Migratory patterns of the catfish Genidens genidens in four estuaries along the Brazilian Atlantic coast are reconstructed from otolith Sr/Ca, a salinity proxy, to test estuarine‐dependency. To facilitate interpretation of this proxy in otolith core‐to‐edge profiles, a Sr/Ca Reference Value for High Salinity (RVHSSr/Ca) of 4.88 mmol/mol was established experimentally, from fish specimens reared in water with a salinity level (33 psu) between estuarine and high salinity (marine) water. All wild specimens exhibited otolith Sr/Ca values higher than RVHSSr/Ca, suggesting that G. genidens utilizes environments with marine salinity. Our results reveal highly variable environmental histories, with at least five major habitat usage patterns. Most distinctive among these, we find that (a) fish from Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC) exhibit high intraindividual heterogeneity; (b) most fish (57%) from Guanabara Bay (GB) exhibit prolonged exposure to very high salinities, often exceeding 36.5 psu levels found in some shelf sectors; and (c) some fish from Paraiba do Sul River, GB and PEC exhibit Sr/Ca values below RVHSSr/Ca consistent with estuarine residence. In this work, eleven new derivatives were prepared of the alkaloid olivacine (1), which was isolated from the bark of Aspidosperma australe. These compounds (7a–k) are hybrids of olivacine and indoles or carbazole, tethered by alkyl chains of variable lengths (C-4, C-5 or C-6). Compounds 7a–k showed increased cytotoxicity towards a panel of four cell lines. The subcellular localization of olivacine and of the synthetic derivatives was studied by fluorescence microscopy. The cycles of K562 cells exposed to olivacine or compounds 7a–k were analysed by flow cytometry, and showed, for some of the new derivatives, a different profile of cell distribution among the phases of the cycle when compared to olivacine, which is indicative of lysosomal apoptosis. The otolith chemistry is one of the most commonly used tools to elucidate the structure of fish stocks. The correct application of this methodology depends on the fulfillment of several assumptions. One of the most relevant assumptions is that the otoliths and water chemistries vary at appropriate spatio-temporal scale in relation to the hypotheses being addressed. Due to the increase in the number of publications where this assumption is not properly considered, it is essential to discuss and order different concepts to contribute to the correct interpretation of the information provided by the otolith chemistry applied to the delimitation of stocks. Herein, the opportunity for dispersal concepts in otolith chemistry-based stock discrimination methods is discussed integrating the space-time scales, and biogeographic foundations. Additionally, a graphic guide was developed to facilitate hypothesis testing and their respective interpretations. This article encourages further use and attention on age and growth data, dispersal ability and life history, but further integration of the issue of biology versus management, as well as how the integration of other approaches may assist, is recommended, as most likely there will be no single approach to resolve stock structure. Humans have long been fascinated by the mysteries surrounding fish migrations and addressing these complex behaviors often requires large data sets. Biogeochemical tags, including trace elements and stable isotopes, are the most accessible biomarkers for tracking fish migrations. However, access to standardized biogeochemical tag data is rarely available for migratory fish, which limits our understanding of the evolutionary origins, drivers, timing, and corridors of migration. This precludes the development of conservation strategies and the implementation of management actions. Here, we present MFishBT, a global, open‐access database of Migratory Fish's Biogeochemical Tags. As of April 2023, the MFishBT contains biogeochemical records from 1,305 studies, of which 53% used element‐to‐calcium (E/Ca) ratios, 34% used isotopic ratios, and 13% used both. The database covers 17,413 field sampling locations (inland 47% vs. marine 53%) around the globe, comprising 490 migratory fish species of four classes, 44 orders/suborders, and 137 families. In total, 77 trace elements and 11 isotope systems were measured across various fish biological archives, including otoliths, scales, eye lenses, and vertebrae. E/Ca ratios were examined more frequently than isotopic ratios, led by Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca, and 87Sr/86Sr, δ13C, and δ18O. The MFishBT compiles 27,030, 16,222, and 2,481,714 records with biogeochemical data detected in the core, edge, and core‐to‐edge transects for biological archives of migratory fish. This is the most globally comprehensive open‐access database on biogeochemical tags in migratory fish to date, and can serve a variety of needs in scientific research, conservation, and management. White sea catfish Genidens barbus is an endangered amphidromous species distributed between northeastern Brazil and northern Argentine Patagonia, whose migratory behaviour at the southern end of its range is unknown. Here, the migratory patterns of this species were studied including marine and freshwater (Patagonian stock) environments via otolith core-to-edge Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca profiles. Based on the Sr/Ca ratio, all specimens were classified as amphidromous with annual cycles of movement between waters of relatively low to high salinity occurring during spring. The core Sr/Ca ratio matched with the reference values for freshwater in all specimens. No evidence of resident freshwater or marine individuals was found. No evident antagonistic relationship was found between both Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios. A Ba/Ca peak was observed followed by a drop coinciding with the core edge, highlighting the need to evaluate the potential transfer from the yolk, and to understand what factors are linked to the growth marks within the first year of life.
