The autonomic nervous system (ANS) harmoniously regulates all internal organic functions (heart rate, blood pressure, vasomotion, digestive tract motility, endocrinal secretions) and adapts them to the needs. It's the control of so-called vegetative functions, which allows homeostasis but also allostasis of our body. ANS is divided into two systems often understood as antagonistic and complementary: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic systems. However, we currently know of many situations of co-activation of the two systems. Long seen as acting through "reflex" control loops passing through the integration of peripheral information and the efferent response to the peripheral organ, more recent electrophysiological and brain functional imaging knowledge has been able to identify the essential role of the central autonomic network. This element complicates the understanding of the responses of the reflex loops classically used to identify and quantify dysautonomia. Finding the "ANS" tools best suited for the clinician in their daily practice is a challenge that we will attempt to address in this work., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS. Background: The aim of the work is to define the morphological peculiarities of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in the thoracic region., Material and Methods: An anatomical study was performed on 20 cadavers, 17 men and 3 women. We studied cadavers within 24 h of death. We observed the vertebral and prevertebral section of the truncus sympathicus, their morphological peculiarities depending on the type of ANS. To show the intimate relationship of both systems, we also focused on the details of the structure related to the connections of the ANS with the spinal nervous system., Results: In the thoracic region, the segmental arrangement of the truncus sympathicus ganglia prevailed in 16 (80%) cases. Rami communicantes gave anastomoses to spinal nerves. Small ganglia were observed on the rami communicantes to the spinal nerves. In the case of the concentrated type, in 4 cases (20%), we observed a reduction in the number of ganglia, as well as the absence of small ganglia on the connecting branches. Connections between n. vagus and sympathetic branches were poorly developed. We observed right-left asymmetry and differences in the formation of ganglia and anastomoses in the truncus sympathicus in the vertebral and prevertebral section. Variations of distance of n. splanchnicus major were observed in 16 cases (80%)., Conclusion: This study allowed us to identify and describe the morphological peculiarities of the thoracic ANS. The variations were numerous; their preoperative diagnosis is difficult to impossible. The knowledge gained can be helpful in clarifying clinical signs and symptoms.

Background: No reports have been made on the entire extrinsic innervation of the heart in small laboratory animals. Therefore, this study examined the detailed morphotopographic features of the extrinsic cardiac autonomic nervous system (ECANS) with its adjacent structures (1) to record the general morpho-topography and variations of the ECANS in guinea pigs, (2) to compare it with previous reports on common laboratory rodents (rats, mice, and Syrian hamsters), rabbits, domesticated animals (cats, dogs, sheep, goats, oxen, pigs, and horses), primates, and humans, and (3) to infer the macroscopic evolutionary changes they presented., Methods: The sympathetic ganglia, vagi, and emitting cardiac nerves/branches in the cervical and thoracic regions were dissected in 24 sides of 12 formalin-fixed, arterially injected adult male and female guinea pigs under a stereomicroscope., Results: The ECANS in guinea pigs presented following general morphologic characteristics: (1) constant existence of the cranial cervical ganglion (CG) and placing caudal to the cranial base over the ventrolateral aspect of the longus capitis muscle, dorsomedial to the common carotid artery and communicating to the first two cervical spinal nerves, (2) the lack of the vago-sympathetic trunk, (3) the existence of the middle cervical ganglion (MG) and lying on the lateral aspect of the longus colli muscle (LC) at the level of the seventh cervical vertebra, (4) constant existence of the cervicothoracic ganglion (CT) composing generally from the caudal cervical ganglion and 1-3 thoracic ganglia and placing ventral to the first and second intercostal spaces over the lateral aspect of the LC and communicating to the eight cervical and first three thoracic spinal nerves in addition to the vertebral nerve, (5) constant existence of the limbs of the ansa subclavia (AS) joining the CT to MG, (6) the existence of individual thoracic ganglia from the 4th to the 12th and joining by single interganglionic branches (IGBs), and communicating to corresponding thoracic nerve, (7) the intimate relation between the caudal part of the thoracic sympathetic chain and the quadratus lumborum muscle, (8) the main cardiac nerves (CNs) emerging from the CT, (9) the lack of CNs springing generally from the CG, ST, AS, MG, or individual thoracic ganglia or their IGBs, and (10) the existence of the cardiac branches (CBs) emerging from the vagi and recurrent laryngeal nerves. The ECANS morphology in guinea pigs also shows sex and laterality differences., Conclusions: The general anatomical arrangement of the sympathetic components of the ECANS in guinea pigs extremely displaced features common to rats and Syrian hamsters regardless of the existence of MG and the close relation between the thoracic sympathetic chain and the quadratus lumborum muscle. However, the position and organization of the CT, along with its rami communicantes to spinal nerves in guinea pigs quite resembled those seen in rats. The general macroscopic arrangement of the sympathetic components of the ECANS in guinea pigs resembled that seen in rabbits regardless of the organization and location of the CT. The general morphology of the sympathetic components of the ECANS demonstrated markedly morphological variations and similarities among common laboratory rodents, rabbits, domesticated animals (DNs), primates, and humans. The main variations consisted of the position of the CG and its rami communicantes with the spinal nerves, the relation between the vagi and sympathetic trunks in the neck, the existence of the MG, the location and arrangement of the CT, the origins and incidences of the cardiac nerves, and the main sympathetic contributors. The general macroscopic architecture of the parasympathetic components of the ECANS in guinea pigs quite resembled that seen in domesticated animals, primates, and humans. The autonomic innervation in the anterior chamber (AC) structures might play an efferent role in neural intraocular pressure (IOP) regulation, the center of which is thought to be located in the hypothalamus. In this study, we identified the efferent pathway from the hypothalamus to the autonomic innervation in the AC structures. Retrograde trans-multisynaptic pseudorabies virus (PRV) expressing green or red fluorescent protein, PRV531 and PRV724, was injected into the right and left AC of five rats, respectively; PRV531 was injected into the right AC of another five rats, and a non-trans-synaptic tracer, FAST Dil, was injected into the right AC of five rats as a control. Fluorescence signals in autonomic ganglia,the spinal cord and the central nervous system (CNS) were observed. Seven days after FAST Dil right AC injection, FAST Dil-labeled neurons were observed in the ipsilateral autonomic ganglia, including the superior cervical ganglion, pterygopalatine ganglion, and ciliary ganglion, but not in the CNS. Four and a half days after PRV531 injection into the right AC, PRV531-labeled neurons could be observed in the ipsilateral autonomic ganglia and bilateral hypothalamus nuclei, especially in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, paraventricular nucleus, dorsomedial hypothalamus, perifornical hypothalamus and ventral mammillary nucleus. Fluorescence signals of PRV531 mainly located in the ipsilateral autonomic preganglionic nuclei (Edinger-Westphal nucleus, superior salivatory nucleus and intermediolateral nucleus), but not in sensory trigeminal nuclei. Four and a half days after PRV531 right AC injection and PRV724 left AC injection, PRV531-labeled, PRV724-labeled, and double-labeled neurons could be observed in the above mentioned bilateral hypothalamus nuclei; but few contralateral infection-involving neurons (including double-labeled neurons) could be detected in the autonomic preganglionic nuclei. Our results indicate that there exist a both crossed and uncrossed hypothalamo-pre-parasympathetic and -pre-sympathetic tracts in the efferent pathways between the bilateral hypothalamic nuclei and the autonomic innervation of the bilateral AC., (Copyright © 2020. Background: Cardiac sympathetic blockade is a therapeutic approach for arrhythmias and heart failure and may be a beneficial effect of high thoracic epidural anesthesia. These treatments require detailed knowledge of the spatial location and distribution of cardiac autonomic nerves, however, there are controversies on this subject in humans., Objective: To provide a systematic overview of current knowledge on human anatomy of the cardiac autonomic nervous system., Results: In contrast to the often claimed assumption that human preganglionic sympathetic cardiac neurons originate mainly from thoracic spinal segments T1-T4 or T5, there is ample evidence indicating involvement of cervical spinal segment C8 and thoracic spinal segments below T5. Whether cervical ganglia besides the stellate ganglion play a role in transmission of cardiac sympathetic signals is unclear. Similarly, there is debate on the origin of cardiac nerves from different thoracic ganglia. Most human studies report thoracic cardiac nerves emerging from the first to fourth thoracic paravertebral ganglia; others report contributions from the fifth, sixth and even the seventh thoracic ganglia. There is no agreement on the precise composition of nerve plexuses at the cardiac level. After years of debate, it is generally accepted that the vagal nerve contributes to ventricular innervation. Vagal distribution appears higher in atria, whereas adrenergic fibers exceed the number of vagal fibers in the ventricles., Conclusion: Anatomy of the human cardiac autonomic nervous system is highly variable and likely extends beyond generally assumed boundaries. Objective: To present the distribution of neurovascular and lymphatic vessels in uterine ligaments using 3D models based on the pathological staining of serial 2D sections of postoperative specimens., Methods: Serial transverse sections of fresh uterine ligaments from a patient with stage IB1 cervical squamous cell carcinoma were studied using the computer-assisted anatomic dissection (CAAD) technique. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Weigert elastic fibers, D2-40 and immunostainings (sheep anti-tyrosine hydroxylase and rabbit anti-vasoactive intestinal peptide). The sections were then digitalized, registered and reconstructed three-dimensionally. Then, the 3D models were analyzed and measured., Results: The 3D models of the neurovascular and lymphatic vessels in uterine ligaments were created, depicting their precise location and distribution. The vessels were primarily located in the upper part of the ligaments model, while the pelvic autonomic nerves were primarily in the lower part; the lymphatic vessels were scattered in the uterine ligaments, without obvious regularity., Conclusion: CAAD is an effective anatomical method to study the precise distribution of neurovascular and lymphatic vessels in uterine ligaments. It can present detailed anatomical information about female pelvic autonomic innervation and the spatial relationship between nerves and vessels and may provide a better understanding of nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy.

The inferior turbinate has well-recognized respiratory and immune functions to provide the airway with appropriate warmth, humidification, and filtration of the inspired air while sampling the environment for pathogens. Normal functioning of the inferior turbinate relies on an intact autonomic system to maintain homeostasis within the nasal cavity. The autonomic nervous system innervates the submucosal glands and the vasculature within the inferior turbinate, resulting in control of major turbinate functions: nasal secretions, nasal patency, warmth, and humidification. This review will summarize the autonomic innervations of the turbinates, both the normal and abnormal autonomic processes that contribute to the turbinate functions, and the clinical considerations regarding optimal functioning of the turbinate autonomic system., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Previous neuroimaging studies have highlighted the functional neural correlates of cardiac vagal activity, providing convergent evidence that the cardiac vagal function is controlled by a number of brain regions in the central autonomic network (CAN). However, it remains largely unknown whether the underlying anatomical basis of those identified regions are associated with individual difference in vagal function. To address the above issue, this study used a large sample of healthy subjects (n = 185) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis to verify brain morphometry associated with vagal control and the associations varied as a function of gender and age. Our results showed that high frequency component of heart rate variability (HF-HRV) was negatively correlated with grey matter volumes in the right putamen, caudate, amygdala, insula, superior temporal gyrus, temporal pole, and parahippocampal gyrus, demonstrating brain morphological variation in the right-sided striatal and limbic structures of the CAN associated with individual difference in cardiac vagal function. Additionally, gender and age effects on the relationship between cardiac vagal control and brain morphometry were not significant in the current dataset. These findings underscore the importance of striatal and limbic structures in parasympathetic control, and shed light on the underlying anatomical substrates of cardiac vagal activity., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Autonomic nervous system of the pelvis is still poorly understood. Every year more and more pelvic procedures are carried out on patients suffering from different pelvic disorders what leads to numerous pelvic dysfunctions. Authors tried to review, starting from historical and clinical background, the most important reports on anatomy of the pelvic autonomic plexuses. We also pay attention to complete lack of knowledge of students of medicine on the autonomic nervous structures in the area studied. We present anatomical description of the pelvic plexuses including their visceral branches and anatomy of surrounding pelvic tissues which still remains unclear. More and more attention is paid to the topography of the plexuses specially because of new pain releasing techniques - neurolysies.

Several concepts developed in the nineteenth century have formed the basis of much of our neuroanatomical teaching today. Not all of these were based on solid evidence nor have withstood the test of time. Recent evidence on the evolution and development of the autonomic nervous system, combined with molecular insights into the development and diversification of motor neurons, challenges some of the ideas held for over 100 years about the organization of autonomic motor outflow. This review provides an overview of the original ideas and quality of supporting data and contrasts this with a more accurate and in depth insight provided by studies using modern techniques. Several lines of data demonstrate that branchial motor neurons are a distinct motor neuron population within the vertebrate brainstem, from which parasympathetic visceral motor neurons of the brainstem evolved. The lack of an autonomic nervous system in jawless vertebrates implies that spinal visceral motor neurons evolved out of spinal somatic motor neurons. Consistent with the evolutionary origin of brainstem parasympathetic motor neurons out of branchial motor neurons and spinal sympathetic motor neurons out of spinal motor neurons is the recent revision of the organization of the autonomic nervous system into a cranial parasympathetic and a spinal sympathetic division (e.g., there is no sacral parasympathetic division). We propose a new nomenclature that takes all of these new insights into account and avoids the conceptual misunderstandings and incorrect interpretation of limited and technically inferior data inherent in the old nomenclature.

The results of many medical measurements are directly or indirectly influenced by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). For example pupil size or heart rate may demonstrate striking moment-to-moment variability. This review intends to elucidate the physiology behind this seemingly unpredictable system. The review is split up into: 1. The peripheral ANS, parallel innervation by the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, their transmitters and co-transmitters. It treats questions like the supposed sympatho/vagal balance, organization in plexuses and the 'little brains' that are active like in the enteric system or around the heart. Part 2 treats ANS-function in some (example-) organs in more detail: the eye, the heart, blood vessels, lungs, respiration and cardiorespiratory coupling. Part 3 poses the question of who is directing what? Is the ANS a strictly top-down directed system or is its organization bottom-up? Finally, it is concluded that the 'noisy numbers' in medical measurements, caused by ANS variability, are part and parcel of how the system works. This topical review is a one-man's undertaking and may possibly give a biased view. The author has explicitly indicated in the text where his views are not (yet) supported by facts, hoping to provoke discussion and instigate new research.

Introduction: Due to the realistic colour, texture conservation and preservation of biomechanical properties, Thiel-embalming is becoming the main embalming procedure for clinical courses and research based on human cadaver material. The aim of this study is to establish a new procedure that allows advanced microdissection of small vessels and intraorganic nerves in Thiel-embalmed material., Material and Methods/results: After a classical gross anatomical dissection, human hemipelves underwent repetitive application of 3 consecutive steps: (i) maceration with alloy of nitric acid and MiliQ water 1:10 for 24-48h. (ii) Immersion: the hemipelves were rinsed under tap water for 20-30min. and placed in a water bath for 1h. The nerves become more prominent due to the swelling and increased water content. (iii) microdissection under surgical microscope. To facilitate the organ visualization perfusion with polyurethane (Pu4ii, VasQtec ® , Switzerland) in red/blue for arteries/veins respectively has been performed., Conclusion: By using the proposed procedure, we performed satisfactory microdissection on Thiel-embalmed samples. The combination with polyurethane vascular casting permits visualization of small arterioles and venules in a range of 20-25μm. The method is very suitable for demonstration of somatic and vegetative nerves. Branches of the sacral plexuses and autonomic nerves from the superior and inferior hypogastric plexus have been tracked up to the smallest intraorganic branches in a range of 12.5-15μm. In conclusion, the established combined procedure offers a new possibility for advanced microdissection, which will allow acquisition of clinically relevant information about organ specific micro- vascularization and innervation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier GmbH. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a rapid loss of kidney function resulting in accumulation of end metabolic products and associated abnormalities in fluid, electrolyte and acid-base homeostasis. The pathophysiology of AKI is complex and multifactorial involving numerous vascular, tubular and inflammatory pathways. Neurohumoral activation with heightened activity of the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system play a critical role in this scenario. Inflammation and/or local renal ischaemia are underlying mechanisms triggering renal tissue hypoxia and resultant renal microcirculation dysfunction; a common feature of AKI occurring in numerous clinical conditions leading to a high morbidity and mortality rate. The contribution of renal nerves to the pathogenesis of AKI has been extensively demonstrated in a series of experimental models over the past decades. While this has led to better knowledge of the pathogenesis of human AKI, therapeutic approaches to improve patient outcomes are scarce. Restoration of autonomic regulatory function with vagal nerve stimulation resulting in anti-inflammatory effects and modulation of centrally-mediated mechanisms could be of clinical relevance. Evidence from experimental studies suggests that a therapeutic splenic ultrasound approach may prevent AKI via activation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. This review briefly summarizes renal nerve anatomy, basic insights into neural control of renal function in the physiological state and the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in the pathophysiology of AKI chiefly due to sepsis, cardiopulmonary bypass and ischaemia/reperfusion experimental model. Finally, potentially preventive experimental pre-clinical approaches for the treatment of AKI aimed at sympathetic inhibition and/or parasympathetic stimulation are presented., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common types of diabetes that can affect the cornea. An accurate analysis of the nerve structures can assist the early diagnosis of this disease. This paper proposes a robust, fast and fully automatic nerve segmentation and morphometric parameter quantification system for corneal confocal microscope images. The segmentation part consists of three main steps. First, a preprocessing step is applied to enhance the visibility of the nerves and remove noise using anisotropic diffusion filtering, specifically a Coherence filter followed by Gaussian filtering. Second, morphological operations are applied to remove unwanted objects in the input image such as epithelial cells and small nerve segments. Finally, an edge detection step is applied to detect all the nerves in the input image. In this step, an efficient algorithm for connecting discontinuous nerves is proposed. In the morphometric parameters quantification part, a number of features are extracted, including thickness, tortuosity and length of nerve, which may be used for the early diagnosis of diabetic polyneuropathy and when planning Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) or Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). The performance of the proposed segmentation system is evaluated against manually traced ground-truth images based on a database consisting of 498 corneal sub-basal nerve images (238 are normal and 260 are abnormal). In addition, the robustness and efficiency of the proposed system in extracting morphometric features with clinical utility was evaluated in 919 images taken from healthy subjects and diabetic patients with and without neuropathy. We demonstrate rapid (13 seconds/image), robust and effective automated corneal nerve quantification. The 1970s saw the introduction of new technologies for tracing axons both anterogradely and retrogradely. These methods allowed us to visualize fine, unmyelinated pathways for the first time, such as the hypothalamic pathways that control the autonomic nervous system. As a result, we were able to identify the paraventricular nucleus and lateral hypothalamus as the key sites that provide direct inputs to the autonomic preganglionic neurons in the medulla and spinal cord. By the late 1970׳s, the pathways had been identified from neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract that control visceral sensory inflow and from the paraventricular nucleus and lateral hypothalamus that directly innervate the autonomic preganglionic neurons, thereby controlling autonomic outflow. However, the connections between the two were not yet clear. This paper identified the parabrachial nucleus as a key intermediary, receiving the bulk of outflow from the nucleus of the solitary tract and distributing it to a set of brainstem and forebrain sites that constituted a central autonomic control network. Objective: Neural signals along the vagus nerve (VN) drive many somatic and autonomic functions. The clinical interest of VN stimulation (VNS) is thus potentially huge and has already been demonstrated in epilepsy. However, side effects are often elicited, in addition to the targeted neuromodulation., Approach: This review examines the state of the art of VNS applied to two emerging modulations of autonomic function: heart failure and obesity, especially morbid obesity., Main Results: We report that VNS may benefit from improved stimulation delivery using very advanced technologies. However, most of the results from fundamental animal studies still need to be demonstrated in humans.

Comprised of the sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and enteric nervous system, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) provides the neural control of all parts of the body except for skeletal muscles. The ANS has the major responsibility to ensure that the physiological integrity of cells, tissues, and organs throughout the entire body is maintained (homeostasis) in the face of perturbations exerted by both the external and internal environments. Many commonly prescribed drugs, over-the-counter drugs, toxins, and toxicants function by altering transmission within the ANS. Autonomic dysfunction is a signature of many neurological diseases or disorders. Despite the physiological relevance of the ANS, most neuroscience textbooks offer very limited coverage of this portion of the nervous system. This review article provides both historical and current information about the anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the ANS. The ultimate aim is for this article to be a valuable resource for those interested in learning the basics of these two components of the ANS and to appreciate its importance in both health and disease. Objectives: The vagus nerve has gained a role in the treatment of certain diseases by the use of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). This study provides detailed morphological information regarding the human cervical vagus nerve at the level of electrode implant., Results: Eleven pairs of cervical vagus nerves and four pairs of intracranial vagus nerves were analysed by the use of computer software. It was found that the right cervical vagus nerve has an 1.5 times larger effective surface area on average than the left nerve [1,089,492 ± 98,337 vs 753,915 ± 102,490 μm(2), respectively, (P < 0.05)] and that there is broad spreading within the individual nerves. At the right side, the mean effective surface area at the cervical level (1,089,492 ± 98,337 μm(2)) is larger than at the level inside the skull base (630,921 ± 105,422) (P < 0.05). This could imply that the vagus nerve receives anastomosing and 'hitchhiking' branches from areas other than the brainstem. Furthermore, abundant tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)- and dopamine ß-hydroxylase (DBH)-positive staining nerve fibres could be identified, indicating catecholaminergic neurotransmission. In two of the 22 cervical nerves, ganglion cells were found that also stained positive for TH and DBH. Stimulating the vagus nerve may therefore induce the release of dopamine and noradrenaline. A sympathetic activation could therefore be part of mechanism of action of VNS. Furthermore, it was shown that the right cervical vagus nerve contains on average two times more TH-positive nerve fibres than the left nerve (P < 0.05), a fact that could be of interest upon choosing stimulation side. We also suggest that the amount of epineurial tissue could be an important variable for determining individual effectiveness of VNS, because the absolute amount of epineurial tissue is widely spread between the individual nerves (ranging from 2,090,000 to 11,683,000 μm(2))., Conclusions: We conclude by stating that one has to look at the vagus nerve as a morphological entity of the peripheral autonomic nervous system, a composite of different fibres and (anastomosing and hitchhiking) branches of different origin with different neurotransmitters, which can act both parasympathetic and sympathetic. August Hirt (1898-1945) has achieved macabre renown for atrocities perpetrated during his years as professor of anatomy at the Reichsuniversität Straßburg 1941-1945. Little, however, is known about his preceding scientific career. To fill this gap and to scrutinise whether he really was a mediocre scientist during his early years, as some have purported, we perused relevant historical archives and the available literature. In 1921, after medical school, Hirt started to research and teach at the Institute of Anatomy in Heidelberg, forging a steady career until becoming interim chair in 1935. He then became director of anatomical institutes in Greifswald 1936 and Frankfurt 1938 before going to Straßburg in 1941. Hirt seems to have been well-established in the community of anatomists. Some of his career advancements after 1933 were nevertheless facilitated by Nazi support. His main scientific fields were the autonomic nervous system, in which he produced a relevant contribution to anatomical knowledge, and fluorescence microscopy. His development of a special "luminescence microscope", in cooperation with pharmacologist Ellinger, was an important advancement in the history of microscopic technique. His early research was funded by national and international sponsoring bodies and was neither unethical nor racist. As Hirt did not publish anything after 1940, those who only knew his publications might think of him as a "good" scientist. To simply dismiss Hirt as a "pseudoscientist" would avoid the question-still difficult to answer-of how he could develop from an accepted, successful anatomist to a criminal "in the name of science"., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier GmbH. Background: Renal Denervation as a possible treatment for hypertension has been studied extensively, but knowledge on the distribution of nerves surrounding the renal artery is still incomplete. While sympathetic and sensory nerves have been demonstrated, there is no mention of the presence of parasympathetic nerve fibers., Objectives: To provide a description of the distribution patterns of the renal nerves in man, and, in addition, provide a detailed representation of the relative contribution of the sympathetic, parasympathetic and afferent divisions of the autonomic nervous system., Methods: Renal arteries of human cadavers were each divided into four longitudinal segments and immunohistochemically stained with specific markers for afferent, parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves. Nerve fibers were semi-automatically quantified by computerized image analysis, and expressed as cross-sectional area relative to the distance to the lumen., Results: A total of 3372 nerve segments were identified in 8 arteries of 7 cadavers. Sympathetic, parasympathetic and afferent nerves contributed for 73.5% (95% CI: 65.4-81.5%), 17.9% (10.7-25.1%) and 8.7% (5.0-12.3%) of the total cross-sectional nerve area, respectively. Nerves are closer to the lumen in more distal segments and larger bundles that presumably innervate the kidney lie at 1-3.5mm distance from the lumen. The tissue-penetration depth of the ablation required to destroy 50% of the nerve fibers is 2.37 mm in the proximal segment and 1.78 mm in the most distal segments., Conclusion: Sympathetic, parasympathetic and afferent nerves exist in the vicinity of the renal artery. The results warrant further investigation of the role of the parasympathetic nervous system on renal physiology, and may contribute to refinement of the procedure by focusing the ablation on the most distal segment., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier GmbH. Purpose: We sought to create a 3-dimensional reconstruction of the autonomic nervous tissue innervating the bladder using male and female cadaver histopathology., Materials and Methods: We obtained bladder tissue from a male and a female cadaver. Axial cross sections of the bladder were generated at 3 to 5 mm intervals and stained with S100 protein. We recorded the distance between autonomic nerves and bladder mucosa. We manually demarcated nerve tracings using ImageScope software (Aperio, Vista, California), which we imported into Blender™ graphics software to generate 3-dimensional reconstructions of autonomic nerve anatomy., Results: Mean nerve density ranged from 0.099 to 0.602 and 0.012 to 0.383 nerves per mm2 in female and male slides, respectively. The highest concentrations of autonomic innervation were located in the posterior aspect of the bladder neck in the female specimen and in the posterior region of the prostatic urethra in the male specimen. Nerve density at all levels of the proximal urethra and bladder neck was significantly higher in posterior vs anterior regions in female specimens (0.957 vs 0.169 nerves per mm2, p<0.001) and male specimens (0.509 vs 0.206 nerves per mm2, p=0.04)., Conclusions: Novel 3-dimensional reconstruction of the bladder is feasible and may help redefine our understanding of human bladder innervation. Brainstem nuclei (Bn) in humans play a crucial role in vital functions, such as arousal, autonomic homeostasis, sensory and motor relay, nociception, sleep, and cranial nerve function, and they have been implicated in a vast array of brain pathologies. However, an in vivo delineation of most human Bn has been elusive because of limited sensitivity and contrast for detecting these small regions using standard neuroimaging methods. To precisely identify several human Bn in vivo, we employed a 7 Tesla scanner equipped with multi-channel receive-coil array, which provided high magnetic resonance imaging sensitivity, and a multi-contrast (diffusion fractional anisotropy and T2-weighted) echo-planar-imaging approach, which provided complementary contrasts for Bn anatomy with matched geometric distortions and resolution. Through a combined examination of 1.3 mm(3) multi-contrast anatomical images acquired in healthy human adults, we semi-automatically generated in vivo probabilistic Bn labels of the ascending arousal (median and dorsal raphe), autonomic (raphe magnus, periaqueductal gray), and motor (inferior olivary nuclei, two subregions of the substantia nigra compatible with pars compacta and pars reticulata, two subregions of the red nucleus, and, in the diencephalon, two subregions of the subthalamic nucleus) systems. These labels constitute a first step toward the development of an in vivo neuroimaging template of Bn in standard space to facilitate future clinical and research investigations of human brainstem function and pathology. Proof-of-concept clinical use of this template is demonstrated in a minimally conscious patient with traumatic brainstem hemorrhages precisely localized to the raphe Bn involved in arousal.

Introduction: Innervation of the penis supports erectile and sensory functions., Aim: This article aims to study the efferent autonomic (visceromotor) and afferent somatic (sensory) nervous systems of the penis and to investigate how these systems relate to vascular pathways., Methods: Penises obtained from five adult cadavers were studied via computer-assisted anatomic dissection (CAAD)., Main Outcome Measures: The number of autonomic and somatic nerve fibers was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test., Results: Proximally, penile innervation was mainly somatic in the extra-albugineal sector and mainly autonomic in the intracavernosal sector. Distally, both sectors were almost exclusively supplied by somatic nerve fibers, except the intrapenile vascular anastomoses that accompanied both somatic and autonomic (nitrergic) fibers. From this point, the neural immunolabeling within perivascular nerve fibers was mixed (somatic labeling and autonomic labeling). Accessory afferent, extra-albugineal pathways supplied the outer layers of the penis., Conclusions: There is a major change in the functional type of innervation between the proximal and distal parts of the intracavernosal sector of the penis. In addition to the pelvis and the hilum of the penis, the intrapenile neurovascular routes are the third level where the efferent autonomic (visceromotor) and the afferent somatic (sensory) penile nerve fibers are close. In order to understand the underlying principles of orofacial pain it is important to understand the corresponding anatomy and mechanisms. Paper 1 of this series explains the central nervous and peripheral nervous systems relating to pain. The trigeminal nerve is the 'great protector' of the most important region of our body. It is the largest sensory nerve of the body and over half of the sensory cortex is responsive to any stimulation within this system. This nerve is the main sensory system of the branchial arches and underpins the protection of the brain, sight, smell, airway, hearing and taste, underpinning our very existence. The brain reaction to pain within the trigeminal system has a significant and larger reaction to the threat of, and actual, pain compared with other sensory nerves. We are physiologically wired to run when threatened with pain in the trigeminal region and it is a 'miracle' that patients volunteer to sit in a dental chair and undergo dental treatment. Clinical Relevance: This paper aims to provide the dental and medical teams with a review of the trigeminal anatomy of pain and the principles of pain assessment.

Aim: Nerve-sparing surgery during laparoscopic rectal mobilization is still limited by anatomical constraints such as obesity, the narrowness of the male pelvis, an ultra low rectal cancer or all of these. The transanal approach for total mesorectal excision has overcome the shortcomings of limited access to the rectal 'no-man's land' close to the pelvic floor. The aim of this anatomical study was to define a roadmap of anatomical landmarks for the caudal to cephalic approach so as to standardize nerve-sparing rectal mobilization procedures., Method: Macroscopic dissections of the pelvis in a caudal to cephalic direction were performed in eight alcohol-glycerol embalmed cadavers. A roadmap of anatomical landmarks was created at different levels of section to demonstrate the sites of nerve injury., Results: Extrinsic autonomic nerves to the urogenital organs and the internal sphincter muscle are closely adjacent to the lowest portion of the rectum above the pelvic diaphragm., Conclusion: This anatomical guide for the pelvic surgeon should facilitate a safe and nerve-sparing dissection of the mesorectal plane with a meticulous overview of the lowest autonomic nerve fibres. Objective: To understand the location characteristics of the lumbosacral autonomic nerve plexus and the morphological changes so as to provide the anatomic theoretical basis for the protection of autonomic nerve during the lower lumbar anterior approach operation., Methods: A random anatomic investigation was carried out on 19 formalin-treated adult cadavers (15 males and 4 females; aged 44-78 years, mean 64 years). The anterior median line (connection of suprasternal fossa point and the midpoint of the symphysis pubis) was determined, and the characteristics of abdominal aortic plexus (AAP), inferior mesenteric plexus (IMP), and superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) were observed. The relationship between the autonomic nerve and the anterior median line was measured and recorded., Results: APP and IMP were found to be located chiefly in front of the abdominal aorta in a reticular pattern, and the nerve fibers of the two nerve plexuses were more densely at the left side of abdominal aorta than at the right side. Superior hypogastric plexus showed more distinct main vessel variations, including 4 types. The main vessel length of the SHP was (59.38 ± 12.86) mm, and the width was (11.25 ± 2.92) mm. The main vessels of SHP were mainly located at the left side of the ventral median line (10, 52.6%) and anterior lumbar vertebra (13, 68.4%). The main vessels extended down to form the left and right hypogastric nerves., Conclusion: It is applicable to expose the nerve from the right side of centrum and move the autonomic nerve and blood vessel as a whole during anterior lower lumbar operation. In this way, the dissection to separate nerve plexus is not needed, thus nerve injury can be avoided to the largest extent.

Objective: To analyse pelvic autonomous innervation with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in comparison with anatomical macroscopic dissection on cadavers., Material and Methods: Pelvic MRI was performed in eight adult human cadavers (five men and three women) using a total of four sequences each: T1, T1 fat saturation, T2, diffusion weighed. Images were analysed with segmentation software in order to extract nervous tissue. Key height points of the pelvis autonomous innervation were located in every specimen. Standardised pelvis dissections were then performed. Distances between the same key points and the three anatomical references forming a coordinate system were measured on MRIs and dissections. Concordance (Lin's concordance correlation coefficient) between MRI and dissection was calculated., Results: MRI acquisition allowed an adequate visualization of the autonomous innervation. Comparison between 3D MRI images and dissection showed concordant pictures. The statistical analysis showed a mean difference of less than 1 cm between MRI and dissection measures and a correct concordance correlation coefficient on at least two coordinates for each point., Conclusion: Our acquisition and post-processing method demonstrated that MRI is suitable for detection of autonomous pelvic innervations and can offer a preoperative nerve cartography., Key Points: • Nerve preservation is a hot topic in pelvic surgery • High resolution MRI can show distal peripheral nerves • Anatomo-radiological comparison shows good correlation between MRI and dissection • 3D reconstructions of pelvic innervation were obtained with an original method • This is a first step towards image-guided pelvic surgery.

Objective: To further understand the anatomical basis of pelvic autonomic nerve preservation., Methods: Autopsy of five adult male donated cadavers was performed. Meanwhile, ten videos of laparoscopic total mesorectal excision for male mid-low rectal cancer admitted from January to June 2012 were observed and studied. Anatomical features of pelvic autonomic nerve were compared between autopsy and laparoscopic appearance., Results: Autopsy observations indicated that:the abdominal aortic plexus was situated upon the sides and front of the aorta, between the origins of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. The superior hypogastric plexus was a plexus of nerves situated on the the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta to sacrum; after incision of sacrum fascia was done cling to the sacrum; the pelvic splanchnic nerves and sacral splanchnic nerves were demonstrated; pelvic splanchnic nerves were splanchnic nerves that arised from ventral rami of the second, third, and often the fourth sacral nerves to provide preganglionic parasympathetic innervation to the hindgut;sacral splanchnic nerves providing postganglionic fibers, emerged from the sympathetic trunk, were then joined by the pelvic splanchnic nerves to form the inferior hypogastric plexuses which were placed lateral to the rectum.Laparoscopic observations showed that:abdominal aortic plexus and superior hypogastric plexus were unclear; at the level of sacroiliac joint, the hypogastric nerve began where the superior hypogastric plexus split into a right and left plexus, situated under the loose connective tissue, and continued inferiorly on its corresponding side of the body at the level of the 3rd sacral vertebra;left hypogastric nerve was closed to posterior of mesorectum;denonvilliers fascia was thin, reflective fascial structure, and easily removed together with mesorectum excision because of anterior loose structure., Conclusions: Ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery at its origin is safe.Excessive dissection of the connective tissue covering the surface of the aorta should be avoided to protect the abdominal aortic plexus.Sharp dissection performed by pursuing the outer surface of the mesorectum maintaining the integrity of mesorectum, could avoid the superior hypogastric plexus and hypogastric nerves injury posteriorly, and protect the inferior hypogastric plexues while cutting lateral ligament laterally. The integrity of Denonvilliers fascia during anterior resection of rectum should be confirmed to avoid urogenitalis aparatus branches damage.

To clarify the origin of efferent nerves containing renal plexus, the retrograde neuronal tracing was utilized with a new exact closed injection system with microcapsules. The microcapsule was positioned in the rat left renal plexus, and the capsule was filled with fluoro-gold. Retrograde labeled cells were observed in the ipsilateral sympathetic trunk, especially T12 and T13, and the ipsilateral suprarenal ganglia (SrG). There were no labeled cells in the parasympathetic nuclei in medulla oblongata and sacral cords. These results indicated that the origins of efferent nerves in the rat renal plexus are almost all sympathetic ganglia, such as sympathetic trunk and SrG, and cells in other ganglia may be secondary or accessory innervations.

Purpose: The autonomic nervous supply to the kidneys is involved in the development of several diseases including hypertension. The neural distribution at the segmental vessels and intrarenal vasculature has not been well characterized. Thus, we evaluated the autonomic nerve distribution from the great vessels to the renal cortex in a cadaveric model., Materials and Methods: We performed a detailed anatomical nerve dissection from the inferior mesenteric artery to the renal operculum in 2 human cadaveric torsos. Autonomic nerve fibers were verified by dissecting the greater splanchnic, sympathetic trunk and ganglia. We then systematically cross-sectioned the kidneys in 12, 1 mm slices across 3.6 cm, and stained the slices for histopathological analysis of neural tissue in relation to segmental arteries and other anatomical landmarks. Advanced reconstructive software was used to create a 3-dimensional computer image., Results: Autonomic nerve fibers are located almost exclusively anteriorly on the main renal arteries and segmental arteries, and are absent from veins. Histopathology revealed that the intrarenal nerves continued to track exclusively with the arteries but were more circumferentially distributed. There is minimal nerve tissue around the veins. Many nerves were within a few millimeters of the renal collecting system., Conclusions: The autonomic nerves supplying the kidney maintain their distribution almost exclusively along the anterior surface of arteries as they pass from the aorta to the segmental arteries. The ability to stay alert to subtle changes in the environment and to freeze, fight or flight in the presence of predators requires integrating sensory information as well as triggering motor output to target tissues, both of which are associated with the autonomic nervous system. These reactions, which are commonly related to vertebrates, are the fundamental physiological responses that allow an animal to survive danger. The circulatory activity in vertebrates changes in opposite phases. The stage where circulatory activity is high is termed the "fight or flight stage", while the stage where circulatory activity slows down is termed the "rest and digest stage". It may be assumed that highly evolved invertebrates possess a comparable response system as they also require rapid cardiovascular and respiratory regulation to be primed when necessary. However, in invertebrates, the body plan may have developed such a system very differently. Since this topic is insufficiently studied, it is necessary to extend studies for a comparative analysis. In the present review, we use our own experimental results obtained in the crab Neohelice granulata and both older and newer findings obtained by other authors in decapod crustaceans as well as in other invertebrates, to compare the pattern of change in circulatory activity, especially in the "fight or flight" stage. We conclude that the main features of neuroautonomic regulation of the cardiac function were already present early in evolution, at least in highly evolved invertebrates, although conspicuous differences are also evident., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The intracardiac nervous system represents the final common pathway for autonomic control of the vertebrate heart in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. In teleost fishes, details of the organization of this system are not well understood. Here we investigated innervation patterns in the heart of the goldfish, a species representative of a large group of cyprinids. We used antibodies against the neuronal markers zn-12, acetylated tubulin, and human neuronal protein C/D, as well as choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, nitric oxide synthetase, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) to detect neural elements and their transmitter contents in wholemounts and sections of cardiac tissue. All chambers of the heart were innervated by choline acetyltransferase-positive axons, implying cholinergic regulation; and by tyrosine hydroxylase-containing axons, implying adrenergic regulation. The mean total number of intracardiac neurons was 713 ± 78 (SE), nearly half of which were cholinergic. Neuronal somata were mainly located in a ganglionated plexus around the sinoatrial valves. Somata were contacted by cholinergic, adrenergic, nitrergic, and VIP-positive terminals. Putative pacemaker cells, identified by immunoreactivity for hyperpolarization activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated channel 4, were located in the base of the sinoatrial valves, and this region was densely innervated by cholinergic and adrenergic terminals. Dermatologic problems of the face affect both function and aesthetics, which are based on complex anatomical features. Treating dermatologic problems while preserving the aesthetics and functions of the face requires knowledge of normal anatomy. When performing successfully invasive procedures of the face, it is essential to understand its underlying topographic anatomy. This chapter presents the anatomy of the facial musculature and neurovascular structures in a systematic way with some clinically important aspects. We describe the attachments of the mimetic and masticatory muscles and emphasize their functions and nerve supply. We highlight clinically relevant facial topographic anatomy by explaining the course and location of the sensory and motor nerves of the face and facial vasculature with their relations. We review the literature regarding the anatomy, function, and clinical implications of the complex neural networks formed by interconnections among the lower cranial and upper cervical nerves. A review of germane anatomic and clinical literature was performed. The review is organized in two parts. Part I concerns the anastomoses between the trigeminal, facial, and vestibulocochlear nerves or their branches with any other nerve trunk or branch in the vicinity. Part II concerns the anastomoses among the glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal nerves and their branches or among these nerves and the first four cervical spinal nerves; the contribution of the autonomic nervous system to these neural plexuses is also briefly reviewed. Part I is presented in this article. An extensive anastomotic network exists among the lower cranial nerves. The quality of functional outcome has become increasingly important in view of improvement in prognosis with colorectal cancer patients. Sexual dysfunction remains a common problem after colorectal cancer treatment, despite the good oncologic outcomes achieved by expert surgeons. Although radiotherapy and chemotherapy contribute, surgical nerve damage is the main cause of sexual dysfunction. The autonomic nerves are in close contact with the visceral pelvic fascia that surrounds the mesorectum. The concept of total mesorectal excision (TME) in rectal cancer treatment has led to a substantial improvement of autonomic nerve preservation. In addition, use of laparoscopy has allowed favorable results with regards to sexual function. The present paper describes the anatomy and pathophysiology of autonomic pelvic nerves, prevalence of sexual dysfunction, and the surgical technique of nerve preservation in order to maintain sexual function.

Nerve fibers contributing to the superior hypogastric plexus (SHP) and the hypogastric nerves (HN) are currently considered to comprise an adrenergic part of the autonomic nervous system located between vertebrae (T1 and L2), with cholinergic aspects originating from the second to fourth sacral spinal segments (S2, S3 and S4). The aim of this study was to identify the origin and the nature of the nerve fibers within the SHP and the HN, especially the cholinergic fibers, using computer-assisted anatomic dissection (CAAD). Serial histological sections were performed at the level of the lumbar spine and pelvis in five human fetuses between 14 and 30 weeks of gestation. Sections were treated with histological staining [hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Masson's trichrome (TriM)] and with immunohistochemical methods to detect nerve fibers (anti-S100), adrenergic fibers (anti-TH), cholinergic fibers (anti-VAChT) and nitrergic fibers (anti-nNOS). The sections were then digitalized using a high-resolution scanner and the 3D images were reconstructed using winsurf software. These experiments revealed the coexistence of adrenergic and cholinergic fibers within the SHP and the HNs. One-third of these cholinergic fibers were nitrergic fibers [anti-VACHT (+)/anti-NOS (+)] and potentially pro-erectile, while the others were non-nitrergic [anti-VACHT (+)/anti-NOS (-)]. We found these cholinergic fibers arose from the lumbar nerve roots. The mouse heart is a popular model to study the function and autonomic control of the specialized cardiac conduction system (CCS). However, the precise identity and anatomical distribution of the intrinsic cardiac nerves that modulate the function of the mouse CCS have not been adequately studied. We aimed at determining the organization and distribution of the intrinsic cardiac nerves that supply the CCS of the mouse. In whole mouse heart preparations, intrinsic neural structures were revealed by histochemical staining for acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Adrenergic, cholinergic and peptidergic neural components were identified, respectively, by immunohistochemical labeling for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP), and protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5). Myocytes of the CCS were identified by immunolabeling of hyperpolarization activated cyclic nucleotide-gated potassium channel 4 (HCN4). In addition, the presence of CCS myocytes in atypical locations was verified using fluorescent immunohistochemistry performed on routine paraffin sections. The results demonstrate that four microscopic epicardial nerves orientated toward the sinuatrial nodal (SAN) region derive from both the dorsal right atrial and right ventral nerve subplexuses. The atrioventricular nodal (AVN) region is typically supplied by a single intrinsic nerve derived from the left dorsal nerve subplexus at the posterior interatrial groove. SAN myocytes positive for HCN4 were widely distributed both on the medial, anterior, lateral and even posterior sides of the root of the right cranial (superior caval) vein. The distribution of HCN4-positive myocytes in the AVN region was also wider than previously considered. HCN4-positive cells and thin slivers of the AVN extended to the roots of the ascending aorta, posteriorly to the orifice of the coronary sinus, and even along both atrioventricular rings. Notwithstanding the fact that cholinergic nerve fibers and axons clearly predominate in the mouse CCS, adrenergic nerve fibers and axons are abundant therein as well. To provide information on evolutionary morphological differences and similarities between Tarsiformes (tarsiers) and other primates (Strepsirrhini and Platyrrhini), we examined the previously undescribed extrinsic cardiac nervous system (ECNS) and surrounding structures in three Philippine tarsiers (Tarsius syrichta). We found that the complicated ECNS morphology shows little variation in contrast to significant anatomical diversity of the surrounding somatic structures in tarsiers as reported in our previous primate studies. Further, our comparative morphological data on the ECNS show the following aspects of evolutionary anatomical significance; (1) the traits of the general relationship between the superior cervical ganglion and the spinal nerves are common to the Tarsii and Strepsirrhini, (2) the traits of the general composition of the cervicothoracic ganglion, its communicating branches to spinal nerves, and its cardiac nerve are common to the Tarsii and Platyrrhini, and (3) the traits of the general relationship between the middle cervical ganglion and the spinal nerves and its cardiac nerve are common among Strepsirrhini, Tarsii, and Platyrrhini. Therefore, the general anatomical characteristics of the ECNS in tarsiers retain a primitive state for some traits and exhibit a derived state for others. These characteristics of the ECNS also reflect an evolutionary history without the modification and specialization as seen in the surrounding somatic structures. The amygdaloid nuclei form an important hub of structures associated with diverse aspects of cognition and emotional behavior. Homologous structures have been determined in tetrapods, but homology of amygdala-like regions in bony fishes is presently unclear. Based on connectivity patterns, genoarchitecture, chemical neuroanatomy, and functional studies, we suggest that the dorsomedial portion of the pallium of Actinopterygii is the homolog of the basolateral/lateral amygdala ("frontotemporal amygdaloid system"), while the supracommissural and postcommissural portions of the subpallium are homologous to the extended central amygdala (central amygdaloid nucleus and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis). Nonetheless, the differentiation between these nuclei is not as clear-cut as in mammals, and there is no clear evidence for the existence of an "olfactory" medial amygdala in Actinopterygii, suggesting that the parcellation of one or two amygdaloid nuclei into many subnuclei occurred with the appearance of a true vomeronasal system., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Rectal resection is the most common treatment of rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. The surgical techniques for removing and reconstructing the rectum have evolved significantly over the past 50 years. Technological advances including retractors, stapling devices, energy delivery systems, and minimally invasive approaches, as well as the nerve-sparing total mesorectal excision, have revolutionized the surgical treatment. Surgical exposure and precise technique affect the ability to preserve the pelvic autonomic nerves, directly influencing postoperative urinary and sexual function. The functions of the lower urinary tract to store and periodically eliminate urine are regulated by a complex neural control system in the brain and spinal cord that coordinates the activity of the bladder and urethral outlet. Experimental studies in animals indicate that urine storage is modulated by reflex mechanisms in the spinal cord, whereas voiding is mediated by a spinobulbospinal pathway passing through a coordination centre in the rostral brain stem. Many of the neural circuits controlling micturition exhibit switch-like patterns of activity that turn on and off in an all-or-none manner. The classic view of cerebrovascular physiology has been that blood flow and cerebral metabolism are tightly coupled under the influence of substances, such as H(+), adenosine, nitric oxide, and K(+), which ensure a rapid and matched supply of blood. In part driven by the use of cerebral blood flow measurements in functional brain imaging, it has become clear that astrocytes also play a role in modulating functionally associated changes in cerebral blood flow. The concept of neural control or neurogenically mediated changes in cerebral blood flow is relatively newer, although the presence of such nerves was probably identified anatomically more than 500 years ago. The autonomic innervation of the cranial circulation has both a sympathetic component that arises predominantly from the superior cervical ganglion and a cranial parasympathetic component that traverses the pterygopalatine (sphenopalatine) and otic ganglion. Neuropeptide transmitters such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP), helodermin, and helospectin have each been identified in components of the system. The organization of autonomic nerve structures in the large intestine of chinchilla was investigated using histochemical and immunocytochemical methods. The myenteric plexus formed network nodes of cholinergic neurocyte agglomerations connected with bundles of nerve fibres and localized between the circular and longitudinal layers of the smooth muscles. The highest density of myenteric plexus was observed in the rectum. The different densities of myenteric plexus in subsequent parts of the large intestine is connected with the disparate functions of this part of the gut. The submucous plexus was distributed at several levels of mucosa and was a more dispersed structure than the myenteric plexus. Characteristic varicose adrenergic fibres were observed within the myenteric and submucous plexus in different layers of the large intestine wall.
