- Abstract
During the Austro-Hungarian rule, Bosnia and Herzegovina was primarily an agrarian region, with around 90% of the population engaged in agriculture. Economic measures were taken to enhance the productivity of the rural population. The most significant economic measures included the introduction of new and higher-quality agricultural and fruit crops. In line with the goals of Austro-Hungarian agrarian policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, agricultural stations were established, district auxiliary foundations for farmers, the engagement of traveling agricultural and horticultural teachers, the establishment of larger orchards, bull and stallion stations, and more. In this context, in the village of Donji Hrgovi, which belonged to the district of Gradačac (in the vicinity of Tuzla), in 1906, a state fruit orchard was established at a strategically important location next to the Brčko-Gračanica road. The article discusses 36 clay pipes unearthed during archeological excavations at five sites in Osijek: Tvrđa – Courtyard of the Franciscan monastery (2012), Tvrđa – Imperial gates (2016), Tvrđa – Eastern entrance (2017), Osijek – Vukovarska 192 (2014), and Osijek – Queen Katarina Kosača Park (2015–2016). The first three are post-medieval sites in Tvrđa, while the last two are in the Downtown, where a postmedieval settlement emerged on the remains of Roman Mursa after the end of Ottoman rule. Most of the pipes are of Ottoman type and style (17th–19th century). The two most numerous groups from the 17th and part of the 18th century with apparent distribution patterns stand out. The pipes from the first group are characteristic in the area that more or less coincides with the territory of royal Hungary while finds from the second group have parallels at numerous sites in southeastern and partly central Europe but primarily in the area that was under Ottoman rule. Finds of Hungarian (18th–19th century) and Austrian types (19th century) are present in a smaller number. Among them there are pipes with master or workshop marks, often from major production centers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unatoč velikom uspjehu, zbog cijelog niza drugih faktora u Monarhiji dolazi do raspada njezine vojske i konačno raspada Monarhije. Zbog svoje uloge i mjesta u austrougarskoj i hrvatskoj povijesti, nedvojbeno je da spada u njezine velikane., This paper presents the life and the military career of field marshal Svetozar Borojević with the special emphasis on his role on the Isonzo Front. His early life and the beginnings of his military career are briefly described. His climb trough the ranks of the Austro-Hungarian military is one of the fastest ever recorded. After his first war experience during the battles in Bosnia and Herzegovina, his career continued with an upwards trajectory. After the start of World War I, he was sent to the Eastren Front considering he was in command of the corps near that front. Thats where he proved himself as a great military leader and in difficult conditions he was still achieving success. After Italy entered the war on the side of the Entente, a new front opened on the southwestren border of the Monarchy and Borojević was sent as a commander of the Fifth Army to establish defensive lines and defend the Isonzo Front. He succeeded in doing that despite 11 heavy italian offensives, and after the arrival of German units they managed to push the Italians far away from the Isonzo river. Despite the great success, the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved because of a variety of its internal factors, so its army fell apart too. Borojević shares the fate of the Monarchy and soon dies in 1920, forgotten by everyone. Because of his role and place in the Austro-Hungarian and Croatian history, he is undoubtedly one of its greatest military leaders ever.

The Austro-Prussian war began mid-June 1866 as a consequence of power struggles between the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia inside the German Confederation, and which the Kingdom of Italy joined with the intent of gaining territory. The war ended after seven weeks with a decisive Prussian victory, which in turn led to the aforementioned to become the undisputed master over Germany and the nucleus of the future unification of Germany. Italy, although defeated on land and sea, gained the territory she was after. Austria, as the defeated party, was forced to compromise with the Magyars and a reformation of the Empire into the dual Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The war left quite an impact in the development of military affairs as well, since the speed of victory accomplished by the reformed Prussian Army shocked the world which was convinced that will end with an Austrian victory after years of bloody struggle. How shocking the Prussian victory was, is telling by the rapid development of armaments and military organization in the next couple of years after the conflict of 1866 ended.

This paper aims to show similarities and differences in educational and cultural policies in Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two former Ottoman provinces found themselves under foreign rule in the era of new imperialism. This paper tries to explore common phenomena in two areas: culture and education between the years of 1910 and 1914. Egypt was unquestionably colony of the Great Britain. By highlighting the similarities and differences we attempt to indicate the essence of the Austro-Hungarian presence in the Balkans. After careful examination of the crucial phenomena and common mechanisms this paper tries to show the colonial nature of occupation of Bosnian and Herzegovina.

In the last third of the 19th century urban modernisation processes took place in Austria-Hungary. The urban evolution took new direction and created similar urban forms: the urban tissue types were studied in case of more than seventy towns and enabled the taxonomy of the urban types. Among the low number of special urban types found, two are situated in Croatia. The study is about to discuss and define the unique type of Zagreb and Rijeka. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several archival records and documents in the War Archives in Vienna portray the life and work of military clergy in the Habsburg armed forces. The paper presents the life and work of military chaplains from the Diocese of Bosnia or Đakovo and Srijem, Croatia, Marko Hummel and Ivan Kralj, who worked and operated in the Habsburg armed forces. Marko Hummel joined the aforementioned armed forces in the mid-19th century and performed religious services until his retirement, while Ivan Kralj served in the army for a much shorter period of time, since he supposedly had trouble with his superiors and due to the circumstances he encountered in Petrovaradin (Peterwardein). The main purpose of the following paper is to cast some light on a part of the Croatian church history that is frequently forgotten and to hopefully motivate further research of the topic., Nekoliko arhivskih zapisa i dokumenata u Ratnom arhivu u Beču prikazuju život i rad vojnih svećenika u habsburškim oružanim snagama.

This article offers a view from a diplomatic standpoint on the rivalry and disputes between the great powers and the newly-established Balkan states regarding the trans-Balkan railway projects in the 1900–1912 period. It is based mostly on archival material of a diplomatic provenance. Economic and geostrategic issues have always been closely linked. In the context of the Balkans, these issues became more important in the early 20th century, when a clash of economic, political, and strategic interests took place between the great powers and the new Balkan states. The ideas and projects of building trans-Balkan railways were created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mostly within the frame of Austria-Hungary, Italy, Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and Greece, but the Ottoman Empire and other European powers also became involved in the matter. Although these states cited economic interests, the Sublime Porte, which was responsible for issuing building concessions, was convinced that political and strategic goals stood behind these railway projects, and therefore hesitated for several years. A diplomatic discourse on the Balkan railways developed in the 1906–1912 period, primarily between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. However, these projects remained only on paper due to sudden political upheavals in the Balkans in the 1908–1912 period, and particularly due to the diplomatic crisis that took place between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, related to Serbia’s attempts to secure access to the Adriatic via the Albanian littoral.

U članku se na temelju arhivskoga gradiva i relevantne historiografske literature te dijelom i tiska predstavlja i analizira preustroj sigurnosnoga sustava 1915. godine., During the second year of the Great War, the state security system of Banal Croatia was restructured to include the Central Counterintelligence Service (SDDS), which had previously functioned as a secret police, as an independent body of the Land Government. The SDDS became part of the newly established Department IV-B, responsible for border patrol units, under the Land Government’s Internal Affairs Section. The reasons for this restructuring were of a political nature, specifically related to the conflict between military and civilian authorities, but also due to various functional reasons. Political reasons for the 1915 restructuring of Banal Croatia’s security system reflected the aspirations of both its Croatian civilian authorities and Hungary to gain greater control over the SDDS, as it was growing too familiar with the military authorities, which put the work of the Croat-Serb Coalition, and therefore the Hungarian dominance over Banal Croatia, in jeopardy. In fact, a majority of the Coalition’s distinguished members were illegally connected to the institutions that were unquestionably built on Greater Serbian ideals. The war itself was partially caused by Serbian aspirations to implement a Greater Serbian national-political programme. The Croatian civilian executive authorities not only avoided taking legal action against high treason, but also hesitated to bring the accused before the law for fear of losing the compromised Coalition. Instead, the civilian authorities would intervene in favour of the accused so as to prevent the crumbling of the Coalition, which was a guarantee to the regime that Banal Croatia would remain under Hungarian economic and political control, even if this endangered the entire Monarchy. The functional reasons for the restructuring were related to the aspirations of the military leaders to improve the security system, make the functioning of the SDDS better hidden within government institutions, and offer assistance to the SDDS via border police detectives and city police. It also wished to have the Service’s work financed from the national budget and its operative work subsidised by the military. During the restructuring, the military commander of Zagreb was also replaced, but the Croat-Serb Coalition, acting in cooperation with the Hungarian authorities, was only partially successful in achieving their goals. The SDDS maintained its functional autonomy, i.e. dual responsibility to the ban (viceroy) and the Evidenzbureau, and started receiving military subsidies. Furthermore, due to the necessities of defence, the Land Government gained access to financial information that was previously unavailable as it fell outside the autonomy of Banal Croatia.

Da bi se što potpunije raspravila pitanja važna za razumijevanje ovoga fenomena, korišteni su razni modaliteti: kritička analiza prethodnih istraživanja, historiografski i statistički podaci te tiskovine., In this paper, we present a thematic and methodological-theoretical history of immigration in Brazil, divided into three periods (up to 1918, from 1918 to 1945, and after 1945), in order to explain the causes of invisibility of this Croatian community and to point to the effects of the immigration policy that set up Brazil as the “disposal area” of marginal groups. We have pointed to historical events that prompted people to go from Croatia to Brazil, which made this country one of the three major emigrant recipients in Latin America even though not much attention has been given to it by the scientific community or in politics. We then interpreted the statistical data and estimates related to the number of immigrants in the country using a mixed methodology of quantitative and qualitative approaches to assess the current number of persons of Croatian heritage in Brazil. We continued with an analysis of prints, testimonies, and reports that describe the life of the community itself. These offer us insight into lower-level mechanisms that have influenced the deliberate disappearance of Croats, which has become one of the major characteristics of the community as a historical construct. In addition, we have highlighted ways in which media writing and some other instances were in constant dispute over the definition of the very experience of emigration, sometimes with positive viewpoints, but most often with negative ones, that over time became exclusive, thus contributing to the disappearance of Croats-Brazilians from the official destination maps. We end the article with a review of the relationship between the emigrant and his individual adjustment to the situation, which necessarily contributed to the hybrid identity that the Brazilian state officially encouraged, and enabled him to gain a better position and greater rights in the new society.

- Abstract
The author analyzes the relationship between the Bosnian Muslim religious leadership and the events of World War I, including Austro-Hungarian war aims and the idea of a Yugoslav state and national unification. Muslim religious authorities and officials, led by the reis-ul-ulema, Mehmed Džemaludin ef. Čaušević, provided significant support to the Austro-Hungarian war effort, encouraging Bosniaks to be patriotic and conscientous in embracing sacrifice for the sake of their emperor and their homeland, but also for the sake of the Caliph and the well-being of the entire Islamic world. Čaušević, however, over time began to perceive the scale of recklessness and negligence displayed by the Austro-Hungarian military and political authorities towards Bosniaks and started to protest, lobbying the authorities to mitigate the suffering and distress of the domestic population. During 1917 the first advocates of the Yugoslav idea began to apear among the Bosnian Muslims, quickly winning the support of part of the Bosnian Muslim religious elite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
