Astrophysics - Abstract
We present UBVRI light curves for the bright Type Ia supernovae SN 1990N in NGC 4639 and SN 1991T in NGC 4527 based on photometry gathered in the course of the Calan/Tololo supernova program. Both objects have well-sampled light curves starting several days before maximum light and spanning well through the exponential tail. These data supercede the preliminary photometry published by Leibundgut et al (1991) and Phillips et al (1992). The host galaxies for these supernovae have (or will have) accurate distances based on the Cepheid period-luminosity relationship. The photometric data in this paper provide template curves for the study of general population of Type Ia supernova and accurate photometric indices needed for the Cepheid-supernova distance scale., Comment: AAS LaTeX, 30 pages, 10 figures, to appear in the Jan 1998 Astronomical Journal. Astrophysics - Abstract
The Calan/Tololo supernova survey has discovered ~30 Type Ia supernovae out to z~0.1. Using BVI data for these objects and nearby SNe Ia, we have shown that there exists a significant dispersion in the intrinsic luminosities of these objects. We have devised a robust chisquare minimization technique simultaneously fitting the BVI light curves to parametrize the SN event as a function of (tb,m, m15(B)) where tb is the time of B maximum, m is the peak BVI magnitude corrected for luminosity variations, and m15(B) is a single parameter describing the whole light curve morphology. When properly corrected for m15(B), SNe Ia prove to be high precision distance indicators, yielding relative distances with errors 7-10%. The corrected peak magnitudes are used to construct BVI Hubble diagrams (HD), and with Cepheid distances recently measured with the HST to four nearby SNe Ia (37C, 72E, 81B, 90N) we derive a value of the Hubble constant of 63.1+/-3.4 (internal) km/s/Mpc. This value is ~10-15% larger than the value obtained by assuming that SNe Ia are perfect standard candles. As we have shown in Paper V, there is now strong evidence that galaxies with younger stellar population appear to host the slowest-declining, and therefore most luminous SNe Ia. Hence, the use of Pop I objects such as Cepheids to calibrate the zero point of the SNe Ia HD can easily bias the results toward luminous SNe Ia, unless the absolute magnitude-decline relation is taken into account., Comment: 32 pages, figures attached, all tables available, to appear in the Astronomical Journal

Astrophysics - Abstract
We examine the absolute luminosities of 29 SNe Ia in the Calan/Tololo survey. We confirm a relation between the peak luminosity of the SNe and the decline rate as measured by the light curve, as suggested by Phillips (1993). We derive linear slopes to this magnitude-decline rate relation in BV(I)kc colors, using a sample with Bmax-Vmax < 0.2 mag. The scatter around this linear relation (and thus the ability to measure SNe Ia distances) ranges from 0.13 mag (in the I band) to 0.17 mag (in the B band). We also find evidence for significant correlations between the absolute magnitudes or the decline rate of the light curve, and the morphological type of the host galaxy., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the Astronomical Journal

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present a family of six BVI template light curves for SNe Ia for days -5 and +80, based on high-quality data gathered at CTIO. These templates display a wide range of light curve morphologies, with initial decline rates of their B light curves between m15(B)=0.87 mag and 1.93 mag. We use these templates to study the general morphology of SNe Ia light curves. We find that several of the main features of the BVI templates correlate tightly with m15(B). In particular, the V light curves, which are probably a reasonably good approximation of the bolometric light curves, display an orderly progression in shapes between the most-luminous, slowest-declining events and the least-luminous, fastest-declining SNe. This supports the idea that the observed spectroscopic and photometric sequences of SNe Ia are due primarily to one parameter. Nevertheless, SNe with very similar initial decline rates do show significant differences in their light curve properties when examined in detail, suggesting the influence of one or more secondary parameters., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures, to appear in the Astronomical Journal

BACKGROUND: The cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor evacetrapib substantially raises the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level, reduces the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level, and enhances cellular cholesterol efflux capacity. We sought to determine the effect of evacetrapib on major adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with high-risk vascular disease. METHODS: In a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial, we enrolled 12,092 patients who had at least one of the following conditions: an acute coronary syndrome within the previous 30 to 365 days, cerebrovascular atherosclerotic disease, peripheral vascular arterial disease, or diabetes mellitus with coronary artery disease. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either evacetrapib at a dose of 130 mg or matching placebo, administered daily, in addition to standard medical therapy. The primary efficacy end point was the first occurrence of any component of the composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina. RESULTS: At 3 months, a 31.1% decrease in the mean LDL cholesterol level was observed with evacetrapib versus a 6.0% increase with placebo, and a 133.2% increase in the mean HDL cholesterol level was seen with evacetrapib versus a 1.6% increase with placebo. After 1363 of the planned 1670 primary end-point events had occurred, the data and safety monitoring board recommended that the trial be terminated early because of a lack of efficacy. After a median of 26 months of evacetrapib or placebo, a primary end-point event occurred in 12.9% of the patients in the evacetrapib group and in 12.8% of those in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 1.01; 95% confidence interval, 0.91 to 1.11; P=0.91). CONCLUSIONS: Although the cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor evacetrapib had favorable effects on established lipid biomarkers, treatment with evacetrapib did not result in a lower rate of cardiovascular events than placebo among patients with high-risk vascular disease. In this paper, two procedures are described to identify the optimal damping element locations in variable geometry trusses and to improve their behavior when dynamic loads are applied. In simple structures subjected to well-identified actions, obtaining an optimal location for damping elements can be relatively easy. However, as the geometry of the structures becomes more complex, the number of elements increases, and the frequency range of external actions is wider, finding the optimal location of dampers along the system becomes a difficult task. Furthermore, if the structure varies its geometry in successive positions, such as folding, unfolding, or any other movement, another level of complexity is added to the problem. The two procedures presented in this paper are based on calculating the effectiveness indices obtained from the derivatives of the eigenfrequencies of the dynamic eigenproblem with regard to parameters like stiffness or damping.

Universities are key institutions to respond to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN "2030 Agenda". Although some initiatives have emerged to respond to this challenge, more university actions and initiatives have to be taken. This research is a case study based on the approach mentioned. A teaching experience at university level has been developed in the Library and Information Science area to link the Service Learning (SL) methodology with an innovative teaching approach focused on the SDGs to improve librarians, archivists and information professionals training.

The aim of the present paper is to set forth a method for the optimum synthesis of planar mechanisms. The method in question can be applied in the case of any mechanism and kinematic synthesis (function, path generation, rigid-body guidance, or combination of these). The mechanisms are discretized with bar-finite elements that facilitate the computation of the geometric matrix, which is a stiffness matrix. The error function is based on the elastic energy accumulated by the mechanism when it is compelled to fulfill exactly the synthesis data. Thus during the iterative process the elements of the mechanism may be considered deformable. The energy computation for each synthesis datum requires the solution of the nonlinear equilibrium position. This problem is solved with the help of the geometric matrix and the force vector of the deformed system. The minimization of the error function is based on Newton's method, with a semianalytic approach. Analytic and finite-difference concepts are used together in the calculation of the gradient vector and of the second-derivative matrix. The method has proved very stable for a wide range of step sizes. There is convergence to a minimum even when the start mechanism is far from a solution. Examples with different mechanisms and syntheses are also provided.

- Abstract
This study presents an analysis of the European projects of preservation and digitisation of the cultural heritage that, as an example of good practices, have been the origin of the declaration of orphan works. For this purpose, the public information available in the records of the Orphan Works Database of the Observatory of the Intellectual Property Office of the European Union (EUIPO) is established as the primary source for the identification of projects. First, the data of the 2, 041 records exported from the database are analysed and normalized. Next, different rankings and indicators are established. Finally, the 43 projects identified are presented and a qualitative and descriptive analysis is realized, based on the consultation of the public information available online and the contacts established with some of those responsible.

- Abstract
Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) have recently emerged as a significant cause of bovine mastitis worldwide. Here we describe the isolation of MRCoNS from cases of bovine mastitis from a single dairy farm in Australia. Fourteen CoNS isolates were identified as MRCoNS on the basis of having an oxacillin MIC of =0.5 µg/mL. The isolates were speciated as S. chromogenes (n = 1) S. fleurettii (n = 1), S. haemolyticus (n = 2), S. sciuri (n = 5), S. simulans (n = 1) S. succinus (n = 2) and S. xylosus (n = 2). Five of the isolates (S. fleuretti, S. haemolyticus S. sciuri and two S. succinus) were mecA-positive. We also detected a previously described S. sciuri mecA homolog in four oxacillin-resistant S. sciuri isolates. The remainder of the putative MRCoNS did not contain any mecA-related resistance determinants in their genomes. Comparative genomic analysis of three previously published S. sciuri isolates, from humans, a squirrel and a cereal crop (rice), and a representative isolate from our study demonstrated clustering and a high degree of genetic homogeneity (>95%), suggesting S. sciuri has low host specificity. In conclusion, CoNS, in particular S. sciuri, may act as a reservoir for SCCmec elements that can easily be spread between different host species by direct cross-infection.

Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Vorapaxar is a new oral protease-activated-receptor 1 (PAR-1) antagonist that inhibits thrombin-induced platelet activation. METHODS: In this multinational, double-blind, randomized trial, we compared vorapaxar with placebo in 12,944 patients who had acute coronary syndromes without ST-segment elevation. The primary end point was a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, stroke, recurrent ischemia with rehospitalization, or urgent coronary revascularization. RESULTS: Follow-up in the trial was terminated early after a safety review. After a median follow-up of 502 days (interquartile range, 349 to 667), the primary end point occurred in 1031 of 6473 patients receiving vorapaxar versus 1102 of 6471 patients receiving placebo (Kaplan-Meier 2-year rate, 18.5% vs. 19.9%; hazard ratio, 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85 to 1.01; P=0.07). A composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or stroke occurred in 822 patients in the vorapaxar group versus 910 in the placebo group (14.7% and 16.4%, respectively; hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.81 to 0.98; P=0.02). Rates of moderate and severe bleeding were 7.2% in the vorapaxar group and 5.2% in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.58; P
