2. Effects of host nutrition on the host-parasite interactions of Schistocephalus solidus infections in sticklebacks

Abstract

Dietary factors - including the quantity or quality of the food ingested - potentially impact the outcome of host-parasite interactions, through a variety of mechanisms. In this project, host nutritional content is manipulated qualitative and quantitatively, and the influence on host and parasites are examined. The consequences of either quantitative changes in food intake or qualitative changes in diet (i.e. type of food) may potentially benefit the host fish or parasites. The first part of the thesis results (Chapters 3 and 4) documents experiments conducted to evaluate the effect of food type, dietary protein content and ration on host-parasite interactions, focusing on the health, growth and development of fish, and the growth rate of Schistocephalus solidus plerocercoids in experimentally infected three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus. The results of these studies indicate that the level of dietary protein had a significant effect on the performance of both infected and non-infected fish in the study and suggest that dietary protein plays an important role in determining the emergent phenotypes of infected fish. The level of host alimentation (i.e. ration) also played an important role in determining fish health indices and suggests that the availability of food might have a significant effect on the performance of both infected and non-infected fish in parasitized populations. The second part of this thesis (Chapter 5) therefore investigated the effect of infection on the preferences of sticklebacks for a certain type of diet; (Artemia, bloodworm and Artificial diet). The results of this showed that S. solidus infection reduces the proportion of time spent in the Artemia zone. In addition, behavioural studies showed that sticklebacks tend to prefer bloodworm as their first choice of food. The third part of this thesis (Chapter 6) therefore investigates the effect of a dietary supplement - carotenoids on host-parasite interactions in sticklebacks. Carotenoids appeared to influence three-spined sticklebacks' investment in splenosomatic index and haematocrit. Female reproductive investment was also influenced by these dietary supplements. S. solidus-infected sticklebacks showed a significant increase in their splenosomatic index. This research has demonstrated that the influence of factors such as variation in nutritional composition, level of feeding and additive nutrients in diet have a significant effect on the performance of both infected and non-infected fish in the study.

3. Effect of Different Dietary Protein Levels on Survival Rate and Growth Per-formance of Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the growth response of guppy Poecilia reticulata to different dietary protein levels. A total of 72 fry of guppy fish of an initial body weight 0.365± 0.01g were distributed randomly into 60 L aquaria at the density rate of 0.05 g/L. Fish were fed to satiation twice daily for eight weeks with diets containing different dietary protein levels (20%, 30%, or 40%.). The survival rate of guppy was unaffected by increasing dietary protein levels. At the end of the experiment, weight gains (g) ranging from 1.93 to 3.55 were obtained corresponding to 20% and 40% crude protein respectively. The growth performance and feeding efficiencies were significantly improved (P < 0.05) by increasing dietary protein levels. However, no significant difference (P > 0.05) was observed in the specific growth rate of fish that were fed 20% and 30% dietary protein levels. The value of the condition factor was significantly high in fish fed at 40% dietary protein. It can be concluded that a 40% dietary protein level is recommended for guppy fish.

4. Inter-cell interference coordination for critical users in cellular networks

Abstract

In current day modern multicell networks, inter-cell interference (ICI) poses a major obstacle to achieving the required high data rates and limits the performance of mobile users with the cell-edge and heavily shadowed users, i. e. , critical users, being the worst affected. The main objective of this thesis is to address and analyse the multicell networks main problem: the ICI effect on the critical users’ performance. By offering to reduce, mitigate, avoid or even exploit the interference and through user grouping methods, this thesis presents various ICI coordination (ICIC) techniques to improve the performance of critical users, as a primary target, while maintaining the overall system performance, as a secondary target. Limited cooperation techniques are developed to exploit the ICI with reduced backhaul capacity needs. Systems with limited cooperation correspond to two class systems where critical users operate under a cooperative scheme and non-critical users operate under a non-cooperative scheme. The limited cooperation approach has been thoroughly investigated under two autonomous considerations: static and dynamic resource division and user grouping. Various transmission schemes, resource division, resource allocation and user grouping approaches are given offering reduced complexity, tractable and flexible solutions. It is concluded that full cooperation is not required to maximise the overall performance. In addition, with affordable loss in total throughput, the fairness and the performance of the critical users can significantly be enhanced while cooperation is active for only a small portion of total users. Interference-aware resource allocation approaches, that require much less backhaul capacity, are also investigated to mitigate the effect of ICI with much reduced complexity. Two ICIC techniques are proposed. At first, a low complexity heuristic approach is taken in which the base stations seek to limit the ICI power affecting critical users. The second technique assumes a noncooperative power control game approach with pricing in which a penalty is imposed for the ICI caused and this penalty is priced according to the users’ performance metrics. Both techniques have improved the performance of the critical users while securing good performance standards for all other users. In order to place the formerly examined scenarios into an analytical scope, information-theoretic analyses of the per-sector sum rates for multiple linear and nonlinear transmission schemes are established. A modified Wyner model is proposed and a closed form approximation for the multicell joint processing is derived. Moreover, a selective transmission approach is explored to exploit the randomness of time-varying channels.

Abstract

The present study was performed using tissue culture technique purpose of knowing the effect of using precursors in the presence of TDZ semi–cytokinin and maltos sugar on the cardiac glycosides constituents shoots of Digitalis purpurea digitoxin, gitoxin and digoxin, in this study , shoot tips were taken from seedlings of Digitalis purpurea ( var . Excelsior Mixed ) with 1 cm lenth , then they were cultured on nutrient medium adding with two kind of precursorres digitoxigenin (Dg) and gitoxigenin (Gg) with the concentrations 0.0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/L for each one, as well as adding for all the treatments ,the TDZ with the 0.5 mg/L concentration and the maltose sugar with the 30 gm/L concentration for induction the multiplication shoot tips processe . The results showed that this study and after 45 day of starting the culture, the treatment which contained digitoxigenin precursors in the concentration 0.5 mg/L was the best compared of the other treatment in respect to the characteristics studied.In this treatment, the multiplication shoots have given sum dry with the amount weight of 6.52 gm containing gitoxin, ditoxin, digoxin with the amount of 382.48, 192.18 and 203.58 g/gm dry weight respectively, beoide the inceased amount of dry weight and cardiac glycosides , other characteristics component of the shoots was increased as the containing of total chlorophyll and percent ratio of soluted sugar and starch in the amount 4.81 mg/g fresh weight, 5.59% and 8.56% respectively. Abstract

Problems caused by residual organics in treated water include the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP) following reaction with chlorine and being a substrate for microbial regrowth in the drinking water distribution system. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can only be partially removed by conventional treatment process i.e. coagulation by Al- and Fe-based salts. In the present study, the performance of titanium trichloride (TiCl3) as a coagulant for surface water treatment was studied and compared with conventionally used aluminum sulfate (alum). Jar test experiments were performed at various coagulant doses and pH levels to determine the optimum conditions based on removal efficiencies of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The zeta potential values were analysed for assessing the destabilisation mechanism of DOM flocs. The TiCl3 showed a significantly higher capacity for DOC removal at pH around 3 at which charge neutralization was found to be the dominant mechanism for the floc formation. This was further evident from the relatively larger floc sizes obtained with TiCl3 treatment. However, destabilization of Ti-flocs occurred at pH 4.5 through an adsorption-enmeshment mechanism due to a highly negative zeta potential. Additionally, fluorescence spectroscopic analyses showed that TiCl3 was more efficient than alum in removing humic compounds. A two-stage treatment process by alum and TiCl3, either as the same chemical or both showed better performance than a single dose treatment. The results indicate that TiCl3 could be an effective alternative coagulant for the treatment of waters, particularly those of low alkalinity and high DOC concentration and low pH wastewaters for removal of hydrophobic compounds and particulate matter.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the mixing process downstream of a forced mixer using a two-component laser-Doppler velocimetry system. Results show three regions of vortex development in the mixing region. Secondary motion was first produced by the mixer lobes, then counterrotating vortices around the shear layer region were formed. Finally, the vortices broke down resulting to an increase in turbulent mixing. Turbulent mixing was found to be an essential factor in obtaining a homogenously mixed flow.

Abstract

We report a new case of a patient suffering from chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and treated with interferon-alpha2a (IFN-alpha) who presented with the diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis. Interferon was stopped and appropriate treatment with antituberculous drugs initiated. Several weeks later the patient was free of clinical symptoms. Our case demonstrates a rare association between interferon and tuberculosis since only one case in the literature has described a similar association.

Abstract

PURPOSE: Three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) vessel wall volume (VWV) provides a 3D measurement of carotid artery wall remodeling and atherosclerotic plaque and is sensitive to temporal changes of carotid plaque burden. Unfortunately, although 3DUS VWV provides many advantages compared to measurements of arterial wall thickening or plaque alone, it is still not widely used in research or clinical practice because of the inordinate amount of time required to train observers and to generate 3DUS VWV measurements. In this regard, semiautomated methods for segmentation of the carotid media-adventitia boundary (MAB) and the lumen-intima boundary (LIB) would greatly improve the time to train observers and for them to generate 3DUS VWV measurements with high reproducibility. METHODS: The authors describe a 3D algorithm based on a modified sparse field level set method for segmenting the MAB and LIB of the common carotid artery (CCA) from 3DUS images. To the authors' knowledge, the proposed algorithm is the first direct 3D segmentation method, which has been validated for segmenting both the carotid MAB and the LIB from 3DUS images for the purpose of computing VWV. Initialization of the algorithm requires the observer to choose anchor points on each boundary on a set of transverse slices with a user-specified interslice distance (ISD), in which larger ISD requires fewer user interactions than smaller ISD. To address the challenges of the MAB and LIB segmentations from 3DUS images, the authors integrated regional- and boundary-based image statistics, expert initializations, and anatomically motivated boundary separation into the segmentation. The MAB is segmented by incorporating local region-based image information, image gradients, and the anchor points provided by the observer. Moreover, a local smoothness term is utilized to maintain the smooth surface of the MAB. The LIB is segmented by constraining its evolution using the already segmented surface of the MAB, in addition to the global region-based information and the anchor points. The algorithm-generated surfaces were sliced and evaluated with respect to manual segmentations on a slice-by-slice basis using 21 3DUS images. RESULTS: The authors used ISD of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 10 mm for algorithm initialization to generate segmentation results. The algorithm-generated accuracy and intraobserver variability results are comparable to the previous methods, but with fewer user interactions. For example, for the ISD of 3 mm, the algorithm yielded an average Dice coefficient of 94.4% ± 2.2% and 90.6% ± 5.0% for the MAB and LIB and the coefficient of variation of 6.8% for computing the VWV of the CCA, while requiring only 1.72 min (vs 8.3 min for manual segmentation) for a 3DUS image. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed 3D semiautomated segmentation algorithm yielded high-accuracy and high-repeatability, while reducing the expert interaction required for initializing the algorithm than the previous 2D methods.
