Remote learning programs were rapidly implemented throughout the COVID-19 pandemic during school closures. We drew on an ongoing longitudinal study of a cohort of children in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana to survey children (N = 1,844), their caregivers, and teachers to examine learning experiences during the ten months of school closures in Ghana in 2020. We documented inequalities in remote learning opportunities offered by public and private schools, as well as who accessed remote learning and the quality of learning opportunities. In addition, controlling for pre-pandemic learning outcomes, we documented learning gaps, with food insecure, low socioeconomic status, and public-school children performing significantly worse than their peers (0.2-0.3 SD gap). Results highlight pandemic-related inequalities in a cohort of Ghanaian primary schoolchildren.

Abstract Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remains the leading cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide. The pathogenesis of DKD is influenced by functional, histopathological, and immune mechanisms, including NLRP3 inflammasome activity and oxidative stress. The sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have shown metabolic benefits and the ability to slow the progression of DKD in several clinical studies over the years. Recent studies suggest that the antidiabetic activity also extends to inhibition of the inflammatory response, including modulation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, reduction of pro-inflammatory markers and reduction of oxidative stress. Here we review the efficacy of SGLT2i in the treatment of CKD and discuss the role of the inflammatory response in the development of DKD, including its relationship to the NLRP3 inflammasome and oxidative stress.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract Facile, durable and biocompatible integration of hybrid Lab‐on‐a‐Chip devices has remained an important challenge in microengineering. Here, the robust and seamless integration of off‐stoichiometry thiol‐ene‐epoxy (OSTE+) thermosets with a diverse range of thermoplastic and glass materials is demonstrated. While direct bonding offers sturdy proprieties for the majority of the material hybrids (up to 1.5 MPa), further surface priming enhances the bonding strength for those of lower surface energy (up to seven‐fold). Using microfluidic devices with a unique configuration of chambers and microchannels down to 100 µm, the impact of various bonding methods on their fluidic functionality is further shown. To investigate the utility of hybrid devices for pharmacological and toxicological studies, both pristine and primed devices are benchmarked against polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with regard to cell biocompatibility and drug absorption. While being on par with PDMS in terms of cell viability, pristine OSTE+ devices show an 11‐fold lower absorption of hydrophobic drug molecules. Although surface priming enhances the bonding strength, it compromises other criteria in device performance and biological applications. Combined, results demonstrate a novel integration approach for facile manufacturing of hybrid microfluidic devices using a material toolbox suitable for cell and pharmaceutical studies.

Purpose: This study analyzed the ability of Black Soldier Flies Larvae (BSFL) in reducing grease waste and the effect of variation in feed composition on the growth rate effect of larvae age at 8 days, 12 days, and 16 days.Method: Before reaching the specified age (8, 12, or 16 days), the larvae are fed a mixture of expired bread and expired milk. BSFL at ages 8 days, 12 days, and 16 days are fed by pure grease waste or the mixing of grease waste and expired milk until turned into 20-day-old larvae. Then waste reduction is analyzed based on parameters such as feed consumption, waste reduction index, the efficiency of conversion of digested feed, and larvae biomass. Univariate analysis using SPSS was conducted to determine the significance of differences in waste reduction, feed consumption, conversion efficiency of digested feed, and larvae biomass among the experimental groups.Results: The 16-day-old larvae fed with pure grease waste achieved a waste reduction index of 20.08 grams per day. Moreover, variations in feed composition influenced the growth rate of BSFL, with larvae fed a mixture of grease waste and expired milk exhibiting the largest weight (43 mg) and length (1.4 cm) among the 16-day-old larvae.Conclusion: Black Soldier Fly Larvae at 16 days old displayed remarkable effectiveness in reducing grease waste from restaurants. This study underscores the potential of BSFL as a sustainable waste management and recycling solution for organic waste, particularly in the context of food waste.

Abstract Background To assess oxidative effects induced by a high-calorie diet on the retina of Wistar rats and test the antioxidative effects of carnosine supplementation. Methods Wistar rats were randomly divided into the following groups: standard diet (SD), high-calorie diet (HcD), standard diet + carnosine (SD + Car), and high-calorie diet + carnosine (HcD + Car). The body weight, adiposity index, plasma glucose, total lipids, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), uric acid, creatinine, and triglycerides of the animals were evaluated. The retinas were analyzed for markers of oxidative stress. Hydrogen peroxide production was assessed by 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCF) oxidation. The total glutathione (tGSH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), protein carbonyl, and sulfhydryl groups of the antioxidant system were analyzed. The COVID-19 pandemic led to extended school closures globally. Access to remote learning opportunities during this time was vastly unequal within and across countries. Higher-quality early childhood education (ECE) can improve later academic outcomes, but longer-term effects during crises are unknown. This study provides the first experimental evidence of how previously attending a higher-quality ECE program affected child engagement in remote learning and academic scores during pandemic-related school closures in Ghana. Children (N = 1668; 50.1% male; M[subscript age] = 10.1 years; all Ghanaian nationals) who attended higher-quality ECE at age 4 or 5 years had greater engagement in remote learning (d = 0.14) in October 2020, but not better language and literacy and math scores. Previous exposure to higher-quality ECE may support educational engagement during crises.

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rising, especially in elderly individuals. The overlap between CKD and aging is associated with body composition modification, metabolic abnormalities, and malnutrition. Renal care guidelines suggest treating CKD patient with a low-protein diet according to the renal disease stage. On the other hand, geriatric care guidelines underline the need for a higher protein intake to prevent malnutrition. The challenge remains of how to reconcile a low dietary protein intake with insuring a favorable nutritional status in geriatric CKD populations. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effect of a low-protein adequate energy intake (LPAE) diet on nutritional risk and nutritional status among elderly CKD (stage 3–5) patients and then to assess its impact on CKD metabolic abnormalities. To this purpose, 42 subjects [age ≥ 65, CKD stage 3–5 in conservative therapy, and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) ≥ 98] were recruited and the LPAE diet was prescribed. At baseline and after 6 months of the LPAE diet, the following data were collected: age, sex, biochemical parameters, anthropometric measurements, body composition, and the GNRI. According to their dietary compliance, the subjects were divided into groups: compliant and non-compliant. For the compliant group, the results obtained show no increased malnutrition risk incidence but, rather, an improvement in body composition and metabolic parameters, suggesting that the LPAE diet can provide a safe tool in geriatric CKD patients.

Introdução/Objetivo: A hepatite A é uma doença infectocontagiosa causada pelo vírus da hepatite A (HAV), que é transmitido mormente via fecal-oral, incluindo sexo oral-anal. Entre usuários de profilaxia pré-exposição ao HIV (PrEP HIV) no Brasil, dos quais 83% são gays e HSH, recomenda-se avaliar a susceptibilidade ao HAV por sorologia para fins de prevenção. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a prevalência de anticorpos Anti-HAV IgG/total entre gays e HSH em uso de PrEP HIV e caracterizar suas práticas sexuais. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado entre agosto/2021 e junho/2023, envolvendo gays e HSH ≥ 18 anos, usuários de PrEP HIV, atendidos no principal Serviço de Atendimento Especializado (SAE) do Rio Grande do Norte. Através de um instrumento de coleta padronizado, coletaram-se dados do prontuário sobre aspectos socioeconômicos, práticas sexuais e o resultado da sorologia Anti-HAV IgG/total. O tamanho amostral foi calculado em 185 participantes, com base em prevalência prévia de 62,3% de Anti-HAV IgG/total entre HSH, limite de confiança de ± 7%, erro tipo-α = 5% e erro tipo-β = 20%. Os resultados foram apresentados em proporções e seus intervalos de confiança de 95%. O estudo foi aprovado no comitê de ética sob CAAE n° 31650520.0.2005.5292. Resultados: Participaram do estudo 287 usuários (49,5% daqueles atualmente atendidos no SAE). A mediana de idade foi de 31 anos [IQ = 27-36). Declararam-se negros em 53,7% [43,9-62,7%] e brancos em 45,3% [39,7-50,9%]. Em sua maioria, eram solteiros (82,6% [78,4-86,8%]), residentes em Natal (76,7% [71,8-81,5%]) e homens cis (98,6% [97,2-100%]), tinham > 11 anos de estudo (87,8% [84,0-91,6%]) e renda ≤ 3 salários mínimos (59,9% [54,0-65,5%]). Na inclusão do estudo 64,5% [54,0-75,3%] já usavam PrEP HIV há, pelo menos, 6 meses. Em 62,4% [56,4-68,4%] dos participantes, os anticorpos Anti-HAV IgG/total foram reagentes. Sexo anal desprotegido foi relatado por 83,9% [79,0-88,0%] dos usuários. Em algum momento da vida, frequentar sauna foi relatado por 39,0% [33,1-45,3%], usar sex toys com parcerias em 22,3% [17,4-27,9%] e praticar fisting em 19,9% [15,3-25,1%] dos usuários. Práticas de fingering e sexo oral-anal em algum momento da vida foram relatados por 59,9% [54,0-65,2%] e 92,7% [89,2-95,5%], respectivamente. Conclusão: A prevalência de imunidade contra o HAV entre a população de gays e HSH em uso de PrEP HIV está abaixo dos níveis estimados (> 70%) necessários para impedir transmissão viral sustentada e futuros surtos.

AimThis study aimed to evaluate if physical activity is associated with systemic and cellular immunometabolic responses, in young adults after mild-to-moderate COVID-19 infection.MethodsMild- to- moderate post-COVID-19 patients (70.50 ± 43.10 days of diagnosis; age: 29.4 (21.9– 34.9) years; BMI: 25.5 ± 4.3 kg m2 n = 20) and healthy age-matched controls (age: 29.3 (21.2 – 32.6) years; BMI: 25.4 ± 4.7 kg m2; n = 20) were evaluated. Physical activity levels (PAL), body composition, dietary habits, muscular and pulmonary function, mental health, sleep quality, metabolic parameters, immune phenotypic characterization, stimulated whole blood and PBMC culture (cytokine production), mRNA, and mitochondrial respiration in PBMCs were evaluated. ResultsThe post-COVID-19 group exhibited lower levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (p = 0.038); therefore, all study comparisons were performed with adjustment for MVPA. A bacia sedimentar do Tacutu situa-se na fronteira do Brasil com a República Cooperativa da Guiana e tem se mostrado como um importante local para estudos paleobotânicos. Este projeto tem como objetivo desenvolver um banco de dados com morfoanatomia de folhas de angiospermas atuais para fins de comparação com folhas de angiospermas fósseis (Cenozoicas) recuperadas da Bacia sedimentar do Tacutu, Roraima. Assim, a proposta, além de fornecer informações sobre a flora da Amazônia pré-histórica, também visa realizar comparações com as espécies atuais, mostrando relações com seus ancestrais. Ao todo foram coletadas, processadas e descritas 12 espécies que ocorrem no "lavrado" de Roraima, dentre elas: Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth, Davilla aspera (Aubl.) Benoist, Cassia moschata Kunth, Psidium guinense Sw, Bauhinia sp L. Bauhinia forficata Link, Casearia sylvestris Sw., Bowdichia virgilioides Kunth, Hymenaea sp. L., Xylopia aromática (Lam.) Mart., Curatella americana L., Godmania aesculifolia (Kunth) Standl e Miconia sp. Ruiz & Pav.

The aim of this note is to report the parasitism of Aleurodicus pseudugesii Martin, 2008 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) nymphs by Aleuroctonus marki Hansson & LaSalle, 2003 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in coconut palm Cocos nucifera L. (Arecaceae) in Santa Izabel do Pará, a municipality in the Eastern Amazon. This is the first recorded instance of a parasitoid species in A. pseudugesii.

Implantable loop recorders (ILR) are relatively novel tools for the diagnosis and clinical management of patients with cryptogenic strokes, syncope and cardiac arrhythmias. The ILR implantation is considered a minimally invasive and low-risk procedure, however rare complications can occur, including device migration. We present the case of a 60-year-old woman who underwent implantation of the new generation ILR BioMonitor III (Biotronik) as part of recurrent syncope workup. The procedure was unremarkable, without acute complications, except for a sharp and persistent chest pain during and after. While at implantation we could activate the device from standard position, we were not able to connect to the device at control after 1 week despite normal functioning of remote monitoring. Chest X-ray and chest computed tomography at one week confirmed device migration into the left postero-inferior part of the pleural cavity. The device was retrieved during thoracoscopy without further complications.

The current study assessed the efficiency of hydrogel and mulch in survival, height and diameter growth of Guarea guidonia (L.) Sleumer seedlings as technique for forest restoration of degraded areas. Four treatments were assessed in open site presenting exposed and compacted soil. Control treatment: only planting seedlings. Treatment 1: planting seedlings in plots exposed to hydrogel. Treatment 2: planting seedlings and depositing mulch around them. Treatment 3: planting seedlings in plots exposed to hydrogel and mulch depositing around seedlings. Using hydrogel in planting seedlings, mulch deposition around seedlings, or the combination of both, increase the survival rate and favors greater diameter and height growth in G. guidonia seedlings, as well as enhances forest restoration through seedling planting in degraded sites located in regions subject to water shortage.

Inflammation, hypertension, and negative heart health outcomes including cardiovascular disease are closely linked but the mechanisms by which inflammation can cause high blood pressure are not yet fully elucidated. Cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes play a role in pain, inflammation, and hypertension development, and inhibition of these enzymes is currently of great interest to researchers and pharmaceutical companies. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the drug of choice in terms of COX inhibition but can have negative side effects for consumers. Functional food ingredients containing cyclooxygenase inhibitors offer a strategy to inhibit cyclooxygenases without negative side effects. Several COX inhibitors have been discovered, to date, from marine and other resources. We describe here, for the first time, the generation and characterization of a bioactive hydrolysate generated using Viscozyme® and Alcalase from the red microalga Porphyridium sp. The hydrolysate demonstrates in vitro COX-1 inhibitory activity and antihypertensive activity in vivo, assessed using spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Peptides were identified and sequenced using MS and assessed using an in silico computational approach for potential bioactivities. The peptides predicted to be bioactive, including GVDYVRFF, AIPAAPAAPAGPKLY, and LIHADPPGVGL were chemically synthesized and cyclooxygenase inhibition was confirmed. Peptides AIPAAPAAPAGPKLY and LIHADPPGVGL had COX-1 IC50 values of 0.2349 mg/mL (0.16 µM) and 0.2193 mg/mL (0.2 µM), respectively. The hydrolysate was included in a food carrier (jelly candies) and an antihypertensive effect was observed in SHRs.

Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are a diverse group of sap-sucking insect species that can cause severe damage in crops with global economic importance. Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are a crop with considerable value for the brewing and pharmaceutical industries worldwide. The aim of the current study is to register whitefly species associated with this plant in Brazil. Specimens were collected from H. lupulus leaves in four different counties in Rio de Janeiro state (Cachoeiras de Macacu, Cordeiro, Nova Friburgo and Seropédica). Whiteflies belonging to nine genera and distributed in two subfamilies (Aleurodicinae and Aleyrodinae) were identified. Nine hop varieties (i.e., Brazylinsk, Cascade, Chinook, Columbus, Hallertau, Nugget, Saaz, Spalt, and Victoria) are used as host plants by these insects in Brazil. Except for Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), the other identified species were recorded in hop crops for the first time.

Wound healing is a complex process of repair that involves the interaction between different cell types and involves coordinated interactions between intracellular and extracellular signaling. Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMSCs) based and acellular amniotic membrane (AM) therapeutic strategies with the potential for treatment and regeneration of tissue. We aimed to evaluate the involvement of paracrine effects in tissue repair after the flap skin lesion rat model. In the full-thickness flap skin experiment of forty Wistar rats: A total of 40 male Wistar rats were randomized into four groups: group I: control (C; n = 10), with full-thickness lesions on the back, without (BMSCs) or AM (n = 10); group II: injected (BMSCs; n = 10); group III: covered by AM; group IV–injected (AM + BMSCs; n = 10). Cytokine levels, IL-1, and IL-10 assay kits, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GRs) and carbonyl activity levels were measured by ELISA 28th day, and TGF-β was evaluated by immunohistochemical, the expression collagen expression was evaluated by Picrosirius staining. Our results showed that the IL-1 interleukin was higher in the control group, and the IL-10 presented a higher mean when compared to the control group. The groups with BMSCs and AM showed the lowest expression levels of TGF-β. SOD, GRs, and carbonyl activity analysis showed a predominance in groups that received treatment from 80%. The collagen fiber type I was predominant in all groups; however, the AM + BMSCs group obtained a higher average when compared to the control group. Our findings suggest that the AM+ BMSCs promote skin wound healing, probably owing to their paracrine effect attributed to the promotion of new collagen for tissue repair.

A presente pesquisa buscou analisar a vivência da espiritualidade no sistema carcerário a partir da teoria de Viktor Emil Frankl. Buscando entender como aspectos da espiritualidade poderia auxiliar no processo de ressocialização do sujeito encarcerado. A pesquisa foi realizada no Presidio de Ibirité – Minas Gerais. A primeiro momento foi realizado uma pesquisa bibliográfica dentro das obras de Frankl e de outros autores foram utilizados para estruturar os argumentos. As entrevistas foram feitas com método de pesquisa semiestruturado. Sem a utilização de gravador, apenas lápis e papel. Com egressos do sistema pôde ser utilizado o gravador de celular. Os resultados apontaram para uma ressignificação de sentido dos sujeitos em cárcere, contudo, ela não é suficiente por si só, requer um apoio das instituições sociais para se consolidar.

Cells are constantly subjected to cytotoxic and genotoxic insults resulting in the accumulation of unrepaired damaged DNA, which leads to neuronal death. In this way, DNA damage has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurological disorders, cancer, and aging. Lifestyle factors, such as physical exercise, are neuroprotective and increase brain function by improving cognition, learning, and memory, in addition to regulating the cellular redox milieu. Several mechanisms are associated with the effects of exercise in the brain, such as reduced production of oxidants, up-regulation of antioxidant capacity, and a consequent decrease in nuclear DNA damage. Furthermore, physical exercise is a potential strategy for further DNA damage repair. However, the neuroplasticity molecules that respond to different aspects of physical exercise remain unknown. In this review, we discuss the influence of exercise on DNA damage and adjacent mechanisms in the brain. We discuss the results of several studies that focus on the effects of physical exercise on brain DNA damage.

This article results from the research project «Violation of Rights and Social Vulnerability of Children, Adolescents and Families in the State of Paraíba and the Policies of Confrontation», involving 837 families, developed by the Group of Studies and Research on Children, Adolescents and Families (gepac/ufpb). It is a thematic clipping focused on the socioeconomic situation of 86 adolescents with infraction practices and who fulfilled socio-educational measures in an open environment or with deprivation of liberty, whose families are cared for in the 104 Specialized Reference Centers for Social Assistance (creas) in the State of Paraíba, located in the Brazilian Northeast region.

Background and Aims: We evaluated adipose tissue-derived hormones, body composition, serum metabolic profile, levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and the association of these parameters with the clinical outcome in patients with COVID-19. We sought to examine whether obesity, sex, and age influence the adipose tissue endocrine response to the disease.Methods: This prospective study investigated 145 hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Patients were categorized based on their body mass index (BMI), sex and age, and were also classified regarding their outcome after hospitalization as: (a) Non-ICU: patients hospitalized who did not receive intensive care; (b) ICU-survivor: patients admitted to the intensive care unit and discharged; (c) ICU-death: patients who died. Blood samples were collected by the hospital staff between the first and third day of hospitalization. Serum leptin, adiponectin and BDNF concentrations, triglycerides, total cholesterol and cholesterol fractions were performed following the manufacturer's guidelines.Results: We demonstrate that BDNF levels predict intensive care (IC) need (p < 0.01). This association was found to be stronger in patients >60y (p = 0.026). Neither leptin nor adiponectin concentration was associated with IC requirement or with patient's outcome, while the BDNF/adiponectin ratio was closely associated with worsened outcomes (p < 0.01). BDNF concentration was similar between sexes, however tended to be lower in male patients (p = 0.023). In older patients, BDNF concentration was lower than that of younger patients (p = 0.020). These age and sex-specific differences should be considered when employing these potential markers for prognosis assessment. While appetite and body composition regulating hormones secreted by the white adipose tissue are not reliable predictors of disease severity, the ratio BDNF/adiponectin was indicative of patient status.Conclusion: Thus, we propose that serum BDNF content and BDNF/adiponectin ratio may serve as tools predicting worsened prognosis in COVID-19, especially for male patients.

Abstract Obesity and type 2 diabetes are strongly associated with adipose tissue dysfunction and impaired adipogenesis. Understanding the molecular underpinnings that control adipogenesis is thus of fundamental importance for the development of novel therapeutics against metabolic disorders. However, translational approaches are hampered as current models do not accurately recapitulate adipogenesis. Here, a scaffold‐free versatile 3D adipocyte culture platform with chemically defined conditions is presented in which primary human preadipocytes accurately recapitulate adipogenesis. Following differentiation, multi‐omics profiling and functional tests demonstrate that 3D adipocyte cultures feature mature molecular and cellular phenotypes similar to freshly isolated mature adipocytes. Spheroids exhibit physiologically relevant gene expression signatures with 4704 differentially expressed genes compared to conventional 2D cultures (false discovery rate < 0.05), including the concerted expression of factors shaping the adipogenic niche. Furthermore, lipid profiles of >1000 lipid species closely resemble patterns of the corresponding isogenic mature adipocytes in vivo (R2 = 0.97). Integration of multi‐omics signatures with analyses of the activity profiles of 503 transcription factors using global promoter motif inference reveals a complex signaling network, involving YAP, Hedgehog, and TGFβ signaling, that links the organotypic microenvironment in 3D culture to the activation and reinforcement of PPARγ and CEBP activity resulting in improved adipogenesis.

A assistência ao parto passou por importantes transformações nos últimos séculos. Neste processo, o modelo tecnocrático tornou-se hegemônico, promovendo uma atitude passiva nas mulheres. Evidências mostram, entretanto, que em trabalho de parto a mulher é tomada por estados incomuns de consciência, conhecidos como partolândia, que a tornam ativamente apta ao efetivo trabalho de parto, e a uma experiência de vida positivamente marcante. Objetivou-se discutir como a emergência desses estados potencializa melhores desfechos de parto e promove o crescimento pessoal da mulher. Assim, realizou-se reflexão teórica baseada no modelo integral de Wilber, na teoria do território de nascimento de Fahy, levando em conta os modos contemporâneos de assistência ao parto (Davies-Floyd), e uma visão arquetípica de transformação feminina (Nogueira). A partolândia apresenta-se enquanto modificação na percepção de espaço e tempo, emocionalidade e intuição aguçadas, insights psíquicos, revivescência de traumas etc. Conhecer os estados de consciência da mulher no parto, e os meandros do território de nascimento no qual emergem, pode auxiliar na assistência à parturição, além de viabilizar transformações que impliquem em desenvolvimento psicológico para a mulher.

Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa voltada para o cultivo das emoções na educação, com o envolvimento de duas pesquisadoras, quatro professoras copesquisadoras e 139 estudantes do primeiro ano do ensino médio de uma escola estadual de referência da Região Metropolitana do Recife, Pernambuco. Adotamos uma abordagem qualitativa, exploratória e propositiva por meio de uma pesquisa-ação. As análises foram realizadas de forma interpretativa com o suporte do software Iramuteq. A intervenção indicou a importância de: manter uma escuta sensível quanto às vivências dos participantes; perceber os docentes como copesquisadores, entendendo que os fundamentos teóricos integrados à experiência prática deles geram conhecimento e que se devem respeitar as singularidades de cada docente. O desenvolvimento de habilidades como autoconhecimento e autogestão estimulou a compreensão mútua, promovendo a empatia entre os participantes (docentes-discentes e discentes entre si), e contribuiu para a regulação da impulsividade, proporcionando relações mais humanizadas no ambiente escolar em foco e na vida em sociedade.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine control measures for gastrointestinal nematodes in goats in the northeastern semiarid after analyzing the dynamics of gastrointestinal helminths during the drought, the evolution of the parasitic load after the first rains and the differences in susceptibility between goats of different categories and ages. Five farms were studied from March 2013 to January 2015. Feces were collected from all goats every month, for fecal egg counts (FECs). No treatment was required on any farm during the dry period. In 2013, with annual rainfall of 265-533 mm, treatments were not necessary during the rainy season. However, in 2014, with rainfall of 604-778 mm, treatments were necessary 60-90 days, after the first rains. On three farms, gastrointestinal nematodes showed multiple anthelmintic resistance. The FECs from lactating goats were significantly higher than from dry and young goats. In conclusion, in the Brazilian semi-arid region (Caatinga biome), it is generally unnecessary to treat grazing goats during the dry season. In the rainy season, the parasite load increases 2-3 months after the first rains. In both, the dry and the rainy season, farmers should monitor their herds by means of FEC or another criterion (anemia or submandibular edema), to determine the need to treat.

The burden of food insecurity is large in Sub-Saharan Africa, yet the evidence-base on the relation between household food insecurity and early child development is extremely limited. Furthermore, available research mostly relies on cross-sectional data, limiting the quality of existing evidence. We use longitudinal data on preschool-aged children and their households in Ghana to investigate how being in a food insecure household was associated with early child development outcomes across three years. Household food insecurity was measured over three years using the Household Hunger Score. Households were first classified as "ever food insecure" if they were food insecure at any round. We also assessed persistence of household food insecurity by classifying households into three categories: (i) never food insecure; (ii) transitory food insecurity, if the household was food insecure only in one wave; and (iii) persistent food insecurity, if the household was food insecure in two or all waves. Child development was assessed across literacy, numeracy, social-emotional, short-term memory, and self-regulation domains. Controlling for baseline values of each respective outcome and child and household characteristics, children from ever food insecure households had lower literacy, numeracy and short-term memory. When we distinguished between transitory and persistent food insecurity, transitory spells of food insecurity predicted decreased numeracy (β = -0.176, 95% CI: -0.317; -0.035), short-term memory (β = -0.237, 95% CI: -0.382; -0.092), and self-regulation (β = -0.154, 95% CI: -0.326; 0.017) compared with children from never food insecure households. By contrast, children residing in persistently food insecure households had lower literacy scores (β = -0.243, 95% CI: -0.496; 0.009). No gender differences were detected. Results were broadly robust to the inclusion of additional controls. This novel evidence from a Sub-Saharan African country highlights the need for multi-sectoral approaches including social protection and nutrition to support early child development.

The aquatic exercise is an effective non-pharmacological therapy for prevention and control of hypertension. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of aquatic exercise on mental health, functional autonomy, and oxidative dysfunction in hypertensive adults. Methodologically 29 adults (mean age 53 ± 7.5 years) were included in the study, and were randomly grouped as hypertensive (n = 16) and non-hypertensive (n = 13). Both groups underwent low-intensity aquatic exercise program for 12 weeks. Outcomes were evaluated at week 0 and 12. The values for the following parameters decreased in the hypertensive group post training: anxiety (−6.2 ± 2 score; 60%), Timed Up and Go test (−7.4 ± 0.3 sec; 30%), protein carbonylation (−0.15 ± 0.03 nmol/mg protein; 50%), nitric oxide (12.4 ± 6 nmol/mg protein; 62%), interleukin-6 (−27.6 ± 5.7 pg/mg protein; 46%), and tissue necrosis factor-alpha (−52.4 ± 3.8 pg/mg protein; 40%); however, the values of the following parameters increased before training: Berg score (56 ± 2; 7.8%), flexibility (27 ± 1 cm; 71%); glutathione (3.1 ± 1.3 nmol/mg protein; 138%), and superoxide dismutase (1.6 ± 0.4 nmol/mg; 166%). In conclusion, we suggest that low-intensity aquatic exercise program improved anxiety, functional autonomy, and oxidative dysfunction in hypertensive adults.

ABSTRACT The current study aims to characterize the soil seed banks in a forest under restoration and in a seasonal semideciduous forest remnant, as well as to quantitatively and qualitatively compare them in order to evaluate the seed bank potential to influence the restoration process. In total, 60 samples of soil seed banks were collected in two adjacent forests (30 in a 2.18-ha forest undergoing restoration process based on the planting of seedlings belonging to different tree species, after the forest was subjected to bauxite mining activity; and 30 in a 5.30-ha preserved forest fragment). The soil seed bank of the forest undergoing restoration recorded higher density of emerged seedlings than that of the reference ecosystem. Although the shrub-tree species in the investigated forests lacked floristic similarity, the highly similar dispersal syndrome distribution and the successional category of shrub-tree species in them have indicated that both forests underwent ecological processes. Therefore, the restoration process implemented in the mined area has successfully recovered the soil seed bank after a few years.

The point-counts method was used to evaluate the bird community in a small patch of forest (1 ha) restored through reforestation, with more than 40 years of deployment, in Viçosa, MG state. In total, 20 points were sampled in the reproductive period of the birds, during 2011. A total of 31 bird species and 160 contacts were recorded, and all species were identified as typical from a semi-deciduous forest and included five endemic species of the Atlantic forest biome. In the present study, the presence of frugivorous and insectivorous birds in the understory with little tolerance for open environments and strong insolation, suggests the good quality of the sampled habitat, confirming that the restored forest is in an advanced stage of succession. The results of this study also demonstrate that even in a small area, and with a few days of sampling, it is possible to obtain a rapid characterization of the bird community, being possible to associate it to the habitat conditions and allowing a safe evaluation of the success of a forest restoration project.

Nearly all cellular functions depend on redox reactions, including those of immune cells. However, how redox reactions are rearranged to induce an immune response to the entry of pathogens into the host is a complex process. Understanding this scenario will facilitate identification of the roles of specific types of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the immune system. Although the detrimental effect of ROS could support the innate immune system, the adaptive immune system also requires a low level of ROS in order to stimulate various molecular functions. The requirements and functions of ROS vary in different cells, including immune cells. Thus, it is difficult to understand the specific ROS types and their targeting functions. Incomplete transfer of electrons to a specific target, along with failure of the antioxidant response, could result in oxidative-damage-related diseases, and oxidative damage is a common phenomenon in most immune disorders. Exercise is a noninvasive means of regulating ROS levels and antioxidant responses. Several studies have shown that exercise alone boosts immune functions independent of redox reactions. Here, we summarize how ROS target various signaling pathways of the immune system and its functions, along with the possible role of exercise in interfering with immune system signaling.

Myocardial infarction (MI) remains the leading cause of cardiovascular death worldwide and a major cause of heart failure. Recent studies have suggested that cell-based therapies with bone marrow stem cells (BMSC) and human amniotic membrane (hAM) would recover the ventricular function after MI; however, the mechanisms underlying these effects are still controversial. Herein, we aimed to compare the effects of BMSC and hAM in a rat model of heart failure. MI was induced through coronary occlusion, and animals with an ejection fraction (EF) < 50% were included and randomized into three groups: control, BMSC, and hAM. The BMSC and hAM groups were implanted on the anterior ventricular wall seven days after MI, and a new echocardiographic analysis was performed on the 30th day, followed by euthanasia. The echocardiographic results after 30 days showed significant improvements on EF and left-ventricular end-sistolic and end-diastolic volumes in both BMSC and hAM groups, without significant benefits in the control group. New blood vessels, desmine-positive cells and connexin-43 expression were also elevated in both BMSC and hAM groups. These results suggest a recovery of global cardiac function with the therapeutic use of both BMSC and hAM, associated with angiogenesis and cardiomyocyte regeneration after 30 days.

Hepatic in vitro models that accurately replicate phenotypes and functionality of the human liver are needed for applications in toxicology, pharmacology and biomedicine. Notably, it has become clear that liver function can only be sustained in 3D culture systems at physiologically relevant cell densities. Additionally, drug metabolism and drug-induced cellular toxicity often follow distinct spatial micropatterns of the metabolic zones in the liver acinus, calling for models that capture this zonation. We demonstrate the manufacture of accurate liver microphysiological systems (MPS) via engineering of 3D stereolithography printed hydrogel chips with arrays of diffusion open synthetic vasculature channels at spacings approaching in vivo capillary distances. Chip designs are compatible with seeding of cell suspensions or preformed liver cell spheroids. Importantly, primary human hepatocytes (PHH) and hiPSC-derived hepatocyte-like cells remain viable, exhibit improved molecular phenotypes compared to isogenic monolayer and static spheroid cultures and form interconnected tissue structures over the course of multiple weeks in perfused culture. 3D optical oxygen mapping of embedded sensor beads shows that the liver MPS recapitulates oxygen gradients found in the acini, which translates into zone-specific acet-ami-no-phen toxicity patterns. Zonation, here naturally generated by high cell densities and associated oxygen and nutrient utilization along the flow path, is also documented by spatial proteomics showing increased concentration of periportal- versus perivenous-associated proteins at the inlet region and vice versa at the outlet region. The presented microperfused liver MPS provides a promising platform for the mesoscale culture of human liver cells at phenotypically relevant densities and oxygen exposures. A full 3D tissue culture platform is presented, enabled by massively parallel arrays of high-resolution 3D printed microperfusion hydrogel channels that functionally mimics tissue vasculature. The platform supports long-term culture of liver models with dimensions of several millimeters at physiologically relevant cell densities, which is difficult to achieve with other methods. Human liver models are generated from seeded primary human hepatocytes (PHHs) cultured for two weeks, and from seeded spheroids of hiPSC-derived human liver-like cells cultured for two months. Both model types show improved functionality over state-of-the-art 3D spheroid suspensions cultured in parallel. The platform can generate physiologically relevant oxygen gradients driven by consumption rather than supply, which was validated by visualization of embedded oxygen-sensitive microbeads, which is exploited to demonstrate zonation-specific toxicity in PHH liver models.
