In this work, we present a microscopic quantum theory that elucidates the nonlinear and nonperturbative optical response of biased bilayer graphene subjected to bichromatic strong laser fields. This response is analyzed using a four-band Hamiltonian derived from \textit{ab initio} calculations. For the laser-stimulated dynamics, we employ structure gauge-invariant evolutionary equations to accurately describe the evolution of the single-particle density matrix across the entire Brillouin zone. The resonant generation of electron-hole pairs by the high-frequency component of the field, combined with the induction of high-order harmonic generation and high-order wave mixing by the strong low-frequency field component, leads to significant alterations in the resulting spectra. These changes are driven by the effects of Berry curvature and the shift vector, which modify the relative contributions of interband and intraband channels, thereby fundamentally reshaping the radiation spectra at high-order frequency multiplication. The numerical results are further supported by approximate analytical calculations, demonstrating that high-order wave mixing can be modeled using the classical trajectory analysis of electron-hole pairs, with Berry curvature and the shift vector significantly influencing the saddle-point equations., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

This article aims to study the linear and nonlinear optical response of inversion symmetric graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in the presence of on-site disorder or vacancies. The presence of disorder or vacancy breaks the special inversion symmetry leading to the emergence of intense Hall-type anomalous harmonics. This phenomenon is attributed to the intrinsic time-reversal symmetry-breaking in quantum dots with a pseudo-relativistic Hamiltonian, even in the absence of an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the effects induced by disorder or vacancy have a distinct impact on the optical response of GQDs. In the linear response, we observe significant Hall conductivity. In the presence of an intense laser field, we observe the radiation of strong anomalous odd and even-order harmonics already for relatively small levels of disorder or mono-vacancy. The both disorder and vacancy lift the degeneracy of states, thereby creating new channels for interband transitions and enhancing the emission of near-cutoff high-harmonic signals., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

In this work the extreme nonlinear optical response of a giant fullerene molecule C$_{240}$ in strong laser field is studied. The investigation of high-order harmonic generation in such quantum nanostructure is presented modeling the C$_{240}$ molecule and its interaction with the laser field in the scope of the tight-binding mean-field approach. Electron-electron interaction is modeled by the parametrized Ohno potentail, which takes into account long-range Coulomb interaction. The essential role of many body Coulomb interaction in determining of harmonics intensities is demonstrated. We also consider vacancy-deffected molecule C$_{240}$. The presence of a single vacancy breaks the icosahedral symmetry leading to the emergence of intense even-order harmonics. We examine the dependence of moderate harmonics on laser frequency that shows the multiphoton resonant nature of high harmonics generation. This paper focuses on investigating high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in graphene quantum dots (GQDs) under intense near-infrared laser fields. To model the GQD and its interaction with the laser field, we utilize a mean-field approach. Our analysis of the HHG power spectrum reveals fine structures and a noticeable enhancement in cutoff harmonics due to the long-range correlations. We also demonstrate the essential role of Coulomb interaction in determining of harmonics intensities and cutoff position. Unlike atomic HHG, where the cutoff energy is proportional to the pump wave intensity, in GQDs the cutoff energy scales with the square root of the field strength amplitude. A detailed time-frequency analysis of the entire range of HHG spectrum is presented using a wavelet transform. The analysis reveals intricate details of the spectral and temporal fine structures of HHG, offering insights into the various HHG mechanisms in GQDs., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures

The objective of this article is to investigate the profound nonlinear optical response exhibited by inversion symmetric fullerene molecules under the influence of different types of disorders described by the Anderson model. Our aim is to elucidate the localization effects on the spectra of high harmonic generation in such molecules. We show that the disorder-induced effects are imprinted onto molecules' high-harmonic spectrum. Specifically, we observe a presence of strong even-order harmonic signals already for relatively small disorders. The odd-order harmonics intrinsic for disorder-free systems are generally robust to minor disorders. Both diagonal and off-diagonal disorders lift the degeneracy of states, opening up new channels for interband transitions, leading to the enhancement of the high-harmonic emission. The second harmonic signal has a special behavior depending on the disorder strength. Specifically in the case of diagonal disorder, the second harmonic intensity exhibits a quadratic scaling with the disorder strength, which enables the usage of the harmonic spectrum as a tool in measuring the type and the strength of a disorder., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We consider coherent dynamics of graphene charged carriers exposed to an intense few-cycle linearly polarized laser pulse. The results, obtained by solving the generalized semiconductor Bloch equations numerically in the Hartree-Fock approximation, taking into account many-body Coulomb interaction, demonstrate strong dependence of the valley polarization on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP), which is interpolated by the simple sinusoidal law. Then we consider harmonic generation in multi-cycle laser field by graphene preliminary exposed to an intense few-cycle laser pulse. We show that the second harmonic's intensity is a robust observable quantity that provides a gauge of CEP for pulse durations up to two optical cycles, corresponding to 40 $\mathrm{fs}$ at the wavelength of 6.2 $\mathrm{\mu m}$., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

In this paper, the nonlinear interaction of Weyl semimetal (WSM) with a strong driving electromagnetic wave-field is investigated. In the scope of the structure-gauge invariant low-energy nonlinear electrodynamic theory, the polarization-resolved high-order harmonic generation spectra in WSM are analyzed. The obtained results show that the spectra in WSM are completely different compared to 2D graphene case. In particular, at the non-collinear arrangement of the electric and Weyl nodes' momentum separation vectors, an anomalous harmonics are generated which are polarised perpendicular to the pump wave electric field. The intensities of anomalous harmonics are quadratically dependent on the momentum space separation of the Weyl nodes. If the right and the left Weyl fermions are merged, we have a 4-component trivial massless Dirac fermion and, as a consequence, the anomalous harmonics vanish. In contrast to the anomalous harmonics, the intensities of normal harmonics do not depend on the Weyl nodes' momentum separation vector, and the harmonics spectra resemble the picture for a massless 3D Dirac fermion., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The disclosure of basic nonlinear optical properties of graphene-like nanostructures with correlated electron-hole nonlinear dynamics over a wide range of frequencies and pump field intensities is of great importance for both graphene fundamental physics and for expected novel applications of 2D hexagonal nanostructures in extreme nonlinear optics. In the current paper, the nonlinear interaction of 2D hexagonal nanostructures with the bichromatic infrared driving field taking into account many-body Coulomb interaction is investigated. Numerical investigation in the scope of the Bloch equations within the Houston basis that take into account $e-e$ and $e-h$ interactions in the Hartree-Fock approximation reveals significant excitonic effects in the high harmonic generation process in 2D hexagonal nanostructures such as graphene and silicene. It is shown that due to the correlated electron-hole nonlinear dynamics around the van Hove singularity, spectral caustics in the high harmonic generation spectrum are induced near the saddle point excitonic resonances., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

High-order frequency mixing in graphene using a two-color radiation field consisting of the fundamental and the second harmonic fields of an ultrashort linearly polarized laser pulse is studied. It is shown that the harmonics originated from the interband transitions are efficiently generated in the case of the orthogonally polarized two-color field. In this case, the generated high-harmonics are stronger than those obtained in the parallel polarization case by more than two orders of magnitude. This is in sharp contrast with the atomic and semiconductor systems, where parallel polarization case is more preferable. The physical origin of this enhancement is also deduced from the three-step semi-classical electron-hole collision model, extended to graphene with pseudo-relativistic energy dispersion. In particular, we discuss the influence of the many particle Coulomb interaction on the HHG process within dynamical Hartree-Fock approximation. Our analysis shows that in all cases we have an overall enhancement of the HHG signal compared with the free-charged carrier model due to the electron-hole attractive interaction., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Using dynamical Hartree-Fock mean-field theory, we study the high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the fullerene molecules C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$ under strong pump wave driving. We consider a strong-field regime and show that the output harmonic radiation exhibits multiple plateaus, whose borders are defined by the molecular excitonic lines and cutoff energies within each plateau scale linearly with the field strength amplitude. In contrast to atomic cases for the fullerene molecule, with the increase of the pump wave photon energy the cutoff harmonic energy is increased. We also show that with the increase of the electron-electron interaction energy overall the HHG rate is suppressed. We demonstrate that the C$_{70}$ molecule shows richer HHG spectra and a stronger high-harmonic intensity than the C$_{60}$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Microscopic nonlinear quantum theory of interaction of coherent electromagnetic radiation with gapped bilayer graphene is developed. The Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix is solved numerically at the multiphoton excitation regime. The developed theory of interaction of charged carriers with strong driving wave field is valid near the Dirac points of the Brillouin zone. We consider the harmonic generation process in the nonadiabatic regime of interaction when the Keldysh parameter is of the order of unity. On the basis of numerical solutions, we examine the rates of odd and even high-harmonics at the particle-hole annihilation in the field of a strong pump wave of arbitrary polarization. Obtained results show that the gapped bilayer graphene can serve as an effective medium for generation of even and odd high harmonics in the THz and far infrared domains of frequencies., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, a possible way to achieve lasing from THz to extreme UV domain due to stimulated scattering of graphene plasmons on the free electrons is considered. The analytical-quantitative description of the proposed FEL scheme is based on the self-consistent set of the Maxwell--Vlasov equations. We study the downconversion as well as the upconversion. It is shown that the coherent downconversion of infrared radiation to THz one can be achieved using a source of very non-relativistic electrons at the resonant coupling with the graphene plasmons. Due to the strongly confined graphene plasmons, the upconversion of mid-infrared to extreme UV radiation can be achieved with the mildly relativistic electron beams. A new nonlinear scheme of high harmonics generation in a wide class of time-reversal invariant materials with broken spatial inversion symmetry (where recently the nonlinear Hall effect has been established) due to the nontrivial topology of bands is proposed. A microscopic quasiclassical theory describing the nonperturbative optical response of pseudo-relativistic electrons with nonzero Berry curvature of bands to a strong laser field is developed. We analyze the harmonic content of the induced current and show that one can decouple induced laser harmonics solely by the Berry curvature of bands. The generation of high-order harmonics in quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) initiated by intense coherent radiation is investigated. A microscopic theory describing the extreme nonlinear optical response of GNRs is developed. The closed set of differential equations for the single-particle density matrix at the GNR-strong laser field multiphoton interaction is solved numerically. Single layers of hexagonal two-dimensional nanostructures such as graphene, silicene, and germanene exhibit large carrier Fermi velocities and, consequently, large light-matter coupling strength making these materials promising elements for nano-opto-electronics. Although these materials are centrosymmetric, the spatial dispersion turns out to be quite large allowing the second-order nonlinear response of such materials to be comparable to the non-centrosymmetric 2D ones. The second-order response of massless Dirac fermions has been extensively studied, however a general approach correct over the full Brillouin zone is lacking so far. To complete this gap, in the current paper we develop a general quantum-mechanical theory of the in-plane second-order nonlinear response beyond the Dirac cone approximation and applicable to the full Brillouin zone of the hexagonal tight-binding nanostructures. With the help of numerical simulations in microscopic nonlinear quantum theory of coherent electromagnetic radiation interaction with a gapped bilayer graphene, we find out the optimal values of pump wave intensity, graphene temperature, and energy gap induced by a constant electric field for practically significant third order harmonic coherent emission. The Liouville-von Neumann equation is treated numerically for the third harmonic generation in multiphoton excitation regime near the Dirac points of the Brillouin zone. We examine the rates of the third harmonic at the particle-hole annihilation in the field of a strong pump wave of linear polarization for practically real/optimal parameters of a considering system. The obtained results show that by choosing the optimal values of the main characteristic parameters, a gapped bilayer graphene can serve as an effective medium for generation of the third harmonic at room temperatures in the terahertz and far infrared domains., Comment: 7 figures

Multiphoton interaction of coherent electromagnetic radiation with 2D metallic carriers confined on the surface of the 3D topological insulator is considered. A microscopic theory describing the nonlinear interaction of a strong wave and metallic carriers with many-body Coulomb interaction is developed. The set of integrodifferential equations for the interband polarization and carrier occupation distribution is solved numerically. Multiphoton excitation of Fermi-Dirac sea of 2D massless carriers is considered for a THz pump wave. A comprehensive collection of results on longitudinal double-spin asymmetries is presented for charged pions and kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons on the proton and deuteron, based on the full HERMES data set. The dependence of the asymmetries on hadron transverse momentum and azimuthal angle extends the sensitivity to the flavor structure of the nucleon beyond the distribution functions accessible in the collinear framework. No strong dependence on those variables is observed. In addition, the hadron charge-difference asymmetry is presented, which under certain model assumptions provides access to the helicity distributions of valence quarks.

The collective decay of excitons from initial Bose-Einstein condensate state is investigated theoretically. As practically more interesting case we consider excitons of the yellow series in the semiconductor cuprous oxide where we have collective photon and phonon assisted decay of excitons. It is shown that because of intrinsic instability of recoilless two-boson decay of Bose-Einstein condensate, the spontaneously emitted bosonic pairs are amplified leading to an exponential buildup of a macroscopic population into the certain modes. The collective decay rate has a nonlinear dependence on the excitonic density being comparable or larger than Auger recombination loss rate up to the high densities, which makes obtainable its observation. Microscopic quantum theory of nonlinear stimulated scattering of 2D Dirac particles in doped graphene on Coulomb field of impurity ions at the presence of an external strong coherent electromagnetic radiation is developed. We consider high Fermi energies and low frequencies (actually terahertz radiation) to exclude the valence electrons excitations. The Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density matrix is solved analytically, taking into account the interaction of electrons with the scattering potential in the Born approximation. With the help of this solution, the nonlinear inverse-bremsstrahlung absorption rate for a grand canonical ensemble of 2D Dirac fermions is calculated. Relativistic quantum theory of induced scattering of 2D Dirac particles by electrostatic field of impurity ion (in the Born approximation) in the doped graphene at the presence of an external electromagnetic radiation field (actually terahertz radiation, to exclude the valence electrons excitations at high Fermi energies) has been developed. We consider multiphoton dynamics of a quantum system composed of a three-state atom (a qutrit) and a single-mode photonic field in the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes, when the coupling strength is comparable to or larger than the oscillator energy scale. We assume a qutrit to be in a polar-$\Lambda $ configuration in which two lower levels have mean dipole moments. We study nonlinear optical response of Landau quantized graphene to an intense electromagnetic wave. In particular, we consider high harmonic generation process. It is shown that one can achieve efficient generation of high harmonics with strong radiation fields -- when the work of the wave electric field on the magnetic length is larger than pump photon energy. We consider harmonics generation and wave-mixing by two-color multi photon resonant excitation of three-level atoms/molecules in strong laser fields. The coherent part of the spectra corresponding to multicolor harmonics generation is investigated. The obtained analytical results on the basis of generalized rotating wave approximation are in a good agreement with numerical calculations. We study nonlinear optical response of graphene in the quantum Hall regime to an intense laser pulse. In particular, we consider harmonic generation process. We demonstrate that the generalized magneto-optical conductivity of graphene on the harmonics of a strong pump laser radiation has a characteristic Hall plateaus feature. The plateaus heights depend on the laser intensity and broadening of Landau levels, so that are not quantized exactly. This nonlinear effect remains robust against the significant broadening of Landau levels. In this paper conceptual points regarding electrons elastic (Kapitza-Dirac effect) and inelastic diffraction effect on the different type slowed electromagnetic wave structures/light gratings are considered. Hard exclusive electroproduction of $\omega$ mesons is studied with the HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen target. The amplitudes of five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole contribution. We consider nonlinear interaction of superpower laser pulses of relativistic intensities with nanolayers and solid-plasma-targets towards the production of high energy-density electron bunches along with nuclear radiation (hard $% \gamma $-quanta and positron fluxes). It is shown that petawatt lasers are capable of producing via two-target scheme high density field free electron/positron bunches and substantial amounts of $\gamma $-quanta with energies up to $200$ MeV. Bose-Einstein correlations of like-sign charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic electron and positron scattering are studied in the HERMES experiment using nuclear targets of $^1$H, $^2$H, $^3$He, $^4$He, N, Ne, Kr, and Xe. A Gaussian approach is used to parametrize a two-particle correlation function determined from events with at least two charged hadrons of the same sign charge. This correlation function is compared to two different empirical distributions that do not include the Bose-Einstein correlations. One distribution is derived from unlike-sign hadron pairs, and the second is derived from mixing like-sign pairs from different events. The extraction procedure used simulations incorporating the experimental setup in order to correct the results for spectrometer acceptance effects, and was tested using the distribution of unlike-sign hadron pairs. Clear signals of Bose-Einstein correlations for all target nuclei without a significant variation with the nuclear target mass are found. Also, no evidence for a dependence on the invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system is found when the results are compared to those of previous experiments.

Nonlinear dynamics of establishment of electron-hole coherent superpositions states in graphene by multiphoton resonant excitation of interband transitions in laser fields is considered. A new method for generation of quasimonoenergetic and low emittance fast ion/nuclei bunches of solid densities from nanotargets by two counterpropagating laser pulses of ultrarelativistic intensities is proposed, based on the threshold phenomenon of particles "reflection" due to induced nonlinear Compton scattering. The earlier search at HERMES for narrow baryon states excited in quasi-real photoproduction, decaying through the channel $pK_S^0\rightarrow p\pi^+\pi^-$, has been extended with improved decay-particle reconstruction, more advanced particle identification, and increased event samples. The structure observed earlier at an invariant mass of 1528 MeV shifts to 1522 MeV and the statistical significance drops to about 2$\sigma$ for data taken with a deuterium target. The number of events above background is $68_{-31}^{+98}\text{(stat)}\pm13\text{(sys)}$. No such structure is observed in the hydrogen data set.

Exclusive electroproduction of $\omega$ mesons on unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets is studied in the kinematic region of Q$^2$>1.0 GeV$^2$, 3.0 GeV < W < 6.3 GeV, and -t'< 0.2 GeV$^2$. Results on the angular distribution of the $\omega$ meson, including its decay products, are presented. The data were accumulated with the HERMES forward spectrometer during the 1996-2007 running period using the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron or positron beam of HERA. The determination of the virtual-photon longitudinal-to-transverse cross-section ratio reveals that a considerable part of the cross section arises from transversely polarized photons. Spin density matrix elements are presented in projections of Q$^2$ or -t'. Violation of s-channel helicity conservation is observed for some of these elements. A sizable contribution from unnatural-parity-exchange amplitudes is found and the phase shift between those amplitudes that describe transverse $\omega$ production by longitudinal and transverse virtual photons, $\gamma^{*}_{L} \to \omega_{T}$ and $\gamma^{*}_{T} \to \omega_{T}$, is determined for the first time. A hierarchy of helicity amplitudes is established, which mainly means that the unnatural-parity-exchange amplitude describing the $\gamma^*_T \to \omega_T$ transition dominates over the two natural-parity-exchange amplitudes describing the $\gamma^*_L \to \omega_L$ and $\gamma^*_T \to \omega_T$ transitions, with the latter two being of similar magnitude. Good agreement is found between the HERMES proton data and results of a pQCD-inspired phenomenological model that includes pion-pole contributions, which are of unnatural parity., Comment: "Erratum version", e.g., includes the corrected version of Figure 6, to be published in "Erratum to: Spin density matrix elements in exclusive omega electroproduction on 1H and 2H targets at 27.5 GeV beam energy". The transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons was measured in inclusive quasireal photoproduction for various target nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon. The data were obtained by the HERMES experiment at HERA using the 27.6 GeV lepton beam and nuclear gas targets internal to the lepton storage ring. The polarization observed is positive for light target nuclei and is compatible with zero for krypton and xenon., Comment: final version to be published in Phys. Rev. D (in press)

An earlier extraction from the HERMES experiment of the polarization-averaged parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon has been reevaluated using final data on the multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering obtained with a kinematically more comprehensive method of correcting for experimental effects. General features of the distribution are confirmed, but the rise at low x is less pronounced than previously reported.

Single-spin asymmetries were investigated in inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons from transversely polarized protons at the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries were studied as a function of the azimuthal angle $\psi$ about the beam direction between the target-spin direction and the hadron production plane, the transverse hadron momentum relative to the direction of the incident beam, and the Feynman variable $x_F$. The $\sin(\psi)$ amplitudes are positive for positive pions and kaons, slightly negative for negative pions and consistent with zero for negative kaons, with particular transverse-momentum but weak $x_F$ dependences. Especially large asymmetries are observed for two small subsamples of events, where also the scattered electron was recorded by the spectrometer., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The beam-helicity asymmetry in associated electroproduction of real photons, $ep\to e\gamma \pi N$, in the $\Delta$(1232)-resonance region is measured using the longitudinally polarized HERA positron beam and an unpolarized hydrogen target. Azimuthal Fourier amplitudes of this asymmetry are extracted separately for two channels, $ep\to e\gamma \pi^0 p$ and $ep\to e\gamma \pi^+ n$, from a data set collected with a recoil detector. We study the generalized Jaynes-Cummings model of quantum optics at the inversion-symmetry-breaking and in the ultrastrong coupling regime. With the help of a generalized multiphoton rotating-wave approximation, we study the stationary solutions of the Schr\"{o}dinger equation. It is shown that the problem is reduced to resonant interaction of two position-displaced harmonic oscillators. Explicit expressions for the eigenstates and eigenvalues of generalized Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian are presented. We exemplify our physical model with analytical and numerical considerations regarding collapse and revivals of the initial population of a two-level system and photon distribution function at the direct multiphoton resonant coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The nonlinear absorption of laser radiation of relativistic intensities in the underdense plasma by a mechanism of stimulated bremsstrahlung of electrons on the ions/nuclei is investigated in the low frequency approximation. Multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering are presented for each charge state of \pi^\pm and K^\pm mesons. The data were collected by the HERMES experiment at the HERA storage ring using 27.6 GeV electron and positron beams incident on a hydrogen or deuterium gas target. The results are presented as a function of the kinematic quantities x_B, Q^2, z, and P_h\perp. They represent a unique data set for identified hadrons that will significantly enhance our understanding of the fragmentation of quarks into final-state hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering.

The beam-helicity asymmetry in exclusive electroproduction of real photons by the longitudinally polarized HERA positron beam scattering off an unpolarized hydrogen target is measured at HERMES. The asymmetry arises from deeply virtual Compton scattering and its interference with the Bethe--Heitler process. Azimuthal amplitudes of the beam-helicity asymmetry are extracted from a data sample consisting of $ep\rightarrow ep\gamma$ events with detection of all particles in the final state including the recoiling proton. The installation of a recoil detector, while reducing the acceptance of the experiment, allows the elimination of background from $ep\rightarrow eN\pi\gamma$ events, which was estimated to contribute an average of about 12% to the signal in previous HERMES publications. The removal of this background from the present data sample is shown to increase the magnitude of the leading asymmetry amplitude by 0.054 +/- 0.016 to -0.328 +/- 0.027 (stat.) +/- 0.045 (syst.).
