Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by special facial gestalt, delayed development, and supravalvular aortic stenosis or/and stenosis of the branches of the pulmonary artery. We aim to develop and optimize accurate models of facial recognition to assist in the diagnosis of WBS, and to evaluate their effectiveness by using both five-fold cross-validation and an external test set. We used a total of 954 images from 135 patients with WBS, 124 patients suffering from other genetic disorders, and 183 healthy children. The training set comprised 852 images of 104 WBS cases, 91 cases of other genetic disorders, and 145 healthy children from September 2017 to December 2021 at the Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital. We constructed six binary classification models of facial recognition for WBS by using EfficientNet-b3, ResNet-50, VGG-16, VGG-16BN, VGG-19, and VGG-19BN. Transfer learning was used to pre-train the models, and each model was modified with a variable cosine learning rate. Each model was first evaluated by using five-fold cross-validation and then assessed on the external test set. The latter contained 102 images of 31 children suffering from WBS, 33 children with other genetic disorders, and 38 healthy children. To compare the capabilities of these models of recognition with those of human experts in terms of identifying cases of WBS, we recruited two pediatricians, a pediatric cardiologist, and a pediatric geneticist to identify the WBS patients based solely on their facial images. We constructed six models of facial recognition for diagnosing WBS using EfficientNet-b3, ResNet-50, VGG-16, VGG-16BN, VGG-19, and VGG-19BN. The model based on VGG-19BN achieved the best performance in terms of five-fold cross-validation, with an accuracy of 93.74% ± 3.18%, precision of 94.93% ± 4.53%, specificity of 96.10% ± 4.30%, and F1 score of 91.65% ± 4.28%, while the VGG-16BN model achieved the highest recall value of 91.63% ± 5.96%. The VGG-19BN model also achieved the best performance on the external test set, with an accuracy of 95.10%, precision of 100%, recall of 83.87%, specificity of 93.42%, and F1 score of 91.23%. The best performance by human experts on the external test set yielded values of accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, and F1 scores of 77.45%, 60.53%, 77.42%, 83.10%, and 66.67%, respectively. The F1 score of each human expert was lower than those of the EfficientNet-b3 (84.21%), ResNet-50 (74.51%), VGG-16 (85.71%), VGG-16BN (85.71%), VGG-19 (83.02%), and VGG-19BN (91.23%) models. Conclusion: The results showed that facial recognition technology can be used to accurately diagnose patients with WBS. Facial recognition models based on VGG-19BN can play a crucial role in its clinical diagnosis. Their performance can be improved by expanding the size of the training dataset, optimizing the CNN architectures applied, and modifying them with a variable cosine learning rate. Summary of findings: Fifteen articles were selected and allowed a broad reflection on first, the literature search did not return the various automatic methods that exist to date, and those that exist are not effective enough to replace the human eye; second, computational methods are not yet able to automatically detect pain on partially covered faces and need to be tested during the natural movement of the neonate and with different light intensities; third, for research to advance in this area, databases are needed with more neonatal facial images available for the study of computational methods. Conclusion: There is still a gap between computational methods developed for automated neonatal pain assessment and a practical application that can be used at the bedside in real-time, that is sensitive, specific, and with good accuracy. The studies reviewed described limitations that could be minimized with the development of a tool that identifies pain by analyzing only free facial regions, and the creation and feasibility of a synthetic database of neonatal facial images that is freely available to researchers.

Down syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal anomalies affecting the world's population, with an estimated frequency of 1 in 700 live births. Despite its relatively high prevalence, diagnostic rates based on clinical features have remained under 70% for most of the developed world and even lower in countries with limited resources. While genetic and cytogenetic confirmation greatly increases the diagnostic rate, such resources are often non-existent in many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. To address the needs of countries with limited resources, the implementation of mobile, user-friendly and affordable technologies that aid in diagnosis would greatly increase the odds of success for a child born with a genetic condition. Given that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is estimated to have one of the highest rates of birth defects in the world, our team sought to determine if smartphone-based facial analysis technology could accurately detect Down syndrome in individuals of Congolese descent. Prior to technology training, we confirmed the presence of trisomy 21 using low-cost genomic applications that do not need advanced expertise to utilize and are available in many low-resourced countries. Facial recognition plays a vital role in several security and law enforcement workflows, such as passport control and criminal investigations. The identification process typically involves a facial recognition system comparing an image against a large database of faces to return a list of probable matches, called a candidate list, for review. A human then looks at the returned images to determine whether there is a match. Most evaluations of these systems tend to examine the performance of the algorithm or human in isolation, not accounting for the interaction that occurs in operational contexts. To ensure optimal whole system performance, it is important to understand how the output produced by an algorithm can impact human performance. Anecdotal claims have been made by users of facial recognition systems that the images being returned by new algorithms in these systems have become more similar in appearance compared to old algorithms, making their job of determining the presence of a match more difficult. This paper explores whether these claims are true and whether the latest facial recognition algorithms decrease human performance compared to an old algorithm from the same company. We examined the performance of 40 novice participants on 120 face matching trials. Each trial required the participant to compare a face image against a candidate list containing eight possible matches returned by either a new or old algorithm (60 trials of each). Overall, participants were more likely to make errors when presented with a candidate list from a new algorithm. Specifically, they were more likely to misidentify an incorrect identity as a match. Participants were more accurate, confident, and faster on candidate lists from the older algorithm. These findings suggest that new algorithms are generating more plausible matches, making the task of determining a match harder for humans. Statement of the Problem: The concentration of medical students in the classroom is important in promoting their mastery of knowledge. Multiple teaching characteristics, such as speaking speed, voice volume, and question use, are confirmed to be influential factors., Purpose: This research aims to analyze how teachers' linguistic characteristics affect medical students' classroom concentration based on a speech recognition toolkit and face recognition technology., Materials and Methods: A speech recognition toolkit, WeNet, is used to recognize sentences during lectures in this study. Face recognition technology (FRT) is used to detect students' concentration in class. The study involved 80 undergraduate students majoring in stomatology. The classroom videos of 5 class hours in the dental anatomy course were collected in October 2022. A quantitative research methodology is used in this study. Pearson correlation, Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the impact of time and teachers' linguistic characteristics on students' concentration., Results: As a result of regression analysis, the explanatory power of the effect of the linguistic characteristics was 7.09% (F = 83.82, P < 0.001), with time, volume and question being significant influencing factors (P < 0.01). The local polynomial smooth of the scatter between the concentration degree and the use of questions with time appears to fluctuate cyclically and suggests a potential inverse relationship between the use of questions and the concentration degree., Conclusions: The results of this study support the significant positive influence of volume and questioning technique, the negative influence of time, and the insignificant influence of speaking speed and the interval between sentences on students' concentration. Criminal law’s efficient and accurate administration depends to a considerable extent on the ability of decision-makers to identify unique individuals, circumstances and events as instances of abstract terms (such as events raising ‘reasonable suspicion’) laid out in the legal framework. Automated Facial Recognition has the potential to revolutionise the identification process, facilitate crime detection, and eliminate misidentification of suspects. This paper commences from the recent decision regarding the deployment of AFR by South Wales Police in order to discuss the lack of underpinning conceptual framework pertinent to a broader consideration of AFR in other contexts. We conclude that the judgment does not give the green light to other fact sensitive deployments of AFR. We consider two of these: a) use of AFR as a trigger for intervention short of arrest; b) use of AFR in an evidential context in criminal proceedings. AFR may on the face of it appear objective and sufficient, but this is belied by the probabilistic nature of the output, and the building of certain values into the tool, raising questions as to the justifiability of regarding the tool’s output as an ‘objective’ ground for reasonable suspicion. The means by which the identification took place must be disclosed to the defence, if Article 6 right to a fair trial is to be upheld, together with information regarding disregarded ‘matches’ and error rates and uncertainties of the system itself. Furthermore, AFR raises the risk that scientific or algorithmic findings could usurp the role of the legitimate decision-maker, necessitating the development of a framework to protect the position of the human with decision-making prerogative.

Mass disaster events can result in high levels of casualties that need to be identified. Whilst disaster victim identification (DVI) relies on primary identifiers of DNA, fingerprints, and dental, these require ante-mortem data that may not exist or be easily obtainable. Facial recognition technology may be able to assist. Automated facial recognition has advanced considerably and access to ante-mortem facial images are readily available. Facial recognition could therefore be used to expedite the DVI process by narrowing down leads before primary identifiers are made available. This research explores the feasibility of using automated facial recognition technology to support DVI. We evaluated the performance of a commercial-off-the-self facial recognition algorithm on post-mortem images (representing images taken after a mass disaster) against ante-mortem images (representing a database that may exist within agencies who hold face databases for identity documents (such as passports or driver's licenses). We explored facial recognition performance for different operational scenarios, with different levels of face image quality, and by cause of death. Our research is the largest facial recognition evaluation of post-mortem and ante-mortem images to date. We demonstrated that facial recognition technology would be valuable for DVI and that the performance varies by image quality and cause of death. The judgement of The Queen (on application of Edward Bridges) v The Chief Constable of South Wales Police [2020] EWCA Civ 1058 is the first case in the world that examines pertinent legal questions pertaining to this new technology. Automatic facial recognition may be used in law enforcement, but to prevent massive human rights violations, operators should perform their duties within a well-defined legal framework where discretion is kept to the minimum, and strict data-retention policies are followed. Furthermore, human oversight should always be part of an automated facial recognition system to ensure accuracy, fairness, and compliance with the law.

Background: Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic syndrome with a characteristic “elfin” facial gestalt. The “elfin” facial characteristics include a broad forehead, periorbital puffiness, flat nasal bridge, short upturned nose, wide mouth, thick lips, and pointed chin. Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied to facial recognition for diagnosing genetic syndromes. However, there is little research on WBS facial recognition using deep CNNs.Objective: The purpose of this study was to construct an automatic facial recognition model for WBS diagnosis based on deep CNNs.Methods: The study enrolled 104 WBS children, 91 cases with other genetic syndromes, and 145 healthy children. The photo dataset used only one frontal facial photo from each participant. Five face recognition frameworks for WBS were constructed by adopting the VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-18, ResNet-34, and MobileNet-V2 architectures, respectively. ImageNet transfer learning was used to avoid over-fitting. The classification performance of the facial recognition models was assessed by five-fold cross validation, and comparison with human experts was performed.Results: The five face recognition frameworks for WBS were constructed. The VGG-19 model achieved the best performance. The accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and area under curve (AUC) of the VGG-19 model were 92.7 ± 1.3%, 94.0 ± 5.6%, 81.7 ± 3.6%, 87.2 ± 2.0%, and 89.6 ± 1.3%, respectively. The highest accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and AUC of human experts were 82.1, 65.9, 85.6, 74.5, and 83.0%, respectively. The AUCs of each human expert were inferior to the AUCs of the VGG-16 (88.6 ± 3.5%), VGG-19 (89.6 ± 1.3%), ResNet-18 (83.6 ± 8.2%), and ResNet-34 (86.3 ± 4.9%) models.Conclusions: This study highlighted the possibility of using deep CNNs for diagnosing WBS in clinical practice. The facial recognition framework based on VGG-19 could play a prominent role in WBS diagnosis. Transfer learning technology can help to construct facial recognition models of genetic syndromes with small-scale datasets.

The human face is commonly used for identity verification. While this task was once exclusively performed by humans, technological advancements have seen automated facial recognition systems (AFRS) integrated into many identification scenarios. Although many state-of-the-art AFRS are exceptionally accurate, they often require human oversight or involvement, such that a human operator actions the final decision. Previously, we have shown that on average, humans assisted by a simulated AFRS (sAFRS) failed to reach the level of accuracy achieved by the same sAFRS alone, due to overturning the system's correct decisions and/or failing to correct sAFRS errors. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether participants' trust in automation was related to their performance on a one-to-one face matching task when assisted by a sAFRS. Participants (n = 160) completed a standard face matching task in two phases: an unassisted baseline phase, and an assisted phase where they were shown the identification decision (95% accurate) made by a sAFRS prior to submitting their own decision. While most participants improved with sAFRS assistance, those with greater relative trust in automation achieved larger gains in performance. However, the average aided performance of participants still failed to reach that of the sAFRS alone, regardless of trust status. Nonetheless, further analysis revealed a small sample of participants who achieved 100% accuracy when aided by the sAFRS. Our results speak to the importance of considering individual differences when selecting employees for roles requiring human-algorithm interaction, including identity verification tasks that incorporate facial recognition technologies., (© 2024. Objective: Assessing pain in individuals with neurological conditions like cerebral palsy is challenging due to limited self-reporting and expression abilities. Current methods lack sensitivity and specificity, underlining the need for a reliable evaluation protocol. An automated facial recognition system could revolutionize pain assessment for such patients.The research focuses on two primary goals: developing a dataset of facial pain expressions for individuals with cerebral palsy and creating a deep learning-based automated system for pain assessment tailored to this group., Methods: The study trained ten neural networks using three pain image databases and a newly curated CP-PAIN Dataset of 109 images from cerebral palsy patients, classified by experts using the Facial Action Coding System., Results: The InceptionV3 model demonstrated promising results, achieving 62.67% accuracy and a 61.12% F1 score on the CP-PAIN dataset. Explainable AI techniques confirmed the consistency of crucial features for pain identification across models., Conclusion: The study underscores the potential of deep learning in developing reliable pain detection systems using facial recognition for individuals with communication impairments due to neurological conditions. A more extensive and diverse dataset could further enhance the models' sensitivity to subtle pain expressions in cerebral palsy patients and possibly extend to other complex neurological disorders. Objective: One of the main causes of death worldwide among young people are car crashes, and most of these fatalities occur to children who are seated in the front passenger seat and who, at the time of an accident, receive a direct impact from the airbags, which is lethal for children under 13 years of age. The present study seeks to raise awareness of this risk by interior monitoring with a child face detection system that serves to alert the driver that the child should not be sitting in the front passenger seat., Methods: The system incorporates processing of data collected, elements of deep learning such as transfer learning, fine-tunning and facial detection to identify the presence of children in a robust way, which was achieved by training with a dataset generated from scratch for this specific purpose. The MobileNetV2 architecture was used based on the good performance shown when compared with the Inception architecture for this task; and its low computational cost, which facilitates implementing the final model on a Raspberry Pi 4B., Results: The resulting image dataset consisted of 102 empty seats, 71 children (0-13 years), and 96 adults (14-75 years). From the data augmentation, there were 2,496 images for adults and 2,310 for children. The classification of faces without sliding window gave a result of 98% accuracy and 100% precision. Finally, using the proposed methodology, it was possible to detect children in the front passenger seat in real time, with a delay of 1 s per decision and sliding window criterion, reaching an accuracy of 100%., Conclusions: Although our 100% accuracy in an experimental environment is somewhat idealized in that the sensor was not blocked by direct sunlight, nor was it partially or completely covered by dirt or other debris common in vehicles transporting children. The present study showed that is possible the implementation of a robust noninvasive classification system made on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B in any automobile for the detection of a child in the front seat through deep learning methods such as Deep CNN.

Background: Pain in dementia is predominant particularly in the advanced stages or in those who are unable to verbalize. Uncontrolled pain alters the course of behaviors in patients with dementia making them perturbed, unsettled, and devitalized. Current measures of assessing pain in this population group are inadequate and underutilized in clinical practice because they lack systematic evaluation and innovative design.Objective: To describe a novel method and system of pain assessment using a combination of technologies: automated facial recognition and analysis (AFRA), smart computing, affective computing, and cloud computing (Internet of Things) for people with advanced dementia.Methods and Results: Cognification and affective computing were used to conceptualize the system. A computerized clinical system was developed to address the challenging problem of identifying pain in non-verbal patients with dementia. The system is composed of a smart device enabled app (App) linked to a web admin portal (WAP). The App “PainChek™” uses AFRA to identify facial action units indicative of pain presence, and user-fed clinical information to calculate a pain intensity score. The App has various functionalities including: pain assessment, pain monitoring, patient profiling, and data synchronization (into the WAP). The WAP serves as a database that collects the data obtained through the App in the clinical setting. These technologies can assist in addressing the various characteristics of pain (e.g., subjectivity, multidimensionality, and dynamicity). With over 750 paired assessments conducted, the App has been validated in two clinical studies (n = 74, age: 60–98 y), which showed sound psychometric properties: excellent concurrent validity (r = 0.882–0.911), interrater reliability (Kw = 0.74–0.86), internal consistency (α = 0.925–0.950), and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.904), while it possesses good predictive validity and discriminant validity. Clinimetric data revealed high accuracy (95.0%), sensitivity (96.1%), and specificity (91.4%) as well as excellent clinical utility (0.95).Conclusions: PainChek™ is a comprehensive and evidence-based pain management system. This novel approach has the potential to transform pain assessment in people who are unable to verbalize because it can be used by clinicians and carers in everyday clinical practice.

A lack of methods to identify individual animals can be a barrier to zoonoses control. We developed and field-tested facial recognition technology for a mobile phone application to identify dogs, which we used to assess vaccination coverage against rabies in rural Tanzania. Dogs were vaccinated, registered using the application, and microchipped. During subsequent household visits to validate vaccination, dogs were registered using the application and their vaccination status determined by operators using the application to classify dogs as vaccinated (matched) or unvaccinated (unmatched), with microchips validating classifications. From 534 classified dogs (251 vaccinated, 283 unvaccinated), the application specificity was 98.9% and sensitivity 76.2%, with positive and negative predictive values of 98.4% and 82.8% respectively. The facial recognition algorithm correctly matched 249 (99.2%) vaccinated and microchipped dogs (true positives) and failed to match two (0.8%) vaccinated dogs (false negatives). Operators correctly identified 186 (74.1%) vaccinated dogs (true positives), and 280 (98.9%) unvaccinated dogs (true negatives), but incorrectly classified 58 (23.1%) vaccinated dogs as unmatched (false negatives). Reduced application sensitivity resulted from poor quality photos and light-associated color distortion. Purpose: The diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) relies on time-consuming and complicated procedures which are not always readily available and may delay diagnosis. With the widespread use of artificial intelligence, we presumed that the combination of simple clinical information and imaging recognition based on facial photos may be a useful tool to screen for OSA., Methods: We recruited consecutive subjects suspected of OSA who had received sleep examination and photographing. Sixty-eight points from 2-dimensional facial photos were labelled by automated identification. An optimized model with facial features and basic clinical information was established and tenfold cross-validation was performed. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) indicated the model's performance using sleep monitoring as the reference standard., Results: A total of 653 subjects (77.2% males, 55.3% OSA) were analyzed. CATBOOST was the most suitable algorithm for OSA classification with a sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and AUC of 0.75, 0.66, 0.71, and 0.76 respectively (P < 0.05), which was better than STOP-Bang questionnaire, NoSAS scores, and Epworth scale. Witnessed apnea by sleep partner was the most powerful variable, followed by body mass index, neck circumference, facial parameters, and hypertension. The model's performance became more robust with a sensitivity of 0.94, for patients with frequent supine sleep apnea., Conclusion: The findings suggest that craniofacial features extracted from 2-dimensional frontal photos, especially in the mandibular segment, have the potential to become predictors of OSA in the Chinese population. Facial approximation (FA) provides a promising means of generating the possible facial appearance of a deceased person. It facilitates exploration of the evolutionary forces driving anatomical changes in ancestral humans and can capture public attention. Despite the recent progress made toward improving the performance of FA methods, a limited understanding of detailed quantitative craniofacial relationships between facial bone and soft tissue morphology may hinder their accuracy, and hence subjective experience and artistic interpretation are required. In this study, we explored craniofacial relationships among human populations based upon average facial soft tissue thickness depths (FSTDs) and covariations between hard and soft tissues of the nose and mouth using geometric morphometrics. Furthermore, we proposed a computerized method to assign the learned craniofacial relationships to generate a probable facial appearance of Homo sapiens, reducing human intervention. A smaller resemblance comparison (an average Procrustes distance was 0.0258 and an average Euclidean distance was 1.79 mm) between approximated and actual faces and a greater recognition rate (91.67%) tested by a face pool indicated that average dense FSTDs contributed to raising the accuracy of approximated faces. Results of partial least squares (PLS) analysis showed that nasal and oral hard tissues have an effect on their soft tissues separately. However, relatively weaker RV correlations (<0.4) and greater approximation errors suggested that we need to be cautious about the accuracy of the approximated nose and mouth soft tissue shapes from bony structures. Overall, the proposed method can facilitate investigations of craniofacial relationships and potentially improve the reliability of the approximated faces for use in numerous applications in forensic science, archaeology, and anthropology., (© 2023 The Authors. Automated facial recognition methods have become widely used as a way to ascertain the identity of individuals. Yet the methods by which facial recognition technologies (FRT) operate – the machinic performance of the perception of the human face – are often invisible to those under their gaze. This article investigates the machinic perception of the face through an FRT method known as eigenface, in order to both reveal and problematize the ways of seeing that underlie it. As part of its algorithmic processes, eigenface produces an image. This image can be understood as a portrait of machine recognition, making visible the processes through which the algorithm performs recognition and 'sees' the human face. The eigenface portrait reveals a way of seeing that is based on statistical processes of pattern recognition. An analogue antecedent of this application of statistics to the recognition of facial images can be found in the composite portrait. Through a dialectical discussion of composite portraiture in multiple disciplinary fields ranging from sociology to philosophy and the visual arts, this article experiments with providing a cultural and social translation of machine processes of visual perception. The discussion shifts the focus of enquiry towards the aesthetics of the algorithmic process in order to provide an entry point for critique and a possible reimagination on algorithmic knowledge production. Background: Pain in dementia is predominant particularly in the advanced stages or in those who are unable to verbalize. Uncontrolled pain alters the course of behaviors in patients with dementia making them perturbed, unsettled, and devitalized. Current measures of assessing pain in this population group are inadequate and underutilized in clinical practice because they lack systematic evaluation and innovative design. Objective: To describe a novel method and system of pain assessment using a combination of technologies: automated facial recognition and analysis (AFRA), smart computing, affective computing, and cloud computing (Internet of Things) for people with advanced dementia. Methods and Results: Cognification and affective computing were used to conceptualize the system. A computerized clinical system was developed to address the challenging problem of identifying pain in non-verbal patients with dementia. The system is composed of a smart device enabled app (App) linked to a web admin portal (WAP). The App "PainChekTM" uses AFRA to identify facial action units indicative of pain presence, and user-fed clinical information to calculate a pain intensity score. The App has various functionalities including: pain assessment, pain monitoring, patient profiling, and data synchronization (into the WAP). The WAP serves as a database that collects the data obtained through the App in the clinical setting. These technologies can assist in addressing the various characteristics of pain (e.g., subjectivity, multidimensionality, and dynamicity). With over 750 paired assessments conducted, the App has been validated in two clinical studies (n = 74, age: 60-98 y), which showed sound psychometric properties: excellent concurrent validity (r = 0.882-0.911), interrater reliability (Kw = 0.74-0.86), internal consistency (α = 0.925-0.950), and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.904), while it possesses good predictive validity and discriminant validity. Clinimetric data revealed high accuracy (95.0%), sensitivity (96.1%), and specificity (91.4%) as well as excellent clinical utility (0.95). Conclusions: PainChekTM is a comprehensive and evidence-based pain management system. This novel approach has the potential to transform pain assessment in people who are unable to verbalize because it can be used by clinicians and carers in everyday clinical practice. Background/Aims: Pain is common in aged care residents with dementia; yet it often goes undetected. A novel tool, the electronic Pain Assessment Tool (ePAT), was developed to address this challenging problem. We investigated the psychometric properties of the ePAT. Methods: In a 10-week prospective observational study, the ePAT was evaluated by comparison against the Abbey Pain Scale (APS). Pain assessments were blindly co-performed by the ePAT rater against the nursing staff of two residential aged care facilities. The residents were assessed twice by each rater: at rest and following movement. Results: The study involved 34 residents aged 85.5 ± 6.3 years, predominantly with severe dementia (Psychogeriatric Assessment Scale – Cognitive Impairment score = 19.7 ± 2.5). Four hundred paired assessments (n = 204 during rest; n = 196 following movement) were performed. Concurrent validity (r = 0.911) and all reliability measures (κw = 0.857; intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.904; α = 0.950) were excellent, while discriminant validity and predictive validity were good. X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED) is a genetic disorder that affects ectodermal structures and presents with a characteristic facial appearance. The ability of automated facial recognition technology to detect the phenotype from images was assessed . In Phase 1 of this study we examined if the age of male patients affected the technology's recognition. In Phase 2 we investigated how well the technology discriminated affected males cases from female carriers and from individuals with other ectodermal dysplasia syndromes. The system detected XLHED to be the most likely diagnosis in all genetically confirmed affected male patients of all ages, and in 55% of heterozygous females. Interestingly, patients with other ED syndromes were also detected by the XLHED-targeted analysis, consistent with shared developmental features. Thus the automated facial recognition system represents a promising non-invasive technology to screen patients at all ages for a possible diagnosis of ectodermal dysplasia, with greatest sensitivity and specificity for males affected with XLHED. Face recognition systems have been widely applied in various scenarios in people's daily lives. The recognition rate and speed of face recognition systems have always been the two key technical factors that researchers focus on. Many excellent recognition algorithms achieve high recognition rates or good recognition speeds. However, more research is needed to develop algorithms that can effectively balance these two indicators. In this study, we introduce an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm into a face recognition algorithm based on image feature compensation techniques. This allows the system to achieve high recognition rates while simultaneously enhancing the recognition efficiency, aiming to strike a balance between the two aspects. This approach provides a new perspective for the application of image feature compensation techniques in face recognition systems. It helps achieve a broader range of applications for face recognition technology by reducing the recognition speed as much as possible while maintaining a satisfactory recognition rate. Background: Age prediction powered by artificial intelligence (AI) can be used as an objective technique to assess the cosmetic effect of rejuvenation surgery. Existing age-estimation models are trained on public datasets with the Caucasian race as the main reference, thus they are impractical for clinical application in Chinese patients., Methods: To develop and select an age-estimation model appropriate for Chinese patients receiving rejuvenation treatment, we obtained a face database of 10 529 images from 1821 patients from the author's hospital and selected two representative age-estimation algorithms for the model training. The prediction accuracies and the interpretability of calculation logic of these two facial age predictors were compared and analyzed., Results: The mean absolute error (MAE) of a traditional support vector machine-learning model was 10.185 years; the proportion of absolute error ≤6 years was 35.90% and 68.50% ≤12 years. The MAE of a deep-learning model based on the VGG-16 framework was 3.011 years; the proportion of absolute error ≤6 years was 90.20% and 100% ≤12 years. Compared with deep learning, traditional machine-learning models have clearer computational logic, which allows them to give clinicians more specific treatment recommendations., Conclusion: Experimental results show that deep-learning exceeds traditional machine learning in the prediction of Chinese cosmetic patients' age. Although traditional machine learning model has better interpretability than deep-learning model, deep-learning is more accurate for clinical quantitative evaluation.
