Search

In the search for rational design strategies for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, linking the catalyst structure to activity and stability is key. However, highly active catalysts such as IrOx and RuOx undergo structural changes under OER conditions, and hence, structure-activity-stability relationships need to take into account the operando structure of the catalyst. Under the highly anodic conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), electrocatalysts are often converted into an active form. Here, we studied this activation for amorphous and crystalline ruthenium oxide using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and electrochemical scanning electron microscopy (EC-SEM). We tracked the evolution of surface oxygen species in ruthenium oxides while in parallel mapping the oxidation state of the Ru atoms to draw a complete picture of the oxidation events that lead to the OER active structure. Our data show that a large fraction of the OH groups in the oxide are deprotonated under OER conditions, leading to a highly oxidized active material. The oxidation is centered not only on the Ru atoms but also on the oxygen lattice. This oxygen lattice activation is particularly strong for amorphous RuOx. We propose that this property is key for the high activity and low stability observed for amorphous ruthenium oxide.

The development of catalysts for propylene oxide production from direct epoxidation using propylene and oxygen remains a challenge. Compared to ethylene epoxidation, where selectivity on silver catalysts is high, the low selectivity to produce propylene oxide over silver is partially attributed to the lack of electrophilic oxygen under propylene epoxidation reaction conditions. Here, we investigate how to mediate the chemical reactivity of oxygen by theory-inspired experiments for propylene epoxidation. We show how adding electrophilic-O via SO4 oxyanions to the surface of silver increases epoxide selectivity. Moreover, we show how the addition of Cl to the SO4-modified catalyst activates the oxyanion, giving a more than 4-fold increase in selectivity to propylene oxide. Finally, we explore different systems using DFT and draw a picture on how the next catalyst/co-catalyst systems should be tuned to design a catalyst with high selectivity for direct propylene oxidation.

Operando soft and hard X-ray spectroscopic techniques were used in combination with plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) simulations to rationalize the enhanced activities of Zn-containing Cu nanostructured electrocatalysts in the electrocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation reaction. We show that at a potential for CO2 hydrogenation, Zn is alloyed with Cu in the bulk of the nanoparticles with no metallic Zn segregated; at the interface, low reducible Cu(I)-O species are consumed. Additional spectroscopic features are observed, which are identified as various surface Cu(I) ligated species; these respond to the potential, revealing characteristic interfacial dynamics. Similar behavior was observed for the Fe-Cu system in its active state, confirming the general validity of this mechanism; however, the performance of this system deteriorates after successive applied cathodic potentials, as the hydrogen evolution reaction then becomes the main reaction pathway. In contrast to an active system, Cu(I)-O is now consumed at cathodic potentials and not reversibly reformed when the voltage is allowed to equilibrate at the open-circuit voltage; rather, only the oxidation to Cu(II) is observed. We show that the Cu-Zn system represents the optimal active ensembles with stabilized Cu(I)-O; DFT simulations rationalize this observation by indicating that Cu-Zn-O neighboring atoms are able to activate CO2, whereas Cu-Cu sites provide the supply of H atoms for the hydrogenation reaction. Our results demonstrate an electronic effect exerted by the heterometal, which depends on its intimate distribution within the Cu phase and confirms the general validity of these mechanistic insights for future electrocatalyst design strategies.

Advanced in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterization ofelectrochemically co-electrodeposited bi-element copper alloy electrodesshows that zinc yields the formation of a stable cationic Cu species during theelectroreduction of CO2 at high cathodic polarization. In contrast, theformation/stabilization of cationic Cu species in copper oxides, or doping Cuwith another element, like Ni, is not possible. It is found that the pure andmixed Cu:Zn electrodes behave similarly in term of electrocatalytic selectivityto multi-carbon products. At higher Zn concentrations the electrode behaveslike the pure Zn catalyst, which indicates that the Cu cationic species do nothave a significant influence on the selectivity to multi-carbon products. It isfound that in the non-monotonically distribution of products is dominated interm of surface energy in which copper prefers the surface. Otherwise, thiswork highlights the importance of in situ characterization to uncover themechanisms mediating the catalytic reactions in contrast to ex situ or postmortem analysis, which can be a source of misinterpretation.

We use ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies coupled with on-line gas detection to investigate in situ performance and interface chemistry of an electrodeposited Cu on a carbon support under conditions of CO2 reduction.

In situ NAP-XPS and XAS are used to elucidate the mechanisms of the exsolution/reoxidation process in Sr0.93Ti0.3Fe0.63Ni0.07O3−δ (STFN) perovskite, used as an electrode for intermediate temperature-SOFC.

Perovskites are interesting oxidation catalysts due to their chemical flexibility enabling the tuning of several properties. In this work, we synthesized LaFe1−xCoxO3 catalysts by co-precipitation and thermal decomposition, characterized them thoroughly and studied their 2-propanol oxidation activity under dry and wet conditions to bridge the knowledge gap between gas and liquid phase reactions. Transient tests showed a highly active, unstable low-temperature (LT) reaction channel in conversion profiles and a stable, less-active high-temperature (HT) channel. Cobalt incorporation had a positive effect on the activity. The effect of water was negative on the LT channel, whereas the HT channel activity was boosted for x > 0.15. The boost may originate from a slower deactivation rate of the Co3+ sites under wet conditions and a higher amount of hydroxide species on the surface comparing wet to dry feeds. Water addition resulted in a slower deactivation for Co-rich catalysts and higher activity in the HT channel state.

Several in situ studies have revealed spatiotemporal dynamics on heterogeneous catalysts surfaces under chemical stimuli1-4, which presumably control the activity, selectivity, and productivity5-11. However, operando validations of sufficient spacetime resolution12 are often missing, and hence, the effect of these dynamics on catalytic performance may not be entirely clear. Here, using dry reforming of methane over Ni as an example, we demonstrate the relevance of catalytic redox dynamics for reaction performance and determine their genesis from adaptive chemistry and continual catalytic cycling. By combining operando scanning electron microscopy and near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we found that activation sites for methane and carbon dioxide differed but continually transformed into each other during the reaction. This behavior enabled a self-sustained oscillating regime evincing the sequential formation of active sites. We also found that not all spatiotemporal dynamics accounted for the catalytic function. We highlight the importance of oscillating reactions for mechanistic studies and propose that the generation of mechanical strain at the catalyst during redox cycling acted as a feedback element for the oscillations. These observations lead to deeper understanding of fundamental catalysis and open new opportunities for tuning catalytic performances.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role in (photo)electrochemical devices that use renewable energy to produce synthetic fuels. Recent measurements on semiconducting oxides have found a power law dependence of the OER rate on surface hole density, suggesting a multihole mechanism. In this study, using transient photocurrent measurements, density functional theory simulations and microkinetic modelling, we have uncovered the origin of this behaviour in haematite. We show here that the OER rate has a third-order dependence on the surface hole density. We propose a mechanism wherein the reaction proceeds by accumulating oxidizing equivalents through a sequence of one-electron oxidations of surface hydroxy groups. The key O–O bond formation step occurs by the dissociative chemisorption of a hydroxide ion involving three oxyl sites. At variance with the case of metallic oxides, the activation energy of this step is weakly dependent on the surface hole coverage, leading to the observed power law.

Potential spikes during the start-up and shutdown of fuel cells are a major cause of platinum electrocatalyst degradation, which limits the lifetime of the device. The electrochemical oxidation of platinum (Pt) that occurs on the cathode during the potential spikes plays a key role in this degradation process. However, the composition of the oxide species formed as well as their role in catalyst dissolution remains unclear. In this study, we employ a special arrangement of XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), in which the platinum electrocatalyst is covered by a graphene spectroscopy window, making the in situ examination of the oxidation/reduction reaction under wet conditions possible. We use this assembly to investigate the change in the oxidation states of Pt within the potential window relevant to fuel cell operation. We show that above 1.1 VRHE (potential vs reversible hydrogen electrode), a mixed Ptδ+/Pt2+/Pt4+ surface oxide is formed, with an average oxidation state that gradually increases as the potential is increased. By comparing a model based on the XPS data to the oxidation charge measured during potential spikes, we show that our description of Pt oxidation is also valid during the transient conditions of fuel cell start-up and shutdown. This is due to the rapid Pt oxidation kinetics during the pulses. As a result of the irreversibility of Pt oxidation, some remnants of oxidized Pt remain at typical fuel cell operating potentials after a pulse.

Detrimental to the performance of solid oxide cells (SOCs) is the interface between electrolyte and each electrode: for purely electron-conducting electrodes, it is part of the triple phase boundary where the reactions take place, and for mixed ionic and electronic conductor (MIEC) electrodes, the oxygen ions coming from or moving into the electrolyte are transported through this phase boundary. As such, the performance of SOFCs and SOECs is strongly dependent on the chemical nature of this interface. By combining state-of-the-art electron microscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we were able to obtain an atomically resolved picture of the interface between yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, with 8 mol% Y2O3) and lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM, (La0.8Sr0.2)0.95MnO3-δ).[1] Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy measurements in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) reveal the presence of a significant amount of inter-diffusion between YSZ and LSM. Only strontium does not show any diffusion into YSZ, resulting in a shift of its intensity distribution profile of approximately 0.8 nm with respect to all other elements. All this is in agreement with Monte-Carlo-based simulations that were used to theoretically model the YSZ/LSM boundary including the ion- as well as site-specific swapping probabilities for the diffusion process.[1] According to these simulations, this diffusion region is slightly amorphous. By means of atomically resolved scanning TEM (STEM), this reduction of long-range order was observed experimentally for an approximately 1.5 nm wide slab on the YSZ side of the boundary, clearly distinguishing it from the bulk fluorite structure. In materials science, distinct ‘2D-like’ layers at grain boundaries and interfaces are often referred to as ’complexions’. While these can in general occur in different types, depending on thickness and retained order,[2] they are all characterized by a self-limited (finite) width and thermodynamic stability obtained only by confinement in between two bulk phases (i.e. they cannot exist on their own without neighboring phases).[2] These complexions have recently also been discovered in other energy-related systems such as battery materials.[3] The presence of such a stable complexion might be the reason why the YSZ/LSM interface is not as prone to the formation of lanthanum or strontium zirconates as other perovskites such as lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF).[4] Consequently, it might have significant influence on the chemical stability of such SOCs and a thorough understanding of the complexions between electrolyte and electrode may in the future allow fine tuning of SOC performance and stability. This requires the determination of electrochemical and thermodynamic properties of these interface complexions for which we will, in a next step, employ theoretical simulations and experimental techniques in order to find out how different transport phenomena, widths and stabilities of the layers behave with temperature, time and chemical environment. Creating active and stable electrodes is an essential step toward efficient and durable electrolyzers. To achieve this goal, understanding what aspects of the electrode structure dictate activity and catalyst dissolution is key. Here, we investigate these aspects by studying trends in the activity, stability, and operando structure of iridium oxides during the oxygen evolution reaction. Using operando X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we determined the near-surface structure of oxides ranging from amorphous to crystalline during the reaction. We show that applying oxygen evolution potentials universally yields deprotonated μ2-O moieties and a μ1-O/μ1-OH mixture, with universal deprotonation energetics but in different amounts. This quantitative difference mainly results from variations in deprotonation depth: surface deprotonation for crystalline IrO2 versus near-surface deprotonation for semicrystalline and amorphous IrOx. We argue that both surface deprotonation and subsurface deprotonation modify the barrier for the oxygen evolution and Ir dissolution reactions, thus playing an important role in catalyst performance.

Nitrogen-doped carbons (NC) are a class of sustainable materials for selective CO2 adsorption. We introduce a versatile concept to fabricate flexible NC-based sensor architectures for room-temperature sensing of CO2 in a one-step laser conversion of primary coatings cast from abundant precursors. By the unidirectional energy impact in conjunction with depth-dependent attenuation of the laser beam, a layered sensor heterostructure with porous transducer and active sensor layer is formed. Comprehensive microscopic and spectroscopic cross-sectional analyses confirm the preservation of a high content of imidazolic nitrogen in the sensor. The performance was optimized in terms of material morphology, chemical composition, and surface chemistry to achieve a linear relative resistive response of up to ∆R/R0 = -14.3% (10% of CO2). Thermodynamic analysis yields ΔadsH values of -35.6 kJ·mol-1 and 34.1 kJ·mol 1 for H2O and CO2, respectively. The sensor is operable even in humid environments (e.g., ∆R/R0,RH=80% = 0.53%) and shows good performance upon strong mechanical deformation.

The electrochemical promotion of the C2H4 + O2 total oxidation reaction over a Pt catalyst, interfaced to yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ), has been studied at 0.25 mbar and T = 650 K using near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) as an in situ method. The electrochemical promoter effect is linked to the presence of a several layers thick graphitic overlayer that forms on the Pt surface in the presence of C2H4. Our NAP-XPS investigation reveals that electrochemical pumping of the Pt/YSZ catalyst, using a positive potential, leads to the spillover of oxygen surface species from the YSZ support onto the surface of the Pt electrode. Based on the XP spectra, the spillover species on Pt is identical to oxygen chemisorbed from the gas-phase.

The operation of these approaches is exemplified and compared using the oxygen evolution reaction on IrOx catalysts. We found that all the approaches, if properly applied, provide similar information about surface oxygen speciation. However, using resonant photoemission spectroscopy, we were able to prove that speciation is more involved and complex than previously thought during the oxygen evolution reaction on IrOx based electrocatalysts. We found that the electrified solid–liquid interface is composed of different oxygen species, where the terminal oxygen atoms on iridium are the active species, yielding the formation of peroxo species and, finally, dioxygen as the reaction product. Thus, the oxygen–oxygen bond formation is dominated by peroxo species formation along the reaction pathway. Furthermore, the methodologies discussed here open up opportunities to investigate electrified solid–liquid interfaces in a multitude of electrochemical processes with unprecedented speciation capabilities, which are not accessible by one-dimensional X-ray spectroscopies.

Revealing the active nature of oxide derived copper (OD-Cu) is of key importance to understand its remarkable catalytic performance during the cathodic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce valuable hydrocarbons. Using advanced spectroscopy, electron microscopy and electro active surface area characterization techniques, the electronic structure and the changes in the morphology/roughness of thermally oxidized copper thin films were revealed during CO2RR. For this purpose we developed an in situ cell for X-ray spectroscopy able to be operated accurately in the presence of gases or liquids to unite the role of the initial thermal oxide-phase and its active phase during the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. It was found that the Cu(I) species formed during the thermal treatment are readily reduced to Cu0 during the CO2RR, whereas Cu(II) species are hardly reduced. In addition, Cu(II) oxide electrode dissolution was found to yield a porous/void structure, where the lack of electrical connection between isolated islands prohibits the CO2RR. Therefore, the active/stable phase for CO2RR is metallic copper, independent of its initial phase, with a significant change in its morphology upon its reduction yielding the formation of a rougher surface with higher number of under coordinated sites. Thus, the initial thermal oxidation of copper in air controls the reaction activity/selectivity due to the changes induced in electrode surface morphology/roughness and the presence of more under coordinated sites during the CO2RR.

The variation in the morphology and electronic structure of copper during the electroreduction of CO2 into valuable hydrocarbons and alcohols was revealed by combining in situ surface- and bulk-sensitive X-ray spectroscopies with electrochemical scanning electron microscopy. These experiments proved that the electrified interface surface and near-surface are dominated by reduced copper. The selectivity to the formation of the key C–C bond is enhanced at higher cathodic potentials as a consequence of increased copper metallicity. In addition, the reduction of the copper oxide electrode and oxygen loss in the lattice reconstructs the electrode to yield a rougher surface with more uncoordinated sites, which controls the dissociation barrier of water and CO2. Thus, according to these results, copper oxide species can only be stabilized kinetically under CO2 reduction reaction conditions.

With its high stability and well-tuned binding strength for adsorbates, platinum is an excellent catalyst for a wide range of reactions. In applications like car exhaust purification, the oxidation of hydrocarbons, and fuel cells, platinum is exposed to highly oxidizing conditions, which often leads to the formation of surface oxides. To reveal the structure of these surface oxides, the oxidation of Pt in O2 has been widely studied. However, in most applications, H2O is also an important or even dominant part of the reaction mixture. Here, we investigate the interaction of H2O with Pt surface oxides using near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find that reversible hydroxylation readily occurs in H2O/O2 mixtures. Using time-resolved measurements, we show that O–OH exchange occurs on a time scale of seconds.

Surface-sensitive ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy combined with an electrocatalytic reactivity study, multilength-scale electron microscopy, and theoretical modeling provide insights into the gas-phase selective reduction of carbon dioxide to isopropanol on a nitrogen-doped carbon-supported iron oxyhydroxide electrocatalyst. Dissolved atomic carbon forms at relevant potentials for carbon dioxide reduction from the reduction of carbon monoxide chemisorbed on the surface of the ferrihydrite-like phase. Theoretical modeling reveals that the ferrihydrite structure allows vicinal chemisorbed carbon monoxide in the appropriate geometrical arrangement for coupling. Based on our observations, we suggest a mechanism of three-carbon-atom product formation, which involves the intermediate formation of atomic carbon that undergoes hydrogenation in the presence of hydrogen cations upon cathodic polarization. This mechanism is effective only in the case of thin ferrihydrite-like nanostructures coordinated at the edge planes of the graphitic support, where nitrogen edge sites stabilize these species and lower the overpotential for the reaction. Larger ferrihydrite-like nanoparticles are ineffective for electron transport.

Investigating the interfaces between electrolytes and electrocatalysts during electrochemical water oxidation is of great importance for an understanding of the factors influencing catalytic activity and stability. Here, the interaction of a well-established, nanocrystalline and mesoporous Ca-birnessite catalyst material (initial composition K0.2Ca0.21MnO2.21·1.4H2O, initial Mn-oxidation state ∼+3.8) with an aqueous potassium phosphate buffer electrolyte at pH 7 was studied mainly by using various electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy techniques. In comparison to electrolyte solutions not containing phosphate, the investigated Ca-birnessite electrodes show especially high and stable oxygen evolution activity in phosphate buffer. During electrolysis, partial ion substitutions of Ca2+ by K+ and OH−/O2− by HnPO4(3−n)− were observed, leading to the formation of a stable, partially disordered Ca–K–Mn–HnPO4–H2O layer on the outer and the pore surfaces of the active electrocatalyst material. In this surface layer, Mn3+ ions are stabilized, which are often assumed to be of key importance for oxygen evolution catalysis. Furthermore, evidence for the formation of [Ca/PO4/H2O]− complexes located between the [MnO6] layers of the birnessite was found using the soft Ca 2p and Ca L-edge X-ray spectroscopy. A possible way to interpret the observed, obviously very favorable “special relationship” between (hydrogen)phosphates and Ca-birnessites in electrocatalytic water oxidation would be that HnPO4(3−n)− anions are incorporated into the catalyst material where they act as stabilizing units for Mn3+ highly active centers and also as “internal bases” for the protons released during the water-oxidation reaction.

Perovskites are interesting oxidation catalysts due to their chemical flexibility enabling the tuning of several properties. In this work, we synthesized LaFe

“Why?” is the question that initiates science. “Why?” is also the answer that maintains science. This interrogative adverb fuels the scientific career of Robert Schlögl. Robert is a dedicated solid-state chemist who has found his specialization in untangling the working principles of heterogeneous catalysts under realistic conditions. As such he combines the full complexity of real catalysts with tailor-made operando experiments to overcome pressure, material, and complexity gaps. His ability to quickly abstract the meaning of spectroscopic and microscopic data, his talent to ask the right question paired with curiosity, diligence, and creativity have made him a world-leading expert in heterogeneous catalysis and energy science. His scientific passion is focused on untangling chemical dynamics as well as working principles and understanding the important interplay of geometric and electronic structures in functional materials. Thereby his research interests involve ammonia and methanol synthesis, carbon materials in catalysis, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, selective oxidation, and the development of operando setups for microscopy and spectroscopy. He also has a strong commitment to society in scientifically accelerating the energy transition (“Energiewende”) in Europe, where he focuses on CO2 utilization and hydrogen as an energy carrier. This is manifested in three recent large Germany-wide projects: Carbon2Chem, CatLab, and TransHyDe.

The electronic and structural properties of Au/ZnO under industrial and idealized methanol synthesis conditions have been investigated. This was achieved by kinetic measurements in combination with time-resolved operando infrared (DRIFTS) as well as in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) measurements at the O K-edge together with high-resolution electron microscopy. The adsorption of CO during the reaction revealed the presence of negatively charged Au nanoparticles/Au sites during the initial phase of the reaction. Near-ambient-pressure XPS and XANES demonstrate the build-up of O vacancies during the reaction, which goes along with a substantial increase in the rate of methanol formation. The results are discussed in comparison with previous findings for Cu/ZnO and Au/ZnO catalysts.

Self-sustained reaction rate oscillations in the oxidation of propane and in the propane steam reforming with oxygen over nickel foil have been studied in situ by near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass-spectrometry. It was found that regular relaxation-type oscillations in both reactions proceed under similar conditions. In the former case, the peaks of CO, CO2, H2, and H2O were detected by mass-spectrometry as gas-phase products. In contrast, in the latter case, after addition of water to the reaction feed, the mass-spectrometric signal of water decreased simultaneously with the signals of O2 and C3H8, whereas the signals of CO, CO2, and H2 increased. It means that in the presence of water in the reaction feed, the propane steam reforming proceeds with a significant rate. In both cases, the oscillations arise due to spontaneous oxidation and reduction of the catalyst. According to the Ni2p and O1s core-level spectra measured in situ, the high-active catalyst surface is represented by nickel in the metallic state, and the transition to the low-active state is accompanied by the growth of a NiO film on the catalyst surface. The oscillations in the gas phase are accompanied by oscillations in the catalyst temperature, which reflects proceeding endothermic and exothermic processes. An oscillatory mechanism, which can be common for oxidative catalytic reactions over transitional metals, is discussed.

In situ x-ray spectroscopies offer a powerful way to understand the electronic structure of the electrode–electrolyte interface under operating conditions. However, most x-ray techniques require vacuum, making it necessary to design spectro-electrochemical cells with a delicate interface to the wet electrochemical environment. The design of the cell often dictates what measurements can be done and which electrochemical processes can be studied. Hence, it is important to pick the right spectro-electrochemical cell for the process of interest. To facilitate this choice, and to highlight the challenges in cell design, we critically review four recent, successful cell designs. Using several case studies, we investigate the opportunities and limitations that arise in practical experiments.

In this study, the dependence of the catalytic activity of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG)-supported bimetallic Pd-Au catalysts towards the CO oxidation based on the Pd/Au atomic ratio was investigated. The activities of two model catalysts differing from each other in the initial Pd/Au atomic ratios appeared as distinctly different in terms of their ignition temperatures. More specifically, the PdAu-2 sample with a lower Pd/Au surface ratio (~0.75) was already active at temperatures less than 150 °C, while the PdAu-1 sample with a higher Pd/Au surface ratio (~1.0) became active only at temperatures above 200 °C. NAP XPS revealed that the exposure of the catalysts to a reaction mixture at RT induces the palladium surface segregation accompanied by an enrichment of the near-surface regions of the two-component Pd-Au alloy nanoparticles with Pd due to adsorption of CO on palladium atoms. The segregation extent depends on the initial Pd/Au surface ratio. The difference in activity between these two catalysts is determined by the presence or higher concentration of specific active Pd sites on the surface of bimetallic particles, i.e., by the ensemble effect. Upon cooling the sample down to room temperature, the reverse redistribution of the atomic composition within near-surface regions occurs, which switches the catalyst back into inactive state. This observation strongly suggests that the optimum active sites emerge under reaction conditions exclusively, involving both high temperature and a reactive atmosphere.

Three-dimensional topological insulators are exotic materials with unique properties. Tetradymite type binary chalcogenides of bismuth and antimony, as well as their mixed crystals, belong to prototypical TIs. Potential device applications of these materials require in-depth knowledge of their stability in the ambient atmosphere and other media maintained during their processing. Here we investigated the reactivity of mixed crystals with anion substitution, Bi2(Se1-xTex)3 and Sb2(Se1-xTex)3, towards molecular oxygen using both in situ and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that, in contrast to cation substitution, partial substitution of tellurium by selenium atoms leads to anomalously high surface reactivity, which even exceeds that of the most reactive binary constituent. We attribute this effect to anion ordering that essentially modifies the bond geometry, especially the respective bond angles as modeled by DFT.

Iridium and its oxides/hydroxides are the best candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction under harsh acidic conditions owing to the low overpotential and the high corrosion resistance observed for Ir-based anodes. Herein, by means of cutting edge operando surface and bulk sensitive X-ray spectroscopy techniques, specifically designed electrode nano-fabrication and ab initio DFT calculations, we were able to reveal the electronic structure of the active IrOx centers (i.e. oxidation state) during electrocatalytic oxidation of water in the surface and bulk of high-performance Ir-based catalysts. We found the oxygen evolution reaction is controlled by the formation of empty Ir 5d states in the surface ascribed to the formation of formally IrV species leading to the appearance of electron-deficient oxygen species bound to single iridium atoms (µ1-O and µ1-OH) that are responsible for water activation and oxidation, due to the bound oxygen’s transformation into an oxyl susceptible to nucleophilic attack water. Oxygen bound to three iridium centers (µ3-O) remains the dominant species in the bulk but do not participate directly in the electrocatalytic reaction, suggesting bulk oxidation is limited. In addition a high coverage of a µ1-OO (peroxo) species during the OER is excluded. Moreover, we provide the first photoelectron spectroscopic evidence in bulk electrolyte that the higher surface to bulk ratio in thinner electrodes enhances the material usage involving the precipitation of a significant part of the electrode surface and near-surface active species.

The “Seven Pillars” of oxidation catalysis proposed by Robert K. Grasselli represent an early example of phenomenological descriptors in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Major advances in the theoretical description of catalytic reactions have been achieved in recent years and new catalysts are predicted today by using computational methods. To tackle the immense complexity of high-performance systems in reactions where selectivity is a major issue, analysis of scientific data by artificial intelligence and data science provides new opportunities for achieving improved understanding. Modern data analytics require data of highest quality and sufficient diversity. Existing data, however, frequently do not comply with these constraints. Therefore, new concepts of data generation and management are needed. Herein we present a basic approach in defining best practice procedures of measuring consistent data sets in heterogeneous catalysis using “handbooks”. Selective oxidation of short-chain alkanes over mixed metal oxide catalysts was selected as an example.

Electrocatalysts accelerate the reaction by facilitating the required electron transfer, as well as the formation and rupture of chemical bonds. This involvement in fundamentally different processes results in complex electrochemical kinetics that can be challenging to understand and control, and that typically depends exponentially on overpotential. Such behaviour emerges when the applied bias drives the reaction in line with the phenomenological Butler���Volmer theory, which focuses on electron transfer, enabling the use of Tafel analysis to gain mechanistic insight under quasi-equilibrium or steady-state assumptions. However, the charging of catalyst surfaces under bias also affects bond formation and rupture, the effect of which on the electrocatalytic rate is not accounted for by the phenomenological Tafel analysis and is often unknown. Here we report pulse voltammetry and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on iridium oxide to show that the applied bias does not act directly on the reaction coordinate, but affects the electrocatalytically generated current through charge accumulation in the catalyst. We find that the activation free energy decreases linearly with the amount of oxidative charge stored, and show that this relationship underlies electrocatalytic performance and can be evaluated using measurement and computation. Electrochemistry is a promising building block for the global transition to a sustainable energy market. Particularly the electroreduction of CO2 and the electrolysis of water might be strategic elements for chemical energy conversion. The reactions of interest are inner-sphere reactions, which occur on the surface of the electrode, and the biased interface between the electrode surface and the electrolyte is of central importance to the reactivity of an electrode. However, a potential-dependent observation of this buried interface is challenging, which slows the development of catalyst materials. Here we describe a sample architecture using a graphene blanket that allows surface sensitive studies of biased electrochemical interfaces. At the examples of near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), we show that the combination of a graphene blanket and a permeable membrane leads to the formation of a liquid thin film between them. This liquid thin film is stable against a water partial pressure below 1 mbar. These properties of the sample assembly extend the study of solid–liquid interfaces to highly surface sensitive techniques, such as electron spectroscopy/microscopy. In fact, photoelectrons with an effective attenuation length of only 10 Å can be detected, which is close to the absolute minimum possible in aqueous solutions. The in-situ cells and the sample preparation necessary to employ our method are comparatively simple. Transferring this approach to other surface sensitive measurement techniques should therefore be straightforward. We see our approach as a starting point for more studies on electrochemical interfaces and surface processes under applied potential. Such studies would be of high value for the rational design of electrocatalysts.

CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by using a colloidal one-pot synthesis method based on the decomposition of metal acetylacetonates in the presence of oleyl amine. The characterization by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and N2 physisorption revealed non-porous spinel phase CoFe2O4 NPs with an average particle size of 4 nm. The unsupported metal oxide NPs were applied in the selective oxidation of 2-propanol in a continuously operated fixed-bed reactor under quasi steady-state conditions using a heating rate of 0.5 k min-1. 2-Propanol was found to be oxidatively dehydrogenated over CoFe2O4 yielding acetone and H2O with high selectivity. Only to a minor extent dehydration to propene and total oxidation to CO2 was observed at higher temperatures. The detected low-temperature reaction pathway with maxima at 430 and 510 K was inhibited after the initial 2-propanol oxidation up to 573 K, but an oxidative treatment in O2 or N2O atmosphere led to full regeneration. No correlation between the desorbing amount or the surface oxygen species investigated by O2 temperature-programmed desorption experiments and the low-temperature activity was observed. The amounts of evolving CO2 during the TPO experiments indicate deactivation due to formation of carbonaceous species. Inhibition experiments with pre-adsorbed reaction intermediates and infrared spectroscopy identified acetate species as reversible poison, whereas carbonates are rather spectators. In addition, carbon deposition was detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which also revealed a minor influence of cobalt reduction during the deactivation process as confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies.

The activation of iron oxide Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) catalysts was investigated during pretreatment: reduction in hydrogen followed by carburization in either CO or syngas mixture, or simultaneously reduction and carburization in syngas. A combination of different complementary in situ techniques was used to gain insight into the behavior of Fe-based FTS catalysts during activation. In situ XRD was used to identify the crystalline structures present during both reduction in hydrogen and carburization. An increase in reduction rate was established when increasing the temperature. A complete reduction was demonstrated in the ETEM and a grain size dependency was proven, i.e. bigger grains need higher temperature in order to reduce. XPS and XAS both indicate the formation of a small amount of carbonaceous species at the surface of the bulk metallic iron during carburization.

Operando X-ray Photoelectron and Absorption Spectroscopy (XPS and XAS) using soft (up to 2 KeV) and tender (2–10 KeV) X-rays applied to study functional materials for energy conversion has gone through great development in the last years and several approaches to different cell designs combined with instrumentation development now allow successful characterization of electrode-electrolyte interfaces under working conditions. An overview of the current state and challenges are presented along with an outlook into the direction that future development should take, which we expect would allow us to expand and complete our understanding of the liquid-solid electrochemical interfaces.

According to a recently proposed mechanism, the silver-catalyzed industrial synthesis of ethylene oxide (EO) involves adsorbed SO4. The O atoms that are added to the ethylene molecules to give EO originate from SO4, which may solve the long-standing question about the active oxygen species in this reaction. Here, we report a low-energy electron diffraction structure analysis of an ordered phase of SO4 on the Ag(111) surface, forming a (7 × √3)rect structure and containing the oxygen species that before had been spectroscopically identified on the active catalyst. Using I(V) data from a low-energy electron microscope and an input model from density functional theory, the complex structure could be solved. It contains SO4 moieties on a reconstructed Ag(111) surface in which all four O atoms bind to Ag atoms. In the proposed ethylene epoxide reaction model, the structure represents the parent phase from which the active SO4 phase is formed by a lifting of the reconstruction.

Owing to its extraordinary high activity for catalysing the oxygen exchange reaction, strontium doped LaCoO3 (LSC) is one of the most promising materials for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. However, under SOFC operating conditions this material suffers from performance degradation. This loss of electrochemical activity has been extensively studied in the past and an accumulation of strontium at the LSC surface has been shown to be responsible for most of the degradation effects. The present study sheds further light onto LSC surface changes also occurring under SOFC operating conditions. In-situ near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were conducted at temperatures between 400 and 790 °C. Simultaneously, electrochemical impedance measurements were performed to characterise the catalytic activity of the LSC electrode surface for O2 reduction. This combination allowed a correlation of the loss in electro-catalytic activity with the appearance of an additional La-containing Sr-oxide species at the LSC surface. This additional Sr-oxide species preferentially covers electrochemically active Co sites at the surface, and thus very effectively decreases the oxygen exchange performance of LSC. Formation of precipitates, in contrast, was found to play a less important role for the electrochemical degradation of LSC. We show atomic oxygen on an unreconstructed Ag(110) surface has a O 1s binding energy ≤ 528 eV and its stable at low coverages. Our findings point to the idea of multiple selective oxygen species in ethylene epoxidation on Ag., The nature of the oxygen species active in ethylene epoxidation is a long-standing question. While the structure of the oxygen species that participates in total oxidation (nucleophilic oxygen) is known the atomic structure of the selective species (electrophilic oxygen) is still debated. Here, we use both in situ and UHV X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to study the interaction of oxygen with a silver surface. We show experimental evidence that the unreconstructed adsorbed atomic oxygen (Oads) often argued to be active in epoxidation has a binding energy (BE) ≤ 528 eV, showing a core-level shift to lower BE with respect to the O-reconstructions, as previously predicted by DFT. Thus, contrary to the frequent assignment, adsorbed atomic oxygen cannot account for the electrophilic oxygen species with an O 1s BE of 530–531 eV, thought to be the active species in ethylene epoxidation. Moreover, we show that Oads is present at very low O-coverages during in situ XPS measurements and that it can be obtained at slightly higher coverages in UHV at low temperature. DFT calculations support that only low coverages of Oads are stable. The highly reactive species is titrated by background gases even at low temperature in UHV conditions. Our findings suggest that at least two different species could participate in the partial oxidation of ethylene on silver.

Understanding the atomic-scale mechanistic details of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains an unresolved challenge in electrochemistry owing to the complexity of the OER. In this short review we discuss how, with the advent of new experimental and computational methodologies, the OER can be treated with increasingly sophisticated models to aid in our complete understanding. For the case of steady state catalyst surfaces, we define a six-rung ladder of complexity to frame how far this understanding reaches and in which aspects our understanding could still improve.
