Abstract

HAADF-STEM tomography is a common technique for characterizing the three-dimensional morphology of nanomaterials. In conventional tomographic reconstruction algorithms, the image intensity is assumed to be a linear projection of a physical property of the specimen. However, this assumption of linearity is not completely valid due to the nonlinear damping of signal intensities. The nonlinear damping effects increase w.r.t the specimen thickness and lead to so-called “cupping artifacts”, due to a mismatch with the linear model used in the reconstruction algorithm. Moreover, nonlinear damping effects can strongly limit the applicability of advanced reconstruction approaches such as Total Variation Minimization and discrete tomography. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for automatically correcting the nonlinear effects and the subsequent cupping artifacts. It is applicable to samples in which chemical compositions can be segmented based on image gray levels. The correction is realized by iteratively estimating the nonlinear relationship between projection intensity and sample thickness, based on which the projections are linearized. The correction and reconstruction algorithms are tested on simulated and experimental data.

Abstract

Tomographic reconstruction algorithms offer a means by which a tilt-series of transmission images can be combined to yield a three dimensional model of the specimen. Conventional reconstruction algorithms assume that the measured signal is a linear projection of some property, typically the density, of the material. Here we report the use of multislice simulations to investigate the extent to which this assumption is met in HAADF-STEM imaging. The use of simulations allows for a systematic survey of a range of materials and microscope parameters to inform optimal experimental design. Using this approach it is demonstrated that the imaging of amorphous materials is in good agreement with the projection assumption in most cases. Images of crystalline specimens taken along zone-axes are found to be poorly suited for conventional linear reconstruction algorithms due to channelling effects which produce enhanced intensities compared with off-axis images, and poor compliance with the projection requirement. Off-axis images are found to be suitable for reconstruction, though they do not strictly meet the linearity requirement in most cases. It is demonstrated that microscope parameters can be selected to yield improved compliance with the projection requirement.

Abstract

We have measured the coalescence lifetimes of AOT-stabilised oil and water drops with the AOT monolayer present at the planar oil-water interface. Measurements were made as a function of aqueous phase NaCl concentration over the range over which phase inversion of the emulsions occurs and for heptane, dodecane and tetradecane as oil. The drop lifetimes decrease sharply with increasing [NaCl]. Below a crossover [NaCl], the oil drop lifetimes are longer than the water drops, whereas this behaviour is reversed at higher [NaCl]. The [NaCl] at the crossover points for the three oils increases with alkane chain length. This behaviour is compared with that of the corresponding emulsion systems which are water continuous at low [NaCl] but phase invert to give oil-continuous emulsions at high [NaCl]. The NaCl concentrations required for emulsion phase inversion increase with increasing oil chain length but are not identical to the [NaCl] values at the drop coalescence crossover points. Abstract

We describe the effect of subphase pH on the stability of insoluble monolayers of a range of ionisable materials. Maximum stability occurs at approximately half ionisation of the film. We discuss measurements of the transfer ratio and dynamic contact angle for the deposition of docosanoic acid monolayers onto mica as a function of subphase pH in the absence of added electrolyte. Deposition changes from Z-type of Y to no net deposition as the pH is increased. In general, deposition occurs on OUT strokes when the contact angle is <90°, and on IN strokes when the contact angle is >90°. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In systems containing oil, water and surfactant, the penetration of oil into the chain region of the surfactant monolayer governs, in part, the system behaviour. For example, the limiting area per molecule for Aerosol-OT in saturated monolayers at the oil-water interface depends markedly on the alkane chain length. This, and other results, are discussed in connection with the occurrence of low oil-water interfacial tensions and microemulsion inversion from Winsor I-III-II systems. We also present new data for the effects of aliphatic remove oils on the cloud points of micellar solutions of nonionic surfactants, and discuss the probable locus of oil solubilisation. In connection with an attempt to determine alkane penetration into surfactant monolayers quantitatively, we report preliminary data for mixed films of oil and cationic surfactant at the air-water interface.
