2. Recent Progress in Aluminium Matrix Composites: A Review on Tribological Performance

Abstract

Aluminium (Al) matrix composites are widely used in the automotive and aerospace sectors due to their low density, high specific strength, and excellent tribological performance. Although wear studies on Al matrix composites started approximately 40 years ago, they still continue to attract. This review reports the latest developments on the wear performance of up-to-date Al matrix composites. For this reason, the effect of different factors such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance, temperature, particle content, and particle size on tribological performance was investigated, considering the coefficient of friction and wear rate. Dominant wear mechanisms depending on wear parameters were also evaluated. Consequently, the review provides the challenges and future research directions in the tribology of Al matrix composites. © The Indian Institute of Metals - IIM 2024.

3. Recent advances in the corrosion performance of magnesium matrix composites: a review

Abstract

This study reviews the recent developments in the corrosion performance of Mg matrix composites. The mechanical and tribological performance of Mg is significantly enhanced by the production of Mg matrix composites. However, the corrosion performance of Mg matrix composites can be negatively affected by adding reinforcement particles, especially in aqueous environments. Therefore, it is necessary to know the corrosion rates of Mg matrix composites. While this review reports the results of different corrosion tests such as potentiodynamic polarisation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, immersion and hydrogen evolution, it also discusses the reasons for the increase/decrease of corrosion performance of the Mg matrix composites. This review also reports challenges and future recommendations for Mg matrix composites. © 2024 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.

4. Recent advances in mechanical properties of Mg matrix composites: a review

Abstract

Magnesium (Mg), with a density of two-thirds of aluminium (Al) and one-fourth of steel, has become one of the most attractive materials for automotive and aerospace industries owing to the obligation to reduce fuel consumption and gas emissions. However, the poor mechanical property of Mg is one of the most significant barriers to its widespread use. The most widely used method to increase the use potential of Mg is the development of Mg matrix composites. This review focuses on the mechanical properties of recent Mg matrix composites. The effect of different reinforcement materials on the mechanical behaviour and failure mechanisms of Mg matrix composites was evaluated in detail. © The Author(s) 2024.

21. Incidence trends, histological subtypes, and topographical distribution of bladder cancer in Iran: a study based on the Iranian National Cancer Registry during 2006-2015

Abstract

BackgroundBladder cancer (BCa) is a significant public health concern. This study aimed to analyze the incidence trends, histological subtypes, and topographical distribution of BCa in Iran over a decade.MethodsThis retrospective registry-based study analyzed data on BCa patients diagnosed between March 20, 2006, and March 20, 2015. Following data quality control, age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) were calculated for BCa overall, by sex and histological subtype using the new World Health Organization (WHO) standard population.ResultsWe identified 51,379 BCa cases (81.97% male) with a mean age of 65.10 ± 14.89 years. The overall ASIR was 8.92 per 100,000 (95% CI: 8.84-9.00). While a modest increase in ASIR was observed overall (8.77 in 2006 to 9.64 in 2015) and among males (14.13 in 2006 to 15.95 in 2015) during the study period, males consistently had a significantly higher ASIR compared to females (approximately 4.5:1 ratio). BCa incidence showed a progressive increase across older age groups, particularly those aged 40-44 to 80-84 years. Urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) was the most prevalent histological type (ASIR: 8.19 to 7.93), followed by adenocarcinoma (AC; ASIR: 0.13 to 0.11). Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) displayed a decreasing trend (ASIR: 0.11 to 0.06). Both UCC and AC were more frequent in males (approximately 5 and 3 times higher than females, respectively). Malignant neoplasm of the bladder, unspecified, constituted over 95% of BCa topography classifications.ConclusionThis study identified a modest rise in BCa incidence, with male predominance and a higher burden in older adults. Further investigation into potential risk factors contributing to this increase is warranted.

18th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in Digital Age, CELDA 2021 -- 13 October 2021 through 15 October 2021 -- -- 174791, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become widespread all around the world since their conceptualization, both in terms of the number of students enrolled and the number of courses available. Some issues or learner needs in these environments, such as accreditation, quality of assessment and scaffolding for left-behind learners, have also surfaced as a result of rise in popularity. Profiling learners, using scaffolding strategies, structuring the assessment in a dynamic and effective manner, monitoring performance, and providing feedback/feedforward based on learning analytics are all expected to be valuable solutions to these issues. In this study, it is aimed to describe student views on the MOOC platform, which has the above-mentioned features and was designed and developed according to the AGILE software development model. Participants of this case study consist of 53 undergraduate students from three different universities. The data was collected using a questionnaire and semi-structured form both of which were developed by the researchers. The findings obtained were considered under these themes: benefits, disliked aspects, preferences in different learning contexts, ease of use, features open to improvement. Findings based on both quantitative and qualitative interpretations are presented on each theme. The findings of this study are limited to student views. In addition to these, online environments provide more opportunities to assess of the learners. In this study, the Adaptive Mastery Testing (AMT) system in Assessment Management System was designed and developed in which students can test themselves, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and determine their learning objective based competencies. AMT environment is structured in accordance with the rapid prototyping software developing model. In this environment, there are questions for the students about four learning objectives, which are among the basic subjects of the Statistics course. AMT environment consists of presentation, assessment, domain and learner model. Pilot implementation was carried out with 98 undergraduate students. In order to evaluate of the environment; number of tests taken, number of correct answer, number of wrong answer and number of total answer data were used. According to the findings, it is seen that most of the students are masters in the learning objectives presented to them. In addition, it was found that half of the students took an average test to become a master. In other words, half of the learners participating in the study were determined as masters by the system in the first test they took for each learning objective. © 2021 Virtual Simulation Innovation Workshop, SIW 2021. Abstract

Bu çalışma Mehmet Kenan Şahin’in kaleme aldığı “İmâm Mâtürîdî’nin İman ve Ahlâk Anlayışı (Te’vilâtü’l-Kur’ân ve Kitâbü’t-Tevhîd Bağlamında)” isimli eserini içermektedir. Şahin, Mâtürîdî’nin iman, amel, insan ve ahlâk anlayışı hakkındaki görüşlerini onun Kitâbü’t-Tevhîd ve Te’vîlâtü’l-Ku’rân adlı iki önemli eserini dikkate alarak belirlemeye çalışmıştır. Şahin, İmâm Mâtürîdî’nin iman tanımını yaşadığı dönemdeki iman anlayışlarından daha farklı bir yaklaşımla izah ettiğini savunmaktadır. Bununla birlikte inceleyeceğimiz bu çalışmada yazar, Mâtürîdî’nin eserlerinde sıklıkla imân ile ahlâkî yaşam arasında çok sıkı bir bağ kurduğuna dikkat çekmiştir.

Abstract

Background: Pekmez is an important fruit-based food of Turkish culinary culture. The aim of this study is to determine the levels of acrylamide (AA), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) and other selected parameters in grape, mulberry and carob Pekmez. Methods: AA and HMF were analyzed by Liquid Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography, respectively. Also, glucose, fructose, pH, protein, total phenolic, and color (L*a*b*) were analyzed. The analyses were done by IBM SPSS Statistics 26 software. Results: The average AA, HMF, glucose, fructose, total reducing sugar, pH, protein, total phenolic, and colour (L*a*b*) values of Pekmez were 302 µg/kg, 25.7 mg/kg, 13.2%, 14.0%, 27.2%, 5.27, 1.16%, 4.64 mg GAE/g, and 4.83*5.60*1.52, respectively. AA indicates a moderate positive linear correlation with HMF, protein, total phenolic; whereas AA indicates a moderate negative linear correlation with glucose, fructose, total reducing sugar, pH, and L*a*b. Conclusion: It is presumed that heat treatment is a determinant in AA and HMF formulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

45. Circularly Polarized Metamaterial Patch Antenna Circuitry for Modern MIMO Applications

Abstract

This research is an attempt to highlight that the presented antenna design is proposed for modern wireless communication systems, including 5G networks. The proposed antenna design is structured to realize a reconfigurable antenna terminal to suit smart wireless systems. Therefore, the proposed antenna is structured from twelve-unit cells of metamaterial (MTM) inclusions. For this, effectively, the proposed antenna profile is reduced to 0.21λ0, where λo is the free space wavelength at 2.45GHz, which occupies 40 × 30 mm2 equivalently. This is accomplished by using T-resonator inductors to conduct 3rd iteration Hilbert-shaped MTM inclusions. The proposed antenna is printed on a substrate to cover the frequency bands from 2.6GHz to 4.4GHz. To optimize the antenna performances, a numerical-parametric analysis based on CST MWS commercial software package formulations is invoked for this study. The suggested antenna performance is numerically evaluated for validation using the HFSS software suite. The antenna has great performance while being sufficiently small to be used with integrated electronics.

Abstract

Objective: Pemphigus, expressing a life-threatening blistering disease, result from autoantibodies against the proteins that mediate intercellular adhesion in desmosomes, namely desmoglein 1 and/or 3. The importance of cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen (CTLA)-4 in negative regulation of T lymphocytes, which take part in this autoimmune reaction, is well known. Gene polymorphisms regarding this molecule affect autoimmunity. We aimed to determine whether CTLA-4 +49 A/G, -318 C/T, -1661 A/G and CT60 A/G gene polymorphisms cause susceptibility to pemphigus in Turkish population. Methods: We detected genotypes of the single nucleotide polymorphisms for 118 pemphigus patients and 108 healthy individuals with the help of polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results: Distribution of the CTLA-4 +49 A/G, -318 C/T, -1661 A/G and CT60 A/G allele and genotype frequencies did not differ between pemphigus patients and healthy controls (p=0.643, OR=0.931; p=0.847, OR=1.160; p=0.968, OR=0.975; p=0.173, OR=1.303, respectively). Conclusion: We concluded that these polymorphisms are not associated with pemphigus susceptibility in Turkish population. This is the first study investigating the possible role of the 4 CTLA single nucleotide polymorphism in pemphigus susceptibility simultaneously. Abstract

The boron occupies an important place on contributions and its usage is getting widespread. Although the use of boron-added mineral oils serves to reduce friction, environmental risks can not be totally removed. It is necessary to improve the properties of biological oils used for additives so that they can compete with mineral oils technically. In the study, the use of liquid boron as an additive for engine lubrication oil together with vegetable oil was investigated experimentally in two diesel engines. Experiments were first carried out using mineral lubrication oil in the engine, and then the experiments were repeated using mineral base oil with additives in the second engine with the same technical characteristics as the first engine. Basically, the study was performed in the fields of engine performance (torque, power, consumption per hour, specific fuel consumption) and exhaust emissions (CO, CO2, HC, O2, SO2, NOx). Abstract

Involvement of the renal artery is common in Takayasu arteritis. We, herein, present on a patient with Takayasu arteritis causing severe renal failure and a successful auto-transplantation. This case shows that early diagnosis and immediate appropriate interventions are life-saving in patients with Takayasu arteritis.
