International audience; Collective nostalgia for the good old days of the country thrives across the world. However, little is known about the social psychological dynamics of this collective emotion across cultures. We predicted that collective nostalgia is triggered by collective angst as it helps people to restore a sense of in-group continuity via stronger in-group belonging and out-group rejection (in the form of opposition to immigrants). Based on a sample (N = 5,956) of individuals across 27 countries, the general pattern of results revealed that collective angst predicts collective nostalgia, which subsequently relates to stronger feelings of in-group continuity via in-group belonging (but not via out-group rejection). Collective nostalgia generally predicted opposition to immigrants, but this was subsequently not related to in-group continuity.

International audience; Les individus de classe populaire ? du fait de leur socialisation dans des contextes de vie marqués par l'incertitude et la connexion à autrui ? seraientplus efficaces pour comprendre le langage non-verbal (LNV) d'autrui que les individus de classe favorisée (Kraus, Côté, & Keltner, 2010). Ce seraitparticulièrement le cas lorsque le LNV d'autrui indique un contexte social hostile ou menaçant (Kraus, Horberg, Goetz, & Keltner, 2011). Les contextesd'évaluation sont potentiellement menaçants pour les individus de classe populaire (Goudeau & Croizet, 2016) et la menace conduit à être plus vigilantaux indices d'échec (Schmader, Johns, & Forbes, 2008). Deux études n'ont révélé aucun résultat significatif, notamment concernant l'effet de laclasse sociale sur l'identification des émotions (réplication étude 3 de Kraus et al., 2010, N = 293) ou des vrais et faux sourires sur des photos (N = 260). 62Les participants de la deuxième étude réalisaient ensuite des matrices de Raven, chaque essai étant précédé d'un visage de personne faisant unsourire soit vrai, soit faux. Les résultats n'ont révélé aucun effet significatif sur la performance. Deux études ont révélés des résultats contraires auxhypothèses. La première (N = 523) indique que les individus de classe favorisée identifient mieux les faux sourires dans des vidéos d'évaluateur.ricepotentiel.le. International audience; This research investigates a barrier faced by low‐SES pupils who are on an upward social mobility trajectory: resistance to their high‐achiever status. We hypothesize that, as they disconfirm the usual social‐class academic disparities (i.e., high‐SES on average outperform low‐SES pupils), they threaten the status quo and induce restorative reactions that may hinder their chances of success. Experiment 1 showed that participants remembered less accurately information about pupils when low‐SES pupils were presented as outperforming high‐SES pupils than when the reverse was true. The errors appeared to be congruent with existing social hierarchies. In Experiment 2, preservice teachers assessed a test supposedly produced by a low‐ versus high‐SES pupil who was presented as being either high or low achieving. The evaluation was harshest when the test was produced by a high‐achieving low‐SES pupil. These results suggest that people attempt to recreate the social‐class academic hierarchy when it is challenged.

International audience; We investigate how selection policies—the rules defining access to a valued position—can act as situational cues signaling social identity threat or safety among women and men. College students took a logic test ostensibly determining their assignment to a position of leader or subordinate for a subsequent task. Study 1 showed that when only the test score determined the selection, women experienced more identity threat and performed worse than men. When the policy allowed the selection of women at a lower level of performance than men to promote diversity, men’s performance decreased compared to the merit condition, falling to the level of women’s performance and thus closing the gender gap. Study 2 replicated these findings and established that the meaning derived from selection practices affects candidates’ performance. A third policy that also preferentially selected women, but to correct for unequal treatment based on gender, leads to a reversed gender gap (i.e., women outperformed men). These findings suggest that structural features of test settings including selection practices can constrain individuals’ potential access to opportunities.
