We report a new type of fossil margin galls arranged in a linear series on dicot leaf impressions from the latest Neogene (Pliocene) sediments of the Chotanagpur Plateau, Jharkhand, eastern India. We collected ca. 1500 impression and compression leaf fossils, of which 1080 samples bear arthropod damage referable to 37 different damage types (DT) in the ‘GuidetoInsect(andOther)DamageTypesinCompressedPlantFossils’. A few leaf samples identified as Ipomoea L. (Convolvulaceae) have specific margin galls that do not match any galling DT previously described. This type of galling is characterized by small, linearly arranged, irregular, sessile, sub-globose, solitary, indehiscent, solid pouch-galls with irregular ostioles. The probable damage inducers of the present galling of the foliar margin might be members of Eriophyidae (Acari). The new type of gall suggests that marginal gall-inducing mites on leaves of Ipomoea did not change their host preference at the genus level since the Pliocene. The development of marginal leaf galling in Ipomoea is linked to extrafloral nectaries that do not offer protection against arthropod galling but indirectly protect the plant against herbivory from large mammals.

International audience; Natural and semi-natural grasslands, particularly dry grasslands, are high-value biodiversity hotspots in Europe and major challenges for ecological conservation and restoration. Soil transfer has been used successfully to restore dry grassland ecosystems (soil and vegetation), but should only be applied as a last resort and where an undegraded ecosystem has previously independently been earmarked for destruction. Assessing overall restoration success means taking soil recovery into account as well as vegetation regeneration. In Mediterranean regions and under global warming, soil hydrodynamic properties are the most critical limiting factors for the restoration of dry ecosystems. This study analyses soil physico-chemical parameters and hydrodynamic properties in reconstructed soils after soil transfer following a petrol land spill. Six years after soil transfer and compared to the surrounding soil reference steppe, the horizons of the soil transfer treatments were significantly less colonised by plant roots and showed very few biological activities and earthworm galleries. Then, their porosity was also significantly lower. Hydrodynamic properties continue to differ significantly between the restored site and the surrounding reference steppe ecosystem. There is also less available soil water and water drains faster in all soil transfer treatments. This can be explained by significant higher finer grain size (clays, silt), chemical elements (N, P, K), and plant cover for soil transfer treatments but significant, lower levels of organic matterdue to mechanical soil compaction during soil spreading. The soil transfer treatment involving full reconstitution of the three main soil layers yields the most encouraging results. However, the question arises of whether long-term vegetation recovery might be compromised by soil hydrological dysfunction under global warming.

The scarcity of high-resolution palaeoclimate records from the interior of West Asia has limited our understanding of the mechanisms of past climate change and their potential impacts on early human societies of the Eastern Fertile Crescent. Here, we present a multiproxy sedimentological, geochemical and palynological record from the Hashilan Wetland in the central Zagros Mountains, spanning the time interval from 22 to 2.2 kcal bp. Our results indicate a cold, dry climate for the last deglaciation (22 to 10 kcal bp) with amplified aridity during the Last Glacial Maximum, Heinrich Stadial 1, the Younger Dryas and the 8.2 and 3.2 ka events. The Early Holocene (11.6 to 7.8 kcal bp) is characterised by prolonged dry summers, frequent spring/summer dust storms and restricted oak woodlands that gradually expanded as summers shortened toward the second half of the Holocene (

The Lateglacial (14,700–11,700 cal BP) is a key climate period marked by rapid but contrasted changes in the Northern Hemisphere. Indeed, regional climate differences have been evidenced during the Lateglacial in Europe and the Northern Mediterranean areas. However, past climate patterns are still debated since temperature and precipitation changes are poorly investigated towards the lower European latitudes. Lake Matese in Southern Italy is a key site in the Central Mediterranean to investigate climate patterns during the Lateglacial. This study uses a multi-proxy approach including magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry (XRF core scanning), pollen data and molecular biomarkers like branched Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers (brGDGTs) to reconstruct climate changes and their impacts at Matese. Palaeotemperatures and -precipitation patterns are quantitatively inferred from pollen assemblages (multi-method approach: Modern Analogue Technique, Weighted Averaging Partial Least Squares regression, Random Forest, and Boosted Regression Trees) and brGDGTs calibrations. The results are compared to a latitudinal selection of regional climate reconstructions in Italy to better understand climate processes in Europe and in the circum-Mediterranean region. A warm Bølling–Allerød and a marked cold Younger Dryas are revealed in all climate reconstructions inferred from various proxies (chironomids, ostracods, speleothems, pollen, brGDGTs), showing no latitudinal differences in terms of temperatures across Italy. During the Bølling–Allerød, no significant changes in terms of precipitation are recorded, however, a contrasted pattern is visible during the Younger Dryas. Slightly wet conditions are recorded south of latitude 42° N whereas dry conditions are recorded north of latitude 42° N. During the Younger Dryas, cold conditions can be attributed to the southward position of North Atlantic sea-ice and of the Polar Frontal JetStream whereas the increase of precipitation is Southern Italy seems to be linked to relocation of Atlantic storm tracks into the Mediterranean, induced by the Fennoscandian ice sheet and the North European Plain. On the contrary, during the Bølling–Allerød warm conditions can be linked to the northward position of North Atlantic sea-ice and of the Polar Frontal JetStream.

International audience; Pesticides exert important effects on the soil fauna and health. However, little is known about the interactions of soil, microorganisms and earthworms in the presence of pesticides and about their respective roles in the soil biological activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the soil type on enzyme activities, measured in bulk soil and in casts of two earthworm species, after exposure to the organophosphorus pesticide parathion. To this aim, two endogeic earthworm species (Apporectodea caliginosa and Allolobophora chlorotica) were cross-acclimated in two different soil textures (each representing the most favorable soil environment for that spe-cies). Enzyme activities were measured as a soil quality indicator in samples of bulk soil (collected at day 4 and day 7 of exposure to parathion) and in earthworm casts (collected at day 7). A short exposure (4 days) to parathion significantly (ANOVA, p < 0.001) inhibited carboxylesterases (25-43 % of inhibition) and alkaline phosphatase (-23 % of inhibition). At day 7 of exposure, parathion impact on the overall soil enzyme activities mainly depended on the soil texture. Indeed, activity inhibition was higher (ANOVA, p < 0.001) in silt-clay soil (decrease by 37 %) than in silt-loamy soil (decrease by-18 %). Conversely, parathion effect was not influenced by earthworm presence/absence and earthworm species. However, after soil exposure to parathion, earthworms (both species) improved enzyme activity restoration in their casts.

International audience; Photodegradation can play a key role in litter decomposition under the context of climate change which hinders organic matter turnover because of available water scarcity. Here, we aimed at testing the effect of a two-month sunlight exposure with different radiation intensities (either in winter or summer) on the chemical signature of two typical Mediterranean species, i.e., Quercus ilex and Q. pubescens. We also tested whether the side of the leaf exposed mattered in the chemical modification observed. To do so, two holistic chemical approaches, FTIR-ATR (Fourier transform infraredattenuated total reflectance) and solid-state NMR of 13C, were used. ANOVA from solid-state NMR of 13C revealed that after exposure in summer, certain markers of lignin (phenol and aromatics) decreased in leaves whatever the Quercus spp. and it depended on the side of the leaf exposed. Lignin transformation thus occurred via dearomatization and/or dephenolization. Moreover, for both species, when leaves were exposed at their topside, their NMR chemical signatures were negatively correlated with alkyl assigned to cutin and waxes, showing that the thin layer of cuticle was attacked by photodegradation. FTIR-ATR spectra and NMR data also highlighted that a weaker irradiation (winter vs summer exposure) strongly limited lignin content decrease. Finally, lignin, cutin and wax oxidation, by enhancing the availability of polysaccharides from lignocellulose, may favor further litter transformation when suitable climate conditions (mainly humidity) are recovered.

International audience; In the context of global warming, a clear understanding of microrefugia—microsites enabling the survival of species populations outside their main range limits—is crucial. Several studies have identified forcing factors that are thought to favor the existence of microrefugia. However, there is a lack of evidence to conclude whether, and to what extent, the climate encountered within existing microrefugia differs from the surrounding climate. To investigate this, we adopt a “bottom-up” approach, linking marginal disconnected populations to microclimate. We used the southernmost disconnected and abyssal populations of the circumboreal herbaceous plant Oxalis acetosella in Southern France to study whether populations in sites matching the definition of “microrefugia” occur in particularly favorable climatic conditions compared to neighboring control plots located at distances of between 50 to 100 m. Temperatures were recorded in putative microrefugia and in neighboring plots for approximately 2 years to quantify their thermal offsets. Vascular plant inventories were carried out to test whether plant communities also reflect microclimatic offsets. We found that current microclimatic dynamics are genuinely at stake in microrefugia. Microrefugia climates are systematically colder compared to those found in neighboring control plots. This pattern was more noticeable during the summer months. Abyssal populations showed stronger offsets compared to neighboring plots than the putative microrefugia occurring at higher altitudes. Plant communities demonstrate this strong spatial climatic variability, even at such a microscale approach, as species compositions systematically differed between the two plots, with species more adapted to colder and moister conditions in microrefugia compared to the surrounding area

International audience; Nectar is a key resource for numerous insects. Despite its importance, nectar productivity has mainly been assessed using one sampling method, in which the volume of nectar produced by a flower is measured after 24 h of isolation from insects (‘measured 24 h volume’ hereafter). This method assumes that nectar removal by flower-visiting insects does not affect nectar productivity. Hence, a linearity in the nectar production dynamic is assumed. The effect of nectar removal could lead to an actual volume of nectar produced per flower over 24 h being higher or lower than the measured 24 h volume. Whether the nectar productivity is influenced by insect activity still therefore needs to be assessed. In a field experiment, we estimated the nectar production dynamics of lavender (Lavandula hybrida) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) flowers and tested whether they met the linearity assumption. Then, we developed a simulation model to identify how different scenarios of insect foraging activity: nectar removal rate (average and maximum), and flower-selection strategies (random selection or rewarding flower selection) alter the estimated 24 h volume of nectar for both crops (‘estimated 24 h volume’ hereafter). Finally, we tested whether the estimated 24 h volume differed from the measured 24 h volume for both crops. Lavender and fennel showed equal measured 24 h volume of nectar but the produced nectar volume over 6 h suggested that a flower of lavender was more productive than a flower of fennel. Both nectar production dynamics did not meet the assumption of linearity. The simulation models showed that the estimated 24 h volume increased with maximum nectar removal rate for lavender, and the opposite was found for fennel. Rewarding selection always increased the estimated 24 h volume for fennel while for lavender a positive effect was detected at average rate of nectar removal. We found that the estimated 24 h volume was always greater than the measured 24 h volume. Our model demonstrated that the effect of insect foraging activity on flower's nectar productivity should be considered while estimating the resources produced by plants. As an alternative, measures of produced nectar volume in short time spans may be compared with the measured 24 h volume to check the reliability of this widespread method.

The Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) was established in 2011, and is now one of the major international social-ecological systems (SES) research networks. During this time, SES research has undergone a phase of rapid growth and has grown into an influential branch of sustainability science. In this Perspective, we argue that SES research has also deepened over the past decade, and helped to shed light on key dimensions of SES dynamics (e.g. system feedbacks, aspects of system design, goals and paradigms) that can lead to tangible action for solving the major sustainability challenges of our time. We suggest four ways in which the growth of place-based SES research, fostered by networks such as PECS, has contributed to these developments, namely by: 1) shedding light on transformational change, 2) revealing the social dynamics shaping SES, 3) bringing together diverse types of knowledge, and 4) encouraging reflexive researchers. International audience; Crickets (Ensifera, Grylloidea) are not commonly used as ecological indicators in contrary to other Orthoptera (e.g., grasshoppers and katydids). However, they are sensitive to environmental changes and abundant in tropical regions. To evaluate whether crickets are relevant bioindicators of tropical ecosystems, we investigated cricket assemblages along a tropical ecological gradient. We collected crickets during both day and night in southern New Caledonia for three stages of ecological succession: open shrubland, preforest, and forest. Simultaneously, we measured several environmental variables, such as temperature and relative humidity, at each sampling site. Cricket species assemblages showed a clear response to ecological succession. The highest and lowest species richness and abundances of individuals were, respectively, found in forest and shrubland, with species specialized in each ecological stage revealing the conservation value of each of these stages. Similar results were found when considering only the part of cricket communities with the ability to acoustically communicate. This work is part of a larger research program about Neocaledonian crickets and contributes to support the use of acoustic approaches to monitor tropical environments. In conclusion, these findings highlight the potential value of crickets as an environmental indicator in tropical ecosystems. The results also contribute to the discussion of the intrinsic conservational value of shrublands in New Caledonia and similar ecotypes.; Bien que d’autres groupes d’orthoptères soient largement utilisés comme bioindicateur, les grillons sont peu considérés dans les études écologiques. Pourtant, les grillons sont à la fois sensibles aux changements environnementaux et très abondants dans les régions tropicales. Dans cette étude, nous avons décrit les assemblages de grillons le long d’un gradient écologique en milieu tropical. Nous avons collecté les individus en période nocturne et diurne, sur 12 sites, et dans trois formations végétales du Sud de la Nouvelle Calédonie : le maquis, le paraforestier et le forestier. Des variables environnementales comme la température et l’humidité relative ont été collectées simultanément aux relevés de grillons. Les assemblages de grillons montrent une réponse très claire à la succession environnementale, suivant le gradient écologique, avec une diversité d’espèce et une abondance d’individus plus élevées en milieu forestier qu’en milieu maquis. Chaque stade du gradient écologique montre un assemblage unique d’espèces. Des résultats similaires sont obtenus en ne considérant que la part de la communauté des grillons qui utilisent l’acoustique pour communiquer. Ces résultats, interprétés à la lumière de travaux complémentaires faisant parties du même programme de recherche sur les grillons de Nouvelle-Calédonie, supporte l’analyse de relevés acoustiques pour évaluer l’état des milieux. En conclusion, les résultats soutiennent l’intérêt des grillons comme indicateurs écologiques du milieu tropical. Ces résultats contribuent également à la reconnaissance de la valeur intrinsèque des maquis en terme de conservation de la biodiversité en Nouvelle-Calédonie et dans des écotypes similaires.

International audience; Wetland ecosystems in water-limited environments locally boost biotic interactions, habitat diversity, and species concentrations, but little knowledge exists on their long-term functioning and susceptibility to regime shifts that might influence conservation and reclamation actions. Here we used a historical ecology approach on a rare Mediterranean peat-bog to reconstruct ecological successions for the last 4 millennia. The reconstruction is used to explore the role of geomorphic thresholds, climate changes, and anthropogenic perturbations as drivers of the ecosystem trajectory in the frame of the projected aridification of the climate. Our findings highlight how the superimposition of pastoral disturbances to river incision, has exacerbated ecosystem sensitivity to climate changes. Considering the long-term trajectory, the disappearance of the ecosystem might occur independently of changes in the precipitation regime. Insights given by Historical Ecology have implications for our understanding of ecosystem responses to perturbations, demonstrating that long-term dynamics must be considered before engaging in strict conservation action

International audience; Study question: What are the motivations, experience, and acceptability of thermal male contraception (TMC) in men using TMC as the only couple contraceptive ? Summary answer: Men wished to share the role of providing contraception in a couple and to avoid the use of hormones. Sexual satisfaction was significantly improved.What is known already: Two male contraceptive methods inducing spermatogenesis suppression have achieved contraceptive efficacy, on a large population for hormonal contraception and a smaller one for thermalcontraception (TC). The suppression of sperm counts to below 1 million/mL results in fertility rates commensurate with female pills. TC is obtained by wearing 15 hours/day a contraceptive underwear (CU) inducing a 2C increase in testicular temperature (Mieusset & Bujan 1994). As no commercially available male thermal contraceptive exists, little information regarding the acceptability of this approach to men has been reported and only one publication analysed the hypothetical acceptability of TMC (Amouroux et al. 2018). Study design, size, duration: We contacted 72 men who had started the CU testing phase between June 2011 and September 2019. The participants completed an anonymous online survey of 93 questions exploring population characteristics, contraceptive histories, motivations for choosing TC, patient experience at the successive phases of use, relations with partner and environment, and satisfaction with TC. Sexual life was evaluated by rating (1 to 4): frequency and pleasure of sexual intercourse, sexual desire, morning and intercourse erections. Participants/materials, setting, methods: Among men who had reached the contraception use phase, the quality ratings of sexual life were compared over time, from the contraceptive method used before TC (“N-1” method) to the 2 previous methods (“N-2” and “N-3”)): “N-3” versus “contraception use phase”, “N-3” versus “CU testing phase,” and “CU testing phase” versus “contraception use phase.” These comparisons were made for all 5 sexual life parameters by a paired samples Wilcoxon signed rank test. Main results and the role of chance: Sixty-seven men responded (93% response rate);63 participated in the survey (94% participation rate). The median age was 31 [21-52], 30 men (48%) had a Master’s degree or more, 49 (78%) had no child and 24 (38%) no parental project. Among the men whose couple’s contraception method immediately before TC (N-1) was a female method (n ¼ 36/63, 57%), the 2 main reasons for switching to a male method were the wish to share the role of providing contraception in a couple (n ¼ 31/36, 86%) and the willingness to take responsibility for contraception (n ¼ 21/36, 58%). The main motivations for choosing TC were “not using hormones” (n ¼ 59/63, 94%) and using a method regarded as “natural” (n ¼ 49/63, 78%). Most of men (68%) adopted the method in less than 2 weeks. 1. Pollinators are declining globally, with climate change implicated as an important driver. Climate change can induce phenological shifts and reduce floral resources for pollinators, but little is known about its effects on floral attractiveness and how this might cascade to affect pollinators, pollination functions and plant fitness. 2. We used an in situ long-term drought experiment to investigate multiple impacts of reduced precipitation in a natural Mediterranean shrubland, a habitat where climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and intensity of droughts. Focusing on three insect-pollinated plant species that provide abundant rewards and support a diversity of pollinators (Cistus albidus, Salvia rosmarinus and Thymus vulgaris), we investigated the effects of drought on a suite of floral traits including nectar production and floral scent. We also measured the impact of reduced rainfall on pollinator visits, fruit set and germination in S. rosmarinus and C. albidus. 3. Drought altered floral emissions of all three plant species qualitatively, and reduced nectar production in T. vulgaris only. Apis mellifera and Bombus gr. terrestris visited more flowers in control plots than drought plots, while small wild bees visited more flowers in drought plots than control plots. Pollinator species richness did not differ significantly between treatments. Fruit set and seed set in S. rosmarinus and C. albidus did not differ significantly between control and drought plots, but seeds from drought plots had slower germination for S. rosmarinus and marginally lower germination success in C. albidus. 4. Synthesis. Overall, we found limited but consistent impacts of a moderate experimental drought on floral phenotype, plant reproduction and pollinator visits. Increased aridity under climate change is predicted to be stronger than the level assessed in the present study. Drought impacts will likely be stronger and this could profoundly affect the structure and functioning of plant–pollinator networks in Mediterranean ecosystems.

International audience; Grasslands, which constitute almost 40% of the terrestrial biosphere, provide habitat for a great diversity of animals and plants and contribute to the livelihoods of more than 1 billion people worldwide. Whereas the destruction and degradation of grasslands can occur rapidly, recent work indicates that complete recovery of biodiversity and essential functions occurs slowly or not at all. Grassland restoration—interventions to speed or guide this recovery—has received less attention than restoration of forested ecosystems, often due to the prevailing assumption that grasslands are recently formed habitats that can reassemble quickly. Viewing grassland restoration as long-term assembly toward old-growth endpoints, with appreciation of feedbacks and threshold shifts, will be crucial for recognizing when and how restoration can guide recovery of this globally important ecosystem.

International audience; Sowing of wildflower strips has been integrated in agri-environment schemes of several European countries. Their beneficial effects on natural enemies of pest insects are well documented but (1) the desired spill-over into crop fields has not always been demonstrated, and (2) the need to adapt sown mixtures to regional climatic differences has been rarely addressed.We set up a multi-site experiment in different French climatic regions to compare effects of a wildflower strip with a grass mixture and spontaneous vegetation. The design included five regions, three to five fields per region and the three strip treatments being repeated in each field. We tested strip treatment effects on vegetation (plant species richness, plant and flower cover) and on natural enemies (hoverflies, ladybirds, aphid predation). In a subset, we further analysed the spill-over into winter wheat fields including natural enemies and pest insects (cereal aphids, leaf beetles).The wildflower strip mixture developed well in all regions and increased plant species richness and flower cover compared with grass strips and spontaneous vegetation. We found a corresponding higher hoverfly abundance and aphid predation in wildflower strips that were consistent in all regions, whereas ladybird abundance was not affected. A significantly higher hoverfly abundance, aphid predation and aphid parasitism in wheat fields close to wildflower strips indicated a spill-over. No corresponding margin treatment effects were observed for aphid and leaf beetle abundance in the field. A multivariate analysis comparing the influence of climate and vegetation parameters showed that floral cover better explained variation in natural enemy abundance and predation than climate. Our results demonstrated that similar mixtures of native plants can be used over large climatic gradients to improve biocontrol. Further research is needed to improve spill-over into crop fields and to obtain consistently strong effects in different climate zones.

International audience; Local cervical treatment for squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) removes or ablates a cone-shaped or dome-shaped part of the cervix that contains abnormal cells. This Series paper introduces the 2022 terminology for cone dimensions after local conservative treatment for SIL, CIN, or early invasive cervical cancer. The terminology was prepared by the Nomenclature Committee of the European Society of Gynaecologic Oncology, the European Federation for Colposcopy, the International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy, and the European Society of Pathology. Cone length should be tailored to the type of transformation zone. Treatment of SIL or CIN is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, which escalates with increasing cone length. There is a lack of agreement regarding terms used to report excised specimen dimensions both intraoperatively and in the pathology laboratory. Consensus is needed to make studies addressing effectiveness and safety of SIL or CIN treatment comparable, and to facilitate their use to improve accuracy of antenatal surveillance and management. This Series paper summarises the current terminology through a review of existing literature, describes new terminology as agreed by a group of experts from international societies in the field of cervical cancer prevention and treatment, and recommends use of the new terminology that will facilitate communication between clinicians and foster more specific treatment guidelines that balance obstetrical harm against therapeutic effectiveness.

International audience; X-ray and electron-beam (E-beam) sterilization technologies were assessed to supplement gamma sterilization, the most common radiation technology used today for biopharmaceutical product sterilization. The mechanical properties of a PE/EVOH/PE film were studied using tensile tests and dynamical mechanical analysis after each irradiation technology (i.e., gamma, electron beam and X-ray irradiations). The effects of each irradiation were compared using two statistical methods. The results indicate that the three irradiation technologies induce no difference in mechanical properties in the investigated dose range for this material.

International audience; The growing evidence for the role of introgression in evolution is challenging for species delimitation, taxonomy, and conservation. Here, we examine the isolation of Saxifraga delphinensis, a south-west alpine narrow endemic, from its sympatric congeners Saxifraga exarata and Saxifraga moschata. Our analyses, based on morphological, molecular and genome-wide data, were extended to taxa from Jura, Massif Central, north-east Iberian mountains and Pyrenees to broaden the phylogenetic scope of the study. Phylogenetic results support the close relationship between (i) S. delphinensis, Saxifraga cebennensis and one population of S. exarata from Queyras and (ii) between S. lamottei, S. giziana and S. moschata. Saxifraga exarata, which was extensively sampled, is composed of several clades and is paraphyletic to other taxa. While morphological and genetic data support the evolutionary distinctiveness of S. delphinensis, introgression with S. exarata is shown by various data and analyses. In addition, ABBA-BABA analyses and plastome phylogeny reveal a possible contribution of the north-east Iberian endemic Saxifraga vayredana into the history of S. delphinensis. Overall, the results show a complex evolutionary history with frequent hybridization and spanning several mountain ranges in Europe.

International audience; Extensive green roofs have been shown to support native biodiversity and plant communities that are analogous to natural or semi-natural habitats such as grasslands. However, little is known about the role of soil seedbanks in the dynamic of extensive green roof plant communities. The purpose of this study was to analyze the seedbank that developed after 4 years of an extensive green roof analog to dry grassland plant community, seeded with 29 species. We aimed to understand the contribution of seedbank to the resilience of vegetation to harsh conditions of the roof and to colonization by surrounding spontaneous species. We monitored the plant species cover in 36 plots during 4 years in June (between 2018 and 2021), and sampled the seedbank in February 2021. Our results showed that the soil seedbank was dominated by transient spontaneous ruderals species, while the standing vegetation was still dominated by seeded grassland species. We found that seeded grassland species had poor seedbank stock, similar to their natural environments. The similarity index between the standing vegetation and the seedbank increased over time, and we measured a significant correlation between dominant species cover and their seedbank density. Spontaneous species cover was not correlated to the proportion of soil not colonized by seeded species cover, indicating that gaps in vegetation did not influence the development of spontaneous species. Our findings highlight the importance of seedbank in the dynamic of green roof vegetation and demonstrate that analogous habitat species exhibit similar behavior as in their natural environments.

IntroductionSemi-natural dry grasslands are among the species-richest and most diverse habitats in Europe especially in the Mediterranean Basin. They evolved with long-term severe environmental constraints, either biotic (e.g., grazing or mowing) or abiotic (e.g., dryness or oligotrophy). Their recovery after sever anthropogenic disturbance, such as cultivation is often very slow and incomplete. A deeper understanding of the processes driving the recovery would be of great benefit to better restore or conserve these grasslands. We used the filter model as a framework to assess the relative importance of dispersion, abiotic and biotic filters as drivers of this recovery.MethodsWe studied the medium-term dynamics of 37 Mediterranean dry grassland plant communities after an episode of cultivation in the plain of La Crau (Southern France) by two census: after 25 years of abandonment, and revisited 10 years later (35 years of abandonment). Our aims were to characterize the temporal medium-term dynamics of these communities, to measure their taxonomic resilience and to identify the drivers. We performed structural equation modeling to measure the importance of the various drivers, with cover of remnant dry grasslands surrounding each studied community as a proxy for the dispersion filter, soil pH and phosphorus content as proxies for the abiotic filter and cover of the most dominant species as a proxy for the biotic filter.Results and DiscussionOur results show that former arable field vegetation do not recover after more than 40 years. The three filters drive the recovery of dry grassland vegetation: former arable fields that have lower phosphorus content (abiotic filter) have a lower cover of dominant species (biotic filter), a higher species richness and a higher similarity with remnant dry grassland plant communities, especially if the former arable fields are surrounded by remnant dry grasslands (dispersion filter).

International audience; Grazing is recognized as a major process driving the composition of plant communities in grasslands, mostly due to the heterogeneous removal of plant species and soil compaction that results in a mosaic of small patches called micro-patterns. To date, no study has investigated the differences in composition and functioning among these micro-patterns in grasslands in relation to grazing and soil environmental variables at the micro-local scale. In this study, we ask (1) To what extent are micro-patterns different from each other in terms of species composition, species richness, vegetation volume, evenness, and functioning? and (2) based on multigroup structural equation modeling, are those differences directly or indirectly driven by grazing and soil characteristics? We focused on three micro-patterns of the Mediterranean dry grassland of the Crau area, a protected area traditionally grazed in the South-East of France. From 70 plant community relevés carried out in three micro-patterns located in four sites with different soil and grazing characteristics, we performed univariate, multivariate analyses and applied structural equation modeling for the first time to this type of data. Our results show evidence of clear differences among micro-pattern patches in terms of species composition, vegetation volume, species richness, evenness, and functioning at the micro-local scale. These differences are maintained not only by direct and indirect effects of grazing but also by several soil variables such as fine granulometry. Biological crusts appeared mostly driven by these soil variables, whereas reference and edge communities are mostly the result of different levels of grazing pressure revealing three distinct functioning specific to each micro-pattern, all of them coexisting at the micro-local scale in the studied Mediterranean dry grassland. This first overview of the multiple effects of grazing and soil characteristics on communities in micro-patterns is discussed within the scope of the conservation of dry grasslands plant diversity.

International audience; The present study aimed to characterise the bacterial, fungal and parasite gut community of the invasive bee Megachile sculpturalis sampled from native (Japan) and invaded (USA and France) regions via 16S rRNA and ITS2 amplicon sequencing and PCR detection of bee microparasites. The bacterial and fungal gut microbiota communities in bees from invaded regions were highly similar and differed strongly from those obtained in Japan. Core amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) within each population represented environmental micro-organisms commonly present in bee-associated niches that likely provide beneficial functions to their host. Although the overall bacterial and fungal communities of the invasive M. sculpturalis in France and the co-foraging native bees Anthidium florentinum and Halictus scabiosae, were significantly different, five out of eight core ASVs were shared suggesting common environmental sources and potential transmission. None of the 46 M. sculpturalis bees analysed harboured known bee pathogens, while microparasite infections were common in A. florentinum, and rare in H. scabiosae. A common shift in the gut microbiota of M. sculpturalis in invaded regions as a response to changed environmental conditions, or a founder effect coupled to population re-establishment in the invaded regions may explain the observed microbial community profiles and the absence of parasites. While the role of pathogen pressure in shaping biological invasions is still debated, the absence of natural enemies may contribute to the invasion success of M. sculpturalis.

Since 1991 in France, scientific diving has been recognized by law as an occupational sector and is therefore regulated with the aim to reduce the hyperbaric risk. Currently, French scientific diving encompasses many fields such as life sciences and ecology, geosciences, social & cultural sciences including archeology, health & food, engineering sciences, energy... Due to the existence of overseas territories - with France's maritime spaces representing the world's second largest exclusive economic zone - French territories display an extensive variety of submarine habitats. Furthermore, the historical richness of scientific diving in France has led the French scientific diving community to be involved in all oceans worldwide. All subaquatic ecosystems, from the polar regions to the tropical belt, from drowned karsts to freshwater and high altitude lakes, including mesocosms and artificial structures are studied by diving scientists. On top of the traditional diving methods (apnea, open circuit and hookah) scientific diving benefits in recent years from the use of closed-circuit rebreathers but also from combining CCR and saturation methods, which greatly enhanced the study of the mesophotic zones. In light of the diversity of environments, disciplines and scientific issues, scientific divers are continuously innovating to perform outstanding research. International audience; Objective: To compare survival and morbidity rates between primary cytoreductive surgery (pCRS) and interval cytoreductive surgery (iCRS) for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), using a propensity score.Design: We conducted a propensity score-matched cohort study, using data from the FRANCOGYN cohort.Setting: Retrospective, multicentre study of data from patients followed in 15 French department specialized in the treatment of ovarian cancer.Sample: Patients included were those with International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage III or IV EOC, with peritoneal carcinomatosis, having undergone CRS.Methods: The propensity score was designed using pre-therapeutic variables associated with both treatment allocation and overall survival (OS).Main outcome measures: The primary outcome was OS. Secondary outcomes included recurrence-free survival (RFS), quality of CRS and other variables related to surgical morbidity.Results: A total of 513 patients were included. Among these, 334 could be matched, forming 167 pairs. No difference in OS was found (hazard ratio, HR = 0.8, p = 0.32). There was also no difference in RFS (median = 26 months in both groups) nor in the rate of CRS leaving no macroscopic residual disease (pCRS 85%, iCRS 81.4%, p = 0.76). The rates of gastrointestinal tract resections, stoma, postoperative complications and hospital stay were significantly higher in the pCRS group.Conclusions: Analysis of groups of patients made comparable by propensity score matching showed no difference in survival, but lower postoperative morbidity in patients treated with iCRS.

To achieve the ambitious goals of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, restoration frameworks should embrace the diversity of ecosystems found on Earth, including open-canopy ecosystems, which have been largely overlooked. Considering the paucity of scientific foundations promoting restoration science, policy, and practice for open tropical ecosystems, we provide overarching guidelines to restore the campo rupestre, a Neotropical, open megadiverse grassland that has been increasingly threatened by multiple human activities, especially mining. Restoration techniques for tropical grasslands are still at its infancy, and attempts to restore campo rupestre have had, so far, low to moderate success, highlighting the need for a tailored restoration framework. In a scenario of increasing degradation and scarcity of on-site restoration experiments, we propose 10 principles to improve our ability to plan, implement, and monitor restoration in campo rupestre: (1) include socioeconomic dimensions, (2) implement active restoration, (3) keep low soil fertility, (4) restore disturbance regimes, (5) address genetic structure and adaptation potential, (6) restore geographically restricted and specialized ecological interactions, (7) incorporate functional approaches, (8) use seed-based restoration strategies to enhance biodiversity, (9) translocation is inevitable, and (10) long-term monitoring is mandatory. Our principles represent the best available evidence to support better science and practice for the restoration of campo rupestre and, to some extent, can be useful for other megadiverse, fire-prone, and nutrient-poor ecosystems.

Insecticide toxicity may strongly vary with temperature, and interspecific differences have been commonly reported for this relationship. A differential influence of temperature on insecticide toxicity between pests and their natural enemies may have important consequences on biological control in a global warming context. This study aimed to investigate cross effects between temperature and three insecticides - i.e., chlorantraniliprole, emamectin and spinosad - on the mortality of a major pest in orchards, Cydia pomonella L., and two of its natural enemies in southern France, the predatory earwig Forficula auricularia L. and the introduced parasitoid Mastrus ridens Horstmann. We observed a decreased efficiency of emamectin and spinosad with increasing temperature on mortality of codling moth, while no influence of temperature on chlorantraniliprole efficacy was observed. Increasing temperatures increased the toxicity of all insecticides against M. ridens and only for emamectin on F. auricularia. This study provides essential insight to make recommendations for using these insecticides in combination with two natural enemies to control the codling moth in a warming world. Our results suggest that the use of spinosad may become sub-optimal under higher temperatures. In contrast, chlorantraniliprole should remain suitable under warmer climatic conditions to control C. pomonella, conserve F. auricularia and facilitate the establishment of M. ridens. For conservation biological control relying on F. auricularia, alternating use of emamectin during early spring, when its toxicity is the lowest on this natural enemy, and chlorantraniliprole during summer could limit resistance risks in codling moth populations and reduce the insecticides' impact on the populations of natural enemies.

International audience; Land use is known to be one of the major factors driving soil microbial and physico-chemical properties. Understanding its long-term effect remains a major challenge in assessing current soil functioning. Here, soil microbial and physico-chemical properties of recent and very recent forests (forests developed in 1958 vs. after 1958) were compared with those of ancient forests (present in 1860 and 1958) to assess the effect of Land Use Legacy (LUL). LUL effects were further analysed depending on contrasting (i) climate conditions (sub-humid vs. humid Mediterranean climates) and (ii) seasons (winter and summer), to examine whether LUL modified microbial responses to different spatio-temporal climate conditions. Microbial indicators (lignocellulolytic activities, basal respiration, and microbial biomass) and physico-chemical properties (C and N contents, mineralogical analyses, pH and conductivity) were assessed. A strong effect of past agricultural practice (terrace cultivation) was observed in soils from very recent forests: reduced microbial biomass and activities as well as number of Quercus pubescens stems together with increased phosphorous content and pH. Interestingly, LUL effect did not affect microbial and physico-chemical responses to seasonal contrasts (winter vs. summer). Microbial response to LUL was not influenced by climate while climate modified LUL effects on some physico-chemical properties (CaCO3, Corg, and K content). Moreover, soil recovered “pristine” physico-chemical and microbial functional properties after at least 60 years of reforestation.

International audience; Urbanization of coastal habitats, often exemplified by harbors and marinas, has led to various ecological paradigms, questioning the functioning of these new ecosystems. In the present study we investigated, in a large Mediterranean harbor, whether spatial variation of pollution is present and if this variability drives the structure of the sessile community. We hypothesized locations to have significantly different communities, based on the assumption on the occurrence of environmental gradients of pollution that would constitute selective filters. Three distinct community types were identified in June, coinciding with spatially variable contaminants in sediments. We observed then an unexpected shift of the community between June and August associated to a sharp decrease in biodiversity and a decline of most species, masking the effects of local variation and thus leading to the homogenization of the biodiversity within the harbor. This shift coincided with successive heatwaves (the longest lasting 13 days over 25°C, with a thermal peak at 28°C) which might potentially be associated with a die-off in the harbor communities, regardless of location.

International audience; Assessing the relationship between grassland plant diversity and agronomic value is a major challenge to reconcile nature conservation and agricultural use of extensive grassland habitats. To do this, multiple facets of forage production must be considered such as the quantity produced and its nutritive value, commonly assessed through its digestibility, energy content, and nutrient content. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of plant diversity and functional traits on forage productivity and nutritive value in a wide set of semi-natural grassland habitats.Forage was sampled in 202 plots located across 68 permanent extensive grasslands in eight regions of France. Species and functional diversity indices, community-weighted means (CWM) of plant functional traits, and the relative cover of main plant functional types (PFT; graminoids, forbs, and legumes) were used to describe plant communities. Forage production was evaluated by recording early standing biomass (SB), and nutritive value parameters, namely digestibility (DMD), crude protein content (CP), and average mineral content (MinAv) at the beginning of the vegetation growing season.Species richness was negatively associated with SB and MinAv. Species evenness was positively correlated with CP, DMD, and MinAv, while PFT evenness was positively correlated with CP and DMD. Forage standing biomass increased with increasing graminoid cover and decreased with increasing forb cover. A higher legume cover and specific leaf area CWM as well as a lower leaf dry matter content CWM was associated with improved forage nutritive value and had no effect on SB. Our results highlight that a better forage nutritive value can be obtained with a higher plant species evenness in permanent grassland habitats. Furthermore, in grasslands with an even distribution of plant functional types, forage nutritive value may be improved with no loss in early standing biomass.

We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1° × 1°) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the ‘Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites’ (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. International audience; Different starch properties may cause alterations in the foodstuff's external appearance. However, modification processes in starches are usually secretive. The use of chemically modified starches is regulated by international standards, which makes it important to identify its presence and type. Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR)-modified starches' identification can be hindered by the presence of excess glucose. This research investigates types of modification in commercial starches and in approaches that circumvent MIR's limitations with exploratory analysis. It also considers that enzymatic hydrolysis (α-amylase and amyloglucosidase) can highlight the points of modification in the structure, which can be detected with infrared assays. To determine if sour cassava starch (FCS) is modified and check its type, six samples were selected: a native one, three of the most common cassava modified starches (etherified, esterified, and FCS), and two laboratory processed samples (Acid, Oxidized). The results showed that the sour cassava starch showed similarities with a commercial ester and an oxidized cassava starch, which may be due to the formation of a graft, corresponding to what the literature has already reported for corn starch treated with lactic acid and gamma radiation.

International audience; Aim: In the face of ongoing climate warming, we wanted to quantify impacts on vegetation at one of the major climatic and biogeographical boundaries of Europe, the limit between the Mediterranean and Eurosiberian biogeographical regions. We analyse temperature and moisture requirements of plants along altitudinal gradients at regional scale in the period 1980–2020 and we explore if changes coincide with observedchanges in the same regions in terms of measured climatic data.Location: Southern France.Time period: 1980–2020.Taxa: Vascular plants.Methods: We calculated shifts in plants’ temperature and moisture requirements for a large floristic database from south-eastern France (SIMETHIS) during the period 1980–2020 along altitudinal gradients by using ecological indicator values (EIV). Additionally, we analysed standardized weather station data from the same area and period, to investigate whether floristic changes are synchronized with climatechanges.Results: Vegetation data suggest a linear increase in temperature requirements of plant communities from 1980 to 2020 with a greater change at low altitudes. Upward shifts in temperature requirements coincided with observed climate change although warming did not show a general trend towards greater increases at low altitudes. Data on vegetation and climate suggest an upward shift of respectively 150 and 300 m for the boundary between Mediterranean and temperate belts. Moisture requirements of vegetation indicate an increase of the frequency of dry adapted species at low altitudes but an increase towards higher moisture requirements at high altitudes. Comparing vegetation responses with climate data suggests that responses are faster at low altitudes.Main conclusions: Our analyses show that strong general changes in vegetation are underway and highlight faster responses of vegetation to warming in low altitudes compared to high altitudes and demonstrate the need for reliable data on vegetation and climate changes, especially on water balance.

Better understanding insects’ movements could help preserve and restore the insect communities that are key to the functioning of grasslands. Recent technological advances have led to spectacular achievements in movement ecology, making it possible to track the individual movements of a wide variety of organisms, including the smallest. However, monitoring systems such as RFID tags may negatively impact an organism’s life history, with potential consequences on the reliability of data and conclusions. This study explored the potential of passive RFID tags to track the movements of three small ground-dwelling beetle species, a predator (Poecilus sericeus, Carabidae), a detritivore (Asida sericea, Tenebrionidae) and a granivore (Acinopus picipes, Carabidae), in a Mediterranean dry grassland degraded by years of cultivation. First, we tested whether carrying tags might impact individuals’ behaviour, using a before-and-after design under laboratory conditions. Despite a trend toward shorter displacements, we found no significant short-term effect of the tags on individuals’ movements. Second, we tracked a total of 25 tagged beetles in their natural environment every 4 h for 48 h. We highlight the principal limitation of using passive tags with small terrestrial beetles: the antenna has to pass over the tags to detect them, which restricts tracking to a few consecutive days after which the probability of locating an individual is low. However, the data obtained sheds light on the biological rhythms and daily movement capabilities of our target species: A. sericea is more mobile and P. sericeus less mobile than expected. Such knowledge could help predict the species’ ability to recolonise degraded areas, enabling appropriate restoration actions to be designed based on landscape ecology principles.

International audience; Preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services is critical for sustainable development and human well-being. However, an unprecedented erosion of biodiversity is observed and the use of plant protection products (PPP) has been identified as one of its main causes. In this context, at the request of the French Ministries responsible for the Environment, for Agriculture and for Research, a panel of 46 scientific experts ran a nearly 2-year-long (2020-2022) collective scientific assessment (CSA) of international scientific knowledge relating to the impacts of PPP on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The scope of this CSA covered the terrestrial, atmospheric, freshwater, and marine environments (with the exception of groundwater) in their continuity from the site of PPP application to the ocean, in France and French overseas territories, based on international knowledge produced on or transposable to this type of context (climate, PPP used, biodiversity present, etc.). Here, we provide a brief summary of the CSA's main conclusions, which were drawn from about 4500 international publications. Our analysis finds that PPP contaminate all environmental matrices, including biota, and cause direct and indirect ecotoxicological effects that unequivocally contribute to the decline of certain biological groups and alter certain ecosystem functions and services. Levers for action to limit PPP-driven pollution and effects on environmental compartments include local measures from plot to landscape scales and regulatory improvements. However, there are still significant gaps in knowledge regarding environmental contamination by PPPs and its effect on biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services. Perspectives and research needs are proposed to address these gaps.

International audience; Warm drylands represent 19% of land surfaces worldwide and host ca. 1100 tree species. The risk of decline due to climate aridification of this neglected biodiversity has been overlooked despite its ecological and societal importance. To fill this gap, we assessed the risk of decline due to climate aridification of tree species in warm drylands based on spatialized occurrence data and climate models. We considered both species vulnerability and exposure, compared the risk of tree species decline across five bioregions and searched for phylogenetic correlates. Depending on the future climate model, from 44% to 88% of warm drylands' tree species will undergo climate aridification with a high risk of decline even under the most optimistic conditions. On a regional scale, the rate of species that will undergo climate aridification in the future varies from 21% in the Old World North, to 90% in Australia, with a risk of decline confirming the high level of risk predicted at the global scale. Using generalized linear mixed models, we found that, species more exposed to climate aridification will be more at risk, but also that species vulnerability is a key driver of their risk of decline. Indeed, the warm drylands specialist species will be less at risk due to climate aridification than species being marginal in warm drylands. We also found that the risk of decline is widespread across the main clades of the phylogeny and involves several evolutionary distinct species. Estimating a high risk of decline for numerous tree species in all warm drylands, including emblematic dryland endemics, our work warns that future increase in aridity could result in an extensive erosion of tree biodiversity in these ecosystems

International audience; Tappeh Qazānchi, not far from the Razavar river, is located to the northwest of Kermanshah city at 1323 masl. Parts of the north and east sides of the mound have been damaged by agricultural activities. As a result, 100 m of the northern section has been exposed, and has been found to contain cultural sequences from throughout the Holocene. The site was sounded during the winter of 2019 to identify the cultural sequences, site formation and settlement patterns present. The extent of the core area was estimated to be ca. 2 hectares, following sounding results in test trenches that were excavated in order to define the core area and buffer zone. The first results from the stratigraphic excavation and the relative and absolute chronologies indicate that the upper levels of the site belong to the Middle Bronze Age and the Late Chalcolithic periods, and the lower levels contain a Pre-Pottery Neolithic sequence. The results of archaeobotanical, archaeozoological, micromorphological and palaeoclimatological studies point to a localised wet environment during the Holocene with periodically flooded zones around the site. Tappeh Qazānchi is comparable to the Middle Bronze Age of Chogha Maran (upper phase) and Godin Tepe (Period III), as well as the Late Chalcolithic of Siahbid (middle and late phases) and GodinTepe (Period IX), that are located in the same cultural range in Central Zagros. The Pre-Pottery Neolithic phases at Qazānchi are also contemporaneous to East Chia Sabz, Sheikh-e Abad, Kelek Asad Morad and Chogha Golan, and this is also one of the first settlements in the early Holocene in the east of the Fertile Crescent.

Fires in Africa account for more than half of global fire-carbon emissions but the long-term evolution of fire activity and its link to global climate change remains elusive. Paleofire records provide descriptive information about fire changes through time, going beyond the range of satellite observations, although fire regime characteristics are challenging to reconstruct. To address this conceptual gap, we report here the abundance and morphometric data for a large set of microscopic charcoal samples (n = 128) recovered from surface ocean sediments offshore Africa. We show that in subtropical Southern Africa, large and intense fires prevailing in open savanna-grassland ecosystems produce a high abundance of small and elongated microcharcoal particles. In contrast, in the forest ecosystems of equatorial and tropical regions of western and central Africa, low-intensity fires dominate, producing low amounts of squared microcharcoal particles. Microcharcoal concentration and morphotype in marine sediment records off Africa are thus indicative of fire regime characteristics. Applied to down-core marine charcoal records, these findings reveal that at orbital time-scale intense and large, open grassland-savanna fires occurred during wet periods in the sub-tropical areas. A strong contribution of fire carbon emissions during periods of precession and summer insolation maxima in the geological record is thus expected.

International audience; Anemone-like animals belonging to the order Zoantharia are common anthozoans widely distributed from shallow to deep tropical and subtropical waters. Some species are well-known because of their high toxicity due to the presence of palytoxin (PLTX) in their tissues. PLTX is a large polyhydroxylated compound and one of the most potent toxins known. Currently, the PLTX biosynthetic pathway in zoantharians and the role of the host or the putative symbiotic organism(s) involved in this pathway are entirely unknown. To better understand the presence of PLTX in some Zoantharia, twenty-nine zoantharian colonies were analysed in this study. All zoantharian samples and their endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodiniaceae = Zooxanthellae) were identified using DNA barcoding and phylogenetic reconstructions. Quantification of PLTX and its analogues showed that the yields contained in Palythoa heliodiscus, Palythoa aff. clavata and one potentially undescribed species of Palythoa are among the highest ever found (up to > 2 mg/g of wet zoantharian). Mass spectrometry imaging was used for the first time on Palythoa samples and revealed that in situ distribution of PLTX is mainly located in ectodermal tissues such as the epidermis of the body wall and the pharynx. Moreover, high levels of PLTX have been detected in histological regions where few or no Symbiodiniaceae cells could be observed. Finally, issues such as host-specificity and environmental variables driving biogeographical patterns of hosted Symbiodiniaceae in zoantharian lineages were discussed in light of our phylogenetic results as well as the patterns of PLTX distribution. It was concluded that (1) the variability of Symbiodiniaceae diversity may be related to ecological divergence in Zoantharia, (2) All Palythoa species hosted Cladocopium Symbiodiniaceae (formerly clade C), (3) the sole presence of Cladocopium is not sufficient to explain the presence of high concentrations of PLTX and/or its analogues and (4) the ability to produce high levels of PLTX and/or its analogues highlighted in some Palythoa species could be a plesiomorphic character inherited from their last common ancestor and subsequently lost in several lineages.

International audience; Cupressus sempervirens L. is the only native Cupressus in Iran. Basically, the placement of real Mediterranean Forests in the Euro-Siberian vegetation is not expected although its presence in Hyrcanian areas is valuable. In this study; floristic composition, life forms, and chorological spectrum in habitats were analyzed. A total of 700 species belonging to 386 genera from 87 families were recorded. Fabaceae (75), Asteraceae (72), Poaceae (71), and Lamiaceae (46), comprise the largest number of species. 81 species of trees and shrubs grow along with cypress in these areas. Among the recorded life forms, therophytes with 273 species, and hemicryptophytes with 224 species were dominant. More than 85% of the species have at least one Mediterranean or western Iran-Turanian chorotype, which shows a close relationship between cypress growing areas in Iran and the main Mediterranean areas. A total number of 59 species were endemic to Iran. Of these, 31 species (52%) are common with the Irano-Turanian region, 26 species (44%) with the Hyrcanian province, and 2 species (4%) with the Mediterranean region. The results were compared to other studies in the other areas where the cypress does not grow and the cypress grows but outside the Hyrcanian range (Firoozabad, Fars). Our goal is to do a complete floristic and vegetation study in common cypress habitats in Hyrcanian chorion that had imperfections of data. Although these habitats are located within the Hyrcanian chorion, results revealed the floristic composition is not similar to that of the typical Hyrcanian habitats

soumis a JGR Atmospheres - First posted online: Fri, 8 Oct 2021; International audience; During the extended activity of Mount Etna volcano in February-April 2021, three distinct paroxysmal events took place from 21 to 26 February, which were associated with a very uncommon transport of the injected upper-tropospheric plumes towards the north. Using a synergy of observations and modelling, we characterised the emissions and three-dimensional dispersion for these three plumes, we monitor their downwind distribution and optical properties, and we estimate their radiative impacts at selected locations. With a satellite-based source inversion, we estimate the emitted sulphur dioxide (SO2) mass at an integrated value of 55 kt and plumes injections at up to 12 km altitudes, which qualifies this series as an extreme event for Mount Etna. Then, we combine Lagrangian dispersion modelling, initialised with measured temporally-resolved SO2 emission fluxes and altitudes, with satellite observations to track the dispersion of the three individual plumes. The transport towards the north allowed the height-resolved downwind monitoring of the plumes at selected observatories in France, Italy and Israel, using LiDARs and photometric aerosol observations. Volcanic-specific aerosol optical depths in the visible spectral range ranging from about 0.004 to 0.03 and local daily average shortwave radiative forcing ranging from about -0.2 to -1.2 W/m2 (at the top of atmosphere) and from about -0.2 to -3.0 W/m2 (at the surface) are found. The composition (possible presence of ash), aerosol optical depth and radiative forcing of the plume has a large inter- and intra-plume variability and thus depend strongly on the position of the sampled section of the plumes.

International audience; This paper aims to investigate episodes of water stress and the human response to them in the Southern Zagros Mountains from a long-term perspective. The integrative analysis of data from different archives allows for identification of phases of drought in the region, especially starting from the Sasanian period onwards. This investigation also shows that specific imperial politics such as that of the Sasanian Kings Kawāḏ I and Ḵosrow I helped to ensure that agricultural communities and practices were sufficiently resilient to these changes. These politics were essentially based on tax reliefs for in-need farmers and state investments on the micro-level. However, pastoral and multi-resources lifestyles remained the ultimate resilience strategies in case of severe aridification.

International audience; The French southern lands and seas are home to the largest national reserve and its marine domain continues to expand around the islands of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam. An unprecedented project is underway to better understand and protect their rich ecosystems in the face of growing anthropogenic pressures.In response to the alarming IPBES report on the state of biodiversity (2019), France has decided to increase the ratio of its marine and terrestrial protected areas to 30% of the national territory by 2022. The strategy adopted included the creation of a marine protected area around these islands in the Indian Ocean. Un chantier sans précédent s’ouvre pour mieux comprendre et protéger leurs riches écosystèmes face à des pressions anthropiques croissantes.En réaction au rapport alarmant de l’IPBES sur l’état de la biodiversité (2019), la France a décidé de porter la part de ses aires marines et terrestres protégées à 30% du territoire national à l’horizon 2022. La stratégie adoptée incluait la création d’une aire marine protégée aux abords de ces îles de l’océan Indien. Cet article en présente les enjeux et en offre un état des lieux.

International audience; The Gorgan Plain (NE Iran) is largely treeless today but it possibly was not in the past. We use palaeobotanical data from radiocarbon-dated sediments and archaeological excavations to investigate the extent and use of woodland under the Sasanian Empire (224–651 CE). Palynology, anatomical studies of charred and uncharred wood, insects and botanical macroremains have shed new light on this question. Palynological research points to natural origins of the open steppe vegetation in the Gorgan Plain contrasting to carpological and wood anatomy studies indicating wide use of trees and shrubs during the Sasanian period. As it shown by charcoal data, local sources provided enough firewood for kilns in short-term use, but were insufficient for supplying fortification garrisons which required additional supplies from the Hyrcanian forests. These forests provided the main source of firewood for sites located close to the Alborz Mountains. Cultivation of trees was widespread during the Sasanian era for fruits, shadow and possibly moriculture for silk production. Palaeobotanical records are stillvery rare in the Gorgan Plain. New data are a desideratum to gain further insights into woodland use before, during and after the Sasanian Empire.
