To investigate patterns of gender-based performance gaps, we conducted a meta-analysis of published studies and unpublished data collected across 169 undergraduate biology and chemistry courses. While we did not detect an overall gender gap in performance, heterogeneity analyses suggested further analysis was warranted, so we investigated whether attributes of the learning environment impacted performance disparities on the basis of gender. Several factors moderated performance differences, including class size, assessment type, and pedagogy. Specifically, we found evidence that larger classes, reliance on exams, and undisrupted, traditional lecture were associated with lower grades for women. We discuss our results in the context of natural science courses and conclude by making recommendations for instructional practices and future research to promote gender equity.

Wolbachiais a genus of intracellular alpha-Proteobacteria that is maternally inherited and is capable of inducing a variety of reproductive alterations in host species. The host range ofWolbachiais not determined completely but is known to contain a number of arthropod taxa, including crustaceans.Wolbachiahas not been reported in crayfish, but sampling has been limited to date. We examine a species of crayfish,Procambarus clarkii, forWolbachiainfection using a suite ofWolbachia-specific primers in PCR assays. All specimens yielded negative results forWolbachiainfection and mathematical analysis of sample size shows a near 100% probability of detection for populations with greater than 0.1% infection rate.

Stable isotope analysis (SIA) has proven to be a useful tool in reconstructing diets, characterizing trophic relationships, elucidating patterns of resource allocation, and constructing food webs. Consequently, the number of studies using SIA in trophic ecology has increased exponentially over the past decade. Several subdisciplines have developed, including isotope mixing models, incorporation dynamics models, lipid-extraction and correction methods, isotopic routing models, and compound-specific isotopic analysis. As with all tools, there are limitations to SIA. Chief among these are multiple sources of variation in isotopic signatures, unequal taxonomic and ecosystem coverage, over-reliance on literature values for key parameters, lack of canonical models, untested or unrealistic assumptions, low predictive power, and a paucity of experimental studies. We anticipate progress in SIA resulting from standardization of methods and models, calibration of model parameters through experimentation, and continued development of several recent approaches such as isotopic routing models and compound-specific isotopic analysis.

We ask whether the observed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) population subdivision of Drosophila simulans is indicative of organismal structure or of specific processes acting on the mitochondrial genome. Factors either intrinsic or extrinsic to the host genome may influence the evolutionary dynamics of mtDNA. Potential intrinsic factors include adaptation of the mitochondrial genome and of nucleomitochondrial gene complexes specific to the local environment. An extrinsic force that has been shown to influence mtDNA evolution in invertebrates is the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia. Evidence presented in this study suggests that mtDNA is not a good indicator of organismal subdivision in D. simulans. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that Wolbachia causes any reduction in nuclear gene flow in this species. The observed differentiation in mtDNA is not corroborated by data from NADH: ubiquinone reductase 75kD subunit precursor or the Alcohol dehydrogenase-related loci, from the shape or size of the male genital arch, or from assortative premating behavior. We discuss these results in relation to a mitochondrial genetic species concept and the potential for Wolbachia-induced incompatibility to be a mechanism of speciation in insects. We conclude with an iterated appeal to include phylogenetic and statistical tests of neutrality as a supplement to phylogenetic and population genetic analyses when using mtDNA as an evolutionary marker.

Selection experiments with Drosophila have revealed constraints on the simultaneous evolution of life history traits. However, the responses to selection reported by different research groups have not been consistent. Two possible reasons for these inconsistencies are (i) that different groups used different environments for their experiments and (ii) that the selection environments were not identical to the assay environments in which the life history traits were measured. We tested for the effect of the assay environment in life history experiments by measuring a set of Drosophila selection lines in laboratories working on life history evolution with Drosophila in Basel, Groningen, Irvine and London. The lines measured came from selection experiments from each of these laboratories. In each assay environment, we measured fecundity, longevity, development time and body size. The results show that fecundity measurements were particularly sensitive to the assay environment. Differences between assay and selection environment in the same laboratory or differences between assay environments between laboratories could have contributed to the differences in the published results. The other traits measured were less sensitive to the assay environment. However, for all traits there were cases where the measurements in one laboratory suggested that selection had an effect on the trait, whereas in other laboratories no such conclusion would have been drawn. Moreover, we provide good evidence for local adaptation in early fecundity for lines from two laboratories.

We investigated the cellular basis of two extensive, continuous, latitudinal, genetic, body size clines of Drosophila melanogaster by measuring wing area and cell size in the wing blade of adult flies reared under standard, laboratory conditions. We report that the contribution of cell size to an Australian cline is much smaller than that to a South American cline. The data suggest that neither cell size nor cell number were the targets of selection, but rather wing area itself, or a trait closely related to it. We hypothesize that the differences between the continents were caused by differences in the initial pattern of genetic variation for the cell traits and/or by the direction of selection on the source populations of the clines. Despite large differences between continents in the cellular basis of the latitudinal variation, multiple regression analysis, using the individual variation within populations, showed that the relationship between cell size and cell number was changed with latitude in the same way in the two clines. The relative contribution of cell number to wing area variation increased with latitude, probably because of compensatory interactions with cell size as a consequence of the latitudinal increase in cell number. Our findings are discussed in relation to the cellular basis of evolutionary change in laboratory thermal selection lines and natural populations along latitudinal clines.

Wolbachia , a bacterial endosymbiont of diverse arthropods, affects its host's reproduction and so is consequential for its host's fitness. In the fruit fly Drosophila simulans, Wolbachia increases embryonic mortality in crosses of infected males with uninfected females, possibly by manipulating the proteins of the host gametes. Preliminary data suggests these proteins include at least two families of heat-shock proteins, Hsp70 and Hsp90. Drosophila larvae live within necrotic fruit, in which larvae can experience thermal stress that induces Hsp expression. Infected male D. simulans , if exposed to laboratory heat shock as larvae, father more viable offspring than unexposed controls. Also, infected male D. simulans , if allowed to copulate beforehand, father more viable offspring than virgin controls of identical age. These two mechanisms of restoring the reproductive compatibility of Wolbachia -infected Drosophila could affect the fitness of wild D. simulans ; we are attempting to document these effects through modelling and experimental study of natural populations and their thermal environment. This research program exemplifies how evolutionary physiology may extend far beyond the classical disciplinary boundaries of physiology and evolutionary biology.

In dipterans, the wing-beat frequency, and, hence, the lift generated, increases linearly with ambient temperature. If flight performance is an important target of natural selection, higher wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio should be favored at low temperatures because they increase the lift for a given body weight. We investigated this hypothesis by examining wing: thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio in Drosophila melanogaster collected from wild populations along a latitudinal gradient and in their descendants reared under standard laboratory conditions. In a subset of lines, we also studied the phenotypic plasticity of these traits in response to temperature. To examine whether the latitudinal trends in wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio could have resulted from a correlated response to latitudinal selection on wing area, we investigated the correlated responses of these characters in lines artificially selected for wing area. In both the geographic and the artificially selected lines, wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio decreased in response to increasing temperature during development. Phenotypic plasticity for either trait did not vary among latitudinal lines or selective regimes. Wing:thorax size ratio and wing-aspect ratio increased significantly with latitude in field-collected flies. The cline in wing:thorax size ratio had a genetic component, but the cline in wing-aspect ratio did not. Artificial selection for increased wing area led to a statistically insignificant correlated increase in wing:thorax size ratio and a decrease in wing-aspect ratio. Our observations are consistent with the hypotheses that high wing-thorax size ratio and wing aspect ratio are per se selectively advantageous at low temperatures.

The duration of Drosophila melanogaster larval and pupal periods was measured in laboratory thermal lines and in populations collected along a latitudinal transect in eastern Australia. In replicated laboratory lines kept for 9 years at 16.5 degrees C or 25 degrees C the duration of larval development had continued to diverge compared with 4 and 5 years previously, with more rapid larval development, and hence reduced total duration of pre-adult development, in the low temperature lines at both experimental temperatures. After 4 years of separate evolution, lines derived from the 25 degrees C lines and subsequently cultured at 29 degrees C showed no evidence of significant divergence in the duration of any part of the pre-adult period. The geographic populations showed a decrease in the duration of larval development, and hence of the total pre-adult period, with increasing latitude. In both laboratory and field populations, evolution at lower temperature was associated with more rapid larval development to a larger adult body size, the opposite genetic correlation between these traits to that found within a single temperature. The indications are that lower temperatures may be permissive of more efficient growth in D. melanogaster. It will be important to discover if evolution in response to temperature induces similar correlations in other ectotherms.

Reproductive isolation and morphological differences among allopatric populations of the Holarctic species Drosophila testacea v. Roser indicate that this taxon is actually a complex of three morphocryptic species: D. testacea , from Europe and continental Asia; D. orientacea , n.sp., from Japan; and D. neotestacea , n.sp., from North America. Diagnostically important morphological variation is presented, along with distributional data for these three species and D. putrida Sturtevant, the only other member of the testacea species group. Both pre- and postmating barriers to reproduction were observed in various interspecific crosses. Premating isolation is strongly asymmetric between D. testacea and D. neotestacea . Modes of postmating isolation include lack of sperm transfer and failure of hybrid eggs to hatch. The revised taxonomy of this group should facilitate analyses of interesting aspects of the evolutionary ecology of these species.

The aim of this study was to examine the latitudinal variation in preadult competitive ability of Drosophila melanogaster. Two pairs of populations from Queensland and Tasmania, Australia, were examined. Queensland flies are genetically smaller and develop more slowly than the Tasmanian flies. Survival and body size of flies raised at different temperatures and densities were compared when larvae were challenged with a common competitor. No latitudinal variation in larval survival was detected. Body size (measured as wing length) decreased with increasing temperature and larval density. Flies from the Tasmanian populations were more sensitive to the effects of temperature and density and to the joint effect of increased temperature and density. This could explain the evolution of greater growth efficiency and larger body size at lower temperatures.

Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell. However, research linking intraspecific differences in organismal fitness with genotypic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation has been hampered by the lack of variation in experimentally tractable species. This study examines whether fly lines harbouring three distinct Drosophila simulans mtDNA types (siI, -II and -III) exhibit differential fitness in laboratory perturbation cages. Comparison of the pre-perturbation and post-perturbation data shows that both the mtDNA and mitonuclear interactions have a significant and repeatable effect on the frequency of flies with specific genotypes in population cages (siII > -III > -I) and that coadapted mitonuclear interactions are greatest in the siI type. The rank order of mtDNA frequency correlates with the observed worldwide distribution of the haplogroups while mitonuclear interactions are most significant in the siI haplogroup that is likely to have been subject to repeated population bottlenecks. One possible explanation for the maintenance of the least fit siI haplogroup on Pacific islands is that it is protected from extinction by Wolbachia infection.

The bacterial symbiont Wolbachia can cause cytoplasmic incompatibility in Drosophila simulans flies: if an infected male mates with an uninfected female, or a female with a different strain of Wolbachia, there can be a dramatic reduction in the number of viable eggs produced. Here we explore the dynamics associated with double and single Wolbachia infections in New Caledonia. Doubly infected females were compatible with all males in the population, explaining the high proportion of doubly infected flies. In this study, males that carry only wHa or wNo infections showed reduced incompatibility when mated to uninfected females, compared with previous reports. These data suggest that either the DNA of these bacterial isolates have diverged from those previously collected, or the genetic background of the host has lead to a reduction in the phenotype of incompatibility. Mitochondrial sequence polymorphism at two sites within the host genome was assayed to investigate population structure related to infection types. There was no correlation between sequence polymorphism and infection type suggesting that double infections are the stable type, with singly infected and uninfected flies arising from stochastic segregation of bacterial strains. Finally, we discuss the nomenclature of Wolbachia strain designation.

The aim of this study is to examine the expression of cytoplasmic incompatibility and investigate the distribution and population frequencies of Wolbachia pipientis strains in Drosophila simulans. Nucleotide sequence data from 16S rDNA and a Wolbachia surface protein coding sequence and cytoplasmic incompatibility assays identify four distinct Wolbachia strains: wHa, wRi, wMa, and wAu. The levels of cytoplasmic incompatibility between six lines carrying these strains of bacteria and three control lines without bacteria are characterized. Flies infected with wHa and wRi are bidirectionally incompatible, and males that carry either strain can only successfully produce normal numbers of offspring with females carrying the same bacterial strain. Males infected with wAu do not express incompatibility. Males infected with the wMa strain express intermediate incompatibility when mated to females with no bacteria and no incompatibility with females with any other Wolbachia strain. We conduct polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism assays to distinguish the strain of Wolbachia and the mitochondrial haplotype to survey populations for each type and associations between them. Drosophila simulans is known to have three major mitochondrial haplotypes (siI, sill, and siIII) and two subtypes (siIIA and siIIB). All infected lines of the sil haplotype carry wHa, wNo, or both; wMa and wNo are closely related and it is not clear whether they are distinct strains or variants of the same strain. Infected lines with the silIA haplotype harbor wRi and the siIIB haplotype carries wAu. The wMa infection is found in siIII haplotype lines. The phenotypic expression of cytoplasmic incompatibility and its relation to between-population differences in frequencies of Wolbachia infection are discussed.

We examined 20 Drosophila melanogaster populations collected from a 2600-km north-south transect in Australia. In laboratory culture at constant temperature and standard larval density, a genetic cline in thorax length and wing area was found, with both traits increasing with latitude. The cline in wing area was based on clines in both cell size and cell number, but was primarily determined by changes in cell number. Body size and larval development time were not associated among populations. We discuss our results in the context of selection processes operating in natural and experimental populations.

We document the occurrence of "sex ratio" meiotic drive in natural populations of Drosophila testacea. "Sex ratio" males sire greater than 95% female offspring. Genetic analysis reveals that this effect is due to a meiotically driven X chromosome, as in other species of Drosophila in which "sex ratio" has been found. In contrast to other drosophilids, the "sex ratio" and standard chromosomes of D. testacea do not differ in gene arrangement, implying that the effect may be due to a single genetic factor in this species. In all likelihood, the "sex ratio" condition has evolved independently in D. testacea and in the Drosophila obscura species group, as the loci responsible for the effect occur on different chromosomal elements. An important ecological consequence of "sex ratio" is that natural populations of D. testacea exhibit a strong female bias. Because D. testacea mates, oviposits, and feeds as adults and larvae on mushrooms, this species provides an excellent opportunity to study the selective factors in nature that prevent "sex ratio" chromosomes from increasing to fixation and causing the extinction of the species.

SUMMARY (1) Intraspecific aggregation has been postulated to facilitate the coexistence of competing species that share patchy resources. Data on adult emergence numbers of four mycophagous species of Drosophila from field-collected mushrooms show that these species exhibit highly aggregated distributions, both in collections comprising several naturally occurring species of mushrooms and in those of a single species for which mushroom size, condition, exposure time, and location in the field were controlled. (2) The relation between the mean and the variance in the numbers of flies emerging per mushroom reveals that the mean level of larval crowding increases with overall population density. Aggregation of larvae of each species is due to (i) females laying eggs in clutches of more than one egg, and (ii) non-random distributions of ovipositing females across breeding sites. (3) The emergence number of different species of Drosophila tend to be positively correlated across mushrooms, especially between species belonging to the same species group. In fact, within species groups, intraspecific and interspecific aggregation of ovipositing females contribute about equally to the proportional increase in the number of competitors an individual larva shares a mushroom with. Thus, aggregation does not appear to play an important-role in the coexistence of species belonging to the same species group. (4) The probability of parasitism of emergent Drosophila by the nematode Howardula aoronymphium Welch is generally independent of emergence numbers. Thus, although density-dependent parasitism could promote coexistence of species that have independent aggregated distributions, we find little evidence of such density dependence in these species.

Field-collected Drosophila melanogaster from 19 populations in Eastern Australia were measured for body size traits, and the measurements were compared with similar ones on flies from the same populations reared under standard laboratory conditions. Wild caught flies were smaller, and latitudinal trends in size were greater. Reduced size was caused by fewer cells in the wing, and the steeper cline by greater variation in cell area. The reduction in size in field-collected flies may therefore have been caused by reduced nutrition, and the steeper cline may have been caused by an environmental response to latitudinal variation in temperature. No evidence was found for evolution of size traits in response to laboratory culture. The magnitude of phenotypic plasticity in response to temperature of development time, body size, cell size and cell number was examined for six of the populations, to test for latitudinal variation in plasticity. All characters were plastic in response to temperature. Total development time showed no significant latitudinal variation in plasticity, although larval development time showed a marginally significant effect, with most latitudinal variation at intermediate rearing temperatures. Neither thorax length nor wing size and its cellular components showed significant latitudinal variation in plasticity.
