the name Teliya-kanda can be associated with S. venosum (Dryand. ex Aiton) Kunth, however, further detailed molecular and phytochemical analyses yet need to be unveiled. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that leads to persistent symmetrical polyarthritis accompanied by systemic manifestations. It may lead to an array of deformities and even complications like rheumatoid nodules, carpal tunnel syndrome, adhesive capsulitis, cardiovascular diseases, and many more. This case report intends to discuss the ayurvedic management of Rheumatoid Arthritis which was complicated by Adhesive Capsulitis. A 73-year-old male patient was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. He had previously undergone allopathic treatment for a year. In June 2023, the patient sought ayurvedic treatment for his ailment and later acquired signs and symptoms of Adhesive Capsulitis. He was given ayurvedic oral medications along with external therapeutic procedures. There was a significant reduction in the values of the Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3 (RAPID3) score, Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI), Rheumatoid Factor (Quantitative), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and improvement in the range of movement of the affected joint. A pre‐clinical toxicological evaluation of herbal medicines is necessary to identify any underlying health‐associated side effects, if any. BPGrit is an Ayurveda‐based medicine prescribed for treating hypertensive conditions. High‐performance liquid chromatography‐based analysis revealed the presence of gallic acid, ellagic acid, coumarin, cinnamic acid, guggulsterone E, and guggulsterone Z in BPGrit. For sub‐acute toxicity analysis of BPGrit, male and female Sprague–Dawley rats were given repeated oral gavage at 100, 300, and 1000 mg/kg body weight/day dosages for 28 days, followed by a 14‐day recovery phase. No incidences of mortality, morbidity, or abnormal clinical signs were observed in BPGrit‐treated rats throughout the study period. Also, the body weight and food consumption habits of the experimental animals did not change during the study duration. Hematological, biochemical, and histopathological analysis did not indicate any abnormal changes occurring in the BPGrit‐treated rats up to the highest tested dose of 1000 mg/kg body weight/day. Finally, the study established the "no‐observed‐adverse‐effect level" for BPGrit at >1000 mg/kg body weight/day in Sprague–Dawley rats. BPGrit, an Ayurvedic polyherbal medicine prescribed to hypertensive patients, was evaluated for sub‐acute toxicity Sprague–Dawley rats over a period of 28 days, with a 14‐day recovery phase. Presence of several beneficial phytochemicals was observed in BPGrit using high‐performance liquid chromatography analysis. Repeated oral gavage of BPGrit in male and female animals did not induce mortality, morbidity, or abnormal clinical, biochemical, hematological, or histological signs. Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, fever, and cough are common respiratory complaints seen in bronchial asthma. It is the most prevalent chronic health issue affecting individuals in the paediatric age group. Tamaka Shwasa is one among the five varieties of Shwasa Roga in Ayurveda. The purpose of present case study was to examine how an Ayurvedic treatment plan might be applied to cases of bronchial asthma. Hereby, the authors present a case report of a 10-year-old female child who was brought to the clinic by her parents, presenting with complaints of difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, and occasional sneezing. Based on the history taken and clinical examination, she was diagnosed as a case of Tamaka Shwasa, having suffered from it since, the age of five. The child was treated according to the treatment protocol cited in classic text books of Ayurveda that is Virechana and other medications, for a period of two months, divided into two sittings. After two months, there was a notable decline in clinical features, such as cough, breathlessness, and cold, as reported by her mother. Additionally, there was a decrease in the eosinophil count. The present case study demonstrates the role of Ayurveda in the management of bronchial asthma.

Background: Lumbar radiculopathy refers to the compression of a nerve root as it exits the lumbosacral column. The word "radiculopathy" describes symptoms that develop when the lumbosacral nerve roots are compressed. This comprises varying degrees of radiating pain, numbness or tingling, weakness, and irregular gait. The patient was treated with Panchakarma procedures and Ayurvedic oral medications, resulting in satisfactory outcomes with no reported side effects. Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Panchakarma and Ayurvedic oral medications in treating lumbar radiculopathy. Methodology: A single case study of a 21-year-old male suffering from pain in the lumbar region radiating to the right leg, restricted movement, and difficulty walking and standing for nine months. He was treated with Panchakarma, including local massage, Katibasti, Matravasti, Niruha Vasti, and Patrapottali Sweda, followed by oral medications. Treatment was continued for 14 days. Background: The rising global trend of traditional medicine and complementary and alternative medicine use necessitates a structured approach to ensure patient safety and efficacy. Due to its unique theoretical framework, directly applying modern pharmacovigilance principles to Ayurveda may be insufficient. Purpose: This study aims to highlight the need for a collaborative approach that integrates traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern safety and efficacy evaluation methods. It critiques the limitations of current pharmacovigilance practices, especially in the context of Ayurveda, and proposes improvements to better capture the complexities of traditional medicine. Methodology: An analysis of the "AyushSuraksha" program, a key initiative for the pharmacovigilance of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and homoeopathy (ASU&H) medicines in India, was conducted. The program's focus areas, including monitoring medications, specific materials, and procedure-based therapies, were reviewed in light of their efficacy and safety reporting mechanisms. Additionally, the applicability of current pharmacovigilance methodologies, particularly in the context of personalized Ayurveda treatments, was evaluated through case studies and literature reviews. Results: The "AyushSuraksha" program, while focused on medication and therapy monitoring, overlooks the safety of food items used in Ayurveda. Current pharmacovigilance systems, designed for standardized medications, may be inadequate for Ayurveda, as demonstrated by positive outcomes in autism treatment despite the presence of microbiologically harmful products. Furthermore, existing pharmacovigilance proformas lack a distinction between physicians' and end-users perspectives, limiting the reporting scope. Conclusion: A transition to a holistic, evidence-based pharmacovigilance approach that incorporates Ayurvedic assessments and nonlinear herbal interactions is crucial. Separate proformas for physicians and end-users, along with disease-specific questions, are recommended to improve reporting accuracy. Exploitation of the kithul palm (Caryota urens L. Arecaceae) is an ancient industry in Sri Lanka, yet it is neither commercialized nor cultivated. Naturally established palms in the agroforestry systems or in the wild are used to produce food, beverage, timber, and traditional medicines. As kithul cultivation is not commercialized, the related production systems are not mechanized, products are not standardized, or value added. Each step related to kithul products has specific sets of methods learnt through experience, disseminated from one generation to the next. Diverse kithul products are used in diets, in industry and some of its products are integrated with Ayurvedic medicine. The scientific research findings corroborate some beneficial properties of kithul products such as floral sap, treacle, jaggery, toddy, vinegar and flour, claimed by ayurvedic physicians. Kithul products have many potential uses in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, bioremediation, energy production, and structural engineering. This review compiles the indigenous knowledge system behind the kithul industry in Sri Lanka and the scientific findings justifying the practices in the industry and properties of the products. We highlight the need to scientifically explore certain components in the industry such as the seasoning mixtures used for tapping the sap to develop more effective commercial products, develop innovative tapping and processing technology, and improved cultivars and establishment of plantations. Abstract Background Asthma is a heterogeneous, inflammatory disease with several phenotypes and endotypes. Severe asthmatics often exhibit mixed granulocytosis with reduced corticosteroid sensitivity. Bronchom is a newly developed Ayurvedic prescription medicine, indicated for the treatment of obstructive airway disorders. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the in-vivo efficacy of Bronchom in mouse model of mixed granulocytic asthma with steroidal recalcitrance. Methods High-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) were employed to identify and quantitate the phytometabolites present in Bronchom. The preclinical effectiveness of Bronchom was assessed in house dust mite (HDM) and Complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced mixed granulocytic asthma model in mice. High dose of dexamethasone was tested parallelly. Specific-pathogen-free C57BL/6 mice were immunized with HDM and CFA and nineteen days later, they were intranasally challenged with HDM for four consecutive days. Then the mice were challenged with nebulized methacholine to evaluate airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). Inflammatory cell influx was enumerated in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) followed by lung histology. Additionally, the concentrations of Th2 and pro-inflammatory cytokines was assessed in the BALF by multiplexed immune assay. The mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) was also evaluated in the lung. Results HPTLC fingerprinting and UHPLC quantification of Bronchom revealed the presence of bioactive phytometabolites, namely, rosmarinic acid, gallic acid, methyl gallate, piperine, eugenol and glycyrrhizin. Bronchom effectively reduced AHR driven by HDM-CFA and the influx of total leukocytes, eosinophils and neutrophils in the BALF. In addition, Bronchom inhibited the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the lung as well as goblet cell metaplasia. Further, it also suppressed the elevated levels of Th2 cytokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the BALF. Similarly, Bronchom also regulated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as MUC5AC in mice lungs. Reduced effectiveness of a high dose of the steroid, dexamethasone was observed in the model. Conclusions We have demonstrated for the first time the robust pharmacological effects of an herbo-mineral medicine in an animal model of mixed granulocytic asthma induced by HDM and CFA. The outcomes suggest the potential utility of Bronchom in severe asthmatics with a mixed granulocytic phenotype.

Main body of the abstract The integration of Ayurveda with modern medicine seeks to utilize the best of both systems, focusing on using natural remedies and treatments that have been used for centuries in Ayurveda. The integration involves combining the strengths of both systems, including the use of Ayurvedic principles in modern medicine and the incorporation of modern medicine into Ayurvedic practices. Several studies have explored the efficacy of Ayurvedic treatments for various diseases, and the integration of Ayurvedic principles into modern medicine can provide a more comprehensive approach to patient care. Short conclusion Ayurveda is a traditional medical system deeply rooted in Indian culture that offers a holistic approach to healthcare. Its principles emphasize personalized treatment based on an individual's constitution. Urdhwajatrugata Vyadhi (disease of the supra clavicular region) and Indralupta {Alopecia Areata (AA)} are characterised by patchy hair loss in the area that bears hair, such as the beard and scalp. According to Sushruta Acharya, vitiated pitta and vitiated vata together cause Indralupta (AA), leading to scalp hair loss. Additionally, vitiated Rakta and Kapha obstruct the hair follicles openings, limiting the growth of new hair. In contemporary science, these conditions are related to the clinical features of AA. A five-year-old female child presented to the Department of Kaumarbhritya with complaints of hair falling out in patches on the scalp gradually over six months. In her condition, the Raktamokshana therapy by using the jalaukavcharan vidhi technique was adopted for effective results. This age-old procedure described by Acharya Sushrut in Sushrut Samhita is still beneficial in treating the above aforementioned condition. The patient experienced relief from her symptoms after eight sessions and is continuing treatment. Raktamokshana, or therapeutic bloodletting, is one of the Ayurvedic therapy methods for Raktapradoshaja Vikara. Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) through leech treatment is one of the easiest methods to administer, especially for elderly patients, female patients, paediatric patients, individuals who are extremely shy, and those with sensitive constitutions like children. It resulted in fewer complications postprocedure and reduced the risk of symptom recurrence. The therapy was cost-effective, and within short span of three months, it produced positive outcomes in patients.

Abstract Introduction Low back and neck pain are common musculoskeletal disorders with multiple treatment options. India’s traditional medical systems, known as Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy) offer range of interventions and are widely used. In view of limited documentation of adverse events following Ayush interventions for lumbar and cervical spondylosis, we synthesized evidence and estimated proportion of studies reporting adverse events. Methods We systematically searched all published documents from biomedical and multidisciplinary abstract and citation databases and Ayush-specific repositories from their inception to April 2021. We selected studies as per inclusion criteria and extracted information, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. We systematically reviewed the qualitative evidence form the selected studies. Results Majority (94%) of the selected 113 studies were interventional studies and included 77 (68.1%) journal articles and 35 (31%) academic dissertations. Among the Ayush systems, considerable proportion was from Ayurveda (32.7%), followed by Siddha (24.8%), Yoga (22.1%), Unani (15.9%) and Homoeopathy (4.4%). Almost three-fourths of the studies were on lumbar spondylosis (65%; n = 74), followed by cervical spondylosis (31%; n = 35), and the remaining four included both. Thirteen percent of the 113 studies described adverse events [Yoga = 9.7%; Unani = 1.8% and Homoeopathy = 1.8%]. More adverse events were reported among the studies on lumbar (9.7%) than cervical spondylosis (2.7%). The nature of interventions were non-pharmacological (10.6%; n = 12), pharmacological (n = 2; 1.8%) or combined (n = 1; 0.9%). Conclusions Only one in eight studies reported any adverse event following Ayush interventions for cervical and lumbar spondylosis. Abstract Background The RP-HPLC method has been established to simultaneous estimation of seven markers in polyherbal formulation JKC using the C18 (25 × 0.46 cm, i.d,5 µm) column. The mobile phase consisted of methanol: water (80:20) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and observed retention time at 2 to 11 min with sharp points. The marker compounds viz. Andrographolide (AG), Piperine (PP), Picroside-I (P-I), Picroside-II (P-II), α-Cyprone (AC), 6-Shogaol (6S), and 6-Gingerol (6G) were quantified in JKC formulations by HPLC method. Detection was performed at the wavelength (λ) of 229 nm for AG, 343 nm for PP, 279 nm for P-I, 264 nm for P-II, 254 nm for AC, and 280 nm for both 6S and 6G by HPLC–PDA detector. Abstract Background Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine ailment, whose current standard of care is hormonal replacement therapy with levothyroxine (LT4). There is a medical need for alternative and safer therapies as LT4 is associated with special treatment considerations and adverse effects. Thyrogrit (THY) is a polyherbal formulation indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism. The present study, describes the characterization of the phytocompounds present in THY and its in-vivo efficacy in rat model of hypothyroidism, in combination with a sub-optimal dose of LT4. Methods Ultra High Performance Liquid chromatography was employed for the identification of the phytocompounds present in THY. For the evaluation of its in-vivo efficacy, female Wistar rats were administered THY orally, 15-days prior to disease induction, and continued throughout the experiment. Subsequently, hypothyroidism was induced by oral administration of propylthiouracil (PTU). From day 45 onwards, animals were administered orally with a sub-optimal dose of LT4 (2 μg/kg) till the end of the study. On day 79, animals were euthanized, blood was collected for measurement of thyroid hormones and other clinical chemistry parameters. Weights of liver, kidney and thyroid were recorded. Finally, the thyroid was subjected to histopathological evaluation through hematoxylin and eosin (H&E staining), immunohistochemistry as well as immunofluorescence. Results The principal phyto-components detected in THY by Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography included gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, corilagin, ellagic acid, piperine, guggulsterone E and Z, which are documented to exerted beneficial effects on thyroid function. In the in-vivo study, THY when supplemented with a low dose of levothyroxine restored the PTU-induced reduction in the serum levels of T3 and T4 and improved PTU-induced renal impairment. THY treatment ameliorated the hallmark histopathological changes associated with hypothyroidism and C-cell hyperplasia. Further, co-administration of THY and LT4 did not show any major non-clinical safety concerns even after the administration for more than twelve weeks. Conclusion This study has demonstrated that co-administration of THY and LT4 improves the PTU-evoked alterations in the thyroid ultrastructure and function, abrogates hypothyroidism-associated renal impairment and exhibits an acceptable basic safety profile. Honey's carbohydrate components include a variety of mono- and disaccharide forms such as fructose, glucose, sucrose and other reducing sugars. Proline, lysine, phenylalanine, β-alanine, arginine, serine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid are the main amino acids that are present in honey. Immense nutritional benefits make honey a high demanding item in food and in medical. It is a multivitamin tonic enriched with the antimicrobial, antioxidant, cough preventing, hepato-protective, wound healing and immune modulating properties. Being a high demand item, most of the honeys available in market are adulterated by several means. Eventually, human practices developed a number of ways for detection of adulteration in honey. Even modern instrumentation like NMR is becoming a powerful and reliable tool in detection of high-rising adulteration. The present article aims to highlight a thorough of review of medicinal applications of honey with special emphasis on the traditional practices along with an overview of the history, composition, physical and nutritional properties and testing of adulteration.

Depression is a significant mental health issue that will impact most people’s lives in one way or another. It can diminish someone’s quality of life and have a negative impact on their ability to work and maintain relationships. The worst case scenario for severe depression is suicide. There still exists a societal stigma around depression due to its prevalence, suffering, dysfunction, morbidity, and financial burden. Currently, 80% of individuals with depression are not receiving any treatment. Historical ayurvedic literature sporadically mentions depression as both an illness (manasika vyadhi) and an emotional state. The purpose of the study was to assess the comprehensive Ayurvedic management strategy for depressive disorder. Here the authors discusses a case that involves a 23-year-old male patient presenting with chief complaints of poor concentration, weight loss, and social withdrawal. He was treated using ayurvedic principles such as Sarvang Snehan, Baspa Sweda, Shirodhara, and Shamana Chikitsa. After 15 days, the patient’s symptoms were re-assessed, resulting in a satisfactory outcome and an overall improvement in his life. The combination of snehan, swedana, shirodhara, and Shaman chikitsa significantly facilitated the management of depression.

The obscure disease pattern of COVID -19 have to be evaluated with Ayurvedic interventions and the present clinical trial was a randomized open label parallel three-arm control trial on the major and minor symptomatic patients with the recent pandemic. The patients were recruited from the Super specialty building of Sir Sunderlal hospital, COVID-19 ward and home isolated ones. The Ayurvedic intervention includes the 15 days oral administration (Group A) -Gojihvadi Kwath, Sanjeevani Vati; Panchagavya Ghrit Granules; Shunthi (Dry ginger powder) plus conventional treatment, in (Group B) - Shirishadi Kwath, Sanjeevani Vati; Panchagavya Ghrit Granules; Shunthi (Dry ginger powder) plus conventional treatment and in Group C (control group) only the conventional medicines. Assessment was done based on the RT-PCR reports, signs and symptoms. The results point out the efficacy of trial medicine (that is group A and B) to discharge the patients earlier than those from the control group. The early reduction in the signs and symptoms noted were also observed. Group B showed a faster recovery from dry cough and shortness of breath and improvement in appetite. Home-isolation patients showed faster recovery of clinical symptoms than the hospitalized patients. Ayurvedic interventions can accelerate viral load clearance associated with quicker recovery and concurrently decrease the risk of viral dissemination. Detection was performed at the wavelength (λ) of 229 nm for AG, 343 nm for PP, 279 nm for P-I, 264 nm for P-II, 254 nm for AC, and 280 nm for both 6S and 6G by HPLC–PDA detector. Results: The marker compounds in JKC formulations were observed in different retention times (Rt) i.e. AG at 3.060 ± 0.01 min, PP at 5.460 ± 0.03 min, P-I at 2.789 ± 0.02 min, P-II at 2.553 ± 0.03 min, AC at 10.951 ± 0.02 min, 6S at 6.302 ± 0.03 min, and 6G at 4.111 ± 0.02 min respectively. The proposed method was validated with acceptable linearity (r2 0.9995–0.9999), precision, robustness, ruggedness, and accuracy (RSD < 2%) under optimum conditions. The limit of detection and quantification of bioactive markers were as: AG (1.386; 4.200 ppm), PP (2.033; 6.161 ppm), P-I (2.822; 8.553 ppm), P-II (2.538; 7.691 ppm), AC (0.269; 0.815 ppm), 6G (0.158; 0.480 ppm), 6S (0.188; 0.569 ppm). The amount (mg/g) of bioactive markers detected and estimated in plants and formulation were as: AG (41.282 ± 0.48; 10.06 ± 0.18), PP (53.81 ± 0.25, 13.82 ± 0.37 in PN, PL; 4.27 ± 0.07), P-I (15.97 ± 0.01; 0.48 ± 0.003), P-II (63.24 ± 0.35; 2.31 ± 0.006), AC (0.42 ± 0.01; 0.36 ± 0.006), 6G (0.71 ± 0.03; 0.16 ± 0.001), and 6S (2.64 ± 0.09; 0.12 ± 0.004) respectively. Method was found to be rugged and robust. The results found for all the validation parameters were within the limits according to ICH guidelines. Conclusion: The proposed method is fast, precise, economic, and specific and used for the simultaneously quantifiable analysis of seven major bioactive markers in the ingredients (herbs) and the JKC formulations. Introduction: Low back and neck pain are common musculoskeletal disorders with multiple treatment options. India's traditional medical systems, known as Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy) offer range of interventions and are widely used. In view of limited documentation of adverse events following Ayush interventions for lumbar and cervical spondylosis, we synthesized evidence and estimated proportion of studies reporting adverse events. Methods: We systematically searched all published documents from biomedical and multidisciplinary abstract and citation databases and Ayush-specific repositories from their inception to April 2021. We selected studies as per inclusion criteria and extracted information, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. We systematically reviewed the qualitative evidence form the selected studies. Results: Majority (94%) of the selected 113 studies were interventional studies and included 77 (68.1%) journal articles and 35 (31%) academic dissertations. Among the Ayush systems, considerable proportion was from Ayurveda (32.7%), followed by Siddha (24.8%), Yoga (22.1%), Unani (15.9%) and Homoeopathy (4.4%). Almost three-fourths of the studies were on lumbar spondylosis (65%; n = 74), followed by cervical spondylosis (31%; n = 35), and the remaining four included both. Thirteen percent of the 113 studies described adverse events [Yoga = 9.7%; Unani = 1.8% and Homoeopathy = 1.8%]. More adverse events were reported among the studies on lumbar (9.7%) than cervical spondylosis (2.7%). The nature of interventions were non-pharmacological (10.6%; n = 12), pharmacological (n = 2; 1.8%) or combined (n = 1; 0.9%). Conclusions: Only one in eight studies reported any adverse event following Ayush interventions for cervical and lumbar spondylosis. The organic anion transporters OAT1 (SLC22A6) and OAT3 (SLC22A8) are drug transporters that are expressed in the kidney, with well-established roles in the in vivo transport of drugs and endogenous metabolites. A comparatively unexplored potential function of these drug transporters is their contribution to the in vivo regulation of natural products (NPs) and their effects on endogenous metabolism. This is important for the evaluation of potential NP interactions with other compounds at the transporter site. Here, we have analyzed the NPs present in several well-established databases from Asian (Chinese, Indian Ayurvedic) and other traditions. Loss of OAT1 and OAT3 in murine knockouts caused serum alterations of many NPs, including flavonoids, vitamins, and indoles. OAT1- and OAT3-dependent NPs were largely separable based on a multivariate analysis of chemical properties. Direct binding to the transporter was confirmed using in vitro transport assays and protein binding assays. Our in vivo and in vitro results, considered in the context of previous data, demonstrate that OAT1 and OAT3 play a pivotal role in the handling of non-synthetic small molecule natural products, NP-derived antioxidants, phytochemicals, and nutrients (e.g., pantothenic acid, thiamine). As described by remote sensing and signaling theory, drug transporters help regulate redox states by meditating the movement of endogenous antioxidants and nutrients between organs and organisms. The Food and Drug Administration has mandated that all pharmaceutical products should have an expiration date (or shelf life), mentioned directly on the container label since 1979. The notion of shelf life was introduced to Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani medications in the year 2005. In view of this, a number of research works have been published regarding the shelf life assessment of varied Ayurvedic formulations and their modified dosage forms. However, lots of variations have been observed in the estimated shelf life of the same dosage form in the different studies undertaken. Owing to this, the presented article aims to compile and critically appraise both published and unpublished literature on shelf life, considering both classical and scientific concepts. An extensive search was performed in various online databases, websites as well as search engines including Google Scholar, PubMed, ScopeMed, Dhara Online, etc., to screen the available published literature. The search criterion was using the words shelf life, Saveeryata avadhi, stability study, real-time stability study, and expiry date in relation to the Ayurvedic formulations. On reviewing the accessible literature, it was found that only 49 researches are there that reported the shelf life of Ayurvedic formulations, corresponding with the norms laid down in the recent version of the 2016 gazette notification while a majority of the studies do not comply. The calculated shelf life was found less in 54.68 % and more in 35.93 % and exact equal in only 4.68 % formulations in comparison to the prescribed values. Upon reviewing the available literature, the authors believe that determining shelf life for Ayurvedic formulations is a challenging task. Limiting shelf life to certain duration in absence of a range may be misleading. Although this current attempt is a preliminary one, more in-depth research is needed to determine the changes in stability periods and the underlying rationale for these changes due to different attributes. Moreover, there is a lack of indistinct specifications for the shelf life of many dosage forms. Background: Rudraksha has excellent mineral characteristics, making it a smart medication and smart nutrition. In Ayurveda, the highly prized plant is believed to have sprung from Lord Shiva's tears, offering tremendous therapeutic and astrological advantages for human existence. Methodology: To conduct a thorough evaluation of the literature, databases from Springer, Elsevier, PubMed, and Science Direct were used. Result and Discussion : In addition to its scientific use, Rudraksha has unique characteristics that make it possible to heal a wide range of incurable ailments. It also serves a significant spiritual function in a man's everyday life. Biochemical analysis, electromagnetic analysis, and chemical composition can provide all the necessary chemical information about rudraksha. Accurate information about its scientific properties reveals that Rudraksha is a highly potent plant that will greatly benefit our medical research. Additionally, traditional mythological and astrological values describe the various types of Rudraksha; generally, each type has 1-14 faces (Mukhi), each with a unique value. Conclusion: Contemporary medicine has utilized the rich pharmacological and therapeutic properties of rudraksha, such as its analgesic, antioxidant, antifungal, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, immunomodulator and antidepressant properties. This publication presents the first Ukrainian translation of the fourteenth chapter of the first section of the fundamental Sanskrit treatise on Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine) Charaka Samhita. (For previous chapters, see 2017 issues of The World of the Orient and No. 2 for this year.) As it exists today, this text is thought to have arisen in the 1st century CE. The translation is of great importance for acquaintance of the Ukrainian readers with medical conceptions and life of Ancient India. The fourteenth chapter is devoted to such an Ayurvedic procedure as fomentation (svedana, from Sanskrit sveda or sweat), which means various types of therapeutic warming: warming the whole body or its individual parts; dry heat, steam heat, hot tub; warming up with or without preliminary anointing а patient's body with oil. At the beginning of the chapter, the usefulness of fomentation is justified by an analogy "Even dry poles bend by means of oleation and fomentation, then how living human beings [can not be benefited]?" The chapter insists on coordinating a power of fomentation with a season and a patient's condition. Indications and contraindications for fomentation are listed. The development of a nation hinges upon the health and well-being of its populace. However, tribal communities, often marginalized and neglected, face numerous challenges due to their reluctance to engage with other communities for essential services. Understanding the health status of these communities is paramount. This study aims to evaluate the health status, nutrition, and dietary practices among the tribes of Heggadadevanakote (HD Kote), located in the Mysore district of Karnataka, India, focusing on the anemic population. This study was a baseline analysis of the project titled "Evaluation of efficacy and tolerability of select Ayurveda formulations in moderate Iron Deficiency Anemia", conducted as a part of the Tribal Health Care Research Programme (THCRP) under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Minsitry of AYUSH. The trial was conducted as an outreach activity to address the health needs of the tribal population of HD Kote village, Karnataka. A survey was conducted among 370 participants aged 18 to 55 years, comprising 77 males and 293 females. Clinical screening for anemia and associated symptoms was performed following the World Health Organization classification. Statistical analysis using MS Excel was employed to determine the prevalence of various health issues within the tribal population. The findings reveal a significant prevalence of physiological complications among the tribal population, particularly among women, where the majority are affected by anemia, indicating an urgent need to address their health status. To address these challenges and raise awareness, the Ministry of Ayush, along with health professionals, has identified causative factors and implemented various frontline demonstrations, schemes, and promotive and therapeutic activities using Ayurveda to enhance the overall well-being of the tribal community. This study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the health needs of tribal populations, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions to improve their health status and quality of life. The quality of services in tourism is one of the aspects of the industry that has drawn considerable academic attention. The empirical study on the service quality and satisfaction of the wellness tourism sector is underexplored. The present study empirically examined the expectations and perceptions of service quality in wellness centres, assessed the level of satisfaction of tourists, and identified the factors influencing service quality and satisfaction. The study has been conducted among selected Ayurvedic resorts in Palakkad, Kerala. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires to tourists who had used wellness treatments. The research outcome shows a discrepancy between wellness tourists' expectations and perceptions of service quality. There is a negative gap in the service quality of wellness centres; the perception level of wellness centres is lower than expected. Recommendations to reduce the gap have been discussed. Bridging the negative gap in this aspect can significantly boost guest flow and contribute to the overall growth of Kerala's tourism industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine ailment, whose current standard of care is hormonal replacement therapy with levothyroxine (LT4). There is a medical need for alternative and safer therapies as LT4 is associated with special treatment considerations and adverse effects. Thyrogrit (THY) is a polyherbal formulation indicated for the treatment of hypothyroidism. The present study, describes the characterization of the phytocompounds present in THY and its in-vivo efficacy in rat model of hypothyroidism, in combination with a sub-optimal dose of LT4. Methods: Ultra High Performance Liquid chromatography was employed for the identification of the phytocompounds present in THY. For the evaluation of its in-vivo efficacy, female Wistar rats were administered THY orally, 15-days prior to disease induction, and continued throughout the experiment. Subsequently, hypothyroidism was induced by oral administration of propylthiouracil (PTU). From day 45 onwards, animals were administered orally with a sub-optimal dose of LT4 (2 μg/kg) till the end of the study. On day 79, animals were euthanized, blood was collected for measurement of thyroid hormones and other clinical chemistry parameters. Weights of liver, kidney and thyroid were recorded. Finally, the thyroid was subjected to histopathological evaluation through hematoxylin and eosin (H&E staining), immunohistochemistry as well as immunofluorescence. Results: The principal phyto-components detected in THY by Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography included gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, corilagin, ellagic acid, piperine, guggulsterone E and Z, which are documented to exerted beneficial effects on thyroid function. In the in-vivo study, THY when supplemented with a low dose of levothyroxine restored the PTU-induced reduction in the serum levels of T3 and T4 and improved PTU-induced renal impairment. THY treatment ameliorated the hallmark histopathological changes associated with hypothyroidism and C-cell hyperplasia. Further, co-administration of THY and LT4 did not show any major non-clinical safety concerns even after the administration for more than twelve weeks. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that co-administration of THY and LT4 improves the PTU-evoked alterations in the thyroid ultrastructure and function, abrogates hypothyroidism-associated renal impairment and exhibits an acceptable basic safety profile. Honey got its significance, both as medical and non-medical purposes. Honey is a complex matrix of several carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and many more. Honey's carbohydrate components include a variety of mono- and disaccharide forms such as fructose, glucose, sucrose and other reducing sugars. Proline, lysine, phenylalanine, β-alanine, arginine, serine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid are the main amino acids that are present in honey. Immense nutritional benefits make honey a high demanding item in food and in medical. It is a multivitamin tonic enriched with the antimicrobial, antioxidant, cough preventing, hepato-protective, wound healing and immune modulating properties. Being a high demand item, most of the honeys available in market are adulterated by several means. Eventually, human practices developed a number of ways for detection of adulteration in honey. Even modern instrumentation like NMR is becoming a powerful and reliable tool in detection of high-rising adulteration. The present article aims to highlight a thorough of review of medicinal applications of honey with special emphasis on the traditional practices along with an overview of the history, composition, physical and nutritional properties and testing of adulteration. Medical anthropologists have not paid enough attention to the variation at the level of the individual practitioners of biomedicine, and anthropological critiques of biomedical psychiatry as it is practiced in settings outside the Global North have tended to depict psychiatrists in monolithic terms. In this article, we attempt to demonstrate that, at least in the case of India, some psychiatrists perceive limitations in the biomedical model and the cultural assumptions behind biomedical practices and ideologies. This paper focuses on three practitioners who supplement their own practices with local and alternative healing modalities derived from South Asian psychologies, philosophies, systems of medicine and religious and ritual practices. The diverging psychiatric practices in this paper represent a rough continuum. They range from a bold and confident psychiatrist who uses various techniques including ritual healing to another who yearns to incorporate more Indian philosophy and psychology in psychiatric practice and encourages students of ayurvedic medicine to more fully embrace the science they are learning to a less proactive psychiatrist who does not describe a desire to change his practice but who is respectful and accepting of ayurvedic treatments that some patients also undergo. Rather than simply applying a hegemonic biomedical psychiatry, these psychiatrists offer the possibility of a more locally-attuned, context sensitive psychiatric practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
