The study examined differences in students’ conceptual and procedural knowledge of angles among two grades and gender. Participants were 382 sixth and 376 seventh graders from a metropolitan city in Turkey. Turkish students’ conceptual and procedural knowledge of angles declined from sixth to seventh grade. Gender differences were found for procedural knowledge, but not for conceptual knowledge. Since conceptual and procedural knowledge of angles may have significant influences on the essential subsequent topics in geometry, we need to seriously consider the implications of these gender- and grade-related differences and pay attention particularly to males in Grade 7. The patterns of Turkish students’ conceptual and procedural angle knowledge were discussed, and educational implications were offered.

Bu çalışmanın amacı Okulda Üniversite Modeli-temelli öğretim ile 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin kesir bilgisinin geliştirilmesine yönelik çabaları incelemektir. Araştırmaya 2014-2015 eğitim- öğretim yılında İstanbul ilinde bulunan 2 devlet okulunda 5. sınıfta okumakta olan toplam 220 öğrenci katılmıştır. Üniversite-okul işbirliği kapsamında yürütülen çalışmada öğretim üyeleri öğretmen-araştırmacı olarak rol almıştır., Bu çalışmada deney (n= 4 sınıf) ve kontrol (n= 5 sınıf) grubu olarak iki grup seçilmiştir. Kesirler konusu deney gruplarında öğretmen- araştırmacılar tarafından Okulda Üniversite Modeli-temelli öğretim yöntemiyle, kontrol gruplarında ise matematik öğretmenleri tarafından geleneksel öğretim yöntemiyle işlenmiştir. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde İlişkisiz Örneklemler t-Testi ve Çift-Faktörlü Kovaryans Analizi kullanılmıştır. Ek olarak, öğrencilerin uygulamaya yönelik düşünceleri hakkında bilgi edinmek üzere açık-uçlu görüş formu uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre, Okulda Üniversite Modeli-temelli öğretimin geleneksel öğretime göre beşinci sınıf öğrencilerinin kesir bilgilerine istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir etkisi vardır. Öğrenci görüşlerinden elde edilen bilgilere göre Okulda Üniversite Modeli-temelli öğretimin matematik dersine ilgiyi arttırdığı görülmüştür. Çalışmanın eğitimsel ve yöntemsel uygulamaları tartışılmıştır. Through a university-school partnership, the aim of the present study was to investigate the efforts from University within School Model-based instruction, within which faculty members acted as teacher-researchers, to improve fifth grade students’ fractional knowledge. During 2014-2015, 220 fifth grade students from 2 public middle schools in İstanbul participated in the study. Two groups were selected as experimental (n= 4 classrooms) and control (n= 5 classrooms). In the experimental groups fractions was taught by teacher-researchers with University within School Model-based instruction, whereas in the control groups the fractions unit was taught by the mathematics teachers with traditional instruction. Data were analyzed by performing Independent Samples t-Test and Two-Factor ANCOVA. Additionally, students’ reflections were presented in order to provide readers with an indepth understanding of the implementation. Results revealed that University within School Model-based instruction, as compared to traditional instruction, had a significant effect on students’ fractional knowledge. Bu araştırmanın amacı, Wren ve Benson (2004) tarafından geliştirilen “Çocuklarda Sınav Kaygısı Ölçeği”ni (CTAS, Children’s Test Anxiety Scale) Türkçe’ye uyarlayarak geçerlik ve güvenirliğini araştırmaktır. Özgün ölçek İngilizce’dir ve üç boyutta toplam 30 maddeden oluşan dörtlü likert tipi bir ölçüm aracıdır. Uyarlama çalışması için ölçek maddeleri Türkçe’ye çevrilmiş ve bu çevirinin uygunluğunu ve anlam bütünlüğünü sağlamak için alanlarında bilgili yedi uzmanın görüşleri alınarak dil geçerliği sağlanmıştır. Çeviri işlemleri sonrasında pilot çalışması yapılan ölçeğe son hali verilmiştir. Türkçe form 3 farklı devlet okulunun 3., 4., 5., ve 6. sınıflarında okuyan 1100 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Ölçeğin yapı geçerliğine ilişkin doğrulayıcı faktör analizinden elde edilen bulgular, orijinal çalışmadaki üç faktörlü yapıyı destekler niteliktedir. Ölçeğin alt boyutları: Düşünceler (Thoughts), Görev Dışı Davranışlar (Off-Task Behaviors), ve Otonom Tepkiler (Autonomic Reactions)’dir. Tüm ölçek (.88) ve ölçeğin Düşünceler (.82), Görev Dışı Davranışlar (.72), ve Otonom Tepkiler (.75) alt boyutları için Cronbach Alfa içtutarlık katsayıları yüksek seviyededir. Ayırt edici geçerlik analizleri kız ve erkeklerin sınav kaygısı ortalama puanları arasında anlamlı bir fark olmadığını gösterirken sınıf düzeyi açısından anlamlı farklılıklar gözlemlenmiştir. Yapılan analizlerin sonuçları, Türkçe’ye uyarlama çalışması gerçekleştirilen bu ölçeğin öğrencilerin sınav kaygı düzeylerini belirlemede geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçek olduğunu göstermektedir. Ölçeğin matematik eğitiminde kullanım alanları tartışılmış ve matematik kaygısına odaklanacak gelecek araştırma çalışmaları için önerilerde bulunulmuştur. The purpose of this study was to adapt the “Children’s Test Anxiet Scale (CTAS)” developed by Wren and Benson (2004) into Turkish. The original scale was in English and comprised of three factors including 30 items. Seven experts were involved in the adaptation process to translate the scale into Turkish and then back to English for providing evidence based on the consistency between the two forms. Following the translation process, a pilot study was conducted and the scale was given its final form. The Turkish form was administered to 1100 students who were attending to 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classes in 3 public schools. Findings regarding the construct validity of the scale, which were obtained from the confirmatory analysis, supported the three-factor structure of the original scale. Subdimensions of the scale were Thoughts, Off-Task Behaviors, and Autonomic Reactions. Cronbach Alpha coefficients for the overall scale (???= .88) as well as the subdimensions of Thoughts (???= .82), Off-Task Behaviors (???= .72), and Autonomic Reactions (???= .75) were substantial in size. Regarding the discriminant validity analyses, there were no significant gender differences in students’ test anxiety while there were significant grade level differences. These results demonstrated that the Turkish version of the scale is a valid and reliable instrument, which may serve as useful in measuring elementary school students’ test anxiety levels. Directions for future research and practical implications for educational practice are discussed in terms of mathematics education. 282637

This study will examine school type differences in fifth-grade students’ fractional knowledge using data from a university-school partnership. The participants will be a total of 203 students from a public school and a private school in two districts willing to collaborate in the University within School Project. International large-scale assessments generally show that private school students outperform public school students in mathematics, science, and reading (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], 2009). While there is a strong theoretical impetus in the superiority of private schools, in more recent studies, after controlling for student and home background factors there appears to be little to no statistically significant school type differences in standardized test scores (OECD, 2013). In a related vein, Turkey had the largest variance internationally between schools in student performance: The overall achievement gap between the lower and higher achievers was large (OECD, 2007), and that this discrepancy was attributable to the between-school variation while controlling for family background and demographic characteristics (Alacacı & Erbaş, 2010).

Amaç : Çalışmamızın amacı, 2014 yılından itibaren MEF Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi’nde uygulanan, öğretmen adayı yetiştirme konusunda kuram ve pratiğe eşit derecede önem vererek yapılandırılan Okulda Üniversite Modeli ve bu modelin uygulama süreci ve çeşitli bağlamlarda değerlendirilmesi hakkında kapsamlı bilgi vermektir. Ulusal ve uluslararası ortamlarda bu modelin farklı kısımlarına odaklanmış araştırmalar sunulmuş fakat bu araştırmalar ortak bir çatı altında Türk Matematik Eğitimcileri ile paylaşılmamıştır. Bu sunum önerimiz ile modelin uygulama süreci ve çeşitli bağlamlarda değerlendirilmesini BİLMAT Kongresi’nde diğer Matematik Eğitimcilerle paylaşmaktır.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, üniversite-okul işbirliği kapsamında uygulanan, öğretim üyelerinin öğretmenaraştırmacı olarak rol aldığı, Okulda Üniversite Modeli temelli öğretimin 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin kesir bilgisinin geliştirilmesi üzerine etkisini araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla ölçme aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen çoktan seçmeli Kesirler Testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya 2014-2015 eğitim-öğretim yılında İstanbul ili, Sarıyer ilçesi’nde bulunan 2 devlet ortaokulunda öğrenim gören 220 beşinci sınıf öğrencisi (112 deney, 108 kontrol) katılmıştır. Yarı deneysel çalışmada yöntem olarak öntest-sontestkontrol gruplu desen kullanılmıştır. Grupların eşdeğer seviyede olup olmadığını belirlemek amacıyla Kesirler Testi öntest olarak deney ve kontrol gruplarına uygulanmış ve grupların istatistiksel olarak eşdeğer seviyede oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Daha sonra deney gruplarındaki öğrencilerin sınıflarında matematik dersleri Okulda Üniversite Modeli-temelli öğretim araştırmacılar tarafından gerçekleştirilirken kontrol gruplarında da geleneksel öğretim matematik öğretmenleri tarafından gerçekleştirilmiştir. Deneysel uygulamadan sonra, Kesirler Testi sontest olarak bütün gruplara uygulanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, Okulda Üniversite Modeli-temelli öğretimin geleneksel öğretime göre beşinci sınıf öğrencilerinin kesir bilgilerine istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir etkisi vardır. Bu sonuç bağlamında üniversite-okul işbirliğinin matematik eğitimi ve öğretimine önemli katkı sağladığı önerilmektedir. Çalışmanın eğitimsel uygulamaları tartışılmıştır.

In this study, clinical interviews focusing on students’ understanding of fractions as numbers on the number line were conducted with six fifth-grade students both before and after an intervention designed by teacher-researchers. Although in general students demonstrated improved understanding of fraction concepts even in situations requiring reversible thinking, difficulties in finding benchmarks on the number line and a limited awareness of density of fractions on the number line persisted among students.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Okulda Üniversite Modeli (OÜ Modeli) çerçevesinde tasarlanan programın 5.sınıf öğrencilerinin matematik başarısını ve sınıf içi katılımı nasıl geliştirdiğini araştırmaktır. OÜ Modeli yedi boyutlu bir eğitim modeli olup bu boyutlardan birisi de “öğretim üyelerinin mesleki gelişimini sağlamak”tır (Yazar, 2011, 2013). Bu boyutu gerçekleştirmeye yönelik, MEF Üniversitesi İlköğretim Matematik Öğretmenliği Bölümü dört öğretim üyesi 2014-2015 eğitim öğretim yılında İstanbul ili Sarıyer ilçesi’ne bağlı sosyoekonomik durumu düşük olan bir devlet okulunda, öğretmenlik deneyimi kazanmıştır. Araştırmaya konu olan program, Steffe ve Olive (2010)’nin öğrenme kuramını temel alan Kesir Şema Teorisi’ne dayalı etkinlikler oluşturularak tasarlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada daha detaya inilerek bir öğretim üyesinin öğretmenlik yaptığı 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin (deney grubu) sorumlu konuşma (Michaels vd., 2010) yetilerini nasıl kazandıkları ve öğretim esnasında JAVABARS bilgisayar programını (Olive, 2007) nasıl kullandıkları paylaşılacaktır. Programın uygulanması sonucunda deney grubundaki öğrencilerin başarısındaki gelişim, kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerin başarısındaki gelişimden anlamlı derecede farklı bulunmuştur (p = .03< .05) ve deney grubundaki öğrencilerinsınıf içi tartışmalarının yoğun olduğu ve katılımın arttığı tespit edilmiştir.

Çalışmanın amacı, öğrencilere daha fazla olanak sağlayarak Matematik derslerinde tartışma ortamı yaratmak, matematiği sevdirmek, Matematik derslerine duyulan korku ve endişeyi azaltmak ve “Matematik dersinde başarılı olabilirim” düşüncesini aşılamaktır. Bu proje kapsamında dersler için bir tartışma kültürü yaratma programı geliştirilmiş ve uygulanmış, çocuklardan haftalık matematik dersi ile ilgili yansıtıcı düşüncelerini yazdıkları matematik günlükleri istenmiş, ayrıca başarısı düşük ve/veya istekli öğrencilere üniversite öğrencilerinden oluşan bir ekip de birebir ek ders vererek her yönden çocuklar desteklenmiştir. Projede yer alan dört araştırmacı öğretmen ortak haftalık ders planlaması yapıp, bu planları uygulayarak sonrasında ders akışı, içeriği ve sınıf yönetimi hakkında değerlendirme yapmıştır.

Except for academics and consultants, the concept and purpose of innovation (not to mention related concepts such as “Open Innovation", "Free-Intellectual Property Innovation," or "Open Source Innovation") is usually unclear for most entrepreneurs and other practitioners. It often times happens that newly coined terminology becomes misleading or may even include a certain degree of sensationalism, hence turning into a matter of debate for specialists in the realm of technology management. Such has been the case for the term “Open Innovation”, since the word “open” is mainly related to crowd sourced innovation, but not for the openness on intellectual property rights. Since innovation is about the commercialization of original ideas, so we propose a simple and visual business model setting to resolve these concepts. To this regard, the “Business Model Canvas” has been used in business and entrepreneurship to sketch and frame the key points behind the development of a startup. This model was suggested by Alexander Osterwalder (2008) in his work on Business Model Ontology, as a strategic analysis template for developing startups or documenting existing businesses. It describes the firm’s value proposition, partners, resources, activities, customer relationships, distribution channels, customers, revenue streams and cost structure. However, when it comes to innovative startups, this template does not explicitly include such significant innovation components as intellectual property, its alignment to strategies, and intellectual property flow. The present paper proposes the use of an improved version of the Business Model Canvas to originally represent different models of innovation like Open Innovation, thus providing a clear, visual and quick representation of their meaning, and consequently, contribute to a better understanding of different concepts of innovation.

This articledescribes a studymeasuringmetacognitionbymeansofthe JuniorMetacognitive Awareness Inventory developed in the USA which was then adapted to be used in Turkey. The survey data from 314 middle school students and 589 tenth grade students were collected in two phases to facilitate both the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Furthermore, the reliability analysis of the scores and convergent, discriminant, and subgroup validity coefficients were examined. Findings suggested that the inventory measures two constructs, namely, the knowledge and regulation of cognition. These results demonstrated that the Turkish version of Jr. MAI is a valid and reliable instrument which may serve as useful in guiding future research aiming to understanding students’ metacognitive awareness., Bu çalışmanın iki amacı vardır. İlki, bilişüstü yeti boyutlarını belirlemek üzere Bilişüstü Yeti Envanteri’ni Türkçeye uyarlamak, ikincisi ise envanterin geçerlik ve güvenirliğini Türk kültüründe test etmektir. Bilişüstü yeti, bireylerin kendi öğrenme yapısını algılama ve kendi öğrenme özelliklerinin farkında olma gibi zihinsel güçlerini kapsamaktadır. Çalışma, farklı sınıf düzeylerinde 314 ilköğretim öğrencisinin bilişüstü yeti puanlarının yer aldığı açımlayıcı faktör analizi ve 589 onuncu sınıf öğrencisinin bilişüstü yeti puanlarının yer aldığı doğrulayıcı faktör analizi olmak üzere iki aşamadan oluşmaktadır. Öğrencilerin bilişüstü yeti puanlarının güvenirlik analizleri yapılmış ve uyuşum, ayırtedici ve altgrup geçerlikleri incelenmiştir. Bulgular, envanterin “Bilişin Bilgisi” ve “Bilişin Düzenlemesi” olmak üzere iki boyuttan oluştuğunu göstermektedir. Bu sonuçlar envanterin, öğrencilerin bilişüstü yetilerini ölçmede geçerli ve güvenilir bir araç olduğunu kanıtlamaktadır.

Bu çalışmanın amacı portfolyo değerlendirmesinin istatistik başarısı üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Çalışma, İstanbul ili Fatih ilçesinde bulunan bir ortaokulda öğrenim görmekte olan 7. sınıf öğrencilerinin katılımıyla iki ayrı sınıfta yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada yarı deneysel desen kullanılmış ve deney grubunda 32, kontrol grubunda 32 olmak üzere toplam 64 öğrenci ile çalışılmıştır. Deney ve kontrol grubunda yer alan öğrencilerin istatistik başarısı araştırmacılar tarafından veri analizi ünitesi içeriğinde geliştirilen İstatistik Başarı Testi (İBT) ile ölçülmüş, öntest ve cinsiyet değişkenleri kontrol altında tutularak sontest puanları arasındaki değişim incelenmiştir. Uygulama 6 hafta boyunca yürütülmüştür. Uygulama boyunca veri analizi ünitesi kontrol grubunda mevcut öğretim programına göre, deney grubunda ise mevcut öğretim programına ek olarak portfolyo değerlendirmesi kullanılarak işlenmiştir. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde İlişkili Örneklemler t-testi, İlişkisiz Örneklemler t-testi, ve Çift-Faktörlü Kovaryans Analizi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçları, portfolyo değerlendirmesi kullanılan öğretimin istatistik başarısını deney grubu lehine anlamlı düzeyde etkilediğini göstermiştir.

This study examined school type differences in fifth-grade students’ fractional knowledge with data from a university-school partnership. The study investigated differences in students’ reported overall test anxiety before, during, or after test taking among two school-levels and gender. Differences among three test anxiety components (thoughts, off-task behaviors, and autonomic reactions) were also examined. Participants were 725 primary (349 females, 376 males) and 375 middle (180 females, 195 males) school students from a metropolitan city in Turkey. Turkish students’ reported overall test anxiety declined from primary to middle school, with females showing higher test anxiety throughout school years. Whereas students rated thoughts high, autonomic reactions were rated low; followed by off-task behaviors. Female and male students did not differ in thoughts and autonomic reactions. School-level differences were found in off-task behaviors and autonomic reactions. The pattern of Turkish students’ overall test anxiety derived as a combination of thoughts, off-task behaviors, and autonomic reactions was discussed, and educational implications were offered.

Utkun Aydın (MEF Author) Two studies were conducted for the development and validation of a multidimensional test to assess undergraduate students' mathematical thinking about derivative. The first study involved two phases: question generation and refinement of the Thinking-about-Derivative Test (TDT). The second study included four phases as follows: test administration, generalizability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and subgroup validity analysis. Findings suggested that the 30-item multiple-choice TDT, which comprises 6 mathematical thinking aspects, enactive, iconic, algorithmic, algebraic, formal, and axiomatic thinking, demonstrates acceptable levels of reliability and validity. Followed by additional cross-validation studies, the TDT may be a useful tool for mathematics education researchers and mathematicians. Directions for future research and implications for educational practice are discussed.
