- Abstract
This Master Thesis analyses the way in which four Irish memoirs, namely Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes, Hugo Hamilton's The Speckled People, Patrick Doherty's I Am Patrick, and Tom Phelan's We Were Rich and We Didn't Know It, portray their authors' inculcation with two major and interrelated aspects of Irish Identity, Irish Nationalism and Irish Catholicism between the 1940s and 1960s when the authors grew up in Ireland. In order to understand their narratives, theoretical background regarding various fields connected with Irish national identity and identity in general have been provided. These fields include the nature of the genre of memoir, the notions of nation and nationalism, Irish history from the perspective of nationalism and of the Catholic Church, as well as the nature of Irish Catholicism in Ireland in the period in question., Tato diplomová práce analyzuje způsob, jakým čtyři irské memoáry, konkrétně Angela's Ashes od Franka McCourta, The Speckled People od Hugo Hamiltona, I Am Patrick od Patricka Dohertyho a We Were Rich and We Didn't Know It od Toma Phelana, zobrazují vstřebávání dvou klíčových a vzájemně úzce propojených aspektů irské identity, a to irského nacionalismu a irského katolicismu v době, kdy autoři v Irsku vyrůstali, tedy ve 40. až 60. letech dvacátého století. Pro porozumění jejich výpovědí obsahuje práce také teoretické pasáže týkající se různých oblastí spojených s irskou identitou i identitou obecně, především podstatu memoárového žánru, pojmy národa a nacionalismu, irskou historii z hlediska nacionalismu a katolicismu, a také charakter irského katolicismu v dotyčné době., Fakulta filozofická, Studentka stručně představila téma a strukturu své závěrečné práce. - Abstract
In diesem Sinne nutzt

This autobiographical contribution presents some scenes, decisions, and events that were essential to my life’s journey as a psychotherapist, scientist, and university professor. Instead of a linear sequence of events along a historical time axis, the metaphor of a mirror kaleidoscope is chosen. In this way it is possible to look scenically- narratively at important events. Such scenes refer to aspects such as Kairos, facilitating people, what I have learned as a psychotherapist and as a scientist, and what is important to me – the latter also in relation to my own approach, the »Person- Centered Systems Theory«. The chapter concludes with an outlook on desirable psychotherapy and its research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract (english): Rafael Horzon‘s performance of imposture. Staging styles of writing and narration as applied in Das weisse Buch outside the primary text Das weisse Buch (2010) serves Rafael Horzon as part of his public staging practices, which correspond, as hypothesized in this article, to the cultural techniques of impostor performances. Combining reflections on the term ’imposture‘ with promising approaches to research on autofiction, the article shows how the real author Rafael Horzon performs as the autodiegetic narrator of the same name in Das weisse Buch. Peritextual specifications in the form of ironic and deceptive genre definitions as well as statements declared as truths are part of an impostor performance within the primary text. With this playful handling of primary and epitext, the real author Rafael Horzon continues his impostor performance externally to the text and ultimately prevents any access to the ’real‘ person behind this waggish facade.

ARTISTIC creation ,LITERARY agents ,AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL fiction ,STATE government archives ,MILITARY intelligence ,AUTOBIOGRAPHY ,AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL memory - Abstract
In the novel Seventh Autobiography, writer Ota Filip established a wide range of strategies for using quotes from archival documents from the State Security Archive. The writer attempted to respond to public accusations of his collaboration with agents of Czechoslovak military intelligence in the 1950s when he betrayed his colleagues who were planning to escape to West Germany. In the late nineties this scandal led to the writer's son's suicide and forced Filip to write his autobiographical novel to deal with the burden of guilt. By using this quotation strategy the writer was able to reassess past events from the perspective of his current position to follow his personal and artistic development and redefine his identity following this chain of traumatic experiences. Quotation also allows us to follow the gradual interlinking of individual autobiographical motifs in wider structures and to observe the relations functioning between them, which enable the autobiographical space of the writer's literary work to be established. An important and simultaneous process in this context is the development of literary communication between the writer and the recipient of his novel. For the first one, this is an opportunity to share his personal experience and observe how it influences the process of dealing with the problematic past. The main goal of the article is to present the essential strategies for quoting from archival documents in the text of Seventh Autobiography. The author of the study particularly emphasizes the influence of quotation in the field of relations between the actual author of the literary text and the agents holding his security files in the past and the way the disproportion in accessibility of source material on the part of the recipient of the novel influences the process of literary communication. The final result of conducting analytical activities in these fields creates a broader picture of the writer's methods for dealing with his experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

«Il semplice» hosts in its pages texts originated from records and transcriptions: these texts are autobiographical, mainly related to the life of naïfs painters active until few decades ago along the banks of the Po river. - Abstract

38. Lines that reduce : biography, palms, borders

Dolbear, Sam and Dolbear, Sam
- Abstract
Through various cases and instances, this essay opens with the question of biography and the demands of its form: that is, biography's attempt to reduce historical totalities to the page in moments of sudden condensation. It then introduces the figure of Charlotte Wolff (1897–1986), a doctor and later hand reader and sexologist, who appears on a diagram, constructed by Walter Benjamin in 1932, to map his life through his 'Urbekanntschaften' (primal acquaintances). It then seeks to transpose Benjamin's diagram into other linear forms, such as a family tree, a diagram of chemical affinity, and an astral chart, to add one: the diagram as a map of the hand. This opens up a number of temporal, historical, and epistemic reductions, or cases of reduction, in Wolff's work and beyond. It concludes with a particular moment in Wolff's biography - her arrest in 1933 and her escape to Paris - as a final instance of the line, as border.

- Abstract
Cycling Book of the Year - Cross British Sports Book AwardsWhen the ‘Iron Curtain'descended across Europe, Dieter Wiedemann was a hero of East German sport. A podium finisher in The Peace Race, the Eastern Bloc equivalent of the Tour de France, he was a pin-up for the supremacy of socialism over the ‘fascist'West. Unbeknownst to the authorities, however, he had fallen in love with Sylvia Hermann, a girl from the other side of the wall. Socialist doctrine had it that the two of them were ‘class enemies', and as a famous athlete Dieter's every move was pored over by the Stasi. Only he abhorred their ideology, and in Sylvia saw his only chance of freedom. Now, playing a deadly game of cat and mouse, he plotted his escape. In 1964 he was delegated, once and once only, to West Germany. Here he was to ride a qualification race for the Tokyo Olympics, but instead committed the most treacherous of all the crimes against socialism. Dieter Wiedemann, sporting icon and Soviet pawn, defected to the other side.Whilst Wiedemann fulfilled his lifetime ambition of racing in the Tour de France, his defection caused a huge scandal. The Stasi sought to ‘repatriate'him, with horrific consequences both for him and the family he left behind. Fifty years on, and twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Dieter Wiedemann decided it was time to tell his story. Through his testimony and that of others involved, and through the Stasi file, which has stalked him for half a century, Herbie Sykes uncovers an astonishing tale. It is one of love and betrayal, of the madness at the heart of the cold war, and of the greatest bike race in history.

The following essay touches on a highly interesting problem for politically sensitive adult education: What are the ‘costs’ of educational advancement? The answer is sought in biographies of three prominent examples: Pierre Bourdieu, Annie Ernaux and Didier Eribon. The data is based on autobiographically oriented reflections of the protagonists – symptomatically not ‘classic’ autobiographies. The concentration on France has to do with the fact that in the French cultural tradition this level of reflection – not least through the works of the selected authors – has gained a particular meaning. The selection itself relates to astonishing differences in the influences of historical times and the relevance of cohort experiences. The result of the analysis is undoubtedly an ‘essayistic dramatisation’, not a hasty generalisation, but it could stimulate scientific discussion and systematic empirical research.

The shipwreck accounts were written mainly by survivors of catastrophic shipwrecks on overseas voyages to America and India, and therefore belong to the huge corpus of works written in the 16th century about exploring and conquering new territories. Unlike the most of the written sources of the period, these accounts do not celebrate the overseas enterprise, they bring a new, tragic perspective and describe the dangers and misery of overseas voyages. The shipwreck accounts are often seen as a specific genre and can be studied from the perspective of travel narrative as well as from the perspective of autobiographical writing. There are many common motifs and elements in these accounts such as the physical transformation of the castaway, the interpretation of the shipwreck as a punishment, and the motive of time.

This dissertation presents a framework for ‘being through loss’ that reframes the conditions of engagement with grief in relation to the loss of a loved other by illustrating how an experienced sense of being in the world takes and alters shape through loss. Via close readings of research on grief as psychiatric diagnosis (e.g., Simon et al 2011; Shear et al. 2013; Castelnovo et al. 2015) and autobiographical accounts of loss by Danish author and poet Naja Marie Aidt (2019) and American author and journalist Joan Didion (2005), this project makes four main contributions to contemporary debates on grief and scholarship on loss and death. First chapter opens by identifying the “ontogenetic” premise that subtends debate in Western Europe and North America, which, I argue, is predominantly focused on how to define the phenomenon of grief and accurately respond to it. I then introduce an alternative queer performative framing of grief as an organic and entangled phenomenon. Second chapter turns to a body of literature in support of the psychiatric model of grief. Challenging claims made by scholars and experts pertaining to grief as diagnosis, I illustrate the centrality of a biomedical perspective and more specifically a neuroscientific understanding of mental illness to the formation of so called “prolonged grief disorder.” I then propose that a biomedically poised psychiatric model’s reparative approach to the bereaved subject couches an anxious effort to contain life in a sovereign, humanist form, which indirectly illustrates the organic and open quality of being as phenomenon. Chapter 3 of this dissertation engages with Naja Marie Aidt’s account of the loss of her adult son Carl. Grounded in a combined analysis of Aidt’s style of expressing grief and the reception of her book in Danish media and public, I propose that available expert and vernacular models of mourning are unequipped to acknowledge the lost other as being. I trace the origins of this inability to a metaphysical presupposition that subtends psychoanalytic and contemporary models of mourning. By pertaining to the ways in which Aidt relates to Carl after the moment of his death, I propose that if acknowledged the being of the lost loved other alters an ethics of loss. The fourth chapter turns to Joan Didion’s account of the death of her husband John and the life-threatening illness of her daughter Quintana Roo. Based on analysis of Didion’s notion of “world without end,” I suggest that she offers a situated perspective on a world that operates as loss. This perspective challenges a perception of grief as a psycho-emotional state of exception and enables exploration of an embodied experience of being in a world defined by change and unreliability. I utilize Didion’s existential reflections on her tendency to control the uncontrollable for a closing methodological reflection on the challenges entailed in the onto-epistemological framework that frames my overall approach to grief. This dissertation highlights the relevance of feminist poststructuralist and queer uptakes of psychoanalysis to contemporary research on mourning and the field of queer death studies in particular, illustrating how these conceptual frameworks expand our understanding of and engagement with contemporary psychiatry as well as the models of mourning that inform expert and vernacular discourse. Furthermore, ‘being through loss’ identifies the “ontogeny” that subtends and locks contemporary debates in an exchange about right and wrong definitions of grief, and its three analytic engagements with contemporary grief literature illustrate an alternative queer performative approach to grief that not only reframes our understanding of this phenomena, but also provides us with a poetic sense of the organic and entangled qualities of an experienced sense of being in the world.

The aim of this thesis is to explore the problematics of the reception of Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Though this autobiography, first published at the beginning of 1861, is today known as one of the most major works of the genre of slave narratives, its authenticity and authorship have been questioned and denied for several decades, and only by the end of the 20th century has the narrative been recognized as a valuable and truthful personal testimony of what slavery meant for African American women in antebellum America. This thesis then focuses on both the contemporary reception, mainly with regard to the historical circumstances of abolitionism and the upcoming Civil War, and a more recent one, predominantly on 20th-century criticism and the subsequent canonization of the narrative. The key factor of this analysis will be the multiple discrimination which affected the life and work of Harriet Jacobs as a sexually abused woman of African American descent.

The paper examines a three-volume autobiography (To the Is-Land, An Angel at My Table, and The Envoy from Mirror City) by Janet Frame, focusing on its portrayal of the self-construction of the protagonist. Using a narrative psychological conception of the self (esp. by Dan McAdams) and constructivist theories of autobiographical practices (e.g. Bruner, Eakin), the paper demonstrates the ways in which the depicted search for personal identity in autobiography by Frame interplays with the narrative strategies of the text, and relates this identity search to the cultural determination of self-construction and models of identity available in the given society.
