Hydrogel features can be designed and optimized using different crosslinking agents to meet specific requirements. In this regard, the present work investigates the physico-chemical features of cellulose-based hydrogels, designed by using different epoxy crosslinkers from the same glycidyl family, namely epichlorohydrin (ECH), 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE), and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPTGE). The effect of the crosslinker's structure (from simple to branched) and functionality (mono-, bi- and tri-epoxy groups) on the hydrogels' features was studied. The performances of the hydrogels were investigated through the gel fraction, as well as by ATR-FTIR, DVS, SEM, DSC, and TG analyses. Also, the swelling and rheological behaviors of the hydrogels were examined. The advantages and limitations of each approach were discussed and a strong correlation between the crosslinker structure and the hydrogel properties was established. The formation of new ether bonds was evidenced by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. It was emphasized that the pore size is directly influenced by the crosslinker type, namely, it decreases with the increasing number of epoxy groups from the crosslinker molecule, i.e., from 46 ± 11.1 µm (hydrogel CE, with ECH) to 12.3 ± 2.5 µm (hydrogel CB, with BDDE) and 6.7 ± 1.5 µm (hydrogel CT, with TMPTGE). The rheological behavior is consistent with the swelling data and hydrogel morphology, such as CE with the highest Qmax and the largest pore size being relatively more elastic than CB and CT. Instead, the denser matrices obtained by using crosslinkers with more complex structures have better thermal stability. The experimental results highlight the possibility of using a specific crosslinking agent, with a defined structure and functionality, in order to establish the main characteristics of hydrogels and, implicitly, to design them for a certain field of application. The electronic absorption spectral characteristics of cycloimmonium ylids with a zwitterionic structure have been analyzed in forty-three solvents with different hydrogen bonding abilities. The two ylids lack fluorescence emission but are very dynamic in electronic absorption spectra. Using the maximum of the ICT band, the goal was to establish an accurate relationship between the shift of the ICT visible band and the solvent parameters and to estimate two of the descriptors of the first (the) excited state: the dipole moment and the polarizability. Two procedures were involved: the variational method and the relationships of the Abe model. The results indicate that the excited state dipole moment of the two methylids decreases in the absorption process in comparison with the ground state. The introduction of a correction term in the Abe model that neglects the intermolecular H-bonding interactions leads to a more accurate determination of the two descriptors. The strong solvatochromic response of both ylids has been further applied in distinguishing the solvents as a function of their specific parameters. Principal component analysis was applied to five selected properties, including the maximum of the charge transfer band. The crosslinked porous microparticles based on glycidyl methacrylate, N‐vinylimidazole, and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (molar ratio between monomers 40:30:30) obtained in the presence of three porogenic agents (toluene, n‐butyl acetate, and toluene:n‐butyl acetate mixture, 1:1, v/v) are used as precursors in the polymer analogous reactions with some betainizing agents (sodium monochloroacetate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and 1,3–propane sultone) in order to introduce the carboxybetaine/sulfobetaine groups to the tertiary nitrogen atom from the imidazole ring. ATR–FTIR spectroscopy is used to highlight the presence of carboxybetaine/sulfobetaine groups on the structure of the microparticles, but also to calculate the degree of betainization (55.91%–90.2%) The zwitterionic microparticles are characterized by scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, equilibrium swelling ratio as a function of pH values, swelling kinetics, ion exchange capacities and particle size distribution. Also, the parameters of porous structure (pore diameter, pore volume, porosity, and specific surface area) are determined by mercury porosimetry. The antibacterial properties of Gram‐positive (Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram‐negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria are evaluated. It is found that the zwitterionic structures containing a shorter length alkyl chain between ionic groups exhibit excellent antibacterial activity of about 80%–92%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Optically birefringent polymers have found utility in numerous applications, especially in liquid crystal displays. This work is focused on inducing molecular ordering in polyvinyl alcohol films in different conditions. The samples were modified by new mixed approaches: drawing, rubbing before drying, rubbing before drying followed by drawing, and combined rubbing, drawing and then parallel scratching. The level of chain alignment in the samples was quantified by birefringence measurements using several experimental techniques, namely interferometry, polarization ellipse approach, channeled spectra and polarized light refractometry. The produced anisotropy was correlated with the sample morphology examined via optical microscopy under crossed polarizers. Optical retardation was found to be larger as the generated birefringence of mechanically deformed polyvinyl alcohol foils was higher. It was found the new proposed approach of ordering polymer sample by combined rubbing, drawing and then scratching is most suitable as retardation layer for compensating light leakage in display devices. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), a powerful characterization tool widely applied in problems in a large range of disciplines of the natural sciences, including cellular biology, was used to obtain information about the morphological changes induced in the erythrocyte membrane at the patients with epilepsy that undergo a long time treatment that operates upon one or several neuronal ionic channels, comparative with a healthy donor. This technique allowed non-invasive imaging of erythrocyte membrane, revealing details and specific characteristics down to the nanometer level with characterization of surface texture parameters, such as average height, average roughness and coefficient of kurtosis at micrometer/nanometer resolution. For the healthy donor the AFM morphology appears to have all the characteristics of a normal red blood cell membrane. Instead, the closer examination of the erythrocytes membrane surface morphology for the samples collected from the patients diagnosed with epilepsy and treated with specific drugs did not reveal similar structures with those obtained for the healthy donor. The nanostructure of the membrane was drastically damaged, depending on the administrated treatment, and probably in time will affect their functionality. Therefore, the anticomital drugs have influence not only at the neuronal level, but also at the red blood cell level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
