1. What is a chemostat? Insights from hybrid dynamics and stochastic thermodynamics

Abstract

At the microscopic scale, open chemical reaction networks are described by stochastic reactions that follow mass-action kinetics and are coupled to chemostats. We show that closed chemical reaction networks -- with specific stoichiometries imposed by mass-action kinetics -- behave like open ones in the limit where the abundances of a subset of species become macroscopic, thus playing the role of chemostats. We prove that this limit is thermodynamically consistent by recovering the local detailed balance condition of open chemical reaction networks and deriving the proper expression of the entropy production rate. In particular, the entropy production rate features two contributions: one accounting for the dissipation of the stochastic reactions, the other for the dissipation of continuous reactions controlling the chemostats. 2. Comprehensive Kernel Safety in the Spectre Era: Mitigations and Performance Evaluation (Extended Version)

Abstract

The efficacy of address space layout randomization has been formally demonstrated in a shared-memory model by Abadi et al., contingent on specific assumptions about victim programs. However, modern operating systems, implementing layout randomization in the kernel, diverge from these assumptions and operate on a separate memory model with communication through system calls. In this work, we relax Abadi et al.'s language assumptions while demonstrating that layout randomization offers a comparable safety guarantee in a system with memory separation. However, in practice, speculative execution and side-channels are recognized threats to layout randomization. We show that kernel safety cannot be restored for attackers capable of using side-channels and speculative execution, and introduce enforcement mechanisms that can guarantee speculative kernel safety for safe system calls in the Spectre era. Abstract

The magnetised near detector (ND280) of the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment has been recently upgraded aiming to satisfy the requirement of reducing the systematic uncertainty from measuring the neutrinonucleus interaction cross section, which is the largest systematic uncertainty in the search for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation. A key component of the upgrade is SuperFGD, a 3D segmented plastic scintillator detector made of approximately 2,000,000 optically-isolated 1 cm3 cubes. It will provide a 3D image of GeV neutrino interactions by combining tracking and stopping power measurements of final state particles with sub-nanosecond time resolution. The performance of SuperFGD is characterized by the precision of its response to charged particles as well as the systematic effects that might affect the physics measurements. Hence, a detailed Geant4 based optical simulation of the SuperFGD building block, i.e. a plastic scintillating cube read out by three wavelength shifting fibers, has been developed and validated with the different datasets collected in various beam tests. Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project, a joint project of the Centro Fermi (Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche "E.Fermi") and INFN, has a dual purpose: a scientific research program on cosmic rays at ground level and an intense outreach and educational program. The project consists in a network of about 60 tracking detectors, called telescopes, mostly hosted in Italian High Schools. Each telescope is made by three Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers, operated so far with a gas mixture composed by 98% C$_2$H$_2$F$_4$ and 2% SF$_6$. Due to its high Global Warming Potential, a few years ago the EEE collaboration has started an extensive R&D on alternative mixtures environmentally sustainable and compatible with the current experimental setup and operational environment. Among other gas mixtures, the one with helium and hydrofluoroolefin R1234ze gave the best result during the preliminary tests performed with two of the network telescopes. The detector has proved to reach performance levels comparable to those obtained with previous mixtures, without any modification of the hardware. 5. A quantitative probabilistic relational Hoare logic

Abstract

We introduce eRHL, a program logic for reasoning about relational expectation properties of pairs of probabilistic programs. eRHL is quantitative, i.e., its pre- and post-conditions take values in the extended non-negative reals. Thanks to its quantitative assertions, eRHL overcomes randomness alignment restrictions from prior logics, including PRHL, a popular relational program logic used to reason about security of cryptographic constructions, and apRHL, a variant of PRHL for differential privacy. As a result, eRHL is the first relational probabilistic program logic to be supported by non-trivial soundness and completeness results for all almost surely terminating programs. We show that eRHL is sound and complete with respect to program equivalence, statistical distance, and differential privacy. We also show that every PRHL judgment is valid iff it is provable in eRHL. We showcase the practical benefits of eRHL with examples that are beyond reach of PRHL and apRHL. more...

6. Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics of Non-Ideal Reaction-Diffusion Systems: Implications for Active Self-Organization

Abstract

We develop a framework describing the dynamics and thermodynamics of open non-ideal reaction-diffusion systems, which embodies Flory-Huggins theories of mixtures and chemical reaction network theories. Our theory elucidates the mechanisms underpinning the emergence of self-organized dissipative structures in these systems. It evaluates the dissipation needed to sustain and control them, discriminating the contributions from each reaction and diffusion process with spatial resolution. It also reveals the role of the reaction network in powering and shaping these structures. We identify particular classes of networks in which diffusion processes always equilibrate within the structures, while dissipation occurs solely due to chemical reactions. The spatial configurations resulting from these processes can be derived by minimizing a kinetic potential, contrasting with the minimization of the thermodynamic free energy in passive systems. This framework opens the way to investigating the energetic cost of phenomena such as liquid-liquid phase separation, coacervation, and the formation of biomolecular condensates. more...

Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures more...

Abstract

Machine learning (ML) has become pervasive in various research fields, including binaural synthesis personalization, which is crucial for sound in immersive virtual environments. Researchers have mainly addressed this topic by estimating the individual head-related transfer function (HRTF). HRTFs are utilized to render audio signals at specific spatial positions, thereby simulating real-world sound wave interactions with the human body. As such, an HRTF that is compliant with individual characteristics enhances the realism of the binaural simulation. This survey systematically examines the HRTF individualization works based on ML proposed in the literature. The analyzed works are organized according to the processing steps involved in the ML workflow, including the employed dataset, input and output types, data preprocessing operations, ML models, and model evaluation. In addition to categorizing the works of the existing literature, this survey discusses their achievements, identifies their limitations, and outlines aspects that require further investigation at the crossroads of research communities in acoustics, audio signal processing, and machine learning. more...

Properties of interest include (positive) almost-sure termination, expected runtime or expected cost, that is, for example, the expected number of applications of a given quantum gate, etc. After studying the completeness of these problems in the arithmetical hierarchy over the Clifford+T fragment of quantum mechanics, we express these problems using a variation of a quantum pre-expectation transformer, a weakest precondition based technique that allows to symbolically compute these quantitative properties. Under a smooth restriction-a restriction to polynomials of bounded degree over a real closed field-we show that the quantitative problem, which consists in finding an upper-bound to the pre-expectation, can be decided in time double-exponential in the size of a program, thus providing, despite its great complexity, one of the first decidable results on the analysis and verification of quantum programs. The thermodynamic and dynamical conditions necessary to observe indefinite growth in homogeneous open chemical reaction networks (CRNs) satisfying mass action kinetics were presented in Srinivas et al. (2023): Unimolecular CRNs can only accumulate equilibrium concentrations of species while multimolecular CRNs are needed to produce indefinite growth with nonequilibrium concentrations. Within multimolecular CRNs, pseudo-unimolecular CRNs produce nonequilibrium concentrations with zero efficiencies. Nonequilibrium growth with finite efficiencies requires dynamically nonlinear CRNs. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis supporting these results. Mathematical proofs are provided for growth in unimolecular and pseudo-unimolecular CRNs. Abstract

We identify the thermodynamic conditions necessary to observe indefinite growth in homogeneous open chemical reaction networks (CRNs) satisfying mass action kinetics. We also characterize the thermodynamic efficiency of growth by considering the fraction of the chemical work supplied from the surroundings that is converted into CRN free energy. We find that indefinite growth cannot arise in CRNs chemostatted by fixing the concentration of some species at constant values, or in continuous-flow stirred tank reactors. Indefinite growth requires a constant net influx from the surroundings of at least one species. In this case, unimolecular CRNs always generate equilibrium linear growth, i.e., a continuous linear accumulation of species with equilibrium concentrations and efficiency one. Multimolecular CRNs are necessary to generate nonequilibrium growth, i.e., the continuous accumulation of species with nonequilibrium concentrations. Pseudo-unimolecular CRNs - a subclass of multimolecular CRNs - always generate asymptotic linear growth with zero efficiency. Our findings demonstrate the importance of the CRN topology and the chemostatting procedure in determining the dynamics and thermodynamics of growth. more...

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Collaboration is fully involved in an ecological transition. The use of the standard gas mixture, \ce{C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}}+ \ce{SF_{6}}, has stopped in favor of an alternative green mixture based on \ce{C_{3}H_{2}F_{4}} with the addition of He or \ce{CO_{2}}. The choise of these new mixtures is motivated by the significant lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) to reduce the emission of gases potentially contributing to the greenhouse effect. The EEE experiment consists of 61 muon telescopes based on Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs), each telescope composed of 3 chambers filled with gas. Several EEE detectors are today completely fluxed with the new ecological mixture. Abstract

Present and next generation of long-baseline accelerator experiments are bringing the measurement of neutrino oscillations into the precision era with ever-increasing statistics. One of the most challenging aspects of achieving such measurements is developing relevant systematic uncertainties in the modeling of nuclear effects in neutrino-nucleus interactions. To address this problem, state-of-the-art detectors are being developed to extract detailed information about all particles produced in neutrino interactions. To fully profit from these experimental advancements, it is essential to have reliable models of propagation of the outgoing hadrons through nuclear matter able to predict how the energy is distributed between all the final-state observed particles. In this article, we investigate the role of nuclear de-excitation in neutrino-nucleus scattering using two Monte Carlo cascade models: NuWro and INCL coupled with the de-excitation code ABLA. The ablation model ABLA is used here for the first time to model de-excitation in neutrino interactions. As input to ABLA, we develop a consistent simulation of nuclear excitation energy tuned to electron-scattering data. The paper includes the characterization of the leading proton kinematics and of the nuclear cluster production during cascade and de-excitation. Abstract

We report an updated measurement of the $\nu_{\mu}$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{\mu,\pi} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(\theta_{\mu}) > 0.8$ and $\cos(\theta_{\pi}) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $\nu_{\mu}$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. Abstract

A substantial fraction of systematic uncertainties in neutrino oscillation experiments stem from the lack of precision in modeling the nuclear target in neutrino-nucleus interactions. Whilst this has driven significant progress in the development of improved nuclear models for neutrino scattering, it is crucial that the models used in neutrino data analyses be accompanied by parameters and associated uncertainties that allow the coverage of plausible nuclear physics. Based on constraints from electron scattering data, we develop such a set of parameters, which can be applied to nuclear shell models, and test their application to the Benhar et al spectral function model. Abstract

We show that macroscopic irreversible thermodynamics for viscous fluids can be derived from exact information-theoretic thermodynamic identities valid at the microscale. Entropy production, in particular, is a measure of the loss of many-particle correlations in the same way in which it measures the loss of system-reservoirs correlations in stochastic thermodynamics (ST). More specifically, we first show that boundary conditions at the macroscopic level define a natural decomposition of the entropy production rate (EPR) in terms of thermodynamic forces multiplying their conjugate currents, as well as a change in suitable nonequilibrium potential that acts as a Lyapunov function in the absence of forces. Moving to the microscale, we identify the exact identities at the origin of these dissipative contributions for isolated Hamiltonian systems. We then show that the molecular chaos hypothesis, which gives rise to the Boltzmann equation at the mesoscale, leads to a positive rate of loss of many-particle correlations, which we identify with the Boltzmann EPR. By generalizing the Boltzmann equation to account for boundaries with nonuniform temperature and nonzero velocity, and resorting to the Chapman-Enskog expansion, we recover the macroscopic theory we started from. Finally, using a linearized Boltzmann equation we derive ST for dilute particles in a weakly out-of-equilibrium fluid and its corresponding macroscopic thermodynamics. Abstract

Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. Abstract

We develop a general classification of the nature of the instabilities yielding spatial organization in open nonideal reaction-diffusion systems, based on linear stability analysis. This encompasses dynamics where chemical species diffuse, interact with each other, and undergo chemical reactions driven out of equilibrium by external chemostats. We find analytically that these instabilities can be of two types: instabilities caused by intermolecular energetic interactions (E type), and instabilities caused by multimolecular out-of-equilibrium chemical reactions (R type). Furthermore, we identify a class of chemical reaction networks, containing unimolecular networks but also extending beyond them, that can only undergo E-type instabilities. We illustrate our analytical findings with numerical simulations on two reaction-diffusion models, each displaying one of the two types of instability and generating stable patterns. more...

Abstract

In this work, we study the fully automated inference of expected result values of probabilistic programs in the presence of natural programming constructs such as procedures, local variables and recursion. While crucial, capturing these constructs becomes highly non-trivial. The key contribution is the definition of a term representation, denoted as infer[.], translating a pre-expectation semantics into first-order constraints, susceptible to automation via standard methods. A crucial step is the use of logical variables, inspired by previous work on Hoare logics for recursive programs. Noteworthy, our methodology is not restricted to tail-recursion, which could unarguably be replaced by iteration and wouldn't need additional insights. Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. Abstract

Living organisms continuously harness energy to perform complex functions for their adaptation and survival while part of that energy is dissipated in the form of heat or chemical waste. Determining the energetic cost and the efficiency of specific cellular processes remains a largely open problem. Here, we analyze the efficiency of mitochondrial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production through the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and oxidative phosphorylation that generates most of the cellular chemical energy in eukaryotes. The regulation of this pathway by calcium signaling represents a well-characterized example of a regulatory cross-talk that can affect the energetic output of a metabolic pathway, but its concrete energetic impact remains elusive. On the one hand, calcium enhances ATP production by activating key enzymes of the TCA cycle, but on the other hand calcium homeostasis depends on ATP availability. To evaluate how calcium signaling impacts the efficiency of mitochondrial metabolism, we propose a detailed kinetic model describing the calcium-mitochondria cross-talk and we analyze it using a nonequilibrium thermodynamic approach: after identifying the effective reactions driving mitochondrial metabolism out of equilibrium, we quantify the thermodynamic efficiency of the metabolic machinery for different physiological conditions. We find that calcium oscillations increase the efficiency with a maximum close to substrate-limited conditions, suggesting a compensatory effect of calcium signaling on the energetics of mitochondrial metabolism. more...

Abstract

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\Delta{}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $\Delta\chi^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=0,\pi$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2\sigma$ credible level using a flat prior in $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2\sigma$ using a flat prior in $\sin\delta_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. Abstract

Stochastic chemical processes are described by the chemical master equation satisfying the law of mass-action. We first ask whether the dual master equation, which has the same steady state as the chemical master equation, but with inverted reaction currents, satisfies the law of mass-action, namely, still describes a chemical process. We prove that the answer depends on the topological property of the underlying chemical reaction network known as deficiency. The answer is yes only for deficiency-zero networks. It is no for all other networks, implying that their steady-state currents cannot be inverted by controlling the kinetic constants of the reactions. Hence, the network deficiency imposes a form of non-invertibility to the chemical dynamics. We then ask whether catalytic chemical networks are deficiency-zero. We prove that the answer is no when they are driven out of equilibrium due to the exchange of some species with the environment. more...

Abstract

We lay the foundation of a circuit theory for chemical reaction networks. Chemical reactions are grouped into chemical modules solely characterized by their current-concentration characteristic, as electrical devices by their current-voltage (I-V) curve in electronic circuit theory. This, combined with the chemical analog of Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws, provides a powerful tool to predict reaction currents and dissipation across complex chemical networks. Abstract

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures. Abstract

The SuperFGD will be a part of the ND280 near detector of the T2K and Hyper Kamiokande projects, that will help to reduce systematic uncertainties related with neutrino flux and cross-section modeling. The upgraded ND280 will be able to perform a full exclusive reconstruction of the final state from neutrino-nucleus interactions, including measurements of low momentum protons, pions and, for the first time, event-by event measurements of neutron kinematics. The time resolution defines the neutron energy resolution. We present the results of time resolution measurements made with the SuperFGD prototype that consists of 9216 plastic scintillator cubes (cube size is 1 cm$^3$) readout with 1728 wavelength-shifting fibers going along three orthogonal directions. We use data from the muon beam exposure at CERN. The time resolution of 0.97 ns was obtained for one readout channel after implementing the time calibration with a correction for the time-walk effect. The time resolution improves with energy deposited in a scintillator cube. Averaging two readout channels for one scintillator cube improves the time resolution to 0.68 ns which means that signals in different channels are not synchronous. Therefore the contribution from the time recording step of 2.5 ns is averaged as well. Averaging time values from N channels improves the time resolution by $\sim 1/\sqrt{N}$. Therefore a very good time resolution should be achievable for neutrons since neutron recoils hit typically several scintillator cubes and in addition produce larger amplitudes than muons. Measurements performed with a laser and a wide-bandwidth oscilloscope demonstrated that the time resolution obtained with the muon beam is not far from its expected limit. Abstract

Information thermodynamics relates the rate of change of mutual information between two interacting subsystems to their thermodynamics when the joined system is described by a bipartite stochastic dynamics satisfying local detailed balance. Here, we expand the scope of information thermodynamics to deterministic bipartite chemical reaction networks, namely, composed of two coupled subnetworks sharing species, but not reactions. We do so by introducing a meaningful notion of mutual information between different molecular features, that we express in terms of deterministic concentrations. This allows us to formulate separate second laws for each subnetwork, which account for their energy and information exchanges, in complete analogy with stochastic systems. We then use our framework to investigate the working mechanisms of a model of chemically-driven self-assembly and an experimental light-driven bimolecular motor. We show that both systems are constituted by two coupled subnetworks of chemical reactions. One subnetwork is maintained out of equilibrium by external reservoirs (chemostats or light sources) and powers the other via energy and information flows. Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have gained recognition as a highly versatile and promising cell source for repopulating bioengineered scaffolds due to their inherent capacity to differentiate into multiple cell types. However, MSC implantation techniques have often yielded inconsistent clinical results, underscoring the need for advanced approaches to enhance their therapeutic efficacy. Recent developments in three-dimensional (3D) bioengineered scaffolds have provided a significant breakthrough by closely mimicking the in vivo environment, addressing the limitations of traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell cultures. Among these, nanofibrous scaffolds have proven particularly effective, offering an optimal 3D framework, growth-permissive substrates, and the delivery of trophic factors crucial for MSC survival and regeneration. Furthermore, the selection of appropriate biomaterials can amplify the paracrine effects of MSCs, promoting both proliferation and targeted differentiation. The synergistic combination of MSCs with nanofibrous scaffolds has demonstrated remarkable potential in achieving repair, regeneration, and tissue-specific differentiation with enhanced safety and efficacy, paving the way for routine clinical applications. In this review, we examine the most recent studies (2013–2023) that explore the combined use of MSCs and nanofibrous scaffolds for differentiation into cardiogenic, epithelial, myogenic, tendon, and vascular cell lineages. Using PubMed, we identified and analyzed 275 relevant articles based on the search terms “Nanofibers”, “Electrospinning”, “Mesenchymal stem cells”, and “Differentiation”. This review highlights the critical advancements in the use of nanofibrous scaffolds as a platform for MSC differentiation and tissue regeneration. By summarizing key findings from the last decade, it provides valuable insights for researchers and clinicians aiming to optimize scaffold design, MSC integration, and translational applications. 49. Acoustics-specific Piano Velocity Estimation

Abstract

Motivated by the state-of-art psychological research, we note that a piano performance transcribed with existing Automatic Music Transcription (AMT) methods cannot be successfully resynthesized without affecting the artistic content of the performance. This is due to 1) the different mappings between MIDI parameters used by different instruments, and 2) the fact that musicians adapt their way of playing to the surrounding acoustic environment. To face this issue, we propose a methodology to build acoustics-specific AMT systems that are able to model the adaptations that musicians apply to convey their interpretation. Specifically, we train models tailored for virtual instruments in a modular architecture that takes as input an audio recording and the relative aligned music score, and outputs the acoustics-specific velocities of each note. We test different model shapes and show that the proposed methodology generally outperforms the usual AMT pipeline which does not consider specificities of the instrument and of the acoustic environment. 50. A Perceptual Measure for Evaluating the Resynthesis of Automatic Music Transcriptions

Abstract

This study focuses on the perception of music performances when contextual factors, such as room acoustics and instrument, change. We propose to distinguish the concept of "performance" from the one of "interpretation", which expresses the "artistic intention". Towards assessing this distinction, we carried out an experimental evaluation where 91 subjects were invited to listen to various audio recordings created by resynthesizing MIDI data obtained through Automatic Music Transcription (AMT) systems and a sensorized acoustic piano. During the resynthesis, we simulated different contexts and asked listeners to evaluate how much the interpretation changes when the context changes. Results show that: (1) MIDI format alone is not able to completely grasp the artistic intention of a music performance; (2) usual objective evaluation measures based on MIDI data present low correlations with the average subjective evaluation. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel measure which is meaningfully correlated with the outcome of the tests.
