Purpose: To investigate choroidal vascularity in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were not receiving therapy, children with ADHD who were regularly taking methylphenidate (MPH), and healthy controls. Methods: The study included three groups: patients with newly diagnosed ADHD without treatment, patients diagnosed as having ADHD who were already being treated with oral MPH, and controls. Both choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choroidal thickness were measured using an enhanced-depth imaging mode of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDIOCT) (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engineering GmbH). Results: There was a significant difference in CVI and stromal area between groups. Post-hoc univariate analysis showed that CVI was significantly lower in patients with ADHD treated with MPH compared with the other groups (P <.001, for each); however, there was no difference between the treatment-free ADHD group and controls (P =.305). In contrast, stromal area was significantly higher in patients with ADHD treated with MPH than the other groups (P <.001, for each group). The correlation of CVI with MPH treatment duration in patients with ADHD treated with MPH showed a significant, moderate negative correlation (P =.01, r = − 0.66). Conclusions: CVI is reduced in patients with ADHD treated with MPH, and the decrease in CVI becomes significant with increasing duration of MPH treatment. Objective: To evaluate the macula, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), retinal layers, and choroidal thickness (CT) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in patients with alopecia areata (AA). Methods: The right eyes of 42 AA patients (17 women, 25 men) and 42 controls (18 women, 24 men) were included in the study. Each subject underwent thorough ophthalmic examination and SD-OCT (Heidelberg Engineering) measurements. Central macular thickness (CMT), RNFL, the average thicknesses of the ganglion cell layer (GCL), inner plexiform layer (IPL), inner nuclear layer (INL), outer plexiform layer (OPL), outer nuclear layer (ONL), retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), inner retinal layers (IRL), photoreceptor layers (PRL) as well as subfoveal, temporal and nasal CT were measured. Results: In all sectors, no significant difference was observed between the AA group and the control group with regard to the mean values for CMT and RNFL (p>0.05, for all). There was not a significant difference between the AA group and the control group with regard to the thickness of the GCL, IPL, INL, OPL, ONL, RPE, IRL, and PRL (p>0.05 for all). CT at the subfoveal, temporal, and nasal regions was significantly thicker in the AA group than in the control group (p<0.05 for all). Conclusions: Along with T-lymphocyte-mediated hair follicle damage, choroidal melanocyte damage and inflammation can also be observed in AA patients. Objectives: To compare upper eyelid blepharoplasty patients' suture techniques with interrupted cutaneous in one eye and running cutaneous in the other in terms of edema, ecchymosis, and scar index. Methods: Among patients whose suture techniques with interrupted cutaneous in one eye and running cutaneous in the other, 34 patients in the vicryl group and 46 patients in the polypropylene group were included in the study. The patients' edema and ecchymosis levels on postoperative days 1, 7, and 30 days and 3 months were selected. The Manchester Scar Scale was used to evaluate the scar index at 30 days and 3 months after surgery. Suture material (either 6-0 polypropylene sutures or 6-0 vicryl sutures) were evaluated independently. Results: In vicryl group, there was significantly less ecchymosis and edema first week postoperatively in interrupted sutured eyelid than running sutured eyelid (p=0.001, p=0.011, respectively). In polypropylene group, there was significantly less ecchymosis at the first day and first week postoperatively in interrupted sutured eyelid than running sutured eyelid (p=0.025, p=0.001, respectively). The total scar index scores in both groups at first month and third month were significantly better at the interrupted sutured eyelid than running sutured eyelid (p<0.05, for all). Conclusion: In upper eyelid blepharoplasty, an interrupted suture technique yielded the lowest rates of edema, ecchymosis, and scar formation compared with a running suture technique. Objectives: This study examined the effect of antiglaucomatous drops with different preservatives on corneal biomechanics using the ocular response analyzer (ORA) (Reichert Technologies, Inc., Depew, NY, USA). Methods: Patients using antiglaucomatous medical treatment containing a single agent combined with a preservative for at least 1 year who underwent a control examination between January and December 2017 at a glaucoma unit were included in this retrospective study. The patients were divided into 5 groups according to the antiglaucomatous agent and preservative ingredients. Measurements were taken with the ORA and compared with a control group. Results: A total of 83 eyes treated eyes were included and analyzed. Thirty-three eyes of 33 patients were treated with latanoprost+benzalkonium chloride (BAC), 17 eyes of 17 patients were treated with travoprost+polyquad, 7 eyes of 7 patients were treated with bimatoprost+BAC, 18 eyes of 18 patients were treated with brimonidine+purite, 8 eyes of 8 patients were treated with brimonidine+BAC. A control group of 23 eyes of 23 healthy patients was also assessed for comparison. A significant decrease in corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) was seen in the patients using bimatoprost+BAC and brimonidine+BAC when compared with the control group. Evaluation of the bimatoprost+BAC group and the latanoprost+BAC group revealed that the CH and the CRF was significantly lower in the group using bimatoprost+BAC (p<0.01). Conclusion: It has been reported that CH is a more important prognostic marker than central corneal thickness in glaucoma patients. Loss of visual field progresses faster in eyes with a low CH. Both preservatives and the active antiglaucomatous agents in medications can affect CH. Variation in CH in patients using antiglaucomatous drops over a long period is important in both the progression and follow-up of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Evaluation of changes in the ocular surfaces in children with a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis (AD)., Methods: Thirty-six children with a diagnosis of AD (Eye-AD group) and 40 healthy subjects (Eye-HS group) were enrolled in this prospective case-control study. Tear film break-up time (T-BUT), Schirmer tear test (STT), conjunctival impression cytology (CIC), tear meniscus height (TMH), tear meniscus area (TMA), and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) were measured., Results: The participants were similar in terms of demographic characteristics, such as mean age and gender (p > 0.05). The mean T-BUT was 9.3 ± 2.22 s (5 - 16) in the Eye-AD group and 11.83 ± 2.03 s (7 - 16) in the Eye-HS group. The mean STT was 11.12 ± 3.28 mm (5 - 21) in the Eye-AD group and 15.44 ± 3.8 mm (8 - 20) in the Eye-HS group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively). The mean OSDI scores were 13.12 ± 1.41 (10 - 15) in the Eye-AD group and 13.97 ± 2.93 (8 - 20) in the Eye-HS group (p = 0.052). Mean TMH and TMA were 306.48 ± 7.29 µm and 0.22 ± 0.004 mm 2 , respectively, in the Eye-AD group, and 312.94 ± 5.31 µm and 0.027 ± 0.005 mm 2 , respectively, in the Eye-HS group. In the CIC analyses, 22 of the samples in the Eye-AD group and 35 in the Eye-HS group had a classification of grade 0, 10 in the Eye-AD group and 5 in the Eye-HS group had a classification of grade 1, and 4 in the Eye-AD group and none in the Eye-HS group had a classification of grade 2 (p = 0.015)., Conclusion: Pediatric patients with AD may have significant changes in conjunctival histopathology. These changes can be manifested in the tests used to measure the tear film. Objectives: This study investigated the retinal layer thickness, choroidal thickness (CT), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) parameters in 3 refractive groups., Methods: A total of 201 eyes of 201 subjects were enrolled in this prospective and comparative study. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to refractive status: Group 1 consisted of 60 eyes of myopic subjects, Group 2 comprised 72 eyes of emmetropic subjects, and 69 eyes of hyperopic subjects were categorized as Group 3. The retinal layer thickness, CT, and RNFL parameters were measured using optical coherence tomography and compared between groups., Results: The mean age of the patients was 22.33±10.11 years in Group 1, 21.55±8.3 years in Group 2, and 23.73±11.08 years in Group 3 (p=0.741). Group 1 consisted of 34 women and 26 men, Group 2 contained 44 women and 28 men, and Group 3 was made up of 45 women and 24 men (p=0.124). The mean spherical equivalent value was -6.16±2.01 D in Group 1, 0.13±0.5 D in Group 2, and 5.48±1.32 D in Group 3 (p<0.001). The RNFL and macular thickness values were lower in the myopic patients compared with those of the other groups (p<0.05).
