This article analyses the ways Australia's overseas 'public information campaign' on asylum based around the phrase 'No way. You will not make Australia home' has been adopted by far-right movements in Europe. Considering examples of anti-asylum online video campaigns and activism in a range of European countries, we note semiotic and discursive similarities with the Australian campaign. We discuss the implications of such discursive transfer from official Australian government policy to far-right campaigns promoting a blatantly racist agenda in Europe. We also consider the broader question of the fundamental challenge to international law inherent in the promulgation of information that denies the right to seek asylum in Refugee Convention signatory states. This article critically examines the contemporary applicability of homonormativity in understanding LGBTQ experiences in outer suburban Australia. Representing a departure from urban-rural dichotomies in queer geographical research, this study enriches our understanding of LGBTQ life in suburban areas. Drawing on a comprehensive national survey encompassing 6835 LGBTQ adults in Australia, the research provides novel quantitative insights into the geographic distribution of LGBTQ mental health and wellbeing outcomes. Contrary to assumptions of suburban privilege, the article challenges the notion of homonormativity in the suburbs, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ people in these areas. Findings reveal that LGBTQ people in outer suburban Australia experience higher psychological distress and suicidal ideation compared to their inner suburban and rural counterparts. Additionally, they report lower levels of connection with LGBTQ communities, indicating a dearth of supportive resources in these areas. These insights have crucial policy implications, advocating for changes that foster diversity and inclusion in outer suburban areas. By emphasizing the distinct experiences of LGBTQ individuals in these settings, the research underscores the necessity for targeted interventions and support. This work extends beyond conventional urban-centric studies, offering valuable insights to inform policies, advocacy efforts, and community support initiatives for LGBTQ people in suburban environments. Cet article offre une approche critique sur l'applicabilité contemporaine de l'homonormativité pour comprendre les expériences des LGBTQ dans les grandes banlieues australiennes. Il s'écarte de la dichotomie ville-campagne qu'on trouve dans la recherche sur la géographie queer et enrichit nos connaissances sur la vie des LGBTQ dans les zones périurbaines. Reposant sur une enquête approfondie à l'échelle nationale concernant 6 835 adultes LGBTQ en Australie, il offre des données quantitatives inédites sur la distribution géographique des résultats en matière de bien-être et de santé mentale pour ce groupe social. Contrairement à la théorie du privilège urbain, cette recherche remet en question la notion d'homonormativité dans les banlieues et met en évidence les obstacles uniques auxquels se heurte la communauté LGBTQ dans ces environnements. Les résultats révèlent que les LGBTQ qui vivent dans la grande banlieue australienne éprouvent plus de détresse psychologique et plus de pensées suicidaires que ceux qui habitent en province ou en banlieue proche. Residential location can significantly impact the mental health, wellbeing, and community involvement of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) young people. While research has explored geographical differences in LGBTQ adult wellbeing, limited knowledge exists regarding LGBTQ young people’s experiences. Using a large Australian cross-sectional survey of 6,620 LGBTQ individuals aged 14–21, this study examined the associations between residential location and wellbeing outcomes. Findings revealed that LGBTQ young people in rural and remote areas reported higher levels of psychological distress. Cisgender young people in rural areas experienced more verbal and physical harassment, while those in inner-suburban areas faced increased sexual harassment. Participants were also particularly vulnerable to experiencing homelessness when living in regional towns and rural and remote areas. Trans young people were more likely to attend LGBTQ events in inner-suburban areas. These results emphasize the need for policy changes to foster diversity and inclusion in rural areas, along with targeted support services to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTQ young people. Curracurrang 1 (1CU5) is a rockshelter site located in the Royal National Park (RNP) on the coast south of Sydney. Excavated from 1962 to 1966, the site's rich Holocene cultural deposit has become important for understanding regional Late Holocene developments in Australian lithic and shell technologies. Our comprehensive analysis of 1CU5's faunal remains is presented here, accompanied by new AMS radiocarbon dates and a reinterpretation of the site's occupation sequence. Much of the midden deposit spans from about 2500 BP to approximately 1850 AD, rather than only the last ∼1500 years as originally believed based on less comprehensive dating. A wide range of terrestrial and marine fauna were exploited at 1CU5, with the relative importance of the latter group increasing within the last ∼1500 years. Greater fish consumption during the later period may relate to use of novel hook and line fishing technology using hooks made from shellfish, but concurrent increases in seals, seabirds and marine invertebrates suggest a broader increased reliance on marine resources. By comparison, the earlier period, which coincides with the manufacture of backed microliths, displays relatively greater reliance on terrestrial marsupials. Taxonomic representation suggests occupation of the shelter from winter through spring, and potentially into summer. Analysis of the 1CU5 fauna marks an important contribution to the understanding of Late Holocene economies at the interface of the greater Sydney and NSW South Coast cultural and biogeographic regions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, several jurisdictions have exerted controls over people's mobilities as a way of containing viral spread. In Australia, international borders were closed for almost two years and internal borders were periodically shut and policed as part of strong public health measures implemented by federal and state governments. In this article, we discuss how Australians conceptualized risk in relation to border controls, drawing on a set of interviews conducted in 2021 in which participants were asked to recount their experiences of the pandemic. Our analysis builds on social and cultural scholarship to understand the symbolic meanings and socio-spatialities of our participants' accounts of living in COVID times, in which they were confined within both national and internal borders. Our findings suggest three main socio-spatial imaginaries at work in participants' accounts of life behind closed borders during COVID-19. The first imaginary is an idea of immunity as a spatial property, supporting the concept of geographic immunity. The second is an ambivalent distinction between Self and Other produced through borders hastily thrown up along state lines. The third is the experience behind closed borders of living in a state of 'suspension', whereby risk is provisionally held off spatially, yet projected into the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, studies have emerged to address either racism or women's issues. Studies that address the intersection of pandemic racism and sexism are lacking and the experiences of Asian women have been neglected. Drawing on interviews with 20 Asian women living in Victoria, Australia, this article aims to bridge the gap between studies of pandemic racism and the issues women faced during the pandemic. The article's intervention is threefold, we ask: first, how have Asian women in Australia experienced racism? Second, how have their experiences of racism intersected with sexism? Third, how do they make sense of their experiences and thoughts about the future? Our analysis argues three points: first, the lack of attention to Asian women's experiences of racism obscures the fact that Asian women can encounter racism more than their male counterparts. Second, the lack of attention to how sexism intersects with Asian women's experiences of racism causes them the inability to make sense of their experiences and prevents them from stopping mistreatment. Third, participants' reflections show that there is potential for women of colour in general to form coalitions based on sharing intersectionality and offer valuable insights for feminist and antiracist studies and initiatives. The marine microfilamentous green algal genus Okellya Leliaert & Rueness forms a distinct lineage of Cladophorales Haeckel, and currently contains only a single species, Okellya curvata (Printz) Leliaert & Rueness, originally described as Uronema curvatum Printz from Norway. Based on phylogenetic analyses of SSU and LSU rDNA sequences, we show that the Australian Uronema marinum Womersley also belongs to Okellya, and the species is transferred there as O. marina (Womersley) Wetherbee, comb. nov. We provide detailed observations of cultured material and show that O. marina (Womersley) Wetherbee, comb. nov. differs from O. curvata in the presence of pyrenoids, necessitating a revised circumscription of the genus Okellya and family Okellyaceae Leliaert & Rueness. The COVID‐19 pandemic led to widespread social and economic policy experimentation as governments sought to protect household finances while locking down economies. Cash transfers emerged as one of the most popular policy measures, leading many to reflect on new possibilities for enacting universal basic income through temporary or emergency interventions. We take Australia's pandemic response, and particularly its Coronavirus Supplement, as an example of this broader experimentation. We analyse the Supplement through the lens of an emergency basic income, arguing the measure reflected existing institutional structures and norms, forms of national and international policy learning, and vulnerabilities in Australia's liberalized housing and labour markets. While temporary, we consider how its apparent success might suggest ongoing policy relevance, either as a form of capitalist "crisis management" or as an alternative pathway for implementing forms of basic income. Why did Asian Christian international students return home with a missionary mindset during the Cold War? This study answers the question by investigating Overseas Christian Fellowship (OCF) Australia and its student returnee mission. I show that OCF's returnee mission was shaped by Australia's Cold War foreign policy – the Colombo Plan Scheme. The paper argues that the time-limited conditions imposed by the Scheme established a migratory and educational training pattern which influenced OCF's mission of evangelising overseas students and training its members to return home as Christian witnesses. Résumé: S'il est de plus en plus établi que les études supérieures améliorent les perspectives professionnelles, l'inégalité de leur rendement suscite des inquiétudes croissantes. Les auteurs utilisent un nouveau jeu de données administratives couplées couvrant l'ensemble des étudiants diplômés d'une université australienne entre 2005 et 2011 pour comparer, sur dix ans, la trajectoire professionnelle de publics défavorisés à l'aune de différents critères (position socio‐économique, origine ethnique, lieu de résidence, migration, incapacité) à celle de leurs homologues favorisés. Ils constatent une grande hétérogénéité des trajectoires en termes de revenu et de perception de prestations sociales. This article focuses on what may be depleting people's capacity to ride a bike in cities. 'Capacity to cycle' is here understood not as a behavioural trait or in terms of infrastructure provision, but, taking our lead from Deleuze and Guattari, as a desiring cycling-machine. We argue this offers a way to envisage depleting, or enhancing, capacities to cycle as a working socio-material arrangement that make, remake, and unmake cycling-bodies and spaces. The article draws upon mixed-qualitative research conducted with 18 adults who own bikes in 2019, but no longer ride in the City of Sydney, Australia. Three vignettes draw attention to the opposing forces that support and dissolve cycling bodily capacities over the course of repeated, routine city bike journeys. We illustrate those depleting bodily capacities to cycle for transport involve sensations of the self, pedalling through space. It follows that a shift towards cycling mobilities demands related incorporation into planning of the transformative impacts of the near-at-hand and social norms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The turn of the twenty-first century was characterised by 'spiritual revolution', with claims that interest in New Age spirituality was eclipsing religion and would continue to do so in the future. Since then, scholars of religion have been more focused on religious diversity and the rise of the non-religious. While interest in spirituality, uptake of spiritual practices, and identification as 'spiritual but not religious' have continued to grow, spirituality is typically not taken as seriously as religion, at least in political spheres or by academia. This article examines the history and contemporary dynamics of spiritual complexity in Australia, drawing on the findings of two Australian Research Council–funded studies 'The Worldviews of Australia's Generation Z' and 'Religious Diversity in Australia' and on a recent project '(Con)spirituality, Science and COVID-19 in Australia'. It argues that it is certainly time for spirituality to be taken more seriously in this country and globally, given spirituality's concern with personal and planetary wellbeing, and also the potential risks spirituality can pose due to its association with dis/misinformation, neoliberalism, and violence. Les différentes procédures qui constituent le répertoire de la justice australienne s’organisent, sur le plan formel, autour des trois caractéristiques que sont le mode de désignation, la symétrie et la modération. À ces trois critères correspondent des dimensions sociales. L’asymétrie traduit la culpabilité, tandis que la symétrie exprime une situation où celle-ci n’est pas établie. Le mode de désignation reflète à la fois la nature individuelle ou collective de la partie mise en cause et la volonté, le cas échéant, de circonscrire les effets de la procédure judiciaire. Quant à la modération, elle met en relief un principe général du droit australien, celui de la modulation : selon celui-ci, la compensation théoriquement stricte des dommages (« œil pour œil, dent pour dent ») se voit allégée – en particulier, vers une procédure modérée – ou, au contraire, aggravée, selon l’état des relations sociales régnant entre les deux parties. Cette approche permet également de comprendre comment la guerre qui, en Australie, est de nature principalement, sinon exclusivement, judiciaire, dérive du feud, dont elle constitue une modalité débridée.

Terroir is an untranslatable, unstable, and often undefinable French term frequently used in the global wine industry. This article focuses on the transnational potentialities and cultural transferability of terroir in reflecting on French influences on Australian winemakers' senses of place. After outlining the evolution of terroir in France to demonstrate how and why it appears to have become a floating signifier, I examine the use of terroir in the Australian winemaking context. I thereby provide an example of how this French concept has travelled and been translated by Australian proponents of the term at the other end of the New World of wine. Finally, I present conclusions drawn from the particular case of French-Australian cultural transfers to demonstrate key features of the current state of terroir's globalisation. Although the study of race in relation to both settler colonialism, and Indigeneity and Indigenous sovereignty is insufficiently supported by sociology and the social sciences in Australia as elsewhere, scholars are exploring the synergetic possibilities between critical race and decolonial, Indigenous-centred approaches to theorizing the racial state. Nevertheless, some scholars have argued that the critical race toolbox is insufficient for making sense of how race is produced, reproduced and maintained in settler colonial states. Contributing to this critical discussion, this article explores the conceptual, empirical and practical relationship between race, Indigeneity and Indigenous sovereignty as lenses to examine racism, antiracism and Indigenous self-determination as interrelated, but discrete, issues. In particular, via a discussion of the concept of 'interest convergence', the article examines the synergetic possibilities of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Critical Indigenous theories and methodologies. The authors conclude that rather than 'throwing the baby out with the bathwater' by jettisoning CRT, we should work to deepen and broaden scholarship that connects race, Indigeneity and Indigenous sovereignty in ways that benefit both local and global understandings of the many and complex workings of race. The awareness of secularisation may not have served as a focus for curricula development in theological education, yet it critically shapes the entire educational process influencing values and practices. Australian theological colleges need to be aware of, and alert to their secular, westernised culture that places a high premium on individual rights, personal liberty, and freedom. This article reports on an Australian study discussing the nature of secularised contexts and the relevance of evangelical theological education to these contexts, especially the role of spiritual formation as a key component to better equip theological students to deal with their secular context. The article argues for stronger awareness of, and preparedness for robust engagement with secularised contexts. The main topic of the paper is the possibilities of higher education in sign language in the Czech Republic, Australia, and New Zealand. The primary focus is on introducing all the universities and the courses offered, with an emphasis also on presenting the most significant differences in the organisation of teaching. In the introduction, important aspects influencing the shape of tertiary education in the respective countries are mentioned, including the historical development of deaf education, the emergence and development of sign languages and national legislation, deaf education today, and the education systems of the Czech Republic, Australia, and New Zealand. The text focuses mainly on the differences in the national qualification frameworks, credit systems, university offerings, and the organisation of teaching in different disciplines. None of the fields of study that are analysed omits the interpretation of linguistic, cultural, or historical characteristics of sign languages, and theoretical teaching is complemented by work experience in various institutions and educational establishments. On the basis of these facts, it can be concluded that, despite the differences in the organisation of the studies, the disciplines in focus are comparable in content and scope. Molecular analyses have indicated that several Australian taxa previously identified as the red alga Plocamium cartilagineum do not group with that species as known from its northern hemisphere type locality. One of these species-level genetic groups corresponds precisely with Plocamium pusillum, a species described by Sonder in 1845 based on Preiss specimens from south-western Australia, but regarded as a heterotypic synonym of P. cartilagineum in recent morphology-based treatments. A specimen of P. pusillum in the Melbourne Herbarium (MEL) has been examined and designated as lectotype; its morphology agrees with recently collected specimens included in molecular analyses and is clearly shown to differ from authentic P. cartilagineum. Plocamium pusillum is therefore resurrected and is characterized genetically and morphologically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The emergence of New Age spirituality in Western cultures during the 1960s and 1970s has been described as a rejection of traditional values, fuelled by disillusionment with the Christian church and a feeling of alienation in mainstream social and work environments. While New Age has been characterised as a 'turning away' from dominant cultural ideologies, there is comparatively less discussion about what New Age actors are 'turning towards' in their pursuit of subjective spirituality. Research from Australia demonstrates that individuals were primarily searching for deeper meaning and looking for spiritual answers when they first engaged with New Age pursuits. Habermas coined the term post-secularism to reflect a time period in which religions are given a more central part in social and political life. Even if there is more openness to religion, many religious groups would claim that Western societies are nevertheless still dominated by secularism and want to ensure that freedom of religion and belief remain protected and promoted. This article explores the recent Australian Religious Freedom Review as a case study of the social tension between freedom for and from religion to argue that we might have moved beyond a post-secular sphere in this country. In this phase, what is meant by freedom of religion has shifted from a focus in having all religious groups being able to freely practice their faith to a focus by some mainstream religions to remain free to discriminate on the basis of their faith. We review current zooarchaeological practice in Australia, identifying major research themes and key methodological gaps where opportunities exist for the development of Australian zooarchaeology as a discipline. We demonstrate that marsupial remains form a significant component of Australian zooarchaeological assemblages, yet high resolution taxonomic identification of these remains continues to prove challenging, owing to a combination of high species diversity and few resources which provide diagnostic criteria for discriminating morphologically similar, but ecologically variable taxa. The lack of robust protocols for discriminating marsupial taxa significantly impacts our ability to effectively integrate zooarchaeological data into broader narratives of Aboriginal colonisation, resilience and adaptation across Australia. Publication of identification protocols would help refine and standardise diagnostic criteria used between analysts, improve the methodological transparency of zooarchaeological analysis and provide resources for the training of a new generation of specialists. A range of opportunities currently exist, utilising qualitative and quantitative techniques, to significantly contribute towards the methodological robustness of zooarchaeological practice in Australia. The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) is a Brazilian neo-Pentecostal megachurch. Over the past 40 years, it has established branches in over 100 countries among the economically and socially marginalised. This holds true in Australia, where congregants are disenfranchised migrants from diverse ethnic backgrounds and (former) refugees. Drawing on 2 years of ethnographic research in the UCKG's Australian headquarters, this article explores why a Brazilian church, with a seemingly disagreeable character, attracts a multicultural migrant congregation in Australia. I argue that the UCKG is attractive to these congregants because it provides a space where its followers' ethnicity is accepted; its cosmovision is easily translated to its congregation's diverse spiritual sensibilities; and it offers 'pioneering techniques' to overcome life obstacles for those on the margins of Australian society. This work contributes to scholarly literature concerning Brazilian religiosity outside of Brazil, and the role religion plays in migrant settlement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To describe political advocacy and scientific debate about headspace, a non-governmental organisational (NGO) substantially funded by the Australian federal government that has significantly impacted the youth mental healthcare landscape. Access Open Minds is a Canadian clinical research initiative for youth mental health partially based on headspace. Lessons from the Australian experience may thus prove useful for Canadian stakeholders. Method: The Australian healthcare system, mental health policy and governance for youth mental healthcare are contextually described. The structure and promulgation of the headspace NGO is detailed, as a parallel provider of primary mental healthcare outside of existing public and private mental health services. A review of the existing research on the evaluation of headspace was conducted. Results: Headspace has expanded rapidly due to successful political advocacy on behalf of the youth early intervention model, with limited coordination in terms of governance, planning and implementation with existing mental health services. In spite of consuming considerable resources, there has been limited evidence of effectiveness. Conclusions: Canadians should be wary of large youth programs that operate outside mainstream mental healthcare because of similar dangers such as poor co-ordination with existing government-funded services, duplication of care, the substantial consumption of resources, and limited evaluation of outcomes. As Access Open Minds is a clinical research project, there is the opportunity for Canada to evaluate the efficacy of the model before further adoption by governments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article develops ideas of hydro-geographies at the scale of everyday embodied experiences to better understand the relationships between migration, household sustainability and ethics. Framed within a feminist visceral approach, the article attends to the embodied dimensions of domesticated water. We draw on insights from the concepts of transcoporeality, translocality and moral terrain to illustrate how responsibility to domesticated water is felt in and through working arrangements of technologies, bodies and ideas about water and domestic life. Fifteen Iranian immigrant women consented to participate in a sensory ethnography. The visceral analysis outlines embodied insights into the very material ways participants understand themselves, places and obligations to water and others. As participants spoke about how domesticated water moves across bodies, attention is paid to how the permeability of boundaries is made felt, or not. We focus on how visceral relaxation and disgust may close or open moral gateways, respectively. This article contributes to the consideration of the politics of household sustainability and how embodiment offers possibilities to rethink domesticated water as more than a commodified resource. Globally, 5 million students annually leave both high school and their homes for the first time in pursuit of a higher education, while some others may be transiting to a new country in search of an international education. If tertiary students are unable to access suitable accommodation, this could have several implications. First is the significant role of housing on one's health, wellbeing, and quality of life as this can be an additional cause for stress and worry. Second, there is ample evidence that attests to the fact that students with access to settled housing have better educational outcomes than those with less settled housing. This paper examines tertiary students' housing needs and preferences, towards providing them with suitable and stable accommodation during their study duration. A 26-item online questionnaire was administered to students enrolled at two regional universities in Australia. Participants were asked to choose their needs and preferences from eleven housing attributes, and rate them from 'most important' to 'least important' need. The results were analysed using SPSS. The results of the survey from both universities indicate that students' most important need was for affordable accommodation (i.e. the lowest cost for rent) and accommodation offering recreational facilities rated the least important. This study fills a gap in understanding student priorities in housing in regional universities and offers insight to individuals and institutions involved in or intending to develop student accommodation on how to properly target and satisfy this sector. Migration studies have investigated the complex relationship between transnational ties and integration among long-term immigrants. However, discussions about temporary migrant motives for maintaining transnational ties remain under-explored. Focusing on how Chinese Working Holiday Makers (WHMs) see integration and the 'convertibility' of temporary experiences in Australia, this article highlights that temporary migrants are not just concerned with achieving integration in the present but also better chances in the future. Such concerns are oriented toward both receiving and home countries. To be specific, WHMs consciously maintain transnational ties to sustain their integration processes or in the event of a return home. Meanwhile, they try to stay in their host countries in order to allay the stigmas attached to them and to address other cultural concerns (such as saving 'face'). Because they may return to their home countries, they accumulate socio-cultural capital (e.g., English proficiency and overseas experience) while in Australia that they hope to employ in the future. Belonging in Australian national parks has long been associated with universal ideas of nativeness or naturalness. However, these delineations have been critiqued as rooted in western, dualistic understandings of nature and culture that do not allow for other ways of conceptualising the world or for the agency of nonhumans. This paper argues for reconceptualising belonging as an ontological co-becoming where multiple contingent belongings co-emerge with bodies, worlds and place. To show how belonging co-becomes, I examine human–tree relations surrounding a special and sacred tree in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Australia, the Angophora costata. I tell three stories that shed light on the multiple ways performances of belonging are entangled with histories, stories, spirits, and present and absent humans and nonhumans. In doing so, I show how belonging is a more-than-human practice where ideas of native and natural are questioned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mobilities of increasing numbers of 'middling' migrants from Asia to Australia involve complex trajectories that encompass multiple transitions across statuses and places as well as ambiguities around temporariness and permanence. This article argues that during these 'staggered' migrations, intersections between multiple 'timescales' – institutional, biographic and everyday – produce specific experiences of time for migrants that interrupt teleological imaginaries of both life transitions and migration outcomes. Drawing on data from in-depth narrative interviews with middling migrants, this article focuses on two such temporal experiences, 'contingent temporality' and 'indentured temporality', and seeks to demonstrate how these experiences are produced through the overlaps and intersections of institutional, biographical and everyday timescales. The article seeks to advance empirical understandings of the temporalities of new forms of migrant mobility between Asia and Australia, as well as to contribute new conceptual approaches to scholarship on migration and time.
