The article addresses the issue of university autonomy in light of Lukács' (2012; 2013) conception of relative autonomy. It is based on the idea of the university as a social institution, whose origin is situated in a historical context following the formation of social being, and in which constant interaction with the society in which it exists is established, and therefore, with broader social forces. A comprehensive bibliography addressing the issue of Brazilian universities and university autonomy was analyzed, and the concept of relative autonomy categorized in the first two volumes of Lukács' grand ontology was examined. The discussion unfolds by first identifying that university autonomy is influenced by external factors; secondly, by recognizing the impossibility of a university existing in isolation within a separate reality, unable to interact with society, as it is not independent of the social, political, and economic pressures imposed upon it, thus enjoying only relative autonomy; and thirdly, by understanding that the issue of university autonomy also pertains to social forces that go beyond the regulatory frameworks defined by state sovereignty, making absolute university autonomy impossible from the perspective of the inextricable relationship between the whole and its parts.
