Abstract

In this work, we present the preparation and performance of screen-printed anodes for electrochemical water splitting in neutral media. With the combination of printed electrodes and molecular water oxidation catalysts, we successfully take advantage of a low-cost and up-scalable fabrication method of graphitic electrodes with the outstanding catalytic activity and stability of oligomeric ruthenium-based molecular water oxidation catalysts, offering a promising electroanode for water oxidation applications.

Abstract

An electrochemical DNA detection method has been developed for the sensitive quantification of an amplified 406-base pair human cytomegalovirus DNA sequence (HCMV DNA). The assay relies on (i) the hybridization of the single-stranded target HCMV DNA with an oligonucleotide-modified Au nanoparticle probe, (ii) followed by the release of the gold metal atoms anchored on the hybrids by oxidative metal dissolution, and (iii) the indirect determination of the solubilized [Au.sup.III] ions by anodic stripping voltammetry at a sandwich-type screen-printed microband electrode (SPMBE). Due to the enhancement of the [Au.sup.III] mass transfer by nonlinear diffusion during the electrodeposition time, the SPMBE allows the sensitive determination of [Au.sup.III] in a small volume of quiescent solution. The combination of the sensitive [Au.sup.III] determination at a SPMBE with the large number of [Au.sup.III] released from each gold nanoparticle probe allows detection of as low as 5 pM amplified HCMV DNA fragment.

24. Free Zn2+determination in natural freshwaters of the Pyrenees: towards on-site measurements with AGNES

Abstract

Environmental context Knowledge of the speciation of metals, especially of the free metal ion concentration, is essential to understand the fate of these elements in rivers and their effects on living organisms. On-site analyses are preferred for these measurements as they allow problems associated with sample transportation and preservation to be avoided. In this context, an on-site methodology based on an electrochemical method and screen-printed sensors has been developed in the laboratory and validated on site. Abstract An on-site methodology has been developed for the direct determination of free Zn2+ with AGNES (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping) in freshwaters. This implementation includes: (i) the use of screen-printed electrodes, which provide good limits of detection and easy transportation and deployment; (ii) no need for sample purging; (iii) a calibration in a synthetic river solution that reproduces the speciation changes of the natural samples well and allows oxygen interference to be minimised; (iv) the addition of a background electrolyte up to 0.01molL-1 in both the calibration and freshwater samples; (v) chemical stripping chronopotentiometry as the quantification stage of AGNES. This procedure minimises the effects of working at low ionic strength and in the presence of dissolved oxygen. In the laboratory, the methodology was checked with different natural samples taken from rivers Garonne, Gave de Cauterets and Gave de Pau in the Pyrenees. Results appeared in good agreement with theoretical estimations computed from Visual Minteq. On-site measurements were performed for the first time with AGNES in the Gave de Cauterets in Soulom (France) and the results were corroborated with purged measurements performed in the laboratory.

Abstract

The enzyme-label alkaline phosphatase (AP) commonly used in immunoassay was recently detected at subfemtomolar concentration with a screen-printed electrode (SPE) coated with a Nafion film (O. Bagel et al., Anal. Chem., 1997, 69, 4688–4694) through the catalytic transformation of an anionic substrate (aromatic monoester phosphate) to a cationic electroactive product P+ (phenol substituted by a cationic function). In order to improve the technique, a new cation-exchanger-doped SPE was developed and its analytical performances were evaluated with several cationic phenolic products. The doped SPEs were prepared from a carbon ink loaded with the sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid. The anionic surfactant was strongly retained within the dry ink and it allowed the accumulation of nanomolar concentrations of cationic phenol derivatives to occur through an ion-exchange process at the electrode surface. The accumulated phenol compounds were detected by the voltammetric oxidation of their phenolic function. Preliminary results obtained with AP (detection limit of ca. 10−14 M) appear promising for enzyme immunoassays.

26. Detection of cationic phenolic derivatives at a surfactant modified screen-printed electrode and its promising application in enzyme immunoassay

Abstract

In a recent work,1 we have shown that the enzyme-label alkaline phosphatase commonly used in immunoassay, can be sensitively determined through the catalytic transformation of an anionic substrate (aromatic monoester phosphate) into a cationic electroactive product P+ (phenol derivated by a cationic function) which is thus selectively and sensitively detected at a screen-printed electrode coated with an anionic polymer film. In order to improve the technique, a new cation-exchanger-modified screen-printed electrode has been developed and its analytical performance is evaluated with several cationic phenol products. The modified screen-printed electrodes are prepared from a carbon ink loaded with the sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid. The anionic surfactant is strongly retained within the dry ink and it allows the accumulation of low concentrations (nanomolar) of cationic phenol derivatives to occur through an ion-exchange process at the electrode surface. The accumulated phenol compounds are detected by the voltammetric oxidation of their phenolic function. Some compounds are preferentially accumulated and detected depending on their affinity for the anionic ink. The presence of a large excess of substrate (monoesterphosphate of the product) does not prevent the accumulation of the corresponding product. Preliminary results obtained with alkaline phosphatase appear promising for applications in enzyme immunoassay.
