3. Phenological stages analysis in peach trees using electronic nose

Abstract

Thinning is an expensive and time-consuming management practice used in peach orchards to improve resource distribution among plants and improve production quality. Determining the right time and intensity for thinning is challenging and involves expertise. Furthermore, it generally consumes many hours of work, which makes, in some cases, unfeasible to analyze an entire orchard. For this reason, information that can assist in making making decisions about thinning can improve the cost–benefit ratio of the technique. To mitigate these problems, an electronic nose system, the e-nose, that explores the relationship between the smell of peach trees outdoors and the different growth phases was developed. Twenty-two composed volatile samples were collected from around peach trees (open environment) during its reproductive period (around 39 days) and five supervised machine learning classification algorithms (k-nearest neighbors (KNN), multilayer perceptron (MLP), random forest (RF), logistic regression (LR), and support vector machine (SMV)) were used to analyze the data, to evaluate the possibility of estimating phenological stages from odor environment. The result showed that all models achieved a balanced accuracy greater than 97.5%. As a secondary contribution, the importance of sensors was also analyzed for this application, and a combination of three sensors achieved a classification rate of 100% with the KNN classifier. The e-nose system was successful in distinguishing between petal drop, initial fruit formation, advanced fruit formation, and formed fruit. These results demonstrate the potential of using an electronic nose in a remote system to assist in decision-making in orchard practices as thinning.

Abstract

In this work, the impact of different substrate-gate voltage bias conditions (below and above the device threshold voltage) on current-voltage characteristics and sensitivity of a silicon nanowire field-effect transistor (SiNW-FET) biosensor was investigated. A 3-dimensional device structure with n-type SiNW channel and a substrate gate electrode was designed and electrically simulated In the Silvaco ATLAS. Next, the SiNW channel was covered with a range of interface charge density to mimic the charged target biomolecule captured by the device. The outcome was translated into a drain current versus interface charge semi-log graph and the device sensitivity was calculated using the linear regression curve's slope of the plotted data. The device's electrical characteristic shown higher generation of output drain current values with the increase of negative substrate-gate voltage bias due to the hole carriers' accumulation that forms a conduction channel in the SiNW. Application of higher negative interface charge density increased the change in drain current, with the device biased with higher substrate-gate voltage shows more significant change in drain current. The device sensitivity increased when biased with higher substrate-gate voltage with highest sensitivity is 75.12 nA/dec at substrate-gate voltage bias of -1.00 V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nanofluids have many applications in industries as well as engineering such as biomedicine, manufacturing, and electronics. Nanofluid is used for improvement of thermal and mass transmission. Based on the aforementioned applications, in the present study, a two-dimensional Maxwell nanofluid with thermal radiation effect on the existence of motile microorganisms over a vertically stretchable surface is explored. The consequence of heat absorption, the efficiency of heat flux in a porous medium, viscous dissipations, and Joule heating impacts are considered. The Brownian and thermophoretic diffusion effects have been evaluated. In addition, the binary chemical reaction is taken into account to evaluate the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) mixed convection flow. Graphene nanoparticles are suspended in so-called engine oil (base fluid). The proposed liquid model depends on the governing nonlinear equations of velocity, temperature, the concentration of nanoparticles, and motile gyrotactic microorganisms. In order to transform highly nonlinear partial differential equations into nonlinear ordinary differential equations, an appropriate similarity transformation is exploited. For the solution of the present study, the homotopy analysis method-technique in Mathematica-12 is used. The fluctuation of velocity, temperature, concentration, and gyrotactic microorganisms’ characteristics for numerous flow parameters is discussed in detail. Some important fallouts of the existing study are that the Maxwell liquid parameter, Eckert number, and magnetic parameter lessen the nanoliquid velocity. But the fluid temperature becomes higher for growing estimates of the Brownian motion and thermophoretic factors. The radiation and chemical reaction parameters have declining impacts on the solutal profile. The motile microorganism profile shows a decrement in bioconvection Lewis and Rayleigh numbers. The nanofluid thermal profile is improved but the nanofluid velocity declined through the augmentation of volume fraction. Also, the coefficient of skin friction and Nusselt number are obtained versus various flow parameters.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the impact towards the performance of silicon nanowire field-effect transistor (SiNWFET) for biosensing application based on different channel lengths of the nanowire. A device numerical modelling tool, Silvaco ATLAS was used to design three p-type SiNW-FET biosensors with differentlengths of 0.5, 1.0, and 10.0 μm. The designed devices were simulated in order to observe and compare the effect of different channel length towards the electrical characteristic of the devices. Increase of the nanowire channel length had caused reduction of drain current, ID flowed through the channel from drain to source region. This is related to the increase of electrical resistance, R of the nanowire with the increase of nanowire length, L. In a way to study the effect of different channel lengths on the performance of the SiNW-FET biosensor, several negatively interfuce charge densities, QF (i.e. -0.1x1012, -0.5x 1012, and -1x1012 cm·2) were introduced on the surface of the SiNW channel to represent as the actual target deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) captured by the bioreceptor of the biosensor. Based on the results, these negatively QF attracted the hole carriers below the surface of p-type nanowire to form an accumulation of charge carriers in the channel, causing an increase in the device output ID. Increase of the applied negative charge density had allowed for more ID to flow across the channel between drain and source region. The changes of ID with the applied Q F are utilized to determine the sensitivities and limit of detections (LOD) for all designed biosensor with different channel lengths. In comparison, the smallest nanowire length of 0.5 μm produced the highest sensitivity and lowest LOD of 2.17 μA/cm·2 and 7.85x 1010 cm·2, respectively, hence demonstrates better performance of SiNW-FET biosensor for the detection of specific charged DNA in analyte. Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of different doping concentrations on the performance of a polycrystalline silicon nanowire (poly-SiNW) field-effect transistor (FET) for biosensing application. The p-type poly-SiNW FET biosensor was designed and simulated in a commercial numerical simulation, Silvaco ATLAS. Three different p-type doping concentrations (i.e. 0.5x1018, 1x1018, and 5x1018 cm-3) were applied to the channel of the designed biosensor in order to observe their substantial impact on the device electrical characteristic through the simulation process. The doping concentration was indirectly proportional to the electrical resistivity, p of the poly-SiNW channel. Therefore, the reduction of doping concentration had caused the nanowire to exhibit higher electrical resistance, R. Furthermore, the biosensor performance during detection was investigated through the application of several negatively interface charge densities, QF (i.e. -0.1x1012, -0.5x1012, and -1x1012 cm-2) on the surface of the poly-SiNW channel, to imitate the availability of negatively charged target deoxyribonucleic acid (DNAs) captured on the surface of the biosensor. The increase of negatively QF on the channel region of the poly-SiNW had caused accumulation of hole conduction channel beneath the poly-SiNW surface, hence allowed more drain current, ID to flow from drain to source region. The changes in ID values due to the applied QF that represent the different concentrations of captured target DNA by the biosensor were used to calculate the sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) for the biosensor. Poly-SiNW biosensor with low doping concentration of 0.5x 1018 cm-3 had demonstrated higher sensitivity of 0.29 μA/cm-2 with low LOD down to 8.28x 1010 cm-2, and therefore can be considered to be utilized in the actual fabrication of the poly-SiNW FET biosensor. Abstract

In viticulture, various techniques can be used to improve productivity, tolerance to biotic or abiotic stress, the quality of grapes and wines such as the use of plant regulators and biostimulants. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of application of abscisic acid (S-ABA), Ascophyllum nodosum (A. nodosum) seaweed extract and Aloe vera (A. vera) gel on phenolic composition and chromatic characteristics of grapes from the 'Cabernet Sauvignon' variety. The experiment was conducted in a commercial vineyard in Campo Largo - Paraná, in two consecutive seasons, 2017/18 and 2018/19, involving the following treatments: 1) control; 2) (S-ABA) 400 mg/L; 3) S- ABA 600 mg/L; 4) A. vera gel 200 mL/L; 5) A. vera gel 400 mL/L; 6) seaweed extract 0.2 mL/L; 7) seaweed extract 0.4 mL/L. Two applications were performed with the seaweed extract and A. gel when the bunches were at veraison stage (50 and 75% of grape berries with coloration). Total anthocyanins content, total polyphenols content and activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase enzymes were assessed in the berries skin. Total anthocyanins, individual anthocyanins and total polyphenol contents as well as lightness, chroma and hue angle were analyzed in the corresponding wines. S-ABA increased the content of anthocyanins and total polyphenols, as well as the activity of PAL in the first season. A. nodosum (AN) seaweed extract increased the total polyphenol content, total anthocyanins content and PAL in the berry skin of 'Cabernet Sauvignon' variety. S-ABA increased the total polyphenol content and anthocyanins in wine, as well as the A. nodosum, in at least one of the evaluated seasons.

Abstract

The molecular mechanisms of plant recognition, colonization, and nutrient exchange between diazotrophic endophytes and plants are scarcely known. Herbaspirillum seropedicae is an endophytic bacterium capable of colonizing intercellular spaces of grasses such as rice and sugar cane. The genome of H. seropedicae strain SmR1 was sequenced and annotated by The Parana´ State Genome Programme?GENOPAR. The genome is composed of a circular chromosome of 5,513,887 bp and contains a total of 4,804 genes. The genome sequence revealed that H. seropedicae is a highly versatile microorganism with capacity to metabolize a wide range of carbon and nitrogen sources and with possession of four distinct terminal oxidases. The genome contains a multitude of protein secretion systems, including type I, type II, type III, type V, and type VI secretion systems, and type IV pili, suggesting a high potential to interact with host plants. H. seropedicae is able to synthesize indole acetic acid as reflected by the four IAA biosynthetic pathways present. A gene coding for ACC deaminase, which may be involved in modulating the associated plant ethylene-signaling pathway, is also present. Genes for hemagglutinins/ hemolysins/adhesins were found and may play a role in plant cell surface adhesion. These features may endow H. seropedicae with the ability to establish an endophytic life-style in a large number of plant species.
