Abstract

In future mobile networks, the evolution of optical transport architectures enabling the flexible, scalable interconnection of Baseband Units (BBUs) and Radio Units (RUs) with heterogeneous interfaces is a significant issue. In this paper, we propose a multi‐technology hybrid transport architecture that comprises both analog and digital‐Radio over Fiber (RoF) mobile network segments relying on a dynamically reconfigurable optical switching node. As a step forward, the integration of the discussed network layout into an existing mobile infrastructure is demonstrated, enabling the support of real‐world services through both standard digital and Analog–Intermediate‐ Frequency over Fiber (A‐IFoF)‐based converged fiber–wireless paths. Emphasis has been placed on the implementation of a real‐time A‐IFoF transceiver that is employed through a single embedded fully programmable gateway array (FPGA)‐based platform that serves as an Ethernet to Intermediate Frequency (IF) bridge for the transmission of legacy traffic over the analog network segment. The experimental evaluation of the proposed concept was based on the dynamic optical routing of the legacy Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI), 1.5 GBaud analog‐intermediate frequency‐over-fiber (A‐IFoF)/mmWave and 10 Gbps binary optical waveforms, showing acceptable error vector magnitude (EVM) values for the complex radio waveforms and error‐free operation for binary optical streams, with Bit Error Rate (BER) values less than 10−9. Finally, the end‐to‐end proof‐of‐concept demonstration of the proposed solution was achieved through the delivery of 4K video streaming and Internet Protocol (IP) calls over a mobile core network. © 2022 by the authors. Abstract

5G advances the wireless communications by providing a significant improvement to the data rate, capability of connected devices and data volumes compared to the previous generations. While these advantages combine along with a wider range of applications to merit the end-user, the technologies to be used are not specified. Considering this problem and in order to efficiently support the 5G deployment researchers and engineers turned their attention on FPGA base band architectures that keep the implementation cost relatively low and at the same time they are reprogramable to provide solutions to the emerging requirements and their consequent modifications. Aiming at the contribution to the 5G technologies the current paper introduces the design of a base band DSP architecture that targets the required real time performance. Moreover, the proposed architecture is scalable by efficiently parallelizing and/or pipelining the corresponding data paths. The paper presents the pilot FPGA designs of the IFFT/FFT and Sampling Frequency Offset (SFO) functions that achieve a 500 Msps performance on a RF-SoC Xilinx ZCU111 board. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Abstract

The NEPHELE hybrid electro-optical datacenter network (DCN) architecture is proposed as a dynamic network solution to provide high capacity, scalability, and cost efficiency in comparison to the existing DCN infrastructures. The details of the NEPHELE DCN architecture and its various key parts are introduced, and the performance of its implementation is evaluated through an end-to-end NEPHELE demonstrator, which was built at the National Technical University of Athens. Several communication scenarios are demonstrated in real time, exploiting a scalable optical data-plane architecture with a software-defined network (SDN) control plane capable of slotted operation for dynamic allocation of network resources. Real-time end-to-end functionality and integration of various software and hardware components are verified in a six-host prototype datacenter cluster. © 2020 by the authors.

Abstract

The ever-increasing demands in traffic fueled by bandwidth hungry applications are pushing data centers to their limits challenging the capacity and scalability of currently established transceiver and switching technologies in data center interconnection (DCI) networks. Coherent optics emerged as a promising solution for inter-DCIs offering unprecedented capacities closer to data centers and relaxing the power budget restrictions of the link. QAMeleon, an EU funded R and D project, is developing a new generation of faster and greener sliceable bandwidth-variable electro-optical transceivers and WSS switches able to handle up to 128 Gbaud optical signals carrying flexible M-QAM constellations and novel modulation techniques. A summary of the progress on the QAMeleon transponder and Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) concepts is presented in this paper.

Abstract

The soaring traffic demands in datacenter networks (DCNs) are outpacing progresses in CMOS technology, challenging the bandwidth and energy scalability of currently established technologies. Optical switching is gaining traction as a promising path for sustaining the explosive growth of DCNs; however, its practical deployment necessitates extensive modifications to the network architecture and operation, tailored to the technological particularities of optical switches (i.e. no buffering, limitations in radix size and speed). European project NEPHELE is developing an optical network infrastructure that leverages optical switching within a software-defined networking (SDN) framework to overcome the bandwidth and energy scaling challenges of datacenter networks. An experimental validation of the NEPHELE data plane is reported based on commercial off-the-shelf optical components controlled by FPGA boards. To facilitate dynamic allocation of the network resources and perform collision-free routing in a lossless network environment, slotted operation is employed (i.e. using time-division multiple-access - TDMA). Error-free operation of the NEPHELE data plane is verified for 200 mu s slots in various scenarios that involve communication between Ethernet hosts connected to custom-designed top-of-rack (ToR) switches, located in the same or in different datacenter pods. Control of the slotted data plane is obtained through an SDN framework comprising an OpenDaylight controller with appropriate add-ons. Communication between servers in the optical-ToR is demonstrated with various routing scenarios, concerning communication between hosts located in the same rack or in different racks, within the same or different datacenter pods. Error-free operation is confirmed for all evaluated scenarios, underpinning the feasibility of the NEPHELE architecture.

Abstract

We demonstrate the hybrid integration of a multi-format tunable transmitter and a coherent optical receiver based on optical polymers and InP electronics and photonics for next generation metro and core optical networks. The transmitter comprises an array of two InP Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with 42 GHz bandwidth and two passive PolyBoards at the back- and front-end of the device. The back-end PolyBoard integrates an InP gain chip, a Bragg grating and a phase section on the polymer substrate capable of 22 nm wavelength tunability inside the C-band and optical waveguides that guide the light to the inputs of the two InP MZMs. The front-end PolyBoard provides the optical waveguides for combing the In-phase and Quadrature-phase modulated signals via an integrated thermo-optic phase shifter for applying the pi/2 phase-shift at the lower arm and a 3-dB optical coupler at the output. Two InP-double heterojunction bipolar transistor (InP-DHBT) 3-bit power digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are hybridly integrated at either side of the MZM array chip in order to drive the IQ transmitter with QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM encoded signals. The coherent receiver is based on the other side on a PolyBoard, which integrates an InP gain chip and a monolithic Bragg grating for the formation of the local oscillator laser, and a monolithic 90° optical hybrid. This PolyBoard is further integrated with a 4-fold InP photodiode array chip with more than 80 GHz bandwidth and two high-speed InP-DHBT transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) with automatic gain control. The transmitter and the receiver have been experimentally evaluated at 25Gbaud over 100 km for mQAM modulation showing bit-error-rate (BER) performance performance below FEC limit.
