This study investigated the potential use of fibrous sludge wastes (FSW) from a paper mill for particleboard production.The FSW containing wood fibers and inorganic materials was obtained from a commercial paper mill producing recycled paper from waste papers. After collection, the FSW was oven-dried and pulverized with a laboratory mill. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties, fiber dimension, ash content, klason lignin content. and holocellulose content of the fibers of FSW were determined. The results showed that the addition of FSW to the surface and core layers of the particleboard greatly improved its thickness swelling and water absorption capacity compared with the control particleboard. Similarly, the bending strength, bending modulus, internal bond strength, and screw withdrawal resistance of the particleboard was improved after the addition of FSW to its surface layers. According to the test results, the particleboards are composed of 70% wood particles in the core layers, whereas the 5% wood particles plus 25% FSW (by weight) in the surface layers possessed the optimum physical and mechanical properties. Bilim ve teknolojideki gelişmelerin eğitime entegrasyonu ile ortaya çıkan STEM; Science(Bilim), Technology(Teknoloji), Engineering(Mühendislik) ve Mathematics(Matematik) alanlarının ilk harflerinden oluşan multidisipliner bir öğrenim yaklaşımıdır. STEM multidisipliner bir öğrenim yaklaşımı olmakla beraber kodlama becerilerinin de içerisinde yer aldığı 21. yüzyıl becerilerinin gelişimine katkı sağlayan bir eğitim yaklaşımıdır. Bu araştırma üstün yetenekli öğrencilerin kodlamaya karşı tutumuna STEM destekli robotik kodlama etkinliklerinin etkisini gözlemlemeyi amaçlamıştır. Araştırma 2019-2020 eğitim-öğretim yılında Malatya İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü’ne bağlı Malatya Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi’nde 6. 7. ve 8. sınıfta öğrenim görmekte olup STEM’le Genç Mühendis Beyinler 3 etkinliğine katılan üstün yetenekli öğrencilerle (N=34) gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma yöntemi olarak nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden yararlanılmış olup araştırmada nicel yöntemler içerisinde yer alan tek gruplu ön test - son test deneysel desen modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada ilk olarak STEM destekli robotik kodlama etkinlikleri planlanmış olup sonrasında alanyazında bulunan “Ortaokul Öğrencileri İçin Kodlamaya Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği” öğrencilere uygulanmıştır. Bir haftalık süreyle gerçekleştirilen etkinliklerden nicel veriler elde edilmiş ve bu veriler SPSS paket programı kullanılarak 0,05 anlamlılık seviyesinde değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Öğrencilerin kodlamaya yönelik tutumunda farklılaşmanın gerçekleşme durumu etkinlik öncesinde ve etkinlik sonrasında uygulanan tutum ölçeği ile tespit edilmiştir. Bu araştırmada İstanbul İli Kadıköy İlçesinde görev yapan öğretmenlerin Hizmet İçi Eğitim (HİE) ihtiyacı düzeylerinin cinsiyete, yaşa, hizmet yılına, branşa, hizmet içi eğitimlerine katılım sayısına ve hizmet içi eğitimlere Çağrı Kriterine göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde herhangi bir değişiklik olup olmadığının tespit edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini İstanbul İli Kadıköy İlçesinde görev yapan öğretmenler oluşturmaktadır. Veriler, tesadüfî örnekleme (convenience sampling) yöntemi ile ulaşılan 145 öğretmenden toplanmıştır. Öğretmenlerin hizmet içi eğitim ihtiyaçlarını belirlemek için ölçme aracı olarak Gökmenoğlu (2012)'nun geliştirdiği hizmet içi eğitim anketi uygulanmıştır. Bu anket 12 alt boyut ve 69 madde içeren 5 seçenekli Likert türü bir ölçektir. Araştırma öğretmenlerin hizmet içi eğitimin gereksinimlerini saptama amaçlı bir araştırmadır, betimsel tarama yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre öğretmenlerin hizmet içi eğitim tercihlerinde cinsiyet, branş ve hizmet içi eğitim tercih durumuna göre farklılık yoktur. Öğretmenlerin hizmet içi eğitim tercihlerinde yaş, hizmet yılı ve hizmet içi eğitime katılma sayısına göre anlamlı farklılıklar mevcuttur. Öğretmenler hizmet içi eğitimlerin Eylül ve Haziran ayı seminer dönemlerinde yapılmasını tercih etmekte, diğer zamanlarda hizmet içi eğitimlere katılmayı tercih etmemektedirler, hizmet içi eğitimlerin görev yaptıkları ilde olmasını tercih etmekte, uzaktan eğitim ve başka ilde yapılması konusunda kararsızlık sergilemektedirler, hizmet içi eğitimlerin akademisyenler tarafından verilmesini tercih etmekte, Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı görevlileri, Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı müfettişleri ve okul yöneticilerinin hizmet içi eğitim verip vermemeleri hususunda kararsızlık sergilemektedirler, hizmet içi eğitim tercihlerinde kararsızlık düzeyinde bulunmakla birlikte en fazla Rehberlik ve Özel Eğitim alanında, daha sonra sırasıyla, Kişisel Gelişim, Teknoloji ve Bilgisayar Kullanımı, Öğretmenlik Alan bilgisi, Öğretmenlik Meslek Bilgisi, Ulusal Sınavlar, Sosyal Bilinç Eğitimleri ve en düşük düzeyde de İletişim ve Sosyal Becerilerle ilgili hizmet içi eğitim tercih etmektedirler. In this study, the number of İn-service education (HIE) requirements of the teachers who served in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul are based on gender, age, service year, branch, participation in in-service trainings and in-service trainings according to the call criteria It is aimed to determine whether there is any statistically significant change. The universe of the research is composed of teachers who serve in Kadıköy district of Istanbul. The data was collected from 145 teachers who were reached by random sampling (convenience sampling) method. In-service training questionnaire developed by Gökmenoğlu (2012) was implemented as a measurement tool to determine the teachers ' in-service training needs. This survey is a Likert type scale of 5 options with 12 sub-dimensions and 69 items. Research is a research aimed at determining the needs of teachers in-service education, conducted by descriptive screening method. According to the research results, there is no difference in the teachers 'in-service education preferences according to the preference of gender, branch and in-service education. There are significant differences in the number of teachers' in-service training preferences, depending on age, service year and participation in in-service education. Mevcut kaynakların daha verimli bir şekilde değerlendirilmesi ve zamanla ortaya çıkan yeni ihtiyaçların uygun maliyetlerle karşılanması için kompozit malzeme üretimi her geçen gün artmaktadır. Kompozit malzeme alanındaki yeni ürünlerden bir tanesi de ahşap-plastik kompozitlerdir (WPC). WPC üretiminde, kompozit malzemeyi oluşturan plastik matrisi türü, kullanılan dolgu maddeleri ve üretimin gerçekleştirilmesinde kolaylık sağlayan katkı maddelerinin son ürünün özellikleri üzerine etkilerinin bilinmesi son derece önemlidir.Ahşap plastik kompozitleri, kompozit endüstrisinde hızla büyüyen bir sektör ve yeni bir malzeme sınıfı olmuştur. Ahşap plastik kompozitler odun unu, termoplastik ve küçük miktarlarda proses katkılarının karışımı ile genelde ekstrüzyon prosesinde gerçekleştirilir. Ahşap plastik kompozitleri deck, dış kaplama malzemeleri, bina içi paneller, cam çerçeve kaplaması, otomobil iç kısım parçaları ve diğer birçok değişik üründe kullanılmaktadır. Ahşap plastik kompozitleri çoğunlukla polipropilen ve polietilen kullanılarak üretilir. Dolgu maddesi olarak odun unu, şeker kamışı, mısır koçanı, saman (buğday sapı) ve öğütülmüş fındıkkabuğu gibi değişik maddeler dolgu olarak kullanılır. Bu dolgular ucuzluğu, kolay bulunabilirliği, makinede düşük aşınma ve proses ekipmanlarına daha az zarar vermesi nedeniyle cam elyaf, talk ve kalsiyum karbonat gibi diğer dolgu malzemeleri ile kıyaslandığında daha uygundur.Ahşap hammaddesinin hafifliği, ısıyı iyi iletmemesi ve lifsel yapıda olması gibi olumlu özellikleri ile plastik maddelerin suya dayanıklılık, biyolojik dayanıklılık ve yapışma özelliklerinin kombine edilmesiyle tek başına ahşap ve plastikte bulunmayan özellikler, WPC'de bir araya getirilmektedir.Ahşap plastik kompozitler ahşap panellere göre düşük su alması, boyutsal stabilite, biyolojik bozunmaya karşı dayanıklılık gibi avantajlara sahiptir. Ahşap ile plastik arasındaki bağ tipik olarak zayıftır; ahşabın suyu çekici ve plastiğinde su itici özelliğinden dolayı ahşap ve plastik fazları arasında gerilim transferinde problem olmaktadır. Bu problemin bir çözümü olarak plastik ile ahşap arasındaki gerilme transferini iyileştiren ve yüzeyler arası köprü kurabilen uyumlaştırıcılar kullanılmaktadır.Odun unu tanecik boyutları genelde 30 ile 80 mesh arasında kullanılmaktadır. Ahşap plastik kompozitler sadece ahşap ve plastikten oluşmamaktadır. Bu kompozitler aynı zamanda küçük miktarlarda proses ve performans etkileyici katkı maddeleri de içermektedir. Bununla birlikte bağlama ajanları, ısı stabilizatörleri, boya pigmentleri, iç ve dış yağlayıcılar, mantar önleyiciler ve köpük ajanları da kullanılabilmektedir.Bu çalışmada, poliolefinler olarak adlandırılan ve dünyada en çok kullanım alanına sahip olan yüksek yoğunluklu polietilen (HDPE) ve polipropilen (PP) kullanılarak WPC üretilmiştir. Tez çalışmasında, bir iğne yapraklı (Karaçam) ve iki geniş yapraklı (Doğu Kayını, Karakavak) ağaç türleri kullanılmıştır. WPC üretimi esnasında hidrofobik yapıdaki plastik ile hidrofilik yapıdaki odun unu arasındaki bağlanmayı sağlamak amacıyla maleik anhidrit ile muamele edilmiş polietilen (MAPE) ve polipropilen (MAPP) ve üretimi kolaylaştırmak amacıyla EBS ve AKROPAN 4590 PX kullanılmıştır.Hazırlanan 10500 adet deney örneği üzerinde; yoğunluk (ASTM D 792), kalınlığına şişme oranı(ASTM D 570-98), su alma oranı (ASTM D 570-98), statik eğilme direnci (ASTM D 790), eğilmede elastikiyet modülü (ASTM D 790), çekme direnci (ASTM D 638-99), vida tutma direnci (ASTM D1037 - 06a), sertlik (janka) direnci (ASTM D1037 -06a), pürüzlülük (DIN 4768), yanma performansı (ISO 13927), TGA, UV hızlandırılmış yaşlandırma (ASTM G 154 ve ASTM G 151?06), mantar etkilerine karşı dayanıklılık (ASTM D-1413) esaslarına uyularak belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen bütün sonuçlar istatistik analiz yapılarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bu amaçla çoklu varyans analizi yapılmıştır. Diğer testlerde ağaç türünün bir etkisi bulunmamıştır. Yanma performansı, UV hızlandırılmış yaşlandırma, mantar etkilerine karşı dayanıklılık özelliklerinde polietilen karışımlar daha iyi özellik göstermiş olup diğer testlerde polipropilen karışımlar daha iyi özellik göstermiştir. Polietilen karışımların yoğunluğu daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Odun unu oranı arttıkça eğilmede elastikiyet modülü, sertlik, yanma performansı özelliklerinde iyileşme görülmekte diğer özelliklerde ise bir miktar düşme görülmektedir. Yoğunluk değeri, odun unu oranı arttıkça artmaktadır. %3 Katkı malzemesi kullanılmasının tüm WPC özellikleri üzerine olumlu sonuçlar verdiği görülmektedir.WPC kullanımı yaygınlaştırılmalı ve üretimi teşvik edilmelidir. Bu tip malzemelerin kullanım yerinde görülen özelliklerinin üretim prosesi üzerinde yapılan değişikliklerle iyileştirilmesi suretiyle kullanım performansları artacak; sürdürülebilir hammadde kullanımına katkı sağlayacaktır. The manufacturing of composite materials are increasing with time due to need for efficient use of present resources and responding rising new necessities with appropriate cost. Wood-plastic composites (WPC) are one of the newest new products in the composite field. During the manufacturing of WPC, knowledge regarding the type of plastic material, type of filler and the amount of additives used for the ease of processing is extremely important to best determine the properties of the final production.Wood/plastic composites (WPC) are relatively new class of materials and one of the fastest growing sectors in the wood based composites industry. WPCs are normally made from a mixture of wood flour, thermoplastic, and small amounts of process and property modifiers through an extrusion process. WPCs are used as outdoor decking materials, interior door panels, window moldings, interior automobile parts, and a large variety of other molded products. The most commonly used plastics for WPC manufacturing are polyethylene and polypropylene. Various wood fibers, and even cellulosic wastes such as ground wood waste, bagasse, corncobs, and wheat straw, one used as fillers for plastics. Wood compares favorably with other available fillers such as glass fibers for plastics since it is inexpensive, readily available, and causes lower machine, talk, CaCo3 and damage of processing equipment.WPC is formed both good properties of wood materials such as lightness and low heat conductivity, and plastic materials such as water resistance, decay resistance, adhesive on properties.WPCs could have many property advantages over wood panels, such as lower water absorbance, lower thickness swelling, and more durability against bio deterioration. However, the interface between the wood and the plastic is typically weak and fails to transfer stress between the phases because wood is hydrophilic and thermoplastic while plastic is hydrophobic. Consequently, the full strength of the wood is unavailable to reinforce the plastic. One solution to this problem is a compatibilizer that bridges the interface and improves the stress transfer between wood and plastic.Common species used include pine in WPC manufacturing and maple. Typical particle sizes are 30 to 80 mesh. Adding wood to unfilled plastic can greatly stiffen the plastic but often makes it more brittle. Most commercial WPC products are considerably less stiff than solid wood. Adding wood fibers rather than wood flour increases mechanical properties such as tensile and bending strength, elongation, and unnoticed Izod impact energy. However, processing difficulties, such as feeding and metering low bulk density fibers, have limited the use of fibers in WPCs.In this thesis, one of coniferous (Pinus nigra) and (Fagus orientalis L., Populus nigra) wood species are utilized deciduous. In this study, it is aimed to manufacture WPCs with most commonly utilized HDPE and PP which collectively known as poliolephinesDuring manufacturing process, maleic anhydrite grafted polypropylene (MAPP) and polyethylene (MAPE) were utilized to improve the adhesion between the hydrophobic plastic and hydrophilic wheat wood flour and EBS and AKROPAN 4590 PX to ease processing. Thus, the effect of fillers, type of plastic and additives (modifiers) on the usage performance of WPCs were investigated.The density (ASTM D 792), thickness swelling (ASTM D 570-98), water absorption (ASTM D 570-98), static bending strength (ASTM D 790), modulus of elasticity (ASTM D 790), Tensile Strength (ASTM D 638-99), screw holding strength (ASTM D1037 - 06a), Hardness (Janka) resistance (ASTM D1037 - 06a), roughness (DIN 4768), burning the (ISO 13 927), TGA, UV accelerated weathering (ASTM G 154 and ASTM G 151-06, fungal resistance (ASTM D-1413) were determined in due course with a total of 10500 prepared samples. Raw data obtained in the experiments was statistically analyzed with multiple variances. Thus, effects of process parameters on the composite materials were obtained.The density (0,919 gr/cm3 to 1,087 gr/cm3), thickness swelling (1 day % 0,106 to % 1,268, 3 day % 0,280 to % 1,960, 30 day % 0,506 to % 4,915), water absorption (1 day % 0,045 to % 1,609, 3 day % 0,137 to % 2,793, 30 day % 0,319 to % 8,190), static bending strength (30,610 n/mm2 to 66,065 n/mm2), modulus of elasticity (2584,812 n/mm2 to 4994,951 n/mm2), tensile strength (16,938 n/mm2 to 30,581 n/mm2), screw holding strength (141,240 n/mm to 281,919 n/mm), hardness (77,035 n/mm2 to 129,898 n/mm2), surface roughness (1,024µm to 3,225µm), fire performance (weight loss %86,691 to % 98,999, heat release rate 155,452 kw/m2 ile 542,536 kw/m2, effective heat of combustion 20,336 mj/kg ile 29,056 mj/kg), uv accelerated weathering (500 hours 10,784 to 44,569, 1000 hours 26,982 to 51,536), fungal resistance (typ 507 the impact of weight loss due to fungus %0,000 to %1,309, cov 1030 the impact of weight loss due to fungus %0,000 to %1,643) were found in this study.WPCs made from pine wood flour had higher accelerated weathering performance and biological durability than those of the WPCs made from other wood species. It was concluded that the wood species has not significant effect on the other properties of the WPCs. The WPCs made from polyethylene had the highest properties on accelerated UV weathering performance, fire and decay resistance while the WPCs made from polypropylene had the highest performance on the other properties. The density values of the WPCs made from polyethylene were higher than those of the WPCs made from polypropylene. When wood flour loading level increased, the MOE, janka hardness, and fire performance properties increased but the other properties slightly decreased. The density values increase with increasing wood flour loading level. The results obtained in this study also showed that using of 3% additive had positive effects on the performance properties of the WPCs.Use and manufacturing of WPC materials should be encouraged. Improving the end use properties of the composites by changes made on the manufacturing parameters will enhance its performance and properties; it will subsequently provide sustainable use of raw materials. 298

Yonga levha ve orta yoğunlukta lif levha (MDF) Türkiye mobilya endüstrisindemühendislik malzemesi olarak yaygın bir sekilde kullanılmaktadır. Bu malzemeler,üretimleri sırasında uygun kalite kontrol testlerinden geçmedikleri takdirde, önemliproblemleri yaratabilmektedirler. Türkiye'de üretilen tüm bu panellerin fiziksel vemekanik özellikleri ile ilgili gerçekçi sayısal veriler henüz tespit edilmemistir.Bu arastırmada; Türkiye'de üretilen ve ilgili sektörlerde kullanılan yonga levhave orta yoğunlukta lif levhaların fiziksel, mekanik ve teknolojik özelliklerinin tespitedilmesi, Türk standartları ve / veya Avrupa standartlarına uygunluğununbelirlenmesi ve dolayısıyla da malzemelerin bilimsel anlamda kalitesinin arttırılmasıamaçlanmıstır.Deney örnekleri, Türkiye piyasasında bulunan yonga levha ve orta yoğunlukta liflevha üreten bütün üretici firmalardan temin edilen 3'er adet genel amaçlar içinüretilmis yatık yongalı yonga levha ve orta yoğunluktaki lif levhalardanhazırlanmıstır.Deney örneklerinin hazırlanması ile fiziksel ve mekanik özelliklerin belirlenmesiiçin gerekli deney düzenekleri ve uygulanan deney yöntemleri için TSE ve ENstandartlarında belirtilen esaslara uyulmustur. Böylelikle Türkiye'de üretilen yongalevha ve orta yoğunluktaki lif levhaların Böylelikle Türkiye'de üretilen yonga levhave orta yoğunluktaki lif levhaların standartlara uygunluğu ve tutarlılığı hakkındaVIveriler sağlanmıstır. Bu çalısma sonucunda Türkiye'de üretilen yonga ve liflevhaların standartlara uygunluk oranı % 91, tutarlılık oranı % 97,5 olarakbelirlenmistir. Bu veriler özellikle mobilya ürün mühendisliğinde kullanılarakuluslararası normlara uygun ürünler üretilmesine ve mobilya sektörünün dıspiyasalarda daha fazla pazar payı elde etmesine yardımcı olacaktır. Ayrıca, yongalevha ve lif levhaların kalitelerinin gelistirilmesinde kullanılacak bu veriler sayesindebu tür ahsap esaslı levhaların yarı mamul olarak ihraç edilmesi konusunda da büyükyararlar sağlanarak, ekonomiye önemli katkılarda bulunulacaktır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Yonga Levha (YL), Lif Levha (MDF), Fiziksel Özellikler,Mekanik Özellikler Particleboard and medium density fiberboard are commonly utilized asengineered panel products in Turkish furniture industry. Factual informationregarding the properties of all particleboard and MDF panel manufactured in Turkeyis not readily available. Outcomes of this study will be used in scientificallyincreasing the quality of the wood based panels.The purpose of this study was to determine the physical and mechanicalproperties of domestically produced particleboard and MDF panels and make thisinformation available to all parties, namely panel manufacturers, distributors,furniture designers, manufacturers and users. One important underlying goal of thisstudy was to compare the test results with those that are specified by TSE and ENstandards in order to observe the deviations from the specified values.In order to reach these objectives, 3 panels of each type were be procured fromeach domestic manufacturer in Turkey. ÖZET `Doğru`, `ahlak`, `etik değerler` genel anlamlarıyla edebiyata her zaman konu olmuşlardır. Olgunlaşma Romanı, batının `soyut` olarak nitelediği bu kavramları ve bunların ortaya çıkış biçimini ele alan bir yazın türü olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Amerikan Olgunlaşma Romanı, ahlaksal değerlerin soyut değil `işlevsel` ve `deneysel` olduğunu iddia eder. Bu geleneğe göre, `nihai` olarak değerlendirilebilecek herhangi bir `doğru` yoktur. Avrupa'daki benzerlerinin aksine, Amerikan Olgunlaşma romanı, bu çerçevede, etik değer (oluşturma) sorununun pragmatik yaklaşımla çözümlendiği bir laboratuvar görevi görmektedir. Bir başka deyişle, Amerikan Olgunlaşma romanı tüm kavramların deneysel olarak analiz edildiği bir sahadır. Roman kahramanları yaşadıkları deneyimler açısından incelenmiş, sosyal kurumlar ve sınıf bilinci gibi soyut kavramlara verdikleri pragmatik tepkiler ele alınmış, olgunlaşma süreçleri boyunca sergiledikleri özgün kişilik oluşturma savaşımları ve isteklilikleri vurgulanmıştır. vı ABSTRACT The construction of `truth`, `morality`, and `ethics/ethical values` has been a central issue in literature in general. The Bildungsromane, in particular, carry the qualities in representing the formation of such notions that have long been considered `abstract` terms in Western thinking and literature. However, the American Bildungsroman tradition puts forward that any moral value should be `functional` and `experimental`. Moreover, there is no single norm that is able to assert something as the ultimate truth. The American Bildungsroman, unlike its European counterparts and associates, is the laboratory of pragmatic approaches to solve the problematic of constructing ethics and ethical values in this sense. The American Bildungsroman, in other terms, is the field where all terms are examined experientially. Therefore, pragmatism becomes a certain analytical method as well as a philosophy in studying the Bildungsroman and its character while establishing a practical- functional moral system. In this study, my aim is to demonstrate the cooperation and collaboration of pragmatism and the Bildungsroman as `truth-making` and `self-formation` processes. The novels selected in this study (Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Henry James's What Maisie Knew, J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye) are examples of analyzing the Bildung heroes/heroines and their experiences in terms of their pragmatic responses to such socially-oriented terms as social institutions and class structure, the reason why the existing system does not satisfy them, and their willingness to build their own and authentic selves in their Bildung process. ÖZET Bu tez genel olarak altı bölümden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde, `gotik` sözcüğü kavramsal düzeyde ele alınmış, tarihi süreç içinde çağrıştırdığı anlamlar, örneğin korku, karanlık, depresyon, anlatılmıştır. Charles Brockden Brown' in Wieland adlı yapıtına paralel olarak `gotik` yazın türünün Amerikan yazınımdaki yeri, yansımaları ve bazı özellikleri üzerinde kısaca durulmuştur. İkinci bölüm, Wieland adlı yapıtın olay örgüsü ve romanı gotik yapan anlatım tekniği hakkındadır. Yazar-okur ilişkisi, okuyucuyu romanın içine katma arzusu, birinci şahıstan anlatılan olayın psikolojik boyutu ve tüm bu özelliklerin `gotik` diye tanımlanan roman türüne katkıları ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü bölüm, romandaki olayların geçtiği çevre üzerinde durmaktadır. Bu bölümde, sıradan bir çevrenin (tapmak, ev gibi) kişi psikolojisine etkisi; çevrenin kişileri değil de kişilerin çevreyi nasıl korku veren bir duruma dönüştürdükleri; klasik gotik roman anlayışının tersine, olağan bir fiziksel yapının bir anda dehşet saçan bir havaya bürünmesi ve fiziksel çevrenin kişilerin ruh yapısıyla örtüşmesi incelenmiştir. Dördüncü bölüm, gotik roman türünün merkez noktası kabul edilen karakterler hakkında psikolojik bir yaklaşım sunmaktadır. Kişilerin ruh yapısı,olaylara bakış açıları ve kendi iç dünyaları ile olan çatışmaları birer gotik özellik olarak ele alınmıştır. Beşinci bölüm Wieland ile Nathaniel Hawthorne'un The House of the Seven Gables, Washington Irving'in `The Adventure of the German Student`, ve Edgar Allan Poe'nin `The Fall of the House of Usher` adlı yapıtlarındaki çevre- insan, karşıt cinsler, lanetlenmiş aileler gibi kavramlar bakımından benzerlikleri vurgulanmaya çalışılmıştır. Son bölümde, psikolojik gotik olarak tanımlanabilen bu romanın kendinden sonraki yazarlara yol açması bakımından taşıdığı özellikler kısaca toparlanmıştır. Gotik yazın türünün Amerikan yazınında ağırlıklı olarak psikolojik bir boyut üzerinde yoğunlaştığı vurgulanmıştır. ABSTRACT This dissertation consists of six chapters: In the first chapter, the word `gothic` is defined. On a historical/literary level, the basic attributes of `gothic` - darkness, fear, horror, depression - are stated briefly. Parallel to these attributes, Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland is introduced as an example of `gothic` in literature in general and in American literature in particular. The second chapter mainly focuses on the plot and point of view of Wieland. Narration in first person is analyzed as a gothic element in terms of reader-author-narrator relationship and its psychological dimension. The third chapter concentrates on the environment as a gothic spectacle. It is affirmed that the individual mind is manipulative in converting an ordinary setting into a place of horror and terror. The one-to-one correspondence between characters and setting is put forward. The fourth chapter discusses the mental constitution of `gothic` characters. The psychological states of the characters, their opinions, their inner struggles are analyzed as the attributes that make them `gothic`. The fifth chapter brings forth the resemblances between Wieland and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables, Washington Irving's`The Adventure of the German Student`, and Edgar Allan Poe's `The Fall of the House of Usher` in terms of the victimized and the victimizer, the setting and the characters, cursed families, and the opposing sexes. The last chapter deals with Brown's Wieland as the first example of American gothic literature and some works of the followers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Washington Irving, and the reaffirmation of `psychological gothic` as its distinctive feature from those of its European contemporaries. 102
