Research has often emphasised that children who experience difficulties in learning to read get poorer in their performance, and the gap between good and poor readers increases over time which describes the well-accepted phenomenon called the Mathew Effect. However, some studies have shown that the Matthew Effect has not been confirmed. In this study, the reading growth curves of Turkish-speaking children and the existence of the Matthew Effect in their performances were examined. For this purpose, the reading skills of 482 children were measured twice a year in the first and second grades. A quadratic growth model successfully fit the data to explain overall reading performance across four-time points. Further, three latent classes, named as good, moderate, and poor readers, were identified on the basis of individual trajectories. Accordingly, the difference in performance between good readers and poor readers continued in all time points. Although the difference between classes continued to increase especially in the second and third time points, and supported the Matthew Effect, it showed a horizontal slope in the fourth time point. This slope shows that reading differences between classes may close in the future. The results were discussed on the basis of Turkish sample.

Purpose: In organisational and innovation research, the term "open innovation" refers to the inflow and outflow of knowledge to and from organisations--with open innovation theory suggesting active exchanges of knowledge with external actors leads to the development of exploitable new ideas. In the field of education, however, the exchange of knowledge with external parties represents a paradigm shift. In response, this article presents findings from research design to explore the nature and composition of school innovation networks, and the effects of such these networks on knowledge mobilisation. Design/methodology/approach: The study draws on data from a representative random sample of 411 German school leaders. Respondents were asked to detail their engagement in open and closed innovation activity and their school's external collaborations during the last 12 months. A latent class distal outcome model was developed to examine whether different types of collaboration associate with different knowledge mobilisation processes. Findings: The study findings suggest that schools in Germany mainly use internal knowledge for innovation, with external knowledge exchange taking place on a very limited basis. Knowledge mobilisation varies depending on the innovation network. The authors use the findings to indicate new insights for how schools can further innovate learning and teaching in future. Originality/value: Although there is increasing discussion on Professional Learning Networks in schools, the discourse on knowledge mobilisation within educational networks is limited, making concept of open innovation so far completely absent from discourses on school improvement. This paper initiates the population of this new research space.

Education researchers, policy makers, and practitioners have emphasized the role that social-emotional learning and self-regulation play in children's adjustment and connection to school, particularly as they transition from pre-school to kindergarten and the primary grades. A pretest-posttest cluster-randomized efficacy trial of the Social-Emotional Learning Foundations (SELF) curriculum for kindergarten-first-grade students found positive main effects on assessments of self-regulation, social-emotional learning, social-emotional vocabulary, and general behavioral functioning. This study is a secondary analysis using structural equation modeling to explore whether SELF effects on school adjustment were mediated by its effects on language and/or self-regulation-related outcomes. Findings replicated direct effects of treatment but did not support hypothesized mediators. In contrast, direct effects of treatment on measures of competent school functioning and internalizing behavior were mediated by outcome effects on a standardized measure of social-emotional learning competence. Study findings underscore the fundamental importance of social-emotional learning to school success and suggest related measurement issues in social-emotional learning and topics for further research.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of media literacy and attitudes towards socioscientific issues as two major predictors of informal reasoning. A sample of 208 preservice science teachers completed an open-ended informal reasoning questionnaire on hydroelectric power plant issue, media literacy level determination scale, and attitudes towards socio-scientific issues scale. In this study, descriptive research method was used. We used both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. Results indicated that the participants frequently used ecological-oriented arguments. The participants least used health-oriented arguments. Regarding reasoning qualities, the participants typically created supportive arguments, rather than counterarguments and rebuttals. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed validity and reliability evidence consistent with previous research. Multiple regression analyses revealed that perceived level of media literacy predicted informal reasoning. However, attitudes towards socioscientific issues did not explain informal reasoning. We offer implications for science teacher education programs.

A few studies have investigated what general public know about autism in international literature and there is no study conducted for this purpose in Turkey. This study examined autism knowledge of the general public in Turkey using a street survey. A total of 874 individuals participated in the study across five cities. Overall, findings showed that participants had low levels of knowledge about autism. However, participants who had family members with autism had a significantly higher level of knowledge than those who did not have family members with autism. With respect to demographics, participants who were male, student and those who had a college or graduate degree had higher level of autism knowledge. Results call for continued efforts to raise autism awareness, especially targeting individuals who do not have family members or relatives with autism. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Decomposing variables into between and within components are often required in multilevel analysis. This method of decomposition should not ignore possible unreliability of an observed group mean (i.e., arithmetic mean) that is due to small cluster sizes and can lead to substantially biased estimates. Adjustment procedures that allow unbiased estimation have been defined and implemented in software for a two-level model. This study shows how to implement a two-stage adjustment procedure in a three-level design. A simulation study showed that the adjustment procedure provides unbiased estimates. To demonstrate how the adjustment procedure can change results in a real data context, an illustration is provided using a set up in which 355 Level-1 units are nested in 93 Level-2 and 19 Level-3 units.

AbstractSchools’ digitalization requires a shift of stakeholders’ mindsets, specific forms of leadership, and strategic knowledge management to deal with current and future educational challenges. The relationship between school leaders’ open innovation mindset, transformational leadership, knowledge management practices, and the effects on digital innovation are presented. A random sample of German school leaders is analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the construct of school leaders’ open innovation mindset followed by structural equation modeling. Results show that digital innovations and transformational leadership in schools require school leaders with an open innovation mindset who foster a collaborative culture of knowledge exchange. This Monte Carlo simulation study compares methods to estimate the effects of programs with multiple versions when assignment of individuals to program version is not random. These methods use generalized propensity scores, which are predicted probabilities of receiving a particular level of the treatment conditional on covariates, to remove selection bias. The results indicate that inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) removes the most bias, followed by optimal full matching (OFM), and marginal mean weighting through stratification (MMWTS). The study also compared standard error estimation with Taylor series linearization, bootstrapping and the jackknife across propensity score methods. With IPTW, these standard error estimation methods performed adequately, but standard errors estimates were biased in most conditions with OFM and MMWTS.

We investigated methods of including covariates in two-level models for cluster randomized trials to increase power to detect the treatment effect. We compared multilevel models that included either an observed cluster mean or a latent cluster mean as a covariate, as well as the effect of including Level 1 deviation scores in the model. A Monte Carlo simulation study was performed manipulating effect sizes, cluster sizes, number of clusters, intraclass correlation of the outcome, patterns of missing data, and the squared correlations between Level 1 and Level 2 covariates and the outcome. We found no substantial difference between models with observed means or latent means with respect to convergence, Type I error rates, coverage, and bias. However, coverage could fall outside of acceptable limits if a latent mean is included as a covariate when cluster sizes are small. In terms of statistical power, models with observed means performed similarly to models with latent means, but better when cluster sizes were small. A demonstration is provided using data from a study of the Tools for Getting Along intervention.

Social-emotional learning curricula to prevent student problematic behaviors should play a prominent role in public school instruction. While social-emotional curricula have been shown to be effective, there are few replication studies that substantiate their capacity to improve outcomes for students who exhibit problem behaviors. Thus, we conducted a partial replication of a randomized controlled field trial of the Tools for Getting Along curriculum designed to increase self-regulatory functions of upper elementary school students. We found main effects on social problem-solving and significant pretest-by-condition interaction effects on teacher-reported executive function, behavioral adjustment, and aggression. We also found interaction effects on student-reported anger. The current findings are similar to the results reported for the initial study. We also specified high-risk subsamples of students for each of eight outcome factors and found main effects on emotion regulation and positive social problem-solving and a marginally significant effect on metacognition.

Inclusion of young children with disabilities into general education classrooms is a common practice that has been implemented for many years in developed countries around the world and many developing countries have been creating and implementing laws and regulations to support inclusive education in early years. Although extant literature includes a commonly agreed definition for inclusion, the implementation of inclusive practices varies across countries. A critical factor for successful implementation of inclusive practices is teachers' attitudes towards inclusion of children with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to compare Turkish and American pre-service preschool teachers' attitudes towards inclusion of young children with disabilities and their willingness to work with children with severe behavioural, physical, and cognitive disabilities. A total of 123 pre-service teachers participated in the study. The results showed that pre-service teachers across two countries had similar attitudes towards inclusion and their attitudes were positive. Additionally, both groups of pre-service teachers reported more favourable attitudes towards working with children with severe physical disabilities than those who have severe cognitive and behavioural disabilities. Implications for future research and practices are discussed.

This research aims to investigate the client's perceptions of the effects of an online psychological counselling intervention built on a cognitive behavioural framework on health anxiety. The status study pattern from qualitative research techniques was applied in this study. Research subjects are chosen using a criteria sampling methodology from purpose sampling techniques. Accordingly, the research's working group has not been diagnosed, but has created three consultants who have high health concerns and are involved in online psychological counseling intervention based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The research used a semistructured interview form developed by the researcher as a data collection tool. In the analysis of research data, the thematic analysis method was included. Analysis of the data was done with the NVivo 12 package program, which received the trial version. According to the research findings, the online CBT intervention reduces health anxiety, improves the skills of thinking more realistically and realising cognitive thinking characteristics, and has a positive effect on social relations. It has also been determined that it improves problem solving skills and is effective in reducing concerns other than health anxiety. The ability to attend therapy sessions from different locations was also seen as a positive aspect of the online CBT intervention. The advisors also emphasised the ability to use time productively and the lower costs compared to in-person therapy as two additional benefits. Additionally, the issue of internet-related technical issues and distractions brought on by less variance in body language have been identified as undesirable aspects of the online CBT session.
